Saint Nicholas The Saint who became Santa Claus by Victor Parachin n n n

SAINT NICHOLAS is the patron saint of children, bankers, pawnbrokers, sailors, perfumers, brides, unmarried women, travelers, fishermen, dockworkers, brewers, poets and prisoners. In addition, he is the patron saint of Russia, Greece and Sicily. In England, more churches are named after him than any other individual. While many people recognize his name, most people do not know that St. Nicholas is the man who came to be known as Santa Claus…it all began early in the fourth century. Nicholas was born to wealthy parents in the ancient southeastern Turkish town of Patara in the district of Lycia. As a very young child, he was drawn to spirituality and adopted a self-imposed, twice weekly fast on Wednesdays and Fridays. When he was 13, a plague struck Patara which took the lives of his mother and father. Nicholas was sent to live with his uncle who was the Bishop of Patara. As heir to his parents’ considerable fortune, Nicholas resolved to use his wealth helping others. There are many accounts of him giving away food, clothing and money to the needy. These acts of compassion were done as anonymously as possible, in keeping with this teaching of Jesus: “Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them…but when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your giving may be in secret.” (Matthew 6:1 & 3, New International Version.)

DECEMBER 2023

The most popular story of Nicholas’ generosity concerns his aid in saving a young woman from slavery. Her widowed father, who had been a nobleman, had fallen from riches to poverty. He had three daughters and even though the daughters had many suitors, they could not marry because he could not provide them with a dowry of money or property, which a bride was expected to bring into a marriage relationship. In order to save her sisters, the eldest daughter decided: “I will sell myself as a slave and thereby raise the money for my two sister’s dowries!” Word of the woman’s intent spread through the community. While many knew what she was about to do, only Nicholas acted on her behalf. Secretly and under cover of night darkness, he tossed a bag of gold through an open window of the eldest daughter’s room. Realizing that the bag of gold was only enough money for the marriage of one of the three daughters, Nicholas returned secretly the next night and tossed a second bag of gold through the window. When he returned to the house for a third time with yet another bag of gold, he found all the windows secured so he climbed up on the roof and dropped the bag down the chimney. The bag of gold landed in one of the girl’s shoes, which were beside the hearth. When the girls were able to marry, people expressed surprise that the family could come up with the money. However, the girls simply explained

that they were the benefactors of an anonymous donor. This, of course, raised curiosity in the community and before long, people discovered that it was Nicholas who had provided the family with the money. Because of those kind acts, Nicholas eventually became the patron of unmarried women. Later artistic depictions of Nicholas show the saint holding three gold balls or bags, which represent the original three bags of gold. Under his uncle’s guidance, Nicholas continued to cultivate his interest in spiritual matters. He often helped his uncle at baptisms, weddings and funerals as well as visiting the sick and bringing them food and medicine. Nicholas studied for the priesthood

and was ordained when he was only 19 years of age. One of his great desires was to visit the land of Jesus’ birth and ministry so he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem where he retraced the steps of Jesus. On the way home, the ship he traveled on was caught in a vicious storm. In the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, the skies exploded. There was thunder, lightning and enormous waves which tossed the ship like a mere cork on the water. The winds shredded the sails and the waves caused the main mast to snap. The ship began to take on water drifting aimlessly, at the complete mercy of nature. At that point, even the seasoned sailors on board were terrified. Completely helpless, they began to pray for help and mercy. When Nicholas saw the sailors at prayer, he joined them, remaining with them in prayer for two days and two nights. Early on the third morning, the storm passed, the sun came out and, miraculously, the ship remained afloat. Examining their surroundings, the sailors were surprised to find themselves near the harbor at Myra, a city in the same area where Nicholas had grown up. Upon landing in the port, the sailors explained how they had barely survived and said their safety was the direct result of prayers offered by Nicholas. Because of that incident, Nicholas would become the patron of sailors. As it turned out, the bishop of Myra had recently died and the priests could not agree on a new bishop. After praying and discussing the matter, they decided that the first worshipper who came for morning prayers would be selected their new bishop. That day, Nicholas walked three miles to the cathedral because he wanted to thank God for delivering the ship from the storm. When they learned his story and that he was a man of prayer, the priests elected him their bishop. Nicholas protested their choice saying he was not worthy, but they insisted and soon he was wearing the bishop’s miter on his head, holding the bishop’s staff in his hand and sitting in the bishop’s chair. As bishop, Nicholas continued to work on behalf of the poor and the suffering. “The office of bishop demands a different sort of conduct, so that one may live no longer for oneself but for others,” he said. While he was Bishop of Myra, a prolonged drought afflicted the area resulting in a great shortage of food. Famine spread. As Nicholas organized relief efforts, several ships anchored in the port. Those vessels carried grain from Egypt to Constantinople. Nicholas approached Continued on page 22 E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

Crownovers Restore The Brisbane House IN THE RIVER VALLEY AND WELCOME OVERNIGHT GUESTS

n n n

THE BRISBANE HOUSE, an important historic home in Arena, WI, has recently undergone an extensive and twice commended restoration. Wisconsin River Valley residents know the stone house as “the house that splits lightning,” on 18 wooded acres. William Henry Brisbane, a man we’d call a human rights activist today, built the house and surrounding buildings in 1868. Because there’s no other house like it in Wisconsin, it is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. In fact, the State Historical Society just presented the Brisbane House with the 2023 Board of Curators Restoration Award. Because of Brisbane’s legacy and the home’s singular form—impossibly tall and skinny, carved out of the stone from the nearby bluff—it’s a place worth highlighting. Samantha (originally from Milwaukee’s North Shore) and Bruce Crownover (from Los Angeles) and a business partner (in Madison) purchased it in April 2021 after Samantha had her eye on it for nearly 30 years. It was her vision to stabilize, restore, and rejuvenate this three-story gem. With over 30 years’ experience, she created a team of expert advisors, enthusiastic local crafts people, and volunteers, over 150 in all. Samantha led the full restoration of the main house in four and a half months, and

DECEMBER 2023

the adjacent summer kitchen in another two and a half. She received State tax credit for the restoration, which adhered to National Park Service standards. Brisbane came from Beaufort County, South Carolina, where his family had enslaved 33 people on rice and cotton plantations. He came to believe slavery was wrong and was forced to move north in 1835. A man of many professions, including minister, doctor, pharmacist, and State legislature clerk, he was most noted for his ardent abolitionism. He eventually manumitted and helped to establish the people his family had enslaved. As a tribute to Brisbane’s work, Samantha created a library of anti-racist literature and books by Black authors. She and Bruce (an artist and master printmaker formerly with Tandem Press) showcase contemporary art created exclusively by internationallyknown artists of color. The Crownovers hope guests will depart inspired by Brisbane’s courage. Samantha adds, “In the spirit of Brisbane, we want Brisbane House to be a place of peace, inclusion, creativity, and joy. We celebrate those who speak out against injustice. We are honored to be the next stewards of this important legacy.” It is now open for overnight guest stays. Continued from page 10 the ships’ captains asking them to set aside a portion of their grain for the hungry of Myra. Initially, the captains refused explaining they would be held responsible for any shortages. However, Nicholas assured them no harm would come to them as a result of their generosity in feeding the starving citizens of Myra. Persuaded by this kind and compassionate man, the captains set aside 100 bushels of grain from each ship. It was enough to save many lives and buy time until local crops could grow and be harvested again. When the ships reached Constantinople, the cargo was weighed and was exactly what it had been when the ships departed from Egypt. Thus, another miracle was attached to the life of Nicholas. During the time Nicholas was bishop at Myra, the Roman emperor, Diocletian, demanded that all those living within the Roman Empire worship him as a god. Like many Christians, Nicholas refused to obey that order. “Churches may fall,” declared Nicholas, “but Christians must stand.” For his unbending position, Nicholas was tossed into prison where he was humiliated and tortured. His imprisonment lasted 10 long years and ended only when Rome crowned a new ruler, a man named Constantine who converted to Christianity and freed all Christians from prison. Nicholas spent the rest of his life as Bishop of Myra always continuing to keep an eye out for the needs of the poor and the oppressed. On one occasion, three men in Myra were wrongfully accused of a crime and sentenced to death by the governor who had been bribed. Nicholas learned of the incident. Even though he had been harshly persecuted by Roman authorities, Nicholas immediately confronted the governor. Evidently Nicholas’ confrontation was so intense and truthful that the governor promptly admitted his guilt and the innocence of the three men. The three were released. For his courage and intervention on their behalf, Nicholas came to be regarded as the patron saint of prisoners. After a lifetime of service, Nicholas died peacefully in Myra on December 6, 343. By the time of his death, he had become a legendary figure. In the centuries following his death, many attempts were made to carry off his remains with the reasoning that the relics of St. Nicholas would be a great asset to any city which could publicize its possession. This happened in the 11th century when Constantinople and Nicholas’ city of Myra were under Islamic control. E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

On May 9, 1087 Italian Christian traders were able to carry off the remains placing them in Bari, Italy. A magnificent shrine was built around Nicholas’ remains with Pope Urban II present at the enshrining. After that, devotion to St. Nicholas increased all over Europe. Two aspects of his life led to his becoming known as Santa Claus: his unbridled generosity and his love of children. In the years after his death, parents would give their children special gifts of fruit, nuts, hard candies and clay figures, usually to coincide with his death day, December 3rd. When the children would rise in the morning and see the gifts displayed, parents would simply say that St. Nicholas left them. With the passing of years, gifts from St. Nicholas became common every December throughout all of Europe. When Dutch colonists came to the new world, they brought the traditions of St. Nicholas with them. The Dutch referred to St. Nicholas as “Sinter Claus.” When they lost control of New Amsterdam to the British in the 17th century, “Sinter Claus” was Anglicized to Santa Claus. Thus, the man who became Santa Claus was originally an orphaned boy who became a priest giving away all of his wealth to those in need, especially children. n

WHAT DOES CHRISTMAS MEAN TO YOU? Christmas is not any of the things with which it is usually associated. It is not Christmas cards, some pretty, some comic, some formal with only the engraved name of the sender, some including a detailed account of the family accomplishments during the 11 months preceding, some religious. Christmas is not presents, nor is it the sudden fear that we have forgotten to send a present to someone who should definitely not be forgotten. It is not eggnog parties supposedly toasting the spirit of the day. As a matter of fact, Christmas is not the conviviality so often predicated as the Spirit of the Christmas season. Christmas is not indulging oneself in Christmas cookies, candies, stollen, et al. It is not a season for reckless eating and drinking; nor is it proclaiming, “Merry Christmas” to one and all as one proclaims “Have a nice day” regardless of storms or blizzards. Christmas is not a plastic tree gaudily decorated nor is it a sturdy balsam ablaze with lights. Christmas is a private acknowledgement of a very special occasion whose significance lies in the consciousness of the individual. It may be based on legend or fantasy. It may be based on a stirring sense of a spiritual presence and power that defies explanation and yet is possessed of a depth of joyous peace.

by Ger trude M. Puelicher

This blessed cause for celebration is love as fine as steel and fragile as crystal. Love must hold firm like steel; it cannot be shattered like crystal. Love is the essence of selflessness, the epitome of givingness. What would happen if each of us who celebrates Christmas would spend just 15 minutes on Christmas Day sending love into the world, to everyone—stranger, family, enemy, friend, neighbor, business associates, relative? What would happen if children learning to say words were taught not only “I love Mommy,” “I love Daddy,” but “I love everybody?” With love, of course, must go faith. Christmas is faith. Faith in what? If scientists are working to develop synthetic life, where then is God, the Creator of the Life Force that is individualized as you and as me? With what are we tampering when mortal man believes it lies in his power to create life? If faith is, according to Hebrews XI “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” then should we not recognize without any question that God and the life that God has individualized as you and I are one? Yes, Christmas is many things to many people. However, must it not be a conscious realization of the Christ Spirit that dwells within each of us and that will govern our days with peace and love for all mankind according to our acceptance of its presence and power? n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S
