Celebrity Obsession Turned Parasocial Relaonship BY KAITLYN LEE

BY KAITLYN LEE

T

PUBLICITY/PHOTOGRAPHY DIRECTOR

hink back to a time when you have heard celebrity news and felt anger, shock or happiness. Well, there is actually a term for being hung up on celebrities and their lives, and it is called having a parasocial relationship: an illusion of closeness to your favourite internet personality. This idea was introduced around 1950 and has been studied through movie stars, big -name sports stars, and fictional characters. Celebrities’ presence on the internet encourages illusions to surface, as the authenticity of celebrities can confuse fans. Celebrities tend to post in a way that makes them perceived in a specific way, or some may post as themselves. Many of them will share their thoughts and opinions, as well as private details of their life. This typically comes off as casual, similar to the manner in which a friend would send you a video. The way celebrities interact with fans through likes and retweets can make you feel as though you have a personal interaction with them. Celebrities revealing information about themselves may make fans react in ex-

treme ways. Some can b comeo obsessive and follow their favourite celebrity by watching and reading content from them. Fans can even feel that a celebrity posting on their platform is a form of a favour, which falls into the same field as things we look for in a real-life, personal relationship. The issue is that these celebrity-fan interactions go only one way. Celebrities interact with fans on a surface level and give them minimal attention by liking their posts or comments. This is due to having a large fanbase, but the oneway interaction means there is no relationship, even though the fan feels personally close to the celebrity. Fans have true feelings toward the relationship, even though the relationship is not real. They develop feelings of attachment and affection towards the celebrity, and the illusion of the relationship can be broken when a celebrity does something to upset the fan. They can feel real feelings of loss, anger and betrayal. When news broke out of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s divorce, the internet went ballistic and the media grew into a frenzy. People became obsessed with following Kanye’s

every move on social media and posted their reactions to his posts. Fans were shocked, going through a wide range of emotions, not realizing that they had developed a parasocial relationship. However, these one-sided relationships can also put people at ease, particularly those who are still young and figuring themselves out. People with low selfesteem may benefit from these, too, by creating a ‘new reality’ and thus seeing themselves in a more positive light. Parasocial relationships are quite common because you cannot get rejected by a celebrity you are seeing on a screen. When we become invested in celebrities, we even project ourselves onto them; we might aspire to be them, or have dreams and expectations similar to them.

Although it is more common for women to have these parasocial relationships, men can have them too. It has been found that men have these relationships with superheroes. Having a parasocial relationship could actually boost a man’s body image and perception of himself, while others, who do not have that relationship, might feel insecure and inferior. Parasocial relationships are so normalized that people do not even recognize them, and they often do not realize it is an actual thing. As internet users, we need to be more aware of the ways social media can affect us and be able to distinguish the real world apart from the digital world. Some effects can be a development of attachment and affection towards the celebrity, and

the illusion of a parasocial relationship can be broken when a celebrity does something to upset the fan. They can have real feelings of loss, anger and betrayal. Especially since the pandemic, everyone has been locked up and lonely. These parasocial relationships became much more common as people latch onto their favourite celebrities in order to get them through tough times.

A Tribute to Hadyn: 290 Years of Classical Excellence BY EKATERINA GRIGORIAN DEPUTY EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

H

istorians often refer to the late 18th century as the Age of Enlightenment. This was an era distinguished by the pursuit of understanding and logical thinking. These standards of proportion, symmetry, and balance from the cultures of ancient Rome and Greece were strongly reflected in music through the emphasis on excellence, enduring value, and timeless quality. Having rediscovered these principles of GrecoRoman art, artists and architects began to move away from the elaborate style of the Baroque era (ca 1600 - ca 1750) and established a new age known as the Classical era (ca 1750 - ca 1825). During the Baroque era, Italy was largely the centre of musical activity. However, Vienna established itself in the Classical era. Funnily enough, neither Mozart, Beethoven, nor Haydn, the founders of the Viennese school, originated from this vibrant city, but all were drawn to it due to its plentiful patronage and culture. Although referred to as a ‘Viennese school,’ this was no academic institution. Instead, it was meant to describe the musical style forged by Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. They did encounter one another but never formed a deliberate centre of learning. Franz Joseph Haydn, being the eldest, is often regarded as the father of the Classical style as he was a crucial face in the development of the string quartet, symphony, and sonata. His music integrates a diverse set of features, including folk music, humour, and powerful energy. Nearing the end of his life, both Mozart and Beethoven paid him tribute, recognizing his musical contributions and their obligation to this classical master. Franz Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in Rohrau, Austria. His father was a wheelwright and his mother was a cook. Although neither had any form of musical education, many noted that their family would often sing and

enjoy this form of art. It is no surprise that Haydn’s brothers, Michael and Johann, also became musicians. Haydn’s musical talents were recognized from an early age, but his parents were well aware that in Rohrau he had no chance of expanding this gift. So, around 1738, at the tender age of six, he was recruited to be a choirboy at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. There he received a musical education, although he was also largely self-taught. By 1749, Haydn struggled to sing higher choral parts as a result of puberty. Empress Maria Theresa herself complained about his singing abilities; thus, after pulling an unfortunate prank on one of his classmates, he was quickly dismissed from St. Stephen’s. Haydn was lucky enough to be taken in by Johann Michael Spangler, who provided him with a roof over his head. This was a difficult period for the young musician, as he struggled to earn a living by composing, performing, teaching, and accompanying. His musical capabilities were, however, gradually gaining the attention of potential patrons. In 1759, Haydn began his first full-time position as Kapellmeister (music director) to Count Ferdinand von Morzin, an aristocrat of the Holy Roman Empire. Haydn’s duties included conduct-

ing, composing, and performing. The first few of his many famous symphonies were written under the patronage of the Count. Just two short years later, Haydn began employment in Eisenstadt, Austria with the incredibly wealthy and influential Estarházy family as assistant Kapellmeister. Five years later, he received recognition and moved into the magnificent palace as Kapellmeister. The large estate was second only to Versailles, a shocking sight for a man of humble beginnings. His contract included many responsibilities and musical expectations, such as training instrumentalists, conducting, composing, and performing chamber music (music for small ensembles). He also supplied all music for the court opera house, theatre, and chapel. Despite some restrictions, Haydn had the ability to discover his creative freedom and artistic voice. He did so by exploring the leading genres of his time: symphony, opera, and string quartet. Since Prince Nikolai of Esterházy was a musical connoisseur and appreciated Haydn’s work, he provided him with daily access to his own small orchestra. Much of Haydn’s musical output followed the preferences of Prince Nikolai, too. The prince had a habit of picking up musical

hobbies for which Haydn was expected to compose. The prince acquired and began learning to play the baryton, a rare musical instrument, around 1765. Haydn was commissioned to write music for the prince to play, and over the next ten years, he composed almost 200 compositions for this instrument in various groupings, the most famous of which are the 126 baryton trios. Around 1775, the prince gave up the baryton and began a new hobby: opera productions. This became the focal point of musical life at court, and the opera theatre the prince had built at Esterháza became the home of a major season with multiple productions each year. Haydn acted as the company's director, recruiting and teaching singers as well as planning and conducting performances. He composed several of the operas that were performed, as well as substitution arias for other composers' operas. Haydn largely benefited from this patronage system. Being contracted to the Esterházy family for nearly thirty years, he was offered the financial security to experiment with approaches to formal structure and instrumental writing. Although the Esterházy estate was a relatively remote location, word of Haydn’s impressive compositions got around. Haydn got the opportunity to publish many works and receive commissions from other sources as well. He even developed a friendship with Mozart, and despite their age difference, they respected and admired each other, dedicating string quartets to one another. Despite his flourishing career, Haydn missed the liveliness of Vienna. Finally, after years of being away from this cultural centre, he had an opportunity to move back. In 1790, Prince Anton succeeded Prince Nikolai. Anton was not a huge music lover, so he continued to pay Haydn a pension but relieved him of all duties excluding composing an annual mass. Now that Franz Joseph Haydn could travel, he accepted an offer from Johann Peter Salomon, a German violinist and entrepreneur, who proposed that the composer should visit England

and lead new symphonies with a huge orchestra. In London, he composed and conducted the first six of his “London” symphonies and according to contemporary accounts, he “electrified” the audience. Haydn himself reflected: “As director of the orchestra, I could make experiments… add, delete, take risks. I was cut off from the world, no one could cause me to doubt myself or pester me, so I had to become an original.” Nearing the end of his stay in London, Haydn received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University. Despite the fact that it was written in 1789, the symphony performed for the occasion, no. 92, has become known as the Oxford Symphony. Haydn had already met a young Beethoven in 1790, but in 1792 he got the chance to mentor him briefly. Haydn had been a famous presence on the London concert scene by the time he came on his second trip to England (1794–1795). To no surprise, his last six symphonies were critically and financially successful. In 1795, Haydn permanently moved back to his favourite city of Vienna. In his later years, he wrote oratorios, six masses for Prince Nicholas II (Anton's successor), and even more string quartets. At the age of seventy, Haydn officially retired due to his failing health. He made his last public appearance in 1808 at the performance of his oratorio The Creation. On May 31, 1809, the Classical father, Franz Joseph Haydn, passed away. Mozart's requiem was performed at his memorial service. Franz Joseph Haydn came from humble beginnings but grew to become a leading musician of his time who, to this day, is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. Despite his increasing popularity and fame during his lifetime, he remained modest and kind. Fondly remembered by the musicians of the Esterházy court, he sets a good example for all: "Young people can learn from my example that something can come from nothing. What I have become is the result of my hard efforts."

(Image credits: Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures) Best Movie: Spiderman: No Way Home

Despite a notable fight with Squid Game to earn its spot as number one, Demon Slayer prevailed in the “Best Show” category. It follows a young boy in 20thcentury Japan in a search for the man who murdered his family and cursed his sister. After the arrival of the Mugen Train movie last year, the show has definitely gathered anticipation for the Entertainment District arc. With loads of gore and notable animation, Demon Slayer’s second season manages to live up to the hype. Plus, after all those weekly cliffhangers, it’s no wonder this show left a strong impression on its audience.

Spiderman: No Way Home won “Best Movie” by a whopping 71.4% of votes! MCU fans can recall the strict ‘NO SPOILER’ posts all over social media during the first few weeks of the release. Since it entered theatres in December, No Way Home has become the sixth-highest grossing (Image credits: Chris Pizmovie, earning $1.8 bil- zello, Chris Pizello/ lion1. Karen M. McManus’ debut novel, One Of Us Is Lying, is a young adult mystery novel beloved by many. Despite being released in 2017, this novel has seen mass success and popularity this past year. The plot follows four high school students who become suspects in a case following a fellow classmate’s sudden death. With that, we reach the end of our survey results.
