Well, we certainly know who didn’t steal it: Ralphie’s mom Someone stole the leg lamp belonging to Ralphie’s “Old Man” last week from a North Tonawanda, N.Y., store’s tribute to “A Christmas Story.” The owner of the liquor store says his window display honoring the holiday classic includes memorabilia from the 1983 film, including several versions of the leg lamp. The springing of Silver Spring SILVER SPRING The tables are from Etsy. The music comes in only one form: vinyl. The whole-bean, singleorigin coffee is local, of course. Bump ’n Grind, a chic coffee-shop-meets-record-store, wouldn’t raise an eyebrow on 14th Street or in a tucked-away alley in Shaw. But here it is, a bright and modern little hangout on a desolate stretch in Silver Spring. To the north, there’s makeup emporium Ulta and the Fillmore music venue. Scattered among them are excellent ethnic restaurants, the kind of places that cut their lights at 9 p.m. But there’s not much else because, well … “How much time do you have?” said Mike Diegel, chairman of the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District Advisory Committee. He sat on a task force

There’s hope that a new coffee shop and vinyl-only record store on East-West Highway could be a harbinger of a cooler, hipper Silver Spring.

last year that addressed Montgomery County’s big first-world dilemma: It’s not cool. Not in the way exuded by Petworth, or Shaw, or even Clarendon, which is where are all the Montgomery County natives seem to be fleeing to. In fact, a decade after the county wooed the AFI Silver to the neighborhood, installed some parking garages and declared Silver Spring “sprung,” it’s clear things haven’t been quite so pat.

This summer, Julie Verratti and a handful of others opened Denizens Brewing Co., a brewpub that lobbied successfully to see the laws changed so that it could compete as a brewery and bar. The task force just happened to be doing some serious handwringing about why the coveted 21-to34 set was moving elsewhere. Standing in the way, Diegel said, was that bars were required to close earlier and getting a license

to open a bar was next to impossible. But that’s changing, opening the door, perhaps, for more Denizens, and more Bump ’n Grinds. From a business perspective, it makes sense to head north. In D.C., rents are higher and there is much competition. But in Silver Spring, there’s more than enough love to go around for places like Jackie’s, with its housemade doughnuts, and more recently Urban Butcher (temporarily closed for repairs). In the past year, the Dupont Circle bistro Scion opened a location to dish out Hong Kong-style buns. “It has been a struggle to fill in some of the retail since the economy tanked,” said Reemberto Rodriguez, who was appointed by the county executive to lead Silver Spring. But he sees hope on this stretch. “They can’t help but succeed,” Rodriguez said. “My God, they’re surrounded by around 5,000 people in those high-rises.” LAVANYA RAMANATHAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

College Park, a startup hub? U-Md. hires Ken Ulman to attract businesses and entrepreneurs COLLEGE PARK, MD. The University of Maryland has recruited Ken Ulman, the former Howard County, Md., executive who ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor on the Democratic ticket last month, to transform College Park into a Silicon Valley-like hub filled with incubators and startups. Son hasn’t tied the knot? Blame porn. There could be an unlikely contributor to the decline in marriages: free pornography on the Internet. A team of researchers, who published their findings in The Institute for the Study of Labor in Germany, determined that the rise of free pornography is not only correlated with a decline in percentage of young adult males who are married, but might be contributing to the trend. The reason, one of the study’s authors explains, is likely tied to the relationship between marriage and sexual gratification. If pornography is viewed as a means of sexual gratification, then it could be undercutting the need for marriages to serve this function. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Embattled NYC mayor calls for halt to protests NEW YORK An emotional New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio paid tribute Monday to the families of the two New York City police officers killed in an executionstyle slaying, calling for a halt to police-related demonstrations until the officers are laid to rest. In a speech at the Police Athletic League in Manhattan, the mayor appeared to fight back tears at times. He declined to address the swirling controversy over whether his efforts to reform the police department contributed to Saturday’s shooting deaths of officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos in Brooklyn. Instead, de Blasio called for unity and urged the residents

of the tension-ridden city to “put aside political debates and protests” and to focus on supporting the officers’ families. “That should be our only concern, how we support them,’’ said de Blasio, who condemned the shootings as “an attack on all of us, an attack on our democracy, an attack on our values, an attack on every single New Yorker.’’ Relations between the mayor and officers have become so strained, former New York City police commissioner Ray Kelly said in an interview, that de Blasio “probably needs an intermediary to go between himself and the [police] unions, maybe a religious leader.” Other New York elected

officials have defended the mayor, saying he supports the department and is only trying to reform certain police practices that have raised concerns in minority communities. De Blasio campaigned for mayor in part on reforming police tactics that he said had unfairly targeted minorities. “I think the tone that the mayor is trying to set is a tone that brings people together,” Rep. Gregory W. Meeks, D-N.Y., said on ABC’s “This Week.” “We stand with the police department. Argentinian court rules orangutan should be free

Australian family rescued after 10 days stranded

Pope Francis issued a critique Monday of the Vatican bureaucracy that serves him, denouncing how some people lust for power at all costs, live double lives and suffer from “spiritual Alzheimer’s” that has made them forget they’re supposed to be joyful men of God. Francis’ Christmas greeting to the cardinals, bishops and priests who make up the Curia, which runs the Holy See, was no exchange of holiday good wishes. Rather, it was a catalog of 15 sins of the Curia — including that “terrorism of gossip” can “kill the reputation of our colleagues and brothers in cold blood” — that Francis said he hoped would be atoned for. (AP)

A court in Argentina ruled that an orangutan in the Buenos Aires zoo has been deprived of her freedom as a “non-human” person and could be freed to a sanctuary, according to Reuters. The lawsuit on behalf of 29-year-old Sandra was brought by the Association of Officials and Lawyers for Animal Rights, which argued that the orangutan’s cognitive functions were too developed for her to be treated as an object, the news service reported. A similar suit involving Tommy, a chimpanzee in New York, was thrown out last month. The zoo has 10 business days to appeal, according to Reuters. (EXPRESS)

A 5-year-old boy and his 7-year-old brother were recovering in a hospital Monday after surviving with their father for 10 days in the Australian wilderness with little food and in weather conditions that ranged from stormy to scorching. Their ordeal began Dec. 11 when dad Steven Van Lonkhuyzen took a wrong turn during a family road trip and then got his vehicle bogged in mud. The family was rescued Sunday after farmer Tom Wagner went searching and found them in the remote Expedition National Park. Police said the park is not usually visited this time of year because of extreme weather. (AP)

N. Korea goes offline; U.S. mum on role TECHNOLOGY North Korea experienced sweeping and progressively worse Internet outages extending into Monday, with one computer expert saying the country’s online access is “totally down.” The White House and the State Department declined to say whether the U.S. government was responsible. President Barack Obama said Friday the U.S. government expected to respond to the hacking of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., which he described as an act of “cyber vandalism” that he blamed on North Korea. Obama

did not say how the U.S. might respond, and it was not immediately clear if the Internet connectivity problems represented the retribution. The U.S. government regards its offensive cyber operations as highly classified. “As we implement our responses, some will be seen, some may not be seen,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. North Korea has denied it was responsible for hacking Sony. Doug Madory, the director of Internet analysis at Dyn Research, an Internet performance

U.N. focuses on N. Korea The U.N. Security Council placed North Korea’s bleak human rights situation on its agenda Monday, a groundbreaking step toward possibly holding the nuclear-armed but desperately poor country and leader Kim Jong Un accountable for alleged crimes against humanity. This appears to be the first time that any country’s human rights situation has been scheduled for ongoing debate by the U.N.’s most powerful body. An angry North Korea has said it would refuse to recognize Monday’s meeting. (AP)

company, said that the problems began over the weekend and grew progressively worse to the point that “North Korea’s totally down.” He said one benign explanation for the problem was that a router suffered a software glitch, though a cyberattack involving North Korea’s Internet service was also a possibility. Routing instabilities are not uncommon, but instead of getting better, as one might expect, “it’s getting worse, getting progressively degraded,” Madory said.

The proportion by which the reindeer population has declined in China since the 1970s, according to a study by researchers from Renmin University in Beijing. The animals are on the decline largely because of inbreeding and poaching, the researchers say. Reindeer populations currently live in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Alaska, Russia, Mongolia and China, and populations across the board are declining.

nation+world WASHINGTONPOST.COM | THE FACT CHECKER

Stretching the truth It’s time to round up the biggest Pinocchios of the year — mostly those claims that earned a four-Pinocchio rating from The Fact Checker in 2014. (Meaning they were political claims that turned out to be far from the truth.) The midterm elections dominated coverage of false claims, as an avalanche of negative ads tumbled across TV screens. This year, we are also highlighting the bipartisan failure of politicians for failing to accurately describe the impact of the Affordable Care Act, either inflating or deflating the numbers to a ridiculous extent. GLENN KES SLER

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.

Intraparty slap-downs are pretty rare, but Sens. Rand Paul and John McCain, R-Ariz., have radically different foreign-policy views. With no evidence but Internet rumors, some promoted by liberal groups, Paul declared that McCain unknowingly met with members of the Islamic State — and even had photographs taken — when he had slipped across the border with Syria to meet with rebel forces. But the claim was proven to be absolutely false. As we said as the time, “there are days when we regret we are limited to just Four Pinocchios.”

“I didn’t call the Islamic State a ‘JV’ team” President Barack Obama

Obama repeated a claim, crafted by the White House communications team, that he was not “specifically” referring to the Islamic State terror group when he dismissed the militants who had taken over Fallujah, Iraq, as a “JV squad.” But The Fact Checker had obtained the previously unreleased transcript of the president’s interview with The New Yorker, and it’s clear that’s what the president was referencing.

“Republicans have filibustered 500 pieces of legislation” President Barack Obama

Obama, a former senator, got quite a few things wrong here. He

spoke of legislation that would help the middle class, but he was counting cloture votes that mostly involved judicial and executive branch nominations. Moreover, he counted all the way back to 2007, meaning he even included votes in which he, as senator, voted against ending debate — the very thing he decried in his remarks. At best, he could claim the Republicans had blocked about 50 bills, meaning he was off by a factor of 10.

“A boy didn’t want a government lunch but one in a brown paper bag”

Sen. Rand Paul

Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis.

Ryan, equating school lunches to an “empty soul,” told an evocative and supposedly true story about an official who spoke to a boy who had rejected a school lunch because he wanted one in a brown bag. “A kid with a brown paper bag had someone who cared for him,” the boy supposedly said. But it turned out Ryan’s source for the story had borrowed it from a book — and the boy, now grown, tries to connect hungry kids with federal programs such as school lunches and food stamps. He even opposes Ryan’s budget plans. Oops. Ryan later said he regretted failing to verify the tall tale.

“Michelle Nunn funded organizations linked to terrorists” Republican David Perdue

Perdue ran ads claiming that the Points of Light Foundation once run by Michelle Nunn, his Democratic opponent in Georgia’s Senate race, “funded organizations linked to terrorists.” His evidence was only a leaked campaign plan for Nunn that said this would be a bogus attack by Republicans. There was no terrorist link. Points of Light was simply a pass-through for donations from eBay buyers and sellers to charities, including one well-regarded group that had the word “Islamic” in its name. Nevertheless, Perdue went on to win the election.

Bipartisan failure in speaking about Obamacare

WASHINGTONPOST.COM | THE FIX

No matter the party, politicians had trouble with basic math concerning the number of people gaining insurance through the Affordable Care Act. Here are some notable examples, all of which earned Four Pinocchios. (TWP) “Ten million Americans have health insurance today who would not have had it without the Affordable Care Act.” — Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., Feb. 9. Nope. When Durbin made this statement, the most generous estimate of people gaining insurance was 4 million. “We’ve got close to 7 million Americans who have access to health care for the first time because of Medicaid expansion.” — President Barack Obama, Feb. 20. Nope. Depending on the source, Obama was either six times too high or double. Either way, he was way off. There’s been “a net loss of people with health insurance.” — House Speaker John Boehner, March 13. Nope. Boehner added

apples and then subtracted oranges. At the point he made the statement, it was clear that the net gain was in the millions. “Only 64,000 Kentuckians have enrolled in Obamacare private plans, far fewer than 280,000 who received notices their plans were canceled.”— Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., March 29. Nope. The 280,000 was an outdated number and also did not include just individual plans. The number of individual policies affected by the law was about 100,000, and most never ended up getting notices in the first place.

upper-middle-class home checking on her baby in the crib and texting a spouse who’s away: “Love You. Good Night.” Then an intruder is shown breaking through the front door — and the next scene depicts yellow police-line tape and an armed police officer. The ad suggests that in voting for enhanced background checks, Landrieu — a Louisiana Democrat who lost her Senate re-election bid — made such a tragedy more possible. But even the NRA’s own lawyers acknowledged that nothing in the bill would have prevented the mother in this ad from buying a weapon to defend herself, even on short notice.

“Republican cuts to Ebola research are killing people” Agenda Project Action Fund

This ad was just a more extreme version of a Democratic talking point — that GOP budget cuts have harmed the nation’s ability to handle the Ebola outbreak. But Obama’s Republican predecessor oversaw big increases in public-health sector spending, and Democrats and Republicans in recent years have broadly supported efforts to rein in federal spending. In some years, Congress has allocated more money for agencies fighting Ebola than the Obama administration had requested.

ALONE IN THE GLOBAL HALL OF SHAME

“A referendum was held in Crimea in full compliance with democratic procedures and international norms.” Russian President Vladimir Putin

Putin’s speech announcing the annexation of Crimea was full of whoppers, but none more so than his claim about the referendum. The referendum was rushed, political opposition was squelched, and the choices did not allow for a “no.” (The options were either joining Russia — what the ballot called “reunification” — or remaining part of Ukraine with greater autonomy, effectively making the region independent in all but name.) Moreover, the Crimea vote met none of the conditions for a referendum in the Ukrainian constitution. Clearly it’s time for a fact-checking organization in Russia. (TWP)

who unsuccessfully challenged Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., stood in front of the camera and made statements that she must have known were false. Her central claim — that McConnell had pocketed $600,000 from anticoal groups — had already earned Four Pinocchios. The statement was based on money earned by McConnell’s wife, much of which came from being on a board of a bank that finances coal companies. So the “anti-coal” moniker was bogus. This desperate effort did little for Grimes, who lost even the coal counties to McConnell.

A demonstrator chants during a Dec. 13 rally and march in New York.

U.S. race relations are bad, most say Poll: Racial concerns approach highest point since Civil Rights era NATION A significant majority of Americans think race relations in the United States are bad, and race issues appear as pressing today as they have been at basically any point since the Civil Rights era, according to new polls. And all that was before Saturday, when according to all indications, the long-simmering tensions turned deadly. The murders of two New York City police officers by a man who had apparently signaled the killings would be in retaliation for the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown have ratcheted up the rhetoric in an already-pitched debate about police treatment of black men. And that debate is arguably as big now as it has been at any time in nearly half a century — since the Civil Rights era ended in the late 1960s. Polling from Gallup released Friday, the day before officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were killed, showed 13 percent of Americans said race relations

was the most pressing issue in the U.S. That number has only been higher once since the late 1960s — in 1992, when the beating of Rodney King by police officers led to riots in Los Angeles. And while African-Americans are more likely to see race relations as the most pressing problem — 22 percent say that it is — 9 percent of whites agree. An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released earlier in the week showed 57 percent of Americans rated race relations as “very bad” or “fairly bad.” The last time that was higher was in 1995, after the O.J. Simpson verdict. And even then, the number who said race relations were “very bad” was slightly lower (20 percent) than it is today (23 percent). The N BC / WS J poll a lso showed significant agreement among whites (58 percent “bad”) and blacks (63 percent “bad”). And again, these were the numbers before Saturday. It’s a pretty safe bet that issues of race and police will gain even more immediacy in the days and weeks ahead. Given this issue has been simmering for more than four months, it’s clear this is a significant moment in history. AARON BLAKE

CDC director back from W. Africa, says progress made against Ebola, challenges remain

Christmas NBA treats The Wizards getting a Christmas Day game shows the team’s rise to national prominence, but their meeting with the Knicks (noon, ESPN) isn’t as enticing as these three holiday matchups. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

3 1. No means no! After Colt McCoy led the Redskins to a surprising win over the Cowboys on “Monday Night Football,” ESPN Deportes reporter John Sutcliffe wanted to interview the QB on the field. Sutcliffe had provided no prior notice to Redskins senior vice president of communications Tony Wyllie that he wanted to interview McCoy, which led to the confrontation that produced the greatest D.C. sports phrase of the year. As Wyllie attempted to usher McCoy to the locker room, Sutcliffe started the interview anyway. Wyllie then whisked McCoy away and shouted, “No means no!”

Gruden said he read the post to his team.

4. Barbecue pierogi alert TNT analyst Shaquille O’Neal shouted “Barbecue Pierogi Alert” over first-half highlights of Wizards center Marcin Gortat dominating the Pacers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. “That’s sausage for all you dummies, like Chuck,” O’Neal said, attempting to explain what a pierogi was to co-host Charles Barkley. Except a pierogi isn’t a sausage. After the game, Gortat confirmed that a pierogi is a dumpling and said he’d never barbecued one.

2. Dry snitching

5. Haters, where you are?

“You got these cats dry snitching and telling media in-house business,” Redskins receiver Santana Moss told 106.7 The Fan’s Chad Dukes amid reports that there was serious discord in the Redskins’ locker room. Wondering about the definition of dry snitching? Urban Dictionary has you covered.

After the Wizards beat the Celtics in the regular-season finale to clinch the No. 5 spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs, Nene called out all of Washington’s doubters. “Haters, where you are?” he said. “Now you guys need to come here and congratulate us.”

3. Basic people

6. There is no wrong pipe!

Maryland moves up to No. 15 in AP poll

GETTY IMAGES

A day after beating Oklahoma State in its first true road test of the year, Maryland moved up two spots to No. 15 in the latest Associated Press poll released Monday. It is the highest ranking for Maryland (11-1) since Jan. 2, 2006, when the Terps were ranked No. 14. Kentucky (12-0) remains at the top of the poll this week, and Duke, Arizona and Louisville round out the top four, respectively. Clausen to miss finale because of concussion

In essay, Bell says he’s now with the Nats Right-handed reliever Heath Bell is known as much for his eccentricities as his late-inning stature. On Monday, the 37-year-old free agent took to Derek Jeter’s new website The Players Tribune to announce he signed a deal with the Nationals. Bell didn’t specify the type of deal in his essay, but given his recent struggles in the majors and even in Triple-A, it’s likely a minor league deal. Whatever the specifics, the deal gives Bell another chance to rediscover the form that made him an All-Star from 2009 to 2011. After departing San Diego for Miami as a free agent prior to the 2012 season, Bell never regained that form. In 13 major league games with Tampa Bay last year, he had a 7.27 ERA. Chicago Bears quarterback Jimmy Clausen will miss the final game of the season because of a concussion, and Jay Cutler will move back into the lineup. The Bears say Clausen was injured on a helmet-to-helmet hit by Detroit’s Ezekiel Ansah while scrambling late in Sunday’s loss to the Lions. Ansah received an unnecessary roughness penalty. Clausen will miss the final game against Minnesota. Clausen made his first start since he was a rookie with Carolina in 2010 after the Bears benched Cutler. Coach Ken Niumatalolo has led Navy to a 7-5 record this season, including a 17-10 win over Army on Dec. 13.

No time for Navy to rest before Poinsettia Bowl Midshipmen stay busy prepping for tonight’s game vs. San Diego St. COLLEGE FOOTBALL When Navy’s football team steps on the field to face San Diego State today (9:30 p.m., ESPN) at Qualcomm Stadium, the Poinsettia Bowl will be the culmination of an usually busy stretch. The Midshipmen practiced without their head coach and most assistants for three days while also juggling final exams in the wake of an emotionally and physically taxing victory over Army on Dec. 13. Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo did not oversee workouts in Annapolis because he was on the road recruiting, leaving

2

offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper and defensive coordinator Buddy Green in charge. Nine assistants also were out of town recruiting, and the entire team finally reunited for three days of practice in Chula Vista, Calif. With the Army-Navy game serving as the regular-season finale, Midshipmen coaches traditionally are one week behind their counterparts on the recruiting trail, so the staff has grown accustomed to thinning ranks at this time of the year. “We have such great kids, and you want to see them be successful because they work so hard,” Niumatalolo said. “It was tough, but I’m grateful that our captains Noah Copeland and Parrish Gaines did a great job of just staying the course.”

Niumatalolo is coming off a 13th straight victory over Army that elevated him to the winningest coach in Navy history. The emotional triumph gave him 56 wins, secured an 11th winning season in the past dozen years and made Niumatalolo the first coach to start his career 7-0 in the Army-Navy game. Navy’s last trip to San Diego ended in a 35-14 loss to the Aztecs in the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl. In the final season under then-coach Brady Hoke, San Diego State rolled up 555 yards, including 228 and three touchdowns from tailback Ronnie Hillman. Quarterback Ryan Lindley, who started Sunday for the Arizona Cardinals, passed for 265 yards and two touchdowns. GENE WANG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Athletes’ drinking gains Organic juice blends are becoming a locker room staple for professional players NUTRITION When Hillary Lewis started Lumi Juice in 2013, she figured she understood her customer base. Each 16-ounce bottle of her cold-pressed blends — produced in Charlottesville, Va. — contains 2 pounds of organic fruits and veggies. So they’re a natural fit for harried folks looking to sneak more produce into their diets. What wasn’t Lewis expecting? A call from the Washington Wizards this summer. That discussion led to a partnership between Lumi and the basketball team, and a flood of new ideas for drinks. “They’re high-performance athletes, and their feedback is really cool,” says Lewis, who’s been testing out protein powder mix-ins and considering various ingredient tweaks to target players’ needs and tastes. For instance, forward Kris Humphries recently requested a green juice with no fruit in it. So Lewis whipped one up for him with spinach, kale, cucumbers

and collard greens. If he likes it, she says, “I’ll bottle it for the world to drink.” A few years ago, the idea of muscular dudes downing this stuff courtside would have been hard to swallow. When the juice trend began, it was popular mostly with folks interested in weight-loss cleanses. But now, it’s attracting people looking for a rush of vitamins and minerals — and possibly even hoping to pack on some pounds. “It’s an extra meal without having to eat anything,” says Faisal Sultani, chef for the Washington Nationals, who’s been making juices for the baseball team since 2013. One guy requested one, another guy was curious to try one too, and now there’s a core group of daily juice drinkers. (It’s definitely not everyone on the team: “Some guys think they taste terrible,” Sultani says.) To make sure players get the most out of their juices, Sultani strives to use only organic

Old Town, new option Greenleaf Juicing Company started as a food cart in Portland, Ore. Now, it’s a chain that serves cold-pressed juices, smoothies, soups and more. For its first outpost beyond Portland, Greenleaf has targeted Alexandria. Its location at 1309 King St., opens Jan. 1 and is already taking orders for cleanse package deliveries ($20-$225) V.H.

ingredients, often tosses in turmeric — a natural anti-inflammatory — and encourages consumption within 15 minutes of preparation (lest they lose any nutrients). The drinks might not guarantee a win on the field, but they’re key to overall strategy. “Taking care of themselves is a huge part of their job,” Sultani says. Although he’s not at liberty to name which players are hooked on juice, a few have gone public with their habit. Earlier this year,

Solidcore — Michelle Obama’s workout studio of choice — opened a Ballston location Saturday

Bryce Harper showed his love for D.C.’s Jrink Juicery by tweeting a photo of him enjoying a beverage. Jrink is also a favorite of Nationals’ color commentator F.P. Santangelo, who wishes he’d been introduced to the benefits of juice back when he was playing professionally. “It’s my new coffee — it gives me so much energy,” Santangelo says. When he starts the day with a glass of greens, he gets the urge to exercise more and eat better. Those kinds of results may lead to more sports teams hopping on the juice bandwagon. Since starting to work with the Wizards, Lumi has also begun providing drinks to athletes at Virginia Commonwealth University, and Lewis is eager to pursue additional partnerships. To make that happen, she might want to give Lumi’s packaging a makeover. At her last Wizards meeting, the players all had one question: “Why does this have hearts on it?” VICKY HALLETT (EXPRESS)

Raising saddles The area’s indoor cycling scene is really on a roll. SoulCycle’s Bethesda studio opened Thursday. Zengo Cycle opens a new location Dec. 31 in Gaithersburg, Md. (You can already book spots in certain classes.) And Flywheel — a trendy chain known for its “TorqBoards” that display rider stats — plans to debut in the D.C. area in February with a Dupont Circle studio. “Everyone asks, ‘Is this a fad?’ No, it’s the most intense, but safest and most fun, exercise,” says Zengo founder Marc Caputo, who welcomes the competition to town. There’s still plenty of room to grow, he adds: Zengo’s 3-year-old Bethesda studio is being renovated, a fourth location (in the Mosaic District) is slated to open in March and special events, including a monthly live DJ ride, are in the works. Class up your New Year’s act

You’ll triumph playing doubles Q. My husband’s mom is a huge fan of the backhanded compliment: “Oh, this dish is lovely, I wonder if it should have baked a little longer,” “What a striking blouse! Only you could wear something with colors that loud,” etc. It drives me bananas. My husband is so used to it by now that he doesn’t even see that she’s actually being insulting. I am tired of gritting my teeth. IN-LAW FRICTION

Salsa: This intimate, intense dance requires “dancing with your soul,” Gekhman says. (And some hip shaking.) Start with both feet together. Then the female dance partner steps back with her right foot, steps in place with the left and brings back the right. The guy mirrors her.

Dance champion Garry Gekhman dips a student at a past Yuletide Ball. The 2015 event is coming up.

Waltz: It doesn’t get much more traditional than the box step: The female partner steps back with her right foot, then to the side with her left foot and brings her feet together. She then steps forward with her left, to the side with her right and brings her feet together again. (Guys do the reverse.) To make it fancier, try turning halfway through a box, Gekhman says.

Foxtrot: It seems particularly appropriate to foxtrot your way to the end of 2014 — the dance turned 100 this year. The female partner takes a step back with her right foot, another with her left, then steps to the right and brings her left to meet it. (Guys do the reverse.) The pace, Gekhman says, is slow, slow, quick, quick. After a few drinks, you’ll get it. STEPHANIE KANOWITZ (FOR EXPRESS)

MOVES Getting carried away at a party is a holiday tradition. But if photos of you twerking wind up on Facebook, you might kick off 2015 with regret. To ring in the new year in style, opt for time-tested ballroom dance moves, suggests Garry Gekhman, co-owner of the Chevy Chase Ballroom and an organizer of the Yuletide Ball (yuletideball.com) — a series of amateur and professional competitions and a cancer fundraiser — Jan. 8-11 at the Sheraton Premiere at Tysons Corner. DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

Forget the past — focus on the future Q. I’m unhappy with my life. Part of it is approaching 40 and wondering “Is this all?” But I’ve also made decisions I regret, including terminating a pregnancy and ending a relationship. I dropped out of grad school due to finances and have been stuck in nowheresville jobwise ever since. I’m depressed, but I have reason to be, so it’s not something meds will fix. OFF-COURSE AT 38 Thankfully, meds are not the only treatment for depression — although one wouldn’t guess that from seeing the cartoon neurons on Big Pharma’s TV commercials. Sometimes depression can be overwhelmingly genetic or physiological. But often it is an understandable and human reaction to life dissatisfaction and stress. And the latter issues

are exactly what can be helped by therapy. You won’t be able to undo your past, but you can better contextualize it, and learn how to actively embrace the life you have and make it more fulfilling. You can also learn to stop being ruled by your everpresent thoughts of regret. A CBT therapist, especially one who focuses on mindfulness, can help you move forward.

What a range of reactions you have at your disposal, from playing dumb and responding only to the complimentary part of the comment (“So glad you like it, thanks!”) to calling her out on the rude part: “Wow — sorry to hear that. I’m kind of surprised you said it.” But I’m not going to let your husband off the hook. I believe it’s his job to soothe tensions between his family and his partner. Clue him in (you can even hand him this letter). Then, at the very least, he can chime in with “I love that blouse, too” or “This chicken is perfect” so you won’t be going it alone. Finally, try your best to accept who she is. Whatever’s leading her to be this way has nothing to do with you. Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of the book “The Friendship Fix” (friendshipfix.com).

Iraq pushes programs aimed at sending a message of deterrence TELEVISION Haider Ali Motar was convicted of terrorism charges about a month ago for helping to carry out a string of Baghdad car bombings on behalf of the Islamic State extremist group. Now, the 21-yearold is a reluctant cast member in a popular reality TV show. “In the Grip of the Law” brings convicted terrorists face-to-face with victims in surreal encounters and celebrates Iraq’s beleaguered security forces. The show,

produced by state-run Iraqiyya TV, is among dozens of programs aimed at shoring up support for the troops after their humiliating defeat last summer at the hands of the Islamic State, which now controls about a third of the country. Last week, the crew arrived at the scene of one of the attacks for which Motar was convicted, with a heavily armed escort in military pick-up trucks and Humvees. After being pulled from an armored vehicle, a shackled Motar found himself face-to-face with the seething relatives of the victims of the attack. “Give him to me — I’ll tear him to pieces,” one of the relatives roared from

NYC theater plans reading of ‘The Interview’ script

Plan B Entertainment, Brad Pitt’s production company, has been selected by the Producers Guild of America to receive its 2015 Visionary Award, Variety reports. Plan B produced “12 Years a Slave,” which won this year’s Oscar for best picture, and “Selma,” a contender this season. Other movies under Plan B include HBO’s “The Normal Heart” and “Tree of Life.” The PGA said the company was selected “for producing stories that have breathed new life into some of the seminal … episodes of our shared history.” (EXPRESS)

New York City’s Treehouse Theater said Monday it will put on a free reading of “The Interview’s” script on Saturday, giving “an opportunity for people to come together in the name of free speech, in defiance of all who have threatened it.” Sony Pictures canceled the release of the movie, which revolves around the assassination of Kim Jong Un, after receiving threats from hackers. The Treehouse production will feature members of the Upright Citizens Brigade and will be held in its 50-seat black box theater. (AP)

behind a barbed wire barrier. Once the cameras were rolling, the show’s host Ahmed Hassan quizzed the prisoner. When Motar was confronted by one of the

victims, a young man in a wheelchair who lost his father in one of the attacks, the convict began weeping, as the cameras rolled. The message of the show, the

filming of which began last year, is that the security forces will bring perpetrators to justice. “We show our audiences the pictures, along with hard evidence, to leave no doubts that this person is a criminal and paying for his crimes,” Hassan said. All of the alleged terrorists are shown confessing to their crimes in one-on-one interviews. Security officials insist they are nevertheless sending a message of deterrence. “When people see that, it makes them think twice about crossing the law,” said the senior intelligence officer overseeing the shoot.
