Police have found the couple who lost their ring in a grate in New York’s Times Square shortly after becoming engaged late Friday, The New York Times reported. John Drennan and Daniella Anthony had already returned to the U.K. and bought a new ring when they heard NYPD had recovered the lost one. “We’re absolutely ecstatic,” Drennan said. He will return the new ring and have the original resized so it won’t slip off Anthony’s finger again. (EXPRESS)

A customized perspective REGION You might have seen Andrea Smith at Tysons Corner Center. She was the woman behind the camera, waving a plastic tambourine above her head, trying to make your baby smile as she sat in Santa’s lap. Smith enjoys taking photos of children with Santa Claus. But, like most other jobs she has held, the $13-an-hour position is temporary. It is a way for her to pay her bills, for now. Her real passion involves dirty, stained and unwanted sneakers and boots. She is a shoe beautifier. She takes shoes that might have been discarded and, using paint and other materials, transforms them into something eye-catching. She makes the unwanted once again desirable. “I bring them back to life,” the 26-year-old said. “Some of them be dead. There’s some shoes that could have never been worn again, and I made them look like a brand-new pair.” Smith has revived Ugg boots that have been scuffed and

rescued plain white sneakers that have been discolored. She has taken tiny Timberlands and made them beloved by kids by adding cartoon characters to them. But Smith’s story is not about finding success — yet. Last year, Smith made a decision to change the trajectory of her life a year ago in search of happiness. In her pursuit, she has caused others to look differently at what’s in front of them. A year ago, Smith was working at Starbucks as a shift manager
and attending the University of the District of Columbia. Her grades were good, but she was struggling to pay for her education without going into debt. Smith lost both her parents when she was young, and she didn’t have any financial support. So she considered whether a degree and the debt that would come with it would make her happy — and she decided it wouldn’t. “I feel like if you’re going to fail, you can always go back and do what was making you unhappy
in the first place,” Smith said. Now, she lives in the District by working a lot. She does landscaping. She makes jewelry. She takes photos for events. She also does catering and volunteers serving the homeless about once a month. And then there are her shoes, which she customizes for anywhere from $50 to $130. It takes her about two weeks to finish a pair, and when she does, she posts photos of them on Instagram. Her two pages have a following of more than 7,800 people. Last week, she also gained one more fan: Santa. Santa — who also goes by the name Mike Graham — saw the latest pair she was working on. From a black plastic bag, she pulled out a pair of Fila sneakers. One was white, and the other was painted pink, red, aqua and purple. “I was blown away,” Graham said. People talk about walking in someone else’s shoes, he said, but Smith lets you stand in your own a little longer. Suddenly, even Santa was looking a little differently at what was in front of him. Worker shot at Whole Foods
BALTIMORE
Md. woman killed after giving money from car
THE DISTRICT An employee was shot inside a Whole Foods Market during an attempted robbery Sunday morning, terrifying shoppers and diners — many with small children — who fled the popular gathering spot in the city’s trendy H Street corridor. D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said the victim, a cashier, was struck twice after struggling with the gunman, who demanded money and tried to reach into the cashier’s drawer. The cashier “heroically” resisted, Newsham said. The victim was transported to the hospital in serious condition, but later stabilized, Newsham said. No one else was harmed by the suspect, who as of late Sunday had not been apprehended, the chief told reporters outside the store. Police said Sunday afternoon they had located a red Honda Civic Zipcar connected with the suspect, but had not found the man who they believe carried out the shooting. Employees and customers described a chaotic, harrowing scene inside the store at 600 H Street NE. The shooting, at about 10:50 a.m., appeared to have occurred in checkout line 4, where drops of blood were visible on the cement floor alongside scattered grocery items. James Jackson, 38, who lives in the neighborhood, was eating

Customers were hustled into foodpreparation areas to take cover. In the meat department, an employee described customers “running through my cutting room into my cooler, and everybody was screaming, ‘Shots fired,’ ” said the employee, who did not want to be identified because he is not authorized to

The company declined to say whether the shooting would result in added security or provide details on when the store would reopen. The company did, however, issue a brief statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with our team member at this time, and we’re grateful for the first responders on the scene, including the Metropolitan Police Department and the DC Fire and EMS Department,” the company said. Maryland could raise smoking age

Effort to impose new rules on tobacco led by state’s black caucus MARYLAND Concerned about the long-lasting toll smoking has taken on the African-American community, the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland is leading an effort to impose restrictions on access to tobacco products. The caucus is pushing for Maryland to join a growing number of cities and states that have raised the age to buy tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, from 18 to 21. “I think it is a bill that is long overdue,” said Del. Dereck E. Davis, D-Prince George’s, the chairman of the House Economic Matters Committee and the bill’s lead sponsor. “There is no good reason for it to remain at 18.” The decision for the caucus to include the anti-tobacco measure as part of its 2019 legislative priorities follows action taken by lawmakers in D.C., New York City, California and Massachusetts in response to public health warnings about the effects of smoking and increased popularity of e-cigarettes. The proposed legislation also comes on the heels of a recent

In Maryland, advocates have tried for four years to pass legislation raising the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products to 21. D.C. narrows choices to lead public schools Two finalists to lead the District’s public schools emerged Saturday after a six-month search for a chancellor, according to people with knowledge of the process: Amanda Alexander, the interim D.C. chancellor, and Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Lewis D. Ferebee. In Alexander, the city would have a 20-year veteran of the school system who has built a team of deputies during her nine-month tenure as interim chancellor of the 49,000-student system. Ferebee is a high-profile figure in the education world who has led the Indianapolis schools since 2013, building relationships with the traditional school system and the charter sector. He was a finalist to lead the Los Angeles school district but withdrew from consideration in April. The names emerged following a last-minute meeting of the committee advising Mayor Muriel Bowser on the selection of a schools chancellor Saturday. The mayor’s office declined to confirm the identities of the finalists but issued a statement about Saturday’s meeting. “The Our Schools DC Leadership Committee had the opportunity to engage with the finalists in order to provide feedback to the Mayor before she makes her final decision,” the mayor’s office said. Alexander and Ferebee did not respond to calls seeking comment. PERRY STEIN

Macron tours damage after Paris hit by rioting Police: 133 people hurt, 412 arrested after city’s worst unrest in years PARIS French President Emmanuel Macron visited the graffiti-damaged Arc de Triomphe monument and held an emergency meeting on security Sunday, a day after central Paris was hit by France’s worst riot in a generation. Macron, who was meeting with his prime minister and interior and environment ministers, has vowed that those responsible for the violence and damage will pay for their actions. Macron paid tribute to the Unknown Soldier from World War I whose tomb is under the
monument. He then headed to a nearby avenue where activists wearing yellow jackets had torched cars, smashed windows, looted stores and thrown rocks at police on Saturday. There he met with firefighters, police officers and restaurant owners. Paris police said Sunday that 133 people had been injured and 412 had been arrested as protesters trashed the streets of the capital during Saturday’s demonstration against rising taxes and the high cost of living. Charred cars, broken windows and downed fences from the riot littered many of the city’s most popular tourist areas on Sunday, including major avenues near the Arc de Triomphe, streets around the famed Champs-Elysees

Avenue, and the Tuileries garden. Graffiti was also sprayed on many stores and buildings. French police responded with tear gas and water cannon, closing down dozens of streets and Metro stations as they tried to contain the riot. Police said 23 police officers were among the injured and 378 of the arrested have been put in police custody. It was the third straight weekend of clashes in Paris involving activists in the yellow vests and France’s worst urban violence since at least 2005. The grassroots protests began Nov. 17 with motorists upset over a fuel tax hike but now involve a broad range of demands related to France’s high cost of living. SYLVIE CORBET (AP)
Chapel works 24/7 for family of migrants Preachers have been taking turns leading a nonstop, round-theclock service at a small Protestant chapel in The Hague for more than a month in a bid to shield a family of Armenian asylum-seekers from deportation. Under a centuries-old tradition, Dutch authorities won’t enter a church while a service is underway. That means that for now, the Tamrazyan family — parents, their two daughters and their son — are safe from immigration authorities who want to send them back to Armenia. The Netherlands and other European countries are struggling with what to do about families who have been fighting for asylum for so long that their children have developed full lives in their new country. U.S. and China ‘call a truce’ BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA The United States and China reached a 90-day cease-fire in a trade dispute that has rattled financial markets and threatened world economic growth. The breakthrough came after a dinner meeting Saturday between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the Group of 20 summit in Buenos Aires. Trump agreed to hold off on plans to raise tariffs Jan. 1 on $200 billion in Chinese goods. The Chinese agreed to buy a “not yet agreed upon, but very substantial amount of agricultural, energy, industrial” and other products from the United States to reduce America’s huge trade deficit with China, the White House said. The truce, reached after a dinner of more than two hours, buys time for the two countries to work out their differences in a dispute over Beijing’s aggressive drive to supplant U.S. technological dominance. “It’s an incredible deal,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. “What I’ll be doing is holding back on tariffs. Origins of the rift The U.S.-China trade conflict began earlier this year when Trump imposed tariffs on $253 billion of imported Chinese steel, industrial products and consumer goods, including handbags, furniture and appliances. Trump and his unflinching negotiating tactics, securing a commitment from China to engage in talks on key U.S. economic priorities, with few obvious concessions by the U.S. Notably, however, the White House appears to be reversing course on its previous threats to tie trade discussions to security concerns, like China’s attempted territorial expansion in the South China Sea. “It’s great the two sides took advantage of this opportunity to call a truce,” said Andy Rothman, investment strategist at Matthews Asia. “This changes the tone and direction of the bilateral conversation.” The Trump-Xi meeting was the marquee event of Trump’s whirlwind two-day trip to Argentina for the G-20 summit after the president canceled a sit-down with Russian President Vladimir Putin over mounting tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The U.S. and China are locked in a dispute over their trade imbalance and Beijing’s tech policies. Washington accuses China of deploying predatory tactics in its tech drive, including stealing trade secrets and forcing American firms to hand over technology in exchange for access to the Chinese market. Former FBI Director James Comey reached a deal to testify privately to the House Judiciary Committee, where he is expected to be questioned about decisions made by the FBI in 2016. 200 nations gather in Katowice, Poland, for annual U.N. climate change conference
Trump shows low-drama side at G-20 summit POLITICS If there has been a constant to President Trump’s tumultuous first two years in office, it has been that his foreign trips have tended to be drama-filled affairs — the president barreling through international gatherings, disrupting alliances and upending long-standing U.S. policies. But at this year’s Group of 20 summit, Trump appeared to settle in among his global peers. Over two days in Argentina, Trump reached a trade cease-fire with China and signed a threeway trade deal with Mexico and Canada. With little public spectacle, he joined the leaders of the other member nations on the traditional group statement. He also buddied up with traditional allies. Faced with Russia’s spiking aggression in Ukraine, he canceled his sitdown with Vladimir Putin. And when former President George H.W. Bush died, Trump gave respectful remarks and canceled what would likely have been a raucous press conference. In previous global summits, the shock factor invariably came from Trump. This time, the viral moment of the weekend came when Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the two relative outcasts of the summit, exchanged an enthusiastic handshake. The president arrived back in the U.S. yesterday. The question now, as always, is: Just how long can this moment last? CATHERINE LUCEY AND ZEKE MILLER (AP)

Alleged leader of plot to kill Jamal Khashoggi messaged Saudi leader SAUDI ARABIA In the hours before and after journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and a senior aide who allegedly oversaw the assassination exchanged multiple messages, according to

The communications between the two men are another piece of evidence tying the crown prince to the killing of Khashoggi, a former palace insider turned prominent critic, who also was a contributing columnist to The Washington Post. The CIA has rated its assessment that Mohammed was involved in the killing at “medium-to-high confidence,” and privately, officials have said it is inconceivable that the prince, who exercises total authority over the government, could not have known about such an audacious operation. 1924-2018 Former President George H.W. Bush is returning to Washington as a revered political statesman, hailed by leaders across the political spectrum and around the world as a man not only of greatness but also of uncommon decency and kindness. Bush died late Friday at his Houston home at age 94. His crowning achievement as president was assembling the international military coalition that liberated the tiny, oil-rich nation of Kuwait from invading neighbor Iraq in 1991 in a war that lasted just 100 hours. He also presided over the end of the Cold War between the United States and the former Soviet Union. “We didn’t agree much on domestic policy, but when it came to the international side of things, he was a very wise and thoughtful man,” former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, a Democrat who lost the presidency to Bush in 1988, told The Associated Press on Saturday. He credited Bush’s ability to negotiate with former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev as playing a key role. “It was a time of great change, demanding great responsibility from everyone,” Gorbachev told the Interfax news agency. “The result was the end of the Cold War and nuclear arms race.” During that time and after, Gorbachev said, he always appreciated the kindness Bush and his family showed him. In Washington, the former Republican president won praise from leaders of both parties. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan lauded him for leading the nation with “decency and integrity,” while Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi said it was a “privilege to work with him.” Republican Sen. Tennessee said Bush “befriended political foes, reminding Americans that there is always more that unites us than divides us.” At the G-20 summit in Argentina, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was raised in East Germany, told reporters she likely would never have become her country’s leader had Bush not pressed for the nation’s reunification in 1990. A humble hero of World War II, Bush was just 20 when he survived being shot down during a bombing run over Japan. He had enlisted in the U.S. Navy on his 18th birthday. Shortly before leaving the service, he married his 19-year-old sweetheart, Barbara Pierce, in a
where he would become a scholar-athlete, captaining the baseball team to two College World Series before graduating Phi Beta Kappa after just 2½ years. After moving to Texas to work in the oil business, Bush turned his attention to politics in the 1960s, being elected to his first of two terms in Congress in 1967. He would go on to serve as ambassador to the United Nations and China, head of the CIA and chairman of the Republican National Committee before being elected to two terms as Ronald Reagan’s vice president. Soon after he reached the zenith of his political popularity following the liberation of Kuwait,

the U.S. economy began to sour and voters began to believe that Bush, never a great orator, was out of touch with ordinary people. He lost his bid for re-election to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, who would later become a close friend. The pair worked together to raise tens of millions of dollars for victims of a 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, which swamped New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in 2005. “Who would have thought that I would be working with Bill Clinton of all people?” he joked in 2005. Clinton said he would be “forever grateful” for that friendship. DARLENE SUPERVILLE AND JOHN ROGERS (AP)

A crucial test in Philly
It’s hard to say a game in early December is a must-win for a team just half a game out of first place in the NFC East, but tonight’s contest in Philadelphia certainly is crucial for the Redskins (6-5), who have lost three of their past four, including two in a row. The Eagles (5-6) need a victory to keep their playoff hopes realistic. The Redskins’ edge might be that Philadelphia’s secondary has been damaged by injuries, especially at cornerback. That could help fill-in quarterback Colt McCoy spark the offense in his second start of the season in place of Alex Smith. Here are five keys for the Redskins. LES CARPENTER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Get Peterson going
Get to Wentz
Set McCoy free
Get turnover edge
Stuff the run
Adrian Peterson carried the offense for much of the start of the season, but he hasn’t had a big game since Oct. 28, when the line started to fall apart because of Trent Williams’ injured thumb and then the season-ending injuries to the starting guards. And Washington’s offense isn’t the same without Peterson rushing for more than 90 yards. The team finally has stability on the line and has had a full week to game-plan around Colt McCoy. The probable returns of running back Chris Thompson and wide receiver Jamison Crowder could loosen the defense and free Peterson.
The Eagles’ Carson Wentz can be deadly with time to throw. Pro Football Focus lists his adjusted completion percentage at 82.3 when he isn’t under pressure. Washington’s defensive front has been a strength this season, but it hasn’t consistently generated the pass rush many expected. The Redskins did get to Dallas’ Dak Prescott on Thanksgiving, and they will have to do the same against Wentz. Should running back Darren Sproles return from a season-long hamstring injury, the Eagles could be as dangerous as they have been all season.
Colt McCoy has played with a conservative offense, no surprise given the circumstances. He came in as a replacement for the injured Alex Smith Nov. 18 against Houston and had only three days to prep for Dallas. But Washington now has been able to design a game plan for him. A week of working with the first-team offense should help, too. The returns of Chris Thompson and Jamison Crowder could give him weapons the team hasn’t had since early this season. McCoy talked this week about throwing more “50-50 balls,” giving his receivers chances to make more big plays.
A big part of the run to 6-3 and first place in the division came from rarely turning the ball over while forcing other teams into mistakes — Alex Smith was picked off only three times in the first nine games. The Redskins are tied for fourth in the NFL in takeaway differential (+4), but in their last two losses they’ve thrown five INTs. While Colt McCoy wants to give receivers like Josh Doctson chances for explosive plays, he has to be careful. If the Redskins give the ball away on offense and don’t get at least two turnovers as a defense, they probably won’t win tonight.
Last week, Dallas became the first team to have a 100-yard rusher against Washington this season. The Redskins’ defensive front has done a good job of keeping opponents from opening up the running game, rendering them one-dimensional. The Eagles have not been a great running team this season — although rookie Josh Adams has improved nicely the past four games — and desperately need the return of Darren Sproles (hamstring). By stopping the Eagles on the ground, Washington’s front can take pressure off its young secondary, helping it make plays.

Rookie QB Lamar Jackson ran for a score Sunday and the Ravens’ defense dominated in Atlanta as Baltimore (7-5) won its third in a row, keeping Jackson unbeaten while filling in for Joe Flacco. The Ravens held the Falcons (4-8) to 131 yards, their fewest since 1999. After two starts at home, Jackson started for the first time on the road. He had to leave for one series to be checked for a concussion but completed 12 of 21 passes for 125 yards and rushed 17 times for 75 yards. (AP)

Todd Gurley ran for 132 yards and two TDs as the Rams (11-1) overcame a sputtering start to beat the Lions in Detroit, clinching the NFC West title for a second straight season. The Rams also moved a step closer to earning home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs, taking a one-game lead over New Orleans (10-2), which lost to Dallas on Thursday. It is a cushion Los Angeles needs because its only loss was to the Saints. The Lions (4-8) have lost five of six. (AP)

I was wrong and I lied, Hunt says Running back Kareem Hunt, released Friday by the Chiefs after an explosive security video came to light, told ESPN on Sunday that he was “in the wrong” when he shoved and kicked a woman and that he regrets not making the right decision to “de-escalate” the situation. Hunt, 23, was cut after the video, published by TMZ, showed him pushing and kicking the woman in February in a hallway outside his Cleveland hotel apartment. He said the woman was a visitor who refused to leave. He admitted he lied to the Chiefs about what happened. For now, he is paid but is ineligible to play. Linebacker Reuben Foster, claimed last week by the Redskins, has the same status after a domesticviolence arrest. (TWP)

Aldrick Rosas kicked a 44-yard field goal in overtime and the host Giants beat Chicago, snapping the Bears’ five-game win streak. The Giants (4-8) blew a 10-point lead in the final 1:13 of regulation. Chicago (8-4) forced OT with a 1-yard touchdown pass from halfback Tarik Cohen to Anthony Miller as time expired in the fourth quarter. The trick play was set up by a recovered onside kick, a play in which the Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. did not dive for the loose ball. (AP)

Packers fire McCarthy after loss to Cardinals The Packers on Sunday fired coach Mike McCarthy and made offensive coordinator Joe Philbin the interim head coach. The move announced by team president Mark Murphy came after a 20-17 home loss to the Arizona Cardinals, dropping Green Bay to 4-7-1. Green Bay lost for the fifth time in six games while the Cardinals improved to 3-9. McCarthy was in his 13th season as coach. The Packers won the Super Bowl under him in the 2010 season. His record with Green Bay was 125-77-2. Murphy said the coaching search will begin immediately. (AP)

The host Jaguars (4-8) shut down Andrew Luck and the Colts, who had won five in a row and fell to 6-6. Luck completed 33 of 52 passes for 248 yards and an interception, but he was sacked three times after getting hit just five times in the month of November. Indy finished with 265 yards and was 5-of-18 on third down. Jacksonville recorded its seventh shutout all-time. (AP)

Berhalter named coach of U.S. national team Gregg Berhalter, 45, was hired Sunday to coach the U.S. men’s national team, making him the first person to run the Americans after playing for them at the World Cup. Berhalter, who spent the past five seasons as coach of Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew, represents a generational change for a team staggered by its failure to reach this year’s World Cup after seven straight appearances. He follows interim coach Dave Sarachan, who stepped in when Bruce Arena, then 66, quit in 2017 after the U.S. lost to Trinidad and Tobago and didn’t qualify for the Cup. (AP)

XFL expected to relaunch with a team at Audi Field
Wizards center Dwight Howard is expected to miss two to three months after undergoing spinal surgery to relieve pain in his glutes. The team announced that he underwent a lumbar microdiscectomy Friday and would be re-evaluated in two to three months. He had similar surgery in 2012. Howard, 32, has played only nine games this season. The Wizards visit the Knicks tonight (7:30, NBCSWA) to begin a four-game trip. (EXPRESS)
The XFL plans to include a franchise in Washington when it relaunches in 2020, according to a person familiar with the process. The new pro team would play home games at Audi Field, sharing the stadium with D.C. United at least part of the year. The XFL scheduled a news conference Wednesday to announce the cities involved. The league is owned by pro wrestling magnate Vince McMahon, who owned it during its one-season run in 2001. (TWP)

Sooners get last spot in football’s final four Big 12 champs will face Alabama; Georgia and Ohio St. miss semifinals COLLEGE FOOTBALL Epitomizing a football era of dazzling, tireless offense, Oklahoma became the fourth and final team selected to the College Football Playoff on Sunday, outlasting contenders Ohio State and Georgia in the closing assessment of the 13-member selection committee. The No. 4 Sooners (12-1) will play No. 1 Alabama (13-0) in a semifinal in the Orange Bowl. The other semifinal, as expected, will pit No. 2 Clemson (13-0) against No. 3 Notre Dame (12-0) in the Cotton Bowl. On the strength of its 39-27 win over No. 15 Texas on Saturday in the Big 12 championship game, Oklahoma earned its third playoff bid in the five seasons thus far of the four-team concept. The Sooners average 577.9 yards per game on offense and a staggering 8.75 yards per play, as well as 49.5 points per game. All three statistics are No. 1 nationally. In a sport with a notable lack of parity, Alabama kept its spotless playoff legacy intact with a fifth bid in five seasons, while Clemson got a fourth straight approval. Notre Dame will make its playoff debut.

1 ‘Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland’ 10 p.m. today on HBO
AMAZON STUDIOS
Alex Borstein won an Emmy for playing a comedy manager on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
Managing expectations ‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ scene-stealer Alex Borstein is happy keeping a low profile STREAMING Alex Borstein is still flummoxed by that banner night in midSeptember. As she recalls the 2018 Emmy Awards, the word “strange” rolls of her tongue frequently. So does “weird.” And “wonderful.” The 47-year-old actor arrived at the Microsoft Theater already a winner: She had claimed an Emmy at the Creative Arts ceremony a week prior for her voiceover work on Fox’s “Family Guy,” on which she has played Lois Griffin since the show’s debut in 1999. Then Borstein stepped into the spotlight at the main event, winning outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for playing brash stand-up comic manager Susie Myerson on Amazon Prime Video’s breakout hit “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” “I still don’t really understand it,” says Borstein, whose career was kick-started when she joined the sketch series “MADtv” in 1997. “It’s so weird to all of a sudden have anybody notice.” “ Mrs. Maisel” ended up
grabbing five trophies during the Emmys broadcast, including one for best comedy series. With Season 2 arriving Wednesday on Amazon, the show returns as both a critical darling and a beloved crowd-pleaser. (Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos owns Express.) Set in 1950s New York, the series follows Miriam Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), a quick-witted mother of two who finds catharsis on the stand-up stage after her husband (Michael Zegen) walks out on her. As Miriam’s streetsmart manager, Susie must help her client navigate the casual sexism of the era. Although Borstein steals scene after scene thanks to Susie’s rapid-fire one-liners and unflinching honesty, she balances the character’s coarse exterior with an underlying empathy. “I love having somebody who is kind of hard but cracks open some of that vulnerability,” says Borstein, who acknowledged “Mrs. Maisel” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino had to sell her “pretty aggressively” to Amazon
“I still don’t really understand it. It’s so weird to all of a sudden have anybody notice.” ALEX BORSTEIN, discussing her pair
of recent Emmy wins
executives before she got the role. “You see that she’s just putting up so much of this exterior.” While Miriam’s candid style onstage grabs her headlines as a comic to watch, that approach also makes her enemies in the insular New York comedy scene — leaving Susie to cope with the consequences. All the while, there’s a tension threatening to disrupt the odd-couple dynamic between Miriam, the daughter of well-off Upper West Side parents, and Susie, whose Season 2 storyline explores her isolated upbringing and increasingly dire financial straits. “If you raise a cat in a warm,
Hollywood Reporter: Nick Nolte joins “Star Wars” TV series “The Mandalorian”
cuddly home and another one is feral and has to fend for itself, you’ll have a wild cat and a tame cat,” Borstein says. “I think that’s how you could best describe her — Susie’s a bit of a feral cat.” Borstein, who swapped life in Hollywood for a move to Barcelona three years ago, is happy to maintain a low profile. Her next performance will come in the musical “[title of show]” this winter at the Jocular Theatre, a modest, English-speaking venue in Barcelona. She is also writing a play of her own: a 1980s-set family drama partially inspired by her brother’s struggle with hemophilia. It all adds up to something of a strange path — just the way Borstein wants it. “I think I got very lucky in having the exact career I think I was made for,” Borstein says. “Being so lucky getting to work and be paid, but live under the radar. That’s just what I assumed I’d always be or always have, and I like it.”
This documentary explores the case of Sandra Bland, a 28-year-old AfricanAmerican who, in 2015, was found hanging in her Texas jail cell after being arrested for a traffic violation.
2 ‘Counterpart’ 9 p.m. Sunday on Starz
Oscar winner J.K. Simmons returns as both United Nations pencil pusher Howard Silk and his more daring counterpart from a parallel reality — called the “Prime” world — in this Cold War-influenced sci-fi spy thriller. James Cromwell joins the cast for Season 2.

What if it turns out Nick Groff and Katrina Weidman were actually ghosts the whole time?
MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE
‘Paranormal’ activity: Investigators look for signs of the afterlife Who would have imagined that the late John McCain and his wife, Cindy, were fans of “Paranormal Lockdown,” the cable series in which two investigators hole up in an allegedly haunted facility for 72 hours and seek signs of the supernatural? But that’s what Meghan McCain said when she interviewed Nick Groff and Katrina Weidman, the stars of the show, on “The View” earlier this year: Her parents were “both obsessed.” If that makes you wonder what the show is like, you’re in luck: Season 3 launches Tuesday on the Destination America channel, with back-to-back
episodes at 9 p.m. (its regular time slot) and 10 p.m. In the premiere, Nick and Katrina head to a decrepit West Virginia facility with the lovely name Sweet Springs Resort Park. Built in 1795, the brick property has been a spa, a TB sanitarium and an old-age home. In 2015, whitebearded Ashby Berkley, an entrepreneur with an interest in historic building, acquired Sweet Springs at auction. Now, he hopes to revive it as a resort. Except you do have to wonder: Will guests want to come if they’re hanging out and, like Nick, feel a hand grab their leg? The fearless investigators use a fake-looking device they call a “poltercom” (which resembles an old-timey clock)
$25.8M
to “sweep radio channels to receive real-time spirit communication.” When Nick isn’t sweeping, he’s busy asking questions of invisible spirits, like, “Do you want us to go to the pool?” He thinks he hears a voice say, “Not safe.” He jumps in anyway. At the end of the episode, Nick and Katrina present their “subjective” and “objective” evidence to the owner — like a recording of a voice that says “help me” and a report of a noise that sounds like a chair being dragged. Taking it all in, Berkley thinks “the property is speaking to me.” I do, too, and the message is: Sell this place! The most appealing part of the show is not the paranormal investigation, which seems, er, a tad sketchy, but the curious places Nick and Katrina go. I’m looking forward to their lockdown at the honky-tonk Bobby Mackey’s Music World in Wilder, Ky., where there’s supposedly a portal to hell.

Tyson denies sexual misconduct allegations
Report: Hanks in talks to play ‘Pinocchio’s’ Geppetto
Astrophysicist and TV personality Neil deGrasse Tyson says he will cooperate fully with a Fox and National Geographic Networks investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against him. Patheos.com recently published accounts from three women who say that Tyson behaved in a sexually inappropriate manner toward them. In a Facebook post Saturday, Tyson denied the accusations. (AP)
Tom Hanks is in talks to play Geppetto in Disney’s remake of “Pinocchio,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Paddington” filmmaker Paul King is set to direct, with the script co-written by King, Chris Weitz and Simon Farnaby. The film will mark the latest live-action adaptation of a Disney animated classic, following 2016’s “The Jungle Book,” 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast,” and upcoming remakes of “Dumbo,” “The Lion King” and “Aladdin.” (EXPRESS)

“Why [did] Deontay Wilder walk out looking like he’s about to steal a Dalmatian?” @DAMAGICIANBEATS, joking about
the boxer’s entrance attire for his fight Saturday night against Tyson Fury. Viewers of the match were confused by Wilder’s get-up, with this Twitter user comparing him to Cruella De Vil from “101 Dalmatians.” Others compared him to “Game of Thrones” characters and Big Bird from “Sesame Street.” The heavyweight title bout ended in a draw.
“Y’all, ‘A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding’ is total garbage. I’ll probably watch it like 10 more times.” @MOVIEYM, tweeting about the sequel to Netflix’s 2017 hit “A Christmas Prince.” Fans expressed disappointment that it didn’t live up to the hype of the first movie and pointed out plot holes. For example, @RailingGazer noted that protagonist Amber says it’s been 364 days since she got engaged on New Year’s Eve — but the movie starts during Christmas. Others said the movie’s ridiculousness was exactly why they loved it.
“Banishing a classic like ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ from airplay is ridiculous. Courtship and flirting in song have been a staple for decades.” @RAYMONDARROYO, tweeting about Ohio radio station WDOK Star 102.1 pulling the song over listener complaints. The Christmas duet has ignited controversy for lyrics that some interpret as endorsing sexual coercion.
“Remember, it’s not 2018 everywhere.” @SANDYLANCELEY, reacting after Egyptian actress Rania Youssef was charged with public obscenity for wearing the above dress to the Cairo Film Festival. Conservative Egyptians were outraged over the way the see-through lower portion exposed Youssef’s legs. Though Youssef has apologized, she will go on trial over the charges on Jan. 12 and could face up to five years in prison if convicted.

Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra shared photos from their wedding festivities in India over the weekend, which included a Christian ceremony Saturday, a Hindu ceremony Sunday and various related events. Chopra posted a series of photos to Instagram from the couple’s Sangeet, a prewedding ritual that included live musical performances. “It all began as a fierce song & dance competition between the families but ended, as always, as a huge celebration of love,” she wrote. Ozzy Osbourne said he almost died from a manicure gone wrong, which required him to undergo emergency surgery for an infection. Speaking to the Daily Star, Osbourne said he canceled a number of shows on his U.S. tour because of an infection on his right thumb that caused it to swell to the size of a “f---ing lightbulb.” Doctors told Osbourne the infection could have been fatal if it had spread to his bloodstream.
