Thirsty Indian monkey takes fueling up way too literally

Because no one has tried the old switching-price-tags ploy before

Several motorcyclists in Panipat, India, were ticked because a gasoline thief was targeting their bikes. They set up a stakeout near their workplace and saw that a monkey was sipping the gas through a tube leading to the gas tank, UPI reported Tuesday. “The monkey was addicted to the petrol,” said Gaurav Leekha, who runs a volunteer group in Panipat. “It would refuse to eat even bananas and nuts if anyone offered it.” (EXPRESS)

Home sweet home is more than just a saying for a couple in Omaha, Neb. Becky Reilly said thousands of honeybees invaded her attic and produced so much honey that it dripped down the side of the house. She and her husband hired workers to clean up the mess and install a new roof. Roofer Jason Starkey estimated Thursday that he recovered 40 pounds of honey as he removed the bees and their hive before making repairs. (AP)

Authorities in Vero Beach, Fla., said a woman tried to sneak more than $1,800 worth of electronics through a Walmart self-checkout by switching the items’ price tags with those from clearance items. Cheyenne Amber West, 25, was charged Monday with felony shoplifting and felony grand theft. A security guard told police he saw her try to buy a computer, video game controllers and other items with tags that added up to only $3.70. (AP)

A homeless man told me, “You looked good on ‘60 Minutes’ the other night.” At the Capital Grille, a Democratic congressman wanted me to meet his constituents. When I told him, he said, “Oh, hell, come on anyway. They won’t know the difference.”

Steve Bannon’s look-alike This D.C. lobbyist has to tell people that he’s not ‘that guy’

Keith Heard, former chief of staff for Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., is a lobbyist and the president of Key Impact Strategies. Heard, who is 61 and lives in Mississippi, keeps an apartment on Capitol Hill, not far from his doppelganger, Breitbart chairman and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon. FRANCES STEAD SELLERS (THE WASHINGTON POST) When did you realize you are a dead ringer for Steve Bannon? I didn’t know for a while. But on election night my text messages started blowing up: “Saw you in New York.” “What are you doing up on the stage?” I texted back, “Everybody’s gotta be somewhere.” But I didn’t pay much attention. It didn’t hit me that it was Bannon they were talking about.

Bannon has compared himself to Dick Cheney, Darth Vader and Satan. How does that make you feel? Prettier than him. It’s interesting — a friend and I, we were at a meeting here in Washington, standing outside the Hyatt on New Jersey [Avenue NW], and a union was having a meeting there. Some guys were looking at

us, staring at us. We went inside and a couple came up and wanted to know [if I was Bannon]. I said, “No, I’m not.” They were nice to me, but they were giving me some tough looks at first. One night, we were at the National Building Museum for a big fundraiser that the president always comes to. My table happened to be up front, to the side of the podium. A congressman comes over, gives me his card and asks me to meet some of his constituents. When I told him, “I’m not who you think I am,” he reached over, grabbed his card out of my hand and walked off.

Washingtonians are among the most likely consumers in the country to max out their credit cards, an analysis finds. Lending Tree mined data from its users, examining rates of consumers with at least one maxed-out card, and how much credit consumers were using, in order to rank cities. D.C. scored 13th on the list of most-maxed-out cities, which was led by San Diego. Lending Tree also noted that one card close to the limit is not always a bad sign, because some spenders put everything on one card. (EXPRESS)

What’s the biggest difference between you and Bannon? We have a lot of similarities. I’m a populist conservative, but I’m a big supporter of the Republican Party. ‘It could have been Dr. Seuss’

VIRGINIA ELECTION Michael Ross has been a loyal Republican for as long as he can remember. But voting in Virginia’s gubernatorial election Tuesday, the retired advertising man said he rejected every Republican on the ballot and chose Democrats — whether he knew anything about them or not. His reasons were not rooted in any particular candidate, issue or a change in political philosophy, but in an ever-expanding antipathy toward President Trump and the party that propelled him to the White House. “I’ve been with the Republicans my whole life, but what the party has been doing is appalling,” said Ross, 72, as he was about to get a haircut Wednesday in Lorton, Va. “It’s completely divisive and the politics of this country has gone berserk. Trump has demonstrated that he doesn’t deserve to be president.” On the ballot, Virginia’s election was about the state’s future and who would assume a slew of elective offices, from governor to attorney general to seats in the House of Delegates. Yet a year after Trump won the White House, voters in Virginia said in post-election interviews that their choices were shaped more by their attitude toward the president than any candidate close to home. Ask them to identify an issue

For many in Virginia, all it took to get their vote was being a Democrat

In Virginia, many voters said in post-election interviews that their choices were mostly shaped by President Trump.

championed by Governor-elect Ralph Northam, a Democrat, and they may fumble for an answer. Ask them the name of the man who was elected lieutenant governor and they might have to think for a moment. Ask them to identify whom they chose for the House of Delegates, and they were likely to reply with a blank stare. But ask them why they voted Democratic, and their answers were precise and infused with anger. “I don’t like Trump and I don’t like where our politics are going,” said Patty Potts, 48, an education programmer who lives in Lorton. Her husband, Mike Potts, 51, a software process engineer,

regards himself as a fiscal conservative and a loyal Republican who researches candidates before voting. But he chose all Democrats on Tuesday, and said he didn’t need to study the candidates’ biographies or positions. The fact that they weren’t Republicans was all he needed to know. “The Republicans are just so negative,” Mike Potts said. “We have kids — 10 and 7 — and we need a little hope. The Republicans aren’t giving us any. I’m protesting and it feels good in the sense that I’m registering my concerns about it. Normally, I would like to know a little more about whom I’m voting for but right now I’m overwhelmed by

the protest aspect of it.” His sentiment was shared by Democrats, who said they were focused more on who they were opposing than who they were supporting. “It could have been Dr. Seuss or the Berenstain Bears on the ballot and I would have voted for them if they were a Democrat,” said Toren Beasley, 60, a marketing executive. “I might do more analyses in other years. But in this case, no. No one else gets any consideration because what’s going on with the Republicans — I’m talking about Trump and his cast of characters — is stupid, stupid, stupid. I can’t say stupid enough times.” PAUL SCHWARTZMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Flowers, fruits and vegetables, which have withstood the ups and downs of the weather so far this fall, are in their final hours. A killer freeze is expected across the entire Washington region Friday night and Saturday morning behind an Arctic blast Thursday night. Part of Red Line to close 16 days starting Nov. 25 TRANSPORTATION Metro will close a 4-mile stretch of the Red Line for 16 days at the end of November, part of a project to overhaul the tracks and rebuild an interlocking where the tracks cross over. From Nov. 25 to Dec. 10, there will be no trains between the Fort Totten and Silver Spring stations. Shuttle buses will provide service between those stations, making a stop at Takoma on the way. The project, which was first announced in June, is expected to cause significant delays for Red Line riders. For the duration of the project, there will be a 12-minute wait for trains between the Glenmont and Silver Spring stations. From Shady Grove to Fort Totten, there will be 10-minute waits between trains, though that will decrease to five-minute waits during weekday peak periods from Grosvenor to NoMa-Gallaudet. After 9:30 p.m. every day, the wait between trains will be 15 minutes. Metro’s warning: If you can avoid the Glenmont end of the Red Line, you should. “Customers who normally use Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton or Glenmont are strongly encouraged to use other Red Line stations, travel during off-peak times or consider alternate travel options,” Metro said in a statement. VIRGINIA Rep. Bob Goodlatte, who leads the House Judiciary Committee, announced Thursday that he will retire at the end of his 13th term, becoming the latest GOP chairman not to seek re-election even though Republicans control all levers of power in Washington. Goodlatte’s tenure as chairman ends in December 2018 due to term limits. In a statement, the Virginia lawmaker described that as the “natural stepping-off point” and a chance to begin a new chapter. Goodlatte, 65, said that every two years, he and his wife, Maryellen, sit down to discuss whether he should run again.

He’s been staunchly conservative on most fiscal and social issues, but did find common ground with Democrats on technology and national security. Most recently, Goodlatte joined with committee Democrats to sponsor a bill that would require law enforcement agencies to get a court order before viewing intelligence collected by the National Security Agency. A fiscal hawk, Goodlatte backed a 2012 amendment that would have cut defense spending by more than $7 billion.

Presence of U.S. makes climate talks awkward

TOY HALL OF FAME

A WWII-era game, Clue, gets its due Mystery solved: The board game Clue, the Wiffle Ball and the humble paper airplane were the newcomers named Thursday to the National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, N.Y. The whodunit game Clue still sells millions of copies each year since being patented by a British couple during World War II. Like Clue, the plastic Wiffle Ball — which has slots to make it dance in the air — remains a big seller more than six decades after it was invented. The history of the paper airplane is less certain, although Leonardo da Vinci gets credit for designing flying machines out of parchment in the 15th century. (AP)

ENVIRONMENT How’s this for awkward? The U.S. has a delegation at international climate talks in Bonn, Germany, that will be telling other nations what they should do on an agreement that the president wants no part of. President Trump has promised to withdraw the U.S. from the 2015 Paris climate pact in which nations set their own goals to reduce the emissions of heattrapping gases, but because of legal technicalities, America can’t get out until November 2020. “It’s like having a guest at a dinner party who complains about the food but stays anyway,” said Nigel Purvis, who worked on climate issues in the State Department for Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Most of the Bonn conference, which began Monday and runs through Nov. 17, will focus on coming up with rules on how countries report emissions of heat-trapping gases and how transparent they are. The U.S. used to be the leading force in pushing for tougher rules and more openness, Purvis and other experts said. The rules probably won’t be as strong now, they said. “If it’s left to Chinese leadership, which is what’s left, you will have less transparency,” said

Trump officials attend meeting after declaring Paris accord withdrawal

The U.S. cannot officially withdraw from the Paris accord until November 2020, so it’s attending the climate talks in Bonn, Germany, this month.

MIT professor Henry Jacoby. The U.S. government is becoming increasingly isolated on climate change. On Tuesday, the Syrian government, mired in war and the last United Nations country not to sign the Paris accord, announced it would sign the pact. That means the U.S. will be alone when it pulls out. “The rest of the world needs to get on and negotiate ... and treat the U.S. as more of an observer in the process, and the U.S. should act that way,” Greenpeace International Director Jennifer Morgan said. That’s not what the U.S. plans. As meetings started Monday, U.S. negotiator Trigg Talley said, “The president has made clear

that we will engage countries on energy and climate change related issues and we look forward to working with colleagues and partners to advance the work here over these two weeks and beyond.” Three U.S. governors, some mayors, corporate leaders and students will also be attending. At a “We’re Still In” event Thursday at the talks, James Brainard, mayor of Carmel, Ind., joined in criticizing the Trump climate policy, saying the U.S. will cut emissions regardless of the president. “He talks about greatness a lot,” Brainard said. “Great countries care about the condition of the planet they are going to hand off to their children and grandchildren.” SETH BORENSTEIN (AP)

Claims rock Ala. race POLITICS A growing chorus of Senate Republicans, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., have called on Senate candidate Roy Moore to withdraw from a special election in Alabama if allegations prove true that the former judge initiated a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl nearly four decades ago. “If these allegations are true, he must step aside,” McConnell said in a formal statement on behalf of all Republican senators. Moore has denied the allegations. One of Moore’s accusers, Leigh Corfman, said that in 1979, when she was 14 years old, Moore approached her and her mother outside a courtroom in Etowah County, Ala. At the time, Moore was a 32-year-old assistant district attorney. Corfman and her mother said that Moore offered to watch the girl while her mother went inside for a child custody hearing. “He said, ‘Oh, you don’t want her to go in there and hear all that. I’ll stay out here with her,’ ” said Corfman’s mother, Nancy Wells, 71. “I thought, how nice for him to want to take care of my little girl.” Moore asked for Corfman’s phone number, she says. Days later, she says, he picked her up around the corner from her house in Gadsden, drove her about 30 minutes to his home in the woods, told her how pretty she was and kissed her. On a second visit, she says, he took off her shirt and pants and removed his clothes. He touched her over her bra and underpants, she says, and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear. “I wanted it over with — I

wanted out,” she remembers thinking. “Please just get this over with. Whatever this is, just get it over.” Corfman says she asked Moore to take her home, and he did. Two of Corfman’s childhood friends say she told them at the time that she was seeing an older man, and one says Corfman identified the man as Moore. Wells says her daughter told her about the encounter more than a decade later, as Moore was becoming more prominent as a local judge. “I have prayed over this,” Corfman says, explaining why she decided to tell her story now. “All I know is that I can’t sit back and let this continue, let him continue without the mask being removed.” In addition to Corfman, three other women interviewed by The

Can he be disqualified? Roy Moore denied the allegations and has given no indication that he will exit the Alabama Senate race. The state Republican Party has the power to disqualify Moore from the Dec. 12 election, though it is too late to remove his name from the ballot. Under Alabama state law, the ballot cannot be changed within 76 days of an election. In the event of either disqualification or withdrawal, the appropriate state canvassing boards would not certify any votes cast for Moore. Alabama state law does also allow write-in votes in general elections. (TWP)

Washington Post in recent weeks say Moore pursued and kissed them when they were between the ages of 16 and 18 and he was in his early 30s, episodes they say

Harlem pre-K school shuttered after boy, 3, with dairy allergy dies from eating grilled cheese sandwich

they found flattering at the time, but troubling as they got older. None of the three women say that Moore forced them into any sort of relationship or sexual contact. The legal age of consent in Alabama, then and now, is 16. Under Alabama law in 1979, and today, a person who is at least 19 years old who has sexual contact with someone between 12 and 16 years old has committed sexual abuse in the second degree. The law then and now also includes a section on enticing a child younger than 16 to enter a home with the purpose of proposing sexual intercourse or fondling of sexual and genital parts. That is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. In a written statement, Moore denied the allegations. “These allegations are completely false and are a desperate political attack by the National Democrat Party and The Washington Post on this campaign,” Moore, now 70, said. The campaign also said that if the allegations were true, they would have surfaced during his previous campaigns, adding, “This garbage is the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation.” Other Republican senators weighing in included Jeff Flake of Arizona, David Perdue of Georgia, John Thune of South Dakota, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Richard C. Shelby of Alabama and Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called on Moore to step aside — without couching his statement with “if true” language. “The allegations against Roy Moore are deeply disturbing and disqualifying,” McCain said. “He should immediately step aside and allow the people of Alabama to elect a candidate they can be proud of.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Texas church where 26 died will be razed SUTHERLAND SPRINGS The Texas church where 26 people were killed by a gunman during Sunday services will be demolished, the pastor said. Pastor Frank Pomeroy told leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention this week that it would be too painful to continue using First Baptist Church as a place of worship. Pomeroy discussed the plan with the denomination’s top executives, who traveled to the rural community in a show of support. A national Southern Baptist spokesman, Sing Oldham, said the pastor described the building as “too stark of a reminder” of the massacre. Pomeroy expressed hope that he could turn the site into a memorial for the dead and put up a new building on property the church owns, Oldham said. Charlene Uhl, the mother of 16-year-old Haley Krueger, who died in the attack, agreed that the church should come down. “There should still be church but not here,” she said Thursday as she visited a row of white crosses commemorating the victims in front of the church. Other sites of mass shootings have been torn down, including Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman killed 20 children and six adults in December 2012. A new school was built elsewhere. Of about 20 people wounded in the church attack, 11 were still hospitalized Thursday. PAUL J. WEBER AND EMILY SCHMALL (AP)

Senate GOP reveals tax bill

Legislation would delay corporate tax cut, undo state, local deductions

Trump says U.S., China can solve world problems

J. SCOTT APPLEWHITE (AP)

POLITICS Senate Republicans revealed the details of their sweeping tax legislation Thursday, including a one-year delay in plans for a major corporate tax cut despite strident opposition from the White House and others in their own party. Their bill would leave the prized mortgage interest deduction untouched for homeowners, in a concession to the powerful real estate lobby, but would ignore a House compromise on the hot-button issue of state and local tax deductions. On the other side of the Capitol, the House Ways and Means Committee approved its own version of the legislation — on a party-line 24-16 vote — amid intense political pressure on the GOP to push forward on the first major rewrite of the U.S. tax code in three decades. Yet as the Senate Finance Committee unveiled its bill, a few stark differences emerged from the version approved by the House tax-writing committee, underscoring the challenges ahead in getting both chambers to agree on the legislation. Democrats are strongly opposed to the GOP rewrite, so the Republicans must find agreement among themselves to have any hope of passage. The Senate bill would fully repeal the state and local deduction claimed by many taxpayers. That

idea that has drawn vigorous opposition from House Republicans in New York and New Jersey and resulted in a compromise in the House version of the bill that would allow property taxes to be deducted up to $10,000. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said the Senate’s total-repeal approach would face tough sledding in his chamber. As for the hard-fought compromise, he said, “I think it’d be difficult not to have it in the final bill.” On the other hand, the House bill would cap the mortgage interest deduction, an idea that led to intense blowback from the real estate lobby, but the Senate tax measure would leave it unchanged. That means homebuyers would continue to be able

to deduct interest payments on loans of up to $1 million as permitted under current law; the House bill would reduce the limit to $500,000. In a change sure to cause a major dispute, the Senate measure includes a one-year delay in lowering the corporate tax rate, which is to be cut from 35 percent to 20 percent. Delaying that reduction would lower the cost of the bill to the Treasury, but the delay is opposed by the White House and some Senate Republicans. “The president would like this to go into effect right away,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday. Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., told reporters late Wednesday that

he had argued against any delay in the tax help for businesses, saying, “That’s nothing but a Washington gimmick. This is about getting the economy going. The sooner we get this in place, the better we are.” The feverish efforts by Republicans in both chambers Thursday were aimed at fulfilling a self-imposed deadline to get legislation out of the House and Senate before Thanksgiving, so that the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas could be devoted to reconciling the two versions. But the Senate already seemed unlikely to meet that deadline because of complex rules governing how it must consider the tax bill. ANDREW TAYLOR AND MARCY GORDON (AP)

The number of foreign workers that President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club received permission to hire temporarily. The housekeepers, waiters and cooks are needed to fill out the club’s staff during its upcoming busy season, with its managers attesting that there aren’t enough Americans qualified, willing and available to do the work. Trump’s hiring of foreign workers at the Palm Beach, Fla., resort was criticized by his opponents during the 2016 campaign after he slammed companies for moving jobs out of the U.S. and others for hiring immigrants in the country illegally. BEIJING President Trump set aside his blistering rhetoric in favor of friendly overtures to China on Thursday, trying to flatter his hosts into establishing a more balanced trade relationship and doing more to blunt North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. Winding down his two days in Beijing, Trump suggested that if the U.S. and China jointly took on the world’s problems, “I believe we can solve almost all of them, and probably all of them.” In the name of furthering that relationship, Trump shelved his campaign complaints about China, at least in public. He focused on exhorting Beijing to help with North Korea, an effort expected to take center stage at a Friday summit in Vietnam. The Chinese rolled out a lavish welcome for the Trump. He returned the kindness, heaping praise on China’s Xi Jinping and predicting the two powers would work around differences. On trade, Trump criticized the “very one-sided and unfair” relationship between the U.S. and China. Unlike his past rhetoric, he said he didn’t blame the Chinese for having taken advantage of the U.S. in the past. Trump said China “must immediately address the unfair trade practices” that drive a “shockingly” large trade deficit. He also wants China to address forced technology transfers, intellectual property theft and barriers to market access. JILL COLVIN AND JONATHAN LEMIRE (AP)

Defensive slugfest

REDSKINS VS. VIKINGS | 1 P.M. SUNDAY, FOX

Draftnik’s dig didn’t stop Brown

At 4-4, the Redskins desperately need a home win over the NFC North-leading Vikings (6-2) to stay in the wildcard race. Keeping the score low like last week could be the path to victory. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Home run would help

Formerly criticized as ‘allergic to contact,’ Redskins linebacker leads the NFL in tackles NFL Back in 2012, when Zach Brown was 22 years old and interviewing for his dream job as an NFL linebacker, his pre-draft stock was dinged from afar. Mike Mayock, the respected NFL Network analyst, said Brown was “allergic to contact,” a damaging critique when you’re tasked with blowing up running backs and dragging down tight ends for a living. Five years later, Brown is leading the NFL in tackles a year after making his first Pro Bowl. He might be the most valuable, reliable cog of the Redskins’ defense. And in the Washington locker room, that pre-draft analysis hasn’t aged particularly well. “Allergic? What? Come on, man,” Josh Norman said. “I hope nobody believed that junk.” They certainly don’t now. Through eight games, Brown,

28, appears to be everywhere — often on a single play. In Sunday’s win over the Seahawks, Redskins coaches counted 14 tackles, 12 solo including a sack — plus three QB pressures and two QB hits. The key is his speed. He can move sideline to sideline. He can spot a tailback a few steps and still catch him. He can track down scrambling quarterbacks and tight ends. “I feel like if you’re 20 or 30 yards in front of me, and you got 40 yards to go, I feel like I can catch you,” he said. “No matter who it is. Maybe there’s certain guys I can’t catch, but nine times out of 10, I think I can get them.” He’s physical enough to help up front and quick enough to assist in coverage. And even if he makes a bad read or he finds himself out of position, Brown corrects himself so quickly that

Zach Brown won state track titles at Wilde Lake High in Maryland before playing at UNC and being drafted by the Titans in the second round in 2012.

Brown sits out practice LInebacker Zach Brown wasn’t on the Redskins’ injury report on Wednesday, but the team kept him out of practice Thursday when soreness surfaced in his ankle. he still finds himself in the middle of most plays. It goes back to his days running track at Wilde Lake High in Columbia, Md., where he won state titles in the 100 and 200 meters. Despite his large frame — he’s listed at 6 feet 1 and 251 pounds — he was just

a sophomore when he set North Carolina’s school record in the indoor 60-meter dash (6.72 seconds). At the NFL Combine in 2012, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.50 seconds, a time that a running back, receiver or defensive back wouldn’t be ashamed of. Despite Mayock’s early concerns, the Titans made Brown a second-round pick. Brown said the analyst’s critique echoed — at least in his head — for several years, and he often felt he had something to prove. “It stuck a little bit. To this day, if I ever see the guy — you know, thinking about that now, people say these nice things. But I’m the same player I was. That’s why I play defense: to hit.”

Josh Doctson (17.2 yards per catch) dived for a 38-yard grab that set up the go-ahead TD in Seattle. A deep strike to him could make the difference again Sunday.

2 Pressure for Keenum? QB Case Keenum has won four straight games. Newly activated Teddy Bridgewater is his backup for now, but his presence and starting history should put Keenum on alert.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL While growing up in Baltimore, Darryl Morsell heard all about fellow area native Juan Dixon and his leadership for Maryland’s national championship team in 2002. But Morsell, a freshman for the Terps who was a four-star recruit at Mount Saint Joseph High, patterned his game after a guard who found more success in the NBA: Cleveland’s Dwyane Wade. “I felt we had similar body types and ability,” said Morsell, who’s listed at 6 feet 4 just like Wade. “I try to study his game; I still do to this day.” Fellow freshman Bruno Fernando — a 6-foot-10 forward — grew up much farther away from College Park, leading Angola to the FIBA Afrobasket U-18 title and participating in the 2016 Rio Olympics qualifying tournament. During the recruiting process, Morsell and Fernando became fast friends. The two took their official visits to Maryland around the same time and have built on that connection. Both are expected to play key minutes this year for the Terps, who open the season Friday at Stony Brook. “Darryl is my guy. My relationship with him just keeps growing

bigger and bigger every single day,” said Fernando, who spent two years at Montverde Academy in Florida before playing at IMG Academy. “We went to the Capital Classic together and I told him I was going to Maryland. We have become closer and closer before we got on campus.” Morsell has shown why fans might grow close to him, too, scoring 14 points along with a 360-degree dunk in an 88-44 exhibition win over RandolphMacon last week. “Darryl is a big-time athlete, and one thing he wanted to do was play on a team where he can get to the rim,” coach Mark Turgeon

said. “We space the floor and have shooters around him, so it allows him to do that. He’s learning multiple positions, which is hard as a new player. Darryl has come a long way very quickly.” Fernando’s progress has been stalled by an ankle injury, which kept him out against RandolphMacon and forced him to miss more than two weeks of practice. But Turgeon said Thursday that the four-star forward will make his debut Friday and may start. “He does have a big upside,” Turgeon told The Washington Post. “He does some things nobody else can do on our team.” DAVID DRIVER (FOR EXPRESS)

Trash talker backs it up Oklahoma QB Mayfield slings TDs and insults for playoff contender

Injured trio could be back this weekend

RICHARD W. RODRIGUEZ (GETTY IMAGES)

COLLEGE FOOTBALL The most difficult question Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops faced after Saturday’s electric 62-52 win over Oklahoma State wasn’t about his own maligned unit. It was about Baker Mayfield. The senior had just passed for a school-record 598 yards to go with five touchdowns, emerging as the front-runner in the Heisman race. And Mayfield has Oklahoma primed for a potential run to the College Football Playoff. To stay in the race, the fifth-ranked Sooners (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) will have to beat sixth-ranked TCU (8-1, 5-1) on Saturday night (8, Fox), then possibly do it again in a potential Big 12 title game rematch. The question, then, was raised to Stoops: Is Mayfield in the conversation as the best quarterback in Sooners history? Stoops, who has coached in Norman since 1999, didn’t mention Josh Heupel, who led OU to its last national title in 2001, or Jason White, who won the Heisman in 2003. Nor did he mention former No. 1 NFL draft pick Sam Bradford or Landry Jones, Oklahoma’s career leader with 16,646 passing yards and 123 touchdown passes. Instead, Stoops brought up a quarterback who didn’t play for Oklahoma at all: Johnny Manziel. “Just with his charisma, what

Heisman front-runner Baker Mayfield trolls Texas by sporting the Golden Hat Trophy after beating the Longhorns.

his leadership is, it’s just he’s one of a kind,” Stoops said of Mayfield Like the 2012 Heisman winner from Texas A&M, Mayfield scrambles with abandon. Also like Manziel, who flamed out of the NFL after two seasons with the Browns, Mayfield invited scrutiny for an alcohol-related incident; he pleaded guilty in June to public intoxication, disorderly conduct and fleeing from police during a February arrest in Arkansas. Mayfield’s brash demeanor is closer to Manziel than the straitlaced personalities of Heupel, White, Bradford and Jones.

Mayfield ranks first in FBS in completion percentage (71.7), pass efficiency rating (201.6), passing yards per attempt (11.9), passing yards per completion (16.5) and pass plays of 20 yards or more (55). He also leads the country in teams trolled. After a 31-16 win at Ohio State, he planted an Oklahoma flag at midfield in Columbus. Before a 49-41 win over Baylor, he told Bears players: “You forgot who Daddy is. I’m going to have to spank you today.” After a 29-24 win over Texas, Mayfield left the

Cotton Bowl while wearing the game’s trophy, the Golden Hat. In nine games this season, Mayfield has 3,226 passing yards with 28 TDs and five interceptions. At this rate, he appears a safe bet to be the first player with three finishes among the top four Heisman vote-getters since Georgia’s Herschel Walker (1980-82). “The Heisman won’t come if we don’t win Saturday, if we don’t win the next week after that, the next week after that,” Mayfield said. “So I could care less unless we win Saturday.” ROMAN STUBBS

The “Catholics vs. Convicts” reboot has major playoff stakes. Notre Dame has a plus-12 turnover margin, so Hurricanes QB Malik Rosier, left, needs to be cautious a week after tossing three picks vs. Virginia Tech.

Despite having two loses, Auburn could still earn a playoff spot with wins Saturday and Nov. 25 over No. 2 Alabama. Junior RB Kerryon Johnson (15 rushing TDs) faces Georgia’s fifth-ranked run defense.

CAPITALS The ice was more crowded at Capitals practice Thursday with 25 players skating. Coach Barry Trotz has said that three of Washington’s four hurt players have been inching closer to returning, and this marked the first time defenseman Matt Niskanen, winger Brett Connolly and center Tyler Graovac skated with the team since their injuries. Niskanen wore a non-contact jersey, seemingly a bit behind Connolly and Graovac, who weren’t limited. It’s unlikely any of them will play Friday at home against Pittsburgh (7, NBCSWA), but the Capitals could start to get those players back in the lineup Sunday against Edmonton. “They’re very close,” Trotz said. “I’m going to talk to them. I’m going to look at the opposition’s lineup a little bit.” Connolly, above, will likely be the first to return. After suffering his first career concussion two weeks ago against Vancouver, he said he’s been cleared to play. In 10 games this season, he has just one goal and one assist. Niskanen (left hand injury) has missed 11 games and is eligible to come off long-term injured reserve. While he said Thursday that his conditioning wasn’t an issue, he’s lost some timing in the month he’s been out. Graovac has missed the past nine games with an upper-body injury. Winger Andre Burakovsky (broken thumb) is expected to return sometime in December. ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN (TWP)

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Chugging along: ‘Murder’ doesn’t kill, but it’s still fun I saw “Murder on the Orient Express” with a friend I’ve known for 25 years. Over the years, we have seen countless movies together; honestly, I’m pretty sure we’ve seen “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” upward of a dozen times (we had a lot of sleepovers, OK?). As the lights came down for my second movie of the day and my fourth in three days, my friend leaned over and asked, “Do you still enjoy movies?” I’m not sure I’ve heard that question before. I’ve gotten “What should I see this weekend?” and “Is [insert movie] any good?” and “What’s your favorite movie?” plenty of times. But do I still enjoy them? That took me by surprise. What

surprised me more was how fast I answered, “Oh, yeah,” and how much I meant it. Even a movie like “Murder on the Orient Express.” Look, “Murder” is not terrible. At times, it is even good. It’s based on the Agatha Christie novel, and the plot is simple: A bunch of attractive, well-dressed people are on a fancy train. One of them is murdered. Whodunit? Kenneth Branagh stars as a mustache named Hercule Poirot; aside from mustaching, Poirot also solves crimes. As the director, Branagh has his work cut out for him, as “solving crimes” usually involves talking to people and thinking, both of which are hard to portray in an interesting manner over nearly two hours. He tries his best and

shows himself again to be a capable director, with a deft touch for comedy and a clunky one for drama. Of course, Branagh’s signature style is most evident when he also stars (most notably in “Henry V,” “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Hamlet”); if there’s one thing Branagh likes to shoot, it’s Branagh. Here he is the center of not only the movie, but quite possibly every frame in which he appears; he is effortless elegance and snappy wit and intelligence-fired blue eyes. (And he really does have nice blue eyes.) Branagh also has an adroit fondness for the showy; one wonderful long take travels down the outside of the train, peering in through the windows as Poirot and his

roustabout friend walk from car to car, passing each of the 683 cast members. That cast size is a problem (though that’s Christie’s fault, not Branagh’s). The film’s a showcase for some of the most talented actors working today — it’s probably one of the few movies where you think, “Oh, Willem Dafoe is in this too?” — but unfortunately, they don’t get much to do except dress impeccably, claim they didn’t do it and look just suspicious enough to make us think that they did. But you know what? I still had a good time (and now I have plans to watch Sidney Lumet’s 1974 version). I wasn’t bored; the camp that imbued the film was all in good fun. It was pretty to look at and I laughed more than I expected. So, yeah, I still enjoy movies. The smell of the popcorn, the dimming of the lights and that infernal Coke commercial still signal to me the possibility of something really special. Even when, as in the case of “Murder on the Orient Express,” the movie is just fair, I can still have a good time. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

The “Daddy’s Home” sequel continues to skate on the dad personas of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, but this time adds their characters’ own fathers — played by Jon Lithgow and Mel Gibson — to the mix. With even more dads around, however, all the zany antics become frantic. There are moments when it’s deliriously delightful, and others where it misses the mark, lacking the consistency of the first film. KATIE WALSH (TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE VIA AP)

Louis C.K. accused of sexual misconduct Several women have come forward in a New York Times story

REPORTS Five women have come forward to accuse comedian Louis C.K. of sexual misconduct, including masturbating in front of them, The New York Times reported on Thursday. The story, which includes four on-the-record accusations regarding incidents dating back to more than a decade ago, comes a month after The Times’ and The New Yorker’s reports about movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, which sent shock waves around Hollywood. Soon, others began to come forward with stories, ranging from unwanted advances to assault, against big-name executives and entertainers. Chicago comedy duo Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov told The Times that they wanted to celebrate their performance at a 2002 comedy festival in Aspen, Colo., and C.K. — whom they both admired and who seemed collegial — invited them to his hotel room for drinks. The women said that when they got into the room, he asked to take out his penis, and although they thought it was a joke, he did and then masturbated in front of them. Comic and actress Abby

Louis C.K. is the latest Hollywood notable accused of sexual misconduct.

Schachner told The Times that a year later, she called C.K. to invite him to one of her shows, and that he masturbated while on the call with her. Comic Rebecca Corry also told the newspaper that C.K. asked, while they were on the set of a TV pilot together, if he could masturbate in front of her. The Times also reported a fifth accusation from an unnamed woman. A representative for the comic did not immediately return a request for comment. “Louis is not going to answer any questions,” his publicist, Lewis Kay, told The Times via email Tuesday. In anticipation of The Times’ report, the New York premiere

T hursday of C .K .’s latest film, “I Love You Daddy,” was abruptly cancelled. C.K.’s scheduled appearance Thursday on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” was also called off. Unsubstantiated rumors about behavior similar to that reported by The Times have circulated online for years. When asked by Vulture last year about a 2015 Gawker blind item, C.K. said, “That’s nothing to me. That’s not real.” In September, he also told The Times that “they’re rumors, that’s all that is.” “If you actually participate in a rumor, you make it bigger and you make it real,” he said. attempt to rent a truck while invoking Osama bin Laden and, later, the acquisition of newfangled devices called cellphones. Thankfully, director Richard Linklater — along with co-writer Darryl Ponicsan, who wrote the 2005 book on which the film is based — mellows out the piece’s inherent staginess, infusing a mournful but observantly funny story with his distinctive unobtrusive, slightly ruminative style. Of course, “Last Flag Flying” lives or dies by the chemistry generated by its stars. Here, three fine actors play off one another with gentle deference and affection that seems genuine and unforced. Carell isn’t always entirely believable as a Vietnam veteran, but over time,

‘Last Flag Flying’ (R, 124 min.) DIRECTOR: Richard Linklater STARS: Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell, Laurence Fishburne IN A NUTSHELL: Three decades after serving in the Vietnam War, Sal, Mueller and Doc reunite to bury Doc’s son, a Marine killed in Iraq.

his character takes on gravitas that winds up being deeply moving. As the group’s self-appointed moral conscience, Fishburne never makes Mueller a prig, but simply a man of spiritual discipline that’s put to the test every moment that he’s forced to remember events he’s spent

30 years trying to atone for. His biggest challenge in that regard is the hard-drinking, foulmouthed Sal, played by Cranston with the glee of a man who knows the precise worth of the comic relief he’s providing. Together, the ensemble achieves an improbable feat, bringing to life not only the men their characters are during the film’s time period, but also, at times, the very different people they were during the war. Unsurprisingly, “Last Flag Flying” engages with such timeless issues as honor, loyalty, the fecklessness of top brass and the futility of war. For its studiously modest, unassuming tone, “Last Flag Flying” is a movie of enormous humanity and heart. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Josh Groban adds police detective to his TV resume

Netflix announced that Josh Groban will play a straight-laced New York City detective on the streaming platform’s upcoming series “The Good Cop.” The actor-singer will star opposite Tony Danza, who will play Groban’s character’s father. Danza’s role, a disgraced NYPD officer, is the street-wise adviser to his cautious son. A release date for the 10-episode comedy-drama series was not announced. LIONSGATE

FILM REVIEW An ambling, low-key vibe pervades “Last Flag Flying,” which has been billed as a spiritual sequel to Hal Ashby’s 1973 “The Last Detail” and lives up to that promise. As the film opens, the meek, mustached Larry “Doc” Shepherd (Steve Carell) pays a visit to a Norfolk bar run by Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston), quietly nursing his beer until Sal recognizes who it is: The two served in Vietnam together 30 years earlier, when Larry was sent to the brig after an unnamed infraction that they refer to with knowing looks and half-sentences. It turns out that Larry, who has been living in Portsmouth, N.H., is on a mission, for which he wants to enlist Sal and another war buddy, Richard “The Mauler” Mueller (Laurence Fishburne), now a pastor living outside Richmond. “Last Flag Flying,” which takes place in 2003, obliquely revisits the events that put Doc in detention, but the main focus is the Iraq War, one of whose casualties he and his friends are now in charge of seeing to his final resting place. As a picaresque that takes its protagonists from the Virginia Tidewater to New England, “Last Flag Flying” has an episodic structure that feels close to schematic, plunking these middleaged men in the middle of high jinks that include a misbegotten

FILM REVIEW “I wish I could live through something.” So sighs Christine McPherson, the spiky, moody, flawed and delightful protagonist of “Lady Bird.” The movie takes its title from the name Christine has bestowed upon herself during her senior year at a Catholic high school in Sacramento. Everything’s terrible in Lady Bird’s life right now: Her educational prospects (she wants to go east but will likely end up at the local community college); her love life (it’s complicated in the pre-Facebook sense of the term); and especially her mother (Laurie Metcalf), whose daily doses of doubt, anxiety and engulfing unconditional love put Lady Bird in a swivet of head-spinning mixed messages. As a funny, poignant dramatization of a year in the life of a teenager, “Lady Bird” follows the usual coming-of-age arc of missteps, regrets and amusing reckonings. But in the hands of Greta Gerwig, who makes her solo writing and directing debut here, what might have been a by-the-numbers proposition turns out to be fizzily funny and wistfully affecting, a story whose familiar contours nevertheless contain something utterly original and revelatory. “Lady Bird” is a triumph of style, sensibility and spirit. The girl at its center may not be a heavyweight, but her movie is epic. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

SUMMARY: The trailer for this film (based on the true story of the kidnapping of J. Paul Getty’s grandson) is already inaccurate. Director Ridley Scott announced Wednesday that he’ll replace Kevin Spacey, who plays Getty, with Christopher Plummer. The movie has already been shot, so we’re guessing Plummer better learn his lines real darn quick. K.P.K.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
