FAA Eases Ban on Electronics Washington Airline passengers will be able to use their electronic devices gateto-gate to read, work, play games, watch movies and listen to music — but not talk on their cellphones — under much-anticipated guidelines issued Thursday by the Federal Aviation Administration. But passengers shouldn’t expect changes to happen right away, FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said at a news conference. How fast the change is implemented will vary by airline, he said. Airlines will have to show the FAA how their airplanes meet the new guidelines and that they’ve updated their flight-crew training

A Cause for Celebration — and Confusion Fliers are rejoicing that they’ll soon be able to use their iPads, Kindles, music players and other personal electronics during all phases of a flight. But no policy change is without its quirks or hiccups.

Delta says its mainline planes could allow devices Friday. Its smaller regional jets might take until the end of the year to certify. That means some connecting passengers will be able to use electronics on their first flight of the day but not on the second. It could take airlines weeks to update safety videos. Those videos clearly tell passengers to keep their electronics off. There will be an awkward phase where flight attendants will have to make announcements overriding those videos. Cellphones can only be used if they are in airplane mode, meaning they can’t transmit cellular data. This will have to be self-policed. (AP)

Manning: I’ll Go to Court For Hormone Treatment Hagerstown, Md. Imprisoned documents-leaker Chelsea Manning says she’ll go to court, if necessary, to get treatment for gender identity disorder, also called gender dysphoria. The Army private formerly known as Bradley Manning wrote in a letter to the Private Manning Support Network that her courtmartial defense attorney, David Coombs, is helping her seek treatment for the disorder at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, a men’s military prison. The support group posted the letter on its website Wednesday. Manning is serving a 35-year sentence for sending secret military and State Department docu-

ments to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks while working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq. Manning, 25, wrote that she wants to at least be allowed to live as a woman and receive hormone replacement therapy. The military has said it does not provide treatment for gender dysphoria. Pentagon policy says transgender soldiers are not allowed to serve, but Manning can’t be discharged until she’s released from prison and exhausts appeals of her criminal convictions. once a plane’s door closes. They’re not supposed to restart them until the planes reach 10,000 feet and the captain gives the go-ahead. Passengers are supposed to turn their devices off again as the plane descends to land and not restart them until the plane is on the ground.

Under the new guidelines, airlines whose planes are properly protected from electronic interference may allow passengers to use the devices during takeoffs, landings and taxiing, the FAA said. Most new airliners and other planes that have been modified so that passengers can use Wi-Fi at higher altitudes are expected to meet the criteria. But connecting to the Internet to surf, exchange emails, text or download data will still be prohibited below 10,000 feet. Passengers will be told to switch their devices to airplane mode. Toronto Mayor: ‘No Reason to Resign’ Toronto Toronto police said Thursday that they have obtained a video that appears to show Mayor Rob Ford smoking a crack pipe — a video that Ford had claimed didn’t exist and has been at the core of a scandal that has embarrassed and gripped Canada for months. Police Chief Bill Blair said the video, recovered after being deleted from a computer hard drive, did not provide grounds to press charges. Ford, a populist mayor who has repeatedly made headlines for his bizarre behavior, vowed not to resign. Speaking outside his office door,

Backstory Toronto Mayor Rob Ford faced allegations in May that he had been caught on video puffing from a glass crack pipe. Two reporters with the Toronto Star said they saw the video, but it has not been released publicly. Ford maintains he does not smoke crack and that the video does not exist. Ford was elected mayor three years ago. Since then, he has survived an attempt to remove him from office on conflict-of-interest charges and has appeared in the news for his increasingly odd behavior. (AP)

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said Thursday he wouldn’t resign over drug allegations.

Ford said with a smile: “I have no reason to resign.” He said he couldn’t defend himself because the affair is part of a criminal investigation involving an associate, adding: “That’s all I can say right now.”

Toronto police conducted a huge surveillance operation into Ford’s friend and sometimes driver, Alexander Lisi, who is suspected of providing the mayor with drugs.

That’s an increase of 60,000 in September, Eurostat said. “The latest figures put a dent in hopes that the labor market may have reached a turning point,” said analyst Ben May of Capital Economics. Should children have the right to ask for their own deaths? In Belgium, where euthanasia is now legal for people over the age of 18, the government is considering extending it to children. The same bill would offer the right to die to adults with early dementia. Advocates argue that euthanasia, with the consent of their parents, is necessary to give families an option in a desperately painful situation. But opponents have questioned whether children can reasonably decide to end their own lives. Belgium legalized euthanasia for adults in 2002. In the past decade, the number of reported cases per year has risen from 235 deaths in 2003 to 1,432 in 2012. Doctors typically give patients a powerful sedative before injecting another drug to stop their heart. Only a few countries have

legalized euthanasia or anything approaching it. In the Netherlands, euthanasia is legal under specific circumstances and for children over the age of 12 with parental consent. Elsewhere in Europe, euthanasia is only legal in Luxembourg. Assisted suicide, where doctors help a patient to die but do not actively kill them, is allowed in Switzerland. In the U.S., the state of Oregon grants assisted suicide requests for residents aged 18 or over with a terminal illness. Assisted suicide also is allowed in the states of Washington, Vermont and Montana. In Belgium, the ruling Socialist party has proposed the bill expanding the right of euthanasia. The Christian Democratic Flemish party vowed to challenge it in the European Court of Human Rights if it passes. A final decision must be approved by Parliament and could take months. HOMELAND SECURITY

Scoot Over Here I have a major problem with adults who use kick scooters to get around: They’re too darn zippy. Every time I spot one — which is maybe twice a year — I dig into my purse to grab a notebook and pen, only to turn back and see that my potential interview subject is already three blocks away. So when I got a tip about die-hard scooter commuter Tom Geyer, 43, I caught up with him by phone.

His scooter streak started 2½ years ago when Geyer, LivingSocial’s director of experience design, wanted to design a better experience for himself. His epic trek starts at his home in Baltimore’s Federal Hill, takes him to the Camden MARC Station, then on to Union Station and finally to his office near the Washington Convention Center. To save time, he’d taken to running to and from the train, but that left him icky and stinky. He’d debat-

ed buying a folding bike, but the price and hassle turned him off. That’s when Geyer remembered riding a kick scooter on a trip to the San Juan Islands, near Seattle, and thought he’d give it a try here. So, for about $100, he purchased the Razor A5 Lux — a sturdy model designed to support up to 220 pounds on its extra-large urethane wheels. The last detail is key: “I couldn’t do it with little wheels. You’d be

risking your life if there’s a crack in the street.” The scooter is stable, and comes equipped with brakes, so other than the time he tripped himself up while trying to switch leg position midglide, Geyer’s never had to worry about injuries. Or much else. It’s been “perfect,” says Geyer, who brags that he can complete the 1½-mile D.C. leg of his journey in as little as eight minutes. He once attempted to do it in seven, and then wondered why everyone was staring. Turns out, Geyer creates a considerable amount of friction when he’s rushing. “I had scooted so hard that I’d torn the crotch out of my khakis,” he says. Even when properly clothed, Geyer has dealt with plenty of stares. Being a scooter commuter, he says, inspires people driving by to roll down their windows and shout taunts questioning his masculinity. Geyer doesn’t let it bug him, especially now that some of the jokers seem to seriously be considering the scooter switch, too. “I went through this moment where people found it funny, but now naysayers are asking questions,” he says. He can tell them that he is able to keep up with — or even beat — anyone else riding in the bike lanes. He never wastes time parking or locking or docking. (“It’s so easy to flip it up and walk into my building,” he says.) And the scooter’s made him extra popular with kids in his neighborhood, including his 3-year-old daughter, who has a three-wheel scooter she rides around their house. The only reason not to try scooting or scootering or whatever the verb is? You might find me chasing after you with a notebook and a few questions.

All Red Line stations will be open. But trains will leave the ends of the line at Shady Grove and Glenmont about every 16 minutes.

The Green and Yellow lines will have normal weekend service.

Eviction Notice Served To ‘Peace House’ in D.C. The future of the historic anti-nuclear proliferation vigil outside the White House grew tenuous this week, when eviction papers were served Wednesday to the “Peace House” in Northwest Washington that has served as a home base for the vigil’s caretakers. According to the notice dated Oct. 25, the tenants have 30 days to pay a debt of more than $13,500 for several months of unpaid rent, utilities and trash fines. If the residents are unable to pay the total within 30 days, Peace House occupants will be evicted by Dec. 1, the notice said. (THE WASHINGTON POST) RICHMOND

The late-night strategy “gives us the element of surprise,” he said. The Sheriff’s Office came under scrutiny in 2010 and 2011 when county residents learned that deputies failed to serve warrants or arrest suspects who were later

accused of killing others or committing additional crimes. The Sheriff’s Office has reduced the number of outstanding warrants by 21 percent in the past three years. Prince George’s Police Chief Mark Magaw said the county’s focus on closing warrants for suspected violent criminals is one major reason crime has decreased this year. Violent crime is down 15 percent compared with this time last year, and overall crime is down 12 percent. “These numbers are more than just statistics,” Magaw said. “What these numbers mean is so far this year we’ve had 3,000 less victims this year than we did last year.” LYNH BUI (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Washington Monument to Go Dark Artist Sues

NSA, DHS Over Move to Stop Sales

Washington The National Park Service said Thursday that the lights on the Washington Monument will be turned off after this weekend and the scaffolding will start to be removed Nov. 12. The $15 million project to repair the earthquake-damaged structure is 80 percent done, and the monument is on track to reopen by the spring of 2014. Sunday is the last night the lights will be on. It will take three months for all the scaffolding to come down. The monument has been closed to visitors since the 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the East Coast on Aug. 23, 2011, cracking many parts of the 555-foot-tall structure. MICHAEL E. You can’t cross the street in D.C. without bumping into a neighborhood described as “on the rise.” Petworth! Bloomingdale! NoMa! Navy Yard! So what makes Shaw different? Start with the buildings. Many of the new projects — Shaw Main Streets counts more than 20 in the works — occupy existing real estate, some that’s been vacant or underutilized since the 1960s. “There was a community, but [the neighborhood] was empty,” says Derek Brown, the proprietor of three new restaurants on Seventh Street NW. “It was all boarded up; there weren’t a lot of places to go. Three Questions With …

Redskins Ready to Roll Upcoming favorable stretch could decide their playoff destiny

NFL Power Rankings The Associated Press’ NFL Power Rankings, as voted by a 12-member panel, with first-place votes in parentheses.

1. What’s it like being a backup after years of starting? “My job is to be a big support to Robert and to make sure that I’m prepared so that if my number gets called, there isn’t a decrease in performance from Robert to me. I’ve gotta stay ready and stay prepared and hopefully can use those opportunities to develop myself as a quarterback.” DUSTIN BRADFORD (GETTY IMAGES)

Redskins At the midpoint of the season, the Washington Redskins find themselves in a familiar position: in dire need of an extended winning streak to get them back into the playoff picture. The failure of the NFC East as a whole this season means the situation isn’t as daunting as it was last year, when Washington needed seven straight wins to steal the division. But it’s going to take a string of victories to get to a 8-8 or 7-9 record. Sunday’s home contest with San Diego kicks off a stretch during which the Redskins (2-5) can make a move. After the Chargers, three of the following four games are against teams with a losing record — the Vikings, the Eagles and the Giants. “I don’t think you’ve got to be a math major to figure it out — the Giants [have] six losses, Philly’s got five, we’ve got five, Dallas has got four,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “We’ve got a bunch of games left. Whoever finishes the season has a chance to take the NFC East.” The nagging question, however, remains: Are the Redskins consistent enough on either side of the ball to gain traction? Washington’s offense has labored to find

a rhythm despite a top 10 ranking in both rushing and passing yards per game. “At the end of the day, you have to find a way to come out on top,” fullback Darrel Young said. “That’s what we did last year. Finishing is the emphasis we need to have on the rest of the season.” On defense, Washington has played better, but with Philip Rivers, Adrian Peterson and the fast-paced Philly offense on the horizon, the Redskins have to avoid the ups and downs that have plagued them this season. “We’re growing as a secondT1. ary as a whole and as a defense as a whole,” corner E.J. Biggers said. But the fact remains: The Redskins have painted themselves into a corner, and incremental adjustments aren’t going to be enough. Still, Washington’s players aren’t looking ahead to this stretch as a season-defining one. “It’s really just one week at a time,” running back Roy Helu said. “If you overlook anything, you might end up with a loss. You just lose focus, in most things and in any type of job, if you are looking at a bulk of things instead of one piece at a time.”

2. How do you handle coming in cold to a game? “You expect it, in a sense, because that’s what your job is, so it doesn’t catch you off guard. I’ve found that every time I’ve gone in, the other 10 guys in the huddle have done a great job of helping me and elevating my game.” 3. What’s up with Michigan State’s offense? “They’ve kinda been up and down. Early in the year, they looked pretty anemic and last week they looked awfully good. CAN’T LOSE WEIGHT?

3 THINGS TO WATCH

1. A new Rivers Despite a below-average receiving corps, Philip Rivers is putting together his best season in years. The Chargers quarterback is second in the NFL in passer rating, behind only Peyton Manning. The big change has been Rivers’ reduction in interceptions. He threw 35 interceptions the previous two seasons, but this year he has thrown just five picks. He also has three 400-yard games this season.

2. Will play-calling change?

3. Turn for the worse

Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan took a lot of criticism for abandoning the run at the end of last week’s game. Alfred Morris had just two fourth-quarter rushes in the Redskins’ loss to the Broncos. Morris’ lack of touches has been a topic of debate for much of the season. He ranks No. 1 in yards per rush among running backs, yet is tied for 16th in the league in rushing attempts.

After posting a plus-17 in turnover margin in 2012, the Redskins have become rather careless with the ball. They already have more giveaways in seven games this year (15) than they had all of last season. The turnover problems peaked in the fourth quarter against the Broncos: The Redskins threw an interception on each of their last four drives, while also having a fourth-quarter fumble.

41.5

KEY MATCHUP

Chargers RB Danny Woodhead vs. Redskins LB London Fletcher Woodhead is second on the team in carries, but he has been a real threat in the passing attack. He’s had at least four catches in each of the past six games. The Redskins’ defense has struggled to pick up running backs out of the backfield. Twice this season, opposing running backs have led their team in receiving yards when they faced Washington, including last week when the Broncos’ Knowshon Moreno had six catches for 89 yards.

Yards per punt average for the Redskins’ Sav Rocca, the worst in the NFL. Not only does he have the shortest punts, but he also has allowed an NFL-high 20.7 yards per return — although, some of that falls on the coverage team, too.

“It’s a non-issue. I didn’t notice it today. I know he’s still probably a little bit sore. He didn’t share any of those thoughts with me today.

Last week, the Redskins’ defense looked good — at least for three quarters. They’ll pressure the Chargers’ receivers and force Philip Rivers into a key mistake.

A Blueprint for Boston?

Around the NFL: Week 9

Roster moves keyed the Red Sox’s run to the World Series title

GETTY IMAGES PHOTOS

WEEKLY SUPERLATIVES

The Boston Red Sox didn’t just build a World Series champion in 2013. They also created a blueprint to make a run at the team’s next title. The Red Sox took advantage of last August’s salary purge to add middle-market free agents like Mike Napoli, Jonny Gomes, Shane Victorino and Koji Uehara — all key contributors to the World Series championship. As he looks to this offseason, general manager Ben Cherington will need to replace some big parts of this year’s team — including center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury — without making the free agent mistakes of the past. “To be in this position, given where we’ve come from, reflecting back a year ago at this time, there’s been a lot that’s happened in 13 months,” manager John Farrell said after the Series-clinching Game 6 on Wednesday. “Ben Cherington

deserves all the credit in the world for what he has done for this roster.” The Red Sox were still smarting from their 2011 collapse when they traded Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and more than $250 million in future salaries to the Los Angeles Dodgers last August. Although the team finished in last place in 2012, with the franchise’s worst record in almost half a century, the rebuilding had already begun. Instead of showering money on

the biggest names to replace the high-priced talent that had departed, Cherington opted to take smaller risks on mid-range players. “I’m a believer,” Gomes said, adding that he knew the team had potential when he first reported to spring training. “As soon as we went to Fort Myers, [I knew] the movie’s already been written, all we had to do was press play. And this is what happened.” Now it’s time to work on the sequel. JIMMY GOLEN (AP)

Caps Letting Up After Scoring Capitals One of the unsettling trends plaguing the Capitals through the first month of the season is how suddenly they are surrendering goals after scoring themselves. Washington has allowed eight goals this season within 2:30 after scoring one of its own, including four that have allowed the opposition to tie the game. Three of the eight have come in less than 60 seconds. “It’s happened a couple times,” defenseman Steve Oleksy said. “We have to find a way to stay on the gas pedal.” It happened four times during

Ovechkin Out Alex Ovechkin will miss Friday’s game against the Flyers with an upper-body injury suffered during the first period of Monday’s 3-2 loss to the Canucks. The 28-year-old hasn’t missed any action since Feb. 22, 2012. In 21 games without Ovechkin throughout his career, Washington is 11-8-2. Coach Adam Oates did not rule out Ovechkin for Saturday’s game against the Panthers.

the Capitals’ recent four-game trip through Western Canada. In their most recent loss, a 3-2 setback against the Canucks on

Monday, their 2-1 third-period lead turned into a one-goal deficit in just 3:09. “I think we know how good we can be, and sometimes we relax a little bit,” Oleksy said. “In this league, every team is so good, you can’t take a second off.” The Capitals are cognizant of those quick-response goals and how they can instantly swing momentum in the other direction. “Maybe we get a little too complacent,” defenseman Mike Green said. “We’ll have to address this, but it’s not a big concern; it just kind of takes the wind out of our sail. Momentum is everything in this game.” ADAM VINGAN (FOR EXPRESS)

Most likely game to abandon the pass: Eagles vs. Raiders Both have a top five rushing attack. The Eagles feature the NFL-leading rusher in LeSean McCoy, while the Raiders have the speedy combo of Terrelle Pryor and Darren McFadden.

Least favorable matchup: Bucs The winless Bucs get to face the NFC Westleading Seahawks in Seattle, where Russell Wilson is 11-0 in his career. Maybe Tampa Bay can get that illusive win next week against the Dolphins.

Most underrated team: Panthers Carolina is second in the NFL in points allowed, and Cam Newton has six TDs and no picks during the Panthers’ threegame win streak. But they still have to prove they can beat a team with a winning record.

GAME OF THE WEEK

UPSET SPECIAL

Bears at Packers

Bills over Chiefs

MONDAY, 8:40 P.M., ESPN

SUNDAY, 1 P.M.

This is also the only game this week that pits two teams with winning records. And the story about this matchup will be as much about who isn’t on the field as who is. The Packers may be without three of their top four receivers, and Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is out with a groin injury. Which team will be able to get over its injuries and take control of the NFC North?

The Chiefs have found a way to win every week this season, but their streak will end this week in Buffalo. Kansas City has looked vulnerable the past two weeks, when it beat the Browns and the Texans at home by a combined seven points. Last week, Jason Campbell almost led Cleveland to victory. A healthy Bills backfield would help. Thad Lewis, Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller are all questionable.

SCHEDULE Sunday Minnesota at Dallas, 1 p.m. Tennessee at St. Louis, 1 p.m. Atlanta at Carolina, 1 p.m. New Orleans at N.Y. Jets, 1 p.m.

BOLD PREDICTION

Neither Ben Roethlisberger nor Tom Brady will throw a TD pass. The two quarterbacks have won a combined five Super Bowls, but they’re having down seasons after losing some of their more reliable receivers in the offseason. When the two passers face off Sunday, they’ll also be facing a top five passing defense. New England allows 215.5 passing yards a game, while Pittsburgh allows just 181 yards.

Williams, Rizzo Reunited With Nats

Washington GM saw potential in manager years ago in Arizona

More than a decade ago, when Matt Williams was still a third baseman and Mike Rizzo was still climbing the front-office rungs, the future general manager thought he noticed the makings of a future skipper. Well, here they are. Williams will make his debut as a major league manager with the Washington Nationals, a hiring announced by Rizzo on Thursday, one day after the World Series ended. “Matt played with intensity as a player, but he also was a terrific teammate,” Rizzo said. “You talk to the guys that he played with, and they swear by him. He was always team first, and self second. He was the consummate team player and a great teammate. He was a leader in the clubhouse, by example and also a vocal leader. “As a manager candidate, I feel he has the same fire, same desire, and the same team-first attitude that will be taken well by the players,” Rizzo added. “He’s always

been a players’ guy as a player, and I think he’ll continue to be a players’ guy as a manager.” Rizzo was a part of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ front office when the expansion team entered the majors in 1998, and he became their scouting director two years later along the way to becoming Washington’s GM. Williams played in Arizona from 1998 to 2003, part

of a 17-year career that also included time with the San Francisco Giants and the Cleveland Indians. Williams, a five-time All-Star and a four-time Gold Glove recipient, is the first player mentioned in the Mitchell Report — the accounting of baseball’s Steroids Era that was released in December 2007 — to become a manager in the majors. The San Francisco Chronicle report-

ed in 2007 that records indicated Williams purchased more than $10,000 worth of growth hormone, steroids and other drugs while with the Diamondbacks in 2002. According to the newspaper, Williams said in an interview a doctor advised him to try growth hormone to heal a severe ankle injury during spring training that year. “It certainly was something we

He wants to only be judged by his coaching and managing going forward.” The Nationals planned to introduce Williams during a news conference Friday. He replaces the retired Davey Johnson, who won the NL Manager of the Year award for leading Washington to a majors-leading 98 wins and the NL East title in 2012, then announced before this season that 2013 would be it for him in the Nationals’ dugout. After entering the season with high expectations, the Nationals missed the playoffs, going 86-76 and finishing 10 games out of first place in the division. The 47-year-old Williams was the third-base coach for the Diamondbacks the past three seasons. The surprisingly deep ‘Ender’s Game’ pits kids against aliens in a war to end all wars Film Review There’s a moral heft to “Ender’s Game” that lends ballast to the science-fiction adventure about futuristic military-academy cadets. Based on the popular and award-winning 1985 novel by Orson Scott Card, the film doesn’t need added suspense, bigger action or a better dramatic twist; it’s got all of those. But it benefits greatly by actually being about something — the morality of war and its methods — in a way that most movies of this type are not. A sa But ter f ield plays t he 15-year-old Ender Wiggin, a student soldier training to fight the Formics (a race of buglike aliens also known as Buggers), who attacked

Earth 50 years back, killing millions before being driven back to their home planet. Children are good soldiers because they can multitask. Their youth, the film explains, allows these military prodigies to assimilate complex battle information and devise effective attack strategies more quickly than adults. This is thanks to the same wiring that makes them so good at video games. Gaming figures prominently.

‘Ender’s Game’ (PG-13) Director: Gavin Hood Stars: Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld In a Nutshell: Based on the 1985 novel by Orson Scott Card, this story follows Ender Wiggin, who is recruited and trained by the International Military to lead a battle that will decide the future of Earth.

Several scenes feature a high-tech laser tag played in a weightless arena. Others show Ender playing a video game on an iPad-like device he controls with his mind. Central to its narrative is this: Ender is not just a brainiac; he also doesn’t like to lose. In fact, his nickname, explained in the book as originating from a childhood mispronunciation of Andrew, is a convenient description of his combat MO. Ender doesn’t just want to win whatever battle he’s currently fighting; he wants to end all future battles that might come his way. This old — and highly debatable — notion of the war to end all wars is precisely what the film grapples with, with surprising depth. It’s also a rousing action film, especially in Ima x. You may come for the candy coating, but you’ll ruminate on the chewy nougat filling all the way home. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN ( WASHINGTON POST )

Orson Scott Card, the author of “Ender’s Game” and a producer on the film, has been vocal about certain opinions of his, opinions many find objectionable. Consequently, some people are uncomfortable financially supporting the movie. Still, I would never recommend that you, say, buy a ticket to “12 Years a Slave” and sneak into “Ender’s Game.” Because that would be wrong.

video of the final attack, you can see on their faces that a) they’ve seen it a million times and b) they think it is WICKED AWESOME. They’ve been raised in an environment of fear, where the wolf is always howling at the door and where the only defense is a good offense and a good offense is one that wipes your enemy entirely from existence. They’ve grown so accustomed to the idea that their way of life is in danger that they accept, almost without question, actions by their government that are meant to create a safer world. Their world, of moms and dads and exactly two kids (the government limits the size of most families), is the normal one and deserves protection by any means necessary. What’s impressive about the movie is that it so easily could have simply been “Kids Play Really Cool Games in Space.” But it keeps the spirit of the original novel in that it examines how little boys and little girls get turned into soldiers. They watch the videos, they play the games, they go to battle, and no one ever tells them the other guys have moms, too. Read Kristen Page-Kirby’s previous columns at: readexpress.com

A Feast for Kids, Parents ‘Free Birds’ will make children laugh — and maybe give up meat Film Review Finally there’s a movie that vegetarian parents can enjoy with their impressionable offspring. The animated adventure “Free Birds,” out Friday, follows a couple of modern-day turkeys who travel back in time to the first Thanksgiving and try to alter history, thus saving their brethren for generations to come. With help from the vocal gifts of Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler and Owen Wilson, the comedy offers even poultry fans a few pleasures. Reggie (Wilson) is a turkey misfit on his farm. Not only does he look different, he seems to have a modicum of smarts, which his cohabitants lack. The dim-witted birds think the man with the ax is their friend and that Reggie’s farm-totable prognostications are the delusions of a misinformed muckraker. Reggie manages to escape his basted fate thanks to a presidential pardon, but just as he settles in at Camp David, he’s kidnapped by a

turkey who talks like an Army sergeant. Jake (Harrelson) has some crazy tales of his own: A mystical being directed him to kidnap Reggie and go back in time to stop the Pilgrims and Native Americans from feasting on the birds’ fore-

The pair manage to get to the 17th century, where they join a band of wild turkeys and prepare to wage war on the hunters. “Free Birds” has the colorful palette, zippy action and silly story to keep kids giggling, but it also delivers a few worthwhile winks to parents. Will “Free Birds” have kids opting for tofurkey come Nov. 28? Probably not. But in the meantime, it delivers a nice helping of generation-spanning entertainment. The Fresh Princess In ‘Diana,’ the most famous woman in the world is transformed by a hush-hush love Film When it came to his leading lady and the royal subject of his biopic “Diana,” which opens Friday, director Oliver Hirschbiegel had one small problem. “In real life, Naomi [Watts] doesn’t really look like Diana at all,” he says. “But very excellent actors, they have that in them. I don’t know how they do it. They change their features; they become the character from within.” In Watts’ case, she had to become a different Diana, Princess of Wales, from the one we all think we know. The film, based on Kate Snell’s book “Diana: Her Last Love,” traces the final two years of Diana’s life, during which she dated heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews). Never heard of him? That’s

‘Diana’ (PG-13)

Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel Stars: Naveen Andrews, Naomi Watts In a Nutshell: Based on the book “Diana: Her Last Love,” this biopic traces the final two years of the Princess of Wales’ life — including her relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan.

because Khan and Diana managed to keep their relationship largely under wraps, the book and movie allege, through a combination of outright denials and clandestine actions: Diana wore wigs when they went out and smuggled Khan into Kensington Palace in the trunk of her car. (Diana had been separated Hirschbiegel for nearly three years but was not yet divorced from Prince Charles.) The relationship, Hirschbiegel says, was largely what prompted Diana to take a larger role in her charity work, most notably in the push to clear and ban land mines. Through Khan, the German director says, Diana came to understand

“She started standing for something, fighting for something, and having a real purpose in life.”— OLIV ER HIRSCHBIEGEL

that most people don’t spend their days princessing about. “She started standing for something, fighting for something, and having a real purpose in life — aside from being the most famous woman in the world,” Hirschbiegel says. In the film’s smaller moments, Watts portrays Diana as just an ordinary woman out to impress a man. Before Khan comes over for dinner, for instance, Diana gets a friend to do the cooking. When Diana reheats the meal for Khan, she hovers by the microwave to stop it before the beep of the timer can give her away. Eventually, Khan seems to forget that Diana is who she is. “Whenever they are alone, [her position] is out of the way,” Hirschbiegel says. “They just enjoyed each other tremendously. They had a lot of fun with each other. On top of that, they both are what you would call old souls, so that’s another level where they connected. When they are together, all the other things don’t matter anymore.”

Naomi Watts stars in “Diana.”

She Deserved A Better Film Film Review

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

LAURIE SPARHAM PHOTOS (EONE)

Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews) and Princess Diana (Naomi Watts) steal a moment alone in “Diana.”

“Diana,” a new biopic about the last two years of Princess Diana’s life, is not nearly as horrendous as some of the reviews in her homeland may have led you to believe. But it’s not very good. And that’s a shame, in at least three ways. First, the gifted actress Naomi Watts deserves to be in a better movie. Second, Oliver Hirschbiegel, who directed the admired and Oscarnominated German-language film “Downfall,” about Adolf Hitler, somehow falls down here. Finally, and most unfortunately, an opportunity is lost to dig deeper into a personality who fascinated the world like few others in our modern times — “the most famous woman in the world,” as the movie aptly calls her. The film focuses on Diana’s nearly twoyear affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (played by Naveen Andrews). That affair isn’t news. But the film implies that Dodi Fayed, the boyfriend who died with her in that 1997 crash in a Paris traffic tunnel, was merely a minor fling — a fling that was chiefly an effort by Diana to make Khan jealous. The film is slavishly devoted to capturing Diana’s look and style. Watts wears a prosthetic nose and works gamely to capture Diana’s coy expressions and body language. And it must be said that the clothes — carefully re-created — look great. The film starts on that fateful Paris night, at the Ritz Hotel. As Diana, Fayed and a small entourage enter the elevator to leave after dinner, the scene turns eerily into simulated security footage, hinting at the painstaking investigations to come. We all know what happens next. But we don’t see it. The movie may not be great, but for some it will be a fine guilty pleasure. After all: This is Diana we’re talking about. JOCELYN NOVECK (AP)

Mini-City Sproutsin Suburbia Md.’s White Flint area will be home to the latest urban hub outside D.C.

JONATHAN O’CONNELL (CAPITAL BUSINESS)

Development Owners of strip malls, shopping plazas and auto dealerships in the Washington suburbs are tearing their properties apart and trying to create places that have most of what one would find in the span of a few city blocks. They are among the most dramatic suburban redevelopment projects in the country. It’s happening in Tysons Corner, Va., where the company Macerich is building offices, apartments and a hotel around a plaza next to the Tysons Corner Center shopping mall. In Virginia’s Merrifield area, Edens has completed much of the Mosaic District, featuring townhouses, apartments and shops. The pitch for all of the projects is the same: If there are grocery stores, coffee shops, a few restaurants, a gym and a park CONTINUED ON R3

White Flint within steps of your apartment, there’s no need to get in the car and slog through traffic. Sidewalk cafes emulating those in D.C. are pretty much a must-have. Up next is Pike & Rose, a residential and commercial project being built in Maryland’s White Flint area to replace Mid-Pike Plaza on Rockville Pike.

Pike & Rose is shaping up like a carefully branded mini-city for those who want to stay in Montgomery County but want a more urban feel. The developer, Federal Realty Investment Trust, is a $7 billion retail developer headquartered nearby. One of its best-known local projects is Bethesda Row. White Flint is Federal Realty’s opportunity to show it can do urban and it can do mixed-use, combining a shopping district with apartment buildings and an office building as well. Pike & Rose is shaping up like a carefully branded mini-city for white-collar workers who want

to remain in Montgomery County but want a more urban feel. The apartment buildings, named PerSei (174 units) and Palace (318 units), are beginning to take shape and should be complete in the spring. The office building should be done by next fall. Also under construction is the alley being built to connect the project with a future street grid. It has its own name, Muse Alley, as will a future park, Rose Park. Looking at the retail lineup, it’s not hard to see how the developer is trying to mimic some of the success it found at Bethesda Row, signing a string of restaurants including Del Frisco’s Grille, Protein Bar, Roti, Southeast Asian ShopHouse Kitchen and Stella Barra Pizzeria. On top of that, it will have an iPic

Projects like Pike & Rose are happening because of the increased value of land walkable to Metro stations, but that does not mean the walk is a pleasant one. In Tysons Corner, the lucky first Silver Line passengers will walkon foot bridges; the not-so-lucky will be trying to navigatetheir way around super blocks of parking. Pike & Rose will have some of the same concerns when it opens. It’s less than a half-mile from the White Flint Metro station, but Rockville Pike was made for driving, and that will take a long time to change. Traffic can move briskly and the current wait for a walk signal is long. Like the big project in Tysons, the first mini-city in Maryland’s White Flint area will be waiting on the rest of the neighborhood to fill in around it. (CAPITAL BUSINES S)

movie theater, an enormous twostory gym by Sport & Health and a small music venue by the folks from Strathmore. Montgomery County recently approved the second phase of the project, which is much larger than the first. Phase one has three build-

ings totaling 951,000 square feet, while phase two has eight buildings totaling 1.6 million square feet, including a hotel, two more office buildings and two more residential buildings in an area where there is now surface parking and a Toys R Us.

Two-thirds of the retail in the first phase is leased and an additional 20 percent has more tentative commitments, so eventually, Pike & Rose residents will likely be able to get much of what they need around where they live. Federal Realty’s Evan Goldman and Wendy Seher say the second phase will have a mix of restaurants, fashion and home goods. “No matter what we do, we’ll probably blend all three of those,” Goldman said. Development CityCenter DC, the massive mixeduse development that’s already changing the look of downtown D.C., announced this summer that Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House has signed a lease in the complex. Now Washington-area renters can sign leases there, too. Leasing for The Apartments at CityCenter (825 and 875 10th St. NW; 202-888-2380, apartments atcitycenter.com) is underway, and management company Bozzuto hopes the first tenants will be able to move in this December. The 458 airy apartments, with such finishing touches as bam-

boo flooring and LED lights, run from studios, which start at $2,130 a month, up to three bedrooms, which start at $7,590. On-site parking is available for $225 a month. Amenities include an outdoor pool, a dog park and bocce court on the rooftop, and a two-story gym with a yoga studio. Other major perks are the accessibility to downtown and being at the heart of what’s shaping up to be a vibrant CityCenter community. The 10-acre CityCenter development will include apartments, condos, office space, ground-floor restaurants and retail — only Del Frisco’s so far — and a 1.5 acre park. BETH MARLOWE (E XPRES S)

Oscar-winning actors are a pleasure to watch but phone in their parts in the tired ‘Last Vegas’ Film Review As creaky as an arthritic hip, “Last Vegas” — out Friday — does for four leading stars of the ’70s and ’80s what such movies as “Tough Guys” and “Grumpy Old Men” did for survivors of Hollywood’s storied Golden Age: It lets them show they can still throw a punch, bust a move and get it on, and that they’re not quite ready for the Motion Picture Home just yet. Beyond that, this genteel “Hangover” for the AARP crowd has little to recommend it, though a smattering of funny gags and the nostalgia value of the cast keep the whole thing more watchable than it has any right to be. “Last Vegas” scribe Dan Fogelman (who wrote the monumentally smarter and shrewder “Crazy, Stupid, Love”) pretty much sticks to the lowest common denominator as he contrives to get four

childhood friends together in Sin City for the bachelor party of the last unmarried man among them. He’s named Billy and played by a blow-dried, spray-tanned Michael Douglas. When Billy proposes to his strapping 31-year-old girlfriend, best bud Sam (Kevin Kline) suggests a boys’ weekend in Vegas. In addition to Sam, there’s stroke survivor Archie (Morgan Freeman, essentially reprising his “Bucket List” character) and surly widower Paddy (Robert De Niro), who hasn’t forgiven Billy for skipping out on his wife’s funeral (she was their shared childhood sweetheart). Most of the comic payoffs are so obviously telegraphed that the audience can see them coming within a few frames of the setup. Actors like these can sometimes be a pleasure to watch even when

Ginsberg’s Growing Pains ‘Kill Your Darlings’ gives insight into the making of a literary icon — and a murder

As depicted by first-time feature director John Krokidas, who wrote the script with journalistturned-screenwriter Austin Bunn, Carr is a narcissistic master of psychological and emotional manipulation, encouraging Ginsberg, and perhaps Kammerer, to fall in love with him without requital.

The phrase “it’s complicated” appears more than once in “Kill Your Darlings,” opening Friday, but it has nothing to do with Facebook. As first uttered by Daniel Radcliffe — playing a 19-year-old Allen Ginsberg when the poet was still finding his footing at Columbia University and just establishing friendships with the writers who would become known as the Beat Generation — it’s a reference to Ginsberg’s mentally ill mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who was in and out of sanitariums during the poet’s youth. The person that the line is spoken to is Ginsberg’s schoolmate, Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), a dashing ne’er-do-well and fellow aspiring writer who quickly becomes Ginsberg’s crush and tour guide to the literarily and sexually transgressive world of 1940s Manhattan. “I love complicated,” Carr says in reply, with a purr halfway between

seduction and a threat. You’d better like complicated, too. Though based on historical fact, the film is awash in ambiguities. It centers on a killing that we glimpse at the film’s opening: Carr’s 1944 stabbing of David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall of “Dexter”), an

older admirer who had known Carr since childhood. Though Carr never denied the murder — in fact, he turned himself in — it’s not entirely clear if the killing was an act of self-defense against a homosexual stalker, as Carr, who died in 2005, claimed, or something more sinister.

Extraordinary School Pictures Film Review For 13 years, Joe Brewster and Michele Stephenson shot video of their son, Idris Brewster, and his friend Oluwaseun (Seun) Summers. Both kids lived in Brooklyn, the products of middle-class black families, and they found themselves

with a unique opportunity. As kindergartners, both were accepted into the Dalton School, an Ivy League incubator on the Upper East Side whose alumni include Claire Danes and Anderson Cooper. “American Promise” is the result of the hundreds of hours of footage. The documentary is unwieldy, unfocused and frustrating at times, no doubt in part to the relative inexperience of its parents-turned-filmmakers and their nebulous motives for turning their

camera on in the first place. But the movie is also, somehow, dazzling. Dalton seems like a good fit for the boys initially. The two love school and their classmates,

although there are inklings of outsider feelings. When Seun tries to brush his gums until they turn pink, so he can be like the other kids, it’s a harbinger of challenges yet to come. As years go by, the children begin to feel they belong neither at Dalton nor in their neighborhood, where other kids tell Idris that he talks “like a white boy.” To their credit, the filmmak-

Ginsberg grows up before our eyes, pulled into an unfamiliar world both frightening and alluring. But the film isn’t quite a murder mystery. To a much greater degree, it’s the story of Ginsberg’s coming of age, both as a gay man and a writer. Krokidas and Bunn do a great job of portraying a world where literature is both sexy and dangerous. ers lay bare their foibles, as well as their bickering over parenting techniques. They are exceptionally harsh helicopter parents, and they do give some vivid examples of how being an overbearing guardian can backfire. “I was so independent at that age,” Michele laments at one point. “I just wish [Idris] had half the drive I had.” And while the access the filmmakers get is impressive — there’s plenty of footage inside classrooms — the little domestic moments and private conversations mean so much more. “American Promise” may not fully document or explain how race affects education, but it does offer plenty to ponder. Adele (Adele Exarchopoulos), left, experiences a romantic awakening with Emma (Lea Seydoux) in “Blue Is the Warmest Color.”

A Love Too True ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’ is an achingly real exploration of romantic awakening Film Review At f i rst , d i rec tor A bdel lat i f Kechiche’s “Blue Is the Warmest Color” — a portrait of the sexual and romantic awakening of a teenage girl, in theaters Friday — seems like nothing new: Portraying the day-today life of Adele (played by newcomer Adele Exarchopoulos), Kechiche hews early on to the French tradition of dressed-down realism, setting viewers up with a look at Adele’s high school and home life. Then Adele meets Emma (Lea Seydoux), a fresh-faced, blue-haired art student she first glimpses on a crowded street, then pursues into a lesbian night club. The two women fall into a rapturous, physically electric affair, with Adele at first bewildered and finally beguiled by Emma. The high point of this union is the prolonged, intimate sex

scene that this year made “Blue Is the Warmest Color” the talk of Cannes, where it won the festival’s top awards. Debate ensued around whether Kechiche was perpetuating an exploitative heterosexual male gaze or claiming new space for representing gay desire on screen. Loosely based on a graphic novel by Julie Maroh, “Blue Is the Warmest Color” follows Adele over the course of a decade, in which time she settles into domestic housekeeping with Emma, whose bohemian social circle is a quiet and uncomfortable fit. As much press as that sex scene has received, far more eloquent is another protracted sequence in which Adele, who’s knocked herself out cooking for a dinner party, becomes increasingly marginalized among Emma’s far more sophisticated friends.

Exarchopoulos is so convincing as a young woman in the throes of longing, love, lust and devastating rejection that, in the film’s shattering final sequences, filmgoers will sense that they’re not watching a movie as much as witnessing the most private moments of someone’s life, from its headiest highs to its most crushing, depressive lows. Difficult Choices ‘After Tiller’ allows doctors who perform late-term abortions to speak for themselves

‘After Tiller’ (PG-13)

“After Tiller,” an even-tempered portrait of physicians who perform lateterm abortions, exemplifies the crucial role documentaries have come to play in civic discourse, which is so often whipped into partisan fury and emotionalism. The title of “After Tiller” refers to Dr. George Tiller, a provider of late-term abortions who in 2009 was assassinated in Wichita, Kan., by a domestic terrorist. Since then, four of Tiller’s colleagues have taken up similar practices. More often than not, the reasons for a late-term abortion are medical, having to do with fetal abnormalities that would mean a short, painful life for the baby. But “After Tiller” also addresses some much gnarlier ethical questions. Sometimes the answers are unsettling.

Film Review

Dr. Shelley Sella is seen at her clinic in Albuquerque, N.M., in “After Tiller.”

It does viewers the service of providing light where there’s usually only heat. Rather than focus on the highpitched debate around the issue, filmmakers Martha Shane and Lana Wilson bring their cameras into the

clinics themselves, where they intimately record medical professionals and their patients reaching agonizing decisions regarding the health and welfare of their would-be children, their families and themselves. Rather than the exploitative murderers their opponents portray them as, the physicians in “After Tiller” emerge as dedicated people who have come to believe that women, as one doctor puts it, “are the world’s experts in their own lives.” “A f ter Ti l ler” does v iewers the great service of providing light where there’s usually only heat, giving a human face and heart to what previously might have been an abstract issue or quickly scanned news item. Will Mary (Rachel McAdams, with Domhnall Gleeson) become a time-traveler’s wife?

When Love Gets a Do-Over In ‘About Time,’ a man uses time travel to (what else?) woo a girl Film Review As “About Time” opens, its protagonist, Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson), is living at a huge, pink, eclectically appointed seaside manse in Cornwall, England, with his parents (Bill Nighy and Lindsay Duncan) and sister Kit Kat (Lydia Wilson). Desperate for a girlfriend but “too tall, too skinny and too orange” (Gleeson will be familiar to most viewers as Bill Weasley from the “Harry Potter” films), Tim is informed by his father about a long-held family secret: Once they turn 21, the men in the family acquire the ability to travel back in time, a power that comes with its own arcane logic and scientific rules. (“You can’t kill Hitler or shag Helen of Troy,” dad explains dryly.) But Tim can go back to fateful moments in his own life and become more suave, more sexy, more sensitive. His first act, it turns out, is to return to last night’s New Year’s Eve party and do something kind. That gesture introduces viewers to the gentle and unfailingly

compassionate emotional gestalt of “About Time,” which was written and directed by Richard Curtis (“Notting Hill,” “Love Actually”). When Tim — now living in London — meets a fetching American named Mary (Rachel McAdams), the romantic fulcrum of “About Time” ratchets fully into gear, as

‘About Time’ (R) Director: Richard Curtis Stars: Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams In a Nutshell: Blessed with the ability to travel through time, Tim Lake attempts to correct missteps in his life and find romance.

the story turns on whether McAdams will play yet another timetraveler’s wife. Then come some confusing moments, when Tim’s chronological origami folds in on itself a few too many times to be coherent. Curtis also seems stymied by how to end his movie, a structural hazard for a story in which nothing ever really ends. Despite those flaws, “About Time” delivers on its promise of wish-fulfillment, with winsome sincerity. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Old Clothes, New Tricks If you dressed up as Don Draper or a Gatsby heroine for Halloween, you know the appeal of garments from bygone decades. But vintage fashions aren’t just for costumes. When you combine throwback styles (a flapper hat, a disco gown) with contemporary ones, you’ll look both highly individual and modern. “Vintage clothes add style that you won’t find at the mall,” says Shelley White, co-owner of Del Ray’s Amalgamated Classic Clothing and Dry Goods. “Invest in classic pieces — a well-fitted suit, a leather jacket — then pair them with new shoes or jewelry.” Here, White and other local shop staffers demonstrate how to brilliantly blend the past and the present. AMALGAMATED CLASSIC CLOTHING AND DRY GOODS

Shelley White, co-owner | White and partner Gene Elm have been operating this men’s and women’s clothing/accessories store for just 18 months, but they’ve been dealing in vintage for decades. The wellorganized spot on Del Ray’s main drag holds ’20s drop-waist dresses ($150 and up), men’s lace-ups and dramatic coats from the 1940s and 1950s. White rocks a ’60s duster ($125, Amalgamated) with a J.Crew shirt and pants ($78 and $69, J.Crew stores), a vintage bag ($75, Amalgamated) and her own vintage ring and necklace and Chanel shoes. Amalgamated Classic Clothing and Dry Goods, 1904 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria; 703-517-7373, amalgamated-clothing.com.

Cathy Chung, left, and Katerina Herodotou, right, co-owners | Above an unassuming barbershop on 14th Street NW, this vintage trove holds the finds of longtime style hunters Chung and Herodotou, who also run nearby Meeps Vintage Fashionette (2104 18th St. NW; 202-265-6546). In an airy room with exposed brick walls, scope out an everrotating stock of delicate 1920s lingerie, demure velvet cloches and psychedelic ’60s gowns. Chung pairs an ’80s zebra skirt ($75, Treasury) and ’60s oxford heels (her own) with a new macrame necklace and Loup top ($112 and $75, Redeem, 1810 14th St. NW; 202-332-7447); Herodotou wears a new blouse ($68, shopanthom.com) beneath a ’60s leopard dress and vintage suede boots (both her own). style lookout Anne Fox, owner | Blink and you might miss this snug second-story jewelry trove on U Street NW, the packed-with-bling lair of Fox, a longtime vintage dealer and all-around glamorous spirit. Her stock — much of it picked up on her globe-trotting adventures — ranges from 1920s Czech glass flapper necklaces ($80 and up) to 1950s men’s cuff links. Here, she meshes a 1980s necklace from the wardrobe of soap opera “One Life to Live” and vintage bracelets ($350, necklace; bracelets, $150-$190 each, Legendary Beast) with a new dress by Velvet ($165, Proper Topper, 1350 Connecticut Ave. NW; 202-842-3055) and Frye boots ($318, Frye, 1066 Wisconsin Ave. NW; 202-337-3793). BLUE’S HARD GOODS

“Wild-ass jewelry can elevate even a simple outfit, and you won’t look cookie-cutter. Vintage pieces are made better and with more imagination.” — FOX

Tara Papanicolas, partner, left, and Andrew Nguyen, owner | If you have a cool older brother, chances are he’d like Blue’s for its worn-in moto jackets, bad-boy boots, rugged denim and taxidermy-heavy decor. Papanicolas sees to the ladies with a pop-up in the back, Los Gitanos Vintage, where she hawks movie-starry 1930s silk gowns and feathered hats. Here, she wears her own ’50s turban and sequined ’70s top with Givenchy pants and a Vita Fede ring ($1,055 and $175, Hu’s Wear, 2906 M St. NW; 202-342-2020). Nguyen dandies up in a ’50s jacket and vest (his own) with Nudie jeans ($200, Blue’s Hard Goods) and a Band of Outsiders shirt ($325, Lost Boys, 1033 31st St. NW; 202-333-0093). co or a feather hat from Cameroon, know what its significance is. You want to know its story. And if you use clean walls and clean lines to show off these finds, it’s a very modern balance.

FACE TIME

Bryan Mason, Jeanine Hays

What’s the key to shopping for home decor when you are traveling? JH: Bring a curatorial eye with you when you travel. Don’t buy every lamp in the bazaar or bring every kitschy thing back with you. Search for special pieces rather than tchotchkes.

On their blog, AphroChic (aphrochic.com), Philadelphia husband-and-wife design team Bryan Mason and Jeanine Hays chronicle how they blend culturally relevant elements (African textiles, tribal statues) with modern decor. It’s a worldly-yet-approachable look they show off in their new book, “Remix: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul” ($30, Potter Style). They’ll be in town signing it — and presenting vignettes using their own line of textiles — 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Room & Board (1840 14th St. NW).

How has the Internet changed how we decorate? JH: In a lot of ways, it made the world smaller. Globally, we’re all just so much more connected. You can go on Etsy

and buy a beautiful item from Europe. And it’s also opened up the art-collecting world. Do men and women approach design differently? BRYAN MASON: Absolutely! I know for me, before starting the blog with Jeanine, I just needed a room to have four walls and a door. Now that we’ve been doing the blog and our line of pillows [sold via their website], it’s different. I’ll find myself in a hotel lobby brutally criticizing its design!

PATRICK CLINE PHOTOS

Why did you guys start blogging? JEANINE HAYS: In 2007, we had started AphroChic because we didn’t see that many home blogs that had cultural or diverse spaces in them. We wanted to tap into the kind of decor we do, using pieces from our travels and things that show our heritage.

JH: For us, I love beautiful things and Bryan Mason and Jeanine Hays blog about decor at aphrochic.com, and they just wrote a hip book about nesting.

he loves the history. It’s a good combo. How can people incorporate their heritage at home without making it look like a Pier 1 store? JH: One key thing is, if you’re using a cultural piece, like a rug from Moroc-

In the book, each of the homeowners’ spaces you feature has a soundtrack. How can I figure out the music for my space? BM: We just asked our homeowners to give us the top five songs on their iPhones! But I think it’s really about deciding how you like to feel at home. If you’ve got a Caribbean heritage, maybe you want music from there. And you feature a great D.C. home in the book. Why did it appeal to you? JH: It’s two artists, and it’s a very industrial space over near the Navy Yard. Art is central to who they are, so you’ll see their work throughout the space. They also spent a lot of time in New York before moving here, and I think it reflects that. JENNIFER BARGER (EXPRESS)

Better to set your holiday (and everyday) table with something sleek and allseasonal, such as Anthropologie’s “Sea-Flecture” plates (above, $16$24 each, stores and anthropologie .com). Inspired by rolling waves, the designs also grace bowls ($20 each) that would look terrific whether you’re serving gourd soup or not.

M Manolo says, oh, that the worst of tthe Manolo’s problems were that he llooked too much like the high school senior. Indeed, the Manolo has always had the opposite problem, that even when he was in the junior high school, he looked like the little old man.

Perhaps it was not the wisest decision to always wear the three-piece suit and the fedora while others were wearing the blue jeans, puffer vests and puka shells, but, tossed about on the stormy sea of pubescence, the formality of the old man clothing was the life preserver for the young Manolo. While all the other children were trading notes about the crushes and the grudges, the Manolo would hook his walking stick onto his arm, gallantly doff his hat and present his calling card. More than once the Manolo found himself on the receiving end of the noogie, or the wet willie, or the dreaded atomic swirly. Still, despite the rudeness of others, the Manolo believes, then as now, that the old-fashioned etiquettes and social graces are still the best. Here is the Diema from the Calvin Klein ($69, zappos.com), the sophisticated kitten heel that will see you through the transition to adulthood. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll have the chance to reconnect with a friend who has been out of the picture for a while — though not as far away as you might have thought. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’re waiting for someone to ask what you want to do, rather than telling you what to do — but you may not hear it from many. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Something is missing, and you know where to find it, but do you have the time and resources you need to devote to such a search? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You mustn’t let another’s bad behavior affect your own. Good humor is one of your most valuable tools at this time. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) That which is familiar will bring you comfort, but you will be tempted to engage in something new and rather risky.
