Health-Care Site Builders Grilled Washington Contractors who built the Web portal for the Obama administration’s health-insurance marketplace said Thursday that the site’s crippling problems trace back to insufficient testing and changes government officials made just prior to going live. Who’s to blame? The first hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee into what went wrong dug into issues of website architecture and testing protocols — but also re-stoked the partisan battle over President Barack

Republicans Fuel the Flames Republicans who’ve been trying to kill President Barack Obama’s healthcoverage program the past three years expressed outrage Thursday, saying that it is being poorly carried out. “Are they simply incompetent, or were they lying to the American people?” said Rep. Joe Pitts, R-Pa. Democrats shot back that Republicans have no objectivity when it comes to the law. “We have already documented a record of Republicans trying to sabotage the Affordable Care Act,” said ranking Democrat Henry Waxman of California, citing not only the defunding effort in Congress but state-level campaigns to discourage enrollment. Obama’s expansion of health coverage for uninsured Americans. What was clear after four hours of testimony was that the contractors had only partial answers, and only the Obama administration can put the entire picture together to explain the botched rollout. Better times are coming, said

Poll: Online Bullying Incidents Declining More victims of abuse are reaching out to their parents Washington More young people are reaching out to family members after being harassed or taunted online, and it’s helping. At least a little. A poll released Thursday by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and MTV found incidents of “digital abuse” are still prevalent but declining somewhat. It found a growing awareness among teenagers and young adults about harm from online meanness and cyberbullying, as well as a slight increase among those willing to tell a parent or sibling. “I feel like we’re making progress. People should be encouraged,” said Sameer Hinduja, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center and professor at Florida Atlan-

executives from CGI Federal, which built the healthcare.gov website, and from QSSI, which created a component that helps verify applicants’ incomes. They said problems are being fixed daily and expressed optimism that anybody who wants coverage will able to get it by Jan. 1. “The system is working, people

are enrolling,” said CGI vice president Cheryl Campbell. Asked for a timetable, she side-stepped, saying: “I don’t like to raise expectations.” The contractors said they each tested their own components independently but that the Health and Human Services Department was responsible for testing the whole system. That didn’t happen until the last couple of weeks before the system’s Oct. 1 launch. Representing QSSI, Andrew Slavitt told the committee that ideally, end-to-end testing should have occurred well before that, with enough time to correct flaws. How much time? “Months would be nice,” Slav itt said. R ICA R DO A LON S O -Z A L DI VA R A ND STEPHEN OHLEMACHER (AP)

Obama to Congress: Move on Immigration President Barack Obama made a plea for Republican cooperation on immigration Thursday, seeking common ground by year’s end in the aftermath of the divisive partial government shutdown. Yet prospects for success this year remain a long shot even as a handful of House GOP lawmakers push for more limited measures. (AP)

Identifying Bullying The poll by The Associated PressNORC Center for Public Affairs Research and MTV also indicated that young people are becoming more aware of the impact of cyberbullying. Some 72 percent, up from 65 percent in 2011, said online abuse was a problem that society should address. Those who think it should be accepted as a part of life declined from 33 percent to 24 percent. (AP)

Twitter said in a regulatory filing that it is putting forth 70 million shares in the offering. If those are sold, the underwriters can buy an additional 10.5 million shares. Pirates Kidnap Two Americans Captain, engineer of commercial ship taken near Nigeria Washington Pirates kidnapped two Americans working on a commercial ship near the coast of Nigeria, U.S. officials said Thursday. And the Nigerian navy ordered its forces to mount a rescue operation. “We are seeking additional information so we can contribute to the safe resolution of the situation,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said. “Our principal concern now is the safe return of two American citizens.” The captain and an engineer were taken away from an offshore supply vessel during an attack Wednesday in international waters off the Gulf of Guinea, said a U.S. defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The two were kidnapped from the U.S.-f lagged C-Retriever, a 222-foot ship, the official said. The vessel and 11 other members of the crew were released, and the two hostages were believed taken to shore in Nigeria, the official said.

A Rising Threat State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the U.S. has been concerned by “a disturbing increase” in maritime crime, including piracy, in the area. Asked what the U.S. would do about the incident and about the long-term piracy issue in Nigeria, she said, “At this point, we’re still looking into it. … We are concerned by this increase. We’ve worked and will continue to work with states on the Gulf of Guinea to help them respond effectively to maritime crime in these waters.” (AP)

Nigerian navy spokesman Capt. Kabir Aliyu confirmed the attack. He said the Nigerian navy directed its operational commands and bases “to search [for] and rescue the crew members and the vessel.” Aliyu did not respond to a question asking whether the Nigerian navy was working with U.S. Marines who are in the area for training. A spokesman for the U.S. company did not return multiple phone calls and emails seeking comment. It was unclear whether a ransom demand or any other demands had been made. PAULINE JELINEK (AP)

8 States Sign Clean-Car Pledge San Francisco Eight states, including California and New York, pledged Thursday to work together to dramatically multiply the number of zero-emission cars on the nation’s roads by speeding the construction of charging stations and other infrastructure. The goal is to put 3.3 million battery-powered cars, plugin hybrids and other clean-burning vehicles on the roads in those states by 2025. That’s more than 15 times as many zero-emission vehicles projected to be in use in

the entire U.S. by 2015. Auto dealers say networks of charging stations and other conveniences are crucial to winning over drivers who are accustomed to pulling up to the gas pump and fear getting stranded by a dead battery. The other states that signed the pact are Massachusetts, Maryland, Oregon, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont. The eight states together represent about 23 percent of the U.S. auto market. Officials say every automaker will have a zero-emission model by 2015. JASON DEAREN (AP)

EU Leaders Slam NSA at Summit

TRIPOLI, LIBYA

Eastern Libyans Declare Autonomous Government The leaders of a movement for self-rule in oil-rich eastern Libya unilaterally announced Thursday the formation of a shadow government, the latest challenge to the central authority. The announcement came months after the movement, backed by some militias and local tribes, declared the eastern half of Libya to be an autonomous state, claiming self-rule powers and control over resources. Merkel, others lash out, say U.S. must regain Europe’s trust Brussels

European leaders united in anger Thursday as they attended a summit overshadowed by reports of widespread U.S. spying on its allies — allegations German Chancellor Angela Merkel said had shattered trust in the Obama administration and undermined their relationship. The latest revelations that the U.S. National Security Agency swept up more than 70 million

phone records in France and may have tapped Merkel’s own cellphone brought denunciations from the French and German governments. Merkel’s remarks as she arrived at the 28-nation European Union gathering indicated she wasn’t placated by a conversation she had Wednesday with President Barack Obama. “We need trust among allies and partners,” Merkel said. “Such trust now has to be built anew. This is what we have to think about.” The White House may soon face other irked heads of state and government. The British newspaper The Guardian said Thursday it obtained a confidential memo sug-

cials at the White House, Pentagon and other agencies to share their contacts so the spy agency could add foreign leaders’ phone numbers to its surveillance systems, the report said. European Union Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said for many Europeans, eavesdropping on their phone calls or reading their emails is particularly objectionable because it raises the specter of totalitarian regimes of the recent past. “At least in Europe, we consider the right to privacy a fundamental right and it is a very serious matter,” Barroso said. A Roma woman in Bulgaria has undergone DNA testing and faces preliminary charges of child selling as authorities investigate if she is the mother of a young girl found living with an unrelated couple in Greece, authorities said Thursday. Though the tests have yet to prove Sasha Ruseva, 35, is the biological mother of the girl known as “Maria,” the woman’s admission that she once left a baby behind in Greece opened her up to a formal investigation. Ruseva acknowledged to Bulgarian TV that she had been questioned about the girl — but was not sure if Maria was her daughter. The girl, believed to be 5 or 6 years old, was found during a raid in a Roma, or Gypsy, camp in central Greece last week. The child’s case gained global notice and has drawn what human rights advocates say is unfair accusations in general against the Roma community, which has long faced racism and poverty. Ruseva said she wanted the child back if tests prove she is the girl’s mother. But she denied taking

Egypt’s government announced Thursday it once again shortened a nighttime curfew put in place more than two months ago in much of the country over the unrest that followed the ouster of the country’s president. Bulgarian Interior Ministry chief secretary Svetlozar Lazarov said that during Thursday’s questioning by police, Ruseva said she had recognized the Greek Roma couple in the “Maria” case, whose pictures have been broadcast on TV, as the same people with whom she left her child while working in Greece. The couple, ages 39 and 40, have been remanded in custody by Greek authorities on charges of child abduction and document fraud. VESELIN TOSHKOV (AP)

Trick or Transportation If you feel compelled to wear something topical, at least don’t be typical. Here are a few transportationrelated costume ideas that will prove you’re up on current events but won’t make you look like such a jack … -o’-lantern.

Weekend MARC Couples costumes are often barfinducing. This one should cause nausea only in people prone to motion sickness. That’s because

this getup celebrates the expansion of commuter rail service between D.C. and Baltimore that’s set to start Dec. 7. One of you is Mr. Boh (thick handlebar mustache, slickeddown black hair, one eye under a skin-colored patch) while the other is a Ben’s Chili Bowl half-smoke (reddish-brown unitard and face paint, tan coat, pockets stuffed with potato chips). Attach some kiddie model trains to your sleeves, and then hug all night.

BEN CLAASSEN III

How do you know you’re at a Halloween party in D.C.? At least two people are dressed as “Obamacare,” five are caked in orange face paint (a la John Boehner) and there’s a woman who looks just like a national security adviser. Wait, she might not be in a costume.

Ridesharing Getting into a car with a stranger sounds scary, but such services as Lyft and Sidecar — which turn regular drivers into pals willing to give you a ride — are actually pret-

ty awesome. Kind of like Bill Cosby in “Ghost Dad.” (Just forget that in the movie he dies in a car crash.) Lyft makes sure folks can spot their cars by slapping giant pink mustaches on the vehicles’ grills. You can order up a similar one from carstache.com — Ly f t ’s of f icia l carstache purveyor — and simply affix it to whatever else you’re wearing. Worried the $40 model might be a little wide for maneuvering around a crowd? There’s also the $15 bikestache option. To complete the costume, take your sweet time when walking over to people and ask for a donation every time you hand someone a drink.

DC Streetcar Curlers in your hair and slippers on your feet will indicate that you’re not ready yet. But that could work for any number of transportationthemed costumes — the Silver Line, the standardized taxi dome lights (required on all cabs by Nov. 1), the M Street bike lane. To help show that you’re representing the return of D.C.’s beloved streetcars, don a red outfit with a silver stripe down the side. Get some pieces of wire to stick straight up out of your hair. Also, keep explaining that although you’ll go all over the city eventually, you’re only willing to head to H Street for now. Preschoolers clamoring to dress as Metro track workers, engineers or cops can order costumes for $36 each at dcmetrostore.com. Seriously.

Gray Backs Pot Decriminalization D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray on Wednesday of fered his f irst unequivocal support for decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana, adding momentum to a legislative proposal that has the support of a supermajority on the D.C. Council and could make the District one of the nation’s most lenient jurisdictions on marijuana possession.

Public polls in the U.S. show mounting support for legalizing marijuana. A nationwide Gallup poll released this week showed 58 percent of Americans think pot should be legal, up from 50 percent in 2011. It is the first time that a clear majority supported legalization of the drug. This year, 38 percent of Americans admitted to having tried marijuana. (AP/E XPRESS)

Under a measure proposed by D.C. Council member Tommy Wells, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana in the District would no longer be punishable by six months in jail and a penalty of $1,000. Instead, those caught with amounts of the drug deemed for personal use would risk only a

D.C.’s Cab Drivers Set To Join the Teamsters Taxi system overhaul has frustrated many who want more time Washington The District’s cab drivers are teaming up with the Teamsters. Representatives from the Teamsters Union announced Thursday the formation of the D.C. Taxi Drivers Association. The group will be affiliated with Teamsters Local 922. The first meeting of the new group is scheduled for Oct. 29. “For far too long, taxi drivers in Washington, D.C., have not had a strong voice to provide input about regulations and policies that affect their livelihoods,” said Ferline Buie, president of Teamsters Local 922, in a written statement. Union officials said drivers approached the Teamsters with hopes of organizing. “This is about fairness for more than 6,000 drivers and their families, and it’s about improving the taxicab service in our nation’s capital,” said Teamsters General Pres-

ident Jim Hoffa. Passengers have long complained that the city’s taxi fleet is unreliable and lacks some of the modern conveniences of other big city taxi fleets, like the ability to pay with credit cards. In response, District officials passed new rules to overhaul the system and make it more competitive with a bevy of new car services, such as Uber. But the overhaul has left many drivers frustrated and concerned about whether they can afford the new upgrades. Hoffa said drivers do not oppose new regulations, which include requirements that all cabs accept credit cards, install new dome lights and adopt a new red-andgray color scheme for their vehicles. They just want more time to make the changes. How many cab drivers will be part of the association remains to be seen. Teamsters spokeswoman Leigh Strope said more than a thousand have signed up to join and they expect several hundred to attend next week’s meeting. LORI AR ATANI (THE WASHINGTON POST )

civil charge and a ticket of $100 — the equivalent of parking in a noparking area in D.C. at rush hour. Wells, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for mayor, and civil liberties groups have urged passage of the measure. They say the District’s marijuana laws have disproportionately affected African-

Americans and have saddled some residents with criminal records, making it hard for them to find gainful employment. “I support decriminalization,” Gray said. “Legalization is another issue. I’m not there on that issue, yet,” he added, alluding to laws such as those in Colorado and Washington state. This past summer, D.C. Police Ch ief Cat hy La n ier u rged a “robust discussion” of the legislation, saying she has concerns about the risks marijuana poses for children, as well as the potential conf lict with federal law. Millennials in Our Midst

A series of Washington Post articles this week examined the lives of millennials in the “new Washington” — dissecting what they eat, where they live and what’s next for a group often seen as a symbol of a rapidly changing District. The days of referencing the city’s “international” and “political” culture have given way to the buzz, and exhaustive scrutiny, of a younger, hipper D.C. Some see these 20- and 30-somethings as the embodiment of the modern, urban lifestyle and welcome the restaurants, condos and bike lanes that have sprung up to accommodate them. Others see an entitled generation driving up costs and gentrifying neighborhoods with little awareness of the communities, or their culture, that were here long before Le Diplomate. Here’s what we learned from The Post’s coverage. RACHEL SADON AND MARISSA PAYNE (EXPRESS)

No One Knows What to Call Them. Or Their Age.

All The Stuff Moving In Pushed Some Gems Out

“They belong to the ill-defined cohort known variously as millennials, echo boomers or Generation Y. Their ages range from 24 to 34, or perhaps 18 to 36, or even 21 to 30, depending on which firm is polling,” writes Elizabeth Chang in The Post magazine’s essay “March of the millennials,” which opened the floodgates of coverage. Still confused? Take our quiz, at right.

Perhaps one of the most frustrating things that newcomer millennials do is treat native Washingtonians as a rare species. “You actually grew up here?” they ask them incredulously, as though D.C. was a ghost town without community or character before 2000. In the article “Homespun D.C. places lost to condos and burger chains,” Clinton Yates recalls playing arcade games at the Golden Dome, now a service entry to the upscale seafood restaurant D.C. Coast, and hanging out at Georgetown’s 24hour restaurant Au Pied de Cochon, now a Five Guys. Online commenters chimed in with other lost gems: repertory movie house Biograph Theatre (now a CVS), the Bayou nightclub (now the AMC Loews Georgetown) and Scholl’s Cafeteria.

1

That ‘Millennial March’ Is Actually a Real Thing

2

Anecdotes about young people swarming this street or that neighborhood abound, and the numbers back it up. Half of the population growth in D.C. between 2010 and 2012 was from millennials.

3

What They Are Making The median salary for D.C. residents ages 25 to 34 is $44,680, compared to $27,025 for all U.S. metro areas, perhaps unsurprising given the cost of living here. But the parity between women and men is also much higher in D.C. than other U.S. cities. Here, women earn $0.92 to men’s $1, compared to $0.69 nationally. Get ’em, girls.

4

Millennials Are Staying And So Are Their Babies Gone are the days of young couples moving to the suburbs once they’ve had kids, writes Carol Morello in “District dwellers deliver baby boom.” These millennials (and young Gen Xers) increased D.C.’s population of toddlers by almost 20 percent in three years, according to census figures.

6

D.C. Is Cool. Or it Isn’t. Whatever. We Care Not.

Millennials Like Food. Like, Really Like Food.

Millennials have their own definition of hipness. Apparently. And they don’t care if it’s the same as yours. At least that’s Sommer Mathis’ argument in a first-person Style essay. Despite the influx of shiny new things, she writes: “In the District, it’s still ‘cool to say that it’s not cool.’ ” Erm, OK.

Fifty percent of millennials are self-identified “foodies,” we learned in Tim Carman’s Food section story. And their siren songs? Communal tables, retro-looking furniture, small plates, ramen, deafening noise, glutenfree options, celebrity chefs, outdoor seating — and organic everything.

3. When I was in high school, I mostly communicated via: a. Telephone. My baby sitter’s club even had its own line. b. AOL IM, brb mom’s iN mY rOoM >:-/ c. Snapchat. Facebook is for old people. 4. What movie have you quoted since you were a teenager? a. “Clueless.” Anything else? As if … b. “Mean Girls.” So totally fetch. c. “Easy A.” It fakerocked my world. Mostly A’s: You are definitely Generation X. You wore flannel when it was hip the first time. Mostly B’s: You’re the millennial that The Post’s articles are talking about. You love small plates so much. Mostly C’s: You’re whatever’s after millennial. Don’t forget to register to vote soon! And stay in school.

Tigers Not Looking Back Boyd and Clemson try to move past loss as they face the Terps

Georgia Tech at Virginia SAT., 12:30 P.M., FOX

Main storyline: Stopping the skid. The Cavaliers have lost four straight games and are still winless in the ACC. They have one of the worst offenses in the country. Last year they lost 56-20 to Georgia Tech. Player to watch: Cavaliers RB Kevin Parks. The junior, who scored three TDs last week, continues to be the only consistent offensive threat.

College Football Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd isn’t giving up on the season, no matter how bad the ninth-ranked Tigers looked against No. 3 Florida State last week. Boyd and Clemson coach Dabo Swinney watched every play of the Seminoles’ 51-14 beatdown, acknowledging everything from glaring breakdowns to the tiniest errors in footwork. When the session was over, Boyd was ready to get himself and the Tigers’ offense cranked back up for the regular season stretch run, which starts Saturday at Maryland (5-2, 1-2 ACC). “We kind of look at this as the job and you want to go out there and perform,” Boyd said this week. “You’ve got to be accountable for your actions out there. Whether it’s studying more or just performing more, you’ve got to make sure you get it done.” Boyd was atop the college football world — and several Heisman Trophy lists — after the Tigers (6-1. 4-1) outlasted Georgia 38-35 to start the season in August. Since then, it’s been a series of ups and downs for the fifth-year

senior, none of which cost Clemson until last week. Boyd threw two interceptions and his fumble on a sack made for any easy scoop and score by Florida State’s Mario Edwards Jr. for a 17-0 lead in the first quarter. Boyd finished with 156 yards passing, his second-worst showing since he became Clemson’s fulltime starter before the 2011 season. Maryland coach Randy Edsall won’t base his game plan off what he saw against Florida State, understanding how dynamic the Tigers’ offense has been overall. “They do a lot of different things

where you have to be very sharp, alert and cognizant with where they move people around,” Edsall said. “They don’t put all of the receivers in the same place and try to create mismatches. So what you’ve got to do is be very sound and solid.” With five games left to the Tigers’ regular season, Boyd thinks it’s time to narrow the focus on the game ahead and not what’s out there beyond this weekend. “Everybody was looking at the big picture instead of just the moment, just the time,” Boyd said. “We’ve got to focus on the day at hand.” PETE IACOBELLI (AP)

Bruins QB Brett Hundley needs to bounce back from his poor outing vs. Stanford to keep up with Heisman frontrunner Marcus Mariota and Oregon.

Main storyline: Stopping the run. The Mids gave up 321 yards on the ground in last week’s 45-44 doubleovertime loss to Toledo. Now they’ll face Isaac Bennett, who rushed for 240 yards and three TDs last week. Player to watch: Mids K Nick Sloan. When you miss an extra point in overtime, you’re going to garner some attention the following week.

Duke at No. 14 Virginia Tech SAT., 3:30 P.M., ESPNU

Main storyline: Strength vs. strength. Duke has scored 35 points or more in four straight games, but it hasn’t faced a defense like Virginia Tech. Defense’s Glimpse of Hope Redskins may find solace in the Broncos’ stumble last week

NFL Power Rankings The Associated Press’ NFL Power Rankings, as voted by a 12-member panel, with first-place votes in parentheses.

CHRIS THOMPSON REDSKINS ROOKIE RB

1. What’s been the best part of making it to the NFL? “Just being able to play again. I had some injuries in college, and I didn’t think I’d get a chance to play, let alone getting drafted. Every day is a blessing to come here. All I have to do is wake up and play football every day. That alone puts a smile on my face.”

2. How disappointed were you with your struggles as a returner? “I put it on me. When I went back and looked on film, there were times when I would sit and wait for a hole when I should have just hit it and run. I should have got those 10 or 15 yards instead of trying to make the big play every time. As a rookie, you have to learn every yard counts.”

The Washington Redskins players who stayed up late last Sunday night to scout their upcoming opponent, the Denver Broncos, received a pleasant surprise: hope. The high-powered Broncos’ offense led by four-time NFL MVP quarterback Peyton Manning was slowed — though not stopped — in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts, giving Washington’s defense a potential blueprint for success ahead of Sunday’s game in Denver. But can the short-handed Redskins’ defense actually pull off a respectable showing, much less a stunning upset? “[Manning] does present a lot of different challenges to your defense,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “We’ll obviously have a game plan, and hopefully we can do better than a lot of teams have.” On paper, the matchup looks difficult for the Redskins. Manning has completed 71.6 percent of his passes for 2,565 yards and 25 touchdowns. Washington is giving up 8.5 yards per passing attempt, the second-worst figure in the NFL, and will be without suspended safety Brandon Meriweather and perhaps safety Reed Doughty, who suffered a concussion against the Bears. “Ever ybody is going to be stressed,” corner Josh Wilson said. “We have to make plays. It’s time to step up. You have to make plays, and that’s what the Colts were able to do.” Defensive coordinator Jim

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was sacked four times, threw an interception and fumbled last week vs. the Colts.

Haslett knows that trying to beat Manning, one of the league’s trickiest and most cerebral players, at his own game isn’t going to work. Haslett prefers a strategy that follows the Redskins’ basic formula. “Peyton sees everything,” Haslett said. “You think you can disguise something on him, and he recognizes every coverage and

understands what you are doing. You’re not going to go out there and think you’re going to fool him. It’s not going to happen. “So you have to go out there and execute, you have to perform well and you have to do everything that’s right to give yourself a chance to win the game.” If there’s one surefire strategy to slow Manning down, it’s when

Week 8: Redskins vs. Broncos

Broncos LT Chris Clark vs. Redskins LB Brian Orakpo

| Sunday, 4:25 p.m., Fox

Peyton Manning was sacked five times in the Broncos’ first six games, but he went down four times last week. Clark is the seasonlong replacement for Pro Bowl left tackle Ryan Clady, who is out with a Lisfranc injury. Last week against the Colts, Clark was dominated by Robert Mathis, who had two sacks and a forced fumble. Orakpo will have to pressure Manning to get him a little out of rhythm.

THE WASHINGTON POST PHOTOS

THREE THINGS TO WATCH

1. No safety net

2. Ready for a shootout

3. Reed’s encore

The Redskins will be without free safety Brandon Meriweather, who was suspended for a game for helmet-to-helmet hits, and they may not have strong safety Reed Doughty, who suffered a concussion last week. Rookie Bacarri Rambo was the starting safety for Week 1 but has since fallen out of the rotation. Not exactly the kind of secondary concerns you’d want heading into a game vs. Peyton Manning.

Robert Griffin III and the Redskins’ offense are prepared to get into a shootout. Denver is averaging 42.6 points a game — 12.2 points more than any other team. The only time Washington has scored more than 40 points this season was last week against the Bears. Griffin is coming off his most complete game of the season, and the Redskins are facing a porous Denver defense. But even 40 points may not be enough to win.

Jordan Reed has emerged as one of Griffin’s favorite targets. The 6-foot-2, 243-pound rookie tight end is too fast for linebackers to cover and too big for defensive backs. Reed has been targeted six or more times in four of the five games he’s played. His involvement in the offense peaked last week when Reed had nine catches (on nine targets) for 134 yards and a touchdown. How will he follow up that performance?

Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester didn’t allow a run in 7⅔ innings pitched in Game 1 against the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Lester: Rosin on Glove Red Sox pitcher says substance on his mitt was completely legal World Series Jon Lester says there was nothing but rosin — which is perfectly legal — on his glove when he beat the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 of the World Series. A Cardinals minor leaguer posted a screen shot on Twitter showing a green substance on Lester’s glove. Tyler Melling, a 25-year-old pitcher in the Florida State League, wrote: “Jon Lester using a little Vaseline inside the glove tonight?” The Boston Red Sox left-hander said before Game 2 on Thursday night that “I can honestly tell you that all I use is rosin. So, it’s obviously frustrating that after a night like last night, we should be having fun and running around with some energy today and I’ve got to stand here and answer questions about it.”

World Series Game 3 Saturday, 8:07 p.m., Fox

The series heads to St. Louis for the next three games. Veteran right-hander Jake Peavy will take the mound for the Red Sox, and the Cardinals will counter with 25-yearold Joe Kelly. Both pitchers are 0-1 this postseason. (EXPRESS)

Lester allowed five hits in 7 2 ⁄ 3 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and a walk in the Red Sox’s 8-1 win. Boston manager John Farrell also said Lester uses only rosin, which is provided on the pitcher’s mound, to get a better grip. “If you know Jon Lester, he sweats like a pig and he needs rosin,” Farrell said before Game 2. “I don’t see this as anything at all.” Major League Baseball said in a statement Thursday that “we cannot draw any conclusions from this

video. There were no complaints from the Cardinals, and the umpires never detected anything indicating a foreign substance throughout the game.” Section 8.02 of the Official Baseball Rules says a pitcher “shall not apply a foreign substance of any kind to the ball.” The penalty for a violation is ejection and an automatic suspension. Asked if he’s sure that rosin was the only substance in Lester’s glove, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said, “This was not instigated by us. And the way that we approach this is we just play the game. We don’t deny that some things have been acknowledged. And if that’s what he claims, then that’s what it is. That’s all there is to it. And right now it’s pretty much a dead issue.” HOWARD ULMAN (AP)

Best WR battle: Dez vs. Megatron Who would you rather have: Dez Bryant, who has scored 16 TDs in his past 15 games, or Calvin Johnson, who had a 1,964-yard season in 2012. It was a hot topic ahead of the CowboysLions game.

Least like his old self: Tom Brady The Patriots’ receiving corps has struggled, but Tom has been far from terrific. Brady ranks 26th in passer rating (75.3), right behind Mr. Pick Six Matt Schaub and Tampa Bay rookie Mike Glennon.

UPSET SPECIAL

Cowboys at Lions

Raiders over Steelers

SUNDAY, 1 P.M., FOX

SUNDAY, 4:05 P.M.

Two of the league’s top passing attacks face off in a battle of 4-3 teams. The Lions’ Matthew Stafford and the Cowboys’ Tony Romo have been considered second-tier passers for much of their careers because of a lack of postseason success (they have one playoff win between them). But this season they’ve both cut down on mistakes. Could this be their year to take that next step?

The Steelers are on a two-game winning streak, but their offense is still having problems. They rank 27th in rushing, and Ben Roethlisberger has one multi-touchdown game all season. Oakland hasn’t been much better, but it is 2-1 on the year at home and is coming off a bye week healthy. The speed of Terrelle Pryor and Darren McFadden will be too much for the Steelers’ defense to handle.

Worst QB situation: Vikings Josh Freeman completed 37.7 percent of his passes in his Minnesota debut and may miss this week’s game with a concussion. So Christian Ponder and his 65.9 passer rating may get another shot.

Their Old Haunting Grounds Does your rental have you spooked? Don’t be so quick to blame ghosts Roommates Chris, Celina and Naomi thought they had found the perfect place: an inexpensive rowhouse in Alexandria, just outside the Beltway. “We loved it here at first,” Celina says. “It’s the perfect size, and we have a little backyard for the dogs, and a little deck.” But after a series of spooky events, the three longtime friends have decided to break their lease and move out after just five months. “We aren’t the type of people who believe in ghosts, and we hate moving,” Chris says. “I just want to get a good night’s sleep,” Celina says. The trouble started this summer, when Chris found a pan full of water in a cupboard. “It was completely full, to the brim,” he recalls. His roommates were equally mystified, so they conducted some DANIEL FISHEL (FOR EXPRESS)

De-Haunt Your Space

Continued from page R1

Need to rid your rental of spooks? You’ve got many options besides moving out.

experiments: pouring water on the countertop to see if it dribbled through, looking for leaky pipes. “We’re all pretty logical thinkers,” Celina says. “We thought there had to be a rational explanation.” None of their experiments, however, reproduced the odd phenomenon. Then, a week later, it happened again. “We all kind of accused each other at first,” Celina says. “We are all big fans of scary movies.” The three no longer watch scary movies, Naomi says, because their real life got even spookier. The roommates, who commute together to and from work, got home one afternoon to find all of their kitchen cabinets and cupboards wide open.

Psychologists suggest you:

Paranormal experts recommend you:

Move your clock radio. Sleeping next to electronics can excite the brain’s temporal lobe, causing uncanny feelings and experiences. Educate yourself. Read ghost stories – specifically the ones where investigators find mundane explanations for spooky phenomena. Visit a sleep clinic. Sleep disorders can cause people to have terrifying experiences, including hallucinations and the feeling that something evil is present. Call a scientist. If you want to find the roots of your own haunting, reach out to a local university’s psychology department, says psychologist James Houran. They can put you in touch with other experts or suggest rational explanations to explore.

Tell the ghost to go away. “Say in a loud, clear voice that this is your space and you want to be left alone,” says Jeannie Roman, a paranormal investigator based in Dumfries, Va. Burn white sage. The fragrant smoke and ash of burning sage is said to purify a space and drive away negative spirits, Roman says. Sprinkle your apartment with holy water. You can pick up water that’s been blessed by a clergy member at many local churches, or tap into the protective rituals of your belief system, Roman says. Take arguments outside. Negative energy inside your home can feed a nasty spirit, Roman says. S.D.

nextweek Local apartments’ fitness programs are fitting the bill for many busy residents. Learn more in next week’s issue of Ready to Rent.

“We thought, OK, someone is getting into our house,” Chris says. Chris contacted the rental company, and it said it would not rekey their locks but that Chris could do it himself, at his own expense, he says. So he did. Unfortunately, it didn’t stop the spook. These days, the trio has become used to coming home to find all their cabinets ajar, and they try not to get scared when they hear banging in their house at all hours of the night. Still, they have trouble sleeping and are anxious to move out. Experiences like theirs aren’t unusual, says psychologist James Houran, editor of the academic textbook “Hauntings and Poltergeists: Multidisciplinary Perspectives.” “Surveys have consistently shown that, in the general population, about 10 percent of people report having seen a ghost or apparition at some point in their lives,” he says. The visions can almost always be explained as a combination of psychological and physical phe-

About Our Sources Our sources asked us not to use their last names for fear of being sued by their landlord — a plausible scenario, says Joel Cohn, legislative director of the District of Columbia Office of the Tenant Advocate. “It’s possible that renters could be successfully sued for damages if they publicize a haunting, thus making it harder for a property owner to later sell or rent the place,” he says. “But the owner would have to prove that the tenants intended to harm her business.” S.D.

nomena, he says. The people most likely to report seeing ghosts are, of course, people who believe in ghosts. They also tend to be people who have a “low tolerance for ambiguity,” Houran says. That means that, when faced with something they can’t explain, their minds land on supernatural explanations. “I’m not dismissing these experiences at all,” he says. “They are

real, and they have been experienced all over the world, across history and across different cultures.” Many times, hauntings begin with uneven lighting or other ambiguous sensory experiences. “Environments that give you a lot of ‘stop and go’ signals cause people to feel unsettled,” he says. Sometimes, however, supernatural experiences point to actual physical hazards. High levels of electromagnetic energy can trigger visions of ghosts or the feeling of a spiritual presence by exciting the brain’s temporal lobe, researchers have found. Getting bombarded with very low sound waves, known as infrasound, can also leave people feeling stressed and uneasy. And carbon monoxide can cause people to feel panicky and out of breath and even see flashing lights. “If people start having weird experiences, rather than thinking of that as ghosts, they should think of it as a health concern,” Houran says. “Get your apartment checked out to make sure it’s up to code.” Sleep disorders are another common source of supernatural experiences — especially a phenomenon known as “sleep paralysis” where you become conscious before your body fully wakes up. The result is a terrifying feeling of not being able to move, sometimes accompanied by vivid hallucinations of terrifying creatures, scientists say.

“If people start having weird experiences, rather than thinking of that as ghosts, they should think of it as a health concern. Get your apartment checked out.” — JA ME S HOUR A N, A PSYCHOLOGIST WHO SAYS MANY HAUNTINGS CAN BE EXPLAINED BY PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL PHENOMENA

Krystal Porras, founder of the Woodbridge, Va.-based group “3:33 a.m. Paranormal Research,” believes that these visions are often real. “Here in Virginia, we are scattered with Civil War sites and Native American burial grounds, so we get a lot of haunted houses, but it’s really the land that’s haunted,” she says. She and her colleagues, who perform free consultations and investigations, field about 16 phone calls a month — and renters get more than their fair share of ghosts, Porras says. The constant turnover of many people in a relatively small space is more likely to stir up supernatural activity, she says. Though these spirits are often annoying, they are rarely out to harm you, Porras says. “These things only have as much power over a person as you allow them to have power over you,” she says. Chris, Celina and Naomi have tried taking both scientific and spiritual approaches to banishing their ghost. They’ve tried jumping on the floor to see if small tremors might explain the open cabinets, they’ve consulted with ghost hunters, burned sage and said prayers. Nothing worked, so the three are moving out at the end of the month. “We are staying away from anything older-looking,” Celina says. “And anything with too many cabinets. “A year ago if someone had told me they had ghosts in their apartment, I would have thought they were crazy,” Celina says. “But they are real, let me tell you.” SADIE DINGFELDER (E XPRES S)

Who Died In Your Home? History In the nation’s capital, where various degrees of stupid and scandalous always bookend the inspiring and historic, lots of people wish their old walls could talk. Real estate history is a hot pursuit here, whether it means trawling Google or whirring through the microfiche archives to see your 1920 building permit. The epicenter of this hobby? The D.C. Humanities Council’s annual house history workshop (wdchumanities.org). The sessions fill up right away with people clamoring for guidance in prowling the photo archives or the building permit database at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library downtown. The unsentimental field guide in this pursuit is Brian Kraft, a fasttalking database guy who can help you find the permits on any building in the District. “It’s the birth certificate of the building,” he says. Death is a popular theme in home-history research. USA Today recently did a story on diedinhouse.com, a website that compiles public records to help you decide whether those noises you’re hearing at night may actually be the guy who died in the basement. “Yeah, that’s the kind of information we do find,” says Bruce Yarnall, operations and grants manager for the city’s Historic Preservation Office. “Doing historical research is like lifting up a rock.” PETULA DVORAK (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Redford Portrays ‘Life of I’

Robert Redford stars in “All Is Lost,” J.C. Chandor’s indie feature about one man against the sea.

Film Review

ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

A One-Man Show In ‘All Is Lost,’ screen legend Robert Redford plays the kind of role he’s fought to preserve Film At 77, Robert Redford’s still got it. Anyone needing proof of that fact will be convinced by his newest movie, a man-against-nature thriller called “All Is Lost” in which he plays a nameless character whose sailboat runs afoul of a shipping container in the Indian Ocean. The film, written and directed by J.C. Chandor (“Margin Call”), chronicles his weeklong attempt to keep his boat afloat and stay alive. Redford thoroughly dominates the drama, in which he’s the sole star and in which he utters just a few words of dialogue, putting his body through moments of watery peril, hopelessness and existential terror. D u r i ng f i l m i ng, Red ford

immersed himself in the role. He saw the film for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival, at a gala black-tie premiere. “I had not seen anything,” he says. “I had not looked at the monitor between takes, I didn’t go to dailies, I took myself out of that. So when the lights came down I didn’t know what to expect.” He was prepared for the worst, he recalls. “And when it went the other way, I just didn’t know what to do with it. I did not know how to behave.”

‘All Is Lost’ (PG-13) Director: J.C. Chandor Stars: Robert Redford In a Nutshell: Redford plays a nameless character whose sailboat crashes into a shipping container in the Indian Ocean. Over the course of a week, the hero fights to keep his boat from sinking, survive the elements and find a way to safety.

It’s entirely in keeping with Redford’s wary, often ambivalent relationship with success that he didn’t quite know what to make of his latest one. This is a man who came to New York in the 1950s in order to be a painter and instead found himself drawn — despite his California-bred contempt for shallow movie culture — to acting. This is the man whose watchwords have always been: At the height of your greatest success, always go back to zero. “All Is Lost” is a product of the success of the Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival, which Redford spent most of the 1980s and 1990s building to nurture small, independent filmmakers. “I got off my stride a bit with my own work,” he admits. “I kind of woke up and said, ‘Wait a second, I need to go back to what I do.’ “Its purity is what attracted me,” he says of Chandor’s script. “It was very bold, I was attracted by that. There’s no dialogue. It was

not going to have a lot of special effects. It was a very pure experience that I felt had gone missing [in movies].”

“There’s no dialogue. It was not going to have a lot of special effects.” — ROBERT REDFORD, STAR OF J.C. CHANDOR’S “ALL IS LOST,” ON WHAT DREW HIM TO THE DIFFICULT ROLE IN A SMALL, INDEPENDENT FILM

LIONSGATE/ROADSIDE

When Chandor’s film “Margin Call” made its debut at Sundance in 2011, he handed Redford the script for “All Is Lost” (which, with no dialogue, amounted to 30-some pages). It took the actor 10 minutes to say yes to the role. “I just want to be an actor,” he recalls telling Chandor. “I’ll put myself in your hands, and let’s go.”

“All Is Lost,” a harrowing manat-sea adventure starring Robert Redford, reprises this fall’s theme of protagonists isolated and adrift in the midst of an indifferent, wantonly cruel universe. Writer-director J.C. Chandor distills that idea to its visually purest form yet. The beating heart at the center of ChanChandor dor’s film is Redford himself, who plays his nameless adventurer in a virtually wordless performance with the wary determination a generation came to adore in the 1970s. His stillhandsome face is weathered and aged and grows more painfully sunburned over the course of his character’s ordeal, which begins when the boat he’s sailing is rammed by an errant shipping container in the Indian Ocean. Chandor filmed “All Is Lost” at the same Baja, Mexico, location as “Titanic,” and his film possesses the same old-fashioned sense of spectacle, all the more impressive for being so self-contained and finely tuned. His attention to detail makes “All Is Lost” a technically dazzling, emotionally absorbing experience. Like “Cast Away” and “Life of Pi” before it, “All Is Lost” joins a fine tradition of stranded-survivor narratives. Chandor takes the form one step further: Redford’s character doesn’t even have a volleyball or Bengal tiger to talk to. This is “Life of I,” in the deepest philosophical sense of that word.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY

Now, This Is More Like It

I like top 10 lists, but they’re by definition pretty limiting. So I started thinking about doing my Oscar picks the last week of December, after all the eligible films have been released but before the nominations come out. It would be kind of amusing, plus then I wouldn’t have to write an Oscar picks story in March. Win-win! I started jotting down the names of films and actors I think have a shot at a trophy — not my favorites, necessarily, but those I think can compete. And, slowly, something started to dawn on me: I listed three films about black characters

(“12 Years a Slave,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Fruitvale Station”) that I think have a good shot at best picture. The directors of those films are black, too (though I don’t think

After having more time to think about “12 Years a Slave,” I’ve changed my mind about something. I always thought the greatest performance in American film was Sean Penn’s in “Dead Man Walking.” Not anymore. Congrats, Mr. Ejiofor.

“Fruitvale’s” Ryan Coogler will make the final cut for best director). Chiwetel Ejiofor, Forest Whitaker and Michael B. Jordan all have shots at best actor (though, again, I think “Fruitvale’s” Jordan will just miss a nomination). The Oscars have been getting more diverse over the years, but not as much as you might think. Last year’s best picture nominees included two films with black major characters: “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and “Django Unchained.” Both had white directors. 2012’s nominees included “The Help,” which also had a white director. In 2011, not one of the 10 best picture nominees had a black major character. Zero. That year, toys were better represented than African-Americans. Assuming I’m right — a dan-

I started thinking about my end-of-year coverage this week, mostly because thinking about stuff that’s due six weeks from now is easier than thinking about the story that was due yesterday.

From top: “12 Years a Slave,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Fruitvale Station” are all likely to be in the running for trophies at the 86th Academy Awards.

gerous assumption when it comes to the Academy Awards — 2013 could signal a major shift in Oscar history. For example, I think the best supporting actress nominees will include Octavia Spencer, Oprah Winfrey and Lupita Nyong’o. With only two slots left, it’s possible that more black women than white women will get nods in the category — and this by an organization that has nominated black women only 27 times in 85 years. It’s still early, of course, and there are some very white, very stronglooking movies yet to be released, including “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Nebraska” and “August: Osage County.” And, no matter when I do my picks, I’ll be wildly wrong, because I always am. One thing is certain, though: High-caliber American filmmaking is actually starting to look like America. Read Kristen Page-Kirby’s previous The Reelist columns at: readexpress.com

‘Grandpa’ Falls, Can’t Get Up Gross gags will appeal mainly to fans of the ‘Jackass’ franchise If you liked the “Jackass” television series and its movie spinoffs, you’ll probably love “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.” Starring Johnny Knoxville, the chief perpetrator of many of the disgusting and/or painful-looking stunts featured in those reality show episodes and films, “Bad Grandpa” is a loose sequence of hidden-camera pranks centered on the outrageous antics of a fictional octogenarian.

Film Review

Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville, left) is “Bad Grandpa” to little Billy (Jackson Nicoll).

Some of them are quite funny, to the degree that you are mused by explosive diarrhea and the effects of age and gravity on certain parts of the male anatomy.

“Bad Grandpa” has only the most superficial of plots. Irving, a lecherous, foul-mouthed and wildly irresponsible old coot created by Knoxville during the last season of

his television show, is driving his 8-year-old grandson, Billy (Jackson Nicoll), across the country. Knoxville’s old-age makeup looks strikingly real, and most of the people he encounters take him for exactly what he appears to be: an elderly idiot who has no business taking care of himself, let alone a minor. There are some hilarious setups: Irving hires unsuspecting movers to help him load his late wife’s corpse (played by co-producer Spike Jonze in drag) into the trunk of his car; Billy, also in drag, enters a child beauty pageant, performing a raunchy striptease to Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” before an audience of shocked parents.

‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa’ (R) Director: Jeff Tremaine Stars: Johnny Knoxville, Jackson Nicoll In a Nutshell: Irving Zisman (Knoxville), an irresponsible and loopy old man, takes his 8-year-old grandson, Billy (Nicoll), on a crosscountry tour involving hidden-camera pranks.

But the reactions of most of the folks caught on camera seem stuck somewhere between bemusement and mild alarm. Part of the subversive thrill of “Jackass” always lay in the fact that there was real danger. In “Bad Grandpa,” the stakes seem weirdly low. MICHAEL O'SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Evangelical missionaries preach in Roger Ross Williams’ “God Loves Uganda.”

Fanning the Flames of Hate ‘God Loves Uganda’ faults U.S. evangelicals for nation’s homophobia Film Review You’d never guess the subject matter of “God Loves Uganda” from its innocuous-sounding title. Although the documentary begins as an examination of the work of American Christian missionaries in Uganda, it methodically, and in almost roundabout fashion, circles ever closer to its true target, which is the anti-homosexuality bill currently being considered by the Ugandan parliament. The most controversial feature of the law is a proposed death penalty for so-called repeat offenders. Just as alarming is the connection that the film draws between the brand of conservative Christianity being imported into the country and this legislative attempt to institutionalize barbarism. Humanrights watchers allege that this religion-stoked homophobia has already manifested itself in an eruption of anti-gay street violence, including the 2011 bludgeoning death of Ugandan gay-rights advocate David Kato.

The film — by director Roger Ross Williams, who won an Oscar for his 2010 short “Music by Prudence” — proceeds largely without narration. The Rev. Kapya Kaoma, a Zambian priest and Ugandan gayrights researcher who fled to Boston because he feared for his life, sets up the film’s central premise: That however well-intentioned, the American Christian missionaries in Uganda have facilitated a climate of hate. One example is Scott Lively, an American anti-gay activist and evangelical minister who has prominently worked in Uganda since 2009. Lively is on record as having uttered some mind-boggling stuff, such as that gays were largely responsible for Nazism. Never mind that, in reality, homosexuals were among the victims demonized — and exterminated — by the Nazis. “God Loves Uganda” clearly lays the blame for the state of homophobia in Uganda at the feet of the American evangelical movement. The movie doesn’t really argue its case, preferring to stand back, in quiet outrage, as the representatives of that movement are shown with the match in their hands. By the looks of it, “The Counselor,” a rancid, ultimately sodden crime thriller, was made to appeal to several audiences, among them fans of the cinematic stylings of Ridley Scott; acolytes of cult author Cormac McCarthy; and admirers of the Irish actor Michael Fassbender, who between the 2011 drama “Shame” and the opening sequence of this movie, has become Hollywood’s go-to-sex-guy for explicit between-the-sheets adventures. In that teasingly graphic scene with Penelope Cruz, “The Counselor,” which Scott directed from a screenplay by McCarthy, supposedly lays its cards on the table: This is a movie that will pull no punches when it comes to sex (and, later, violence), but will instead confront viewers with frank, uncomfortably straightforward portrayals of the darkest parts of human nature. Sadly, the filmmakers then dispense with any shreds of honesty they may have once aspired to by cutting to a shot of Cameron Diaz, riding a horse while a cheetah runs

alongside behind her. As Malkina, the silver-clawed, gold-saber-toothed femme fatale (who has a string of leopard-like spots tattooed down her back), Diaz is just one of the tawdry characters who populate the south Texas nether-world of “The Counselor,” a sewage-soaked demimonde that is as confusing as it is spiritually compromised. It seems that Fassbender’s title character — attorney at large to lowlifes — is in the midst of a shady deal involving Malkina’s boyfriend, Reiner (Javier Bardem), and a shadowy figure named Westray (Brad Pitt). Just what the deal is and how it all goes horribly wrong, it seems, are so tiresome that McCarthy felt it necessary to gussy it up with windy, Shakespearian speeches, wearying conversational dead ends and lots of gratuitous swipes at female sexual appetites, which are clearly a source of enduring and unresolved anxiety for the poor guy. Isn’t McCarthy — author of “No Country for Old Men” and “The Road” — supposed to be the master of macho toughness and spare stylistic control? You wouldn’t know it from this self-consciously nasty piece of borderland noir, in which his familiar tropes by now look hackneyed and pathetic. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Sips Go on an Exotic Trip Spark palates and party conversations with wines from lesser-known regions

Besides whitewashed buildings, black sand beaches and turquoise waters, Greece boasts a wine industry dating back 6,500 years. (Remember, these lguys created Dionysus, the drink-swillning god of you-know-what.) Idyllic Sandtorini is home to Assyrtiko, a full-bodied yet crisp white that picks up minerality from volcanic ash soil and salinity from sea breezes, like the 2012 Sigalas Assyrtiko (right, $27, MacArthur Beverages, 4877 MacArthur Blvd. NW; 202338-1433). “Drink this wine young and fresh [just a few years old],” recommends James Horn, wine director of Kapnos (2201 14th St. NW; 202-2345000), who likes to pair it with raw oysters.

Invite friends over for a wine bash, and at least a few will bring the requisite bottle of California Chardonnay or Cab. But you’ll avoid boring them by eschewing the usual suspects (we’re looking at you, Cupcake Merlot or Kendall-Jackson anything). “Tell your friends you have surprise wines coming from a new ‘Old World’ region,” suggests Uros Smiljanic, general manager of Ambar (523 Eighth St. NW; 202-8133039). Think Greece, Turkey, the Balkans, even Lebanon. Serve wines blind, wrapped in paper bags, to avoid bias about the juice inside, and set out small plates and meze so the guests sip and savor, too.

The Balkan Peninsula’s winemaking dates to Roman times; oenophiles can geek out on its history and obscure grapes. Intensely aromatic, with whiffs of flowers, pineapple and stone fruits, Serbia’s Tamjanika grape is exotic-yet-quaffable, and the 2011 Vino Budimir Tamjanika Zupa ($19, MacArthur Beverages) bursts with aromas of peaches and tropical fruit; it’s a good partner with gibanica (Balkan cheese pie). Inkyhued 2012 Agrina Doo Portuguiser (above, $15, MacArthur Beverages) goes down soft and smooth, with hints of black currants and blackberries; serve it with charcuterie. “Balkan wines show finesse, concentration and elegance,” says Ambar’s Smiljanic.

Dark, brooding Xinomavro (whose name, not surprisingly, means “black acid” in Greek) is mouthwatering, with enticing spice and black pepper notes. Horn suggests grabbing the 2010 Domaine Karydas Xinomavro ($30, MacArthur Beverages) to serve with grilled thyme chicken skewers; the wine evolves after uncorking, so the last sip will be deliciously different from the first. Home to 6001,200 indigenous varietals, Turkey is the world’s fourth leading producer of grapes. What’s that? Yes, some Muslim countries produce wine, even if not everyone who lives in them drinks it. Try the 2012 Kavaklidere Cankaya

TURKEY

($9, Potomac Wines and Spirits, 3100 M St. NW; 202-333-2847), a blend of Narince, Emir and Sultana. It’s a “bright and aromatic white wine with grapefruit, lemon, stone fruits and minerality,” says Daniel-ctor la Senior, beverage director of Zaytinya (701 Ninth ). St. NW; 202-638-0800). It likes to party with the country’s cuisine — think hummus, babaa ghanoush and fresh seafood. k kServe the easy-drink09 ing, herb-tinged 2009 Sevilen Kalecik Karasi (above, $15, Potomac Wines and Spirits) with meze or lamb kabobs. “It has red cherries, plums and red berries, as well as hints of tarragon and thyme, and a subtle earthiness,” Senior says.

“Tell your friends you have surprise wines coming from a new ‘Old World’ region.” — UROS SMIL JA NIC, GENERAL MANAGER OF AMBAR

Lebanon’s climate and topography are similar to France’s. Its number of wineries has increased since 1998 from five to 30-plus; its Bekaa Valley may be the best wine region you’ve never heard of. Chateau Musar is known for reds, but Senior loves the 2011 Chateau Musar White ($16, Potomac Wines and Spirits). A crisp blend of indigenous grapes Obaideh and Merweh, with aromas of apricots, apples, tarragon and honey and a creamy mouth feel, it’s terrific with cheese. Grilled lamb chops beg for the 2010 Massaya Silver ($19 at Potomac Wines and Spirits), a Rhone-like Cinsault/Grenache/Mourvedre blend with red and violets, spice and grippy tannins. KELLY A. styles lookout “I got tired of the way [my kids’] things were so disposable. … But my old school satchel would look better and better as I used it.”

Julie Deane When Julie Deane’s daughter was being bullied at school, the Cambridge, England, mom brainstormed how she could make money to send her to a better one. So, with just 600 pounds, Deane designed and sold a run of bags based on the school satchel she toted as a girl in England. Now in its fifth year, The Cambridge Satchel Company just launched at Cusp (3030 M St. NW; 202-625-0893). Do you have a background in fashion? Dear no! I studied plant cells at Cambridge University. After I got my master’s, I studied accounting and business. For a while there, I was a full-time mom. I hope my story encourages people to give something a go. When did you realize you’d made it as a fashion brand? The first magazine we were in was Italian Vogue. The first collaboration we did was with Comme des Garcons. Now we’re carried in places like J. Crew and Bloomingdale’s.

People will tell you things won’t work, but it’s incredible how your life can change just by being brave. What do you think explains the bags’ mass appeal? It’s just a very plain, simple design that everybody can wear. It’s in a variety of colors, so there’s something in brown for professionals, and then there’s neon for people who want to have a little more fun. It’s not flashy or gimmicky. How is your design different from the original version? We’ve tried to make it more suit-

And you manage to keep it fresh. We play with colors, we offer monogramming, and we play around with the size and shape. What gave you the idea to create the bags in the first place? I had a similar one when I was in school in the ’70s. When my children were 6 and 8, I got tired of the way their things were so disposable. I’d buy them a bag, and they wouldn’t like it after a while or I’d get one that would look grubby within in a week. But my old school satchel would look better and better as I used it.

Was it difficult persuading your kids to wear such an old style? I worried they wouldn’t think it was a trendy thing, because no one used them any more. And then I thought, hang on, Harry Potter would have worn one! Just look at that Hogwarts school uniform — there’s no way he wouldn’t have one. Is your daughter still a fan? She saw the little mini and said, “That’s what I’d like for Christmas,” and I thought, “Well that’s good, because I won’t have to go shopping.” HOLLEY SIMMONS (EXPRESS)

DEAR MANOLO

MONROE STREET MARKET is a new apartment/ retail complex in Northeast D.C. (716 Monroe St. NE; monroestreetmarket.com). On Saturday, it hosts Art in the Mix, a fashion and culture festival headlined by Scott Schuman, at left, the dapper street photographer behind the popular blog The Sartorialist (thesartorialist.com). At 2 p.m., Schuman will answer style questions and sign his latest book, “Closer” ($30, Penguin). Also o on tap: a beer garden and live ve music.

ANSWERS FROM THE SHOE BLOGGER

Manolo says, it is true what the Manolo has long said, that the beautiful young peoples would look good in the Gareth Pugh burlap sacks and the Birkenstocks (which is indeed the recent trend). This is one of the key principles behind the fashion show: That even the worst article of clothing, designed by the most untalented hack, still looks good when worn by the supermodel strutting down the catwalk to the techno music. But do not be deceived. Those 1980s retro-Madonna bib overalls, with the one shoulder strap artfully undone, which you saw being worn by the fetching gamin on the H Street NE are not for you, Respectable Lady of the Certain Age. For you, the instant you put on the stonewashed Big Smiths and unbuckled the strap, you would look like one of the minor characters in the touring version of Li’l Abner Goes to Washington, perhaps Aunty McMutton, or some such. And this is why the Manolo cautions against adopting the trend of the short boots and flannel, as appealing as it may seem. It is better to go with the more sophisticated lace-up, one that will better withstand the vagaries of fashion. Here is the Prance from the Donald J. Pliner, the croc-patterned riding boot ($498, zappos.com), which would look smashing on the beautiful mature woman of taste. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

GARANCE DORE

Recently, I’ve seen a lot of young women wearing flannel shirts and short lace-up boots. I love this casual look. Do you think that a woman of a certain age (me, in this case) would be able to carry this off? —AMY

Jayson Home (jaysonhome.com) also thinks the colorful, feather-like offset prints belong on your bed, as in new stitched quilts (below, $275-$295) and cotton throws ($78). The exotic textiles look equally nice mixed into modern boudoirs or layered in more traditional spaces. (Picture one with contrasting velvet shams.)

punks dug Dr. Martens boots and brogues. Now, the 50-year-old Brit brand appeals to modern D.C. fans with a new Georgetown flagship (3108 M St. NW; 202-265-4654). Exposed brick and shoe-themed art set off men’s and women’s styles including quilted (above, $140) and spiked (bottom, $350).

Brain ain Food BREAKFAST IS NOT ONLY the most important meal of the day, it’s also the spookiest. At least that’s true when you use Williams-Sonoma’s skull-shaped pancake molds ($10 for three, local Williams-Sonoma stores). Simply place the templates on a hot skillet, pour in your batter, then pluck off the cranium molds when it’s time to flip. The haunting steel devices boast a nonstick coating, so Bisquick won’t cling. Want to make your cakes ultra creepy? Add red food coloring to the mix.

Flanagan will show and sell such fall pieces as simple-yetsophisticated blouses, obis, skirts (above, $75, $22 and $110) and shift dresses at an open house at the studio from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday (1794 Columbia Road NW, Suite 6).

A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
