Few remember the brave British airman who saved Churchill’s butt

A Philadelphia-area mayoral candidate says he was serious when he vowed to investigate the potential use of drug-sniffing bunnies if elected — even though it appears to stem from a hoax. Candidate Dave Gautreau broached the idea Thursday at a Phoenixville mayoral forum. He told a reporter he thought he had confirmed the bunnies had been used in Lancaster, but it turns out the concept was an April Fools’ gag by police in Amherst, N.Y. (AP)

An ex-worker in a Texas county’s juvenile justice department was charged with theft for allegedly stealing $1.2 million worth of fajitas over nine years. The plot blew up when Gilberto Escaramilla was off work and 800 pounds of fajitas were delivered. The department doesn’t serve fajitas. He allegedly had been intercepting deliveries and reselling them. “If it wasn’t so serious, you’d think it was a ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit,” the prosecutor said. (AP)

A cigar half-smoked by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill during a 1947 trip to Paris sold for $12,000 in an online auction last week. RR Auction of Boston said the buyer was a collector from Palm Beach, Fla. Churchill is said to have smoked the cigar May 11, 1947, at the Paris airport. Included in the auction was a photo signed by Churchill with the cigar in his hand at the airport. A British airman who flew Churchill saved the butt for posterity. (AP)

Secrets of the V.P. house

“I’m so proud of how hard my father worked to receive this honor. He took a lot of pride in his career as a Hurricane.”

The vice president’s residence — on the grounds of the Naval Observatory in Northwest Washington — did not become official until 1975, but it has seen its share of history. A new book, “Number One Observatory Circle,” by Charles Denyer, shares stories from the home. EMILY HEIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A satellite conspiracy

Pizza delivery for ‘Petro’

Better than White House?

So here’s a weird “coincidence”: Satellite images of the residence taken while Dick Cheney was in office looked “scrambled and quite blurry.” But when he left and Joe Biden began his tenure, the images “strangely became much clearer,” the book notes, leading some to conclude that Cheney had somehow exercised control over them. “Mere coincidence, surely, but it only added to the drama and mystique of the Cheney vice presidency,” Denyer writes.

Even though Navy stewards cook for the residents, the family of former Vice President Dan Quayle would occasionally order delivery pizza. But the veep couldn’t just use his own name and have the pizza dropped off on his doorstep, so the family used the last name of Secret Service agent Joe Petro and would have the pie delivered to the guard shack. Years later, Petro told Denyer, he ran into Quayle, who told him that the family still uses his name as an alias when ordering pizza.

Nearly every VP longs for that top job — but not because of the home that comes with it. Several of its residents have said that they far prefer the home at the Naval Observatory, which is relatively secluded and surrounded by private grounds, to the more public White House, which is constantly surrounded by tourists. “It’s been said that both Biden and [Obama] wholeheartedly agree that as far as living arrangements go, the vice president’s residence is ‘way better,’ ” Denyer writes.

The D.C. area has some advantages over other regions. VIRGINIA Last year, Elias Murillo was all about politics. He was really into Bernie Sanders. When Sanders lost, Murillo switched to Donald Trump, the other guy he figured would step up for regular people. It was all very exciting, a show that just kept on going. For a while, he even felt hopeful. Now, Murillo knows Virginia is electing a new governor in three weeks, but he’s paid little mind. “Everybody’s put it aside,” said the 31-year-old graduate student. “With all the hate and all the tragedies going on, with Las Vegas and natural disasters and threats and the back-and-forth with the president and North Korea, it makes it hard to vote for governor. It’s just become so hard to focus, to keep up with it all.” Virginians speak of being exhausted by events. They say that they have only so much bandwidth and that President Trump takes up most of the space they allot to politics. They say they haven’t heard much about the governor’s race between Democrat Ralph Northam and Republican Ed Gillespie in the news, which seems devoted mainly to the president. As the nation’s only competitive statewide contest this year, the Virginia race has been

Martin Cox, who works for a defense contractor in Leesburg, is a steady Democrat who voted for Hillary Clinton last fall and considers Trump “bombastic and noisy.” Cox, 35, usually follows campaigns for governor closely, taking time to thoroughly research the candidates’ views. Not this year. “Given Trump’s penchant for sucking the air out of the room, this election could be a way to send a message that he needs to start listening to all sides and tone down the way he speaks,” Cox said. “But I haven’t really heard much about the candidates and I haven’t done my research.” MARC FISHER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FAIRFAX COUNTY A Northern Virginia man accused of killing a 17-year-old Muslim girl as she walked back to her mosque is now facing a possible death penalty after an indictment Monday charging him with capital murder and rape. The June slaying of Nabra Hassanen, who had been out with friends eating a meal ahead of pre-dawn Ramadan services, rattled the region’s Muslim community. More than 200 supporters wearing “Justice for Nabra” T-shirts showed up at a preliminary hearing Friday for the man charged in her death, 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres of Sterling. Martinez Torres The hearing was delayed when Nabra’s parents had to be restrained from charging at Martinez Torres. Nabra’s mother threw a shoe at him. Police had said previously they were investigating whether Nabra had been sexually assaulted, but Monday’s indictment is the first time that prosecutors brought sex crime charges of any kind against Martinez Torres. Virginia law allows prosecutors to pursue a death penalty only

Fare evasion is a safety issue. By focusing on fare evasion, Metro is working to reduce employee assaults, improve customer safety and stop criminals from entering the system. And it’s only fair that every customer pays for the train and bus service he or she uses.

Myth

Fact

People are arrested when they don’t pay the fare on Metro.

92% of stops result in either a warning or a citation. Arrests are almost always the result of another crime, such as an outstanding warrant.

In the District of Columbia, fare evasion results in a criminal record.

Adults who pay the fine will NOT face criminal charges. Juveniles receive a written warning.

Fare enforcement is just a way to get more money for Metro.

The money paid in fines goes to the local government, not Metro.

Fare enforcement disproportionately targets certain communities.

Fare enforcement activity occurs at all stations throughout the system, in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia.

Metro has bigger issues to worry about than fare evasion.

Conflicts over fares are the top cause of employee assaults at Metro, endangering bus operators, station managers and Metro riders.

When riders don’t pay the fare, they’re hurting their fellow riders. Making sure that every rider pays the fare is an important part of Metro’s commitment to provide safe and reliable transportation for you.

Iraqi soldiers advance toward Kirkuk, where they seized oil fields and other facilities Monday.

APTN VIA AP

Tensions rise in Iraq as forces enter Kirkuk Military’s push into disputed city deepens rift with Kurdish allies KIRKUK, IRAQ Two weeks after fighting together against the Islamic State, Iraqi forces pushed their Kurdish allies out of the disputed city of Kirkuk on Monday, seizing oil fields and other facilities amid soaring tensions over last month’s Kurdish vote for independence. The move by the Iraqi military and its allied militias so soon after neutralizing the Islamic State in northern Iraq hinted at a country that could once again turn on itself after disposing of a common enemy.

Civilians and federal troops pulled down Kurdish flags around the city. Kurdish Gov. Najmaddin Karim, who had stayed at his post despite being dismissed by Baghdad weeks ago, fled to Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish zone. Revelers waving Iraq’s national flag and the flag of its Turkmen minority flooded central Kirkuk in an evening celebration. But it was the Shiite sectarian chants heard above the din of the rally that underscored the coming political battles between Iraq and its Kurdish region. As well as highlighting the deep rifts in Iraq, the confrontation has also exposed splits among the Kurds themselves. Kurdish

factions were divided on whether to allow in Iraqi troops or stand their ground, with some Kurdish fighters, known as peshmerga, ordered to give up their posts. Washington has trained and equipped the advancing Iraqi troops and the peshmerga Kurdish forces on the other side. “We don’t like the fact that they’re clashing,” President Trump said at a Rose Garden news conference, adding that the United States had a “very good relationship” with both the central government and Kurds. “ We never shou ld h ave been there,” he said, referring back to the 2003 invasion, “but we’re not taking sides.”

Almost the entire cohort of chicks from an Adelie penguin colony in the eastern Antarctic was wiped out by starvation last summer, in what scientists say is only the second such incident in more than 40 years. Researchers said Sunday the mass die-off occurred because unusually large amounts of sea ice forced penguin parents to travel farther in search of food for their young. By the time they returned, only two out of thousands of chicks had survived. The environmental group WWF, which supported the research, urged governments to approve a new marine protection area off East Antarctica. (AP)

Mass die-off of penguins causes alarm

Blast suggests re-emergence of al-Shabab MOGADISHU, SOMALIA With the death toll having risen to 302 in one of the world’s deadliest attacks in years, the al-Shabab extremist group has sent a powerful signal that the international focus on extremism can’t afford to overlook the African continent. Saturday’s truck bombing on a crowded Mogadishu street showed that al-Shabab, targeted for years by U.S. airstrikes and tens of thousands of African Union forces, has once again made a deadly comeback. Pushed from Somalia’s capital in recent years, al-Shabab has retreated mostly to rural areas of the country’s south. While demonstrating al-Shabab’s resilience in the face of new military offensives by the U.S. and Somalia, the attack also highlights the shortcomings of drone strikes in a politically fraught country with a weak military and police, analysts said. “Decapitation strikes certainly serve a purpose, but al-Shabab will not be defeated this way. They replenish leadership very quickly,” said Matt Bryden, a security consultant on the Horn of Africa who once served as a United Nations expert. Although al-Shabab has not claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack, the Somali government says there can be no doubt. Bryden agreed, saying that “no other group in Somalia has the capacity to put together a bomb of this size, in this nature.” ABDI GULED (AP)

Supreme Court will hear U.S.-Microsoft dispute

Bomb kills reporter who worked on Panama Papers

A New Jersey man was convicted Monday of planting two pressurecooker bombs on New York City streets, including one that injured 30 people with a rain of shrapnel when it detonated in a bustling neighborhood on a weekend night in September 2016. The verdict in Manhattan came after the twoweek trial of 29-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahimi, an Afghanistan-born man living in Elizabeth. The charges, including using a weapon of mass destruction and bombing a public place, carry a mandatory punishment of life in prison. Prosecutors said Rahimi was inspired by the Islamic State group and al-Qaeda. (AP)

The Supreme Court on Monday accepted an important case on digital privacy, agreeing to hear a dispute between the federal government and Microsoft about emails stored overseas. The case began in 2013, when U.S. prosecutors got a warrant to access emails in a drug trafficking investigation. The data was stored on Microsoft servers in Ireland. Microsoft turned over information it had stored domestically but contended U.S. law enforcement couldn’t seize evidence held in another country. A judge upheld the warrant, but a federal appeals court panel overturned the ruling.

A Maltese investigative journalist who exposed her island nation’s links to offshore tax havens through the leaked Panama Papers was killed Monday when a bomb exploded in her car, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said. Daphne Caruana Galizia, 53, had just driven away from her home in Mosta when the bomb went off, sending the vehicle’s wreckage spiraling over a wall and into a field. Muscat said Caruana Galizia’s death resulted from a “barbaric attack” that also amounted to an assault on freedom of expression. He described her as “one of my harshest critics” as he denounced her slaying. (AP)

The Trump wranglers How aides inside the ‘adult day care center’ work to control and coerce the president

In Rose Garden, Trump tackles diverse topics

SAUL LOEB (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS When Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., described the White House as “an adult day care center” on Twitter last week, he gave voice to a certain truth: President Trump is often impulsive, mercurial and difficult to manage, leading those around him to find creative ways to channel his energies. Some Trump aides spend a significant part of their time devising ways to rein in and control the impetuous president, according to interviews with 18 aides, confidants and outside advisers, most of whom insisted on anonymity to speak candidly. The White House dismissed Corker’s suggestion that aides spend their days trying to contain the president. The point was highlighted last week in an unusual briefing by White House chief of staff John Kelly. “I was not brought to this job to control anything but the flow of information to our president so that he can make the best decisions,” Kelly told reporters. “So, again, I was not sent in to — or brought in to — control him.” Trump is hardly the first president whose aides have arranged themselves around him and his management style — part of a natural effort, one senior White House official said, to help ensure the president’s success. But Trump’s penchant for Twitter feuds, name-calling and temperamental outbursts presents a unique challenge. One defining feature of managing Trump is frequent praise, which can leave his team in what seems to be a state of perpetual compliments. The White House pushes out news releases

overflowing with top officials heaping flattery on Trump. One regular practitioner is Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who praised Trump’s controversial statements made after white supremacists staged a violent rally in Charlottesville and also said he agreed with Trump that NFL players should stand during the national anthem. Neither issue has anything to do with the Treasury Department. Former treasury secretary Larry Summers wrote on Twitter that “Mnuchin may be the greatest sycophant in Cabinet history.” H.R. McMaster, the president’s national security adviser, has frequently resorted to diversionary tactics to manage Trump. In the Oval Office, he will often volunteer to have his staff study Trump’s more unorthodox ideas. “He plays rope-a-dope with him,” a senior administration official said. “He thinks Trump is going to forget, but he doesn’t. H.R.’s strategy is to say, ‘Let

The art of the stall Sam Nunberg, who worked for Trump but was fired in 2015, said he always found him to be “reasonable,” but noted that delaying a decision often helped influence the outcome. “If [Trump] wanted to do something that I thought could be problematic for him, I would simply, respectfully, ask him if we could possibly wait on it and then reconsider,” Nunberg said. “And the majority of the time he would tell me, ‘Let’s wait and reconsider,’ and I would prepare the cons for him to consider — and he would do what he wanted to do. Sometimes he would still go with the decision I may have disagreed with, and other times he would change his mind.” (TWP)

ranks with Trump without drawing his ire than Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who has disagreed with his boss on a range of issues, including the effectiveness of torture, the importance of NATO and the wisdom of withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal. The president appreciates how Mattis, a four-star Marine general, speaks to him candidly but respectfully and often plays down disagreements in public. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, an informal Trump adviser, scoffed at the suggestion that Trump needs to be managed by his advisers as parents would handle an unruly child. “He’s the president of the United States. Period. Is he an unusual president? Sure. But so was Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt,” Gingrich said. “You guys in the media would have had a field day with them, too.” ASHLEY PARKER AND GREG JAFFE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

At a joint news conference in the White House Rose Garden, President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell tried to dismiss reports of a troubled relationship, but the appearance veered into many other topics as well. Here were some takeaways. (TWP/AP/EXPRESS) Honoring fallen soldiers Asked why he hadn’t yet made a public comment on the deaths of four U.S. soldiers earlier this month in Niger, Trump said he called and wrote the soldiers’ families. Then he claimed his predecessors didn’t call families of fallen soldiers. President Obama’s office rejected that claim as “unequivocally wrong.”

Attacks in Cuba Trump said, “I do believe Cuba is responsible” for the bizarre sonic attacks on U.S. diplomats in Havana that have affected as many as 25 people. The comments are a departure from State Department messaging.

Drug czar nominee Trump said “we’re going to be looking into” a report about Rep. Tom Marino, R-Pa., his drug czar nominee, in the wake of The Washington Post/“60 Minutes” investigation that found Marino helped steer legislation that made it harder for the government to take some enforcement actions against giant drug companies.

Scientists detect huge cosmic crash

SUBSCRIBER BENEFIT!

2 018 WASHINGTON POST

CALENDAR

Signals from collision 130 million years ago arrived on Earth in Aug.

SCIENCE It was a faint signal, but it told of one of the most violent acts in the universe, and it would soon reveal secrets of the cosmos. Astronomers around the world reacted to the signal quickly, focusing telescopes located on every continent and even in orbit to a distant spot in the sky. What they witnessed in midAugust and revealed Monday was the long-ago collision of two neutron stars — a phenomenon California Institute of Technology’s David H. Reitze called “the most spectacular fireworks in the universe.” “When these things collide, all hell breaks loose,” he said. Measurements of the light and other energy emanating from the crash have helped scientists explain how planet-killing gamma ray bursts are born, how fast the universe is expanding and where elements like gold come from. It started in a galaxy called NGC 4993, seen from Earth in the Hydra constellation. Two neutron stars, collapsed cores of stars so dense that a teaspoon of their matter would weigh 1 billion tons, danced ever faster and closer together until they

collided, said Carnegie Institution astronomer Maria Drout. The crash, called a kilonova, generated a fierce burst of gamma rays and a gravitational wave, a faint ripple in the fabric of space and time, first theorized by Albert Einstein. “This is like a cosmic atom smasher at a scale far beyond what humans would be capable of building,” said Andy Howell of the Las Cumbres Observatory. The crash happened 130 million years ago, while dinosaurs still roamed on Earth, but the signal didn’t arrive on Earth until Aug. 17, after traveling 130 million light-years. A light-year is 5.88 trillion miles. Signals were picked up by

NASA’s Fermi telescope and gravity wave detectors of the LIGO Laboratory, whose founders won a Nobel Prize this month. Before August, the only other waves detected by LIGO were generated by colliding black holes. But black holes let no light escape, so astronomers could see nothing. This time, there was plenty to see. The colliding stars spewed bright blue, super-hot debris that was dense and unstable. Some of it coalesced into heavy elements, like gold, platinum and uranium. “ There are ma ny, ma ny extraordinary discoveries within the discovery,” said Columbia University physics professor Szabolcs Marka. Trump to visit Duterte during long trip to Asia

Bergdahl pleads guilty to deserting in Afghanistan

President Trump will meet with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte during a Nov. 3 to 14 trip to Asia, the White House announced Monday. Duterte is hosting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations conference in Manila. He has come under international criticism for his administration’s brutal crackdown on drug trafficking, which has resulted in thousands of extrajudicial killings. Trump also will visit China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. (AP)

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was captured and held by the Taliban for five years after walking away from his post in Afghanistan, pleaded guilty Monday to desertion and endangering his comrades — charges that could put him behind bars for the rest of his life. “I understand that leaving was against the law,” said Bergdahl, 31. He admitted guilt without striking a deal with prosecutors, so his punishment will be up to a military judge when he is sentenced. (AP)

NBA TIPOFF

Labels are for shedding Fair or not, certain NBA players get stuck with labels — me-first; poor defensively; injury-prone; soft; unable to win in the clutch. Left unchecked, those reputations can define entire careers. A new season starts tonight, and for five players that marks a new chance to change the perceptions attached to their names. Depending on how this season plays out, each man can either confirm the narrative or adapt to improve his reputation. TIM BONTEMPS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

In his first three seasons, Irving had no success on his own. Yes, he was MVP of the 2014 All-Star Game, but his Cavaliers teams went 78-152 and didn’t make the playoffs until LeBron James returned. Irving was a tremendous sidekick to James for three years — and hit one of the biggest shots in NBA history to win the 2016 NBA title — but his trade request this summer left many scratching their heads. If Irving, 25, can lead the Celtics back to the conference finals and then give James and the Cavaliers a series, questions about his leadership, or his ability to be “The Man” on a contending team, will go away for good.

When he entered the NBA in 2014, he was viewed as a versatile defensive stopper who would struggle to assert himself as a primary offensive weapon. But the opposite has occurred. Wiggins averaged 23.6 points last season and raised his 3-point percentage to 35.6 while providing little in the other areas of the game. For Wiggins, 22, to live up to the five-year, $148 million contract he signed last week, he has to use his immense athletic gifts to become a complete player. If he stays the same — which still looks good next to Karl-Anthony Towns and Jimmy Butler — he won’t make good on his new deal.

He’s been durable and dependable in his career, but that has translated only into individual success: career averages of 21.2 points and 10.8 rebounds; three All-Star games; two all-NBA teams. It can’t be attributed to Cousins alone that the Kings were a dumpster fire during his six-and-a-half years there. But there’s no doubt he played a part. Now playing alongside another elite big in Anthony Davis, and with a quality point guard in Jrue Holiday, Cousins, 27, has a chance to push New Orleans into the playoff picture in the West. Doing so would prevent him from moving further up the list of games played without a postseason appearance.

Two years ago, the Lakers picked Russell at No. 2 overall, making him the first in a series of young players attempting to replace Kobe Bryant as the face of the franchise. But after a rocky 24 months, Los Angeles flipped Russell to the Nets in a dump of Timofey Mozgov’s contract. The good news for Russell, 21, is that Brooklyn is perfect for him. Coach Kenny Atkinson is a top-flight developer of talent who runs a fastpaced, small-ball system tailored to Russell’s skills. And, unlike the Lakers, the Nets are virtually irrelevant in their massive media market, allowing him to develop at his own pace in a pressure-free environment.

When Memphis gave Parsons a four-year, $94 million contract — by far the biggest free-agent deal in franchise history — in July 2016, the rationale was reasonable. The Grizzlies got a 6-foot-10 forward capable of operating as both a spot-up shooter and a playmaker. But the knee issues that plagued him in his final two seasons in Dallas turned him into a shell of the player he used to be. He averaged 6.2 points while playing in just 34 games last season. Parsons, who turns 29 next week, was healthy in the preseason, but it’s going to take a full year of being available and productive to turn around his career narrative.

After Cleveland’s practice Monday, coach Tyronn Lue said he still didn’t know if LeBron James would be available to face former teammate Kyrie Irving in the latter’s first game with Boston. James has been slowed by a sprained left ankle for more than two weeks. James, who joined post-practice shooting drills and didn’t speak to reporters Monday, has never missed an opener. (AP)

The top scoring teams from last season face off as Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry lead the defending champion Warriors (115.9 points per game in 2016-17) against the Rockets, who averaged 115.3 points last season before acquiring nine-time All-Star Chris Paul. With Paul running point next to James Harden, Houston now has a super backcourt to throw at the Warriors’ superteam. (EXPRESS)

Toronto visits tonight for first meeting since hard-fought first round NHL For the first few years of Tom Wilson’s NHL career in Washington, the Toronto native returned home each summer in relative anonymity. But things changed after the Capitals eliminated the Maple Leafs in the first round of last year’s playoffs with Wilson scoring three goals, including an overtime game-winner. “When I first got back, you’d walk into Home Depot or anywhere and you couldn’t hide,” he said.

“You’re kind of public enemy No. 1.” Rivalries are born in the playoffs and last year’s series between the Capitals and Maple Leafs may have bred a good one. The Capitals and Maple Leafs meet tonight at Capital One Arena (7, NBCSWA) for the first time since Washington beat Toronto in six games in April. Five of the six games required overtime, tying an NHL single-series record. Although the Capitals lost six regulars from last year’s club, the rivalry should continue to grow with the Maple Leafs emerging as a contender in the East. Toronto will also take part in an outdoor game against the

The Capitals gave up eight goals in Philadelphia in their first game without their No. 1 defenseman. Things don’t get any easier against the Maple Leafs (4-1-0), who entered Monday leading the NHL with 5.2 goals per game and ranked fourth with 37.4 shots per game. The Capitals (3-2-1) have allowed at least 36 shots on goal in four of their first six games after doing so just seven times in each of the previous three seasons. The NHL’s reigning Rookie of the Year, Auston Matthews, whom Caps coach Barry Trotz compared to Mario Lemieux, leads Toronto with five goals and eight points in five games.

Louisville’s Athletic Association officially fired men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino on Monday, nearly three weeks after the school acknowledged it is under investigation as part of a federal corruption probe. The ULAA, which is composed of trustees, faculty, students and administrators, voted unanimously to oust Pitino, who spent 16 years with the Cardinals and won the 2013 NCAA title. The association heard from Pitino’s attorney, who argued that his client “could not have known” about the activities alleged in the FBI investigation. (AP)

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s personal trainer details their twice-a-week gym sessions for a new book and a talk in D.C. YOU MIGHT NOT WRITE POWERFUL OPINIONS from the Supreme

Court bench, but you can work out like you do. “The RGB Workout,” out today, is an illustrated exercise book written by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s longtime personal trainer, Bryant ABBY GREENAWALT

Johnson, that details their hour-long, twice-a-week sessions at the court’s gym (where “PBS NewsHour” plays in the background). Next week, the 53-year-old Army veteran, a court clerk who moonlights as a personal trainer, will discuss the book and Ginsburg’s regimen with Politico’s Edward-Isaac Dovere at Sixth & I (600 I St. NW; Oct. 24, 7 p.m., $15). ZAINAB MUDALLAL (EXPRESS) What motivated you to put together this book? Everyone talking about the planks and pushups that she does. And my thought was, “You think that’s all that she really does?” My publicists reached out to me and said this would be a great idea. And as I started to go back and think about all the exercises that I actually have her do, I surprised myself. We do a lot. If you think she’s tough on the bench, she’s tough in the gym. And I wanted to make sure people knew that. You’ve been training her for 18 years. You guys must be close. She’s the longest relationship I’ve

been in, so you end up respecting each other in a nonverbal way. I respect her, and I respect that she has confidence in me. We laugh, we joke. Sometimes I’ll say a joke that I think is really funny and she might not laugh. And sometimes we talk about something and we don’t realize we’re talking about it. Or we can just not say anything and it’s still OK. You’ve clearly made a huge impact on her life. Has she made the same on yours? It helps me when I’m helping other people. The beauty about this book is that this is going to get rid of any excuses people have. I

can’t be everywhere at the same time, but with this book, I can help others. She’s inspired my mother, who is 75. She thought, “Well, if [Ginsburg] can do it and she’s 84, I know I can do it.” And she’s so inspiring. I remember this one thing the justice said: “Everybody knows the members of the seven dwarfs more than the Supreme Court justices. That’s really the way it’s supposed to be. It’s really about the law.” That’s just how she is. She quietly works and gets things done. Are these workouts geared toward older women? It’s a broad workout that anyone

can do. When you start using your body weight, you’re using it at the intensity level that you can do. I use the same saying as I do as an equal opportunity adviser in the Army: Exercise doesn’t care about your race, religion, color, gender, national origin and/or sexual preference. Regardless of how old you are or how young you are, you gotta do it. What is her least favorite workout? Side planks and planks. They are the most challenging to her. We used to do crunches and other variations, but once she got really strong I just switched it up on her and she was like, “What?” And her favorite? The one she is most proud of, and it’s the one people are always amazed at, is the pushups. She actually does 10-12 pushups off of her knees, then she does another 10 with one hand on a heavy ball and the other hand on the ground. So it’s almost like onearm pushups but on her knees.

Why can’t he ever admit he’s wrong? Q. My husband has to “win” every argument, no matter how small. Even when he is clearly wrong, he has to have the last word. He is a sensitive man and not at all domineering, yet when there is a disagreement, even about something factual, he has to defend himself and will never admit being wrong. I tell him that this drives me crazy and makes me not want to talk to him, but he can’t seem to stop. CAN’T STAND THIS But in these arguments, he is being domineering. Granted, it might not come from a typically controlling personality: Perhaps it’s obsessiveness, nit-pickiness, tunnel vision or just being certain he is the definitive expert on ’80s band Fun Boy Three. Bulldozing his way through these interactions is still not “sensitive,” though.

And refusing ever to admit being wrong is choosing to put a serious crack in the foundation of a true partnership. Of course, this gets meta — talking to him about how it affects you might bring out the same refusal — so maybe it’s time to break out the advice column cliche of showing him this letter?

Exhibit A of why outside relationships need not include sex to cause trouble in a marriage! Has this been getting worse? If so, it might not just be a cause of marital problems but a symptom of them. Part of this is a tech issue: Texting makes him ever-present in her pocket. So why not start there? Acknowledge that he has a unique role in her life, but the frequency/intensity/ nature of her communication with him intrudes upon your own connection. Can she start by putting the phone away at certain times when she’s with you? Making a point to stretch herself to open up to you first sometimes, perhaps initially about ways that she feels a gap between you? Make sure, too, that your relationship with him is in good repair, so that this doesn’t get set up further as a “him vs. me” dichotomy. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. How to prepare for healthy fall eating As fall starts, our bodies start to crave more cooked, warming foods such as soups, stews and meats. The cold winter air and wind dry out the earth and our bodies, too, a sensation we feel in our throats and sinuses. Here are 10 ways to prepare — and eat — for the fall season. CASEY SEIDENBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST) 1 If you didn’t jump on the springcleaning bandwagon, dig through your pantry and refrigerator and discard expired items. Make a list of pantry essentials, then take inventory to see what you have and what you need. 2 You will probably use your oven a lot more often than you did in the summer. Clean it. 3 Gather recipes that are more appropriate for fall such as soups, stews, chilies, curries, root vegetables and heavier meats. 4 Broaden the variety of root vegetables you cook, such as beets, parsnips, carrots, butternut squash and sweet potatoes. Choose fruits such as oranges, bananas, avocados, grapefruit, pineapples and mangoes. All of these are rich in vitamins A and C to boost immune

health before cold and flu season. 5 Use a variety of healthy fats such as coconut oil, olive oil, flaxseed oil, walnut oil and ghee. 6 Eat whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, millet and barley. They are full of dietary fiber for healthy digestion and iron for blood health. 7 Make a homemade, nutritious stock to use in soups, stews and sauces. 8 Add warming spices to your dishes such as ginger, cinnamon, cumin, cardamom, mustard seed, cloves and fennel. 9 Add wintergreens such as Swiss chard, collards, kale and spinach to soups, smoothies and pasta dishes. 10 Hearten your smoothies by adding almond butter, raw cacao and hearty greens such as kale.

While Harry Styles dabbles in ’70s rock, Louis Tomlinson gets into EDM, Liam Payne embraces R&B and Zayn Malik explores neo-soul, “Flicker” finds Niall Horan on the folkier side of pop. Horan’s solo effort, out Friday,

isn’t flashy, but his songs are built sturdily; his warm voice is unrushed and unpretentious. Sounding like a mix of John Mayer and Ed Sheeran, “Flicker” is a mature effort from the Irish boy bander, who had a hand in writing every song. The 10-track album opens with the infectious, dance-friendly “On the Loose” — but that’s not representative of the whole. It’s as if Horan just wants to show he can put out pure shimmering pop

Horan heads in a folksy direction

With One Direction on hiatus, Niall Horan experimented with airy, delicate tunes for his “Flicker.”

like anyone else — and then move on. The rest of “Flicker” is airy, dreamy and delicate as it explores love with subtle guitar work, like the achingly beautiful “Paper Houses,” the slightly twangy “You and Me” and the Fleetwood Macish “Since We’re Alone.” Horan has tapped some top producers — including Greg Kurstin, Julian Bunetta and Jacquire King — and they showcase him unfussily and without any tricks. The album is a lot like its cover: a portrait of an artist looking straight and honestly into the camera. MARK KENNEDY (AP)

Crossing over to the dark side Here, Groff discusses his gritty role, working closely with Fincher and psychoanalyzing the country’s worst killers.

TELEVISION While many of his fans know him from HBO’s “Looking” or as Broadway’s pouty King George in “Hamilton,” audiences are now seeing Jonathan Groff in an entirely different role in the new Netflix series “Mindhunter.” Produced, and directed in part, by David Fincher, the crime drama has Groff portraying a 1970s FBI agent trying to get into the mind of serial killers.

This character’s a departure for you. Had you ever wondered what it was like to be in law enforcement? No. Being an actor and artist feels like the opposite. We’re emotional, we’re expressive, we’re empathetic, and playing someone in law enforcement seems like the antithesis of that — which made it really exciting. Also, the character of Holden is inquisitive, really interested in bringing

Jonathan Groff gets into the heads of serial killers for ‘Mindhunter’

Totally. As amazing as “Silence of the Lambs” is, David wanted to blow up that notion of the comic book version of the serial killer, that brilliant omniscient genius, and really take a genuine human look at who these people are.

In “Mindhunter,” Jonathan Groff plays an FBI agent with serious business.

psychology and sociology to law enforcement. He’s kind of the New Age FBI agent. That first interview with a serial killer in prison is bone-chilling. It’s sort of the moment everything comes into clarification. At one point, the killer asks, “Why

“The Daily Show” alum Wyatt Cenac to star in 10-episode comedic docuseries on HBO

are you so tense?” For two days of shooting, I’d been fidgeting and doing various things, and suddenly David came over and said, “What if you don’t do anything?” It was genius. There seems to be a “Silence of the Lambs” dynamic here.

The term serial killer didn’t even exist then? No, and that’s the fun of the show. It’s all this vocabulary that we’re now very comfortable with, but back then it didn’t exist. Watching these guys sort of shooting from the hip, going on instinct, is really interesting. There’s no Hannibal Lecter here? It’s almost easier to understand if it’s an Anthony Hopkins type. “Oh, they’re an insane brilliant crazy person.” But when it’s, no, this dude is my weird neighbor that I ignore, that’s really scarier. trending “Someone tell Mayim Bialik you don’t have to be hot to get sexually assaulted.” @KATHBARBADORO, tweeting in reaction to “The Big Bang Theory”

actress Mayim Bialik’s recent New York Times op-ed, titled “Being a Feminist in Harvey Weinstein’s World.” Bialik writes that as someone who is not a “perfect ten,” she makes “choices every day as a 41-year-old actress that I think of as self-protecting and wise.” Bialik was called out for victim-blaming by many other women online, prompting her to issue a response that her words were taken “out of ... context.” @_ElizabethMay tweeted in response: “Mayim Bialik’s article is terrible, harmful, poorly written garbage, and her statement in defense of it is bulls---.”

@KAYSARAHSERA, tweeting with the hashtag #MeToo, which thousands of women are using to say that they have been sexually harassed or assaulted, to show the scope of the issue. @NaomiMLaw tweeted: “Imagine if instead of #MeToo, abusers, finally too overwhelmed by their guilt & shame, came forward to say #ItWasMe.”
