A poodle was freed with the help of New Mexico firefighters after one of its paws got stuck in a bathtub drain. Twelve-year-old Selene Ortega told KRQE-TV that she was giving her dog, Morita, a bath Friday when the poodle started screaming. Selene says she and her family called their veterinarian, a plumber and then 911. Firefighters tried to use lotion and shampoo to get Morita’s paw out. They eventually cut open the bathtub. (AP)
A leading Austrian political party has issued a garden gnome alert after 400 of its figurines disappeared from lamp posts used in campaigning. Placed by the Socialist Party ahead of elections in western Austria, the gnomes were hung more than 9 feet from the ground — presumably in part to prevent mass pilfering. The party suspects the heists were less outright theft and more dirty electioneering, accusing the rival People’s Party of being behind the disappearances. (AP)

Prosecutor spars with McDonnell VIRGINIA A pivotal moment in the corruption trial of Bob McDonnell and his wife began Monday as a prosecutor aggressively opened his cross-examination of the former Virginia governor. In a series of rapid-fire questions, Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Dry asked whether McDonnell denied key facts about his relationship with businessman Jonnie Williams Sr. Did McDonnell deny that he knew that Williams paid $15,000 for his daughter’s wedding? “No,” McDonnell replied.
Did he deny that he loaned $50,000 to the family in 2011? “No,” McDonnell said. How about that he personally negotiated $70,000 in loans from Williams in 2012? Or accepted golf outings and equipment? Fort Lee locks down as soldier kills herself
The Pentagon has developed plans that would allow American forces to remain in Afghanistan beyond the end of the year if a security agreement isn’t signed soon, the top U.S. military officer said Monday. Gen. Martin Dempsey, told reporters that under optimal circumstances the U.S. would need about 120 days to pull all troops and equipment out of the country if there is no agreement allowing them to stay into 2015. Kennewick Man traveled long distance The mysterious Kennewick Man — an ancient skeleton discovered in 1996 in Washington State’s Columbia River Valley — was a seal hunter who traveled far and wide. He had a projectile point lodged in his hip, five broken ribs that never healed properly, two small dents in his skull and a bum shoulder from the repetitive stress of throwing spears. The man, who died 9,000 years ago, came from somewhere far away, far up the Pacific Northwest coast, such as Alaska, or even as far away as Asia. That’s the argument editors make in a new, 688-page, peer-reviewed book, “Kennewick Man: The Scientific Investigation of an Ancient American Skeleton,” that will be published this fall by Texas A&M University Press. Al Sharpton on Monday called for a change in policing after the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Mo., saying that Michael Brown Jr. should be remembered for more than just disturbances. “A movement means we’ve got to be here for the long haul and turn our chance into change, our demonstration into legislation,” Sharpton told mourners at Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church. Sharpton was speaking at the funeral service for Brown, who was shot and killed by officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9. The Monday service drew crowds to the St. Louis church, including celebrities, politicians and
civil-rights activists. Then his flight was canceled. Brussels Airlines had to halt flights to the affected region after Senegal’s refusal this weekend to allow the carrier to touch down in Dakar for crew changes. Senegal was sending a clear signal that it wanted nothing to do with flights going to Liberia, Guinea or Sierra Leone, where the outbreak rages on. This move was just the latest
by a growing wave of countries and airlines that appear to want to stave off the Ebola threat by stopping travel in and out of places confronting the virus. Frieden, along with other U.S. officials, scrambled to jump on one of the few remaining options — a Delta flight that arrived Sunday, said Jeremy Konyndyk, director of the USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance, who was part of the mad dash. The increasing cancellations and border closures have alarmed public health officials worldwide. They’ve also frightened residents in the affected countries who
fear they may be trapped within their borders — and worry about economic fallout from their dwindling access to the outside world.

In Freetown, Sierra Leone, uncertainty has fueled rumors. The few remaining flights are booked solid. British rapper’s ties to jihad under scrutiny MIDEAST It’s still unclear who the masked Islamic State jihadist depicted in video footage killing American journalist James Foley is. Over the past few days, British tabloids have published a great deal of speculation on the identity of the killer, dubbed “Jihadi John.” The leading theory is that he may be Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, an Egyptian-British rapper who grew up in London. Bary, whose nickname as an artist was L Jinny, has been in Syria since at least last year. He earned notoriety this month when a slew of grisly images published on Twitter by foreign jihadists in Syria included one of him holding aloft the severed head of a man. Now among the legion of foreign fighters drawn to Syria by the lure of the extremist Islamic State, Bary is one of a large cast of jihadists well known on social media. Bary is thought to belong to a trio of British jihadists referred to as “the Beatles” by former hostages. The Islamic State loves to display its internationalism online. The prevalence of such characters in the Islamic State is a sign of the organization’s ability to attract disaffected youths in Europe and elsewhere who are seduced by its rhetoric of violence and spiritual redemption. As recently as last week, “Orange Is the New Black,” Netflix’s hit series about a women’s prison, was the second-most-pirated TV show in the world on a daily basis after HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” according to CEG TEK, a data service that tracks online piracy. The show was downloaded — mostly illegally — about 60 million times in the first six months of this year, more than the number of Netflix’s total users, according to Internet data research firm Tru Optik. Online viewers are rampantly sharing files of the stolen videos, bypassing payments to cable firms and broadcast networks
that rely on viewers to watch ads. But the fact that Netflix shows are also being voraciously downloaded illegally renews industry worries that there are no clear solutions to piracy. Entertainment executives had hoped Internet-based services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime would persuade those watching pirated videos online to begin paying or subscribing legally — much the way music lovers embraced iTunes, even if they had grown up illegally downloading files on Napster. But even Netflix, which at $8 to $9 per month for a streaming-only plan costs a fraction of a typical cable bill, may not be able to curb online theft. One-quarter of Internet users around the world have illegally downloaded content, Jon Nicolini, chief technology officer at CEG TEK, said. It’s still too early to discount the possibility that services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus will ultimately dampen piracy, said Ernesto Vandersar, co-founder of Torrent Freak, a website and blog focused on copyright and piracy. He notes that most people who download files illegally also tend to be the biggest consumers of media overall. Those who download music illegally spend 30 percent more on legal copies of songs and albums, according to the American Assembly report. A rare feat for Maryland’s coaching staff MARYLAND TERPS Andre Powell was always determined to coach at the highest level, to be a head coach. But sometime in the 1990s, his goals gave way to a singular purpose: to become the best coach and recruiter he could possibly be, wherever he was. He started as a student assistant at Indiana in 1988 and made eight stops before joining Randy Edsall’s staff as a running backs coach at Maryland in 2011. The following season, Powell became the team’s special teams coordinator. It was his third time holding that title, yet it also marked a rarity. With Powell joining offensive coordinator Mike Locksley and defensive coordinator Brian Stewart, Maryland had three minority coordinators in 2012 — and two years later the trio is still together. Maryland enters
this season as the only school in Division I to hold that distinction. “Thinking back to 15 to 20 years ago, when I was beginning to coach, I don’t even remember black coordinators. I’m sure there were a few. I wasn’t aware of them,” Powell said. “I just think that things are changing. I think some of the stereotype’s lifted, and people see that you need to just find the best that you can hire.” A report released last month by the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport found that 15 of the 125 FBS head coaches were minorities in 2013. That number is 14 heading into this season — and alongside Texas, Vanderbilt and Tulane, Maryland is one of four schools in the country to have three minorities in the top four positions on staff. The Rooney Rule, an NFL policy that requires teams to interview minorities for head coaching positions, doesn’t exist in the NCAA. According to the NCAA’s website, Division I

But if they do, it’s believed Washington brass would be hesitant to part with the third-year backup because of Robert Griffin III’s preseason struggles, according to a person close to the situation. The Rams learned on Sunday that quarterback Sam Bradford will miss the entire season with a torn ACL in his left knee. St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher told reporters Sunday that the team hadn’t yet begun investigating options regarding acquiring another possible starting

quarterback. But he added, “It doesn’t mean to say that we won’t, but we haven’t done it at this point.” This preseason, Cousins has completed nearly 65 percent of his passes for 370 yards, four touchdowns and one interception while sporting a 101.6 passer rating. One person close to the situation thought it unlikely that Washington would trade Cousins with Griffin struggling as he tries to learn coach Jay Gruden’s system and develop into a pocket passer. Griffin has completed 13 of 20 passes for 141 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions while sporting a 46.0 passer rating. Gruden has said that the team
doesn’t have a quarterback controversy and continues to firmly state that Griffin is his starter. However, Gruden and the team’s decision makers think highly of Cousins. Last week, Gruden said the Redskins didn’t pull the trigger on a trade this offseason because they value Cousins as an insurance policy for Griffin. “He’s a good quarterback, and you don’t want to let quarterbacks out of your building if you don’t have to,” Gruden said. “Obviously there’s circumstances that could change that, but right now we’re happy with the quarterbacks that we have, and there’s no reason to change.” MIKE JONES AND MARK MASKE

Strength in numbers The DC Brawlers aim to rule the grid in a new national pro fitness league SPORTS Everyone faces challenges at work. But only a few folks have a job description like this: “You stand on your left leg, squat all the way down, then come out explosively and jump over a 20-inch hurdle and land with control.” That’s Christy Adkins, a 29-year-old nurse and CrossFit coach, describing an exercise she’d just encountered. And it’s one she’d better master soon — along with the heavy lifts, rope climbs, handstand pushups and other masochistic moves that make up “grid,” a new sport. Adkins is on the DC Brawlers, one of eight teams kicking off the National Pro Grid League’s inaugural season. The Brawlers boast a perfect record, having won their Saturday debut against the Phoenix Rise. They’ll try to keep the streak alive tonight at the Patriot Center, when they face off against the Philadelphia Founders in their
first home game. Just like in a grid match, everything has been happening quickly. The team was announced in April. The teammates met for the first time earlier this month in Las Vegas, where they held a 12-day training camp. And there are just two home games before quarterfinals start in late September, which doesn’t give potential spectators much time to figure out what’s going on. Here’s the gist: A match is 11 races on a four-quadrant grid. Who plays is dictated by the various exercises that make up each race — “there truly isn’t one person who is going to be the best at everything,” Adkins says. Of the starting lineup of five men and five women, one of each gender must be 40 or older. “It’s a fun opportunity to play with the young bucks,” says Jerry Hill, owner of CrossFit Old Town, who explains that “I’m not just 40

NOT READY It might hurt your relationship, but that doesn’t mean that the alternative — not speaking up at all — is any better. If there’s a fundamental mismatch in terms of timelines or commitment levels, he deserves to know (as begging back a DJ deposit on a canceled wedding reception is not fun). Bring the issue up in a comfortable, contextual way as a first step. You might use humor
(“I see you getting gaga over boutonnieres, but you know I’m not ready for wedding planning — how about I let you wear a tux to Noodles & Company instead?”) or a more serious sit-down (“I want to talk about us, because I feel sometimes you’re on a faster path than I am. What are your thoughts?”) He deserves honesty and a willingness for you to listen; you deserve the same from him.

We’re not debating his moral character here, or whether he’s doing this out of empathy, shadiness, laziness or being bamboozled. What matters is where he prioritizes your relationship in this mess. How bothered is he by the fact that he’s running a free bed-and-breakfast for his ex and her new lover? If you really want to have hope for this relationship, you need to see energy, motivation and a specific game plan. In the absence of that, I’m with your friends. Bulking up with gyms A Sport & Health deal has created D.C.’s largest fitness empire FACILITIES As teens growing up in Northern Virginia, brothers Kirk and John Galiani used to sneak into the Sport & Health in Tysons Corner to lift weights and play basketball. Thirty years later — after building up an impressive fitness industry résumé that includes a stint as owners of Gold’s Gym International — the duo is ready to play a whole lot more. Their company US Fitness (which operates the Crunch and Onelife gym brands in D.C. and Virginia) just acquired the 23-location Sport & Health chain. “We’ve been brainstorming ways to make them even better,” Kirk says. Millions of dollars have
been earmarked for renovations and new equipment, and changes will start to roll out within the next month or two, he adds. The sale won’t affect the December opening of the chain’s forthcoming location in Rockville’s Pike & Rose development, says Mark Fisher, who was CEO of Sport & Health and is now CEO of US Fitness. He views the luxurious, 32,000-square-foot club as a sign of what’s to come for the newly bulked-up company. “We’re putting the best of what we have in that location. It’s the tip of the iceberg,” Fisher says. Each of US Fitness’ three brands will maintain its own identity — upscale Sport & Health, boutique-y Crunch and affordable Onelife (which will soon open an Alexandria location) — Kirk says. But the pooling of resources and fitness expertise will elevate the experience
