Ousted from his office, Md. mayor pitches tent MARYLAND A tent — borrowed from an ally on the mostly hostile Seat Pleasant City Council — has become the place from which recently evicted Mayor Eugene Grant conducts municipal business. Beyond the zippered entrance, Grant sat in a folding lawn chair Friday, next to a plastic table that held his mayoral nameplate, as he signed city paychecks and heard constituent complaints about verbally abusive police officers and the high cost of electricity. It had come to this. City Council members voted 4 to 2 to force Grant to vacate his City Hall work space, after logging 13 complaints about his behavior over his 10 years as mayor (a total of 44 people work for the city).

Soap-opera strategy BOB McDONNELL: Many of his explanations revolve around a personal soap opera, which stars an insecure, possibly mentally ill first lady and an earnest but overextended public servant who has ascended so high that he can no longer manage his swelling responsibilities. He is forced to delegate, allowing a suave salesman to play a greater role in his wife’s life.

So far, former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, left, has testified for more than 12 hours over three days.

But will the jury believe his story? Bob McDonnell details personal woes and marital strife on the stand VIRGINIA Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell had just explained, with a heart-breaking letter, that his marriage was in shambles. He went on from there to describe how those personal woes sucked him into a public corruption case. He testified that first lady Maureen McDonnell was seeking money and attention from a charming, free-spending businessman. McDonnell told the jury he was in the dark about his wife’s affairs, both financial and (non-physically) romantic. And so the first criminal case in history against a Virginia governor could come down to this: Does McDonnell, self-professed micromanager and 2012 vice presidential prospect, make a convincing chump? “Maureen, I manage the finances,” McDonnell said he told his wife upon learning (belatedly,

he claimed) that she borrowed $50,000 from then-Star Scientific executive Jonnie Williams Sr. Did he manage them or not? That will be one key question for jurors when they weigh whether the couple corruptly lent Williams the prestige of the governor’s office in exchange for $177,000 in gifts, vacations and loans. The spectacle of Bob McDonnell’s testimony could largely determine their answer. Under the gentle questioning of his defense attorney, he has portrayed himself as humble, devoted to the commonwealth — and utterly blindsided by the depth of his wife’s entanglements with Williams. He’ll continue this week, when prosecutors get their chance to challenge his account. “He’s not negating the government’s case in its entirety, but he’s providing a different spin on things,” said Kelly Kramer,

a white-collar criminal defense lawyer. McDonnell told jurors he didn’t know his wife was decked out in designer fashions; he wears offthe-rack Jos. A. Bank. He never dreamed how pricey tee times could be at Williams’ country club. But McDonnell did not plead ignorance on everything: Records prove his knowledge of at least some of the gifts.

“I am completely at a loss as to how to handle the fiery anger and hate from you.” BOB McDONNELL, in a letter that he had written to his wife in September 2011 that was shown to the jury

Morgan State University football player dies 2 weeks after fainting at practice

MAUREEN McDONNELL: While that defense is unflattering, it’s a story line that Maureen’s own legal team has also pushed. Since the first lady’s position is ceremonial, she can’t be accused of trading official acts in her own right. WILL IT WORK? On one hand, it posits a compelling alternative to prosecutors’ theory. On the other, it could come off as the governor unfairly blaming his wife in a vain attempt to save himself. (TWP)

No matter what he or his family accepted, McDonnell told jurors he never made any agreements to help Williams or Star. If nothing else, the trial has provided dramatic proof of how little the public knew about its state’s chief executive. By day, McDonnell kept an almost frenetic pace of state and political business. By night, he was navigating his intensely complicated personal finances. By his account, his wife’s issues were a constant struggle. Even as he steered a state that’s home to more than 8 million, Bob McDonnell also found himself saddled, as one email showed, with lining up carpet cleaning for the family’s rental homes. Jurors might be convinced that the crush of McDonnell’s responsibilities kept him from fully grasping what was going on between Williams and his wife. But they might also find it hard to trust a man who so effectively hid his personal turmoil for so long. LAURA VOZZELLA, MATT ZAPOTOSKY AND ROSALIND S. HELDERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A model for Ferguson Journalist freed in Syria after Foley’s death

FERGUSON, MO. In early 2011, the tiny Jennings police department in north St. Louis County was reeling from a series of lawsuits and complaints that its officers had used excessive force on its black residents, including shooting at a fleeing car with a baby inside and striking a woman for making a joke. Today, the city of 14,000 about a mile from its sister community Ferguson has a newly constituted police force run by St. Louis County Police. The number of serious crimes has dropped dramatically. And by the accounts of some locals, the department has made strides in improving its relationship with residents. It has a lot in common with Ferguson, now the center of a firestorm over a white officer fatally shooting an unarmed black youth. It’s a police force in a middle-class community in the highly segregated north county. Its force is made up overwhelmingly of white officers. More than two-thirds of the residents are black. And the Ferguson officer who shot Michael Brown, Darren Wilson, had worked in the Jennings police department. Community policing — getting to know residents and building trusting relationships with them — was the key to rebuilding the police force in Jennings,

That really helps us solve crimes.” Crime is down, too, with serious crimes, such as homicides, stabbings and rapes, down by a third since March 2011, state statistics show. RGIII defends progress Redskins’ first-team offense has failed to score a TD in three preseason games REDSKINS Quarterback Robert Griffin III wrapped up his preseason on a decidedly down note Saturday, with Washington losing to Baltimore 23-17, and the first-team offense contributing a mere three points toward the effort. Griffin led the starters on just one scoring drive in six possessions, and it stopped shy of the end zone, salvaged by Kai Forbath’s 32-yard field goal. NATIONALS 14, GIANTS 6

Nats explode in 6th inning Ian Desmond and Bryce Harper each homered and drove in two runs as the streaking Nationals rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the Giants on Sunday. Sixth-inning rally: The Nationals’ scored six runs in the sixth on eight hits, tying for their most hits in an inning since they began playing in D.C. in 2005. Piling on: Washington added a run in the seventh and five more in the eighth. Strasburg chased early: Stephen Strasburg lasted just four innings and allowed five earned runs — his most at home since the final game of his innings-limitshortened 2012 season — on eight hits and two walks. Team effort: The Nationals scored 14 runs, but there wasn’t a single batter with more than two RBIs and eight different players had two hits or more. The only starter, other than Strasburg, who was hitless was Anthony Rendon, who was 0-for-3 but drew two walks. Staying hot: The NL Eastleading Nationals took the rubber game against the Giants and have won 12 of 13. On deck: Right-hander Tanner Roark (12-7, 2.80 ERA) will start the first of three games at Philadelphia tonight against A.J. Burnett (6-14, 4.42), who is 10-5 with a 3.39 ERA against Washington over his career. (EXPRESS/AP)

Jae Yeong Hwang drove in two runs and Hae Chan Choi weathered a late Chicago rally to lead South Korea to an 8-4 win in Sunday’s Little League World Series championship game. Hwang, below, gave up one hit in two-plus innings while striking out four. He also drove in the Asia-Pacific Region champs’ first two runs as they built an 8-1 lead before Jackie Robinson West made it close. Choi, who had a homer and scored twice, pitched the last four innings for South Korea, which won its third title after back-to-back championships in 1984 and ‘85. International teams have won each of the past five years except in 2011, when a U.S. team won. Brandon Green went 5⅔ innings for Chicago, which had survived four straight knockout games before the final. (AP)

South Korea wins LLWS over Illinois

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper is hitting .265 with seven home runs and 25 RBIs in 70 games this season.

Harper experiments using bats of other stars NATIONALS On Thursday, cameras caught the unusual sight of Bryce Harper hitting with a bat that had Yasiel Puig’s name etched into the barrel. For Harper, it turned out, it was not unusual at all. Puig had given Harper the bat, joining a long list of players Harper has borrowed lumber from. Harper said he has used bats given to him by, among others: Chase Utley, Michael Morse, Troy Tulowitzki, David Wright, Buster Posey, Todd Helton, Melky Cabrera and Miguel Cabrera. “I mean, I swing everybody’s model,” Harper said. Harper collects the bats not

15

as artifacts, but as experiments. He likes to switch between bats to find out what feels best to him at a given time, or even against a given pitcher. When he finds a bat he likes, he’ll order their model with his name on it. He has no problem swinging a bat with another player’s name on it. “Unless I’m playing against their team,” Harper said. “There’s no way, no shot.” Harper said that by the time the Nationals play the Dodgers, he’ll have ordered a batch of Puig’s model — YP-66 — with his name on the barrel, so he can use it if he wants. All players are particular about

which bat they use, but in different ways. Anthony Rendon sticks to one bat. Ryan Zimmerman has used Adam Dunn’s model — AD44 — for years. Players choose an established model more than making their own. Harper keeps one of Ian Desmond’s bats in his locker, and even though Desmond’s name is on it, it’s an MR-24, the model Manny Ramirez popularized. Harper’s constant trying out of so many other stars’ bats raises the obvious question: When will he have one of his own? “I swing so many different models, I won’t have a BH-34, probably,” Harper said, laughing. MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1

Which show will steal it?

‘The iHeartradio Album Release Party With Maroon 5’ 8 p.m. Tuesday, CW

Michelle Dockery, “Downton Abbey” (PBS) Claire Danes, “Homeland” (Showtime) Robin Wright, “House of Cards” (Netflix) Kerry Washington, “Scandal” (ABC) Julianna Margulies, “The Good Wife” (CBS) Lizzy Caplan, “Masters of Sex” (Showtime) Will probably win: Margulies. “The Good Wife” had an epic Season 5 and Margulies led the charge. Deserves to win: Margulies.

“The Big Bang Theory” (CBS) “Louie” (FX) “Modern Family” (ABC) “Veep” (HBO) “Orange Is the New Black” (Netflix) “Silicon Valley” (HBO) Will probably win: “Orange Is the New Black.” “Modern Family’s” four-year winning streak has to end sometime, and even though the inmates at Litchfield aren’t exactly hilarious, it is a stellar show. Deserves to win: “Modern Family.” The ABC sitcom delivers a genuinely funny, laugh-out-loud episode every week — even if it’s not cool to think so anymore.

Lead Actor in a Comedy Jim Parsons, “The Big Bang Theory” (CBS) Matt LeBlanc, “Episodes” (Showtime) Don Cheadle, “House of Lies” (Showtime) Louis C.K., “Louie” (FX)

Steve Martin will star in Disney’s “Magic Camp,” according to The Hollywood Reporter

William H. Macy, “Shameless” (Showtime) Ricky Gervais, “Derek” (Netflix) Will probably win: Parsons. With three trophies in this category, Emmy voters clearly have a favorite. Deserves to win: C.K. He’s received plenty of acclaim — even if this season was very controversial.

Comedy Series

CBS

”Breaking Bad” (AMC) “Downton Abbey” (PBS) “Game of Thrones” (HBO) “Mad Men” (AMC) “True Detective” (HBO) “House of Cards” (Netflix Will probably win: “Breaking Bad.” “True Detective” made waves, but the Television Academy should award “Breaking Bad” for its stellar season. Deserves to win: “Breaking Bad.” The excellent series has simply earned this for its unprecedented run from cult favorite to actual hit.

Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad” (AMC) Jeff Daniels, “The Newsroom” (HBO) Kevin Spacey, “House of Cards” (HBO) Jon Hamm, “Mad Men” (AMC) Matthew McConaughey,

Matthew McConaughey, Aaron Paul and Jim Parsons lead the nominees.

“True Detective” (HBO) Woody Harrelson, “True Detective” (HBO) Will probably win: Cranston. His Walter White was unforgettable and should win, unless McConaughey steals the prize. Deserves to win: Cranston.

Nothing says “television’s most prestigious award show” like a Monday night in August. And yet that’s exactly what we’ve got this year with the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards, which air tonight and honor the best of the best in the TV industry. Seth Meyers of NBC’s “Late Night” hosts the proceedings and tries to spice up a three-hour show that generally remains pretty similar year after year. But this year certainly has its share of nail biters. Here are our predictions about who could take home the gold. EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“The Voice” judge Adam Levine, below, returns to his day job with Maroon 5 in this special, in which the band talks about the release of its fifth studio album, “V.”

Lena Dunham, “Girls” (HBO) Edie Falco, “Nurse Jackie” (Showtime) Amy Poehler, “Parks and Recreation” (NBC) Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep” (HBO) Melissa McCarthy, “Mike and Molly” (CBS) Taylor Schilling, “Orange Is the New Black” (Netflix) Will probably win: Schilling. She has a slight edge based on the solid buzz and the Netflix “hip” factor. Deserves to win: Poehler. Let’s take a lesson from the Golden Globes and give her an overdue prize on the eve of her show’s final season.

In the season finale, Charlie and Holly discover there is indeed such a thing as bad publicity when they learn that the killer from the murder investigation is stalking the Mystery Girls.

That’s unpossible: My chat with ‘The Simpsons’ I wasn’t going to file a column this week because I am SO VERY BUSY watching every episode of “The Simpsons” EVER as part of the 277-straight-hour marathon on FXX that started Thursday and won’t end until Sept. 1, after all 552 episodes plus “The Simpsons Movie” have aired. But then the craziest thing happened. I began asking the Simpsons some questions — and they answered! I knew I had to share our exchange with my faithful readers. As you know, I am glued to the TV, enjoying your show. Marge: Sitting that close to the TV is bad for your health. Are there any dangers to excessive “Simpsons” watching? Homer, you watch a lot of TV. Any effects on you?

Death Row Records founder and rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight was injured in a shooting at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in 1OAK nightclub in Los Angeles but was expected to survive, police said. Two other victims, a man and a woman, were also being treated at local hospitals and were expected to survive. Authorities are still seeking a suspect. (AP)

Homer: I hope I didn’t brain my damage. You’ve been faithful to Fox TV for a quarter of a century. What do you think about Fox? Marge: You know, Fox turned into a hardcore sex channel so gradually, I didn’t even notice. I wish I were part of your family. Lisa: A man who envies our family is a man who needs help. My wife is mad because I won’t leave the house during this binge. What can I say to her? Homer: What’s the point of going out? We’re just going to wind up back here anyway. I guess I should get back to watching. Any parting words? Lisa: We should thank our lucky stars that they’re still putting on a program of this caliber after so many years. blog log

“Today I messed up by promising mankind free booze for all eternity.” @SQUAREKNIGHT sees the error of his ways

in promising free drinks to the Internet. Saturday morning, hours before the St. Louis Rams played the Cleveland Browns, @SquareKnight bet that if St. Louis’ Michael Sam sacked Cleveland’s Johnny Manziel and then flashed the money sign, “drinks are on me. For everyone in the world. Forever.” And then the sack happened. Twice. The Twitter user has since pledged a donation to Sam’s favorite charity in place of unlimited drinks.

“A return trip is not part of the deal.” MANFRED DWORSCHAK AT SPIEGEL.DE

makes clear the commitment of Mars One, a foundation that aims to settle the red planet — all while cameras document the experiment in the ultimate reality TV show. The project’s $6 billion price tag isn’t guaranteed to cover the total cost of the endeavor, which aims to launch 24 people to Mars. The first phase of the planned show would show the effort to narrow the 704 candidates still competing for a spot down to the lucky (?) few.

“If there are two things that go together on the Internet like cats and pizza — it’s cats and friggin’ pizza!” ALFRED MASKERONI AT ADWEEK .COM couldn’t be happier with the

“And to everyone involved in the casting of Peter Capaldi? We think we might just owe you a drink or two.”

latest ad campaign from Pizza Hut Japan: a mini-web series of sorts called “Pizza Cat!” The campaign follows the daily grind in a Pizza Hut location run entirely by cats. Actual real-life cats. You can watch the 11 episodes on the official website, pizzacat.pzh.jp.

SIMON BREW AT DENOFGEEK.US can stop holding

his breath after watching Saturday’s premiere of “Doctor Who.” The eighth season kicked off with a new Doctor, played by Capaldi. The introduction of new Doctors always puts fans on edge, but it looks like the Scottish actor is the perfect fit to take over the helm of the TARDIS.
