Woman’s attempt to liven up dull workday not a total success

A Sturbridge, Mass., man learned the hard way that fireworks aren’t the best way to deal with a hornets’ nest. Dave Schmida, 21, was trying to remove hornets high up on his family’s home Monday when a corner of the roof caught fire. The Telegram and Gazette reports he first sprayed the nest with Raid. When that didn’t work, Schmida used a Roman candle. A video shows the nest immediately go up in flames, along with the eaves. (AP)

A New York couple’s Florida vacation home has been taken over by dozens of black vultures that are vomiting and defecating everywhere. The Palm Beach Post reports the Casimano family can’t even visit their $702,000 home at Ibis Golf and Country Club. Siobhan Casimano described the smell as “like a thousand rotting corpses.” The vultures, lured by a neighbor who fed them, have destroyed screen enclosures and overtaken the pool. (AP)

An airport security worker has been fired for handing a passenger a note that said, “You ugly!!!” The June incident came to light last week after Neal Strassner obtained security video through a public records request and posted it online. The video from the Rochester, N.Y., airport shows the worker handing Strassner the note after he goes through a metal detector. Strassner says when he opened the note, the woman burst out laughing. Monument is ready for action NATIONAL MALL Eight years after it was rattled by an earthquake and three years after it was closed for elevator and other repairs, the beleaguered Washington Monument will reopen Sept. 19, the National Park Service announced Friday. Since the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake, the national landmark has been closed on and off for more than five years. As time passed, the Park Service wrestled with problems, and an estimated 2.5 million people missed the chance to enter the monument, which honors George Washington. “We are thrilled beyond words to be in the home stretch and now actually have an identified date when we’ll be able to start welcoming people back to the monument,” said Mike Litterst, a Park Service spokesman. Starting on opening day, sameday tickets for tours will be available on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 8:30 a.m. at the lodge near the base of the monument. And starting Oct. 10, tickets also can be ordered at

recreation.gov for tours beginning Oct. 19. The monument will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The reopening comes after the 2011 earthquake caused damage to the interior and exterior of the 555-foot marble and granite structure that forced its closure for 2½ years as it underwent repairs that cost about $15 million. The work was funded by the government and a $7.5 million donation from local businessman and philanthropist David Rubenstein.

“If the Trump administration . . . [is] taking the glory for this, it’s really Rubenstein [who] should take the glory for this.” EMILY DOUCE, of the National Parks Conservation Association, crediting philanthropist David Rubenstein for funding the monument’s repairs

Then, between 2014, when it reopened after the earthquake, and 2016, the monument’s elevator broke down 24 times, often stranding visitors who rode it to the top. The monument was closed again in 2016. With a further $3 million donation from Rubenstein, the Park Service began fixing the elevator and with government funds, began work on a new security screening facility. The Park Service, in its statement about the reopening, called it “another example of how the Trump Administration is enhancing visitors’ experiences at national parks and public lands.” In July, The Washington Post reported that the Park Service was diverting almost $2.5 million in entrance and recreation fees to help pay for Trump’s Independence Day extravaganza, when the agency had almost $12 billion in deferred maintenance. On Friday, Emily Douce, the National Parks Conservation Association’s director of operations and park funding, said that while it is “great” the monument is reopening, “It’s really Rubenstein [who] should take the glory for this.” MICHAEL E. and effective,” Northam spokeswoman Alena Yarmosky said. Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-Rockingham, chairman of the commission, said he expects the panel to overcome “philosophical divides.” “There are those that are skeptical, but I’m here to tell you that it is my hope and expectation that we’re going to adopt meaningful proposals at the end of this process that are going to keep communities safe across Virginia,” he said. But Lori Haas, state director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, was bluntly pessimistic. “It’s an absolute farce on the part of Republicans,” she said. “I personally have been advocating and presenting them with reports, and data, and research for

VIRGINIA Virginia’s Crime Commission will devote two days this week to mass shootings and other gun violence, issues vexing a state where 32 died in a university massacre a dozen years ago, another 12 were cut down at a municipal complex in May, and an average of three more were lost to shootings every day in between. Over daylong hearings today and Tuesday, the commission will hear from law enforcement officials, academics and activists. State delegates and senators will also attend, presenting about 60 bills proposed for a special legislative session on guns that GOP leaders ended after 90 minutes in July without taking up any bills. Leaders promised to reconvene Nov. 18, after state elections for all 140 legislative seats. GOP leaders said the bipartisan crime commission under Republican control would use the time in between to study the legislation and make recommendations to the General Assembly. Gov. Ralph Northam, D, and some Democrats say further study is unnecessary but not unhelpful. “While the governor rejects the idea that his proposed gun safety measures need further study, he is confident that the Crime Commission hearing will once again show these commonsense measures to be just that — common sense, bipartisan,

Tim Hugo, chair of the House GOP caucus, last week expressed support for a “red flag” gun bill that would remove guns from some people considered a risk to themselves or others, an apparent shift for the Fairfax Republican, who faces a tough reelection challenge in November. 12 years. They were just looking for a way to kick the can down the road when all eyes were on them during the special session.” Virginia Republicans have resisted gun control measures in recent years, saying they instead favor increasing criminal penalties for gun violations and addressing mental health issues. Haas says it makes more sense to take guns away from individuals who are a danger, noting that people who pose a danger often are simply violent, not mentally ill. “Ultimately this reflects the stranglehold the gun lobby has on the Republicans,” said Brian Moran, Northam’s secretary of public safety and homeland security. “They would rather incarcerate an individual than confiscate the firearm.” The commission has 13 members, seven of them Democrats. But only the six Republican and three Democratic members who are legislators can vote on recommending legislation to the General Assembly. Today’s hearing will run from 10 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., Tuesday’s from noon to 8 p.m. Time will be strictly limited. “I have an assault weapons ban bill that also deals with highcapacity magazines and silencers. And I will be allotted 180 seconds to present that important policy to Virginia, during what the Republicans promised would be a comprehensive study,” said Sen. Adam Ebbin, D-Alexandria. “And 180 seconds shows how serious they are.” LAURA VOZZELLA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

PASSENGERS AT DULLES AIRPORT

The number of passengers who traveled via Dulles International Airport in 2018, according to airport officials. That number, 5.1% higher than in 2017, marks the first time since 2014 that the airport has seen more passengers than D.C.’s Reagan National Airport. The airport’s turnaround, officials say, largely has been fueled by efforts to reduce the cost for airlines to do business there and to improve the Dulles experience for travelers. Baltimore-Washington International Airport remains the region’s busiest. (TWP)

Evans threatened firings over probe Former Metro chair pressured officials to keep findings private POLITICS Former Metro board chairman Jack Evans threatened the jobs of the agency’s top lawyer and board secretary in an effort to keep secret that the panel’s ethics committee had found he committed a violation, according to confidential agency documents. Evans repeatedly berated Metro General Counsel Patricia Lee and board corporate secretary Jennifer Green Ellison in the spring for their work on the inquiry, to the point that Metro officials were concerned the two might sue the agency for wrongful termination or creating a hostile work environment, the documents and interviews show. Ellison told then-ethics committee Chairman Clarence Crawford in May that Evans told her, “Be careful, you could be next to be fired after Lee, according to handwritten notes taken by Crawford. According to notes, Ellison said the threat could make the “hair on back of your neck stand up. The secrecy effort ultimately failed when Crawford revealed June 17 that the committee found Evans had violated the board’s

NAACP sues to get schools renamed Confederate figure ties in Hanover County face constitutional challenge VIRGINIA A Virginia chapter of the NAACP has filed a federal lawsuit against Hanover County and its school board over two schools that commemorate Confederate leaders, making a novel legal argument that the names should be changed on constitutional grounds. The suit argues that LeeDavis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School violate the rights of African American students by forcing them “to champion a legacy of segregation and oppression in order to participate in school activities.” That violates the First Amendment’s guarantee of being free from “compelled speech” and the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection under the law, the suit alleges. “We believe it’s one of the first times that these well-established legal principles have been used to challenge the issue of Confederate and segregation legacy names in schools,” said Kaitlin Banner, deputy legal director for the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, which filed the suit

on behalf of Hanover County’s NAACP branch. The NAACP is asking the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia to order the schools to be renamed. Tom Harris, a spokesman for Hanover County government, declined to comment on the case. As of 2018, 31 Virginia schools were named for Confederates; according to the lawsuit, 18 had been removed by the end of last year. Hanover school board members voted 5 to 2 last year to keep the Confederate school names after some residents had petitioned for change. Earlier this year, the county board of supervisors declined to reappoint one of the two school board members who voted to change the names. Hanover is a predominantly white, largely rural county north of Richmond where the Sons of Confederate Veterans are active. Lee-Davis High School opened in 1959. Stonewall Jackson, then a junior high school, was named for the Confederate general in 1968. More than 2,500 students attend the two schools; fewer than 10% are African American. The mascot for the high school is the “Confederates,” while the middle schoolers are the “Rebels.” GREGORY S. SCHNEIDER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

nation+world After right-wing rally, officials tout Portland’s progressive history PORTLAND, ORE. With both the left and the right declaring victory following a long-hyped rally that had Portland on edge, it seems the liberal city will continue to be a flashpoint in an increasingly divided country. City officials were mostly relieved that a downtown gathering Saturday of more than 1,000 farright protesters and anti-fascist counter-demonstrators wasn’t as violent as feared. “We were preparing for and planning for a worst-case scenario,” Portland Mayor Ted

Wheeler said. There were 13 arrests, and police seized bear spray, shields, poles and other weapons. But by using barriers and bridge closures — and allowing a large contingent of right-wingers to leave when they asked to — authorities were able to mostly keep the two sides apart. Six minor injuries were reported. Joe Biggs, the organizer of the right-wing gathering that included the Proud Boys, Patriot Prayer and other far-right groups, said they accomplished their goal of drawing attention to black-clad anti-fascist protesters — known as antifa —who showed up to meet them. President Trump tweeted early Saturday that “major

OregonLive he was pleased the rally attracted Trump’s attention. But Eric K. Ward, executive director of the Portland-based Western States Center, said the right-wing rally was a bust. While antifa protesters got a lot of attention, Ward said there were many others who came out to oppose the right-wing groups. Wheeler said at a Saturday evening news conference that Biggs and anyone espousing hate or violence was not welcome. Wheeler tied the demonstrations to “a rising white nationalist movement” and a growing sense of fear in the country. “Portland, being a very progressive community, is always going to be at or near ground zero of this battle.” GILLIAN FLACCUS (AP)

Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., said Friday she would not visit her grandmother in the occupied West Bank despite being granted an Israeli permit on humanitarian grounds, saying Israel’s “oppressive” conditions aimed to humiliate her. The Metropolitan Amvrosios of Kalavryta, a fiery conservative Greek Orthodox bishop known for criticizing, often in intemperate terms, those who he believed acted in a “non-Christian” or “non-Greek” way, including gays, migrants and politicians, resigned Sunday. Economic pillar wavers U.S. consumers — who are shouldering the global economy — show signs of anxiety Leaked memo: ‘No-deal’ Brexit will bring chaos

The U.S. stock market has proved highly volatile as President Trump’s trade war with China has escalated.

said Diane Swonk, chief economist at the accounting firm Grant Thornton. “But there’s an underlying fragility here. Businesses have already been scared into pulling back, and now consumers are also walking on eggshells.” No single bit of negative news is likely to dramatically change the outlook of consumers, whose spending drives about 70% of the U.S. economy. But collectively, it could prompt a cycle of fear that leads consumers to pull back. That’s especially true for the tens of millions of Americans who have painful memories of the Great Recession, which lasted from December 2007 through June 2009. One of the most reliable warning signs arrived Friday, when the University of Michigan’s consumer confidence index fell to a seven-month low, and the index measuring Americans’ outlook for the future dropped even further. It was “the first indication that the U.S. consumer might not save the world economy after all,” Paul Ashworth, chief U.S.

“No, I don’t see a recession. We’re doing pretty darn well, in my judgment. Let’s not be afraid of optimism.” LARRY KUDLOW, President Trump’s top economic adviser, playing down fears of a looming recession after last week’s sharp drop in the markets

economist for Capital Economics, wrote in a note to clients. Historically, consumers have been spooked by a falling stock market and a decline in hiring. The job market has been red-hot, but there are signs of a hiring slowdown. Also, the boost from Trump’s tax cuts may be fading. The tax cut law passed at the end of 2017 added hundreds of dollars to many middle-class families’ take-home pay last year,

Suspect in shooting that left six Philadelphia police wounded officers is charged with attempted murder

according to the Tax Policy Center. But economists say the effects of the tax cut were strongest then, and the stimulus diminishes as Americans adjust to the new norm. Consumer spending could also prove fragile since so much of it is reliant on debt. American households have again taken on large debt loads to fuel consumption, with consumer debt hitting $13.9 trillion in the spring, more than a trillion dollars above the prior peak, reached just before the 2008 financial crisis. The cloud of uncertainty has some consumers questioning when they should start making changes, and to what degree. “My situation right now is good,” said Andrea Maxand, who works as a paralegal in Seattle while studying for a graduate degree in history. “But I’m anxious. I’ve been watching the rumblings of the trade war. This week, when the stock market tumbled, I said, ‘Yup, it’s time to start budgeting.’” R ACHEL SIEGEL, ABHA BHAT TAR AI AND HEATHER LONG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

RICHARD DREW (AP)

ECONOMY American consumers are increasingly propping up the global economy, an enduring source of strength that is helping keep the United States out of recession and drawing a sharp contrast with the rest of the world. But as a number of signs point to a possible downturn in the U.S., economists are growing more skeptical that consumers will continue to open up their wallets as freely. A failure to do so could hasten the arrival of the first U.S. recession in a decade. Low unemployment, rising wages and easy credit have given consumers the confidence and ability to spend in recent months. That has proved crucial as spending by U.S. businesses has declined, U.S. manufacturing has fallen into a funk, and the economies of many other large countries, including Germany, have begun to shrink. The strength of the consumer has convinced many business leaders that the U.S. economy won’t go into recession anytime soon, and it is the basis for optimism at the White House that it will remain strong into the 2020 election. Yet a number of developments could shift this view. The U.S. stock market, which saw its largest one-day decline of the year Wednesday, has proved highly volatile as President Trump’s trade war with China has escalated. Bond markets, which have a strong track record of predicting recessions, are flashing warning signs. And the trade war itself, which for the most part hasn’t hit consumers directly, will begin to do so more forcefully in the fall as tariffs rise on consumer staples, including some food and clothing products. “The consumer is playing Atlas, shouldering the economy,”

UNITED KINGDOM Secret British government documents have warned of serious disruptions across the country in the event that the U.K. leaves the European Union without a trade deal on Oct. 31, according to a report. The Sunday Times newspaper published what it said was what the British government expects in the case of a sudden, “no-deal” Brexit. Among the most serious: “significant” disruptions to the supply of drugs and medicine, a decrease in the availability of fresh food and even potential fresh water shortages due to possible interruptions of imported water treatment chemicals. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he is ready to leave the EU regardless of whether he is able to renegotiate the Brexit deal struck by his predecessor, Theresa May. His own officials, however, have warned that with a no-deal Brexit, the sharing of law enforcement data and the health of Britain’s crucial financial services industry could be in jeopardy after Oct. 31. The documents also quote officials as warning that up to 85% of all trucks wouldn’t be ready for French customs at the critical English Channel crossing that day, causing lines that could stretch out for days. Some 75% of all drugs coming into Britain arrive via that crossing, the memos warned, “making them particularly vulnerable to severe delays.” RAPHAEL SATTER (AP)

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN At least 63 people were killed when a suicide bomber linked to the Islamic State blew himself up in a crowded wedding hall in the Afghan capital late Saturday night, one of the most devastating attacks on civilians in years of conflict and terror.

The local affiliate of the Islamic State claimed responsibility in a statement posted online with an image of a young man with a rifle. The extremist Sunni militia described the man as a Pakistani named Abu Asim who had attacked a gathering of “rejecter polytheists,” as the group describes followers of Shiite Islam. The Interior Ministry said Sunday that at least 63 had been killed and more than 180 wounded. City hospitals were

‘Greenland is not for sale’ Reports of Trump’s interest in acquiring island spark backlash POLITICS President Trump has faced a fierce European backlash to his reported interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark, as some lawmakers compared the idea to colonialism, while officials on the island said they welcome investment but not a new owner. “Of course, Greenland is not for sale,” Greenland’s government said in a statement, echoing earlier remarks by Greenland’s foreign minister, Ane Lone Bagger. In its statement, the government said it viewed the reports “as an expression of greater interest in investing in our country and the possibilities we offer.” In Denmark, which counts the autonomous Greenland as part of its territory, the reaction to Trump’s interest in the strategically located island was far less diplomatic, with some politicians characterizing the idea as a joke. Danish politicians from across the spectrum reacted with bewilderment, ridicule and outright anger over what they perceived to be a deeply inappropriate suggestion. “The whole idea that another country could buy Greenland — like it should be a colony — is so strange to us,” said Michael Aastrup Jensen, a member of the Danish parliament with the center-right Venstre party. Another member of his party, former Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, chimed

Bombing in Kabul leaves over 60 dead

The bride and groom survived the blast but lost family members, including 14 on the bride’s side. The groom, a tailor named Mirwais Elmi, told Kabul’s ToloNews TV that his family was in shock and would never recover. A spokesman for the Taliban insurgents, Sohail Shaheen, denied any connection to the bombing in a tweet Sunday. He called it a “brutal act” and said the group “condemns it in the strongest terms.” The Taliban is in peace negotiations with U.S. officials, who have said they expect to reach a deal soon that would lead to most U.S. troops leaving the country.

Melting ice could uncover offshore oil resources. But Greenland has also long been of interest to past American administrations because of its location between the Arctic and

‘A large real estate deal’ President Trump said Sunday that the idea of buying Greenland from Denmark came up within his administration and that it’s essentially “a large real estate deal.” In remarks to reporters, Trump cast the idea as a strategic move by the U.S. but not a top priority for his administration. Trump also suggested that Greenland is an economic burden for Denmark. (AP)

in Greenland comes ahead of his planned visit to the Danish capital of Copenhagen next month. Danes are worried this will derail the agenda of Trump’s trip. “It will suck the oxygen out of the room and it will take over everything,” said Jon RahbekClemmensen, a professor at the Institute for Military Operations at the Royal Danish Defense College. Trump is not the first U.S. president to consider such an offer — the Truman administration reportedly offered Denmark $100 million to purchase Greenland after World War II. Still, Danes appeared shocked on Friday that the same suggestion could still come up in 2019. RICK NOACK AND CLAIRE PARKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

New York City medical examiner rules financier Jeffrey Epstein died of suicide by hanging

RELIGION The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has issued a warning to members that coffee is prohibited no matter how fancy the name, that vaping is banned and that marijuana is outlawed unless prescribed by “competent” doctors. The new guidance in the August issue of a church youth magazine does not include fundamental changes to the religion’s strict health code, but the clarifications are significant and seem to reflect growing concern about young Latter-day Saints’ adherence to the rules. The article says it aims to clear up issues that could be confusing for young people within the religion’s “Word of Wisdom,” a set of rules about what foods and drinks are good for members and what substances they should avoid. The rules prohibit alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs and coffee and tea. They are based on what church members believe was a revelation from God to founder Joseph Smith in 1833. The new instructions about coffee make clear that there’s no gray area allowing coffeeinfused drinks, and allude to the wide variety that could tempt members of the faith. The passage about marijuana seems to underscore the faith’s desire to carve out a space to allow some members to use medical marijuana, while reiterating that recreational use is prohibited. He’s our closer, but we got to get him right.” The manager isn’t sure how he’ll close games in the meantime. The Nationals want him to keep throwing and keep his left arm in shape, but they’re making it a priority for him to minimize stress over the next 10 days. Doolittle, 32, leads the league in games finished (49) and was on pace for a career-high 68 appearances, topping the 61 he made for the Athletics in 2014. When pressed on his usage of Doolittle — including three backto-back appearances since Aug. 1 — Martinez defended his choices. “Doolittle’s the closer, he’s the closer of this team,” Martinez said. “We’ve said that before, and this is based on conversations with Doo. A TRUSTED CHOICE

Wizards focusing on sports science WIZARDS Even though All-Star shooting guard Bradley Beal has not missed a game in two seasons, the Wizards have tried to protect him by limiting his work in practice and shootarounds. The club’s new focus on sports science with the hires of Dr. Daniel Medina and Mark Simpson and the creation of the Athlete Care and Performance department should intensify the effort to monitor players’ workloads. “I think we did a good job in the past. I just think there are opportunities to add to that and certainly that’s what Danny’s expertise and Mark’s expertise will blend very well,” general manager Tommy Sheppard said. Beal, who led the NBA with 36.9 minutes per game last season, excelled as the Wizards’ No. 1 option. He’s the first player in franchise history to post a season average of at least 25 points, five assists and five rebounds. But Beal has logged 6,005 minutes over the past two years. Wizards guard Bradley Beal led the NBA with an average of 36.9 minutes per game last season.

Ted Leonsis, the chairman and chief executive of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, grew fascinated with the maintenance of European football players who play 90-minute matches. In July, Leonsis named Medina, who has a background in soccer, as Monumental Basketball’s chief of athlete care and performance. The Wizards will play 13 sets of back-to-back games this season, with four in a grueling month of March alone. But, Sheppard said, “It’s a bigger picture than just schedule. It’s the practices and the amount of work done in practices. Giving a lot more emphasis on recovery and the ability to have active recovery.”

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘American Factory’ Wednesday on Netflix

HBO’s slapdash sermon ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ delivers a hit-or-miss caricature of megachurch culture

TV REVIEW When it comes to his HBO comedies, creator and actor Danny McBride always aims for the fish in a barrel, having previously portrayed such easy targets as a washed-up pro baseball player (“Eastbound & Down”) and a criminally opportunistic school administrator (“Vice Principals”). McBride likes characters who mask their insecurities with a vain hypermasculinity. It only figures that he would eventually get around to playing an evangelical pastor. Although “The Righteous Gemstones” does indeed partake in some rather low-hanging fruit as it mocks the megachurch milieu, it occasionally hints at

some stronger potential. But the show mostly comes off as an unfinished gumbo of broad stereotypes, violent occurrences and snaky retributions among a family whose holiest instincts were long ago subsumed by their contempt for one another. Sunday’s premiere briefly sketched the extent of the Gemstone family’s empire — an eponymous megachurch headed by Eli (John Goodman), who has global ambitions for expanding his flock. McBride plays Eli’s eldest child, Jesse, a hypocritical show-minister who preaches glitter and glory on Sunday mornings and then sins the rest of his waking hours. Jesse’s sister, Judy (Edi

Keeping the faith Although “The Righteous Gemstones” gets off to a rough start, better episodes eventually follow. One flashes back 30 years and introduces viewers to Eli Gemstone’s late wife, Aimee-Leigh (Jennifer Nettles), who found childhood success as half of a gospel-singing duo with her fame-hungry brother, Baby Billy (Walton Goggins). H.S.

Patterson) is a brat who feels she’s entitled to a larger role in church leadership. Younger brother Kelvin (Adam Devine) also contradicts Christian values, but he seems to be the Gemstone with the firmest faith in the message.

The show reminds one of how “Vice Principals” became a much more promising show whenever it stopped long enough to take a satirical bite out of the absurdities in public education. “Gemstones” has a similar shrewd eye for the rapacious religiosity of the evangelical realm: a satellite church in the old Sears space in a comatose shopping mall; the family’s faux-classy display of mansions and cars; the charitable impulses that are really just a means to convert the Third World. Yet, one might hope for “The Righteous Gemstones” to land a cleaner punch. Nobody comes to church hoping to hear a wishywashy sermon. HANK STUEVER

Contestants feel the heat on the Netflix reality competition “Blown Away.”

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

Breaking the mold: Netflix crafts a hit with ‘Blown Away’ glassblowing.” That’s not just empty hype. TV’s reality competitions have featured potentially great British bakers, would-be fashion designers … but not a single contestant who breathes into a blowpipe to inflate molten glass into a bubbly blob for shaping and sculpting. And it turns out that the glassblowers on “Blown Away,” which released its 10 episodes last month on Netflix, are perhaps the most impressive reality show contestants in the history of reality shows. First off, the 10 contestants face tremendous hardships as they vie for the horriblesounding title of “Best in Blow” and a prize package valued at a mildly impressive $60,000. They drip sweat as they toil in “North America’s biggest hot shop” — and hot it is! The furnaces that turn sand, limestone and soda ash into liquid glass can hit 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. One contestant actually cuts off the bottom half of his

pants to cool off. Glass being glass, they have to be prepared for disasters. “Anything can go wrong at any time,” one contestant notes. The end result could be a beautiful, ephemeral creation — like the elegant, Venetianstyle taco holders made by nononsense glassblower Deborah. Or the contestant might be left with a pile of broken glass. In the first challenge, 23-yearold Kevin’s spear cracks. “The piece is worthless,” he says, impulsively knocking it on the ground, where it shatters. He’s the first to be sent home, but is not bitter: “What I’m going to take from this competition is the humbleness that comes with glass.” That kind of philosophical self-reflection is as much a part of the show as is the pain and joy of creating glasswork. And all this tension and emotion comes in tightly edited half-hour episodes. There’s no bloat, no padding. That’s why I was, to borrow one of the many, many glass-related puns from host Nick Uhas, blown away by “Blown Away.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse
