A wary woman in southern Germany alerted police after a man buzzed at the door and asked for permission to search her balcony for his false teeth. Police in Rheinfelden reported Thursday that questioning of the 56-year-old man showed that his unusual request was sincere. He had visited a friend living a few floors above the woman and lost his dentures while sitting on the friend’s balcony. (AP)

Police in Bellevue, Wash., arrested a man this week after he allegedly rammed his Honda multiple times into two luxury vehicles parked at a car dealership, wrecking a Bentley and a RollsRoyce worth a total of more than $500,000. The 32-year-old suspect told police he had not slept in about three days and may have been having a panic attack. The dealership owner said the cars would likely be a total loss. (AP)

A 10-year-old in Bismarck, N.D., wanted to take a joyride. She didn’t just slip behind the wheel of a parent’s car, police said — she took a man’s car keys, wallet and iPhone from a cubbyhole at the YMCA and stole his 2009 Pontiac. She said she tossed the phone and wallet out a window and picked up four friends. The fun ended Monday, KFYR-TV reported, when the car hit a curb. Police found the preteens trying to change a tire. Your (partial) eclipse guide D.C. may not be in the path of totality, but the view will still be great

with an expanding piece bitten out of it until the eclipse’s peak. Then, the sun (or cookie) will return to form.

REGION The solar eclipse is coming Monday, and the hype is building. But how awesome your viewing experience is will depend on whether you are treated to a total solar eclipse or a partial solar eclipse. In the D.C. area, we will see a partial solar eclipse and, at peak, a light shadow of the moon will cover 81 percent of the sun. What this means is that our experience will be partly awesome. It will be cool and worth checking out, but not a mindblowing, once-in-a-lifetime kind of moment. For the totally awesome, unforgettable experience, you must travel to the path of totality, a narrow stripe running from Oregon to South Carolina. But it’s going to cost you. Assuming you haven’t already booked your travel into the path of totality, don’t want to spend the money or simply don’t want to deal with hordes of people converging there, here’s a short set of questions and answers to guide you through what you’ll be able to see in Washington:

Will there be eclipse viewing parties in Washington? Yes. Speaking of Science’s Sarah Kaplan writes: If you’re here in Washington on Aug. 21, head to the National Air and Space Museum. The Smithsonian will have solar telescopes set up for viewing the event. You can also snag a pair of eclipse-viewing glasses at the museum, or learn to build a pinhole camera that will let you safely observe the sun. Eclipse enthusiasts can also head to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly for similar programming.

AP

Monday’s eclipse will start just after 1:17 p.m. in D.C. and last until 4:01 p.m.

Will the temperature change? You may notice a slight drop in temperature as the eclipse approaches its peak. How will the sun appear in D.C. as the eclipse is underway? The sun will appear like a cookie

Is the eclipse safe to watch with my kids? Absolutely, as long as everyone is equipped with approved eclipse viewing glasses. It will be a fantastic science lesson in real time. How’s the forecast looking for Monday in D.C.? Eclipse Monday looks solid so far with mostly sunny skies (except for eclipse). JASON SAMENOW (THE WASHINGTON POST)

We all know you need to wear special glasses to watch the eclipse. Not only is it harmful to your eyes to stare at the sun, but you really won’t be able to see anything if you don’t have the glasses to filter out most of the sunlight. Here are some places to check. (TWP) 7-Eleven The convenience store is selling approved glasses nationwide, although it’s likely that some of the stores have run out. Fortunately — at least in the big cities — you can’t throw a stone without hitting a 7-Eleven, so you’ll have plenty of backups.

Air and Space Museum and Udvar-Hazy Center Each of these locations is giving away a limited number per day. They open at 10 a.m., and rumor has it the limit per visitor is one. When you arrive, head straight to the visitor center to see if they still have some for the day.

National Zoo The zoo will be giving away glasses at its eclipse event Monday.

Will it turn dark in the Washington area? “If you are really paying attention, it will be a bit darker, but not much more than a cloud passing over the sun,” says NASA scientist Michael Kirk. The massive

difference between areas witnessing a partial and total solar eclipse is that the shadow passing over partial eclipse areas, known as the penumbra, is much lighter. Over the path of totality, a much darker shadow passes over, known as the umbra, and it turns almost as dark as night.

When does the eclipse in D.C. begin, peak and end? On Monday, a light shadow of the moon will start to cover the sun just after 1:17 p.m. and will peak just after 2:42 p.m. at 81 percent coverage. Then, the amount of sun covered will start to diminish and, just after 4:01 p.m., it will be over.

local GOP candidate for Va. governor tries to keep focus on state issues VIRGINIA Republican Ed Gillespie has been fighting to keep the focus of his campaign for Virginia governor on state issues and away from President Trump. That task grew more challenging this week, after Trump defended some of the white nationalists who marched in Charlottesville, Va., and bashed efforts to remove Confederate statues — directly injecting national politics into the Virginia governor’s race. Numerous Republicans, including at least six U.S. senators, Virginia Reps. Barbara Comstock and Scott Taylor and neighboring Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, criticized Trump after he blamed “both sides” for violence in Charlottesville that resulted in

one death and multiple injuries. Gillespie, a longtime GOP operative and former Republican National Committee chairman, repeatedly said this week that there’s no moral equivalence between white nationalists and the counter-protesters who clashed with them in Charlottesville. The GOP candidate tweeted that the views of white supremacists and neo-Nazis in Charlottesville “have no redeeming value whatsoever. Simple as that” — without mentioning the president. While Trump is highly unpopular in Virginia, and lost the state by 5 points to Hillary Clinton, Gillespie needs support from some Trump voters in November if he is to beat Democrat Ralph Northam, who has a slight lead on Gillespie in recent polls. “Gillespie seems to be faced with one hurdle after another that Trump is actually placing in front of him in Virginia,” said

Gillespie walks Trump tightrope

Ed Gillespie wants to distance himself from Trump, but doesn’t want to alienate his supporters.

Bob Holsworth, a retired Virginia Commonwealth University professor and longtime observer of state politics. “In each of these hurdles, he is trying not to directly criticize Trump, but to significantly distance himself in some fashion from Trump. That’s quite a tightrope to walk.” Northam, a nd groups

supporting him, have seized on Gillespie’s “silence” about Trump. “It’s disappointing to see that my opponent won’t stand up to the president when he’s so clearly been wrong,” said Northam, the state’s lieutenant governor. “The leader of our country needs to stand up to the white supremacists and say, ‘No more, stop it, go home and go back.’ Ed Gillespie needs to tell President Trump the same thing.” One Republican operative unaffiliated with the Gillespie campaign said it would be a mistake for the candidate to talk about Trump. “I don’t think Ed is going to play the game of commenting on what Trump says or doesn’t say because if he does, my God, that’s the only thing he’ll answer for between now and the election,” said the operative, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to talk freely about strategy. Report: D.C. lost track of real estate Audit finds millions in unpaid rent, potentially unnecessary leases THE DISTRICT The agency that manages the District government’s property has failed to collect millions of dollars in rent and struck a financially questionable deal with a private real estate broker to lease space that may not be needed, according to a new inspector general’s audit. The audit, released Thursday by D.C. Inspector General Daniel W. Lucas, found that the city’s Department of General Services has essentially lost track of government-owned real estate in the nation’s capital and is spending nearly $180 million per year leasing additional buildings. Lucas also found that the department did not properly oversee its contract with the commercial real estate broker hired to negotiate those leases, paying the company large fees that were

questionable and in some cases overpaying outright. Lucas identified roughly $633,000 that the broker, international firm Savills Studley Inc., owed the city. The audit is another blow to the reputation and morale of the District’s property-management agency, which was thrown into turmoil last summer with the abrupt resignation of its thendirector, retired Rear Adm. Christopher Weaver. When it comes to the department’s duties as a landlord, Lucas also found mismanagement, citing $4.85 million in rent city officials had failed to collect. Department officials asserted in a written response to the audit that their records were faulty and that the true amount of unpaid rent was closer to $3 million. They also said they did not need to put the renewal of the broker’s contract out for bid because they selected the broker from a list of federally approved vendors. and other officials cut a ribbon on a $39 million upgrade. DCPS, which educates a little more than half of the city’s 90,000 public schoolchildren, surpassed the performance of charter schools in English language arts and math by small margins. The charter schools also made gains, now boasting 10 straight years of rising scores. The computerized Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers grades students on a 5-point scale in English language arts and math. Students take the test in grades three through eight and once in high school. THE DISTRICT Fewer than a third of public school students in the District are considered “college and career ready” in math and English language arts, according to test scores released Thursday that showed gains in both subjects, particularly in the traditional public schools. The share of students who met the benchmark rose 4 points in English language arts to 31 percent and 2 points in math to 27 percent. Still, achievement gaps persisted and in some cases widened. In D.C. Public Schools, more than 50 percentage points separate the performance of students in Ward 3, encompassing affluent Northwest neighborhoods, from those in Ward 7, where the school population is largely poor and black. City officials celebrated overall improvements while noting that there is work to be done. “We know that none of these things have happened by accident: 10 years of robust commitment to changing our schools, from buildings like we see here, to investments in our teachers and their professional development, to curriculum that reflects what our children need to be successful in college and career,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said Thursday as she stood in the refurbished library of Watkins Elementary School on Capitol Hill. Trump’s now the alienator POLITICS President Trump finds himself more isolated than ever from his own party, world leaders and the business community that once cautiously embraced him — a fissure that was growing for weeks but turned into a chasm following his response to the racist violence in Charlottesville. Trump had to disband two corporate advisory councils Wednesday after numerous chief executives resigned from the panels while criticizing him for a day earlier blaming both white supremacists and counter-protesters for the melees that led to the death of a 32-year-old woman. Republicans continue to distance themselves as they call on him to more forcefully condemn the racist groups that gathered for the “Unite the Right” rally. And foreign officials lined up to make it clear that they strongly disagree with his view of the protests. Trump had already stoked tensions in recent weeks as he repeatedly attacked congressional GOP leaders for his stalled legislative agenda, and alarmed allies at home and abroad with threats of military force against North Korea and Venezuela. But h is re act ion to t he

Charlottesville violence has created deep uncertainty about whether he can lead his party and focus on urgent tasks this fall, including avoiding a government debt default and moving forward on the tax cuts he has promised. “This has done irreparable damage in some ways,” said Joshua Holmes, a former aide to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who remains close to him. “I don’t know of any Republican who is comfortable with where we’re at right now based on the president’s comments.” On Thursday, Trump tried to focus the debate on whether Confederate statues should be removed from cities across the country, an issue that is less controversial than his reaction to Charlottesville, but still divisive. After offering shifting reactions Saturday and Monday on the violent rally, he reverted Tuesday to his original view — that there were “many sides” in the conflict between white nationalists, neoNazis and KKK supporters and counter-protesters. In a heated news conference, he again condemned white supremacists but defended some “fine people” who gathered at their rally, and questioned why the “alt-left” had not been similarly criticized for the violent confrontations. Among Republicans in Washington, the spectacle seemed to confirm a growing feeling that

His stance on violence in Charlottesville drives away more supporters

Trump’s response to recent violence in Charlottesville, Va., has isolated him.

Tweets rip senators President Trump attacked two Republican senators Thursday for their recent criticisms of his divisive governing style and response to the violence in Charlottesville, Va. In a morning tweetstorm, Trump lambasted Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Jeff Flake of Arizona, calling Graham “publicity-seeking” and Flake “toxic,” and endorsing a primary challenger to Flake in his re-election bid next year. Graham responded with a statement: “For the sake of our Nation — as our President — please fix this. History is watching us all.” (TWP)

Trump’s presidency is unlikely to ever get back on track, leaving the party’s leadership in Congress feeling “demoralized,” according to one Republican with close ties to the party’s leadership. Said one Republican operative who is in frequent touch with the White House: “He’s now alienated a majority of rank-and-file members in the House and Senate.” Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., said, “Having to answer questions on these other matters is unhelpful and is distracting, frustrating, and it’s exhausting. It’s exhausting to the American people, too.” ABBY PHILLIP (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS President Trump on Thursday mourned the loss of “beautiful statues and monuments” in the wake of the violent clashes in Charlottesville, Va., during a white supremacist demonstration protesting the planned removal of a statue, above, depicting Confederate military commander Robert E. Lee. Trump’s string of morning tweets made clear the president was not willing to back down over his claims Tuesday that some of the demonstrators had legitimate grievances over the loss of Southern “history.” “The beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced,” Trump tweeted. On Tuesday and again on Thursday, Trump argued that Lee and fellow Confederate general Stonewall Jackson, who commanded Southern forces in the Civil War to secede from the U.S., are important and admired historical figures in the South. He said they could be equated to Founding Fathers George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who owned slaves and thus could potentially be subject to modern-day backlash. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., announced late Wednesday that he intends to introduce legislation calling for the removal of at least a dozen statues of Confederate soldiers and politicians located inside the U.S. Capitol. COURTS A settlement was announced Thursday in a landmark lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union against two psychologists involved in designing the CIA’s harsh interrogation program used in the war on terror. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. ACLU attorneys called it a historic victory, saying this is the first time the CIA or its private contractors had been held accountable for torturing suspects in the war on terror. The ACLU filed the lawsuit

It sought unspecified monetary damages from the psychologists, James Mitchell and John “Bruce” Jessen, who were under contract with the federal government following the Sept. 11 terror attacks. The lawsuit claimed the psychologists designed, implemented and personally administered an experimental torture program. The techniques they developed included slamming the three men into walls, stuffing them inside coffin-like boxes and exposing them to extreme temperatures, the ACLU said. Salim and Ben Soud were subjected to waterboarding, daily beatings and sleep deprivation while inside CIA secret prisons. Salim, a Tanzanian, and Ben Soud, a Libyan, were later released after officials determined they posed no threat. James T. Smith, lead attorney for the psychologists, said his clients’ interrogations were authorized by the government. The ACLU issued a statement from the surviving plaintiffs: “We were able to tell the world about horrific torture, the CIA had to release secret records, and the psychologists and high-level CIA officials were forced to answer our lawyer’s questions,” the statement said.

Saudi Arabia reopens Qatar border for hajj pilgrims, first signs of thaw in diplomatic crisis

NATIONAL SECURITY America’s diplomatic and defense chiefs sought Thursday to reinforce the threat of possible U.S. military action against North Korea after President Trump’s top strategist essentially called the commander in chief’s warnings a bluff. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stressed after security talks with close ally Japan that the U.S. seeks a peaceful solution to the standoff over North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. But he said a U.S.-led campaign of economic pressure and diplomacy needs to be backed by potential military consequences. Washington is “prepared militarily” to respond, if necessary, he said. Tillerson spoke after he and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis held annual security talks with Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera and Foreign Minister Taro Kono at the State Department. Much of the discussion focused on North Korea, which also poses a threat to Japan. Neither Tillerson nor Mattis responded directly to strategist Steve Bannon’s argument in an interview published Wednesday that there’s no military solution to the North Korean threat. But both Cabinet members sought to rebut the claim. “In close collaboration with our allies, there are strong military consequences if [North Korea] initiates hostilities,” Mattis said. The van jumped a curb and sped through a busy pedestrian zone, mowing down tourists and residents.

Hours after an apparent terrorist attack in Barcelona, President Trump on Thursday recycled a largely discredited internet myth that he promoted on the campaign trail as a way to call attention to what he has called “radical Islamic terrorism.” Trump on Twitter instructed his 36 million followers to look to the example of Gen. John J. Pershing, who is said, in stories circulating online, to have dipped bullets in pigs’ blood to execute Islamic terrorists in the Philippines whose religion forbid contact with the animals. The story has been found to be unsubstantiated by numerous factcheckers in the media. (TWP)

BARCELONA, SPAIN A van veered onto a sidewalk and sped down a busy pedestrian zone Thursday in the picturesque Las Ramblas district of Barcelona, swerving from side to side as it mowed down tourists and residents and turned the popular European vacation spot into a killing zone. Thirteen people were killed and 100 were injured, 15 of them seriously, in what authorities called a terror attack. Victims were left sprawled in the street as others fled in panic, some carrying young children in their arms. “It was clearly a terror attack, intended to kill as many people as possible,” Josep Lluis Trapero, a senior police official, told a news conference late Thursday. The Islamic State claimed responsibility, saying in a statement via its Amaq news agency that the attack was carried out in response to the extremist group’s calls for its followers to target countries participating in the coalition to drive it from Syria and Iraq. After the attack, Las Ramblas went into lockdown. Swarms of police brandishing handguns and automatic weapons launched a manhunt in the downtown district, ordering stores and cafes and public transport to shut down. Several hours later, authorities reported two arrests, of a Spanish national from Melilla (a Spanish-run enclave in North Africa) and of a Moroccan, but Trapero said neither of them was the driver of the van. The arrests took place in the northern Catalan town of Ripoll and in Alcanar, the site of a gas explosion at a house Wednesday night. Police were investigating a possible link to Thursday’s attack. commuter trains. Las Ramblas is a wide avenue of stalls and shops that cuts through the center of Barcelona and is one of the city’s top tourist destinations. It features a pedestrian-only walkway in the center, while cars can travel on

either side. A taxi driver who witnessed Thursday’s attack, Oscar Cano, said the white van suddenly jumped the curb and sped down the central pedestrian area for about 500 yards, veering from side to side as it targeted people. “I heard a lot of people screaming and then I saw the van going down the boulevard,” another witness, Miguel Angel Rizo, said. “You could see all the bodies lying through Las Ramblas. It was brutal.” Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau announced a minute of silence to be held Friday in the city’s main square, “to show that we are not scared.” The regional government announced three days of mourning. President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter: “The United States condemns the terror attack in Barcelona, Spain, and will do whatever is necessary to help. Be tough & strong, we love you!” BARRY HATTON AND JOSEPH WILSON (AP)

nation+world HONG KONG A Hong Kong court sent young activist Joshua Wong and two other student leaders to prison Thursday for their roles three years ago in pro-democracy protests, the latest sign that tolerance for dissent is waning in the Chineseruled former British colony. The High Court overturned a verdict that let Wong, Nathan Law and Alex Chow avoid prison, agreeing with prosecutors that the original punishment for leading an unlawful assembly that sparked the protests was too light. The three were immediately

taken to serve their sentences of up to eight months, which have the added consequence of blocking each of them from seeking public office for five years. After the verdict, Wong tweeted: “You can lock up our bodies, but not our minds! We want democracy in Hong Kong. And we will not give up.” The three were found guilty last year of leading or encouraging an illegal 2014 rally that kicked off the “Umbrella Movement” protests. Youthful activists brought major thoroughfares to a standstill for 11 weeks to protest

Beijing’s plan to restrict elections in the semi-autonomous region. Wong and Law were originally given community service and Chow had received a suspended three-week prison sentence. A three-judge panel Thursday decided to stiffen those sentences at the justice secretary’s request. Under the “one country, two systems” format that took effect after the 1997 handover from Britain, Beijing promised to let the city keep civil rights like freedom of speech and protest unknown in mainland China. PACKERS’ STRATEGY

Rodgers still sitting out preseason

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Redskins vying for jobs THE ORDER OF THE DEPTH CHART IS THE BIGGEST PUZZLE for the Redskins as they prepare to host the Packers for a pre-

season game at FedEx Field on Saturday (7:30, CSN). The biggest battle for a starting job is at inside linebacker, but coach Jay Gruden will spend most of his time evaluating reserves. The Redskins have more depth than in past years, so making the final 53-man roster Sept. 2 has gotten tougher. That means performing well in the preseason is vital for

Three players are competing for two spots, and Will Compton has an edge because he calls defensive signals. The Redskins are still trying different combinations, and coach Jay Gruden said he’ll start Zach Brown and Foster against the Packers. Both played very well in the preseason opener at Baltimore, but Washington probably didn’t sign Brown from Buffalo just for depth. Foster is still the starter on paper, but he has seemed like a stopgap solution since he was signed during the 2015 season. In his seventh season, Foster still has upside as a run defender.

As the No. 3 corner and top nickel back, Fuller could set himself up to start next year if Bashaud Breeland, who becomes a free agent in 2018, doesn’t earn a new deal. Coaches have been impressed with Fuller’s improvement since last year, when offseason surgery slowed his development as a rookie but he still started six games. He’s known as a cerebral player, which is perfect for a slot corner. Fuller was a little uneven against Baltimore, but he should improve as the season goes on. The big question is whether he can cover the league’s best receivers.

Gruden can’t stop praising Washington’s fifth-round pick, saying Sprinkle will have a long career. So if the Redskins carry four tight ends, that could include Jordan Reed, Vernon Davis, Niles Paul and Sprinkle, which would leave out Derek Carrier. But Gruden has good things to say about Carrier, too, so Sprinkle needs a strong camp to avoid the practice squad. At 6 feet 5 and 252 pounds, Sprinkle is like a larger Don Warren, who blocked next to the famed “Hogs.” Sprinkle has good hands, too, so he could be a nice safety valve in the red zone for Kirk Cousins.

Consider this Jones’ last chance to prove he’s worth keeping. Last year’s Week 1 starter was benched after he fumbled three times in seven games. He was considered a long shot to make this year’s roster entering camp, and finishing with -1 yard on three carries against Baltimore was embarrassing. The backup offensive line gave him no holes, but Jones should have pushed Ravens reserves for yardage. A good effort against Green Bay might get him a temporary stay, but it could also interest another team into signing the former third-round pick.

The undrafted free agent was thought to be an extra body entering camp. But after a solid debut versus Baltimore, the diminutive grandson of Bob Marley is earning a second look. Marley (5 feet 8, 200 pounds) had four tackles including a sack in 38 snaps versus the Ravens, and he showed excellent instincts and speed. The problem is that Marley is fourth on the depth chart, and fellow rookie Josh Harvey-Clemons played well in Baltimore, too. Small players can produce, but using one at inside linebacker is risky. The practice squad is a possibility for Marley, too.

potential second- or third-stringers. Expect starters to play into the second quarter. Here are five players to watch.

Last season, the Packers made an early strategic decision. Aaron Rodgers played in just one preseason game, for a total of two series. The result when the games counted? The slowest start to a season in Rodgers’ career. Through the first two weeks of 2016, he ranked 33rd out of 34 passers graded by Pro Football Focus. This year the Packers appear to be sticking with last season’s blueprint. Coach Mike McCarthy has said nothing definitive, but all signs point to Rodgers sitting out a second straight preseason game Saturday at the Redskins. In practices this week, Rodgers has worked mostly with the scout team while his backups took reps with the first-team offense. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Wow, Brad Pitt and George Clooney look so different in this hillbilly version of “Ocean’s.”

ALSO OPENING

Criminally amusing Soderbergh returns with ‘Logan Lucky,’ a down-home spin on ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ FILM REVIEW Wasn’t it just yesterday that Steven Soderbergh was announcing his retirement from filmmaking? Those of us who didn’t buy it are now vindicated with the return of American cinema’s most dependably fluent yeoman. “Logan Lucky” turns out to be an apt return for Soderbergh, conveying his gift for the fleet directness of almost offhand wit but also betraying the glib superficiality of his least memorable work. As “Logan Lucky” opens, Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) is fixing a car with the help of his adorable young daughter Sadie (Farrah Mackenzie). Jimmy, a West Virginia resident who lost his job working construction at a NASCAR stadium in Charlotte,

N.C., learns his ex-wife (Katie Holmes) is considering a move out of state, so he embarks on a plan that involves both revenge and monetary reward. The question is whether Jimmy’s scheme will run afoul of the Logan family curse, laid out in a drawling expository speech by his brother Clyde (Adam Driver), a bartender and military veteran who lost a lower arm while serving overseas. As Jimmy plans what he’s certain will be a surefire heist, he assembles a ragtag group of friends and relatives: Clyde and Jimmy’s sister Mellie (Riley Keough); an incarcerated thief named Joe Bang (Daniel Craig); and Bang’s own dubious siblings, Sam and Fish (Brian Gleeson and Jack Quaid). What

‘Logan Lucky’ (PG-13, 119 min.) DIRECTOR: Steven Soderbergh STARS: Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Katie Holmes IN A NUTSHELL: Two brothers recruit their oddball family and friends to pull off a heist during a NASCAR race in North Carolina.

ensues is a playful, down-home take on “Ocean’s Eleven” that relies less on sleek gadgetry and sophisticated repartee than on cramped ductwork and dimwitted, aw-shucks patois. Those schematics aside, the pleasures of watching “Logan Lucky” exist in direct proportion

to the hilarity one finds in an ensemble of actors affecting Southern accents to play a motley assortment of yokels, ne’erdo-wells and salts of the earth. Alternately patronizing and pandering, the movie walks an uneasy line between condescension and concern-trolling. “Logan Lucky” plays like a down-market homage to brotherly devotion and harebrained ambition that simultaneously evokes grim present-day realities and breezily ignores them. As a hotly anticipated comeback, it feels like a slightly dippy, ultimately disposable warm-up of a director whose brains, chops and judicious taste we need more than ever. Bonnie Tyler to sing ‘Total Eclipse’ during total eclipse

Bonnie Tyler will sing her 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” as Monday’s total solar eclipse happens. The Welsh singer will be backed on the power ballad by Joe Jonas’ band DNCE for a performance aboard the Royal Caribbean ship Oasis of the Seas, as part of its “Total Eclipse Cruise.” The ship leaves from Florida on Sunday and will sail toward St. Maarten on Monday, when the moon passes in front of the sun. TRANS-RADIAL PICTURES

‘Patti Cake$’ R, 109 min.

Australian actress Danielle Macdonald is the breakout star of “Patti Cake$,” an endearing feature about a 23-year-old aspiring emcee from working-class New Jersey. The structure of “Patti Cake$” is familiar to anyone who’s seen a film about a kid from the sticks longing for her first big break, but it never feels cliche or mechanical. “Patti Cake$” is a celebration of art, enterprise and self-invention that’s as tough as it is touching. A.H.

‘Good Time’ R, 100 min.

In the lowlife picaresque “Good Time,” Robert Pattinson delivers a careermaking performance as a young man manipulating his way through the streets of Queens to help his brother get out of jail. “Good Time” is an artistic leap forward for co-directors Josh and Benny Safdie, who give viewers an unsettlingly intimate glimpse of love borne of dysfunction and dead ends. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Face/off: In real life, racists aren’t so easy to spot the Ku Klux Klan is the hero — as in D.W. Griffith’s “The Birth of a Nation” — its members still sport their signature look. (Hey, in 1915 it was what every stylish, violent bigot was wearing.) Appearances varied, but these signs were always apparent. The reactions to the events in Charlottesville last weekend included some pearl-clutching about how the (mostly) men in the crowd didn’t “look” like racists. Even Peter Cvjetanovic, photographed screaming like an angry racist, said, “I’m not the angry racist they see in that photo.” Which, if that’s the case, those people over at Photoshop have really stepped up their game. For many white Americans, the outward signifiers of racism have functioned in a handy, movie-like way — if that guy flies the Stars and Bars and I don’t, he’s racist and I’m not. Go, me. But Aug. 12 showed that the movie way of looking at bad guys doesn’t work well off screen, and that is disconcerting for people who’ve grown up being taught that villains wear black hats or red armbands. Now the bad guys put down their torches, furl their flags and return to society, blending in like background extras and tweeting about how they’re so

“White nationalists,” muttered Indiana Jones. “I hate these guys.” That is, of course, not what Indy said in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” Because what he saw was very clear: men with swastika armbands giving straight-armed salutes while gleefully flinging works by Brecht, Remarque and Mann onto a roaring conflagration. The line between good and evil was as defined as Harrison Ford’s jawline. We knew who the Nazis were; moreover, they knew who they were, as they proudly embraced the name. In real life, the labels have gotten trickier: Just because someone talks like a Nazi and heils like a Nazi doesn’t mean he calls himself a Nazi. Even though a Nazi by any other name stinks just as much. When it comes to depicting white supremacists on screen, the movies rarely shy away from the signifiers that have become shorthand for “racist bad guy.” In “To Kill a Mockingbird,” they were sloppy, uneducated rednecks. In “American History X,” a swastika tattoo got you into the Aryan Brotherhood. Even when

Alt-left agitator Indiana Jones takes on an equally bad guy on the other side.

misunderstood between attacks on the “Jew media.” To be confronted with a villain whose outward appearance says less KKK and more J. Crew is to no longer be able to be comfortable in the thought that not wearing racist symbols is enough to not be racist. Instead, it means that the bar for “I’m not a racist” has been raised from avoiding symbols to speaking out against them. Racism politely ignored at the Thanksgiving table is the new armband;

shifting in awkward silence at a bigoted joke is the new peaked hood; refusing to selfreflect on our own bigotry is the new burning cross. For many white Americans, movies were our introduction to what racism looked like; we just assumed it wore its on-screen face all the time. Now the movie makeup is gone — and the face we see looks a lot like ours. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

MTV’s ‘Unplugged’ gets … plugged back in

MTV said Thursday that its live music series “Unplugged” will return to the network this fall for “a fresh reinvention” of the show. The “Unplugged” franchise, which first debuted on MTV in 1989, features artists in intimate venues as they perform stripped-down versions of their hits. Shawn Mendes will kick off the new season on Sept. 8, taking the stage at the Theater at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. (EXPRESS) Justin Bieber drops new song, “Friends,” with producer BloodPop

FILM REVIEW “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” is meat-and-potatoes filmmaking at its most fungible. Co-starring Ryan Reynolds as Michael Bryce, a disgraced security expert seeking redemption, and Samuel L. Jackson as his nemesisturned-client Darius Kincaid — a murderer-for-hire Michael must reluctantly protect while Darius prepares to testify against a Belarusian dictator accused of war crimes (Gary Oldman) — the comic action/buddy flick serves up an undistinguished bill of fare. For acting, there’s not one but two cheese-stuffed baked potatoes on the plate, with Jackson and Reynolds vying for the audience’s attention. That’s not to say there’s no pleasure in watching Jackson do his thing: glare, grin and then unload with a mouthful of invective, followed by a can of whup-ass. As for plot, the film is gratuitously violent and preposterous. As Michael and Darius set out on their mission, it’s easy to forget exactly what’s at stake for each of them, with all the long and ludicrous chase sequences, episodes of forced separation followed by implausible reunion and, seemingly, one eleventhhour appearance by a deus ex machina after another. Despite all the mayhem, “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” is a bland dish. If it weren’t for all its fireballs and F-bombs, you might even be able to get some shuteye. The week’s best movie previews

‘The Florida Project’

‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Oct. 6

EXPECTED RELEASE: Oct. 27

SUMMARY: Writer-director Sean Baker made a splash with 2015’s shot-on-an-iPhone “Tangerine.” His follow-up feature is a story of the boredom and wonder summer vacation can bring, with the story of a largely unsupervised little girl who, with her friends, is on a quest to find stability, something to do and a whole lot of ice cream. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Yorgos Lanthimos is seriously, brilliantly demented. Now he’s taking on psychological horror, just to make 2015’s romantic (?) comedy (?) “The Lobster” look entirely normal. Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman star as people. People who do stuff. Stuff that’s unclear, but given the creepiness of the trailer, it seems they won’t be doing anything good. K.P.K.

Harper’s Magazine published a transcript of the process, including some of the choicest insults potential jurors had for Shkreli. “I believe the defendant is the face of corporate greed in America,” Juror No. 77 said.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
