Selections included clips of a cat startling a bear and a scene from “Jurassic Park” edited to add giant cats. (AP)

A face-lift for Henry

vacations

Take a look at Obama’s summer reading list

Henry, the 14-foot-tall African bush elephant that has

towered over tourists in the rotunda of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History since 1959, was beginning to show his age. So this week, taxidermists and smithsonian

artists are giving Henry the taxidermy equivalent of a weeklong spa treatment while the diorama he stands on is rebuilt. Bonnie Berkowitz and Patterson Clark (The washington post)

Henry on the outside

Henry’s skin was originally coated with beeswax, said taxidermist and sculptor Paul Rhymer, who is leading the restoration. The wax coating was, in 1959, an innovative way to protect the skin from the exposure to rapid changes in temperature and humidity near the museum’s entrance. It did its job wonderfully, Rhymer said. This is the most extensive face-lift Henry has had since he got a new coat of wax in the 1980s. Henry’s original tusks, which weighed 90 pounds each, were replaced with fiberglass replicas in the 1970s to reduce stress on the mount. Sources: Paul Rhymer of Rhymer Studio, model maker Natalie Gallelli and project manager Charles Noble of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

Wax Hide Papiermache Aluminum screen Wooden rib

What is happening to Henry

Henry’s 2-ton hide is hollow, attached to a shell made of papiermache and aluminum screening and held together with wooden ribs. Assembly was completed from inside by a man who got out through a door in the belly — an area that Rhymer’s team repaired this week. According to museum legend, that person left a letter and bottle of whiskey in one of the legs.

carefully dusted. While one person very lightly “tickles” the skin with a feather duster, a second vacuums the dust from the air with a shop vac. melted in an electric skillet and colored by wildlife painter Jennifer O’Cualain, are used to fill cracks. Texturizing: Wax is shiny; elephants are not. So Rhymer’s crew uses wire brushes and sculpting tools to add texture to the wax that is similar to elephant hide. Painting: The last step is a very light coat of paint with wax, applied by just touching a bristled brush to Henry’s skin.

Model maker Natalie Gallelli will re-sculpt the “ground” he stands on using foam covered with a polymer concrete. More photos released from string of robberies D.C. police on Thursday made public additional photographs of people wanted for questioning in connection with a series of armed robberies that occurred last month over a three-hour span from Chevy Chase to Capitol Hill. Police said they believe the six hold-ups are related. Gunmen took at least $1,700 from the victims, some of whom they ordered to lie at gunpoint on the sidewalk or street. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Dozens protest Hogan’s deportation decision THE DISTRICT Dozens of people marched around the iron fence surrounding the governor’s mansion in Annapolis on Thursday, protesting Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s decision to notify federal immigration officials when an illegal immigrant targeted for deportation is released from the state-run Baltimore City Detention Center. They chanted in Spanish: “The people united will never be divided” and “We are in the fight.” They said they hoped to compel Hogan, a Republican, to reconsider his decision, which was

made with no fanfare shortly after he took office in January. Advocates worry that the action could lead to the deportations of people who have not committed serious crimes. “We want Maryland to remain a welcoming state,” said Gustavo Andrade, organizing director for Casa de Maryland, an immigrant advocacy group. “Our community will not be scapegoated, and our families will not be separated so extreme politicians can score cheap points.” A spokesman for Hogan said the advocates are misdirecting

their criticism, noting that Hogan is simply complying with a request of the Obama administration. The Obama administration asked local officials this summer to notify their federal counterparts 48 hours before an immigrant who is being targeted for deportation is scheduled to be released so that agents can move to detain them. The agency says only immigrants who have been convicted of a serious crime, are involved in a gang or are considered a threat to national security would be targeted. OVETTA WIGGINS

Lawyers for a man charged with killing three Alexandria residents over a 10-year span said Thursday their client is innocent and that his mental illness made him the target of unfounded suspicions. At a pretrial hearing, lawyers for Charles Severance won the right to tell jurors about Severance’s mental illness at his upcoming murder trial. Prosecutors say Severance shot and killed three city residents in their homes dating back to 2003. (AP) THE DISTRICT

Could D.C. decriminalize prostitution in the city? D.C. Council member David Grosso said he is considering introducing legislation this fall that would decriminalize prostitution in the city and provide sex workers with resources to be safe and get out of the business if they desire. When Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., first started trying to overturn D.C.’s marijuana laws last year, then-Mayor Vincent Gray urged residents to boycott Harris’ home district, which includes the vacation spot Ocean City. Now some activists are organizing a trip to Ocean City on Wednesday in the name of statehood. Daniel Lewis, who graduated from Georgetown Day School this year, started DisruptDC with a friend and his sister, Tessa, after they saw a pro-statehood segment this month on John Oliver’s HBO show “Last Week Tonight.” Once they arrive, they’ll hand out fliers explaining statehood, advising people to call Harris’ office if they want D.C. to become a state. Those interested in attending should meet at Freedom Plaza at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. PERRY STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said she does not know what’s driving the city’s crime spike.

Lanier addresses D.C.’s rise in crime THE DISTRICT More than 10 percent of the District’s spiking number of homicides this year have involved previously known violent offenders who have recently been released from prison, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Thursday. Lanier said that police so far have identified 10 such people, out of the city’s 91 homicide cases this year. “Ten. That’s significant and it’s different from anything we’ve seen before,” she said. D.C. police declined to name the people to whom Lanier was referring. Gwendolyn Crump, a police spokeswoman, later said that the 10 people Lanier was referring to included victims. Lanier, who addressed reporters alongside Mayor Muriel Bowser, said she still did not know what was driving the city’s rising homicide count, which hit

91 this week — a 28 percent increase from this time last year. Nearly four people have been killed, on average, every week in the District since June 1 alone, and city officials are under pressure to show that they are undertaking a meaningful strategy to stem the tide. District police have responded to the murders by fanning out in some neighborhoods — such as Woodland Terrace in Southeast, which has seen a tenfold increase in police — and by altering their patrols and visibility in other neighborhoods, Lanier said. But the slayings have continued, sometimes in the course of petty arguments. “In some of the violence we’ve seen recently, it has just been dispute resolution with a gun. It’s that simple,” Lanier said. ABIGAIL HAUSLOHNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

People remove the body of a victim killed Thursday in the bombing at Jameela market in Baghdad.

Truck bomb targeting Shiites kills 67 in Iraq Islamic State claims responsibility for attack at a popular market BAGHDAD In one of the deadliest single attacks in postwar Baghdad, a truck bomb shattered a popular fruit-and-vegetable market in a teeming Shiite neighborhood Thursday, killing 67 people and wounding more than 150 others. Militants from the self-described Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombing that incinerated much of the Jameela market in the district of Sadr City. The dead and wounded were carried away in blood-soaked blankets and garbage bags amid

the charred and twisted stalls and spilled produce. The Sunni extremist group, which holds about a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria, said it targeted a gathering place for Shiites and vowed more attacks. It often attacks military checkpoints or predominantly Shiite areas with the goal of undermining confidence in the government’s security efforts. While attacks are common in Baghdad, Thursday’s was the deadliest single bombing in the capital since the height of Iraq’s sectarian bloodletting in 2006-07. More than 200 people were killed in a 2006 attack by a series of car bombs and mortar rounds that struck Sadr City. That prompted

the government to implement a 24-hour curfew in Baghdad that remained in effect, on and off, until earlier this year, when Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi lifted it to try to return to normal life in the capital. In Thursday’s bombing, police said the attackers put the explosives in a refrigeration truck so that it fit in with other vehicles delivering supplies to the market, the main center for produce and food sales in Baghdad. The bomb was detonated shortly after dawn. The market is especially crowded on Thursdays because shoppers from other provinces stock up on food for the weekend, one of the officers said. VIVIAN

Trump, Sanders and the rise of the outsider Voter anger is fueling the surging campaigns of unlikely candidates

Why Sanders should want Biden to run

GETTY IMAGES

POLITICS This has become the summer of the political outsider, as a cast of interlopers upend and dominate the presidential nominating process in both parties. The surging candidacies of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are fueled by people’s anger with the status quo and desire for authenticity in political leaders. Across the ideological spectrum, candidates are gaining traction by separating themselves from the political and economic system that many everyday Americans view as rigged against them. “There are a lot of voters who are exceptionally frustrated with traditional politics,” said pollster Geoff Garin, who advises Priorities USA Action, a super PAC supporting Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. “A lot of this anger crosses party lines in the sense that it is directed at what people see as a concentration of wealth and power that leaves them holding the short end of the stick.” Consider recent developments in the Republican race. Rick Perry was the governor of Texas for 14 years and had an enviable record on jobs to boot, but his presidential campaign is running on fumes. Sen. Lindsey Graham has served on Capitol Hill for a quarter-century, yet the South Carolina Republican barely cracks 1 percent in the polls. In stark contrast, Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon with more expertise in separating conjoined twins than in brokering trade

agreements, is surging in recent polls. Carly Fiorina, a businesswoman who has never held elective office, is also on the upswing. Then there’s Trump. The brash billionaire, who loudly brands politicians as “losers,” has rocketed to front-runner status. On the left, Sanders has blazed a similar outside trail. The selfdescribed socialist senator from Vermont, who routinely scolds the Washington and Wall Street establishments, is giving Clinton a scare. He has drawn massive crowds — and on Wednesday, he surpassed Clinton in a New Hampshire poll for the first time. “People feel that the candidates are too manufactured, there’s not enough spontaneity,” said Tad Devine, a Democratic strategist who is advising Sanders. “They want someone who, even if they don’t agree with them, is telling it like they see it.” But insider candidates are by no means out of the game. In

“There’s a longing for real authenticity in politics today.” TAD DEVINE, a Democratic strategist who is advising Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign

the GOP race, former Florida governor Jeb Bush is the clear fundraising leader and holds his own in polling. Many Republicans and Democrats consider him the most likely eventual nominee. Officials in the Bush campaign say they are not concerned about Trump’s summer rise. It is only August, after all, and they argued that the race will remain unsettled through the fall. Rick Wilson, a Republican consultant who is not aligned with a presidential campaign, said voters eventually will gravitate toward the more serious

contenders. “A lot of the Trump stuff is an emotional response to being furious about the establishment, about immigration, all these other sensations that are not illegitimate feelings but that are not going to be politically viable for the long haul,” he said. But other Republicans think the tempest that Trump has whipped up will not die down. One of them is Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who, despite a career in politics, has positioned himself firmly as a candidate outside the establishment. He has refrained from attacking Trump, setting himself up to capture the antiestablishment vote when it looks for its final home this winter. “I don’t think it is necessarily a majority of either party that is fueled by fury,” Garin said, “but there are a lot of furious voters out there who feel completely alienated from and let down by politics as usual.” PHILIP RUCKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

ISIS accused of using chemical weapons on Iraqi Kurds

In the latest on Joe Biden’s possible 2016 presidential bid, he is at his vacation spot in South Carolina, asking political allies for advice and gauging the strength of Hillary Clinton’s campaign, according to The Wall Street Journal. Biden is expected to say next month if he will run. The focus of Biden’s will he/ won’t he is all about Clinton and how a Biden bid would affect her. That’s fine. But it misses the most important point, which is: A Biden candidacy would be the best possible thing for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ chances of actually winning the nomination. Sanders, an independent from Vermont, is unlike both Biden and Clinton. He is totally anti-establishment and is widely perceived as someone driven primarily by ideology and personal belief rather than electability and calculation. Sanders’ problem is that the establishment lane isn’t divided up nearly enough for him to have a chance by running in the outsider lane. Witness the new CNN/ORC poll out of Iowa. Sanders is at 31 percent, but that still is 19 points behind Clinton. Now, consider what might happen if Biden gets into the race. Let’s say Biden moves up from 12 to 20 percent. Virtually all of that comes from Clinton’s hide. Now, Clinton is at 42 to Sanders’ 31 to Biden’s 20. Suddenly it looks like Sanders might actually have a chance to win. CHRIS CILLIZZA

nation+world CIVIL RIGHTS Almost three weeks after Zachary Hammond, 19, was fatally shot by police in a drug bust in a Hardee’s parking lot in South Carolina, federal officials have launched a civil rights investigation into his death. Hammond’s death fit the profile of many other officer-involved shootings that have made headlines this year. He was said to be unarmed and was initially approached by police for a relatively minor offense — possession of a small amount of marijuana. But Hammond was also white,

and his parents have wondered if that might explain why their son’s death didn’t initially provoke the same outrage as similar shootings involving African-Americans. The investigation, announced Wednesday, involves the Department of Justice, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney for South Carolina. It will run parallel to the state’s own investigation, according to the Charleston Post and Courier. Hammond was on a first date the night of the July 26 shooting. His date, 23-year-old Toni Morton, was eating an ice cream

cone. Then Seneca, S.C., police converged on their car, reportedly because they knew that Morton carried drugs (she was later charged). Then, two shots were fired into the car, killing Hammond. What transpired between the officers’ arrival and the moment of Hammond’s death is unclear. Police and the officer involved have given conflicting accounts. The parents of Hammond pleaded Wednesday for the rele ase of d ashc a m fo otage to clarify what happened. SARAH KAPLAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Pads that renters really dig

JASON HORNICK (FOR EXPRESS)

Urban gardens are cropping up in apartments all around D.C.

Renters gather at the community garden plot that Ally Maschino, center in blue, started on the roof of Senate Square apartments in D.C.

GREEN LIVING When Ally Maschino, 29, moved into an apartment at Senate Square in Northeast D.C. a little more than two years ago, she lamented leaving her potted vegetable garden on the steps of her brownstone. “I was kind of bummed,” says the public health research associate. “I had to give up my garden.” Then it hit her: The roof terrace at Senate Square (201 I St. NE; 202-488-0969; senatesquaretowers.com) has large plots with trees, grasses and bushes. Maybe she could turn one into a vegetable garden? Garden-to-table food is no longer reserved for those with houses and yards. Community vegetable gardens — as well as access to farmers markets and foods delivered to buildings directly from local farms — “are as important today [to renters] as what the fitness and business centers and those types CONTINUED ON PAGE R3

of traditional amenities were just a couple of years ago,” says Chad Cooley, senior vice president of Bozzuto Management company. After working out the logistics that spring, Maschino’s building manager agreed to let her and more than a dozen other residents convert a 5-foot-by-20-foot plot with knee-high sea grass into an edible garden. Today, the group of 15 grows tomatoes, summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers, green beans, carrots, lettuce and herbs in it. “People just rave about it,” Maschino says. “It’s a fun little gathering place.” Although Maschino shares her garden space with a group, in many communities residents can get their own individual plot, free of charge, on a first-come, firstserved basis. Take the brandnew Pallas Apartments at Pike & Rose (11550 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda, Md.; 855-229-2309; pallasapartments. com) for example: It will offer 20 3.5-foot-by-3.5-foot raised beds on a roof terrace for residents, which will be available this fall. The Pallas garden patch is located next to grills and a solarium with a full kitchen, “so it’s literally quite possibly the shortest farm-to-table that exists,” says Mike Ennes, vice president for the building’s developer, Federal Realty. Many apartment buildings supply the garden beds, soil and access to water, and residents can grow whatever they like — edible or not. Most do tend to grow fruits, veggies and herbs, though. The

gardens are popular: Many have waiting lists that can take entire growing seasons to turn over. Some buildings also offer perks for renters with green thumbs. Twice a year, residents receive free edibles to plant at Post Corners (5804 Post Corners Trail, Centreville, Va.; 844-5127778, bit.ly/1IQMfGL), which has had a community garden on the premises since the complex opened in 1995. Other complexes maximize the bounty of social opportunities. Bozzuto’s Lakeside Apartments (6221 Summer Pond Drive,

Centreville, Va.; 866-485-5745, bit.ly/1KbOHc6) offers gardening workshops and cooking classes for all residents using produce from its garden. It also has garden plots managed by the building, and residents are invited to clip herbs and pick veggies. “It’s really become a community within a community,” Cooley says. TRACY KRULIK (FOR EXPRESS) NEXT WEEK: Pet-friendly “yappy” hours? Or “Scandal” viewing parties? Ready to Rent looks at social mixers at local buildings.

Some local apartment buildings are using their gardens to help others. Rooftop Roots (rooftoproots.org) partners with individuals and buildings to donate homegrown harvests to local food banks. Its biggest garden is atop an affordable housing apartment building in Alexandria, The Station at Potomac Yard (650 Maskell St., 703-751-0003; housingalexandria.org). With the help of volunteer Wanda “Peaches” Dickerson, 55, who leads the effort with her fellow residents, edible plants are growing in 300 3-gallon buckets on the roof. “I come from a family that loves to dig in the soil. It’s so wonderful to see the fruits of your labor,” Dickerson says. And, volunteers get some of the bounty. “We’ll get a big group out and harvest a bunch of lettuce and kind of divvy it up for everyone, with the majority going to a live food bank,” says Thomas Schneider, Rooftop Roots executive director, describing harvest days, which typically happen in spring and fall. WASHINGTONPOST.COM | WHERE WE LIVE

In a house

In a high-rise

There’s no place like …

SPACE: Renting a house usually means more square

PERKS: High-rise buildings often offer a concierge, 24-hour maintenance, security, and spare key access for lockouts, pet sitters and guests. High-rises often offer fitness centers, roof decks and business centers. SPACE: Common areas are shared. Many properties offer parking in a garage or lot and some offer valet parking. In most cases you will have to pay for a parking space in addition to your rent. In the D.C. area, a garage parking space can range from $50 to $300 monthly. RENT: In high-rise rentals, rents are not typically negotiable. Some properties will offer a better rent amount for a longer lease term, but usually only offer a special on fees or one to two months’ free rent.

Renting a house and renting an apartment in a highrise are two totally different choices, but both are great choices — depending on your lifestyle. Do you work long hours and need a more carefree lifestyle? Or do you want more room and need easy outdoor access for pets? Here’s a look at how renting a house stacks up against renting in a high-rise. NANCY SIMMONS STARRS (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

footage — as well as a yard for grilling and relaxing on your own. You may also have a driveway or a garage, and be able to walk directly into your home, which is much easier for pet owners. (And in most cases, you will be able to negotiate what type of pet or pets you may have with an individual landlord.) RENT: Dealing with an individual owner can mean flexibility: Your monthly payment may be negotiable with a longer lease. It is often less costly for a landlord to have a tenant sign a longer lease, typically two to three years, at a slightly lower price than it is for a landlord to have to pay for a home to be painted and cleaned for a new tenant after a year. RENEWAL: At the end of the term of your lease, as long as you have been a good tenant, there is often the opportunity to negotiate the rent if you would like to stay in the home longer.

Nancy Simmons Starrs is founder and president of Apartment Detectives, a D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia apartment search service.

THREE POINTERS

Jayson Werth entered Thursday with a .188 batting average this season.

Slump puzzles Werth

Nationals outfielder says he’s felt good since his return, but the results aren’t there NATIONALS What bugs Jayson Werth the most is that he feels good. His left wrist, healed from two small fractures and a bad bone bruise in May, has recovered. Even though he is still building strength, the veteran outfielder — who was on the disabled list for two months — believes his wrist is strong. For some players, it can take up to 100 at-bats to dust off the rust; Werth entered Thursday with 53 since his return. In 15 games, he hit .151 with one home run, six RBIs, two walks and 13 strikeouts. His season totals had dropped to .188 with a .535 onbase-plus-slugging percentage. “I wouldn’t say it’s frustrating, but I’d say it’s been a little

challenging because I feel like my timing has been good,” Werth said. “Sometimes when you don’t feel good or you’re out of sync, you don’t really expect results. It’s been weird because I feel good. It’s just the results.” Many of Werth’s at-bats since his return have been long; he has fouled off pitches and worked pitchers. His walk total is low, though. He has drawn only two since returning from injury. And when he does make contact, Werth hasn’t hit the ball with his usual authority. The Nationals have given Werth periodic off-days to ease back into the season. And while the offense continues to be sluggish, perhaps manager Matt Williams will continue to rest

Werth every handful of days. The Nationals, chasing the Mets, respect Werth’s track record, but know he is emerging out of spring training mode. “It’s a work in progress, it’s timing, it’s all of that,” Williams said. “You look up and he has 170-some at-bats for the whole season. It’s not like riding a bike. And generally, he takes a little bit longer. He’s going to continue to be a big part of our success if we can get him rolling with [Ryan Zimmerman] and Anthony [Rendon] and have some semblance of that lineup back that’ll do nothing but help us.” When Werth returned from his broken wrist in 2012, his power was sapped, but he became a potent leadoff hitter because of

his approach, ability to drive up pitch counts and knack for drawing walks. Since his return from this wrist injury, Werth has most often hit fifth in the lineup, after starting out in the Nos. 3 and 4 spots. Werth doesn’t agree with the notion that he can be eased back into form by hitting lower in the lineup. “I don’t think where I hit in the lineup dictates or matters,” he said. “I feel like I’m close. I feel like it’s just a matter of time before I bust out. But I also feel like my team needs me. I’m very aware of what’s at stake and what I mean to the lineup and to the team. I want to be good. I want to be the player I can be more than anybody.” JAMES WAGNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Round 1 at the PGA Golf’s final major began Thursday at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, Wis. Here are a few highlights from the opening round at the PGA Championship. (AP)

3 A tough way to finish As of late afternoon, players were averaging nearly 0.7 over par on the par-4 18th and more than 0.4 over on the par-4 ninth. There were five birdies and 46 bogeys on No. 18 and 11 birdies and 39 bogeys on No. 9.

2 Woods’ woes continue Tiger Woods had 33 putts and finished with a 3-over 75. If he misses the cut, it would be the first time in his career that he missed the cut at three majors in a row.

1 Johnson’s been here Dustin Johnson raced to the morning lead with a 6-under 66. He knows this course well. In 2010, he grounded his club in a trampled bunker and was penalized two shots, which kept him out of a playoff for the PGA Championship.

New Bills LB Enemkpali says he’s sorry

Two days after punching and breaking Geno Smith’s jaw, linebacker Ikemefuna Enemkpali said he’s sorry — without mentioning the Jets’ quarterback by name. As for joining his new team, the Bills, on Thursday, Enemkpali said he’s grateful for a second chance a day after being claimed off waivers.”It should’ve never happened. I should’ve walked away from the situation,” he said. “It was never my intention to hurt anybody.” (AP)

From left, Aldis Hodge, Neil Brown, Jr., Jason Mitchell, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Corey Hawkins in “Straight Outta Compton”

Sets the record straight ‘Straight Outta Compton’ deftly explores what was behind N.W.A.’s defiant attitude FILM REVIEW Longtime admirers of the rap group N.W.A., who helped create West Coast gangsta rap with their confrontational lyrics and defiant performance, will surely flock to “Straight Outta Compton,” the long-awaited chronicle of the band’s swift rise. But “Compton” deserves a much wider reach than the group’s hard-core fans. Thanks to adroit direction from F. Gary Gray, this classic star-is-born story manages to transcend its own tight focus. As the film makes clear, the unfiltered rage that got the band into so much trouble had its roots in grim realities that are all too palpable today. The story begins in mid-1980s Los Angeles with the three main

players in N.W.A.’s formation and eventual success: Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell), Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) and Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), who along with Dre’s original partner DJ Yella (Neil Brown Jr.) and later MC Ren (Aldis Hodge) formed what would be known as N.W.A., an abbreviation for the less printable N----z With Attitude. “Straight Outta Compton” thrillingly revisits the group’s early recording sessions and initial rise to fame. The film is wildly entertaining as the members of N.W.A. go from neighborhood heroes — their singles blaring from low-rider speakers and corner boom boxes — to bona fide stars, selling out arenas and alarming older, mostly white, listeners

‘Straight Outta Compton’ (R) DIRECTOR: F. Gary Gray STARS: Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Neil Brown Jr. IN A NUTSHELL: Young Los Angeles rappers rise from troubled backgrounds to form N.W.A.

appalled at titles like “Gangsta, Gangsta” and “F--- tha Police.” Gray has assembled a pitchperfect cast to portray the band, including Ice Cube’s real-life son, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the perpetually scowling rapper. Simply as a rags-to-riches story, “Straight Outta Compton”

would be an engaging ride through a storied chapter of pop culture. But the film gains meaning and emotional heft from its context: in this case, a time period bracketed by the overpolicing of South Central and the beating of Rodney King and subsequent riots. The film deftly illustrates the forces that pushed the group and their colleagues to strike those poses, and why they were so valorized for pushing back, at least symbolically. As enlightening as it is entertaining, as sobering as it is exhilarating, “Straight Outta Compton” reminds viewers not only who N.W.A. were and what they meant, but why they mattered — and still do. This satisfying excursion into genre-film territory centers around Kevin Bacon, above, who plays a corrupt rural sheriff in pursuit of two 10-year-old boys who have taken his cruiser on a joy ride. “Cop Car” builds up a nice, suspenseful head of steam, mixing dark comedy and true creepiness in such a way that one mood never overwhelms the other. Lethal, but not in a good way There’s not much here like the ‘60s original in ‘Man From U.N.C.L.E’ FILM REVIEW A lthough “The Man F rom U.N.C.L.E.” has ambitions of honoring the TV spy series on which it’s based, it fails to evoke any of that show’s 1960s cool. It’s a creaky, bloated simulacrum of the groovy past, where it should be a quick, slick and debonair re-imagining of it. Let’s start with the theory that the movie is an action film. After a brisk prologue, in which CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) whisks Gaby (an East German grease monkey played by Alicia Vikander) over the Berlin Wall — into a waiting get-away van, via a zip line — the film pivots into a dull drawing-room comedy devoid of derring-do. When it finally gets going again, the final chase scene is filmed so poorly that director Guy Ritchie resorts to using split screens to jazz it up. dirty double entendres. But the saddest thing is that the film is set up like an origin story, ending with the formation of the titular international spy agency — which stands for United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. The threat that this mess might be followed by a sequel is enough to make anyone cry uncle. MICHAEL O’ SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘The Hateful Eight’

‘About Ray’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Dec. 25

EXPECTED RELEASE: Sept. 18

SUMMARY: Like any good Quentin Tarantino film,

SUMMARY: In a story just starting to be told on film, a family tries to come to grips with a teen transitioning from female to male. As the mother (Naomi Watts) tries to obtain permission for the surgery from a father long out of the picture, the grandmother (Susan Sarandon) struggles to understand it all. Follow along as Elle Fanning transitions from Ramona to Ray. S.D.

this one features a little quirk, a lot of gore, and plenty of Samuel L. Jackson. In this dark ode to cowboy Westerns, in an odd cast with Channing Tatum and Kurt Russell, eight strangers search for shelter in a blizzard but get caught up in a bounty hunter-fueled plot of deception. Start counting the bodies now. SAMANTHA DEAN (EXPRESS)

“Little known fact: sex was invented in 2012 when Tinder was launched.”

“Get ready for people to click the Galaxy Note 5’s stylus like a ballpoint pen”

“Wheaties really is the breakfast of champions”

“Memes and Reddit are banned in Russia now, sounds like my kind of country”

@TINDER sends a tweet to Vanity

JACOB KASTRENAKES, at theverge.com, writes about the new stylus for the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Designed to address some users’ frustration that they needed to drag their stylus out of its designated phone slot with their fingernail, the new S Pen has a spring-loaded top. When users press down — like they would a pen — the stylus pops out of its slot.

@BROCKTHATCHER reacts to a new beer collaboration between Wheaties and brewery Fulton. HefeWheaties is a limited-edition wheat beer sold in 16-ounce cans that look like a box of Wheaties. For now, the beer is only available in the Minneapolis area beginning Aug. 26, but if it does well, its distribution could be expanded.

@DARKGENEX reacts to Russia banning Reddit in the country after discovering a 2-year-old post on drug tips. Roskomnadzor, Russia’s censorship agency, blocked access to the website after the country’s drug agency declared that it was harbouring drug-related information. The post that sparked the ban has no comments and was about how to grow mushrooms.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

SUGGESTED TITLE

Ann Curry is working on a book — most likely some kind of tell-all about her time at NBC, the New York Post reported. Curry was fired from the “Today” show in 2012, then left the network early this year. “We’re told her nondisclosure agreement with NBC doesn’t prevent her from talking about her feelings about events that have already been in the news,” the Post wrote. SCHEDULING

‘I’ll pencil you in for an awkward convo outside, right after my workout’ Lamar Odom told TMZ that he did not “ambush” ex-wife Khloe Kardashian outside a spin class. “You know I know her. So how would you think I ended up there?” he said, implying their meeting was arranged. “Nobody got followed, nobody got hassled, nobody got harassed, nobody got grabbed on, none of that.” (EXPRESS)

Star beauty treatments normal folks can afford! LeAnn Rimes takes 40 vitamins and supplements a day and owns her own spray-tan machine, she told Into the Gloss magazine. “I have an herbalist I work with who has put me on a bunch of different things,” she said. Of the machine, she said, “[It’s] like $500, so we save so much money. We do it once or twice a week. It’s like a car wash.” (EXPRESS)

In sum: Beyonce wins womanhood Beyonce is the cover model for Vogue’s massive September issue, the magazine announced Thursday. The accompanying story quotes several famous fans of Beyonce, and includes sentences like, “Beyonce is a powerhouse. She can sneer. She can out-strut and stare down any man in the film frame. Call her, in the songs, She Who Must Be Obeyed — in the palace, in the bedroom, in the hood, on the road, and on the runway.” Regarding the letter “B,” the author writes: “Such is the power of Beyonce that just one letter tells us who she is. What does it take to run the world?” (EXPRESS)
