CURIOSITIES

Remember, dot-matrix printers were once sexy

Erick Sanchez, above left, just wanted Kenny Loggins to play in his living room. Thanks to 185 backers on Kickstarter, his wish is coming true. The 28-year-old PR consultant says it will be a tight fit to squeeze 50 people into his rented condo in Eastern Market, but he’s committed to living the dream. Sanchez has at least one more big task ahead of him, though. “I haven’t had a chance to talk to my landlord yet,” he said. Cue the intro to “Danger Zone”? R.S. JULY 15

Kenny Loggins launches a Kickstarter Loggins and his band Blue Sky Riders seek $85,000 to fund a new album. Under an “exclusive tier,” they offer to come play in a fan’s living room.

Erick Sanchez launches a Kickstarter The selfdescribed “Logginsista” began his campaign to get Loggins to play his living room. “It seemed to be an impossible dream. It’s been a Don Quixotestyle journey.”

Loggins and Sanchez chat on Skype “He was really excited about me starting the campaign,” Sanchez says. “He wished me luck.”

Sanchez goes on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Kimmel quizzes him on Loggins lyrics and asks, “Are you going to go after Kenny Rogers or are you a one-Kenny man?” (Sanchez is a one-Kenny man.)

Sanchez’s campaign hits its goal After a final push imploring his friends on social media to donate, Sanchez hits the $30,000 mark around 10 p.m., with 11 days left to go in the campaign.

Loggins plays in Sanchez living room? The details will be worked out after the campaign ends, but Sanchez says they are looking at sometime in 2015 for the acoustic home show.

Soon, it won’t be news when a 3-D printer shows up in D.C. For now, they’re still a novel (and expensive and finicky) invention, so the new MakerBot at the National Building Museum’s gift shop should draw lots of admiration. In 12 hours, it can spit out a 4 inch by 4 inch model, above, of the museum’s Big Maze. Buy a model (though not one made by the D.C. printer, yet) for $25. H.J.M.

Let’s hope Momofuku doesn’t burn us on pie Celebrity chef David Chang told Washingtonian Tuesday that he plans to open a D.C. outpost of his New York-based Momofuku restaurant group in 2015. The high hopes, the hype and even the name are reminiscent of another eatery whose allegedly imminent opening caused this much fuss: London-based noodle bar Wagamama, which promised a space in Penn Quarter for four years, then bailed in 2012. Gay marriages may soon begin in Va. VIRGINIA A federal appeals court refused Wednesday to delay its ruling striking down Virginia’s gay marriage ban, which means that same-sex couples could begin marrying in the state as early as next week. The state would also need to start recognizing marriages from out of state by next Wednesday, assuming the U.S. Supreme Court does not intervene. A county clerk in northern Virginia had asked the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond to stay its decision, issued

Ken Connelly, legal counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom, which is representing Prince William County Clerk of Court Michele McQuigg in the case, said the group will seek an emergency stay from the nation’s highest court “as soon as possible.” That request will go to Chief Justice John Roberts, who is responsible for the 4th Circuit. Connelly said he expects the stay to be granted, “given that

The appeals court ruling overturning that ban was the third such ruling by a federal appeals court and the first in the South. MICHAEL FELBERBAUM (AP)

Boardwalk pole dance in Ocean City raises eyebrows

Md. residents affected by May landslide agree to deal

An off-duty D.C. police detective was shot and wounded early Wednesday when authorities said a group of men tried to carjack him in Southeast, an encounter that led to a pursuit along the border with Maryland. Shortly before the shooting, officials said, the gunman and others struck another car, also belonging to an off-duty D.C. police officer. Police took one man into custody but were looking for several more whom they say had been in the burgundy Nissan Altima. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the wounded officer underwent surgery and was in stable condition.

A weekend street performance by a pole dancer on the Ocean City, Md., boardwalk is, not surprisingly, getting some attention. City officials say they have received numerous complaints that the performance by a woman in a bikini on a portable stripper pole is inappropriate for the family-friendly boardwalk. The town issued a statement saying it is reviewing its legal options. A town ordinance regulating street performers was rescinded in 2012 after a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union argued the rules were an impermissible restriction on free speech. Many performers now work the boardwalk for tips. (AP)

Residents of a Prince George’s County, Md., neighborhood disrupted by a landslide said Wednesday that they would accept the county government’s proposal to purchase and demolish six homes and repair the main road so that 22 other families can remain in their properties. The decision was announced by the Save Piscataway Hills organization, after a monthslong standoff. In the $15.5 million dollar plan, the county would pay fair market value to the owners of the six properties severely impacted by the slope failure, shore up the collapsing hillside and repair the cracked main road. Fast food fans love this new study A large international study questions the conventional wisdom that most people should cut back on salt, suggesting that the amount most folks consume is OK for heart health — and too little may be as bad as too much. The findings came under immediate attack by other scientists. The first study leader, Dr. Salim Yusuf of McMaster University’s Population Health Research Institute in Hamilton, Ontario, urged keeping an open mind, but also said people shouldn’t view the study as permission to eat more salt. Daughter is a suspect after mom killed, put in suitcase

A protester throws a tear gas container back at police Tuesday outside St. Louis, when protests again led to clashes.

Officer’s name unknown days after Mo. shooting Activists demand identity of man who killed Michael Brown; police worried for his safety FERGUSON, MO. In the days since an unarmed black teenager was shot dead by a white police officer in a St. Louis suburb, a big question that’s smoldered amid the outrage of many is who the officer is. Authorities have refused to release the name of the officer who shot 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson. Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson has said he’s concerned about the officer’s safety amid numerous death threats. Computer hackers have also targeted the city’s website and released details online about individual city employees.

But civil rights activists and the attorney for Brown’s family, all pressing for calm amid nights of unrest since Saturday’s shooting, counter that knowing the officer’s name may help the area to heal, allowing the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and others to dig into the officer’s background for any prior brutality. “We don’t want anyone’s life threatened. If someone like this officer is killed, then there is no justice,” said John Gaskin III of St. Louis County’s NAACP chapter. “What the officer may have done is certainly unacceptable,

and we are outraged. But we want to be realistic here: This is a man with a family.” The shooting has exposed deep racial and economic fault lines in the community, with the release of the officer’s name a festering demand of protesters. Few new details emerged Wednesday. Jackson, the police chief, told a local television station that the officer “was hit” and that the “side of his face was swollen,” but said there was no dashboard camera filming the incident. Amid protests, a St. Louis County police officer shot and critically wounded a man after he had pointed a gun at police early Wednesday, authorities said. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

U.S. AIMS TO RESCUE YAZIDIS: The Obama administration is weighing a range of military options to rescue thousands of refugees from the Yazidi sect trapped atop an Iraq mountain, a senior official said Wednesday. The administration is still ruling out ground forces but said “there are a variety of ways in which we can support the safe removal” of the Yazidis. They are expected to decide on a tactic in coming days.

A GOP primary challenger in Nebraska raised an interesting point in a debate over the weekend. Why should members of Congress make what they make — $174,000 a year — state Sen. Brad Ashford asked, when Congress isn’t getting things done? Ashford’s point is a good one. Since 1973, no Congress has earned more money for its work output than the current one. The Fix crunched the numbers, adjusting for inflation. PHILIP BUMP

U.S. cautious amid alarming Iraq threat Uncertainty, war weariness complicate American response to Islamic State IRAQ Senior U.S. officials describe the threat posed by the Islamic State in chilling terms, but have mounted a decidedly modest military campaign to check its advance through northern Iraq. The radical Islamist organization has attracted more fighters, controls more territory and has access to more money than alQaeda did before Sept. 11, say U.S. officials and terrorism experts. “I think the world is beginning to come to grips with the degree

to which this is unacceptable,” Secretary of State John Kerry said this week. So far, though, U.S. response to the group’s blitzkrieg through northern Iraq has been defined mainly by limits it has placed on U.S. military intervention. The disconnect between the unnerving assessments of the Islamic State and the apparent lack of urgency in confronting it reflects a mix of political and military constraints. Among them are no clear way to reverse recent

territorial gains, and America’s weariness with war, as well as uncertainty about whether the Islamic State could morph into a global terrorist threat. The U.S. military’s campaign against the Islamic State has focused on protecting U.S. citizens and delivering aid to as many as 40,000 trapped Yazidi refugees. U.S. military officials have emphasized that ongoing airstrikes are not designed to reverse gains made by Sunni fighters or open an escape route for

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki further lost support in his bid to cling to power but argued in his weekly TV address that staying was his “ethical and patriotic duty” to voters. Al-Maliki urged Iraqis to protest the appointment of Haider al-Abadi as Iraq’s prime minister. (TWP)

Yazidi refugees. The limited response has drawn criticism that the Obama administration is missing a chance to deliver a crippling blow against the insurgents. “Time is of the essence,” said Adm. James Stavridis, former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO. Other analysts say that the ruthlessness and fighting prowess that the Islamic State has employed are distinct from the kinds of organization associated with al-Qaeda’s terrorist plots. “What we are seeing in Iraq is a very capable insurgent ground force,” said Daniel Benjamin, a former top State Department counter-terrorism official. “That’s not the same as a very capable international terrorist operation.” GREG JAFFE AND GREG MILLER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Nationals lead the NL East, but Harper and Strasburg aren’t the reason why NATIONALS When Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper were picked No. 1 overall by the Nationals in back-to-back drafts, they were supposed to help turn around a struggling franchise. Several years later, Washington is a perennial playoff contender, and the team currently leads the NL East with a quarter of the regular season remaining. But Strasburg and Harper have little to do with this year’s success. The two have had up-and-down seasons before — with injuries usually playing a part — but 2014 has been particularly rough for them. Harper, an All-Star and NL Rookie of the Year in 2012, has hit just .230 with four home runs in 36 games since returning from a thumb injury on June 30. “He’s been searching a little bit,” manager Matt Williams said. “He’s been trying to find that timing, that rhythm. He entered Wednesday’s game with two home runs in his previous five games, one of them a walk-off in the 13th inning against the Mets last week. For his part, Strasburg has been stuck in a rut for some time. The 26-year-old right-hander has allowed an earned run in 12 of his past 13 starts, and he has a 2-6 record since mid-June. In his last start, he was rocked against Atlanta on Aug. 8, giving up seven earned runs. Strasburg, who had a 2.96 ERA in his first four major league seasons, ranks fourth among Washington’s five starters with a 3.68 ERA. Still, Strasburg, who had Tommy John surgery in 2010, has been able to rack up strikeouts — ranking fourth in the majors with 186. And he’s been one STARTERS

Strasburg — the fourth-highest mark in baseball. Though Strasburg hasn’t been consistent enough to warrant ace status in this rotation, Williams is confident his pitcher is developing properly. “I don’t know how we can argue with the numbers he’s put up,” Williams said. “It’s pretty good, really good. He does throw a lot of pitches, but that’s because he’s got really good stuff and he strikes out a lot of guys. I think he’s doing just fine. I think he’s progressing through his career just fine.”

The 5-foot-5 second baseman is one of the most efficient base runners — getting thrown out just six times out of 52 attempts.

REDSKINS During training camp, Redskins players welcomed the culture change that has washed over the franchise under the new coaching regime. No place is this more evident than on special teams. Last year, the Redskins were at the bottom of the NFL in several special teams categories, including average yards per kick return and net punting average. “It was embarrassing,” fullback Darrel Young said. “Everything that we stood for as football players was kind of humiliated.” New special teams coach Ben

Kotwica, an Army graduate, has energized the unit with his military background and detailoriented breakdowns. “You feel it in the air,” tight end Niles Paul said. “It’s a whole different atmosphere out there. You’ve got 11 guys who want to be out there, who want to make plays, who want to make tackles and who want to be a part of the special teams unit.” The Redskins also addressed their glaring deficiency by bringing in players who excelled in that role on other teams, including linebacker Adam Hayward, who

He is a great leader,” coach Jay Gruden said. “He makes everybody accountable on the unit.” Special teams remains a work in progress, though. The unit forced a fumble against the Patriots, but also committed a key penalty on the same play. “That’s what preseason is all about — working out all the kinks,” Paul said. “I think we’re doing that. Ward’s father speaks out He says there was ‘no reason’ for crash that led to his son’s death

AUTO RACING The father of the driver run over and killed by Tony Stewart told The Syracuse Post-Standard that “there’s no reason for” the crash that led to his son’s death. Kevin Ward Jr. was sent into the wall when his car was bumped by Stewart’s in a dirttrack race on Saturday night in Canandaigua, N.Y. Ward got out of the car and walked onto

the track, where he was hit by Stewart. Kevin Ward Sr. tells the newspaper that “Tony Stewart was the best damn driver by far on the track that night. Why he had to go up as high as he did and hog Stewart my son, there’s no reason for it.” When the 20-year-old Ward got out of his damaged car, he walked on the track and appeared to point at Stewart. Other cars drove past him, but

Machado put on DL with sprained knee

Stewart’s right-rear tire appeared to hit him and drag him along the track. “Apparently, Tony Stewart was the only one driving out there who didn’t see him,” Ward told the newspaper. No charges have been filed against Stewart, but they are still possible. Ward also addressed that in his interview with the newspaper, saying: “The one person that knows what happened that night is possibly facing 10 years in prison. Is he going to say what he done?” (AP)

Synch and/or swim IF YOU’VE NEVER BEEN TO SYNCHROSWIM , consider making this the year you (figuratively) dive in.

Creativity is a must, but actual swimming is not required, says program director Samantha May. Competitors “can just stand or cling to the wall or a float,” she says. SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS) Capitol Skyline Hotel, 10 I St. NW; Sun., 5 p.m., free.

TEAM: Nine members of the Baltimore synchronized swimming team known for kitschy summer extravaganzas. THE CONCEPT: A swinging tribute to Mary Pickersgill, who sewed the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the national anthem. The woman portraying Pickersgill will be backed by mixed-gender crew of seamstresses/ seamsters, says team captain Rick Wilson (above right, with mustache). “Fluid Movement has a lot of male swimmers. We accept everyone. If you want to wear a turban and put on nail polish, that’s wonderful,” he says.

The Docents: ‘The Way Things Go’ TEAM: Ten staff members of Glenstone, a modern art museum in Potomac, Md.

COSTUMES: Red retro swimsuits for the women, fetching blue briefs for the men, and sequins all around. STANDOUT PROP: Giant sewing needles, made out of pool cues.

THE CONCEPT: An aqueous Rube Goldberg device, inspired by the 1988 post-modern film “The Way Things Go.”

COSTUMES: Black, pink and silver bathing suits with matching headpieces. “We put our hair up in buns and keep them from falling out with Knox unflavored gelatin,” Horab says.

THE CONCEPT: Esther Williams-style glamour, with six women forming intricate patterns using their shapely gams.

STANDOUT PROP: Hot-pink stilettos. “They aren’t that hard to swim in, but walking on the pool deck can be treacherous,” Horab says.

#NoFilter

IN SHORT: #NOFILTER IS A COMEDY TOUR coming to Sixth and I Historic Synagogue on Saturday that

features comedians and YouTube stars Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart and Mamrie Hart (#NoRelation). The trio are friends who co-star in the indie movie “Camp Takota” (available for $9.99 at camptakota.com) and have affectionately been dubbed YouTube’s Holy Trinity by their millions of online fans. Here’s a guide to the silly social media mavens behind #NoFilter. RUDI GREENBERG (EXPRESS)

Grace Helbig

Hannah Hart

Mamrie Hart

She’s already a bona fide vlogging star with an army of 1.8 million subscribing to her pop-cultureminded “it’sGrace” YouTube channel, and now E! is trying to make her a TV star, too. Last week, the network hired Helbig to star in a pilot for a comedic talk show (currently titled “The Grace Helbig Project”) that could replace the departing “Chelsea Lately.” The timing couldn’t be better: Helbig has an advice book, “Grace’s Guide: The Art of Pretending to Be a Grown-Up,” due out in October that will appeal to millennials who aren’t quite ready for adulthood.

Hart, whose “MyHarto” YouTube channel has more than 1.3 million subscribers, is behind the webseries “My Drunk Kitchen,” which is sort of like “Drunk History” but way more dangerous. In each episode, Hart gets drunk and cooks a meal — to varying degrees of success. Sometimes, celebrities like Mary-Louise Parker stop by to make brownies. Just this week, “My Drunk Kitchen” became a book, filled with recipes, helpful tips to avoid drunk cooking catastrophes and plenty of jokes.

This Hart is not related to the other Hart, but they both love booze. Mamrie Hart (who has nearly 600,000 YouTube subscribers) hosts “You Deserve a Drink,” in which she picks a celebrity or friend who could really use a drink and makes one in their honor. After watching a video, you’re encouraged to make the drink, then watch the clip again and drink every time she makes a bad pun. Which is a lot. Like the others, Hart has a book deal: Her memoir and mixology guide “You Deserve a Drink” is due out next year.

And sometimes you get a week like this: As part of the AFI Silver’s Harold Ramis Remembered series (which includes “Stripes,” “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and “Groundhog Day”), 1980’s “Caddyshack” is playing Saturday. Remember: Just because you CAN recite all the dialogue along with the film doesn’t mean you SHOULD. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

Solidarity Session IPA Tasting Gordon Biersch, 900 F St. NW; Aug. 21, 5:30 p.m., $20-$25.

For the third year in a row, some D.C.-area breweries have joined together to do what they do best: brew. This year’s solidarity beer is a hop-forward session IPA coming in at 4.5 percent ABV. Brewed at DC Brau with the help of 3 Stars, Capital City Brewing, Mad Fox, District Chophouse, Beltway Brewing and more, the hoppy beer will be served at participating venues all week. But the official tasting at Gordon Biersch offers unlimited pours (plus other offerings), passed appetizers and a commemorative glass.

DC Beer Week, which kicks off its sixth go-round on local offerings, most of which didn’t exist during the first Beer Week in 2009. There are hundreds of events to choose from through Aug. 24, but here’s a small sample. For more events, go to dcbeerweek.net or check out The Post’s coverage at goingoutguide.com. Mikkeller Sour Session

Beer geeks Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Tour Takeover

The Partisan, 709 D St. NW; Mon., 6 p.m., free.

Denmark’s Mikkeller takes over the Partisan with a selection of rare, sour Spontan ales — with names like Spontanpeach and Spontangooseberry — along with heavier selections, such as the delightfully decadent Beer Geek Breakfast Imperial Coffee Stout, below.

For Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp festival, the California brewery pulled off an unprecedented feat by collaborating with 12 beer-makers on 12 very different brews. If you weren’t able to snag one of the 12-packs that flew off shelves, ChurchKey, above, will have all of them on tap, along with selections from some of the collaborators, including Cigar City, Firestone Walker and Allagash.

Blind and Bitter Scion Restaurant, 2100 P St. NW and Crios Modern Mexican, 2120 P St. NW; Aug. 21, 4 p.m., free.

Dcbeer.com is teaming up with Scion and Crios for an event that puts your palette to the test. The next-door neighbors will have 24 extra-hoppy beers to taste, but they won’t tell you what you’re drinking. Customers can pick their favorite, and the winning brewery gets a permanent draft line at Scion. Stay until 9 p.m. when the winner will be revealed.

Drunk and hungry BrewHaHa Old Ebbitt Grill, 675 15th St. NW; Aug. 22, 8 p.m., $65

Returning for a second year, Old Ebbitt Grill’s flagship event is a beer- and food-lover’s dream. Chefs from restaurants like The Pig, Fainting Goat and Lyon Hall will be paired with local breweries like Flying Dog, Atlas and Lost Rhino to create dishes that complement their respective brews. Richmond-based, Motowninspired band The Hi-Steps will keep you dancing.

Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery doesn’t distribute in the area, so while this beer dinner — featuring five courses paired with five sought-after Deschutes brews — may come with a steep price, it’s worth it for the rare chance to try beers you ordinarily couldn’t.

Two of the city’s top breweries — DC Brau and 3 Stars — face off, “Donkey Kong” style. Well, not exactly. Each brewery will showcase beers aged in oak barrels in a battle for supremacy (and a trophy behind the Boundary Stone bar, below). You’ll get to try beers like DC Brau’s ever-popular double IPA On the Wings of Armageddon out of a Caledonia gin barrel and 3 Stars’ flagship Pandemic Porter aged in a Woodford Reserve bourbon barrel.

Beer 101 Homebrew Demo Smith Public Trust, 3514 12th St. NE; Sun., 3 p.m., free.

DC Beer Week’s new educational component begins with the basics: homebrewing. Novice brewmasters will get the chance to see members of experienced local homebrew clubs HOPS and DC Homebrewers create a beer in this demo session. More experienced brewers will want to stop by for discounts on brewing kits from the 3 Stars Homebrew Shop.

How Government Affects Your Beer Policy, 1904 14th St. NW; Wed., 6:30 p.m., free.

This panel gathers industry experts — including Brewers Association COO Bob Pease, Right Proper co-founder Thor Cheston and Samuel Adams lobbyist Mick Nardelli — for a wonky talk about the ways government impacts beer, and what the industry needs to do for its advocacy efforts. As a bonus, your first beer is on DC Beer Week, while supplies last.

FRIDAY & SATURDAY

‘Pokemon: Symphonic Evolutions’ Warner Theatre, 513 13th St. NW; Fri. & Sat., 8 p.m., $36.50-$66.50.

SATURDAY

You have the rare opportunity to watch symphonic video game history unfold this weekend when “Pokemon: Symphonic Evolutions” makes its world premiere at the Warner Theatre. The show is designed as a revue, of sorts, of the music from the “Pokemon” series’ two decades of existence, complete with all-new orchestral arrangements timed to scenes from the “Pokemon” video games.

Throwing Shade Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW; Sat., 9:30 p.m., $20.

Comedy duo Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi describe their podcast, “Throwing Shade,” as “a weekly look at all the issues important to ladies and gays,” though “with much less respect than the issues deserve.” That’s a pretty accurate assessment of the pair’s act, which was birthed at the Upright Citizens Brigade and has manifested itself into videos for Funny or Die. Head to their show at the Black Cat and you can throw shade back at them.

Hot August Music Festival Oregon Ridge Park, 13401 Beaver Dam Road, Cockeysville, Md.; Sat., 10:30 a.m., $59.

The Hot August Blues & Roots Festival may have rebranded this year to the simpler Hot August Music Festival, but the music is still both bluesy and rootsy. The undercard is a strong lineup of up-and-coming acts, such as roots rockers Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds, funky big band Turkuaz and bluegrass act Cabinet. But you’ll likely attend for one of the headliners: Philly-based indie-rockers Dr. Dog, the reunited Nickel Creek or the band behind “Wagon Wheel,” Old Crow Medicine Show, above.

Johnnyswim

You could call Nashville, Tenn., singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson a country artist, but “country” only scratches the surface of the music found on his stellar sophomore album, “Metamodern Sounds In Country Music.” (Take the psychedelic single “Living the Dream.”) What Simpson does is closer to Gram Parsons’ cosmic folk rock — and far from the Jason Aldeans of the world. Simpson will be joined by opening act Cris Jacobs (of Baltimore’s The Bridge).

The Nashville, Tenn.-based husband-and-wife duo Johnnyswim brings the catchy folk-pop of its latest album, April’s “Diamonds,” to D.C. Hamilton, 600 14th St. NW; Mon., 7:30 p.m., $20.

Free For All: ‘The Winter’s Tale’ Shakespeare Theatre’s Sidney Harman Hall, 610 F St. NW; Aug. 19-31, various times, free.

This year’s free show is a revival of “The Winter’s Tale,” which the company staged in 2013. To secure your free tickets to one of 16 performances from Tuesday through Aug. 31, you’ll need to enter the theater’s online lottery or be among the first 200 people who line up in front of the theater at 4 p.m. on show dates. Lois Lowry says Meryl Streep, left, with Jeff Bridges, brought new complexity to the Chief Elder in “The Giver.”

The gifts of ‘The Giver’ Author Lois Lowry says the movie adaptation’s cast elevated her work FILM It took nearly 18 years for Lois Lowry’s most celebrated young adult novel, “The Giver,” to come to the big screen. The now-amajor-motion-picture book tells a story about a future society that, to spare the human race from pain and suffering, has elimiLowry nated all emotion. Only one person — The Giver (played by Jeff Bridges) — maintains a record of the human experience in his mind, and it’s time for him to pass those memories on to Jonas, The Receiver (Brenton Thwaites).

And now that the film version of her beloved book is (finally) arriving in theaters on Friday, Lowry says she would like to go back and make just one small revision. “The movie made much more complex the character of the Chief Elder,” the head of the society, Lowry says. “And then once they cast Meryl Streep — who never would have taken the role the way I wrote it in the book — the quality of her acting, just the turn of her eyes or the way her mouth curves, it was astounding to watch her. Now I wish I could go back and write the book the way she performed it.” Bridges was attached as a producer from the beginning, though he had originally intended to cast his father, Lloyd, who died in 1998, as The Giver. Other casting choices shed new

light on characters that had existed only in Lowry’s head. “The two who kind of surprised me were Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgard [as Jonas’ parents], both of whom are noted for their beauty,” Lowry says. “With [Skarsgard] there are websites dedicated to how hunky and sexy he is, and they’re both cast in these roles where there is no sexuality and a coldness to them. They’re cast against type, and that’s really interesting.” Having spent a week on the set, the 77-year-old author says she might like to change one other thing. “After they had finished filming they asked me down to watch some post-production stuff,” Lowry says. “I found it all quite fascinating. I want to be young again and go back and study filmmaking.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

her husband (the third was 1947’s “Dark Passage”). The movie inspired the 1981 song “Key Largo” by Bertie Higgins.

Lauren Bacall, who died on Tuesday at 89 in New York, had The Look — cool and mysterious — and she had the sound, courtesy of that irresistibly low and throaty voice. “She was sexy, she was saucy, and she projected a sense of intelligence,” says film historian Leonard Maltin. Here are five key performances in Bacall’s long career in film. JOCELYN NOVECK (AP)

‘To Have and Have Not’ (1944) Bacall made her film debut opposite Humphrey Bogart when she was just 19 years old. The two fell in love on set. And if that weren’t enough to immortalize the movie, there was Bacall’s classic line: “You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and … blow.”

‘How to Marry a Millionaire’ (1953) This lighthearted comedy teamed Bacall with Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable, as models aiming to land rich husbands. Also a great one for quotes. “Wealthy men are never old,” Bacall’s character wisely notes.

Lauren Bacall made four films with her husband, Humphrey Bogart.

‘The Mirror Has Two Faces’ (1996) Bacall played Barbra Streisand’s vain, obnoxious mother — and scored an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.

DO YOU DRINK A LOT OF ALCOHOL? This project (NIH Study #14-AA-0042) aims to study a trial drug which may decrease alcohol use. We would like to determine whether this drug is safe and acceptable when given along with alcohol. Successful volunteers will be: - In good health and drug free - Between the ages of 21 and 65 - Willing to come for two outpatient visits and three inpatient visits (each inpatient visit includes four overnight stays at the NIH Clinical Center).

“I’m sorry. I should’ve risen above. Deleting this from my devices for a good long time, maybe forever. Time will tell. Goodbye.” @ZELDAWILLIAMS tweets her decision to step away from her popular social media accounts after users @PimpStory @MrGoosebuster posted manipulated images of her father, Robin Williams, that appeared to show him with bruises around his neck and blamed her for his suicide. Twitter later suspended the trolls.

“The sound is all melancholy, alternative, and adorable, like if She & Him became just Him, and He was sort of lonely and bummed about it.” AMY ZIMMERMAN AT THEDAILYBEAST.COM enjoyed actor Michael Cera’s debut solo album, “true that,” which was posted to indie music website Bandcamp last Friday and went relatively undiscovered until his “Superbad”-costar, Jonah Hill, tweeted about it Tuesday.

Participants will have a free medical evaluation and be compensated for doing the study. Transportation to and from all visits will be provided. Study enrollment will be limited to 12 participants. For more details, email cpnresearch@mail.nih.gov

MEDIUM

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may want to explore new ways of doing things that you already know how to do. The issue, of course, is self-improvement. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You have the capacity to understand the most difficult concepts that are introduced today — and you can explain them to others, as well. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Put one foot in front of the other, and you’ll find yourself making progress without having to think too much about it! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You will have to continue along your current path even though certain unanticipated dangers are likely to emerge. WEDNESDAY’S SOLUTION

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Your willingness to put yourself in a new situation and attempt that which is yet untried will give you a distinct advantage.

WEDNESDAY’S SOLUTION

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) The view from where you are may not accord with your expectations. See if a few minor adjustments don’t give you what you’re after. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) A different perspective can be quite valuable to you. You’ll discover something about yourself and another that surprises you.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may have to work long and hard to pick the lock of another’s innermost feelings. Ultimately, access will be granted.

TODAY: With minimal clouds, low humidity, and afternoon temperatures in the low 80s what’s not to love? Should be a nice day to ride the bike to work or eat lunch outside. Don’t mind the breezy westerly winds too much; that’s just the high pressure settling in overhead.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may be in the shadows for a time, confident that you will perform well when the light shines on you. And so you shall! TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’re not really after what others seem to think you most need. You can position yourself for success with skill. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) That which is cumbersome is best left by the wayside; you may have to move quickly and remain flexible and aloof throughout much of the day.

Justin Bieber pleaded guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor charges of careless driving and resisting arrest after his January arrest in Miami Beach following what police initially called an illegal street drag race. The 20-year-old’s plea deal with prosecutors, detailed at a court hearing, includes a 12-hour anger management course, a $50,000 charitable contribution and a $500 fine. The deal allows Bieber to avoid a driving under the influence conviction. The pop singer’s defense attorney said Bieber, who was not present at the hearing, had already given the $50,000 to a local children’s charity. (AP)
