A 78-year-old Florida woman tried to fly on an international trip from Detroit Metropolitan Airport with almost $41,000 in cash hidden inside her girdle, bra and carry-on bag, federal authorities said. A complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Detroit said the woman was trying to board a flight April 2 to the Philippines. She initially said she had $200 in cash but submitted a form declaring she had $1,200, prompting questions. (AP)

Among the incoming threats along H Street and Benning Road NE during a series of passengerfree practice trips last week were what Reid calls the “cut-in cars.” “I just had one cut from the left side of me to make a right turn,” Reid said. Earlier that morning, the crew of trained drivers trying to complete some of their “stick time” — the required hours at the controls in live traffic — was delayed by a fatal single-car crash. Strict new curfew law takes effect in Baltimore

Police are searching for a suspect after a 2-year-old girl was shot and killed Sunday afternoon when she was struck by a bullet fired outside the Landover, Md., townhouse she was inside, Prince George’s County police said. The toddler was taken to a local hospital where she died. She was shot after a dispute between two men outside the home, police said. One of the men went to his car to get a gun and then fired multiple shots into the home where police believe he thought the other man was at the time. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Baltimore’s children and teenagers will be spending more time indoors under a new curfew law that took effect Friday. City council members voted overwhelmingly for the law in June. Among the nation’s strictest curfews, it requires children under the age of 14 to be indoors by 9 p.m., and teenagers between 14 and 16 years old to be inside by 10 p.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m. on weekends. Violators will be taken to local curfew centers staffed with counselors, and their parents could face fines of up to $500. (AP)

THE DISTRICT On the iconic poster of Rosie the Riveter, the woman working in a factory during World War II, she rolls up her sleeve to proudly reveal her muscular arm. But Crena Anderson, a real-life riveter, never showed off when she went to work to make airplanes during the war. Her husband was fighting; her brother had been killed in the Air Force; she had taken just a short leave of absence to have a baby. She was worried about finding a babysitter, earning enough money, doing her job well — and about her arms. “It made me big muscles,” she said. “I was ashamed to wear a short-sleeved dress.” Anderson, now 89, reminisced Sunday about the unique challenges and opportunities of women who worked during the war with four of her fellow female factory workers — women who now refer to themselves as Rosies.

Dorothy McMann, 89, talked about the novelty of coming from rural Augusta County, Va., to work in an aircraft factory in Baltimore. “It was something I never dreamed of doing, but after I learned how, I loved it,” she said. Ruth Kline Staples had a copy of a 1943 magazine. Her photograph was on the cover, showing her shoveling dirt at the railroad yard. The five women, who attended two events in the D.C. area Sunday, were marking the launch of a nationwide program for the country’s remaining living Rosies. The program, run by the organization Thanks! Plain and Simple, encourages cities to pick a project that Rosies can do with younger generations. The goal is twofold — to educate young people about the role of women in World War II, and to involve the Rosies, many of whom have become isolated, in community projects. So, expect nothing? No. This doesn’t mean that having low expectations is the path to happiness, because the model also shows that such pessimism leads to discontentment while you wait for an outcome.

WASHINGTON In making the case for U.S. airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq, President Barack Obama is drawing on the doctrine he outlined less than three months ago, when it seemed he was trying to avoid potential U.S. military action anywhere. In a May speech at the U.S. Military Academy, Obama said he would use military force under two scenarios: a direct threat against Americans or U.S. interests, and a humanitarian crisis on a scale that he said would “stir the conscience.” On Thursday night, when he announced that he had authorized airstrikes and humanitarian airdrops in Iraq, Obama argued that both conditions were being met. The airstrikes have targeted militant vehicles and mortars firing on Irbil — home to a U.S. consulate and about three dozen American military trainers — and also are aimed at limiting Islamic State fighters’ advances and helping Iraqi forces regain control. U.S. and Iraqi aircraft also have dropped humanitarian aid for the minority Yazidis, thousands of whom have been stranded on a scorching mountaintop since the Islamic militants seized Sinjar, near the Syrian border, last week. The deteriorating situation appears to fall within the parameters for military action Obama outlined. Kevin Ward Jr.’s car spun twice like a top, wheels hugging the wall, before it plopped backward on the dimly lit dirt track. In a sport steeped with bravado, what happened next was another familiar, but treacherous, move: Wearing a black firesuit and black helmet, the 20-year-old Ward unbuckled himself, climbed out of the winged car into the night and defiantly walked onto the track at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. He gestured, making his disgust evident with the driver who triggered the wreck with a bump: three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart.

Ward, a relative unknown compared to NASCAR’s noted swashbuckler, was nearly hit by another passing car as he pointed with his right arm in Stewart’s direction. As he confronted Stewart in his passing car, disaster struck. Ward was standing to the right of Stewart’s familiar No. 14 car, which seemed to fishtail from the rear and hit him. According to video and witness accounts, Ward’s body was sucked underneath the car and hurtled through the air before landing on his back as fans looked on in horror. Ward was killed. Stewart, considered one of the most proficient drivers in racing, dropped out of Sunday’s NASCAR race at Watkins Glen, hours after Saturday’s crash. And the sport was

On Sunday, Ontario County, N.Y., Sheriff Philip Povero said that criminal charges have not been ruled out, but that investigators also don’t have any evidence at this point to support criminal intent. “Stewart is free to go about his business,” Povero said. Things to know about O’Bannon vs. NCAA ruling On Friday, a federal judge ruled the NCAA violates antitrust law by prohibiting athletes from being paid. There’s a lot to be determined in the wake of the ruling, which will be appealed by the NCAA, but here are a few things to keep in mind. CINDY BOREN ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

There’s no pay-for-play This decision doesn’t usher in an era of pay-for-play or endorsement deals. Money is to be held in trust until the athletes’ college careers end. While they are students, they can receive only a scholarship or another figure covering the full cost of attending college.

Some things won’t change The NCAA can still set rules governing eligibility, the number of scholarships and practices. It still has the power to keep athletes from signing endorsement deals.

But change could come soon Because the changes will not be stayed while the NCAA is appealing, the next recruiting cycle is likely to be the one affected. That means athletes who enroll in colleges on or after July 1, 2016.

Other factors Unionization could gain steam. And there is an antitrust lawsuit filed that argues the NCAA cannot cap player compensation at the value of an athletic scholarship.

America confesses: We love TV TELEVISION Manjula Stokes has twice sworn off television, once throwing a set off her deck in a fit over an exhusband’s sports obsession. Now she’s a devotee of programs like “Downton Abbey,” “Mad Men,” “Survivor” and “Masters of Sex.” The teacher from Santa Cruz, Calif., illustrates a subtle change in society’s attitude toward television. The medium is growing in stature, propelled by both art and technology. More worthy programs are available at a time when viewers are becoming more comfortable setting up their own schedules to watch. “I feel it’s more like reading a good book,” Stokes said. “I think it’s more serious as an art form.” A CBS survey of 700 people in the U.S. with Internet and television connections last year found that 28 percent said they’re watching more television than

they did a year ago. That may not seem like much, but there’s a long history of people saying they are watching, or plan to watch, less TV — even as Nielsen measurements proved the opposite is true. In other words, liking television is becoming more socially acceptable. “You can go to a sophisticated party in New York City now and people will be talking about television programming, not the latest art film or the latest play,” said David Poltrack, CBS’ veteran chief researcher. “You can go to a bar in a lower socioeconomic neighborhood and they’ll be talking about television. They may be talking about different programs, but they’ll be talking about television.” For years, polls uncovered a certain shameful attitude toward watching television. A Gallup poll in 1990 found 49 percent of people said they spent too much time watching television. When asked in 2000 how much time they spent watching TV the previous day, 84 percent of
