Motorcades of shame

If you haven’t noticed, traffic in downtown D.C. has been snarled this week by the many motorcades of the African heads of state attending the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. But it could be much, much worse. Some of those who skipped the event (or weren’t invited) are notorious for headline-making motorcade drama in their home countries. S.D. NOT INVITED

President Robert Mugabe Zimbabwe

Mugabe’s motorcade, known as “Bob and the Wailers,” has run into and killed people who failed to get out of its way. A Ghanaian Chronicle article cites 24 vehicles, seen off and greeted by women “thrilling and dancing in dresses … emblazoned with his face.” Also: It’s illegal in Zimbabwe to make rude gestures or statements toward a Mugabe motorcade.

not reply to questions Tuesday about the status of Barry’s tickets or whether the owner of the lot, a city contractor, was permitted to release the car. By Tuesday afternoon, the number of outstanding violations associated with Barry’s car in a Department of Motor Vehicles database had dropped from the 21 citations listed on Monday to 14. The fines for some of the violations still listed had declined — an April 3 violation for failure to display current tags carried a $205 fine Monday but had been reduced to a $65 fine Tuesday. Foster said a “hypoglycemic attack” was responsible for the 78-year-old’s collision, which put Barry in a hospital overnight. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has closed the D.C. nightclub where “The Wire” actor Anwan Glover was stabbed early Sunday, saying security guards stood by as an unruly crowd interfered with officers trying to secure the scene. Police say two men who tried to remove a tattoo from a housemate’s arm in Hebron, Md., were charged with attempted murder. Officials say the victim was beaten Monday before the men tried to carve the tattoo off, then set fire to it. The scene was too neat. I had just arrived at the shattered remains of a mosque in Gaza City that had been hit by an Israeli airstrike. There was rubble, glass and metal everywhere. But on a patch of ground in front of the structure was a small carpet; on top lay piles of burned, ripped Korans, Islam’s holy book. The symbolism was almost too perfect. It was clear that someone had placed them there to attract sympathy for the Palestinian cause. A TV crew spotted the pile and filmed it. Mission accomplished. In almost every conflict, each side tries to manipulate foreign journalists into covering its grievances, to look at the destruction through its lens. But Israelis and Palestinians take this to a whole new level. The Israelis also are slick. From their media war room, they run one of the most sophisticated operations to sway journalists. During the initial ground incursion, the military was livetweeting propaganda, vowing to crush Hamas, providing quotes for newspapers to publish. In Gaza, it’s a different kind of manipulation, more subtle. Take a recent attack on a neighborhood in Gaza City. Hamas blamed an Israeli strike; Israel said Hamas accidentally fired a mortar into the neighborhood. Children died. In the road was a small pool of blood. I noticed a child’s slipper in the middle. The slipper was intact. There were no bloodstains. And next to the slipper, a black plastic toy gun. Again I noticed a TV cameraman drawn to this powerful image. I moved on. Caught in the Israel-Gaza propaganda war

Archaeologist Andrei Plekhanov last month surveys the crater discovered in the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia.

Don’t blame aliens for Siberian crater Researchers suggest that global warming may be behind the giant mystery SCIENCE Researchers have long contended that the epicenter of global warming is also farthest from the reach of humanity. It’s in the barren landscapes of the frozen North, where red-cheeked children wear fur, the sun barely rises in the winter and temperatures can plunge dozens of degrees below zero. Such a place is the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia, translated as “the ends of the Earth,” a desolate spit of land. By now, you’ve heard of the crater on the Yamal Peninsula. It’s the one that suddenly appeared, yawning nearly 200 feet in diameter, and made several rounds in the global viral media machine. The adjectives most

Saddam Hussein’s tomb damaged in Islamic State fighting in Iraq

often used to describe it: giant, mysterious, curious. Scientists were subsequently “baffled.” Locals were “mystified.” There were whispers that aliens were responsible. Nearby residents peddled theories of “bright flashes” and “celestial bodies.” There’s now a substantiated theory about what created the crater. And the news isn’t so good. It may be methane gas, released by the thawing of frozen ground. According to a recent Nature article, “air near the bottom of the crater contained unusually high concentrations of methane” — up to 9.6 percent — in tests conducted at the site July 16, says Andrei Plekhanov, an archaeologist at the Scientific

“Its rims are slowly melting and falling into the crater. You can hear the ground falling, you can hear the water running; it’s rather spooky.” ANDREI PLEKHANOV, an archaeologist at the Scientific Centre of Arctic Studies in Salekhard, Russia, talking about the Siberian crater to the science publication Nature

Centre of Arctic Studies in Salekhard, Russia. Plekhanov, who led an expedition to the crater, says that air normally contains just 0.000179 percent methane. The scientist said the methane release may be related to Yamal’s unusually hot summers in 2012 and 2013, which were warmer by an average of 5 degrees Celsius. “As temperatures rose, the researchers suggest, permafrost thawed and collapsed, releasing methane that had been trapped in the icy ground,” the report stated. Plekhanov told Nature the conclusion is preliminary. He would like to study how much methane is contained in the air trapped inside the crater’s walls. Such a task, however, could be difficult, as the crater’s rims are slowly melting and falling into the crater. Geochemist Hans-Wolfgang Hubberten of Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute said that he’s never seen anything like it. “Gas pressure increased until it was high enough to push away the overlaying layers in a powerful injection, forming the crater,” he said. Some scientists contend the thawing of such terrain, rife with centuries of carbon, would release incredible amounts of methane gas and affect global temperatures. “Pound for pound, the comparative impact of methane gas on climate change is more than 20 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period,” the Environmental Protection Agency said. As the Associated Press put it in 2010, the melting of Siberia’s permafrost is “a climate time bomb waiting to explode if released into the atmosphere.” As two additional craters have also recently been discovered in Siberia, researchers worry the craters may portend changes to local Siberian life. Wiser cuts to U.S. team

A surplus of receivers

Coach Gruden feels ‘really good’ about the Redskins’ talented group of wideouts REDSKINS As the Redskins go about installing their offense under new coach Jay Gruden and new offensive coordinator Sean McVay, one thing has been clear during training camp — they’ve got a lot of weapons at wide receiver. “We are very fortunate to have the receiving corps that we have,” Gruden said. “I feel really good about where we are.” And why not? Gruden has the NFL’s leader in receptions in Pierre Garcon, the speedy DeSean Jackson, versatile Andre Roberts, wily veteran Santana Moss and a host of players jockeying for what could be six receiver roster spots. “It’s very dangerous and it’s very scary,” Jackson said. “I’d rather be on the team that has

all the weapons.” The surprising acquisition of Jackson in April helped lead to the glut of receivers. Jackson, who had 1,332 receiving yards in 2013, has a chance to prove that last year’s numbers weren’t just a result of the Eagles’ system. “What I look forward to is to continue to go out there and be known as one of the best playmakers in this league,” he said. The person probably hurt most by Jackson’s arrival is Roberts, who signed a four-year deal in March to slide into the No. 2 receiver spot. But the former Cardinals wideout is taking everything in stride. “We’re all out here to work together,” he said. “I think all the receivers love [Gruden’s] offense. I think we’re going to

Hamstring issues Starting free safety Ryan Clark left Wednesday’s practice early after tweaking his hamstring. Wide receiver Pierre Garcon was sidelined again after aggravating a hamstring pull suffered last week. Clark downplayed the injury and said that he wanted to make a speedy return, and play in Thursday’s preseason opener. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

be throwing it a little bit more and we’re definitely going to be helping the running game out.” The bottom of the receiver depth chart holds a certain amount of intrigue as well. With Leonard Hankerson on the physically-unable-to-perform list, Aldrick Robinson has stepped

in and performed well — snagging a long touchdown pass during Monday’s practice with the New England Patriots — while rookies Ryan Grant and Rashad Lawrence have shown flashes. “Aldrick has had a great camp,” Gruden said. “He’s made big play after big play and that doesn’t go unnoticed. We have a lot of guys that are competing for the four, five, six and seven spot.” Are there enough balls to keep everyone happy? That’s to be determined, but right now, it’s a good problem for the Redskins to have. “The sky is the limit. Honestly, it is,” Jackson said. “And at any given time a defense is going to have to be accountable for multiple guys — not just one guy, not just two guys, but four or five guys every play.” ELLIOTT SMITH (EXPRESS)

The Wizards’ John Wall and Bradley Beal were two of the three cuts when the U.S. roster went down to 16 on Tuesday. But here’s who should have gone before the Wizards duo. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

3 Damian Lillard Trail Blazers point guard

The position is stacked and Coach K can’t keep them all. Wall is the better pure point guard, but Lillard’s shooting probably helped him.

2 Gordon Hayward Jazz small forward

The injury to Paul George means the U.S. is in search of a small forward, but Hayward isn’t nearly as talented offensively as Wall and Beal.

1 Mason Plumlee Nets power forward

Plumlee, below, averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds a game last year. The U.S. team lacks size, but is Plumlee worth a roster spot?

Spurs hire WNBA star to staff

The San Antonio Spurs hired WNBA star Becky Hammon, left, as an assistant coach Tuesday. She joins South Carolina assistant Lisa Boyer, who served on John Lucas’ staff in Cleveland in 2001-02, as women to coach in the NBA. Hammon spent some time around the Spurs during last season’s run to the title, and coach Gregg Popovich says she made a strong impression. (AP)

Span: A reliable source

verbatim

“A Redskin is a football player. A Redskin is our fans. The Washington Redskin fan base represents honor, represents respect, represents pride.”

DENARD SPAN HAS BEEN THE NATIONALS’ MOST CONSISTENT HITTER THE PAST MONTH. Over the

30 games leading up to Tuesday night’s series opener against the Mets, Span posted a batting average of .379, and he reached base in each of those games. But it’s not just his hot hitting streak that’s helped spark Washington’s offense. He’s balanced his patience at the plate with superb base running. “He’s amazing. Denard does what he does,” infielder Anthony Rendon said. “He’s an ideal leadoff guy.” Here’s how Span has gotten it done. JASON BUTT (FOR EXPRESS)

Stealing bases

As a leadoff man, Span isn’t looking to hit for power. He’s content hitting singles, so that his teammates in the middle of the lineup can drive him in. As a result, he’s struck out only 46 times before Tuesday, and just 15 times during his 30-game on-base streak. He said he’s been able to track the ball better from opposing pitchers lately, which helped him record 44 hits and five doubles during this stretch. “I try to barrel the ball and hope that I can get it away from somebody,” Span said.

Span had 39 walks entering Tuesday’s game — tied for secondmost among NL center fielders. This puts him on pace to walk 64 times in 2014 — 17 more than his total last season. He’s shown an ability to draw walks even when he’s gotten behind early in the count. Fifteen of Span’s walks this season came after he fell behind 0-1. “I just come here every day and study the pitchers we’re facing that day and try to get as prepared as I can,” he said.

Prior to Tuesday, the 30-year-old had stolen 23 bases this season, putting him on pace for a careerbest 34. Span has been more aggressive lately. He took five bases in the six games leading up to Tuesday. “It sets the table for the guys in the middle,” manager Matt Williams said. “Certainly it helps if he has the ability to steal second base to get in scoring position with nobody out in the top of the first. It just puts pressure on the other club.”

Nationals land lefty reliever Thornton The Nationals claimed left-handed reliever Matt Thornton, left, off waivers from the Yankees and put catcher Wilson Ramos on the paternity list before Tuesday night’s game. To fill Ramos’ roster spot, the Nationals recalled catcher Sandy Leon from Triple-A Syracuse. The club also transferred righthander Taylor Jordan to the 60-day disabled list. The 37-year-old Thornton went 0-3 with a 2.55 ERA in 24⅔ innings across 46 appearances with the Yankees this season. Ramos and his wife are expecting their first child. Biogenesis owner to plead guilty Bosch among group arrested with ties to MLB steroid scandal BASEBALL The former clinic owner accused of selling performanceenhancing drugs to Alex Rodriguez has agreed to plead guilty in what prosecutors called a wide-ranging conspiracy to distribute steroids to both major league ballplayers and high school athletes. The charges filed Tuesday against former Biogenesis of America owner Anthony Bosch and six others marked one of the biggest salvos yet in a case that has dragged on for nearly two years. The case has sparked lawsuits, mudslinging and suspensions against numerous major leaguers, including Rodriguez. Also charged was Yuri Sucart, 52, a cousin of Rodriguez who the

New York Yankees third baseman has said provided him with steroids from 2001 to 2003 when he played for the Texas Rangers. Sucart and the others are accused of acting as recruiters, setting up meetings between the athletes and Bosch, who introduced himself as “Dr. T,” authorities said. Professional athletes paid up to $12,000 a month for the drugs provided by Biogenesis, while high schoolers paid up to $600 a month. All the clients were promised that the substances would not be found through drug testing, prosecutors said. “He is not a doctor,” Mark R. Trouville, chief of the Miami Drug Enforcement Administration office, said of Bosch. “He is a drug dealer.” U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer said Bosch did not have a medical license, making what happened all the more dangerous. Major League Baseball was

Orange Crush with triple sec, orange juice and Sprite. Tiki options are offered Thursdays through Saturdays until the weather gets cold, and they’re available at half price during happy hour on Thursdays from 510 p.m. A few blocks away, Adam Bernbach of Doi Moi crafts elevated versions of Tiki standards. His tropical concoctions incorporate a wide selection of house-made ingredients — including roasted banana syrup, peanutinfused bourbon and tamarind soda — as well as creative spins on the classics: fresh pineapple juice runs through a soda siphon to give pina coladas a

COCKTAILS You’re lounging on the white sands of a Polynesian beach when you slurp the last of your mai tai. You motion to a cabana boy and settle back into your lounge chair while you await another fruity beverage. “Next stop, Chinatown,” he responds. OK, so maybe you were daydreaming while uncomfortably sandwiched between two commuters on a Metro train. Reality bites. For those looking to leave the real world behind for a minute, may we suggest an authentic tropical cocktail? The Tiki fad of the ’50s and ’60s is being rekindled at spots throughout the city where classic rum-andfruit-juice concoctions meet delightfully kitschy decor. At Jack Rose Dining Saloon, you’ll find an upstairs Tiki bar where the campy decor is inspired by that of Trader Vic’s and Don the Beachcomber; reed mats and carved Tiki masks line the walls all summer long while classic cocktail umbrellas adorn drinks fit for a hula girl. “We’re trying to provide as much of an escape here as we can,” says beverage director Trevor Frye, who makes his own citrus-infused vodka and mixes it in cocktails like the

hint of carbonation. Farmers Fishers Bakers in Georgetown provides 2-foot-long straws in its scorpion bowls, made for sharing and served with a riverfront view. You can taste your way through classic zombies (limit two per guest, lest the high alcohol content turn you into one), mai tais and a new collection of frozen blended drinks. For eight years, The Majestic Cafe in Old Town has been serving up a slice of luau heaven with a Tiki drink menu that rotates every summer and is served in tacky ceramic mugs. (The Galeophobic and Proud, for example, is made with Cruzan light rum, Blue Curacao, a limelike fruit called calamansi and citrus syrup, and arrives in a shark head with floating Swedish Fish.) “I think anyplace is Tiki City,” bartenderowner Todd Thrasher says. “Tiki is really more a state of mind than a place.” By that logic, we’re just an umbrella cocktail away from cooling island breezes. Bookalokal expands to the District It wouldn’t surprise me if Evelyne White knew how to say “dig in!” in 35 different languages. The overachiever is a Harvard Business School grad, an ex-Wall Street banker and founder of Bookalokal, a service that connects amateur chefs with hungry audiences, which she managed to expand to 35 countries in two years (bookalokal.com). “I wish it was 100,” White says. She founded Bookalokal in 2012 while living in Brussels, where she often held dinner parties for locals, ex-pats and travelers. White launched the D.C. chapter in April with a root beer tasting from local producer Thunder Beast, and future local events include a crash course on home bartending from “Marshall” ($50) and an Egyptianthemed dinner served by “Aida” ($50). These days there are two types of people in the world: Those who accept that Iggy Azalea’s breakout hit “Fancy” is the Song of the Summer, and those desperate to find anything to replace it. Here’s our list of catchy, at least semi-danceable earworms more than worthy of SotS consideration. ALLISON STEWART ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

‘Two Weeks’

Miranda Lambert feat. Carrie Underwood

Drake

Grimes feat. Blood Diamonds

This formless but addictive mid-fi track is the third excellent Drake-related track this summer. It features some of his most dexterously rapped verses, and sounds a little like “Started From the Bottom” if that song had no hook, and Drake had recorded it in the bathroom at a Chili’s.

Grimes’ transition from elusive electro-gamine to pop-star-in-waiting continues with this slinky, mainstream-circling jam. Originally written for Rihanna, Grimes and Blood Diamonds snatched the New Wave/EDM combo for themselves in a track they call their “summer jam.”

There’s still room in bro-country summer for this “Thelma and Louise”-style ditty, even though Underwood, above right, and Lambert display so little emotion they seem less like two huge country stars than two sassy robots with hair extensions.

Vulture reports NBC has renewed “Welcome to Sweden”

This assured, bass-heavy slow jam may be the track that finally breaks the British R&B/pop singer stateside. It also has a video that tries really hard to make you think of Aaliyah in “Queen of the Damned.” You can stream her debut album, LP1, on iTunes Radio now before its release Tuesday.

“No, that’s not a retro ad from 1950.” JULIA CARPENTER AT WASHINGTONPOST.COM/BLOGS/ SHE-THE-PEOPLE is not amused by

the latest ad campaign from Nine West. The shoe company launched its “Starter Husband Hunting” collection, which features leopardprint toe pumps and meoww peep platform booties, Friday. “It’s hunting season,” the campaign boasts. “If you’re looking for Mr. Right or Mr. Right Now, we have a shoe for that.”

“She’s timeless and ageless and has more sexual oomph in her well-manicured little finger than Miley Cyrus has in her entire yoga-toned body.” JOANNA ROBINSON AT VANITYFAIR.COM sings the

praises of Helen Mirren after her Tuesday appearance on “Live! With Kelly and Michael.” The 69-year-old, who was promoting her Oprah Winfrey-produced film “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” demonstrated twerking with show co-host Michael Strahan.

“Don’t do it! I hear the grounds are haunted by Maggie Smith between seasons.” COMMENTER PAPERTIGER AT AVCLUB.COM warns of the

dangers of bidding on the auction announced Friday by Christie’s Auctions and Private Sales. Interested parties can bid for the chance to spend a night in Highclere Castle, which serves as the set for PBS’s “Downton Abbey.” Bidding starts at about $16,000 and is open through Aug. 14.

“Yes, the dinosaur is Photoshopped, but Goldblum is not.” TARYN HILLIN AT HUFFINGTONPOST.COM delivers the

photo every “Jurassic Park” fan has been waiting for. When Jeff Goldblum, who plays Dr. Ian Malcolm in the 1993 film, attended a wedding in Toronto over the weekend, the happy couple didn’t miss the chance to embellish the classic running wedding party photo by adding a T. rex.

“For the first time in my 25 years in the biz, a children’s book leaves me speechless.” @ELAWREADS, a children’s book editor and publisher, tweets her dismay at “My Parents Open Carry,” a book detailing the day in the life of a 13-year-old and her parents, who both carry guns. “The Strongs join a growing number of families that are standing up for their 2nd Amendment rights by open carrying and bringing gun ownership out of the closet and into the mainstream,” the book’s description reads. Authors Brian Jeffs and Nathan Nephew are the co-founders of Michigan Open Carry, a gun rights advocacy group.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your life and the lives of others may be temporarily affected by a common threat, but by day’s end, you can increase the level of safety.

you want from another isn’t likely to be granted today — or tomorrow, either. Still, you can surely maintain a healthy dynamic.

TODAY: There will be partly sunny skies this work day, with a moderate chance of afternoon showers and storms (40 percent) as a cold front approaches. We should see sufficient cloud cover to steady temperatures. Winds start the day from the south and southwest at 5 to 10 mph, but then shift to come from the northwest late in the day.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may be puzzled by the way the day progresses, but don’t let yourself be distracted by the unusual! Focus on assigned tasks. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You can give another the help he or she needs without hindering your own progress in any way. Is a partnership in the making?

ADORABLE

FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT

Take that, JLaw and Emma Stone

They really couldn’t pick a china pattern The New York Post reported that Michael Strahan and Nicole Murphy’s breakup, made public on Friday, was the result of irreconcilable fights over money. A source told the newspaper that Murphy, ex-wife of actor Eddie Murphy, was unwilling to sign a prenuptial agreement. Strahan and Murphy had been engaged for five of their seven years together.

Taylor Swift stopped by Boston Children’s Hospital last weekend to visit a young cancer patient. She played an impromptu acoustic set for 6-year-old Jordan Nickerson, who asked Swift to play her favorite song. Nickerson sang along to Swift’s rendition of her hit “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Swift this year has stepped up her efforts at fan interaction, having already made a surprise appearance at a fan’s bridal shower in Ohio in April. Last year, Swift’s management team was left scrambling after hundreds of fan letters for the country singer were found in a garbage bin in Nashville, Tenn. (EXPRESS)
