Turtle’s big run to freedom is hampered by its being a turtle

Sheriff’s officials say a Washington state man led police on a chase across two counties because he was bored. The 30-year-old man had no warrants or prior convictions and had a valid driver’s license when he took off through an intersection near Olympia late Saturday. The pursuit lasted for more than an hour before the suspect hit a fence and was apprehended. Police say the man appears to have instigated the pursuit for fun. (AP)

with nowhere to go. That’s when White Bird took her in. The situation was urgent. As was the case for “Mr. B,” who made quite the name for himself while he was at White Bird. Abandoned at an auction in Montana after the auctioneer and bidders found out he was blind, “Mr. B” was taken in by White Bird and spent time with children. Huckabee-Mayfield wrote a book about his life, “I Am Mr. Bowersox,” which was published last year. “We just don’t worry about physical issues here. Everyone has their problems, but they deserve good lives,” she said. JUSTIN MATTINGLY (RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH)

VIRGINIA Off a thin dirt road, horses roam in a pasture while others are tended to inside. They’re blind and they’re crippled, many recovering from years of neglect. “They’re just different. And we had the opportunity to do something,” said Jorg HuckabeeMayfield, who founded the White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue with her husband. The horse rescue has seen an increase in numbers the past few years, but despite the growing demands, volunteers and workers at the rescue are careful to treat the special-needs horses with extra love and care, she said. The couple started the nonprofit in 2003 and has been in Burkeville in Nottoway County since 2005, after a short stint in Northern Virginia. The barn space there simply couldn’t accommodate the number of horses they wanted

to take in, so 11 years ago, they bought a bigger farm — about 50 acres — and came to Burkeville, which is just over an hour’s drive from Richmond in Southside Virginia. Huckabee-Mayfield walks through the stable, stopping at each of the 21 horses to give them a treat while telling their story. The horses love her back, following her directions and showing their appreciation for the treats by rubbing their heads against her. “They really become like family,” she said. The reasons that the horses are taken in vary. Many people don’t have the money to properly care for their horses. Sometimes a horse is inherited by a son or daughter who doesn’t have an interest in the horse. Other times, the horse is simply neglected and the state seeks a new home for it. “Rescues should be a safe haven for horses, so the inquiries sort of just mount up,” said Tom Mayfield, Huckabee-Mayfield’s husband. local 3 myths about the heat We can’t make any promises about cooler weather in the immediate forecast, but we can entertain you with some surprising facts about heat and humidity. (TWP) Fans don’t cool room temps If you leave fans running when you’re not home, the only thing they do is waste energy. Fans make us feel cooler because they create a breeze, which evaporates the moisture on our skin more efficiently than stagnant air.

A test of wills and won’ts REGION One hundred degrees is a test. And most of us fail. When the heat dome descends, we cut and run, cowering in a Freon cloud, eating at our desks, denying the dog his walk. When temps cross that meteorological sound barrier of 99 degrees, we move, if at all, in a climate-controlled chain-of-custody from one air-conditioned zone to the next. Not Elyse Salpekar. She’s a heat denier. As temperatures soared into convection-oven territory Monday — awarding Washington with the highest heat index in an overheated nation — the 19-year-old blithely ran reps in the full sun in an otherwise deserted park in Silver Spring, Md. It’s what she does every day to keep fit for the coming soccer season at Grinnell College, where she’ll be a sophomore. The heat is just another obstacle to ignore. “I don’t really think about it,” Salpekar said as rivulets of sweat ran from her chin. “Saying it’s too hot is just another excuse, like it’s too cold or it’s too rainy.” Heat deniers aren’t climate

They are the seasonal equivalent of the guys who wore shorts all through the Polar Vortex. For them, it’s not the heat, it’s the hype. Research fellow Jonathan Alfuth, who moved to Maryland two weeks ago from Memphis, Tenn., couldn’t fathom all the fuss. “I’m coming from a location where [a] 105 heat index has been the norm for the last couple weeks,” he explained. “It’s hot [here], but it could be worse.” But it probably won’t be, at least not this week. Forecasters, who were counting up the degrees Monday as Washington crossed the 100-degree mark for the first time in four years, said this sweltering pattern has probably peaked out, offering the relative relief of the high 90s in coming days. And then we get August. Some embrace the heat to keep from freezing. Watch the chattering teeth of a movie crowd

Police have arrested a suspect in a fatal carjacking at a Capitol Heights gas station. Prince George’s County police said in a news release that a tip from a citizen helped detectives identify Demarko Wheeler of Washington. They had posted a video clip online of the suspect and offered a reward. Wheeler is charged with murder in the shooting of 68-year-old Alonzo Jackson on Wednesday morning, just after Jackson had filled up the tank of his car. Police say Wheeler took the car, which was later found burned in D.C. Jackson died several hours after the shooting. Officers arrested Wheeler on Sunday in Washington. (AP)

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s administration says it will move quickly to ensure that thousands of felons hoping to cast ballots in November’s election will be able to vote. McAuliffe spokesman Brian Coy said Monday that the administration expects by the end of this week to restore the voting rights of the roughly 13,000 felons who registered to vote under the Democratic governor’s April executive order. Virginia’s Supreme Court struck down an order to restore voting rights to more than 200,000 Friday, saying governors cannot restore rights en masse, but must do so on a case-bycase basis. (AP)

Authorities say an off-duty sheriff’s deputy was involved in a shooting when two men tried to rob him. Prince George’s County police said two men approached the off-duty deputy, who was not in uniform, while he was walking in Largo, Md., early Sunday. One of the men, who police say was wearing a mask and armed with a handgun, said it was a robbery and fired at the deputy. The deputy, who was armed with his duty weapon, fired back. The two men fled in a vehicle driven by a third person. Police are investigating the assault against the deputy. The deputy was identified Monday as Sgt. Keenan Connley. (AP)

Police investigate the site in Ansbach, Germany, where a failed asylum-seeker from Syria blew himself up.

Fourth attack in a week leaves Germany reeling ISIS suicide bomber: Germans ‘won’t be able to sleep peacefully’ ANSBACH, GERMANY A Syrian man who tried unsuccessfully to claim asylum in Germany pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group and vowed Germans “won’t be able to sleep peacefully anymore” in a cellphone video before blowing himself up outside a wine bar, wounding 15 people, authorities said Monday. The assailant set off a backpack laden with explosives and shrapnel Sunday night after being refused entry to a crowded music festival in the Bavarian city of Ansbach because he didn’t have a ticket. It was the fourth attack to

shake Germany in a week, and the second claimed by ISIS. Three of the attacks were carried out by recent immigrants, rekindling concerns about Germany’s ability to cope with the estimated 1 million migrants registered entering the country last year, an influx that has since dwindled as the flow of newcomers slowed. A video on the cellphone of the suspect, a 27-year-old Syrian identified only as Mohammad D in line with German privacy laws, showed him declaring loyalty to ISIS and announcing a “revenge act against Germans because they are standing in the way of Islam.” Sunday’s attack culminated a week of violent assaults. On July 18, a 17-year-old Afghan asylum-seeker wounded five people with an ax before being

killed by police near Wuerzburg in an attack also claimed by ISIS. On Friday, the 18-year-old son of Iranian immigrants went on a rampage at a Munich mall, killing nine people and wounding dozens. Authorities say he was undergoing psychiatric treatment and had no known links to terrorism. And on Sunday, hours before the Ansbach attack, a Syrian man killed a woman with a knife in Reutlingen before being captured by police in an incident not believed to be linked to terrorism. “Naturally people … are questioning whether they should change their routines,” Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said. “We should not. ... We should continue to live our free lives.” DAVID RISING, KIRSTEN GRIESHABER

Morning-after pill may not aid heavier women HEALTH Research is raising new concerns that the most popular type of emergency contraception — the morning-after pill made from the hormone levonorgestrel, which prevents ovulation — is less effective in women who weigh more than 165 pounds. In Women’s Health magazine, Elizabeth Dawes Gay notes that in 2013, the European-made Norlevo added a warning on its packaging saying that the morning-after pill begins to lose effectiveness in women who weigh 165 pounds and isn’t effective at all for women over 175. Although Norlevo is chemically identical to U.S. products — such as Plan B — the Food and Drug Administration said the data was inconclusive and didn’t require a warning. A new study led by Alison Edelman of Oregon Health & Science University compared the effectiveness of a levonorgestrel-based contraceptive among women considered to be of “normal” weight and those considered obese. The researchers found that it took a double dose of the drug to raise the obese women’s hormone level to that of the women of normal weight. Can heavier women compensate by taking two pills if they need emergency contraception? “As a researcher, it’s not something we can recommend yet,” Edelman told Gay. Venezuela’s collapse plays out at the border

New Zealand vows to kill all its rats by 2050

CUCUTA, COLOMBIA It wasn’t much, but it was all she could afford — a sack of laundry detergent, a package of tampons and 18 rolls of Colombian toilet paper. Marys Rosalba, 50, was carrying the prized goods back to Venezuela with a tight grip and a fierce look that said: Don’t even think of trying to rob me. Up ahead on the bridge over the Tachira River was the border, and on the other side an oil-rich country of empty cupboards and supermarket lines stretching for blocks. Cucuta, long known as a city of contraband goods, has suddenly become a lifeline for desperate shoppers from neighboring Venezuela, and one of the starkest illustrations yet of its panicky, gnawing hunger. Tens of thousands of Venezuelans like Rosalba have streamed across the border for basic goods in recent weeks as their country’s economy collapses under the weight of the world’s highest inflation rate and chronic mismanagement, which has produced shortages of everything from diapers to milk. Just days before Rosalba made her meager purchases, more than 120,000 Venezuelans poured across the border as both countries agreed to briefly reopen several crossings that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro

ordered shut last August. An additional 35,000 shoppers did the same on July 10. It was a short reprieve. In recent days, border traffic has been much more limited. Colombian authorities — worried the growing crowds could spiral out of control — say they want to end the ad hoc crossings and reopen the border on a long-term basis. Both governments say they are in negotiations to do so, although Maduro administration officials have bristled at the Colombians’ depiction of Cucuta as a “humanitarian corridor.” They insist the claims of spreading hunger are part of a smear campaign by

Venezuela’s opposition. But on Cucuta’s border bridges in recent days, where a smaller but steady trickle of people are allowed to pass, stories of hardship and indignity appeared to be the only thing in abundance. “Over there, you wait in line all day for a kilo of rice, and sometimes it runs out before your turn comes,” said Carlos Ortega, 68, a retired geology professor. His pension was good for only a few pounds of beans, sugar and flour. “This government has looted our country,” he said, glaring at the Venezuelan border guards. “And they’re still doing it.” NICK MIROFF

New Zealand takes its wildlife seriously, and many of its unique animals are under assault from species that came to the island nation 200 years ago. On Monday, Prime Minister John Key announced that New Zealand has adopted the “ambitious goal” of eradicating its soil of rats, possums, stoats and other invasive mammals by 2050. New Zealand already spends $40 million yearly to eradicate invasive species and educate the public, and it has cleared more than a third of its predators. But Key suggested that the nation needs more than the traps, airdropped poison and fencing now in use. He said $2.3 billion is earmarked for the new plan. (TWP)

Discord greets Democrats At convention’s start, Sanders boosters boo Clinton’s candidacy POLITICS The floor of the Democratic National Convention was awash with anti-Hillary Clinton sentiment and sporadic protests as it opened Monday. Every mention of her name drew boos from the supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders, her unsuccessful rival in the primaries. They toted signs railing against trade pacts and distracting from the speakers onstage. TV news cameras and anchors swarmed each uprising, broadcasting it live and furiously tweeting the latest chants. The barrage of activity only seemed to encourage the rabble-rousing, which continued for more than an hour Monday afternoon. It was a circus-like scene, with the party chair absent and Sanders’ ranks feeling emboldened even though the convention is not contested. The event officially began after Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake stepped in for outgoing Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz to gavel in the convention at about 4:15 p.m. Wasserman Schultz, a member of Congress from South Florida, stayed offstage following heavy criticism over the leak of a trove of embarrassing DNC emails that showed that the supposedly neutral committee had favored

Clinton over Sanders. The decision to eliminate the public role of Wasserman Schultz was one of many dramatic developments during a day of discord that threatened to distract from a lineup of high-profile speeches Monday night meant to convey Democratic unity. The FBI said it was investigating the email breach, which triggered much of the intra-party friction over the weekend. Sanders was cheered by supporters at a rally Monday afternoon when he smiled and told the crowd that the exit of Wasserman Schultz would “open the door” for new leaders to take the reins. Minutes later, when Sanders encouraged Democrats to elect Clinton and her running mate,

Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, the crowd started booing loudly. Sanders tried to talk them back, arguing that Republican nominee Donald Trump “must be defeated.” Volunteers from the Sanders campaign were trying to pressure convention organizers for roll call votes on the presidential and vice presidential nominations, which would stretch out the process and highlight pockets of disagreement. The Clinton campaign said there will be a roll call vote tonight on the nomination of Clinton to be president. It was unclear whether Kaine’s nomination would be a simple voice vote. PHILADELPHIA Dozens of Bernie Sanders supporters delivered emotional speeches. Marijuana legalization advocates carried two huge, inflatable joints. Revolutionary communists chanted that Hillary Clinton should be in jail. One week after the Republican Convention in Cleveland saw many more police than protesters, it was a hot — 97 degrees — and hectic scene Monday outside the Democratic National Convention. And it was just the start. Dozens of demonstrations, protests and rallies are planned to continue through Thursday. Major demonstrations never developed in Cleveland. But Philadelphia is another story, as what appear to be hundreds of left-leaning demonstrators have flooded the city. Gun control activists are here. Police brutality protesters are here. Immigration activists are here. Some of them hope to disrupt. Others plan to be arrested. And the most vocal contingent hopes to upend the nomination of Hillary Clinton. In a rally at City Hall that stretched for hours Monday, supporters of Bernie Sanders gathered to declare they would not support Clinton. “You’d have to be crazy not to be worried about the possibility of [Donald] Trump or Hillary becoming president,” said computer programmer Amanda Sullivan of Weston, Fla. Cubs deal for Chapman while Nats refuse to put top prospects on trading block NATIONALS Washington has long wanted Aroldis Chapman in the back of its bullpen. The Nationals pursued him when he first defected from Cuba in 2009 and at various points since. With a fastball topping out at 105 mph, Chapman could have stabilized a position lacking a long-term solution. But when the Yankees’ closer and 2017 free agent became available ahead of next Monday’s trade deadline, the Nationals did not outbid the Cubs. Chicago will give up their top-rated prospect, shortstop Gleyber Torres, proven bigleague right-hander Adam Warren, and two more players for Chapman, according to reports from ESPN and FanRag Sports.

As the Post’s Barry Svrluga reported last week, the Nats were unwilling to part with any of their top prospects — Lucas Giolito, Trea Turner, Victor Robles and Reynaldo Lopez. If the Cubs deal is any indication, getting Chapman would have required one of those untouchables, plus two or three other players as well. MLB.com and others were reporting Monday that Chapman’s deal to the Cubs is complete, but not official, because Chicago wants to work out a contract extension before giving up such a haul. Multiple people in the industry have suggested that an extension would be in the range of $60 million over four years. The Nationals were unlikely to sign

Chapman to a deal like that. In one regard, any maneuver for Chapman would have raised questions off the diamond. Chapman was suspended 30 games under MLB’s new domestic violence policy after an offseason incident with his girlfriend. Yankees’ left-hander Andrew Miller will likely be available, too, though the Nationals already found the asking price to be too high. Miller does come with two years of team control, as does Royals closer Wade Davis, who reportedly may also be available. But if Miller’s price is high, Davis’ will be, too. Less-vaunted closing options have already been moved: Fernando Rodney was traded from San Diego to Miami, and

Brad Ziegler went from Arizona to Boston. In Milwaukee’s bullpen, Jeremy Jeffress and left-hander Will Smith could be enticing trade options. However, in Felipe Rivero and Sammy Solis, Washington already has two lefties with setup stuff. Philadelphia’s Jeanmar Gomez and White Sox closer David Robertson could become available, and the Astros may be willing to deal relievers for prospects. Still, finding a true closer may be difficult now. The Nationals will have options, though those options will probably not throw harder than 100 mph or come with the same e notoriety — for better or worse — that Chapman would have. e.

massive cover-up of doping tests. They are Nikita Lobintsev, who won Olympic silver in 2008 and bronze in 2012, Vladimir Morozov, a bronze medalist from the 2012 games, and world junior record holder Daria Ustinova. Russia’s top Olympic official, Alexander Zhukov, told Russian agency R-Sport he believed 13 Russians would be ineligible due to previous doping bans. In addition to swimmers, the 13 are likely to include cyclists, weight

lifters, wrestlers and rowers. It remains unclear whether there could be legal challenges to the IOC criteria. A similar IOC measure, known as the Osaka Rule, which would have prohibited athletes who had received doping bans from competing in the subsequent Olympics, was declared invalid by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Zhukov said the IOC violated the “principle of equality” because its new criteria applied only to Russia.

Russian Swimming Federation president Vladimir Salnikov told the state Tass agency that the four swimmers removed from its team “have the chance to appeal to CAS.” Efimova’s agent, Andrei Mitkov, told Russia’s Sportbox website that she intended to appeal if she were not allowed to compete. Now, with the Aug. 5 opening ceremony approaching, it is up to the remaining 27 international sports federations to vet Russian athletes. JAMES ELLINGWORTH (AP)

OLYMPICS World swimming’s governing body FINA said Monday that seven Russian swimmers have been barred from the Summer Olympics, including three linked to recent allegations of a major doping cover-up by authorities in Russia’s government. Yulia Efimova, the reigning world champion in the 100-meter breaststroke, is among four Russian swimmers withdrawn by the country’s swimming federation because they previously served doping bans, FINA said. The others are Natalya Lovtsova, Anastasia Krapivina and Mikhail Dovgalyuk. The International Olympic Committee said Sunday that Russian athletes with previous doping bans would not be allowed to enter the Rio Games. That followed the IOC’s decision not to ban the entire Russian team over allegations of state-sponsored doping. FINA said three more swimmers were identified by World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLaren when he examined evidence that Russian government officials ordered a

Galette tears an Achilles for a second straight year

League OKs Josh Gordon to report to Browns camp

Washington outside linebacker Junior Galette will miss a second straight season after tearing his left Achilles tendon during a Sunday workout, two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed. Galette missed the 2015 season after rupturing his right Achilles in the preseason. He had made a near complete recovery and anticipated full availability for training camp. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Commissioner Roger Goodell informed troubled Cleveland wide receiver Josh Gordon on Monday that he can rejoin the team in training camp. The league said once Gordon, 25, meets clinical requirements, he can participate in all preseason activities. Gordon was suspended for a year in 2015 for multiple violations of NFL drug policies. He will be suspended for the first four games this year. (AP)

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday that, after a sevenmonth investigation, the NFL concluded that Peyton Manning did not use human-growth hormone or other performanceenhancing drugs. The probe surrounding the former quarterback was spurred by “The Dark Side: The Secret World of Sports Doping,” a documentary that aired in December on the now-defunct Al Jazeera America network. In the film, a pharmacist named Charlie Sly implied that Manning took human growth hormone that was prescribed by an Indianapolis anti-aging clinic and shipped to Manning’s wife, Ashley. Sly has since recanted his statements, and some of the other athletes mentioned in the documentary — the Nationals’ Ryan Zimmerman and the Phillies’ Ryan Howard — have since sued Al Jazeera for libel. According to an NFL statement, Manning and his wife were “fully cooperative with the investigation.” The league also received pertinent medical records, Schefter reported. The league’s statement also says the NFL will continue to investigate allegations from the documentary against four current linebackers: Green Bay’s Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers, Pittsburgh’s James Harrison and free agent Mike Neal. STUDIES SHOW ...

Overcoming the excuses of summer HEALTH If you feel less inclined to exercise, eat well or maintain an otherwise healthy lifestyle over the summer months, you may regret it by the time fall comes around. Many experts say that viewing summer as a respite from wellness could have lasting effects on your overall health. Here, Angela Lemond, a registered dietitian nutritionist and the president of the Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and Colleen Palomaa, the fitness manager at VIDA Metropole in the District, offer the most common excuses that they get from patients and trainees this time of year — and how they respond.

‘I’m on vacation’ When the weather is nice, people tend to want to take some time off, travel someplace new and let loose a little. “A lot of people want to overindulge,” Lemond says. “They want to drink, and they want to eat — they want to have no cares whatsoever.” She recommends keeping up a balanced diet and drinking in

moderation when on vacation. And there are plenty of ways to stay active on vacation without feeling like you’re doing work. Palomaa suggests hiking or beach volleyball. If those options aren’t available at your destination, she recommends that vacationers do simple exercises like yoga and running — which don’t require equipment — wherever they go.

‘I’m at my summer weight — now it’s time to enjoy myself’ Palomaa has trained many people who say that their goal is to get fit for the summer so that they can show off their flat stomachs and chiseled arms at the beach. But once summer arrives, they revert to their original habits. “Exercise is not all about vanity,” she says. Plus, if you allow yourself to regress to a lower level of fitness, it’s more work to regain your beach body once the next summer season rolls around. It makes more sense, Palomaa says, to live a consistently moderate lifestyle.

‘It’s too hot outside’ It’s the classic summer excuse. And it’s certainly true that you’ll need to stay extra-cautious about hydration, body temperature, fatigue, sunburn and the like when

Palomaa says she’s been shocked by the number of people who complain that their workout regimen impedes their social life in the summer. The logic follows that better weather brings more people to bars and restaurants after work ends. And, with some jobs, work lets out early on Fridays, leaving the afternoon for merriment. A little extra food and drink can’t hurt, Palomaa says, but she advises her trainees to bring their friends, family and coworkers to the gym, not the bars. A group workout or exercise class could maintain the social aspect while encouraging an active lifestyle. Even doing this just one out of every three happy hours, Palomaa says, could make a noticeable difference.

An analysis of 56 studies on the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, published last week in Annals of Internal Medicine, suggests that we don’t need to limit our intake of healthy fats. Department of Veterans Affairs researcher Hanna Bloomfield defined the diet as one that met two criteria: 1) having no restriction on total fat intake; 2) having two or more of the following: use of olive or canola oil; high fruit and vegetable intake; high consumption of legumes; high grain and cereal intake; moderate red wine consumption; moderate intake of dairy; and low consumption of meat, with increased intake of fish. The diet appeared to reduce a person’s risk of heart issues and to have benefits in connection with breast cancer and Type 2 diabetes. So how much fat can you eat? Bloomfield says “a lot,” but only the healthy fats.

exercising in the heat. For those who might want to avoid these hassles, Palomaa has two ways to circumvent the heat: swimming and morning exercise. Plenty of pools, even outdoor ones, have lap lanes. (All D.C. pools are free for residents.) Alternatively, some gyms, including VIDA, where Palomaa works, have “endless pools,” in which you swim against a current — like a treadmill, but for swimming. She also suggests exercising in the early morning, when temperatures are relatively

She got dumped. What can I say?

BEN CLAASSEN III (FOR EXPRESS)

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

Mom’s declining and he’s denying Q. My husband is getting increasingly frustrated with his mother’s memory loss. He lashes out at her and takes it as a personal insult (blaming her that she’s not paying attention or that she doesn’t care enough, etc.). He is making a sad situation worse, and I don’t know if I can watch this go on for the next however many years. FRUSTRATED WIFE I’d focus on treating the root of his problem — likely fear and sadness — rather than the symptoms (irritability). It’s probably easier emotionally for him to deny that she’s aging and experiencing cognitive decline. There’s a wide range of memory loss in aging adults. Hers could be normal, but it could be something that needs to be tested more extensively

and might be helped through intervention. A concrete plan of action might help things feel less out-of-control and scary for your husband. And to the extent that this could turn into more significant problems with anxiety and depression — not to mention damaging his relationship with his mom and with you — he should consider getting professional support himself.

her fiance of one year and she’s really upset. I want to comfort her, but I have no idea how. She’s 29; I’m 23 and have never been in a serious relationship, so I can’t relate to her situation, and I’m afraid of saying the wrong thing. Plus, she’s 300 miles away from D.C. I gave her the name of a psychologist I used to see. Any other suggestions? WANTING TO HELP

Fear of saying the wrong thing often results in people saying nothing at all and even disappearing, which is infinitely worse. There’s no wrong thing as long as you’re listening in a supportive way and respecting her feelings. Wrong things tend to be dismissive (“He wasn’t good for you anyway!”); invalidating (“It’s not that bad — some people’s fiances have died suddenly.”); self-centered (“I know how you feel — my prom date ditched me.”); or impatient (“You’ve got to get over this!”). You need not have the experience of a serious relationship to empathize and — this is important — ask her what might be helpful to say or do. Go with your instincts and be the friend you’ve probably always been. That alone will go a long way. Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of the book “The Friendship Fix” (friendshipfix.com).

entertainment VIDEO GAMES Historical markers have become treasure-filled stops on the “Pokémon Go” trail: “Pokémon Go” players hunting for fictional creatures on their smartphones are now visiting real-life memorial plaques, statues, mosaics and landmarks, ranging from a Civil War battlefield in Chancellorsville, Va., to a Hells Angels clubhouse in New Zealand. Some don’t bother to linger at these PokéStops, staying just long enough to stock up on the virtual balls they’ll use to bonk and capture the next Pokémon.

But for others, the GPS-powered “augmented reality” game is heightening awareness of the history and geography of their neighborhoods. “Before, I was just going from Point A to Point B, but now I’m learning things,” said 15-year-old Jaiden Cruz as he walked by a plaque Wednesday in downtown Providence, R.I., marking where Abraham Lincoln spoke at an old railroad hall in 1860. The plaque is a PokéStop, and shortly before Cruz arrived, another player dropped a “lure module” that attracts Pokémon to the site.
