One local pizza chain is paying for employees to get tattoos of its logo

THE DISTRICT Jovante Wood has nearly two dozen tattoos, but this is his first company logo. He got his last tattoo, an outer space motif that takes up most of his forearm, two weeks ago. Now he’s getting a 3-inch ampersand that’s part of the logo of &pizza, the D.C.-based company where he’s worked for 11 months. “I like the business and how welcoming it is,” the 22-year-old said as a tattoo artist injected ink into his bicep. “This is probably my best job, ever.” So, he says, he decided to make his commitment to the company permanent. And he is not the only one: More than 50 &pizza employees have the company’s ampersand, which it has trademarked, tattooed on their bodies. One employee has it etched onto her ribs. Others have it emblazoned on their chests, necks, wrists and behind their ears. The practice has become so popular that chief executive Michael Lastoria now foots the bill for any worker

— and the occasional customer — who wants to get inked. “We’re not doing this because we want [employees] to swear their allegiance to us like we’re some insane dictator,” said Lastoria, 36, who co-founded the fast-casual eatery four years ago. “We’re doing it because we listen to our people. They love the symbol, they love the look of it and they love what it stands for.” The ampersand, he says, represents the company’s willingness to listen to its employees. It was

Paying for tattoos, he says, is another way of showing employees that he welcomes their ideas. “Outside of the fact that the ‘&’ is part of our brand, we don’t look at this as a branding opportunity,” Lastoria said. “What makes this special for us is that the idea came from our people.” As corporate logos go, &pizza’s ampersand is relatively innocuous, employees say. Even if they end up leaving the company on bad terms, well, the symbol could mean just about anything. “It’s just a a really cool idea,” said Brittney Wilkins, 23, a shift leader who last year got a red ampersand behind her right ear. “Even if I don’t work here forever, I won’t be upset. TRANSPORTATION For Metro riders, one disruption ends, another begins. A stretch of the Blue and Yellow lines near Reagan National Airport, closed for maintenance since July 5, is due to reopen today. And a longer section of tracks in the same area will be shut down for a week, through Monday, cutting off direct rail access between the airport and downtown Washington. In the second month of Metro’s nearly year-long SafeTrack maintenance program, the third of 15 planned track-work projects is wrapping up: The Blue and Yellow lines between Braddock Road and National are set to open again, restoring a direct subway route to the airport from the southern parts of the two lines, in the Alexandria area. Now Metro will close a portion of the Blue and Yellow lines north of National, between the airport and the Pentagon City stations. While those two stations will stay open, the station between them, Crystal City, will be shuttered. For travelers arriving at National and trying to get downtown via Metro, shuttle buses will run from the airport to Pentagon City, where riders can board trains. For riders headed to National from downtown, Pentagon City will be the last rail stop. From there, shuttles to the airport will be available. Buses also will

serve the Crystal City station, running to and from the airport and Pentagon City. “Passengers should expect additional congestion on the airport’s roadways and in its parking facilities,” the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority warned in a statement Monday. Besides the shuttle buses, MWAA said, “there will be increased ground transportation options, including taxis.” Like the week-long maintenance shutdown between the airport and Braddock Road, the “surge” Metro plans to begin today is bound to impact tens of thousands of airport patrons. Last year, close to 2 million travelers passed through National in July, according to MWAA. So

far this year, compared with 2015, officials said, passenger traffic at the airport is up almost 2 percent. And about 20 percent of travelers who arrive at National to begin their trips normally use Metro to get to the airport. As they did during the previous SafeTrack project, Metro and Northern Virginia jurisdictions will increase the number of buses on regular routes to help meet the needs of commuters who decide not to ride the rails. During earlier projects, some commuters also turned to cars, bicycles and services such as Uber and Lyft. Still, since the first SafeTrack project began June 4, along the Orange and Silver lines between the Ballston and East Falls Church stations,

crowds and confusion, as well as long waits, have been common in subway work areas. The 15 SafeTrack projects, involving major infrastructure upgrades, are part of Metro’s effort to revitalize and improve safety in the 40-year-old subway, which has become prone to dangerous malfunctions after decades of maintenance neglect. General Manager Paul Wiedefeld ordered the overhaul after he took charge of Metro in late November. Just weeks before he arrived, Metro’s record of hazardous failures had grown so extensive that the agency became the first major transit system in the country to be placed under direct federal safety oversight. Trial begins for Frederick, Md., man charged in slaying of ice cream truck driver

A 27-year-old man who worked for the Democratic National Committee has died after being shot in Northwest. Police said Seth Conrad Rich died Sunday after he was shot multiple times. Acting Capt. Anthony Haythe of the Metropolitan Police Department’s homicide branch said Monday that Rich lived in the area. Haythe said there were no witnesses, and police had no suspects. One charge dismissed in latest Freddie Gray trial BALTIMORE A judge dropped an assault charge Monday against a Baltimore police officer charged in the death of a black man injured in a police transport van. Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams dismissed the second-degree assault charge against Lt. Brian Rice, the highest-ranking of six officers — three white and three black — charged in the 2015 death of Freddie Gray. The move comes as people across the country protest two fatal shootings of black men by police in Louisiana and Minnesota last week. The judge said the prosecution’s basis for the assault charge was that Rice used the van in

After prosecutors asked Nero about his defamation lawsuit against prosecutors and a joint defense agreement he entered with other defendants, Williams ruled that Nero was hostile to the prosecution, allowing them to ask him leading questions. Two bailiffs were killed and a deputy sheriff wounded in a shooting Monday afternoon at a courthouse in St. Joseph when an inmate being transferred from a cell grabbed a gun and opened fire, authorities said. The gunman was shot and killed by other bailiffs, but only after he had shot four people, two of them fatally, Sheriff L. Paul Bailey said Monday. In addition to the bailiffs and the deputy, the inmate shot a civilian in the arm. “I lost some friends today,” Bailey, who was visibly shaken, said during a press briefing. “So I’m here with a heavy heart.” While Bailey said investigators were still piecing together what happened in the corridor of the Berrien County Courthouse, he said that the incident occurred after “a fight occurred with that inmate on the way to the courtroom.” After this fight, the inmate — who was not named — was able to disarm one of the officers and use that gun to begin shooting, Bailey said. Ultimately, the attacker “was taken down by two other bailiffs” who shot and killed him, Bailey said. The people injured and killed by the attacker were not immediately identified, Bailey said, as authorities sought to make sure their families were notified.

Chuck Heit, the Berrien County undersheriff, said both bailiffs were armed. He also said they were both “deputized by the sheriff,” which makes them the latest law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty — their deaths coming just days after a gunman killed five police officers in Dallas. The wounded deputy was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital and treated in the emergency room, Bailey said. This deputy was in stable condition,

Heit said. Bailey had said that “several” civilians were hurt, including the one who was shot, but he did not discuss how they were injured. All of them were in stable condition at Lakeland, he said. Britain’s new prime minister brings stability as country faces radical change LONDON As the race to become Britain’s next prime minister narrowed, a veteran member of the Conservative Party’s old boys’ club characterized contender Theresa May as a “bloody difficult woman.” Kenneth Clarke didn’t know his comments, made before a television interview, were being recorded, but he didn’t back away from them once they were made public. Neither did May. “Ken Clarke says I am a bloody difficult woman. The next man to find that out will be Jean-Claude Juncker,” the next prime minister

Although she did not campaign in favor of Britain leaving the EU — analysts note she was clever in hedging her bets, perhaps with an eye on making a play for the

nation+world leadership position either way — she will now get on with the task of implementing the Brexit. “The British people have spoken and there will be a different future for the U.K. — different but a brighter, more optimistic future,” she said. “We may have to go through some difficult times to get there, but get there we will.” Just a month ago, May was far down the succession list in the Tory party, behind Boris Johnson, a loquacious former mayor of London and one of the strongest proponents of a Brexit, and George Osborne, the finance minister and a Brexit opponent. But with Johnson and rival Michael Gove having flamed out and stalwarts in the “remain” camp, such as Osborne, having declined to run, May suddenly emerged as the favorite. Because she is the sole remaining candidate, she will be crowned the leader without having been elected by either the party or the public. And May has ruled out calling an early election, meaning she could hold the post until 2020. U.S. to send 560 more troops to Iraq to fight ISIS MILITARY The United States will send 560 more troops to Iraq to transform a freshly retaken air base into a staging hub for the long-awaited battle to recapture Mosul from Islamic State militants, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Monday. The new American forces should arrive in the coming weeks. Most of the engineers, logistics personnel, security and communications forces will concentrate on building up Qayara air base, about 40 kilometers south of Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city. They will assist Iraqi forces planning to encircle and eventually retake the biggest city anywhere that has fallen under ISIS control. The extremist group captured Mosul in the summer of 2014. It has used the city as a main headquarters since. “These additional U.S. forces will bring unique capabilities to the campaign and provide critical enabler support to Iraqi forces at a key moment in the fight,” Carter said on an unannounced visit to the country. It is President Obama’s second U.S. troop increase in Iraq in the last three months, and it brings the total U.S. force authorization there to 4,647. POLITICS Gov. John Kasich finds himself in an odd situation these days. He’s responsible for helping to safeguard a Republican convention he will not speak at, a nominee he will not support and an arena he probably will not set foot in. “It’s going to be strange,” Kasich said. Even stranger: When he arrives Sunday in Cleveland for the convention, he will be the one leading Hillary Clinton in a half-dozen battleground states — not presumptive nominee Donald Trump — according to a recent Ballotpedia poll. “I told somebody I should’ve quit earlier — I might have won!” he joked during an interview at the governor’s mansion in Columbus. Things aren’t going badly for a guy who dropped out of the presidential race in May, having won just one state — his own — and whom some Republicans see as a bit too self-righteous. Kasich, 64, left the race with a high favorable rating and has come to symbolize the party’s anti-Trump faction. His team can see the 2020

But that’s what Ruth Bader Ginsburg did this weekend in a New York Times interview as she slammed Donald Trump. “Now it’s time for us to move to New Zealand,” she said, recalling what her late husband would have said. She is known for pushing the bounds of a justice’s public comments, but some say she went too far this time. “I find it baffling actually that she says these things,” said Arthur Hellman, a University of Pittsburgh law professor. “She must know that she shouldn’t be.” Her comments could affect the court if she had to recuse herself from a case involving Trump. As political commentator Jeff Greenfield tweeted: “If there’s a redo of Bush v. Gore, how does Ginsburg not recuse herself, given her Trump comments?” As Greenfield notes, Ginsburg was a part of the court that decided who the president was when the 2000 election was thrown to the Supreme Court, so this isn’t uncharted territory. Hellman said Ginsburg’s comments could muddy the waters when it comes to decisions not just involving Trump but also his policies — something that could come up should he win the presidency. No celebration. That’s exactly how Duncan, 40, wanted it to be. He was never going to have the Kobe Bryant retirement tour. He was never going to be feted from city to city. That’s simply not how Duncan went about his career or his life. His nickname is “The Big Fundamental.” His signature shot was a mid-range jumper that banked in with a ruthless efficiency. Duncan was unquestionably the best player of his generation — the NBA’s bridge from Michael Jordan to LeBron James — and one of the game’s 10 best players ever. Where he fits inside that group is up for debate, but he’s the starting power forward

Powerful creatures battle at gyms, which are digital arenas located at real points of interest. The app is free to download and, like the franchise that spawned it, massively popular. Twenty-four hours after its release on the U.S. market, Pokémon Go had been installed on more Android phones than the

GAMES Early Friday morning, 19-yearold Shayla Wiggins hopped a fence to walk along the bank of Wind River in Riverton, Wyo. She was looking for Pokémon, the collectible cartoon critters that debuted in Japan in 1996. What Wiggins found instead would reduce her to tears and spark a police investigation. A week before her discovery, Wiggins’ search for Pokémon would have been met with concern or ridicule. But Pokémon Go, which was released in Australia and New Zealand on Wednesday and rolled out in the U.S. the day after, has turned looking for video-game characters in the real world into a real hobby. For the uninitiated, Pokémon Go is a new augmented-reality game that invites players to hunt for digital Pokémon on their smartphones, placed using GPS and an algorithm by the company Niantic Labs. The catch is that the game, unlike the original Nintendo series and most video games, requires physical exploration. By trading a Game Boy for a smartphone, Pokémon Go can filter reality into a giant game world. The effect is part birdwatching, part geocaching and part trophy-hunting, with a heavy dose of mid-1990s nostalgia. To collect Pokémon, players walk to a location and spy

The perpetrators allegedly used digital items called lures to make the PokéStops more alluring to Pokémon — and the players who would follow them. Four suspects, all teenagers, were charged with armed robbery, as police recovered a handgun from one teen. For Wiggins, Pokémon Go meant discovering a body. “I was walking toward the bridge along the shore when I saw something in the water,” she told KTVQ. “I had to take a second look and I realized it was a body.” Authorities think the death was accidental, according to CNN. You can find Pokémon everywhere, but they do tend to be densely populated in their own “habitats” — e.g., water Pokémon near ponds, lakes, rivers, etc. Supposedly, fire Pokémon hang near gas stations.

Summer love, on and off the court BOOK REVIEW “The Devil Wears Prada” author Lauren Weisberger’s new book, “The Singles Game,” is a sparkling novel about a tennis pro who stages a big comeback with the help of her shark-like new coach. The book zooms along in the great tradition of summer reads — with occasionally wobbly subplots — but readers will be having such a grand time they won’t care. After Charlotte “Charlie” Silver wipes out at Wimbledon, things look bad for the 24-year-old. But just as she’s finishing rehab from injuries, she gets a call from Todd Feltner, a famed coach of tennis champions. Despite his horrendously rude behavior, Charlie believes that his hard-hitting tactics will help ratchet up her racket strategy. And they do. Soon Charlie starts winning, and gets wrapped up in her new

dream life — complete with a smoking-hot tennis star boyfriend and a personal stylist. But then Charlie realizes she’s lost touch with loved ones because she’s so caught up in herself. But as with previous Weisberger heroines, failure doesn’t provide the wake-up call that success does. When Charlie returns to Wimbledon, what comes next may or may not surprise you, depending on how you feel about tennis princesses. The delightful thing is that it doesn’t matter.
