Tackling what he has called a humanitarian crisis, President Barack Obama on Tuesday asked Congress for $3.7 billion to cope with a tide of minors from Central America who are illegally crossing the U.S. border, straining immigration resources and causing a political ﬁrestorm in Washington. The W hite House said the money would help increase the detention, care and transportation of unaccompanied children, help speed the removal of adults with children by increasing the capacity of immigration courts and increase prosecution of smuggling networks. Obama requested the money in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner. The request did not include proposals for legislative changes that the White House wants. Memphis Police Department spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said 404 officers have called in sick since June 30, an increase from 308 officers who had called in sick through Sunday. Robert Menendez is asking the Justice Department to pursue evidence obtained by U.S. investigators that the Cuban government concocted an elaborate plot to smear him with allegations that he cavorted with underage prostitutes, according to people familiar with the discussions. In a letter sent to Justice Department officials, the senator’s attorney asserts that the plot was timed to derail the political rise of Menendez, D-N.J., one of Washington’s most ardent critics of the Castro regime. At the time, Menendez was running for re-election and was preparing to assume the powerful chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. According to a former U.S. official with firsthand knowledge of government intelligence, the CIA had obtained credible evidence, including Internet protocol addresses, linking Cuban agents to the prostitution claims and to

They stole the workers’ ID tags and took two of them with them as hostages as they entered the factory

M St. Won’t Crumble Yet One bake shop bites the frosted dust, but it’s too soon for cupcake eulogies

We had enough cupcakes to declare frosting dead to us long before Crumbs’ demise, and the doughnut craze seems to be sprinkling out. Perhaps it’s time for the humble mufﬁn to have its moment? Until then, we look back at our past addictions and that moment when we collectively sighed, “OK, enough already!”

The lights are off at Crumbs Bake Shop on 11th Street. The glass display case is empty. There will be no more cupcakes sold there, or at any other Crumbs location. The New York-based chain rocked the pastry world Monday with news that it was closing down all 48 of its stores. America’s largest cupcake chain is now a thing of the past. But the cupcake trend, it seems, is not. Across town from the shuttered Crumbs location, local cupcake shops Georgetown Cupcake and Baked and Wired were doing brisk business Tuesday afternoon. On M Street, the traditional pilgrimage for cupcake aficionados, concerns about the dessert’s demise seem premature. “Considering the lines we have pretty regularly, it’s definitely not dead yet,” says Jamie Rosen, manager at Baked and Wired. “Not even a little bit.” Ian and Debra Mishalove, standing outside Baked and Wired with a cupcake each, backed Rosen up. They believe the cupcake, in all its miniature, frosted glory, remains the ultimate dessert choice. “They’re the perfect little package,” Ian says. The Mishaloves are, admittedly, a bit biased: The self-described cupcake enthusiasts ate cupcakes on their first date and served them at their wedding instead of a traditional cake. But even skeptics don’t think cupcakes are going anywhere soon. Reeves Hankins, who calls the entire dessert industry “overhyped,” acknowledges that the pastry has an undeniable appeal: they’re small, single serving size, and have an instagrammable aesthetic. David Sax, author of “The Tastemakers” and an expert in food trends, has a similar take. He says that Crumbs’ demise was “a classic tale of overexpansion and borrowing too much money,” rather than an indicator that the cupcake trend has gone stale. From Down Under to Caps Prospect Camp Capitals It was 2 a.m. in Australia when Capitals prospect Nathan Walker received a long-awaited phone call last month. Washington had traded up into the third round to select the forward with the 89th overall pick in his third and ﬁnal year of draft eligibility. “From there on,” Walker said, “the roof on the house pretty much blew off.” At that moment, Walker became the ﬁrst Australian ever drafted into the NHL. The same ESPN poll of past and present NFL front office personnel ranked New England’s Tom Brady as the league’s best overall passer. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, By Rick New Orleans’ Drew Snider Brees, Denver’s Peyton Manning and Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck completed the top five. It’s pretty hard to knock that list. Yet an ESPN fantasy poll rated Brady 12th overall and Grifﬁn seventh. Fans ranked Manning, Rodgers and Brees atop the list with Detroit’s Matthew Stafford and Carolina’s Cam Newton in the top ﬁve, respectively.

The polls pit personnel experts versus fan favorites, but ranking Griffin 19th among passers is absurd — even after his poor second season that ended with him being benched after 13 games. The NFL is sleeping on RGIII. Disperse all NFL quarterbacks and Griffin is probably taken eighth after Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Luck, Newton and Seattle’s Russell Wilson. But the NFL talent evaluators must not have been watching Griffin over the offseason. He has discarded his knee brace, leading to ankle-breaking moves, and improved his arm strength with his ability to plant better. Most of all, they must not remember the Griffin of 2012,

Incoming coach Jay Gruden is the antithesis of his draconian predecessor, and Griffin is feeling good. And when Griffin is feeling good, the team is feeling good. be so much tougher this fall after last year’s harsh lesson. Griffin seems more focused on the field than he did last season, when he was recovering from knee surgery and distracted by weekly power struggles with Shanahan. Throw in a better offensive line, new receivers DeSean Jackson and Andre Roberts and returning pass-catchers Pierre Garcon and Jordan Reed, and the Redskins should threaten to score 30 points on a weekly basis. Not all storylines now lead back to him, Griffin recently joked. The Redskins have more balance and a couple new personalities. Ariza is now an unrestricted free agent, and the Wizards are confident they will be able to retain him. Well Enough Alone Jack Antonoff goes solo for his catchy ’80s pop nostalgia project Bleachers Music Certain shortages are more dire than others (fossil fuels, Arctic ice and the like), but the dearth of decent band names still matters. Especially if your name is Jack Antonoff, guitarist of the Grammywinning rock band fun., who next week will release the debut album from his new solo project, Bleachers. The music is pretty good, and the name is pretty great — a romantic moniker evocative of teenage makeout spots, or high school tribes with platinum hair, or, if you squish them together, peroxide punks smooching in secret. Antonoff — brown-haired with birth-control glasses — says that Bleachers gives him the opportunity to write bloody-heart-on-sleeve rock songs. And so the 11-song album, “Strange Desire,” ﬁnds the 30-year-old time-traveling to the early 1980s, a time when the melodrama of Journey and the Psychedelic Furs may not have been all that dissimilar. It’s unabashed, nostalgic stuff, and according to Antonoff, deeply personal. But if these songs were by “Jack Antonoff,” would anyone care? To go solo in rock ’n’ roll, the name Mom and Dad gave you probably won’t cut it. Look at all of the frontmen who have dared to branch out in recent years without a nomde-rock: Julian Casablancas of the

to listen to them in the ﬁrst place? Going it alone betrays the ancient precept that rock ’n’ roll is a collective art. We love rock stars, but we respect them when they’re part of a constellation. Going solo under your own name smacks of ego-tripping, while adopting a bandesque name connotes authority and signiﬁcance. With Bleachers, Antonoff is

doing his best to reconcile new wave sleekness and the unapologetic wallop of the emo-punk he grew up on. By multitracking his vocals, it doesn’t sound like a solo turn so much as an army of Antonoffs emptying their hearts and lungs. It works well on the album’s ﬁrst single, “I Wanna Get Better,” a stuttering power ballad about growing up and freaking out. Other times, he pushes it. “Like a River Runs” sounds like it was written for a Reagan-era prom and, when the chorus kicks in, a teen-ﬂick pep rally. As a Jack Antonoff song, it might read as excessive, ostentatious, embarrassingly overblown. Because it’s a Bleachers song, you might catch yourself singing along. Madonna turned up for jury duty Monday at a Manhattan state courthouse, quickly getting dismissed. State court system spokesman David Bookstaver said officials cut her loose because they didn’t want her presence to distract from jury selection. She’s now excused from Manhattan state court jury duty for six years. (AP)

News that the pair became “inseparable” during their two-week vacation. TMZ speculated that Rodriguez was getting “a little revenge” against her ex-girlfriend, Cara Delevingne, who last month was seen kissing fellow Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss. The United Nations announced on Monday that Emma Watson will serve as a Goodwill Ambassador for the organization’s gender equality campaign HeForShe. E! News reported that a high number of visits to the U.N. website after the announcement caused the site to temporarily shut down.
