‘Road to the NBA’ Not an Actual Road, Man Finds Out A 22-year-old Pennsylvania man faces charges after police encountered him dribbling a basketball Sunday along Interstate 78 near Bethlehem. The Express-Times reported Monday that police said Marquis Johnson of Hatfield had a Pennsylvania license plate sticking out from his shorts, and that he smelled of marijuana. He was arrested and charged with abandoning a vehicle and drug possession. (AP) EXPENSIVE TASTES

Dog: ‘A Diamond Is Forever’ A Wisconsin woman who lost her diamond wedding ring five years ago had given up all hope of finding it after searching high and low. It turns out her dog may have had it all along. Lois Matykowski’s dog Tucker stole a popsicle and ate it — stick and all. The food soon came back up. Two days later, Tucker threw up again. Matykowski told WAOW-TV when she went to clean up the mess, she found her missing ring. (AP) YOU KNOW THE TYPE

Eyes on ‘Arthur’ Ahead of July 4 Holiday Savannah, Ga. With the July Fourth weekend on the horizon, the Atlantic hurricane season’s first named storm gradually gained strength off Florida’s coast Tuesday, though Arthur wasn’t yet spooking too many in the storm’s potential path. “I think everybody’s keeping one eye on the weather and one eye on the events this weekend,” said Joe Mari-

nelli, president of Visit Savannah, the Georgia city’s tourism bureau. A tropical storm watch was in effect for a swath of Florida’s east coast, and the National Hurricane Center urged those as far north as parts of Virginia to monitor Arthur’s path. The center said Arthur was becoming better organized and predicted it would become a hurricane by Thursday. On Tuesday evening, the storm swirled about 80 miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Fla., moving about 5 mph with maximum sustained winds about 40 mph. There were no official warn-

Will the Storm Affect My Plans? During the day Thursday, expect a strong tropical storm off the South Carolina coast, then a possible landfall as a minimal hurricane early Friday morning near the Outer Banks of North Carolina. From there, the storm should remain offshore. The bulk of the rain should remain offshore with the exception of the coastal areas of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and possibly eastern Virginia/Maryland/Delaware. The North Carolina Outer Banks is most vulnerable to hazards from this storm and is likely to contend with heavy rain, tropical storm-force winds and some coastal flooding Thursday night into Friday morning. In D.C., enhanced rainfall and thunderstorms are possible Thursday into Thursday night. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

First tropical storm of season expected to dampen East Coast

ings for other states, but forecasters started to warn of rain, heavy surf and swells, and potential rip tides. In North Carolina’s Outer Banks, officials said they would close Cape Lookout National Seashore at 5 p.m. today and reopen when it’s safe. The motel Shutters on the Banks is booked for the weekend, general manager John Zeller said, despite National Weather Service forecasts for potentially heavy rain, gusty winds and isolated tornadoes. “We are telling people to kind of wait and see what happens,” he said. “I think everybody is kind of watching the weather.” RUSS BYNUM (AP)

Can Ex-CEO Turn the VA Around? Robert McDonald — the former CEO of Procter & Gamble — is President Barack Obama’s choice to run the Department of Veterans Affairs. If confirmed, he will take over a VA that is working through one of the biggest scandals in its history. GREG JAFFE AND STE VEN MUFSON (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Mennonite girls gather at a health and safety clinic last month in Shiloh, Ohio.

Visiting Amish Country? Beware of the Measles. Shiloh, Ohio Visitors from around the world to two upcoming events in Ohio’s Amish country could come away with more than they bargained for, health officials fear — a case of measles from the nation’s largest outbreak in two decades. The outbreak, with more than 360 cases, started after Amish travelers to the Philippines contracted measles this year and returned home to rural Knox County, where it spread thanks to a lower rate of vaccination among the Amish and the difficulty public-health author-

ities had in getting the word out to rural communities where phones are few and the Internet is nonexistent. Health officials believe the outbreak is slowing in Ohio thanks to vaccination clinics and door-to-door visits by public-health nurses. But Horse Progress Days, a showcase of horse-drawn equipment scheduled for Friday and Saturday, is expected to draw more than 20,000 Amish and others from around the globe. And a large annual auction that raises money to help Amish families pay medical bills for children with birth defects is scheduled for Saturday. ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS (AP)

Most VA secretaries have been known quantities in Washington — their ranks heavy with former generals and politicians. But many lawmakers admit they don’t know much about McDonald, 61. He graduated from West Point, did a five-year stint as an Army paratrooper and spent the next 33 years as an executive at Procter & Gamble in Asia, Europe and the U.S. He resigned amid criticism from investors and former executives that he wasn’t moving fast enough.

How’s he being received? So far, McDonald has received praise from lawmakers, who said the former CEO’s focus on consumers at Procter & Gamble could help transform an agency that has often seemed indifferent to the needs of the veterans it is supposed to be serving. “His management skills … make him a good fit to run the department, which has been plagued by mismanagement for years,” said Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla.

Who is Robert McDonald?

“Let me state the obvious. This is not going to be an easy assignment.” — President Barack Obama, on Monday introducing Robert McDonald as his choice to run the Department of Veterans Affairs. The two are pictured above during the announcement.

What are the unknowns? The question facing McDonald and the Obama administration is how well those decades of experience selling Tide, Pantene and Pampers translates into helping vets. Another test will be whether McDonald’s management style can penetrate a bureaucracy that has made it hard for top officials to know what’s going on in the field. Full story: washingtonpost.com

Painful Mistake: The Veterans Affairs Department is apologizing to a Massachusetts woman for offering an appointment to her husband two years after he died. Suzanne Chase said her Vietnam veteran husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2011. In 2012, she tried to move his care to a VA hospital. She never heard back, and he died in August 2012. Two weeks ago, the VA wrote to set up an appointment. (AP)

NYC to Acrobats: Sit Down Police cracking down on subway showmen who flip out on trains New York The underground acrobats who flip, somersault and pole-dance among New York City subway riders are drawing a new audience — police officers. The New York Police Department is cracking down on the subway showmen who use the tight quarters of the nation’s busiest transit system as moving stages for impromptu — and illegal — pass-the-hat performances. More than 240 people have been arrested on misdemeanors related to acrobatics so far this year, compared with fewer than 40 at this time a year ago. Police Commissioner William

Bratton acknowledges he is targeting subway acrobats as part of his embrace of the “broken windows” theory of policing — that low-grade lawlessness can cultivate a greater sense of disorder and embolden more dangerous offenders. The subway acrobats say they’re just out to entertain, make a living

and put a little levity in New York’s no-eye-contact commuting. Police insist that the showmanship is a safety issue. “If the dancers make a mistake, someone could get hurt,” said Chief Joseph Fox, head of t he N Y PD’s Tra nsit Bureau. JENNIFER PELTZ AND TOM HAYS (AP)

Running With It Ex-Florida Gators and NFL star Aaron Hernandez, accused of killing three men, is Mr. July in the University of Florida’s 2014 sports calendar. The school said Tuesday that officials approved the publication months before he was charged. ‘Superhuman Strength’ Cited in Motorist Rescue A Good Samaritan showed “superhuman strength” when he bent the door of a burning sport utility vehicle and rescued another motorist on a Minnesota freeway, a state trooper said. Bob Renning, 52, was driving Sunday evening in New Brighton when he noticed the vehicle behind him was on fire. The car door wouldn’t budge, so Renning gripped the top of the frame with his fingertips, braced his foot against the door and pulled. The door then bent in half, the Minnesota State Patrol said. Court: France Ban of Full-Face Veils Is Legal The European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday upheld France’s law banning face-covering Muslim veils from the streets, in a case brought by a woman who claimed her freedom of religion was violated. U.S. Ship Arrives in Italy To Handle Syria Weapons The U.S. ship MV Cape Ray sailed into the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro on Tuesday to handle the transfer and destruction of about 1,300 tons of Syrian chemical weapons. Ukraine Fighting Resumes After Cease-Fire Ends Donetsk, Ukraine Panicked residents looked for a safe place to hide Tuesday as Ukrainian troops and pro-Russia separatists fought an hourslong gunbattle in the center of Donetsk, the largest city in eastern Ukraine. Rebels captured the Interior Ministry headquarters there a day after the president said they weren’t serious about peace and ended a cease-fire. The often-broken cease-fire had given European leaders 10 days to search in vain for a peace deal, and its end raised the prospect of an escalation in a conflict that has already killed more than 400 people. Ukrainian forces have been unable to suppress the rebels in two months of fighting — and it was not clear now what they would be doing differently to change that situation. (AP)

Radical leader wants to bring Muslims from all over to Iraq Baghdad The leader of the extremist group that seized much of northern Iraq and Syria called on Muslims worldwide on Tuesday to join the battle and help build an Islamic state in the newly conquered territory. The 19-minute audiotape from Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi came two days after his organization, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, unilaterally declared the establishment of an Islamic state, or caliphate, in the land it controls. The Iraqiborn al-Baghdadi has made a bid to eclipse even al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahri as the jihadi movement’s most influential figure. He said the Islamic state is a

Iraq’s inaugural session of parliament ended Tuesday without agreement on the formation of a new government, dampening hopes that the country’s fractious politicians would rise to the challenge presented by an insurgency that is tearing their nation apart. Iraq is increasingly turning to other governments like Iran, Russia and Syria to help beat back a rampant insurgency because it cannot wait for additional American military aid, Baghdad’s top envoy to the U.S. said Tuesday. In a sign of the seriousness of the violence convulsing the country, the United Nations announced that 2,417 Iraqis were killed and 2,287 were injured in June, one of the highest monthly tolls since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. Mourning, Retaliation for Slain Israeli Teens Jerusalem Tens of thousands of mourners converged Tuesday in central Israel for a funeral service for three teenagers found dead in the West Bank after a two-week search and crackdown on the Hamas militant group, which Israeli leaders have accused of abducting and killing the young men. The deaths of Eyal Yifrah, 19, Gilad Shaar, 16, and Naftali Fraenkel, a 16-year-old with dual IsraeliAmerican citizenship, have prompted angry calls for revenge. The three young men were buried side by side in the central Israeli town of Modiin. Mourners arrived in large convoys of buses arranged

for the ceremony. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his security Cabinet for an emergency meeting to discuss a response to the

killings, hours after airstrikes targeted dozens of suspected Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip. Ahead of the late-night meeting, Netanyahu vowed a tough response

against Hamas, saying Israel “will not rest” until it catches the killers. He also warned of stepped up military activity in Hamas-controlled Gaza if rocket fire out of the territory continues. Overnight Tuesday, the Israeli air force carried out airstrikes on 34 targets, including a Hamas compound, the military said. Palestinian officials said four people were wounded. Israeli troops also shot dead a Palestinian man in the West Bank, where the teens disappeared on June 12. Israel has accused the Hamas militant group of carrying out the abduction, and Netanyahu has warned “Hamas will pay.” IAN DEITCH (AP)

The Corleones Are Not Pleased: A southern Italian archbishop has proposed a 10-year moratorium on the naming of godfathers in a bid to stem the way mob bosses use the “padrino” system to spread their influence and authority to the next generation. Godparents are named when a baby is baptized and they promise to help raise the child in the Catholic faith. Monsignor Giuseppe Fiorini Morosini has argued that, in his region of Calabria at least, godparents are less theological role models than “points of reference” and mob friends. (AP)

Getaway Tips for July 4 Be on the lookout for these trouble spots in weekend traffic Washington Highway traffic away from the D.C. area should be heavier than normal between about 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday. Transportation departments suspend their regular work around holidays, but that still leaves bottlenecks in long-term construction zones, at toll plazas and at points where highways narrow. These are some to watch for during your long-distance trips this weekend.

I-95 in Delaware: The I-495 bypass in Wilmington is unavailable because of a bridge closing. This could be a problem for holiday trafďŹ c on Thursday and Sunday afternoons. I-95 in Baltimore: A rebuilding project between the Fort McHenry Tunnel and Caton Avenue reduces lanes and splits traffic in both directions. There are also speed cameras in this area. I-95/395 in Northern Virginia: The Virginia Department of Transportation will suspend lane closings on most highways from noon Thursday to noon Monday. But drivers on I-395/95 still are likely to

encounter delays because of the high volumes of traff ic along the 29-mile work zone for the 95 Express Lanes.

Virginia HOV lanes: HOV restrictions on Interstate 66, I-95 and I-395 are as usual on Thursday. They will be lifted on Friday. Chesapeake Bay Bridge: The Maryland Transportation Authority says the best times to cross the bridge should be: Thursday before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m., Friday before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m., Saturday before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m., Sunday before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m. ROBERT THOMSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

D.C. Is Brimming With STEM Jobs JIM WATSON (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

In Brief

Schoolchildren help Michelle Obama plant the sixth annual garden in April. WASHINGTON

Tours of the First Lady’s Garden Set to Resume The White House says tours of Michelle Obama’s garden are scheduled to resume the week of July 14. They were halted after mandatory budget cuts went into effect last year. Public tours of the White House also were halted but resumed after the president signed legislation funding government operations. The garden tours are open to community and school groups that are interested in gardening and healthy eating. (AP)

INSTITUTION AND THE AUTHOR OF A STUDY ON JOBS IN STEM FIELDS

— JON AT H A N ROT H W ELL , A SENIOR RESEARCH ASSOCIATE AT THE BROOKINGS

With its reputation as a government town, many people outside the Washington region may not think of this area as a hub for STEM jobs — positions requiring science, technology, engineering and math skills. But a new study released Tuesday by the Brookings Institution finds a comparatively large and competitive market here for those kinds of jobs. The study used data from Burn-

ing Glass, a company that analyzes online job postings, to examine 4.7 million online job ads, crunching what kinds of skills the positions required and how long the advertisements stayed online. (Presumably, if an ad stays up for a long time, it is difficult to fill. If it comes down quickly, it is likely easier to fill.) Researchers then compared the results for the 100 largest

Md. Court Limits State Sex-Offender Registry

MELINA MARA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

One-fourth of the names on Maryland’s sex-offender registry may be removed after the state’s top court on Monday expanded upon a ruling that adding offenders from before the list was created violated the state’s Constitution. The Court of Appeals declared last year that the state could not require the registration of people who committed their crimes before October 1995, when the database was established. (AP) WASHINGTON

Prosecutors have dismissed a misdemeanor charge against a man who drove behind a motorcade carrying President Barack Obama’s daughters through the White House gates. metropolitan areas in the nation. The Washington area stood out on several measures. More than 55 percent of the job postings here in the first quarter of 2013 required STEM skills. Of the 100 metropolitan areas, only two had a larger share of STEM postings during the same time period. And the region ranks second in the country for the share of its

STEM jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree: 48.8 percent. The D.C. region wasn’t only highly ranked when it came to STEM jobs: It had the second largest number of job postings overall. With 47,004 postings here in the first quarter of 2013, only New York, a much more populous area, had more overall postings. “Because of that extraordinary demand for skilled and educated workers, there’s hiring difficulty — despite the fact that the D.C. metro area also happens to be one of the most educated areas in the country,” said Jonathan Rothwell, the study’s author.

Virginia state Del. Joseph Morrissey says there’s no chance he’ll resign after being indicted on charges he had an improper sexual relationship with a teenager. Morrissey, 56, said Tuesday outside the Henrico County Circuit Courthouse that he was innocent of any wrongdoing. Morrissey Morrissey faces charges of supervisory indecent liberties and possession and distribution of child pornography related to what a special prosecutor alleged was multiple sexual encounters with a 17-year-old girl. Morrissey, a former prosecutor and a criminal defense attorney with a history of public controversies including a courtroom

fistfight and a revocation of his law license that lasted a decade, had been under criminal investigation since August, when police found the girl in his home about midnight on a Friday. Police were tipped off by the girl’s father, according to court documents released Monday. Del. Mark Keam said even though Morrissey, a fellow Democrat, is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, the charges are serious enough that he should step down and deal with his legal problems as a private citizen. “Whether these charges ultimately prove to be true or not, one thing is absolutely clear — no person accused of such horrendous acts should hold a position of public trust,” Keam said in a statement posted on Facebook early Tuesday. It is the latest in a string of controversies to draw legal and ethical scrutiny to elected officials in Virginia. (AP/ THE WASHINGTON POST )

The high end of what the temperature may feel like today in the D.C. region. The actual high will reach into the mid-90s, but it may feel as hot as 100-105. Storms in the afternoon and evening hours could produce very heavy rain, strong — possibly damaging — winds and hail. (CAPITAL WEATHER GANG)

Keeper has 16 saves but U.S. eliminated with loss to Belgium World Cup They captured the eyes and hearts of a suddenly awakened soccer nation, who gathered in unprecedented numbers to watch the world’s game. But the end of the ride came at the exact same point as four years ago: with an overtime loss in the World Cup’s Round of 16. Kevin De Bruyne finally beat goa l keeper Ti m Howard in the third minute of extra time, Romelu Luk a k u scored 12 minutes later to give Belgium a two-goal lead, and the Red Devils hung on for a 2-1 victory Tuesday. “It’s heartbreaking,” Howard said. “I don’t think we could have given it more.” Before exiting, the U.S. showed the spunk that captured America’s attention. Julian Green, at 19 the youngest player on the U.S. roster, stuck out his right foot to volley in

U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard had 16 saves but was scored on twice in extra time.

Michael Bradley’s pass over the defense in the 107th minute, two minutes after entering the game. They nearly tied it up in the 114th, when Clint Dempsey peeled off the ball and was stopped point-blank by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after

being fed by Bradley on a free kick. But it wasn’t enough, and U.S. players fell to the field at the final whistle in their all-white uniforms like so many crumpled tissues. “You get to this point and these games are always about a play here

and play there,” Bradley said. The Americans advanced from a difficult first-round group that included Germany, Portugal and Ghana to reach the knockout rounds of consecutive World Cups for the first time. Four years ago, they were eliminated in South Africa by Ghana 1-0 on a goal in the third minute of overtime. The crowd of 51,227 at Arena Fonte Nova appeared to be about one third pro-U.S., with 10 percent backing the Belgians and the rest neutral. Back home, millions watched across the United States in offices, homes and public gatherings, including D.C.’s Freedom Plaza. Howard, playing the finest game of his career, stopped a dozen shots with his legs and arms to keep the Americans even through regulation and force an additional 30 minutes. He wound up with 16 saves. Chris Wondolowski had a chance to win it in stoppage time when Jermaine Jones flicked the ball to him at the top of the 6-yard box, but with Courtois coming out Wondolowski put the ball over the crossbar. “The dream falls short, but this is an incredible group,” Howard said, “and we’ll never forget this night.” RONALD BLUM (AP)

Three Keys to the Match The late flurry wasn’t enough. Down 2-0 in extra time, the U.S. fought like a wounded animal to stay alive in the World Cup before going out in heartbreaking fashion to Belgium. Here are some talking points. MICHAEL CUNNIFF (E XPRESS) “Without the ball, you can’t win.” This simple, yet profound, observation by the legendary Dutch player and manager Johan Cruyff forms the basis of how great teams play soccer. It would have been nice for Cruyff to repeat it to Coach Jurgen Klinsmann and Co. Tuesday night. The Americans were too content to let Belgium have the ball, and they gave it away cheaply when they did get it back. Instead of taking the game to Belgium, the U.S. tried to ride out the red tide. Much of the credit goes to Belgium for keeping the U.S. under pressure. But in order for the team to make the leap to the top tier of world soccer, the U.S. has to be as good with the ball as it is tenacious without it.

1

Tim Howard, U.S. Goalkeeper What more can you say about him? Howard capped off a flawless World Cup with a performance for the ages. Commanding his box imperiously, he was a wall for 92 minutes, fending off wave after wave of attacks until his resistance was finally broken by Kevin De Bruyne. If Howard, 35, never plays in another World Cup, he’ll have gone out with a bang. (M.C.)

Lukaku the super sub. Romelu Lukaku burst onto the scene in the Premier League in 2012-13. Playing at West Bromwich Albion on loan from Chelsea, Lukaku scored 17 goals in 35 games — including 15 appearances off the bench, where he used his strength and speed to overpower tired defendLukaku ers. He did exactly that against the U.S., shrugging off Matt Besler like he wasn’t there in the buildup to the first goal, and hitting the Americans with a suckerpunch on the counter for the second.

2

The future is bright. Did you miss Julian Green’s consolation goal? Didn’t see the way he timed his run to perfection to get on the end of a vintage Michael Bradley chip? Don’t worry, you’ll likely get plenty of chances to see that in the next four years. Bradley (26 years old), Green (19 ), fullback DeAndre Yedlin (20) and American hero John Brooks (21) are among the dozen or so players on the 2014 World Cup roster who will expect to play a big role in qualifying for the next cycle. Many were surprised when Green and Yedlin were picked for the roster, while over-30 veterans Landon Donovan and Clarence Goodson were left out, but Klinsmann’s faith in youth will pay dividends in the long run.

Howard Can’t Stop ’Em All Lionel Messi celebrates with Angel di Maria after the game-winning goal.

Argentina Scores in Extra Time World Cup Angel Di Maria scored deep into extra time Tuesday to give Argentina a 1-0 win over Switzerland and a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals. With a penalty shootout looming, Lionel Messi made a surging run toward the Swiss area in the 118th minute and laid the ball off to Di Maria on the right. The winger struck a left-foot shot past diving goalkeeper Diego Benaglio, prompting the Argentine bench to jump out on the field to celebrate the goal. Sw iss subst itute Blerim Dzemaili nearly equalized right before the end but his header hit the post, and the rebound bounced off his knee and wide of the goal. The result at Sao Paulo’s Itaquerao Stadium continued Argentina’s record of scraping by with narrow wins at this World Cup. Di Maria said the Argentines knew from the start that there was a good chance that the game would go into extra time, like three of the six previous second-round matches. “We know that this could happen to us, but we gave our souls out there on the pitch, we fought with our lives for each ball and we ended up as the winners,” Di Maria said. Nadal, Sharapova Fall in Round of 16 19-year-old Kyrgios advances to quarters in Wimbledon debut Wimbledon For the third year in a row, Rafael Nadal is making an early exit from Wimbledon after a stunning loss to a player ranked 100th or worse. Nick Kyrgios, a 19-year-old wild card from Australia with a world ranking of 144, served 37 aces and used a fearless go-for-broke style to beat the No. 1-ranked Nadal 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 and reach the quarterfinals. Playing in his first Wimbledon and second major, Kyrgios is the first player outside the top 100 to defeat a No. 1 at a Grand Slam since No. 193 Andrei Olhovskiy downed Jim Courier in the third round at Wimbledon in 1992. Kyrgios is the first man to get to the quarterfinals in his Wimbledon debut in 10 years.

Meanwhile … Serena Williams was diagnosed with what the tournament said was a viral illness and pulled out of her Wimbledon doubles match with sister Venus after only three games Tuesday. Serena, who lost in the third round of singles Saturday, looked out of sorts from the moment the pre-match warmup began. It was an odd scene, as the 32-yearold had trouble collecting tennis balls from the ball kids and whiffed on some practice strokes. (AP)

On the women’s side, former champion Maria Sharapova saved six match points before falling to ninth-seeded Angelique Kerber 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 in the fourth round, ending her bid to win a second title at the All England Club a decade after her first. (AP)

RFK Deserves One More Game If “gladiators” are returning to Candlestick Park for a last hurrah, can Washington Redskins greats play once more at RFK Stadium? After all, it looks like the old Roman Colosseum. The Legends of Candlestick Park on July 12 will pit former San Francisco 49ers stars against retired NFL standouts in a By Rick flag football game Snider before the team moves to its new stadium this fall. Joe Montana and Jerry Rice’s “gladiators” face Dan Marino and James Lofton for charity.

Why couldn’t a legends game come to RFK Stadium? The Redskins and Cowboys greats of the 1970s and ’80s could face off once more before a crowd of 50,000. Scalpers would return for that one, too. The Cowboys won a similar 1989 charity game at Texas Stadium. It’s time for a rematch. Maybe Sonny Jurgensen and the Over The Hill Gang’s days are done, though surely Pat Fischer is up for one more frothy-mouth

hit and Chris Hanburger would clothesline someone. Ron McDole could be the “Dancing Bear” at halftime. Joe Theismann, Doug Williams and Mark Rypien could show off their Super Bowlwinning arms to Art Monk, Ricky Sanders and Gary Clark. Let Chris Cooley play, too. Watch Dexter Manley ring Danny White’s bell while Charles Mann and Darrell Green make plays. And certainly Mark Moseley can still kick a 50-yarder for coach Joe Gibbs. “The players would do it if it was put together right,” said Moseley, now president of the Redskins Alumni Association.

1921 8th St NW Washington DC 20001

“We did a Redskins-Cowboys golf tournament a few years ago. It was huge. We raised $60,000. If you did something in Washington it would be big. We’d get a lot of guys who would come to it and play it.” Redskins fans would fill RFK. All the team’s great modern memories remain in that stadium. Meanwhile, Landover has been nothing but a field of nightmares. James Earl Jones predicted in “Field of Dreams,” “People will come, Ray. … They’ll pass over the money without even thinking about it. It’s money they have and peace they lack. … The memories will be so thick they’ll

have to brush them away from their faces.” If the Redskins are considering building a new stadium at the RFK site in the next decade, a charity game is a good start toward gaining the neighborhood and political support the plan lacks. The team and the city need to promote the game, but not profit from it. Make it truly a charity event that raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for needy Washingtonians and everyone wins. Give Redskins fans the chance to bounce once more in the stands. After all, nothing beats the good old days and going home. Rick Snider has covered Washington sports since 1978. Inside Jokes

Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone pair up professionally with their comedy ‘Tammy’

The Show Goes On Because television is no longer confined to … television, NBC’s lowrated, recently canceled comedy “Community” will get to fulfill the first part of its #sixseasonsandamovie promise in the place where it actually thrived: the Internet. Yahoo, a Web portal best distinguished by having a name you should yodel, ordered a 13-episode sixth season that most fans — myself included — had assumed was as By Rudi dead as Chevy Chase’s Greenberg Pierce Hawthorne. Yahoo Screen’s surprise pickup not only fits with the series’ absurd humor (and behind-thescenes drama), but makes sense for all parties involved. Once-fired, then-rehired creator Dan Harmon gets to keep making his show; fans who turned “Community” into an endless stream of GIFs and Internet comments get to keep watching — no TV set required; and Yahoo gains a foothold in the streaming-content arms race against Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Instant Video. Behind all the meta-humor, “Community” is about a group of misfits becoming a family in an unlikely place. It’s a sentiment that makes this move all the more fitting. For more of Rudi’s comedy musings, follow him on Twitter: @rudigreenberg.

Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy have been paired in love and comedy since they were aspiring performers at the Groundlings, the Los Angeles improv school. Their long partnership reaches a crescendo today with the release of “Tammy,” a comedy they wrote together that McCarthy stars in and Falcone directs. McCarthy and Falcone, who married in 2005, are incredibly sweet together, but their on-screen relationship is far more combustible. In “Tammy,” she hurls put-downs and ketchup packets at him after

BF: It was in [a Groundlings] class. … Her character kept going to the same Kinko’s and talking to a guy name Todd. She said the name about forty hundred billion times, like, “Hey Todd. Watch Your Seat: A bench on which the teenage lovers of “The Fault in Our Stars,” played by Shailene Woodley, left, and Ansel Elgort, talk and kiss is missing. The green bench resembles hundreds of others around the city, and its absence went unnoticed for at least a month. Suspects in the disappearance include the city itself, which may have taken the bench away for repairs, as well as vandals or even fans wanting to own a small piece of film history. (AP)

‘Begin Again’ doesn’t have the same sweet rhythm as ‘Once’

Stephen Schaefer, BOSTON HERALD

“Begin Again” stars Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley in a can’tmiss setup to make a romancestarved moviegoer salivate. Which makes it all the more painful when it does miss. Written and directed by Irish filmmaker John Carney, who charmed the knickers off audiences with the winsome 2007 musical “Once,” this follow-up has a bigger budget, better clothes and — here’s the bad news — worse music. Ruffalo plays Dan, a record label executive who hasn’t broken an act in seven years. He’s in the final throes of a potentially suicidal alcoholic bender when he hears the dulcet tones of Gretta (Knightley), a doe-eyed Brit strumming her guitar in a downtown New York dive. As Dan and Gretta strike up a business relationship and then a friendship, it

There are times that “Begin Again” comes to palpable life and that make it pleasant and refreshingly open-hearted, even as it heads toward a predictable, only-in-themovies climax. It may not always swing, but it makes up for that in sincerity and a welcome willingness to ambush expectations.

“Snowpiercer,” a futuristic action thriller directed by of-the-moment filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, takes place amid a new Ice Age and on an ark-like train that carries survivors on an endless loop. Curtis (Chris Evans) plots a revolution against the 1 percent that lives it up in first class while the poor huddle in the tail section. Tilda Swinton’s turn as the train’s merciless ruler is among the most colorful in “Snowpiercer,” but it’s lost in a tonal mishmash of political metaphor, lightheartedness and pulverizing violence. Subtlety may not be the film’s strong suit, but it creates a richly imagined world, as glitteringly arresting as it is savagely merciless. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

Reese Hartwig, above, pals around with a friendly alien in “Earth to Echo.” will draw comparisons to “E.T.,” but Dave Green’s debut feature “Earth to Echo” also includes the friendship adventure of “The Goonies” combined with the sci-fi thrill of “Super 8.” Three boys explore a nearby desert, where they find a small metallic alien with little more than huge, glowing blue eyes. From there, the boys set off on an all-night adventure across Nevada to search for “Echo’s” spaceship. The refresh-

At the start of “America: Imagine the World Without Her, ” Gen. George Washington is killed by a British sniper. He’s one of the few targets that takes a direct hit in conservative pundit Dinesh D’Souza’s scattershot movie. The writer, who narrates, lists some of the claims of the American political left against the United States — that it’s racist, expansionist, imperialist, colonialist and so on — and then sort of refutes them. D’Souza controls the conversation, and thus goes unchallenged when he tries to make real-world points with make-believe scenarios. MARK JENKINS (TWP)
