A 10-year-old mutt named Quasi Modo, whose spinal birth defects left her hunchbacked, is the winner of this year’s World’s Ugliest Dog contest. The pit bull-Dutch shepherd mix and her owner took the $1,500 prize Friday night, besting 25 other dogs competing in the contest that applauds imperfection. Emergency officials received a flood of 911 calls after the bear was spotted around 2 a.m. The bear “lumbered close to the party and scared the living daylights out of people,” police Chief Mark DiLuzio said. The animal was captured, tranquilized and removed from the area. (AP)

A more modern makeover THE DISTRICT The White House’s State Dining Room, a grand and historic space that has hosted kings and queens, Nobel Prize-winners, military families and George Clooney, is not a room whose redecoration is taken lightly. Yet it gets a lot of wear and tear, with all those Manolo heels digging into the rug and martinis accidentally spilling onto the curtains. After three years of work by Michelle Obama and the Committee for the Preservation of the White House, a new look was unveiled there Friday that will be a design legacy of the Obama years. The major new statement is at the windows: elegant, sumptuously swagged striped draperies in bold peacock blue and ecru, suspended from thick carved, gilded poles. These colors should go very nicely, by the way, with the new Obama state china service in Kailua blue, unveiled in April. The design of the 34 new stately mahogany chairs is based on chairs bought for the East

All in all, it looks like a room rocking a new party dress. “The room looks wonderful, a little simpler and a little fresher,” says Michael S. Smith, the Obamas’ Los Angeles-based interior designer and a member of the Committee for the Preservation of the White House, who worked on the project. The cost of the project — $590,000 — was covered by the White House Historical Association’s White House Endowment Trust, a fund administered for the maintenance and refurbishment of the White House public rooms. The last time the State Dining Room was redecorated was in 1998, during the Clinton administration. In that redo, the curtains were ivory silk brocade with a design of flowers, baskets and ribbons, and the carpet had a motif of leaves and flowers. “Everything is streamlined, and there is a lot of historical gravitas here. Redoing a room like this we feel a very big sense of responsibility and the weight of history,” Smith says. JURA KONCIUS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

How an FBI agent who arrested drug addicts in D.C. became one himself THE DISTRICT Matthew Lowry was out of pills, and getting desperate. The doctor who prescribed pain medication to ease his chronic inflammation of the intestines was gone. He went to clinics, but his wife began questioning the bills. He was shaking, sweating, tired. It had been four years since Lowry graduated with honors from the FBI academy, and he had just been assigned to an elite drug task force chasing the biggest narcotics dealers along the border shared by Maryland and D.C. He was also addicted to his pain medication and going through withdrawal that felt “like the worse flu you ever had.” His wife, pregnant with their first child, suspected something was amiss. He needed to find a new way to get through the day. As he drove home from work one August evening in 2013, Lowry remembered a man he had interrogated months earlier.

He too had a family, a profession and an addiction to pain pills. He told Lowry that snorting heroin was “just like taking a pain pill.” The agent pulled over near the U Street corridor. Protected by the tinted glass of his unmarked FBI sedan, he pulled out a bag marked “FBI evidence.” Lowry broke the red evidence seal and used his finger to remove roughly a quarter gram of heroin, and made a line on the hard cover of an FBI notebook. He rolled a piece of paper into a straw and snorted. “Within 15 minutes, I was fine,” Lowry said. “It gave me energy. It made me feel euphoric, like I had confidence. You feel like you can take on anything.” Lowry took heroin nearly every day for the next year, usually while in his car, usually after work. The soothing high he felt that first day quickly vanished, but the need never lessened. He was taking it, Lowry told
NIKKI KAHN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘Like taking a pain pill’ himself, “to feel normal again.” Lowry was using drugs when D.C.’s top prosecutor hailed his work helping dismantle a coast-tocoast drug organization importing cocaine and heroin into the city. He was using drugs while living with his father, a cop with 40 years experience. While his son, Luke, was born in February 2014. For over a year, Lowry, who is now 33, managed to steal heroin from his FBI office without anyone suspecting, taking advantage of lax rules for handling and tracking evidence. He got caught only when he self-destructed, and was found Sept. 29 incoherent on an empty construction lot at the Navy Yard in Southeast Washington. Lowry’s misconduct forced prosecutors to dismiss cases against 28 drug defendants putting each and every one back on the streets. Now, it is Lowry who could go to prison. He will be sentenced July 9, after having pleaded guilty in March to 64 criminal charges. The FBI fired him. “The hardest part is the unknown,” said Lowry, who spoke

about his addiction and crimes to The Washington Post. “Where am I going to be a couple months from now?” the onetime agent said, holding Luke, now 16 months old. “How is my wife going to raise my son? How is she going to take care of the house?” Matthew Lowry’s addiction to heroin began the way many do — with pain medication. He had struggled with colitis since 2007, and eventually found a doctor who helped him manage the gastro-intestinal disease that causes frequent and bloody diarrhea, and sharp abdominal pain.
Lowry was soon hooked on medication that eased his pain but didn’t attack his disease. When he could no longer get the prescription meds, Lowry turned to heroin. His father, William Lowry, knew his son struggled with his disease, and with the medication he took to tame it. But he did not see signs of addiction. As a police officer, William Lowry had listened to the parents of countless addicts claim they didn’t know. Now he was one of them. “Now I’m looking at it through the eyes of a father,” he said. “You don’t want to see what you don’t want to see.” Matthew Lowry didn’t tell his father he was addicted to heroin even after colleagues found him that September night. “How do you tell someone you’ve idolized your entire life that you’re a heroin addict?” said the younger Lowry. Both Lowrys said the ordeal has given them a new perspective on heroin. “When I was in narcotics, I had very little compassion for people who were drug abusers,” William Lowry said. “As a cop, I never understood how you could take the things that were important to you, your family, your job, your integrity, your career, your life, and push all that to the side.” On July 9, William Lowry plans to stand up in federal court and plead for leniency for his son. He will read letters from his friends. His lawyer will emphasize the drugs weren’t taken for profit, but to feed a disease. The prosecutor might point to more than two dozen drug dealers who walked out of prison because of one agent’s drug habit, upending the hard work of his colleagues. “I worked so hard, and now it’s gone,” Lowry said. “This is all I wanted to do, and I lost it all because of an addiction.” PETER HERMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

BALTIMORE When six Baltimore police officers go to trial over the death of Freddie Gray, prosecutors will focus not on what the officers did, but on what they failed to do. Unlike most criminal cases involving homicides — where someone is charged with shooting, hitting, stabbing or choking a victim — the one headed for trial in Baltimore in October involves an unusual and complicated concept: homicide “through acts of omission,” to quote the medical examiner in Maryland who performed Gray’s autopsy, according to a report obtained by the Baltimore Sun last week. The medical examiner concluded that Gray, without a seat belt and handcuffed in the back of a police van, lurched when the van sped up or turned, striking his head and suffering a fatal neck injury. When Gray, 25,
repeatedly asked for help, authorities said, he was ignored. The autopsy report will be key to both sides in a closely watched case that is being scrutinized by legal experts and residents. Legal experts said the challenge for prosecutors will be convincing a jury that each officer bears some responsibility in the death. The officer who drove the van is charged with depravedheart murder, and three others face charges of involuntary manslaughter. Two others are accused of lesser crimes. “Homicide by omission is a difficult legal theory in the criminal law,” said Jose F. Anderson, a professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law. “You have to show criminal responsibility by inaction.” He added: “The real questions are going to be how can they pinpoint when the traumatic injury occurred or when [Gray] might have called out for help and for how long those cries were ignored.” PETER HERMANN AND LYNH BUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

People wait to use ATMs to withdraw cash Sunday at a bank in Athens, Greece. On Sunday, the European Central Bank decided not to increase an emergency loan program that has been critical to Greece’s financial institutions.
In Greece, panic grows amid deadline ATHENS, GREECE Greece’s five-year financial crisis took its most dramatic turn to date Sunday, with the prime minister announcing Greek banks would remain shut indefinitely and restrictions would be imposed on cash withdrawals, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said during a televised address to the nation. The Athens Stock Exchange will also remain closed. T he developments have thrown into question Greece’s financial future and continued membership in the 19-nation shared euro currency — and
even the European Union. President Barack Obama on Sunday urged German Chancellor Angela Merkel to find a way to keep Greece within the currency zone. Greeks have been rushing to ATMs to withdraw money across the country following Tsipras’ decision to call a referendum on creditor proposals in return for vital bailout funds. The government is urging Greeks to vote against the proposals, arguing they would prolong the country’s financial woes. The referendum, which was ratified by parliament, angered Greece’s European partners. The negotiations with European creditors have been suspended, with both sides accusing each other of being responsible.
Earlier Sunday, the European Central Bank decided not to enlarge an emergency loan program that has been a vital lifeline in recent weeks to Greece’s overextended financial institutions. The referendum is set for next Sunday. But Greece’s current bailout expires on Tuesday, and the $8 billion remaining in it will no longer be available to Greece after that date. Without those funds, Greece is unlikely to pay a $1.79 billion International Monetary Fund debt repayment due the same day. Tsipras said he has asked E.U. leaders to assist Greece past the deadline, calling the threat to cut it off “blackmail.” ELENA BECATOROS,

2nd escaped inmate shot, captured MALONE, N.Y. The second of two convicted murderers who staged a brazen escape from an upstate New York maximum-security prison three weeks ago was shot and captured Sunday, two days after his fellow inmate was killed in a confrontation with law enforcement officers, a sheriff said. A state trooper shot an unarmed David Sweat twice in the torso in Constable,N.Y., about 2 miles south of the Canadian border and 30 miles from the prison, after spotting a suspicious person walking down a road Sunday

POLITICS Fresh off their biggest legal victory, gay rights supporters began to expand their efforts beyond same-sex marriage, launching a broad push to rewrite civil rights law and extend protections to personal and financial actions, like getting a job or a mortgage. A new legislative bid would outlaw discrimination against homosexuals in employment, housing, financial dealings and other regular actions that are not protected under the Supreme Court ruling that declared samesex marriage a constitutional right. “You can be married on Saturday, post your pictures on Instagram on Sunday and fired from your job on Monday,” said Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., one of six openly gay House members and the lead sponsor of the legislation. After Friday’s Supreme Court ruling, Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., the sponsor of the legislation in that chamber, emailed supporters reminding them that, despite the marriage decision, it is still legal in some states to “kick someone out of a diner or other public accommodation because of who they love.” Although Cicilline and Merkley plan to formally introduce the legislation next month, they acknowledged that it will be tough in the near term to win approval of an expansive gay rights agenda. Republican leaders in Congress, while trying to avoid inflammatory statements about the decision, have shown no appetite for a debate that would open up gay rights beyond what the federal courts have established. Despite the hurdles, supporters of gay rights expressed longterm optimism, particularly after the ruling written by Justice

Making history THE DECISION: Same-sex couples won the right to marry nationwide on Friday as a divided Supreme Court handed a crowning victory to the gay rights movement, setting off a jubilant cascade of long-delayed weddings in states where they had been forbidden. The vote was narrow — 5-4 — but Justice Anthony Kennedy’s majority opinion was clear and firm: “The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry.” SOME STATES RESIST: In the 14 states that had been the last holdouts against same-sex marriages, some officials embraced the ruling and others resisted it. Clerks in some states refused to issue licenses, citing a three-week grace period allowed by the Supreme Court or forms now out of date that specify “bride” and “groom.” Mississippi blocked same-sex marriages after a few couples had wed, and a same-sex couple has yet to marry in Louisiana. Anthony Kennedy. In an interview Saturday, Merkley cited “Kennedy’s clarion call about dignity in the eyes of the law” but noted the need to extend the effort. “You can’t have dignity in the eyes of the law if you can still be discriminated against in mortgages,” Merkley said. More than half the states do not have laws protecting against discrimination based on sexual orientation, meaning that landlords, banks and restaurants in those states can discriminate. Winnie Stachelberg, executive vice president of external affairs at the Center for American Progress, said that the new effort needed to learn from the public campaigns for same-sex marriage and allowing openly gay service members to serve in the military. “We need a similar kind of public education campaign,” she said. “We have to take the case to the American people.” But this is a more difficult task, supporters said. Marriage and military service are traditionally public actions that are almost universally supported. But educating the public on the kind of discrimination that takes place behind the closed doors of a job interview or during the mortgage application process is a more difficult task. When he first started working on these issues, Merkley recalled a conversation with his daughter, then in middle school, in which she did not understand how that type of discrimination was not prohibited. “What’s hard is, people assume it’s already illegal,” he said. “The public doesn’t see the job interview when someone gets turned away,” he added. An unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket bound for the International Space Station exploded a couple of minutes after liftoff Sunday morning. It was the third cargo mission to the space station to be lost in recent months. Elon Musk, SpaceX’s founder tweeted that “there was an overpressure event in the upper stage liquid oxygen tank.” NASA officials said it was not clear what caused the explosion, and there was no negligence. While there was no one on board, the explosion of the rocket lost a lot of important equipment and research. The rocket was carrying more than 4,000 pounds of food and supplies to the space station, where American Scott Kelly is spending a year. The explosion also lost student experiments, a water filtration system, and a piece of hardware that would be used to help two new crew vehicles dock to the station. Before the launch, NASA said that the station had plenty of supplies on board and that the crew would be fine even if there was another failure. The explosion will raise questions about NASA’s plan to rely so heavily on contractors Boeing and SpaceX to get critical food and supplies to the space station. Both have now had explosions within eight months of each other. CHRISTIAN

A woman lays flowers at the scene of the mass shooting Saturday in Tunisia.
Trio of attacks signal ISIS’ reach TERRORISM The attacks appeared to have no connection in tactic or target. The beheading and failed attempt to blow up a chemical plant in France bore no operational resemblance to the suicide bombing of a mosque in Kuwait or the armed assault on a touristpacked beach in Tunisia. Even so, the outbreak of violence Friday was seen by counterterrorism officials and experts as part of an emerging pattern — each inspired by, if not directly attributable to, the Islamic State. U.S. officials and experts said the nearly simultaneous eruptions of violence on three continents are likely to intensify anxieties about the group’s expanding reach. U.S. officials said Friday that it was too early to determine
whether the attacks were coordinated by the Islamic State. The suspect in France reportedly told authorities of his ties to the militant group, and a decapitated corpse has become one of the group’s grisly signatures. The organization claimed responsibility for the attack in Tunisia, where at least 39 people were killed. The mosque bombing in Kuwait, where at least 27 people were killed, was quickly claimed by an Islamic State affiliate. A North African intelligence official said the geographically dispersed violence is a signal to al-Qaeda, its rival for influence among jihadists. “The message is: We can reach anywhere,” the official said. “It’s just not possible to watch everyone.” JEAN-CHARLES BRISARD, a counterterrorism expert based in Paris, explaining the difficulties in monitoring suspicious people. “We probably have 3,000 to 5,000 people in France who should be under surveillance,” Brisard said. “And we’ve got 3,000 people, a few more, doing that job.”

A senior U.S. official conceded Sunday that Iran nuclear talks will go past their Tuesday target date, as Iran’s foreign minister prepared to head home for consultations before returning to push for a breakthrough. Iranian media said Mohammed Javad Zarif’s trip was planned in advance. Still, the fact that he was leaving the talks so close to the Tuesday deadline reflected his need to get instructions on how to proceed on issues where the sides remain apart. Both sides recognize that there is leeway to extend to July 9. (AP) ISTANBUL
Turkish police use water cannons on gay pride rally Turkish police used water cannons and tear gas against gay pride marchers trying to rally in Istanbul’s central Taksim Square on Sunday, forcing the thousands of demonstrators to gather several blocks away. Within minutes, the noisy but otherwise peaceful rally restarted a few blocks away and grew to several thousand people as the day wore on. It’s not clear why police prevented the rally from gathering at Taksim, a traditional focal point for protests. (AP) WAVES, N.C.
Teen boy hospitalized after shark attack in N.C. An 18-year-old boy is the latest victim in a string of shark attacks along the North Carolina coast, according to news reports. The teenager was swimming with others off the Outer Banks about 4 p.m. Saturday when he sustained injuries from a shark to his right calf, buttocks and both hands, according to a news release posted on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Facebook Page. He was transported to a hospital in Norfolk, Va. There have been six shark attacks along the North Carolina coast in the past two weeks. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THREE POINTERS
Picks that fit perfectly
It’s not a Slam dunk
Aside from the top three picks in Thursday’s NBA draft, which other players could make an immediate impact with their new teams? JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)
Entering Wimbledon, Serena downplays her chances at completing a Grand Slam WIMBLEDON Serena Williams heads to Wimbledon halfway to a Grand Slam. If it were up to her, no one would notice. Williams prefers to downplay her chances of becoming the first tennis player in more than a quarter-century to win all four major tournaments — Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, U.S. Open — in the same season. “I haven’t done well at Wimbledon recently, so that’s the only one that’s kind of eluding me,” she said. “So I’m trying to get to that one, at least make it deep in the second week of that tournament.” When play begins at the grasscourt Grand Slam tournament today, Williams will be ranked No. 1, and seeded No. 1, and there is zero doubt that she is far and away the best tennis player on the planet at the moment. Already the Year of the Triple Crown in horse racing, 2015 could wind up being the Year of the Grand Slam in tennis and golf, with Jordan Spieth halfway to a four-for-four calendar year at
his sport’s major championships. In tennis, only two men and three women have ever done it. The last man was Rod Laver in 1969. The last woman was Steffi Graf in 1988. “Why not?” said Williams’ coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. “That’s probably the most difficult thing to do in tennis. But it’s possible.” With a dangerous serve and powerful groundstrokes, Williams’ game translates quite well to the slick surface at the All England Club, where she has won the championship five times: 2002, 2003, 2009, 2010 and 2012. And yet, here is what Williams had to say shortly after winning the French Open for her 20th Grand Slam trophy and third in a row: “To be perfectly honest, I’ve never really liked grass, and I just don’t know how I’ve done so well on it.” On her past two trips to Wimbledon, Williams bowed out in the fourth round in 2013, and the third round in 2014. “The monkey’s on my back.
3 Devin Booker No. 13 to the Suns
Phoenix was 10th in the NBA in 3-pointers attempted but 20th in 3-point percentage last season. Adding one of the best shooters in the draft should help their efficiency.
2 Sam Dekker No. 18 to the Rockets
GETTY IMAGES/ EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION
… I just consistently do terrible there,” she insisted. Williams is riding a 21-match winning streak and is the first woman to win three consecutive majors since — big surprise here — she took four in a row for a selfstyled “Serena Slam” in 2002-03. As for the possibility of completing a true Grand Slam or eventually surpassing Graf’s total of 22 majors, Williams is not all that keen about contemplating
such milestones. “I’m still playing, and when you’re still playing, you’re not thinking, ‘Well, I’m here in the history books, and soon I’ll be there.’ Because then you’ve become really satisfied,” she said. “And seeing that I’m the kind of person that I want to continue to play well, and I want to continue to win matches, I don’t want to be satisfied. I want to keep going.” HOWARD FENDRICH (AP)
Houston gets an athletic swingman who can spread the floor for James Harden and Dwight Howard. Dekker may have to battle for playing time, though.
1 Justise Winslow No. 10 to the Heat
Miami got the steal of the draft in Winslow, who has the tools to be the best player in this class. At the very least, he’ll bring energy and defensive intensity.
WIZARDS
Where will Pierce go?
Paul Pierce officially opted out of his contract with the Wizards and will become a free agent Wednesday. The 17-year veteran bypassed a $5.5 million player option but could still return to the Wizards, who can offer him $6.366 million for next year. Pierce, 37, could also go home to Los Angeles to play for the Clippers and his former coach Doc Rivers — though they can only offer him $3.37 million — or return to the Celtics, where he played 15 seasons. NATIONALS Stephen Strasburg is happy to be back healthy and pitching well again. Strasburg struck out a seasonhigh nine in seven strong innings to lead the Nationals to their eighth straight victory, 3-2 over the Phillies in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday. Strasburg (5-5) allowed two runs on four hits with one walk in his second good outing since returning from the disabled list. “It’s good to be back getting into a game and getting into a routine,” he said. “My fastball
command was good. Everything is off the fastball and I was locating it pretty good today.” Strasburg struggled in May, going 1-3 with an 8.00 ERA in five starts, and was placed on the disabled list with neck tightness following his May 29 start. He returned last Tuesday against Atlanta and pitched five shutout innings, giving up four hits, in a 3-1 win. “He pitched great,” Washington manager Matt Williams said. “We stretched him to [113] pitches and he had his good fastball even in the last inning. It’s nice that he’s

The proportion of Americans who support a bid to host the Olympics somewhere in the United States, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. Yet just 61 percent would support a bid in their local area. Fifty-two percent of respondents would support an Olympics in their local area if it were paid for with a combination of public and private funds. Approval ratings around Boston for its bid to host the 2024 Games have been grim — well under 50 percent. (AP)

healthy. It’s important for him to stretch it today and also important for our whole team.” Phillies starter Kevin Correia, making his fourth start for the Phillies, gave up three runs, one earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 51/3 innings. He knew he’d have to limit runs the way Strasburg was dealing. “He kind of has it going again, and you have to limit the runs as much as possible,” Correia said. “We were in the game and that’s what I was looking for.”

James Wolk, left, and Nora Arnezeder discuss the merits of tofu on “Zoo.”
MUST-SEE THIS WEEK
1 ‘Scream’ 10 p.m. Tuesday on MTV
CBS
In this new series based on the tongue-in-cheek 1996 horror flick, the Ghostfacemasked killer (with an updated, extra-eerie visage) uses viral videos instead of creepy landline phone calls. Bella Thorne stars.
All bark and no bite A show about animals on the attack makes the odd decision to take itself seriously TV REVIEW “Based on a novel by James Patterson (and Michael Ledwidge)” isn’t the most welcoming phrase for viewers in search of highly original storytelling, but for others it’s a stamp of summertime approval, the television equivalent of a light beach read left behind by the previous condo-rental tenant. This is your brand of ice cream or it isn’t, but a laughably over-serious pilot episode makes it difficult to take “Zoo” on its own terms. “Zoo,” premiering at 9 p.m. Tuesday, is a 13-episode action thriller about a sudden change in temperament among the world’s animals. From wild lions on the African plains to diabolical house
cats (and presumably more species as the story builds), animals have decided to work together as a unit to kill humans. “Mad Men’s” James Wolk (poor James Wolk, can’t we find something better for you?) stars as a zoologist who’s been slacking off as a safari guide in Botswana. When a group of male lions uncharacteristically raids a nearby resort, killing guests and employees, Jackson is haunted by the crackpot theories of his late father, who predicted such a calamity. Meanwhile, a Los Angeles newspaper reporter (Kristen Connolly) defies her editor (who is also her lover, because on TV shows, all female newspaper reporters are required to
CBS counts its chickens With two other successful summer series under its belt (“Under the Dome” and “Extant”) CBS seems confident lightning will strike a third time. “Zoo” got a straight-to-series order last year, skipping the usual pilot order. And according to Variety, CBS already sold the series to Netflix for $1 million an episode, meaning Season 1 will begin streaming after the finale. (EXPRESS)
sleep with their immediate male superiors) and pursues a farfetched tip that zoo animals are being fed unsafe food manufactured by a major corporation; she finds a sympathetic ear in
an animal pathologist (Billy Burke), and very quickly the global plot comes together. (Just wait until they find all the kitties perched in a tree above an elementary school, waiting to pounce. It’s cats doing Hitchock’s “The Birds”!) As the actors react with horror when computer-generated animals go on the offensive, you realize that “Zoo” might have worked better as a piece of intentional camp. It’s almost there (some of the cameos, such as “Veep’s” Reid Scott, hint at “Sharknado”-style slumming), but “Zoo’s” biggest mistake is taking the straightand-narrow approach. For all the mauling, it’s got very little bite.
2 ‘Monster in My Family’ 9 p.m. Wednesday on LMN
This new docuseries introduces the relatives of serial killers to members of the victims’ families in an effort to find mutual peace and closure. Trigger warning or just uncomfortable shudder alert?

REPRESENTATION
Getting inside the man’s world of ‘Magic Mike’ FILM When Jada Pinkett Smith got the call about the “Magic Mike” sequel, there was something she needed to know: Her part as Rome, the owner of a male strip club, was written for a man. “I was like, OK?” she said. Pinkett Smith had actually been thinking about strip clubs; though she’d never set foot in one, she had just wrapped a documentary for CNN that dealt with strippers and sex trafficking. And it turns out the film, which opens Wednesday, could have used a woman’s help, too. “We were just a bunch of guys sitting here trying to come up with what is inside of a woman’s mind,” said “Magic Mike” star and producer Channing Tatum. “And it’s like, ‘Idiots, you should just ask them.’ ” But Pinkett Smith still needed convincing. “I think the selling point for me was when Channing said, ‘Listen, I really think that there’s a level of responsibility and celebration that we can bring to this whole form,’ ” she recalled. “I thought that was a radical freaking idea.” To make Rome a woman, the filmmakers rested heavily on Pinkett Smith’s input on who exactly this club owner from Mike’s (Tatum) past should be. “I created a philosophy that this is a woman who looked at eroticism and sexuality as a gateway to enlightenment,” she said. LINDSEY BAHR (AP)
After criticism of the film academy’s overwhelmingly white Oscar nominees this year, the organization has announced a roster of potential new members that skews younger and more diverse. The academy announced 322 invited new members Friday, including Kevin Hart, below, Common, Emma Stone, Dev Patel, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Oyelowo, Elizabeth Banks, John Legend, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and “Dope” director Rick Famuyiwa. Academy Award nominees are automatically considered; others must be sponsored by two members of their branch of filmmaking. (AP)

Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe practices the look she throws to her critics after last Monday’s episode.
MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE
Singled out: Kaitlyn the Bachelorette shows ABC who’s the boss Last Monday, Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe did it with Nick Viall. And it wasn’t in the “fantasy suite” reserved for the final two suitors. It was midway through the season, during a group trip to Dublin. The next morning, she was wracked with guilt: Will her tryst jeopardize her relationships with the other guys on the show?
$54.2M
“Bachelorette Sex Scandal” was how People magazine put it. I beg to differ. Kaitlyn is a revolutionary. Past Bachelorettes and Bachelors were seemingly not allowed to say “I love you” until the very end. All the “dates” are engineered by the show and bear no resemblance to real world dating. Last week, for example, Kaitlyn lay in a coffin while the guys recited pretend eulogies. I can’t tell you how many times I haven’t been on a date like that!
Now Kaitlyn has broken the rules. She followed her heart (perhaps wisely, perhaps unwisely, since Nick seems to be a tool). She took the power. And that’s critical this season. There were two contenders to be Bachelorette and the guys voted for their favorite — a scenario clearly designed to diminish the women. But now Kaitlyn appears to be fighting back by being herself. “I was just trying to stay true to who I am and how I would be in a relationship,” she told People. The reason to keep watching this season is not to see who Kaitlyn does (or doesn’t) pick but to marvel at how this very real woman is clearly in charge. BOX OFFICE HAUL
The box office take of “Jurassic World” this weekend. Chris Pratt and the dinosaurs held the top spot for the third weekend in a row, pushing it past the $500 million mark domestically. “Inside Out,” meanwhile, finished at a close No. 2, earning $52.1 million — only a 42 percent drop from its first weekend in theaters. The weekend’s biggest new release, ”Ted 2,” opened far under expectations with $32.9 million, finishing third. (AP)

blog log
“Feel you should be getting more from this Kanye set? Whack on subtitles — am personally going on a existential journey caused by the lyrics.” @DARRYLR_ is entertained by the subtitles for Kanye West’s Glastonbury set on Saturday night. The rapper was headlining the British music festival, and whoever was manning the subtitles was having a hard time keeping up with his fast raps and censoring some unsavory language. “We ain’t got nothing to lose, motherducker” flashed on screen. At one point, the subtitles read: “He raps.”
“The problem with this type of sloppy reporting is that next time a real ISIS flag shows up at a gay pride march, no news outlet will want to report on it.” COMMENTER FORMERLY PEPIN THE SHORT AT SLATE .COM is disappointed in CNN’s coverage of London’s Gay
Pride March on Saturday. During a live report, Lucy Pawle described spotting an attempted re-creation of the Islamic State flag. In reality, it was a parody made of crude drawings of sex toys, not Arabic writing. News outlets were quick to point out the error, though CNN has yet to acknowledge it.

.COM understands the plight of the athletic retailer, which is in the midst of another mass recall. Lululemon, which had to recall yoga pants in 2013 because they became see-through after light wear, announced a plan to recall 318,00 drawstrings used in women’s hoodies. Users reported that the drawstring would snap back and hit the wearer in the face with metal anglets used to weigh the string down. The kicker, though, is that the hoodies aren’t being recalled — just the drawstring.
similarities between two famously heart wrenching movies/books and the story of Omar Al Shaikh. After the 16-year-old was diagnosed with leukemia, he began dating Amie Cresswell, also 16. When doctors gave him only days to live, the British teen proposed. With their parents’ blessings, the couple were married a couple of weeks ago, according to the Daily Mail. Just three days later, Omar died. His family said they were happy to have his dying wish come true.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) A turnabout is to be expected, but what happens as a result is likely to fulfill anything but expectation. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re likely to suspect even the most blameless as a result of a recent event that has you wondering what is real and what is not. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) While you may have resigned yourself to a plan that was less than ideal, you’re likely to hit upon something that is a big improvement. FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
That which is most significant may go unnoticed throughout much of the day. What happens after dark, however, captures the imagination. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You can insist on having your way and face some repercussions, or you can bend a little and accept another point of view. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll find yourself wishing that things were as they used to be, yet even you have to admit that you enjoy vast improvements nowadays.

Calling this a scandal would be misleading Hamptons residents are griping that a new home purchased by Madonna has benefited from unfair tax breaks. According to the New York Post, Madonna will be collecting tax benefits because she is using adjoining land for agricultural purposes: a tree farm. But locals told the Post that the land is just to shield the property’s $5 million mansion from paparazzi. (EXPRESS)
Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris are the highest-paid celebrity couple, according to Forbes’ annual Celebrity 100 list. That title was previously held by Beyonce and Jay Z. This year Forbes changed the list’s rules to only factor in annual income, meaning Swift’s and Harris’ huge year in music helped them top the list. Swift’s massively successful 2014 album “1989,” endorsement deals with Keds and Diet Coke, plus Harris’ 2014 album “Motion” and residency deal in Las Vegas helped net the couple more than $146 million last year, Forbes reported.
