RUN-INS WITH THE LAW

‘Fancy Seeing You Guys Here’ A would-be thief ran in to some bad times — and the arms of the law — outside a Tampa, Fla., convenience store. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies say 28-year-old Emmanuel Camper ran out of the Citgo Quick Mart on Sunday night after taking a beer without paying. As he ran out the door, several uniformed deputies who were there for another investigation heard the clerk yelling, “He was stealing that beer.” Deputies say Camper was already intoxicated and failed to see them or their patrol cars, which had the overhead lights on. But president has yet to endorse a national paid maternity leave Washington

President Barack Obama said Monday that the United States should join the rest of the industrialized world and offer paid leave for mothers of newborns. “Many women can’t even get a paid day off to give birth — now that’s a pretty low bar,” Obama said at the White House Summit on Working Families. “That, we should be able to take care of.” While some companies offer

paid family leave to attract workers, the 1993 Family Medical Leave Act only requires that employers provide unpaid leave for medical and family reasons. Obama praised California, Rhode Island and New Jersey for creating a state benefit. But he has not endorsed legislation that would create a similar national system funded by a payroll tax, and he pledged in his 2008 presidential campaign not to raise taxes on families making under $250,000 a year. When Obama came to the White House, he instituted six weeks of paid leave for his workers when they have a child, get sick or injured or need to care for an ailing family

Race is roiling the Republican Senate runoff in Mississippi, a state with a long history of racially divided politics where the GOP is mostly white and the Democratic Party is mostly black. While Cochran rarely mentions race, he readily acknowledges he’s seeking support from black and white voters. “I think it’s important for

everybody to participate,” he says. “Voting rights has been an issue of great importance in Mississippi.” Cochran’s campaign staff believes he would get a boost if voters who traditionally go for Democrats — black voters and union members — participate in the GOP runoff. The GOP nominee will be a heavy favorite in November, and several prominent black Democrats are supporting the incumbent as preferable to his primary challenger. EMILY WAGSTER PETTUS (AP)

Watchdog Slams VA for Not Addressing Problems

Report: Politics Had No Role in Sandusky Case

The Department of Veterans Affairs regularly uses a “harmless error” defense to deny that serious problems with VA medical care — ranging from unsanitary work practices to treatment delays — could affect patients, according to a federal watchdog agency. In a letter Monday, the Office of Special Counsel detailed 10 cases nationwide in which the VA and its Office of Medical Inspector acknowledged treatment issues but failed to acknowledge impacts on veterans. U.S. Special Counsel Carolyn Lerner wrote that the harmlesserror defense has “prevented the VA from acknowledging the severity of systemic problems.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A report released Monday detailing the handling of the Jerry Sandusky child molestation case faults police and prosecutors for long delays Sandusky in bringing charges but found no evidence that politics affected the investigation into the former Penn State assistant football coach. The report, commissioned by the Pennsylvania attorney general, blamed a three-year lapse in filing charges on communication problems and an expungement of a 1998 complaint about Sandusky. (AP)

The Supreme Court largely left intact Monday the Obama administration’s only existing program to limit power plant and factory emissions of the gases blamed for global warming, but the court also rebuked environmental regulators for taking too much authority into their own hands without congressional approval. 3 Journalists Given Prison Time in Egypt Seven-year sentence of Al-Jazeera workers decried as ‘draconian’ Cairo An Egyptian court convicted three Al-Jazeera journalists and sentenced them to seven years in prison each on terrorism-related charges in a verdict Monday that stunned their families and raised international outrage, with a chorus of voices denouncing the ruling as a blow to freedom of expression. The verdicts against Australian Peter Greste, Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian Baher Mohammed came after a 5-month trial that Amnesty International described as a “sham.” The group called Monday’s rulings “a dark day for media freedom in Egypt.” The three, who have been detained since December, contend they are being prosecuted simply for doing their jobs as journalists, covering Islamist protests against

Donetsk, Ukraine Pro-Russian insurgents in eastern Ukraine agreed Monday to respect a cease-fire declared by the Ukrainian president, raising hopes for an end to months of fighting that have killed hundreds and ravaged the country’s industrial heartland. The insurgents’ pledge to respect the cease-fire came on the first day of talks between a former Ukrainian president, the Russian ambassador, European officials and the eastern separatists who have declared independence. While the government side was nominally not represented, exPresident Leonid Kuchma attended the discussions at the request of the

rebel leaders who took part in Monday’s talks in Donetsk, said they would respect the cease-fire declared by Poroshenko. The insurgents had previously demanded the Ukrainian military withdraw its troops from the east as a condition for any talks, so Borodai’s statement Monday represented a softened stance that

raised expectations that the ceasefire could hold. The rebels, who have declared their border regions independent, also promised to release the observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe whom they have held hostage. Monday’s talks involved Kuchma, the Russian ambassador to Ukraine and an envoy from the OSCE. Poroshenko has ruled out talks with those he calls “terrorists,” so inviting Kuchma to mediate offered a way to conduct talks without the government’s formal engagement. Kuchma, who served as president from 1994-2005, comes from the east and is an astute political player respected by both sides. “If both sides hopefully observe [the cease-fire], then a normal peace process could start,” Kuchma said Monday. Tysons Corner, Va. Metro says it plans to start carrying rail passengers July 26 on its long-awaited Silver Line, capping five years of construction and more than a decade of political fights and contentious design work on a rapidtransit link between the D.C. area’s biggest economic hubs, Tysons Corner and downtown Washington. Barring any unforeseen glitches, the line’s first riders will begin boarding trains at the new Wiehle Avenue station at noon that Saturday, Metro General Manager Richard Sarles said Monday.

Hearing Goes On Despite a request from D.C. Council member Jack Evans to recess a hearing about the proposed D.C. United stadium during the U.S.-Germany game Thursday, Chairman Phil Mendelson said it will go on as planned. But they will accommodate fans who want to get out in time to watch. (T WP)

The $2.9 billion first phase is 11.4 miles of track from Wiehle Avenue in Reston to East Falls Church. It has four stations in Tysons Corner, which has grown to be a traffic-snarled colossus of retail and office development in the decades since the original Metrorail system was mapped in the 1960s. Overall, the Silver Line generally follows the Dulles Access Road through the commercial heart of Fairfax County, a corridor rich with high-tech firms, government contractors and other businesses in what has become the Washington area’s most populous jurisdiction. “This is going to transform our economy,” said Rep. Gerald Connolly, a former member and chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors who was elected to Congress

Potomac River. From the StadiumArmory station, the Silver Line will share tracks with the Blue Line to Largo Town Center. Metro estimates that 50,000 passenger trips each workday will begin or end at Silver Line stations but about 17,000 of those trips will be taken by customers who already use the system regularly. For some riders, the impact of the Silver Line will be a bit of inconvenience. The tunnel under the Potomac can handle 26 trains per hour. Adding Silver Line trains to the mix means Metro will be forced to run fewer Orange and Blue line trains. The project ’s 11-mile second phase — expected to cost $2.7 billion — is due to open in 2018.

‘Monster’ Rowhouses Anger Some in D.C. Washington They’re like skyscrapers in small villages: townhouses — but between 40 and 65 feet high — right next to squat, two-story rowhouses in neighborhoods from Petworth to NOMA to Adams Morgan. Their common nickname: popups. Their common epithet among neighbors and on local blogs: monsters. Middle fingers. These residences are spreading across the city, fueled by small developers eager to cash in on D.C.’s real estate boom and seize any inch of available real estate. Though developers have the right to build upward — and say they are providing needed housing stock — the city is evaluating how it can ensure that popups in some neighborhoods reflect their community’s character. D.C., which began seeing the first wave about 10 years ago, is now experiencing a rush. What began largely in Adams Morgan has come to streets all over. The pop-up bible is the PoPville blog, which for several years has chronicled their advance.

“This is about profit. It’s about the historic streetscape.” — JIM GR A H A M , D.C. COUNCIL MEMBER,

In the case of the Ava, which has been dubbed “the Monster” on V Street NW, the building is in a commercial zone that allows residences to be as high as 65 feet. The five-story structure is topped with a huge eye-shaped window that one PoPville-blog reader thought was like the evil “Eye of Sauron” from the “Lord of the Rings.” The middle unit, listed for about $749,000, and the penthouse, listed for about $800,000, have not been sold. A real estate agent for the building said the bottom unit, listed for about $400,000, is under contract. (AP)

Cover Story

It’s crumbling so quickly: Just 2∏ years after American troops came home, Iraq is back in crisis. And chaos in Iraq — a diverse nation that stands as a buffer zone between the mostly Sunni Mideast and mostly Shiite Iran — is troubling around the world. There were plenty of warnings, of course. CONNIE CASS (AP)

When did the trouble start? How far back do you want to go? A.D. 632: The split between the Shia and Sunni denominations dates to the death of the Prophet Muhammad and a dispute over who should succeed him as leader of the Muslims. 1916: The uneasy borders dividing the Middle East were set during World War I, when the French and English divvied up the lands of the defeated Ottoman Empire with little regard for religious or ethnic differences. 2003: A U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq and deposed Saddam Hussein, and mayhem broke out. Hussein had ruthlessly held the nation together for more than two decades, favoring his fellow Sunnis while wiping out multitudes of Shiites and Kurds. Americans hoped to replace him with a friendly democracy. They met waves of bombings, massacres and kidnappings in sectarian fighting that peaked in 2006 and 2007, when more U.S. troops arrived and helped to tamp down the violence. 2011: The U.S. pulled out after nearly nine years in Iraq and urged Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to craft a government that would share power among Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds. It didn’t work out. Sunnis complain they are excluded and abused by al-Maliki’s Shiite-dominated government. Kurds have focused on building up their autonomous enclave in northern Iraq. 2013: The situation in Iraq began deteriorating rapidly. Sunni protesters took to the streets, al-Qaeda-inspired militants stepped up their attacks, and fighting from Syria’s civil war spilled over into Iraq.

Who’s behind the recent unrest? Dispatches from Iraq have been featuring a jumble of letters new to many American ears: ISIS (or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), which is a Sunni insurgent group. Its previous name is more familiar: al-Qaeda in Iraq. ISIS — which uses beheadings and executions to enhance its reputation for brutality — wants to create an Islamic state in Iraq and in “the Levant,” a region stretching from southern Turkey into Egypt and encompassing Syria, Jordan and Israel.

Iraq’s Fall Into Chaos An Iraqi boy inspects the site of a car-bomb explosion in the mainly Shiite district of Sadr City in Baghdad last week. The blast came amid a weeklong militant offensive in which insurgents seized vast swathes of territory in northern Iraq.

Syrian rebels are mostly Sunnis, fighting a repressive government dominated by Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

The main al-Qaeda group formally disavowed ISIS in February.

The bloodshed in Syria revitalized the flagging ISIS: It joined the fight against Assad and began gathering new recruits. The U.S. also wants Assad out of Syria, but it is limiting assistance to Syrian rebels to avoid helping extremists such as ISIS.

What’s the Syrian connection?

How is this affecting oil production?

As the U.S. was winding down operations in Iraq in 2011, the Arab Spring protests were underway. In Syria, President Bashar Assad’s deadly crackdown on those demonstrators sparked a civil war. The

Current events in Iraq — the secondlargest OPEC crude exporter — have already had an impact on oil markets. On Monday, the price of crude oil hovered near a nine-month high. Northern oil fields

What is the U.S. doing? The U.S. is sending up to 300 advisers to Iraq, but President Barack Obama said Friday that “American forces will not return to combat in Iraq.” In a closed-door meeting in Baghdad on Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry, right, urged Iraq’s top Shiite leaders to give more government power to political opponents before ISIS gains even more ground. “This is a critical moment for Iraq’s future,” Kerry said at a news conference in Baghdad. “It is a moment of decision for Iraq’s leaders and it’s a moment of great urgency.” (AP)

imperiled by the militants’ advance have been shut down, and oil companies have begun evacuating workers elsewhere in the country. A senior Iraqi oil official said Baghdad has lost at least 400,000 barrels a day because of production cuts at oil fields in Kirkuk and nearby towns. Authorities also have had to shut down the Beiji refinery, the scene of fierce clashes.

Despite its threats, ISIS probably isn’t big enough to overrun Baghdad, the Shiiteheavy capital city of 7 million people, much less conquer all of Iraq. The real fear is that their campaign will spark a wider Sunni uprising, incite retaliation by Shiite militias and start a full-out religious war across the Middle East.

Is Baghdad on the brink?

Where does Iran come in?

ISIS’s bold and bloody sweep through northern and western Iraq this year belies its relatively small numbers — probably fewer than 10,000 fighters, according to U.S. estimates. How could a force that size take Fallujah, site of the biggest battle of the Iraq War, and capture Mosul, the second-largest city in Iraq?

Maybe on the American side, for a change.

For one thing, it’s the home team. Many residents of the Sunni heartland prefer the insurgents to al-Maliki’s government. That might change later if the group begins to enforce its Taliban-style version of Islamic law. The Iraqi army is awash in corruption, desertion and battered morale. Many Sunni and Kurd soldiers and police feel little loyalty to Baghdad. ISIS also appears to be getting help from Sunni tribes and elements of Hussein’s old Baath Party.

The list of complaints between the U.S. and Iran is long and grievous: The U.S. accused Iran of aiding Shiite militias that killed U.S. troops during the Iraq War. It says Iran sponsors global terrorists and poses a potential nuclear threat to Israel. The two nations also stand opposed on Syria, where Iran is propping up Assad. Yet when it comes to Iraq, their interests align. Both Iran and the U.S. want stability in Iraq; they share a common foe in ISIS. The Obama administration has made overtures to Iran about possibly working together on the problem, but that would mean teaming up to persuade Iraq’s government to make amends with the Sunnis and Kurds — not military cooperation. Iran already is helping Iraq strengthen its military and Shiite militias to battle the militant Sunni onslaught.

Dutch Beat Chile 2-0 to Top Group World Cup Leroy Fer scored a minute after coming on as a substitute to break the deadlock and help give the Netherlands a 2-0 victory over Chile on Monday and top Group B at the World Cup with three consecutive wins. Fer had only just replaced Wesley Sneijder when he rose almost unmarked in the Chile penalty area to put the Dutch ahead with a powerful 77th-minute header. Another substitute, Memphis Depay, then tapped in a cross from Arjen Robben in injury time to double the lead. Bot h teams had already advanced to the second round, but Chile’s first loss of the tournament consigned it to second place. In the other Group B match, defending champion Spain salvaged some World Cup pride with a convincing 3-0 victory over Australia. After losing their previous two matches, both teams took the field knowing they could not advance to the second round. (AP)

Rafael Marquez, Andres Guardado and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez scored in a 10-minute span in the second half, dooming a talented Croatia side to elimination from the group stage. T he Croats had to w in to advance and held the bulk of possession but had trouble seriously threatening goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who kept out all efforts until an 87th-minute consolation goal from Ivan Perisic. Then in the 82nd minute, Hernandez, the popular Manchester United striker who has been a second-half substitute in all three of Mexico’s matches, scored with a header after Herrera’s corner had glanced off the head of Marquez. Croatia didn’t score until it was too late, with Perisic sliding a shot past Ochoa after being set up by a neat backheel pass from Ivan Rakitic. It was the first goal Mexico has conceded in the World Cup, but “El Tri” hardly seemed to mind when the final whistle sounded and a lively, heavily Mexican crowd in Arena Pernambuco erupted. In the other Group A match, host Brazil routed Cameroon 4-1 to reach the knockout stage. Brazil finished Group A with seven points after two wins and a draw. World Cup The United States’ 2-2 World Cup draw with Portugal is almost certainly the most-watched soccer game ever in the U.S., an emphatic confirmation of the sport’s rising popularity in a country slower to embrace it than the rest of the world. The Nielsen company said that Sunday’s gripping game was seen by an average of 24.7 million viewers on ESPN and Univision. That matches it with the 24.7 million U.S. viewers who watched the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands. Viewing parties have pulled thousands of people into bars, public parks, movie theaters and other locations since the tournament began. “When we get back to the hotel and we hear about Grant Park in Chicago having 10,000 fans out to watch the game and friends and family are sending pictures and videos of what’s going on, it can’t help but push you on because we want to make every person watching back home proud of us and proud to watch our team,” U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley said. THE PRESCRIPTION FOR TODAY’S HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT MALADIES. THE JOHNS HOPKINS BUSINESS OF HEALTH CARE CERTIFICATE

Danny Espinosa entered Monday’s game with a team-high .303 average in June.

Prescription-strength business education from four world-class Hopkins schools.

Espinosa Taking Different Stance

Few names in health care evoke the respect that Johns Hopkins does. Few business programs have captured the attention of Forbes and the Wall Street Journal as the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School has.

Hitting adjustments have helped second baseman at the plate Nationals Danny Espinosa has a history of a low batting average and a high strikeout rate, but he may have found the solution to his hitting woes. Since the beginning of June, the Nationals second baseman has been working with hitting coach Rick Schu. Espinosa, who endured a rough 2013 season that ended with a stint in the minors, has widened his batting stance and he entered Monday’s game with a team-high .303 average for the month so far. “It’s helped simplify so there’s not as much movement,” Espinosa said. “It’s something I’m working on and trying to settle into.” In this past weekend’s fourgame series against the Braves, Espinosa posted five hits, two doubles and a walk. He also bunted for a single on Sunday. “If it’s there and I can take advantage of it to get an inning going, get on base to where we can score a run, then a bunt hit is like

hitting a single,” Espinosa said. Long considered a premier defensive infielder, Espinosa hasn’t recorded an error since May 20. Now that his bat has picked up, it raises the question of what to do with him once Bryce Harper returns from the disabled list. Manager Matt Williams previously suggested Harper would play left field, with Ryan Zimmerman moving back to the infield at third. Anthony Rendon would then move to second and Espinosa would head back to the bench. But, as Williams said on Sunday, rarely does anything in baseball go to plan. Espinosa’s recent improvements at the plate should continue to give him enough opportunities moving forward. “He’s becoming more and more comfortable,” Williams said. “Some time ago he made some changes, he opened up a little bit to see the baseball a little bit better. … He’s seeing it good, which is good for him. He works hard.” JASON BUT T (FOR E XPRESS)

Sloane Stephens is hardly accustomed to leaving a Grand Slam tournament this quickly. The 18th-seeded American’s run of reaching the second week at six consecutive majors — the longest active such streak among women — ended abruptly Monday at Wimbledon with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) first-round loss to 109th-ranked Maria Kirilenko of Russia. “It feels like the end of the world now, but fortunately it’s not,” Stephens said. “You’ve just got to go back and keep working.” She saved five match points while serving and trailing 6-5 in the second set. But in the tiebreaker, a wide forehand from Stephens allowed Kirilenko to convert her sixth match point. Kirilenko is engaged to threetime NHL MVP Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals, who has accompanied

There’s something in the air over at 2021 L St. NW: peppermint oil. On the 10th floor of the office building, a dozen people are dabbing it on their wrists to prepare for the stretch and tone class that takes over this conference room every Thursday. Tonight, the group will learn to massage themselves with tennis balls, feel their legs burn as they hold deep squats, and practice releasing tension as they lie flat on their backs with their eyes closed. But the most important lesson for the participants — who are employees of the four companies that share the building — is that they can all do it together. The companies split the services of Infinity Wellness, a local firm that teaches fitness, nutrition, mind-body techniques and ergonomics. The relationship started four years ago with the American Society of Hematology, which owns the building. When that organization contracted with Infinity Wellness, they began to hold classes on the top floor, in a conference space all of the building’s tenants use. “People would walk by and see us laughing,” says Lance Breger, president of Infinity Wellness. It didn’t take long for interest to grow

Walking The Walk More than 200 organizations are participating in National Employee Wellness Month (nationalemployee wellnessmonth .com) this June, including many in the D.C. area. George Mason University, a first-time celebrant, is touting several initiatives in honor of the observance. One program the school is particularly excited about: Walking Wednesdays. “We’d done them before, but we wanted more people to be involved and create a more sustainable event,” says GMU’s Linda Harber. Instead of having one leader tell people where to go on the 30-minute strolls each week, anyone on campus can take a turn being in charge. Two vice presidents have already signed up. V.H.

at the other three companies, but not everyone was ready to fund a separate wellness program. So Breger proposed a buildingwide program. This joint setup isn’t just more affordable, says Nicole Horst, human resources director for accounting firm Tate & Tryon. It’s also led to other perks: “It gives us a chance to get to know each other and other employees in the building.” Plus, the larger classes make the sessions extra energetic. For AtSite, a company whose mission is helping buildings perform better, this experiment seems particularly appropriate. AtSite isn’t just a tenant at 2021 L St. — it also manages the space, including the flexible conference area that’s worked so well for the group classes. But even just a shared lobby can serve as a focal point for a buildingwide initiative, says AtSite senior associate Janae Holloway. For a step challenge last year, Breger updated the results on a large poster that sat next to the elevator. People would look at their team’s numbers and then head for the stairs, Holloway says. Beyond the group classes, each company chooses which specific

services it wants, adds Kathleen Callaghy, program and operations coordinator for Clasp. The environmental nonprofit has tacked on monthly wellness seminars and routine healthy snack deliveries. These are the kinds of initiatives that Clasp executives had talked about for a while, Callaghy says. With Infinity Wellness in the building regularly, “it gave us a kick to do it,” she says. The American Society of Hematology prides itself on being a leader in wellness, says Matthew Gertzog, deputy executive director. So this year’s new option for employees is one-on-one coaching. Every quarter, everyone on staff is invited (but not forced) to meet with Breger to discuss health goals. “We have no interest in which goals are being set, just that a goal is set,” Gertzog says. As long as folks keep these appointments, they pay lower insurance premiums. The deal is a win-win, says Gertzog, who reveals his current intention is to stock his apartment with healthy food. Knowing he’ll be discussing his progress with Breger in a few weeks is keeping him on track. It’s only a matter of time until coaching is a widespread practice, he predicts. And, chances are, it’ll come even sooner to the rest of their building. VICKY HALLETT (EXPRESS)

Small Wonders What about wellness for really small companies, like startups with one or two employees? To calm the stressed-out entrepreneurs at WeWork’s Chinatown location, the business incubator recently had Lance Breger start a weekly meditation class. The ritual of sinking to the floor and focusing on nothing but her breathing lets Kristen Jones, 43, reboot. “We usually can’t shut down our brains,” she says. In an office just upstairs from the meditation room, loop88 CEO Dave

Weinberg has been taking part in more active breaks. Co-founder Ariel Remer, who’s based in Toronto, sends out messages every hour reminding Weinberg and their other employees around the globe to stop staring at their computers and do something. (Remer’s recommended routine is one minute of plank, 10 pushups and 10 squats.) The prompts sometimes go ignored, but they’ve created a cohesive culture at the company, Weinberg says. And they’ve strengthened his abs, he adds. V.H.

There’s a reason fitness instructors always say these three things One quick way to end a workout? Pass out. Fainting isn’t common at gyms, says Nick Clayton, personal training program manager for the National Strength and Conditioning Association, but he’s seen it happen. And in every case, it’s been because someone ignored a cardinal rule of exercise. Fitness instructors say lots of things that may or may not be true. (“You can do it,” for instance.) But there are commands they repeat that can’t be denied, unless you’d like to wind up with some very unwelcome consequences — and possibly collapsed in a heap on the floor. Remember to Breathe

Keep Drinking Water

Depriving the body of oxygen forces the heart to pump harder. As Clayton explains: “You’re not necessarily out of shape. You’re not getting the air necessary.” That’s why he emphasizes diaphragmatic breathing, particularly with stressed clients who tend to suck in gasps just to their neck and chest. (“If your collarbone rises and falls when you breathe, you’re likely a shallow breather,” Clayton says.) D.C.-based trainer Lisa Reed keeps clients oxygenated by telling them to “inhale for five, exhale for five.” Repeating that mantra — and reminding them to exhale during the exertion phase of an exercise — drills proper technique, which helps them lift more and stretch farther.

“The moment you’re dehydrated, it’s a disaster. Technique just goes,” Reed says. Plus, water can stave off headaches, cramps and several scarier scenarios — including fainting. Clayton encourages his clients to drink up before, during and after a workout. His trick for daily water consumption: He starts each morning by putting two rubber bands at the bottom of a 32-ounce water bottle, and fills it up. When he’s finished drinking what’s in there, he pushes one rubber band to the top and then repeats. You can tell you’re getting enough liquid, Clayton notes, by examining your urine color. You want it light yellow — like lemonade — he says. “But I don’t want to see it,” he adds.

Stick Around for The Cooldown You’ve got air. You’ve got water. Don’t stop now. Really, don’t stop, begs Reed, who notes that shutting down rather than cooling down can make you fall down. When you’re pushing yourself hard during a workout, she explains, your blood pressure spikes. So cutting off your activity abruptly without letting your body return to normal is a risky proposition. She insists all of her clients do something after intense exercise, whether it’s going for a light jog or pedaling a stationary bike. Clayton has found that saying, “I want you to get on the bike for five minutes so you won’t have a heart attack” usually does the trick when clients protest.

Deep (End) Ideas: Eric Ruiz, who teaches the new Aqua Zumba classes at Vida’s Penthouse Pool Club (1612 U St. NW; $30 for a drop-in; see vidafitness .com for dates), suggests spicing up your workout by trying these three moves in a pool: squat and jump (it’s gentler on the joints), lunge and push your palms forward repeatedly (you’ll feel the resistance fast) and kick your heels up and touch your opposite hand to foot (you’ll make a splash while strengthening your abs). Comedian Rossi Dies Steve Rossi, one half of the prolific comedy duo Allen & Rossi, died Sunday at age 82. The duo appeared regularly on “The Tonight Rossi Show With Johnny Carson” and “The Ed Sullivan Show.” They also toured comedy clubs nationwide and headlined shows in Las Vegas in the 1960s until they split up in 1968. Radio-Ready or Not Ed Sheeran tries out a new sound on his highly anticipated follow-up album, ‘X’

Worth a Listen Standout tracks from Ed Sheeran’s latest album, “X,” out now.

Yes, “Sing” is noteworthy for being a poppier departure from his usual fare, but the song’s video, in which Sheeran pals around with Pharrell Williams and a Sesame Street-style puppet of himself, is the best part. For proof he’s not just the sensitive guy with a guitar, check out “The Man,” in which Sheeran raps about drugs, drinks and an ex-girlfriend. “Don’t” is the most successful of his forays into pop here, his Suffolk accent spitting out a bitter tale of a bad romance with a pop star. And before you ask, no, Sheeran has repeatedly insisted, it’s not about his BFF Taylor Swift. Careful listeners suspect Ellie Goulding is the inspiration. (E XPRESS)

Music Promoting an album kills creativity, says Ed Sheeran, preferring to watch a World Cup game rather than talk about “X,” the anticipated follow-up to his 2011 debut, “+.” The 23-year-old singer-songwriter is drained and distracted from talking up the new album, out now, across the country. “It has to be done,” he shrugs, one ear on the U.S.-Ghana game. The English performer prefers the other parts of his job, writing songs and playing live. He created more than 100 songs to get the 12 tracks on “X,” which he pronounces “multiply.” The result is funkier than his folksy debut, which has sold more than 800,000 units and earned him a pair of Grammy nominations. “X,” with its refreshing new sound, is poised to find the same success. The album has already topped the iTunes sales chart after its first day out in the U.S. on Monday. Several tracks, including “Sing” and “The Man,” invite comparisons to Justin Timberlake for their falsetto vocals and dance beats. Sheeran appreciates the association. “He’s a very talented person and I’ve listened to ‘Justified’ a lot,” Sheeran said. “I definitely took influence from that.” Though Sheeran shares Timber-

lake’s sweet, almost cherubic image, with his mussed red hair and lowkey fashion sense, a hardness shows through, and not in the form of his sleeves of tattoos. Success is everything he hoped it would be, and he misses nothing from his pre-fame life. “It wasn’t that fun,” he said. But now he has the luxury of working with a handful of hit-making producers — Pharrell Williams, Benny Blanco, Jeff Bhasker and Rick Rubin — in his effort to craft a broader, more radio-friendly sound. “It’s weird, because they’re more polished producers but it’s a more raw sound,” Sheeran said, “so I think they brought an element of rawness to it.” SANDY COHEN (AP)

Here Comes the Daytime: “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” received its eighth trophy as outstanding entertainment talk show at the Daytime Emmy awards ceremony on Sunday. The “Steve Harvey” show was honored as outstanding informative talk show, while Steve Harvey won as best game show host for “Family Feud.” CBS led the networks, winning 14 awards. The ceremony streamed exclusively online, reflecting a shrinking daytime audience. (AP)

“Here’s some advice on how to get some time off from work: Have your daughter send a really cute letter to your employer, asking them to give you a day off. Bonus points if the letter is written in crayon.” — KARYNE LEVY AT BUSINESSINSIDER.COM

highlights how this strategy worked for one Google employee. A daughter wrote the above note to her father’s boss. He ended up not just getting his birthday off but the entire first week of July as well.

“The gym tax represents an expansion of the sales tax that fits today’s economy, which has long been shifting from a products footing to a services one … Higher prices for gyms and yoga studios could help to clear residents’ thinking about what they get out of the bargain.” — KRISTON CAPPS AT CITYLAB.COM thinks more

cities should follow the D.C. Council’s lead in expanding sales tax to include more servicebased businesses. This inevitably could lead to better experiences for those who actually use the services, like gym buffs, by motivating people who pay for services but rarely use them to curb frivolous spending.

“[Kohl’s] will begin selling Juicy-branded products this fall. Just in time for the early 2000s trend revival that’s right around the corner.” — ALEX RONAN AT NYMAG.COM/THECUT predicts

that despite Juicy Couture’s announcement last week that it is shuttering all its U.S. stores by the end of June, it’s definitely not the end of the brand best known for its terry cloth sportswear popular during the 2000s.

“It never occurred to him that other people just accumulate quarters as they go. Or find a change machine. Or employ a myriad of other options for locating quarters that have sustained humanity until now.” — NITASHA TIKU AT VALLEYWAG.GAWKER.COM

suggests it was Washboard co-founder Caleb Brown’s personal experience with doing laundry that led him to start the service, which mails you $20 in quarters for $26.99. “You’re on your own, you’re doing laundry, and there are pain points there that no one ever really cared about before,” Brown said.
