RENOWNED RACCOON

SHAGGY DOG STORY

JUST GO WITH IT

Intrepid animal scales new heights, captures hearts around the nation

To be fair, Whiskey is rarely associated with exceptional decision-making

This definitely isn’t just to round out today’s ‘animals in Minnesota’ theme

A raccoon that became an internet sensation by scaling a 25-story office tower in downtown St. Paul, Minn., was safely trapped Wednesday and released back into the wild. The raccoon’s adventures caused a stir on social media as it scaled the tower Tuesday, with many voicing concern for its safety or joking about the drama as its climb was livestreamed by several broadcasters. When it finally did reach the roof, baited traps were waiting. The raccoon was released on private property near the Twin Cities suburb of Shakopee. (AP)

Firefighters in the Minneapolis suburb of Spring Lake Park on Friday helped a 180-pound Saint Bernard named Whiskey who was stuck on the small roof of the overhang at a side door of his home. The homeowner’s mother was housesitting when Whiskey pushed out a window screen and jumped onto the second-story overhang. She and police tried to coax him back inside with treats, but to no avail, so they called firefighters. One firefighter on a ladder and two inside eventually managed to pull Whiskey safely into the house. (AP)

The sheriff’s office in Red Wing, Minn., got an unexpected visitor on Friday: a curious black bear. The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office shared photos on Facebook of the animal sniffing around its doors and peering into its windows. The post speculated that the animal was in fact searching for the bakery a few doors down. “No worries to the public as black bears are skittish and this one left the area as fast as it arrived,” it added. Commenters mostly replied with bad bear puns, none funny enough to reprint here. (EXPRESS)

A place to engage, interact It means not everybody will come to the museum. We’re closer to the performing arts in some ways because we don’t rely on the federal government for funding; this is a public recognition that they’re coming to us. They’re paying admission to support activities beyond what the government supports.

Director reflects on gender equality and the role of a museum

What’s different about women’s and men’s art? Is there something you can recognize when you see it? There are some women artists who really do represent their work differently, from a personal perspective. There are also women artists who work in a way that one couldn’t necessarily tell it was work by a woman artist. The purpose here is one of gender equality and the recognition of women artists’ accomplishments. They’re 51 percent of the artist population, and they’re not getting their due. What in your life prepared you for this job? Childhood rapture in a museum.

JOSHUA YOSPYN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT Susan Fisher Sterling, director of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, prefers the term “art by women” to “women’s art,” because “there’s no such thing as men’s art, either.” Sterling, 62, lives in Rockville.

Susan Fisher Sterling is the director of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Not only the art itself, but the activated, contemplative space. How do you predict what people are going to want to see? This is part desire on the part of our curators, and part thinking about what’s going on in the world, the zeitgeist, and part polling science. Our whole society is in the moment. So we understand people want to see more contemporary art — and

in a kind of context that gives them a way of thinking about the world, as opposed to the old way of doing exhibitions, where museums were seen as an authoritative voice. The idea for museums now is very much about exchange. How do you think being a paidadmission museum in a city of free museums affects who comes here?

How do you know a piece of art is good? [Laughs.] No, I get it. I believe that I know a piece is good when I have that chill, when I have that visceral reaction. Sometimes it’s a visceral reaction that’s positive: I have to see that. A lot of times in contemporary art I don’t know what I’m seeing, but I have that reaction: This is something I need to understand. It’s both an intellectual and a visceral, physical reaction. In some contemporary art, you can feel a sense of upset; you don’t really like it, but something is drawing you to it. You know it’s dangerous, or you know you don’t get it. It’s something that says, “You don’t like me, but we’re going to have this conversation.” RACHEL MANTEUFFEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Can Trump acolyte win Va.? VIRGINIA By placing an unabashed acolyte of President Trump at the top of the ticket, Virginia Republicans have energized their base but may have complicated GOP efforts to hang onto four crucial House seats, analysts said Wednesday. Corey Stewart won the nomination to challenge Sen. Tim Kaine, D, on Tuesday with about 19,000 fewer votes than he received in the 2017 GOP primary, when he lost his bid for the gubernatorial nomination to Ed Gillespie. Stewart pledged Wednesday to run on Trump’s economic and trade record, but has drawn attention in the past by wrapping himself in the Confederate battle flag and emphasizing gun rights in the wake of school shootings. Now, he will set the GOP tone for the November midterms in an increasingly Democratic state. “It’s been nine years since Republicans won a statewide election in Virginia, and at this rate it may be a while longer,” said David Wasserman, a House analyst at the nonpartisan Cook

of Supervisors since 2006, is known for mobilizing the hardline conservative and tea party wings of the Virginia GOP by embracing issues few establishment Republicans would touch. Kaine, the 2016 Democratic vice presidential nominee, said he will run for re-election as an “upbeat problem solver,” a stark contrast with Stewart, who has promised to be ruthless. “Corey has never failed to try to find ways to divide people, whether it’s harsh rhetoric about folks he doesn’t like or whether it’s even cozying up to purveyors of white supremacy or anti-Semitic views and sort of stoking those for his own political gain,” Kaine said. Dreading the prospect of another incendiary statewide run from Stewart, many Republican elected officials had staked their hopes on the campaign of Nick Freitas, a two-term state lawmaker and former green beret. Freitas lost to Stewart by about 5,200 votes, according to unofficial results. “It’s one of those things you don’t want to believe,” said Shaun Kenney, a blogger and former executive director of the state GOP, “and then it hits you in the face.” JENNA PORTNOY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

3 found fatally shot in home; 18-year-old man charged

Police say a teenager who took a stolen, loaded gun to a Montgomery County high school has been charged as an adult with several offenses. Police said Elijah Nyamekye, 17, brought the .38-caliber revolver Tuesday morning to Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville. Police found the gun — which was reported stolen in Pennsylvania — in his bag. Police spokesman Rick Goodale said the Silver Spring boy is not a Paint Branch student, and he fled after offering a fake name and student identification number. He was arrested off-campus and charged with possessing a stolen handgun and other offenses. (AP)

Valerie Ervin has dropped out of the Maryland governor’s race to endorse Rushern Baker in the Democratic primary. Ervin made the announcement Wednesday with the Prince George’s County executive, who is in a tight battle with former NAACP president Ben Jealous for the nomination. Ervin said Baker is the candidate who has the experience to lead from the start. Ervin decided last month to run for governor after her running mate, Kevin Kamenetz, died suddenly. She was unable to get her name on the ballot. The endorsement comes on the eve of the start of early voting. Maryland’s primary is June 26. (AP)

Antarctica losing ice rapidly New report concludes melt rate has tripled in the past decade

Comcast makes $65B offer for 21st Century Fox ANDREW SHEPHERD (UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS VIA AP)

ENVIRONMENT Antarctica’s ice sheet is melting at a rapidly increasing rate, now pouring more than 200 billion tons of ice into the ocean annually and raising sea levels a half-millimeter every year, a team of 80 scientists reported Wednesday. The melt rate has tripled in the past decade, the study concluded. If the acceleration continues, some of scientists’ worst fears about rising oceans could be realized, leaving low-lying cities and communities with less time to prepare than they had hoped. The result also reinforces that nations have a short window — perhaps no more than a decade — to cut greenhouse gas emissions if they hope to avert some of the worst consequences of climate change. Antarctica, the planet’s largest ice sheet, lost 219 billion tons of ice annually from 2012 through 2017 — approximately triple the 73 billion-ton melt rate of a decade ago, the scientists concluded. From 1992 through 1997, Antarctica lost 49 billion tons of ice annually.

Antarctica’s ice sheet is pouring more than 200 billion tons of ice into the ocean annually, a report said Wednesday.

The study is the product of a large group of Antarctic experts who collectively reviewed 24 recent measurements of Antarctic ice loss, reconciling their differences to produce the most definitive figures yet on changes in Antarctica. Their results were published Wednesday in the journal Nature. “We took all the estimates across all the different techniques, and we got this consensus,” said Isabella Velicogna, an

Antarctic expert at the University of California at Irvine and one of the many authors from institutions in 14 countries. “The detailed record shows an acceleration, starting around 2002,” Beata Csatho, one of the study authors and a glaciologist at the University at Buffalo, said in an email. Csatho noted that comparing the first and last five-year periods in the record reveals an even steeper acceleration.

“Actually, if you compare 19972002 to 2012-2017, the increase is even larger, a factor of more than 5!!” she wrote. The rapid, recent changes are almost entirely driven by the West Antarctic ice sheet, which scientists have long viewed as an Achilles’ heel. It is known to be losing ice rapidly because it is being melted from below by warm ocean waters, a process that is rendering its largest glaciers unstable. CHRIS MOONEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

BUSINESS Comcast made a $65 billion bid Wednesday for Fox’s entertainment businesses, setting up a battle with Disney. The bid comes just a day after a judge cleared AT&T’s takeover of Time Warner and rejected the government’s argument that it would hurt competition in cable and satellite TV and jack up costs to consumers. Comcast says its cash bid is 19 percent higher than the value of Disney’s offer as of Wednesday. Disney’s offer was for $52.5 billion when it was made in December, though the final value will depend on the stock price at the closing. “This is a golden offer that will put considerable pressure on [Disney CEO Bob] Iger and Disney to step up their game on another bid,” GBH Insights analyst Dan Ives said. “This is even higher than [Wall Street] thought.” The battle for Twenty-First Century Fox comes as traditional entertainment companies try to amass more content to compete better with companies such as Amazon and Netflix. If the Comcast bid succeeds, a major cable distributor would control even more channels on its lineup and those of its rivals. That could lead to higher cable bills or make it more difficult for online alternatives to emerge. For Disney, a successful Comcast bid could make Disney’s planned streaming service less attractive, without the Fox video content. MAE ANDERSON (AP)

nation+world Central bank also signals it may step up its pace of rate hikes ECONOMY The Federal Reserve took note of a resilient U.S. economy Wednesday by raising its benchmark interest rate for the second time this year and signaling that it may step up its pace of rate increases. The Fed now foresees four rate hikes this year, up from the three it had previously forecast. The action means consumers and businesses will face higher loan rates over time. The central bank raised its key short-term rate by a modest

quarter-point to a still-low range of 1.75 percent to 2 percent. The move reflects the steadiness of growth, the job market’s strength and inflation that’s reaching the Fed’s 2 percent target level. Economists said the Fed left little doubt that it’s prepared to increase the pace of its credit tightening to guard against high inflation later on. “The labor market is getting tighter, and price pressures are picking up,” said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at bankrate.com. “The Fed is prepared to be quicker about pushing rates higher.” It was the Fed’s seventh rate increase since 2015, and it followed

an increase in March this year. The announcement helped resolve a debate in financial markets over whether the Fed under Jerome Powell, who succeeded Janet Yellen as chairman in February, might see a need to signal a possible acceleration in rate hikes. The statement the Fed issued Wednesday suggested he does. Besides raising its projection for rate increases this year, the Fed removed a key sentence from the previous statement that had been viewed as foreseeing a need to keep rates low for an extended period. The Fed’s new projection for the pace of rate hikes shows four this year, three in 2019 and one in 2020. MARTIN CRUTSINGER (AP)

Two bedrooms out of reach on minimum wage The economy’s booming. Some states have raised minimum wages. But even with recent wage growth for the lowestpaid workers, there is still nowhere in the country where someone working a full-time minimum-wage job could afford to rent a modest twobedroom apartment, according to an annual report released Wednesday by the National Low Income Housing Coalition. In Arkansas, the state with the cheapest housing in the country, one would need to earn $13.84 an hour — about $29,000 a year — to afford a two-bedroom apartment. The minimum wage in Arkansas is $8.50 an hour. Even the $15 living wage Democrats champion wouldn’t make a dent in most states. In Hawaii, the state with the most expensive housing, one would have to make $36.13 hourly — about $75,000 a year — to afford a decent two-bedroom. The minimum wage is $10.10. According to the report, a one-bedroom is affordable for minimum-wage workers in only 22 counties in five states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington. Their minimum wages are higher than the federal minimum of $7.25. The report estimates that renters nationally make an average of $16.88 an hour. That means even those making above minimum wage struggle to afford rent. TRACY JAN

Yemeni pro-government forces and armored vehicles arrive Wednesday in al-Durayhimi district, near the Hodeida international airport.

Saudi Arabia-led forces attack Yemen port city Aid agencies warn of dire civilian crisis amid push to take Hodeida HODEIDA, YEMEN A Saudi Arabia-led military coalition and its local allies launched a long-anticipated offensive on the Yemeni port city of Hodeida early Wednesday, opening a new front in the country’s intractable civil conflict and raising fears for millions of civilians. The offensive, which was announced by Yemen’s government, is aimed at dislodging Iranian-allied rebels known as Houthis, who control Hodeida on Yemen’s Red Sea coast. The port is the main entry point for food and humanitarian aid supplies that millions rely on in

Houthi-controlled areas. The government and its Persian Gulf allies argue that defeating the Houthis in the city would force them to the negotiating table more than three years after they took over much of Yemen’s north, setting off a civil war and a devastating humanitarian crisis in the Arab world’s poorest country. Aid agencies have warned that the Hodeida offensive would almost certainly deepen civilian suffering, threatening nearly half a million people who live in the city while cutting off critical aid at a time when a third of Yemen’s citizens are on the brink of famine. The United Nations had led an intensive diplomatic push to avert the offensive, which the

Saudi-led coalition, and especially the United Arab Emirates, had long been determined to pursue. Yemeni security officials quoted by The Associated Press said 2,000 troops had crossed the Red Sea from a UAE naval base in Eritrea, with plans to seize the port at Hodeida. A separate Yemeni-UAE force was advancing on the city from the south, the officials said. Aid agencies and U.N. officials warned that in a protracted battle for the city, devastating harm to civilians would be nearly impossible to avert. “I cannot overemphasize that there is no military solution to the conflict,” U.N. envoy Martin Griffiths said in a statement. Pruitt enlisted donor friends to get wife a job POLITICS Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt last year had a top aide help contact Republican donors who might offer his wife a job, eventually securing her a position at a conservative political group that has backed him for years, according to multiple individuals familiar with the matter. When one donor, Doug Deason, said he could not hire Marlyn Pruitt because of a conflict of interest, Pruitt continued to solicit his help in trying to find other possibilities. A spokesman for the Judicial Crisis Network confirmed Tuesday that it employed the onetime school nurse “temporarily as an independent contractor.” The group received her résumé from Leonard Leo, executive vice president of the Federalist Society. The two organizations have financial ties. Leo is a prominent Pruitt backer and longtime friend who was involved in arrangements for the administrator’s visit to Italy last year. Marlyn Pruitt left the JCN earlier this year, the spokesman said. But the search and hiring raises more ethics questions about Scott Pruitt’s use of EPA staff for his personal benefit. Neither Pruitt’s counsel, Cleta Mitchell, nor Marlyn Pruitt responded to requests for comment. JULIET EILPERIN, JOSH DAWSEY, BRADY DENNIS AND SHAWN BOBURG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trump: N. Korea not a threat NATIONAL SECURITY Returning to Washington on Wednesday, President Trump amped up claims of a highly successful summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as Democrats — and even some Republicans — grew increasingly skeptical about what had been accomplished in Singapore. In a series of tweets, Trump declared that there is “no longer” a nuclear threat from the rogue regime and lashed out at those who questioned what he had achieved, branding the media as “Our Country’s biggest enemy.” Trump’s glowing assessment followed the high-profile summit, which yielded a renewed promise by Kim to “denuclearize” the Korean Peninsula that was scant on details. Though many lawmakers and analysts have applauded Trump’s efforts, questions persisted Wednesday about what fundamentally had changed. Trump, who has touted what he said was the trust built with the North Korean leader over

the course of a few hours, cast his meeting as a game-changer that had already reduced the possibility of military conflict. “Just landed — a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea,” the president said on Twitter. Trump’s rosy assessment was

ridiculed by Democratic lawmakers, who suggested that North Korea remains a serious threat. “What planet is the president on?” Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said during remarks on the Senate floor. “Saying it doesn’t make it so. North Korea still has nuclear weapons. It still has ICBMs.” Rep. Adam B. Schiff, D-Calif.,

A few takeaways from latest primary results Tuesday brought another set of primaries — in Maine, South Carolina, Nevada, North Dakota and Virginia — and another set of surprises. Here are some takeaways. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP) Nevada

Pimp Dennis Hof, owner of half a dozen legal brothels in Nevada and star of the HBO reality series “Cathouse,” won a GOP primary for the state Legislature, ousting a threeterm lawmaker. He’ll face Democrat Lesia Romanov in November, and will be favored in the Republican-leaning Assembly district. “It’s all because Donald Trump was the Christopher Columbus for me,” Hof said. “He found the way and I jumped on it.”

Nearly three times as many women are running this year for both the House and the Senate as have run in any year since 1974, according to data from Rutgers University’s Center for American Women and Politics. On Tuesday, women won Democratic House primaries in Maine, Nevada (in two districts), South Carolina and Virginia (six districts); they won GOP House primaries in Virginia, Nevada and South Carolina.

President Trump is crediting his tweet in part for the defeat of a Republican who has been critical of him. Rep. Katie Arrington narrowly beat Rep. Mark Sanford after Trump tweeted Tuesday that Sanford had been unhelpful, adding, “He is better off in Argentina.” That was a reference to Sanford’s surprise disappearance from the state as governor, which he later revealed was to further his affair with an Argentine woman.

also mocked Trump, saying: “One trip and it’s ‘mission accomplished,’ Mr. President?” A document signed by Trump and Kim provided virtually no detail beyond the stated commitment to “denuclearize,” a promise that Pyongyang has made and ignored many times. Despite no formal timetable or catalogue of the nation’s nuclear weapons, Trump has repeatedly said he trusts Kim to follow through. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said it’s understandable for Trump to be optimistic because “he’s the guy negotiating.” “But for the rest of us who are watching and know the history of North Korea, we should be skeptical,” Rubio said. “This is a country that’s made promises before and has broken them.” On Wednesday, Trump also defended a major concession made to North Korea while he was in Singapore: that the U.S. would halt joint military exercises with South Korean forces on the Korean Peninsula. “We save a fortune by not doing war games, as long as we are negotiating in good faith — which both sides are!” he said. Cohen hunting for new lawyers in FBI probe POLITICS Michael Cohen, President Trump’s personal lawyer, is searching for a new legal team to represent him in an FBI investigation of his business dealings. A person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Cohen’s current legal team plans to stop handling the case and that Cohen has begun a hunt for new attorneys. It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted the change or who would take over. The person, who wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity, also noted that Cohen has not yet held any discussions with prosecutors about potentially cooperating in the investigation. Cohen has been represented since 2017 by Stephen Ryan, a Washington lawyer initially hired to prepare him for congressional testimony about alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election. After FBI agents raided Cohen’s office in April, Ryan and his New York partner, Todd Harrison, went to court to try to keep investigators from seeing some of the files on the grounds that they were protected by attorney-client privilege. The pair, along with lawyers for Trump, has been working for weeks to identify documents that should be withheld from prosecutors. The legal teams were facing a deadline of the end of this week to get much of that work complete. TOM HAYS (AP)

Caps face tricky offseason NHL Roughly 30 minutes after Brian MacLellan watched Capitals cornerstones Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom hoist the Stanley Cup, the general manager was asked the question that every champion gets: Can you do it again next season? “I would assume we get some confidence out of this. … Our young guys are growing. Our older guys are experienced with how to handle the pressure, how to handle tough situations,” MacLellan said. “I see no reason why we can’t keep it going.” MacLellan’s challenge now is to keep this improbable group together. This offseason, Washington must address its coach’s future as well as several pending free agents under salary cap constraints. This season was the last of coach Barry Trotz’s four-year deal. Both he and the front office agreed to wait until after the season to address his future. “If he wants to be back, he’ll be back,” MacLellan said in

Stanley Cup roster will be difficult to maintain with current cap space

Capitals coach Barry Trotz, top left, and (clockwise) players John Carlson, Jay Beagle and Tom Wilson are all due new contracts for next season.

Las Vegas on Thursday night after the Cup-clinching victory. Immediately after the win, Trotz said he “absolutely” sees a future for himself in Washington. But he also has options. The New York Islanders have a vacancy that could appeal to Trotz. Or, at age 55, he may prefer to step away. If Trotz did walk, associate coach Todd Reirden

would likely step in. Washington’s top free agent priority will be John Carlson, who is expected to receive a significant pay bump after leading all NHL defensemen in scoring with 15 goals and 53 assists. He has been on a cap-friendly contract with an average annual value of roughly $4 million for six seasons. Some project his

next deal will pay twice that, even if Washington gives him a maximum term of eight years. MacLellan said the Caps are “going to do our best” with Carlson, and Rick Curran, Carlson’s agent, recently said he assured the GM that “John’s preference would be to stay in Washington.” Forward Tom Wilson is a restricted free agent. After scoring 14 goals and with 21 assists while playing mostly on a top line, he has earned a raise from his twoyear, $4 million bridge deal. Before the playoffs started, MacLellan said re-signing defenseman Michal Kempny, a rental trade-deadline addition, was a consideration after how well Kempny fit into the Capitals’ top-four corps beside Carlson. Forward Devante Smith-Pelly, who scored seven playoff goals, is a restricted free agent, and his impressive postseason may make him too expensive for the Caps. Fourth-line center Jay Beagle is an unrestricted free agent, and with the expected constraints, it’s likely the Capitals will choose to replace the 32-year-old with less expensive options such as Chandler Stephenson or Travis Boyd. He won the U.S. Open in 2016 and was the runnerup the year before that. This year he has seven top-10 finishes and two wins, including one Sunday in Memphis that saw him hole out from 170 yards to eagle No. 18 and regain the No. 1 world ranking.

Despite several close calls, the three-time U.S. Open champ is still hunting for his first win after four back surgeries. Woods, 42, is playing in his 20th U.S. Open — his first since 2015 — and will sleep on his 155-foot yacht at a nearby harbor to avoid traffic.

He has eight top-five finishes at majors but is still seeking his first Grand Slam win. In April, he came up one shot short of Patrick Reed at the Masters. At 29, Fowler is in his prime and already in a celebratory mood — he got engaged on Sunday.

The Englishman won his only Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open five years ago, and he’s already tied his career-high with two wins this year. His birdie average (4.83) is the best on the PGA Tour, and he has the second best scoring average (69.346).

Rizzo defends Harper after anonymous jab As his Nationals took batting practice before a 3-0 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday evening, general manager Mike Rizzo offered a seething defense of Bryce Harper. A day earlier, an anonymous NL executive told website FanRag Sports that the outfielder was “overrated” and “a selfish, losing player.” “I think it’s just totally unfair on so many levels,” Rizzo said. “First of all, the premise is entirely wrong. Bryce Harper is a winner. He’s been a winner his whole life. He’s been a Rookie of the Year, five-time All-Star, an MVP. He’s won more games since he’s been called up to the big leagues than any player in the major leagues.” Rizzo went on to reference Harper’s work in the community and deride the anonymous comments, reportedly offered in three text messages: “It’s cowardly, it’s chicken s---, and it’s gutless,” Rizzo said. Harper, 25, arrived at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday with an NL-leading 19 homers and a .228 batting average knowing the spotlight would beam in his direction because it was the first time the soon-to-be-free-agent and childhood Yankees fan would play in the Bronx since 2015. Harper was hit by two pitches Tuesday and left the game in the eighth inning. X-rays on his toe were negative, and he said he was “fine.” JORGE CASTILLO (TWP)

The classic argument RUSSIA For the past decade, the Ballon d’Or market has been defined by a duopoly. Take a glance at the past 10 winners of the top individual honor in men’s soccer and the breakdown says it all: five titles for Cristiano Ronaldo, five for Lionel Messi. Although the Champions League superstars are intrinsically linked, they couldn’t be more different. Ronaldo is the quintessential soccer celebrity, a marketing maestro at Real Madrid whose brand has planted flags from Beijing to Brooklyn. The Portuguese forward is often lambasted as a diva obsessed with individual glory. But when you score as many goals as him, does it matter? At 5 feet 7, Messi is physically dwarfed by his 6-foot-2 rival. Ronaldo’s outsized personality overwhelms the Argentine as well. But while Ronaldo is a more purely prolific scorer, his counterpart at archrival Barcelona is the complete package — a crafty speedster with the ability to kickstart attacks, deliver the final pass and bury chances of his own. On the club level, their trophy cases are filled to the brim. Ronaldo has five Champions League crowns; Messi has four. Ronaldo has five domestic league titles, spanning stints with Manchester United and Madrid; Messi has nine, all with Barca. For two players who each belong in the “greatest player of all time” conversation, the World Cup represents a glaring hole on their

résumés. For Ronaldo, 33, and Messi, soon to be 31, this World Cup in Russia likely represents a final shot at the international game’s most elusive prize. And while deep-pocketed clubs stack the deck with the finest players to ensure plentiful trophies, the international game features much more parity. For Ronaldo, this summer’s task is steep. Portugal’s squad is populated with promising prospects and gritty veterans, but the side lacks star power beyond its charismatic captain. Ronaldo claimed a major piece of international silverware anyway, directing a run to the Euro 2016 title. “I always say I never win something for the Portugal national team — but I win tonight,” an emotional Ronaldo said in July 2016, after a 1-0 victory over France in the European Championship final. “It’s something unbelievable in my career, and something that I deserve.” The World Cup, of course, is still a priority for Ronaldo, but he’ll be revered in Portugal whether he wins it or not. Messi’s relationship with Argentina is more complicated, even though he — like Ronaldo — is his nation’s all-time leading scorer. After Germany defeated Argentina in extra time of the 2014 World Cup final, Messi and Co. fell to Chile on penalties in the 2015 and 2016 Copa America title games. To date, Messi has never emerged victorious from a toplevel international tournament. That’s no small lapse for

Ronaldo and Messi are universally accepted as the top two soccer talents on the planet. The World Cup may help decide who’s No. 1.

Argentina, a two-time World Cup champion where soccer is a huge source of national pride. This is the nation that produced the legendary Diego Maradona, who carried the Albiceleste to their last World Cup win in 1986. More recently, the Argentine pipeline has gifted Messi with a supporting cast featuring such generational talents as Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria and Javier Mascherano. So until Messi lifts a trophy, he’ll be resented back home and viewed as a lesser version of Maradona — another bombastic foil for the diminutive forward. That burden was apparent when Messi hastily announced he was

thing I wanted the most, but I couldn’t get it, so I think it’s over,” Messi told reporters. “There’s a lot of people who want this, who obviously are not satisfied, as we are not satisfied.” Messi, of course, reversed that decision, appearing for Argentina less than two months later. If there’s one thing Messi and Ronaldo do share, it’s a deep passion for wearing the national colors. For two players who have won nearly all there is to win, it’s only natural to crave the grand prize. When it comes time to reflect on the faces of an era, neither star wants that asterisk on his legacy. THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

The next tier of top talents

WHO TO WATCH

Youngsters on the rise The World Cup offers a platform like no other, as an enticing prospect can make the leap to full-fledged stardom in a matter of weeks. Here are four rising talents to keep an eye on: T.F.

With Lionel Messi, soon to be 31, and Cristiano Ronaldo, 33, nearing their final acts on the World Cup stage, there will soon be room for fresh faces to emerge at the top of the soccer hierarchy. So let’s take a look at eight elite players on their tails who — with a summer to remember in Russia — could ascend into the debate over who is the “best player in the world.” THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

Harry Kane

Midfielder, France

Long pegged as the next big thing, the 26-year-old lived up to the hype over four trophy-laden seasons at Barca, then joined Paris SaintGermain last summer in a recordshattering $263 million transfer. Back from a foot injury, Neymar will lead a redemption-seeking Brazil team that failed spectacularly with a fourthplace finish on home soil in 2014.

If any player could end Messi and Ronaldo’s grip on the Ballon d’Or this year, it’s Salah. The 25-year-old netted 32 goals for Liverpool en route to the English Premier League scoring crown, and though a shoulder injury sidelined him early in last month’s Champions League final loss, he’s still expected to factor into Egypt’s first World Cup since 1990.

The Tottenham striker is the face of a young Three Lions squad looking to turn the page on the nation’s snakebitten reputation. The youngest England captain in World Cup history, Kane, 24, has racked up 105 goals over the past four EPL seasons. A prolific tournament would only add to his price tag as Europe’s top clubs contemplate a big-money move.

Attacking catalyst Antoine Griezmann may be France’s best player, but Pogba, 25, could be the X-factor that decides whether Les Bleus cash in on their potential and go all the way in Russia. A flashy midfielder known for his varying hairstyles and social-media antics, the Manchester United star is the key to France’s on-the-ball rhythm.

The 19-year-old Frenchman followed Neymar in making a big-money move to Paris Saint-Germain last summer, then scored 21 goals in all competitions for his new club. Mbappe looms large for a France team lacking traditional strikers.

Gabriel Jesus Just 21, the Manchester City striker could post gaudy numbers as the primary beneficiary of Brazil’s high-flying attack, which includes such orchestrators as Philippe Coutinho, Willian and, of course, Neymar.

After leading the EPL with 16 assists this past season, the Manchester City midfielder will pull the strings for dark-horse contender Belgium. De Bruyne, 26, has a deft touch and his knack for finding the final ball makes him perhaps the world’s best pure playmaker. Teammates Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard will give him plenty of options to pick out.

For a Spain squad thrown into chaos by the firing of coach Julen Lopetegui on Wednesday, just two days the team’s opening game, having the world’s best shot-stopper is a welcome dose of stability. After sitting behind the disastrous Iker Casillas four years ago in Brazil, Manchester United’s de Gea, 27, is ready for the spotlight.

This World Cup offers no more peculiar redemption story than that of Suarez, who earned a nine-match international suspension for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini four years ago. Still one of the world’s most prolific pure goal-scorers at age 31, the Barcelona striker leads a Uruguay team positioned for a deep run thanks to a forgiving draw.

The 28-year-old Real Madrid midfielder is an appropriate headliner for a quietly efficient German team that won it all in Brazil without leaning on any one star. A midfield circulator who excels at dictating the tempo, Kroos does the work on both sides of the ball that allows Germany’s array of attacking talent to thrive.

Joe Hart, goalie (England/West Ham)

Cesc Fabregas, midfielder (Spain/Chelsea)

Alvaro Morata, forward (Spain, Chelsea)

Argentina could field an absolute juggernaut of an attack if coach Jorge Sampaoli can figure out how to get Lionel Messi and Dybala — Juventus’ 24-year-old playmaker — to co-exist with similar attacking styles.

Hirving Lozano Mexico’s quest to end its burdensome streak of six straight secondround exits at the World Cup may hinge on Lozano, 22, a fleetfooted winger who is coming off a 17-goal season for PSV in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Group D

Russia, Uruguay, Egypt, Saudi Arabia

Portugal, Spain, Iran, Morocco

France, Peru, Denmark, Australia

Argentina, Croatia, Iceland, Nigeria

Favorite: Uruguay. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) and Lionel Messi (Barcelona) scored more goals in the Spanish La Liga than Luis Suarez (25) last season. Led by the Barcelona striker and Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani (28 goals in 30 Ligue 1 matches) up top, producing goals shouldn’t be a problem for the No. 14 team in FIFA’s world rankings.

Favorite: Portugal. If Ronaldo is the chiseled chin of FIFA’s fourth-ranked squad, central defenders Pepe and Bruno Alves make up the backbone. At 35 and 36, respectively, fitness could be an issue for the pair, but they’ve combined for four previous World Cup appearances and helped secure shutouts against Wales and France en route to the 2016 Euro crown.

Favorite: Argentina. A 6-1 loss to Spain with Messi sidelined in a March friendly underscored the striker’s importance to his national club. Forward Sergio Aguero, 30, is primed for his this third World Cup after a season in which he netted the thirdmost goals in England, racking up 21 in 25 Premier League matches for Manchester City last season.

Challenger: Russia. The host country’s ranking has plummeted from 24th in the world in 2015 to 70th today, last among all the World Cup squads. Russia’s best hope is that Egyptian goal-scoring genius Mohamed Salah (shoulder) is sidelined or diminished for its June 19 match with the Pharaohs.

Challenger: Spain. Portugal’s Iberian rival makes this perhaps the most top-heavy group of all. Midfielder Andres Iniesta, the lone goal-scorer in the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa, is still a technical marvel at age 34. Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea posted 18 clean sheets in 37 Premier League matches last season.

Favorite: France. Although no one can predict what the French will get out of midfielder Paul Pogba, France has a proven finisher in Antoine Griezmann. The Atletico Madrid attacker scored a tournament-high six goals in seven European Championship matches for the second-place side in 2016. Manager Didier Deschamps captained Les Bleus to titles at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. Challenger: Denmark. Ranked 12th in the world by FIFA, the Danes are a threat to rob France (7th) or Peru (11th) of a spot in the knockout stage. Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen is equal parts creator and facilitator — he had 10 goals and 10 assists in 37 Premier League matches last season.

Fun fact: Egypt has appeared in only two previous World Cups, qualifying in 1934 and 1990, but has never advanced out of the group stage. At 45 years old, goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary is expected to become the oldest man to ever play in the storied tournament.

Fun fact: Spanish defender Gerard Pique has indicated he will retire from international soccer after the World Cup because of tension stemming from his support of Catalan independence. The 31-year-old Barcelona defender has been booed by Spain fans because of his political views.

Fun fact: Peru captain Paolo Guerrero is eligible to play after a Swiss court put a stay on a doping suspension that would have sidelined him for his nation’s first World Cup in 36 years. In a show of solidarity, the captains of France, Australia and Denmark signed a letter endorsing his reinstatement.

Predicted order of finish: Uruguay, Egypt, Russia, Saudi Arabia

Predicted order of finish: Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran

Predicted order of finish: France, Peru, Denmark, Australia

Challenger: Iceland. Argentina and Croatia are brimming with players who are established in Europe, but the best way to combat all that skill may be rugged tackling and Viking bloodlines. A maiden voyage to the World Cup won’t frighten Iceland — in its first European Championship appearance two years ago, it tied Portugal, beat Austria and stunned England. Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson mans the midfield. Fun fact: With a population of 335,000, Iceland is the smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup. Coach Heimir Hallgrimsson, remains a practicing dentist on the island of Heimaey off the nation’s south coast. Predicted order of finish: Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria

Favorite: Brazil. Neymar made his long-awaited comeback from a foot injury that had sidelined him since February in a friendly against Croatia on June 3, scoring as a second-half substitute. The Paris SaintGermain star scored again a week later as a starter against Austria. Brazil has plenty of attacking options with Philippe Coutinho, Willian and Gabriel Jesus.

Favorite: Germany. The only real question mark for the defending champs is Manuel Neuer, who may be the best goalkeeper in the world but also may be a bit rusty. The 32-year-old missed nine months with a broken foot before allowing two second-half goals in a friendly loss to Austria on June 2. Neuer might not be asked to do much with a loaded squad in front of him that allowed just four goals in World Cup qualifying.

Favorite: Belgium. Blessed with as much talent and depth as anyone in the field, the Belgians just have to prove they can produce on the big stage. They have a pair of world-class playmakers in Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard. They have an elite finisher in Romelu Lukaku. If that firepower falters, they have the veteran back line of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Vincent Kompany as well as one of the world’s top goalkeepers, Thibaut Courtois.

Favorite: Colombia. With six goals in the 2014 World Cup, James Rodriguez won the Golden Boot and led Colombia to the quarterfinals — his country’s best finish ever. Still just 26, the midfielder had seven goals and 11 assists in 23 Bundesliga matches for Bayern Munich last season. He’ll get help up top from Radamel Falcao, who missed the 2014 tournament with a knee injury.

Challenger: Switzerland. According to FIFA rankings, the Swiss are the sixth best team in the world — ahead of France and Spain. Don’t be surprised if the goal of the tournament comes off the left foot of dynamic Stoke City winger Xherdan Shaqiri. But it may be the creativity of Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka in the midfield that determines how long Switzerland lasts.

Challenger: Mexico. Javier Hernandez is coming off a disappointing season at West Ham, but “Chicharito” has always produced for El Tri and will be playing in his third World Cup. For Mexico to break its streak of six straight round of 16 exits, Carlos Vela (LAFC) and Hirving Lozano need to pitch in.

Fun fact: Out of 736 players headed to the World Cup, only Rodney Wallace (Costa Rica) played at an American college. The midfielder, who won an NCAA title at Maryland in 2008, was born in San Jose, Costa Rica, and moved to Rockville at age 9.

Fun fact: Mexico’s Rafa Marquez, 39, is on the verge of becoming just the third player to see the field in five World Cups. The veteran’s status was thrown into jeopardy in August when the U.S. Treasury Department accused him of serving as a frontman for the alleged kingpin of a Mexican drug cartel.

Predicted order of finish: Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia

Predicted order of finish: Germany, Mexico, South Korea, Sweden

Challenger: England. Harry Kane scored 56 goals in all competitions for club and country in 2017, becoming the first player since 2009 to outscore Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in a calendar year. With the prolific scoring of Kane, the pace of Raheem Sterling and the creativity of Dele Alli, maybe England can get past the quarterfinals for the first time since 1990.

Challenger: Poland. It’s hard to mention Poland without focusing solely on Robert Lewandowski, the Bayern striker who has led the Bundesliga in scoring three times in the past five seasons. Poland isn’t just Lewandowski — right? — but its team won’t make a run unless the 6-foot-1 attacker is in contention for the Golden Boot.

Fun fact: After Panama qualified for its first World Cup, coach Hernan Dario Gomez selected the tournament’s oldest roster (average age: 29.6).

Fun fact: Radamel Falcao, Colombia’s all-time leading scorer, will be making his World Cup debut at age 32. The nation failed to qualify in 2010, and Falcao suffered a torn ACL just six months before the 2014 tournament.

U.S.-led bid wins 2026 rights N. American proposal overcomes fears that Trump would sink deal MISSING OUT

KIRILL KUDRYAVTSEV (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

MOSCOW The United States, Canada and Mexico were awarded the right to host the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday in Russia, returning the world’s most popular sports competition to North America for the first time since the U.S. hosted in 1994. Over the past year, while disputes between the three countries threatened to derail their effort, U.S. soccer officials formed an alliance with their neighbors that belied the tensions created by President Trump’s hardline stance on issues such as trade and immigration. The North American bid defeated Morocco in an unexpected landslide vote by members of FIFA, the sport’s governing body, 134-65. The three countries will begin making plans for an expanded, 48-team tournament at 16 venues, the majority of them in the United States. It will be the first time the World Cup is shared by three countries. “The unity of the three nations coming together was a very powerful message,” said U.S. Soccer Federation President Carlos Cordeiro, “and that was something we repeated over and over again.” The joint victory was made more striking given that the political relationship between the U.S. and its longtime allies has grown more tense than it had been in decades.

From left, officials Steve Reed (Canada), Carlos Cordeiro (USA) and Decio de Maria Serrano (Mexico) react to the win.

Trump this week withdrew the U.S. endorsement of a Group of Seven economic agreement issued at a summit hosted by Canada, then unleashed a Twitter attack on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump also recently imposed tariffs on aluminum and steel from Canada and Mexico, sparking retaliatory action. Despite those tensions, Trump has been a vocal supporter of the bid. After the vote, Trump tweeted: “The U.S., together with Mexico and Canada, just got the World Cup. Congratulations — a great deal of hard work!” Wednesday’s outcome soothed the sting of the U.S. defeat to tiny Qatar for the 2022 World Cup hosting rights eight years ago. With the World Cup on the way, the U.S. is positioned for a blockbuster set of sporting events next

decade: the 2026 World Cup, a potential 2027 women’s World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Wednesday’s triumph put to rest concerns that Trump’s politics would turn FIFA voters against the effort. What figured to be a close outcome turned out to be a rout. Under an agreement reached when the bid was formulated last year, the United States is slated to host 60 of the 80 matches, including all from the quarterfinals on. Mexico and Canada will have 10 apiece. However, FIFA has the final say on such matters, leaving the possibility of changes. The North American bid accentuated the quantity and quality of stadiums, experience staging major events and the infrastructure necessary to transport and house tens of thousands of visiting fans. They also said they would make an $11 billion profit for FIFA. STEVEN GOFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

U.S. not the only Cup regular left watching The U.S. national team’s World Cup dream ended eight months ago, when a 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago and a perfect storm of unlikely results elsewhere saw the Americans miss out on the tournament for the first time since 1986. But the U.S. isn’t the only surprise omission from the field in Russia. THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS) Italy The four-time World Cup champions finished second to Spain in their qualifying group, then fell to Sweden in a playoff for a spot in Russia — depriving legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, above, from taking a farewell lap on the global stage.

Netherlands After finishing second at the 2010 World Cup and third in 2014, the Dutch shockingly failed to secure a spot at the 2016 European Championship before ending up behind France and Sweden in their qualifying group for Russia.

Julen Lopetegui was fired as Spain’s coach Wednesday after he accepted a job leading Real Madrid next season. Spanish soccer federation president Luis Rubiales later said Fernando Hierro, left, would replace Lopetegui as coach for Spain’s match against Portugal in Sochi on Friday. Hierro, 50, is a former national team player and Real Madrid captain who was already in Russia in his capacity as the federation’s sports director. (AP)

Rosslyn viewing parties

MELINA MARA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Central Place Plaza, 1800 N. Lynn St., Arlington

The World Cup, which begins Thursday, is not a tournament you should watch at home: It’s an experience. Games in Russia will begin in the early morning and afternoon here. And even though the U.S. didn’t qualify, there are still several pop-up bars and viewing parties around town. FRITZ HAHN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

During the 2014 World Cup, large crowds of soccer fans gathered to watch matches on an outdoor screen at Washington’s Freedom Plaza.

The Rosslyn Business Improvement District and D.C. United have joined forces to show matches on a large screen in the Central Place Plaza, with foosball tables and a bar serving wine and beer. The only confirmed events are Portugal vs. Spain (Friday, 2 p.m.) and the World Cup Final (July 15, 11 a.m.), but more may be added.

England vs. Belgium at Wunder Garten 1101 First St. NE

The embassies of Belgium and the United Kingdom aren’t opening their doors to outsiders when England and Belgium face off on June 28, but they are joining forces

to host a public viewing party at the Wunder Garten beer garden in NoMa. Expect big screens, lawn games, food trucks and British and Belgian beers on tap, beginning at 2 p.m. The venue will screen matches throughout the tournament, with happy hour prices.

Field House DC 1901 First St. SW

Imagine a soccer-themed version of Navy Yard’s the Bullpen taking over a parking lot in the shadow of D.C. United’s soon-to-open Audi Field. Steuart Martens, who runs the annual Taste of D.C. festival, has big

plans for the outdoor space before United even moves in: a giant screen showing World Cup matches; beer-garden-style tables; bars pouring beer, sangria and mixed drinks; and games including foosball and “soccer darts,” which involves kicking balls at Velcro targets.

The shuttered Prospect sports bar is becoming a soccer bar for the World Cup. This pop-up will open every day at 8 a.m. with frosé, beers, wines and World Cup-inspired burgers from Lucky Buns chef Alex McCoy. Happy hour begins daily at 4 p.m., with replays of the day’s matches.

“The Remains,” now running at Studio Theatre, is a very special way for artistic director David Muse to cap off his eighth season with the company. Not only is he directing the play, but he’s also reuniting with actor Maulik Pancholy (TV’s “30 Rock,” “Weeds”), his old classmate at the Yale School of Drama. “At the drama school, [he] acted in more of my plays than any other actor,” says Muse, 44. In “The Remains” (through June 24, $52-$97), Pancholy and Glenn Fitzgerald star as a couple who, 10 years after becoming the first samesex couple legally married in Massachusetts, prepare to tell their families they’re divorcing. As much as Muse loves his life in the theater, he’s planning his own separation on his dream day. “That’s for the other six days of the week,” he says. This day “is much more about eating and drinking.” My days off generally begin with some kind of bike ride. I thought, “How can I make this one more special-feeling?” So the fantasy I cooked up is: A shuttle picks me up in the morning, drives me and my bike out to Marshall, Va., where there’s some really great riding. And in the

shuttle, they already have for me a macchiato from Blue Bottle Coffee and a croissant from Seylou Bakery and an omelet from Le Diplomate. Then we’d take a ride in horse country for two or three hours in the morning. And on the way back, my guy who gives me massages could be in the shuttle.

I’m a little embarrassed to say that since it was renovated, I have not been to the east wing of the National Gallery of Art. Going to museums in general is one of those things I’m always promising myself to do more of, and not finding as much time as I want to to do it. I’ll see all kinds of things, but I am drawn to modern art, and of course that’s what the east wing is all about. I tried to pick a place [for dinner], but then I thought, “Wouldn’t it be more fun to do a progressive dinner and do courses at a handful of places that I love very much?” So that’s what I dreamed up: It’s a cocktail at Columbia Room. One appetizer at The Red Hen. A second appetizer at Elle, in Mount Pleasant, because my wife and I just bought a place up there, so we’re gearing up to get into the Mount Pleasant vibe. We’re going to have our main courses at Komi, because it’s my favorite restaurant in Washington. It’s probably going to be some giant rack of lamb. And then we’re gonna have dessert at Dolcezza. At Dolcezza, it’s hard for me not to get salted caramel [gelato], but I try to get something different every time. (AS TOLD TO LORI McCUE/FOR EXPRESS)

BACK IN THEIR HEYDAY, The Temptations moved constantly and effortlessly, delivering their tunes in a suave style that’s still emulated

by singing groups today. Behind the choreographed steps of the Motown hit-makers, though, lurked individual struggles and the

Center for a five-week run that marks the show’s East Coast premiere. Coordinating all the moves is choreographer Sergio Trujillo, whose résumé includes such pop music Broadway treats as “Jersey Boys,” “Memphis,” “On Your Feet!” and the current “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.” Trujillo says “Ain’t Too Proud,” like The Temptations themselves, stands out from the rest.

“Out of all the autobiographical shows I’ve done based on groups, for me I felt like this was the one Trujillo that I had a big responsibility to make sure that I paid true homage,” Trujillo says. “They were smooth and refined, but there was so much soul to them.”

The show sticks to the classics “Ain’t Too Proud” concentrates on the “Classic Five” era of The Temptations — featuring David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams from 1964 to 1968 — as well as a couple of the members who joined in the ’70s. The musical could only tackle so much, Trujillo says. “There were 24 different members,” he says. Plus, The Temptations’ story isn’t finished: The group released a new album, “All the

Time,” last month. Otis Williams, 76, is the only original member who remains in the act.

Every song tells a story Each number gets a unique treatment in “Ain’t Too Proud,” with the dance moves adapting to each era “the same way the clothing changes in our show,” Trujillo says. The staging of

“My Girl” retains some of the corny moves from the group’s original performances. “I Can’t Get Next to You” “is thrilling and exciting,” he says. “ ‘Get Ready’ just grabs you. ‘Cloud Nine’ is extraordinary.” The 1964 classic “The Way You Do the Things You Do” comes “closest to what the Temptations were,” Trujillo says.

“I’ve taken the way that they move as inspiration, but created my own trademark choreography,” Trujillo says. “That’s not to say that I’m trying to put hiphop into the show. But I really have to remember that we have evolved, dance has evolved, music has evolved. I have to think: If I were the choreographer for The Temptations, what would I do with them today?”

The boardwalk “is pure sensory overload,” says Ben Rose, director of marketing and public relations with the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority. What to know before you go: The boardwalk in Atlantic City, N.J. — the first in the U.S. — opened in 1870 and is well-known as the birthplace and home of the Miss America competition. A century ago, the most fashionable way to travel the boardwalk was in wickerbasket rolling chairs, which operators pushed down the 4-mile-long boardwalk. Visitors can relive the old days by hopping in one of the three-wheeled vehicles that operate today. Though Atlantic City has a seen-better-days feel in spots, events like pro boxing matches help draw crowds, and the boardwalk’s fronted with a slew of casinos, if that’s your thing.

What to know before you go: The nearly 3-mile boardwalk in Virginia Beach, Va., is unique in two ways: It’s made of concrete, not wood, and there’s a bike path alongside it that’s open to riders all day. (Most boardwalks restrict or ban bikes.) There are four oceanfront stages with frequent concerts, and plenty of nautical sculptures to admire and/or pose next to. King Neptune is practically a mandatory photo op — a 34-foot-tall, 12-ton bronze statue of the mythological god clutching a trident.

Now I want to tell you about a museum that’s tough to visit but absolutely jam-packed with fascinating stuff: the National Museum of the United States Navy. Though the NMUSN is free and open to the public, it’s on the Washington Navy Yard — a military base that intentionally deters casual visitors. Over the years, tightened security has made it more difficult for nonmilitary folks to go inside. It’s not impossible, just intimidating — the “Warning, This Property Patrolled by Police Dog Teams” signs and stern men with giant guns certainly gave me pause. But all you need is a driver’s license and a felony-free record, and you can enter the base at the visitors gate at 11th and O streets SE, and then just walk yourself to the museum. (See box for details.) I recommend visiting the NMUSN if only for the opportunity to see what’s inside the Navy Yard’s foreboding brick walls. On a recent visit, I caught a glimpse of the chief of naval operations’ beautiful Georgian house, heard a Navy band practicing and wandered around a field strewn with interesting artifacts, including the top of a World War II submarine. It was a weekday, so I saw only a handful of people walking around — mostly office workers out for an early lunch — and the museum was practically deserted. I thought

I was totally alone until, about an hour into my visit, two children appeared out of nowhere and trampled over my feet. “Sorry!” their mom called out to me. The three of them were there for a ceremony of some kind, and the kids were having a great time climbing enormous WWII anti-aircraft artillery, an activity that is allowed — encouraged, even — according to signs on the guns. The NMUSN has a wonderfully old-fashioned approach to interactivity. In addition to the climbable artillery, there’s a replica battleship bridge with turning wheels and cranking cranks, and two working submarine periscopes, one of which was trained on an overturned boat in the Anacostia. “We think it was abandoned by a drug dealer during a police chase,” a museum staff member said of the boat. “It’s been there since February.” I had a lot of questions for her, because — while this Navy museum has tons of amazing stuff on display — the signage is a bit lacking. For instance, I couldn’t find any information on the strange orange glider hanging in the museum’s World War II gallery. “That’s a kamikaze training airplane,” the staff member told me, adding, “Yes, there was a training program to become a kamikaze pilot.” She also explained a Ushaped machine gun on display near some WWII anti-aircraft artillery. “It’s from a Japanese torpedo plane that was shot down” by an American ship, she said. “It crashed into the ship and got bent around one of the ship’s guns.” The American artillery

Going yard: Wait till you see what’s inside those walls

Pro tip: Gaining admission takes a bit of effort The National Museum of the United States Navy is easy to get into — just walk right in Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., or Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. But there’s a catch: First, you have to get through the gates at the Washington Navy Yard. This is no problem if you’re a military member, employee or contractor with a CAC (Common Access Card) — just swipe yourself in at any of the four gates around the base. Everyone else must go through the Visitor Control Center (VCC) at 11th and O streets SE and pass a quick background check. At the VCC, they’ll check your driver’s license and ask you to fill out a two-page form. The process took me about 20 minutes. Once you pass, you’ll be fingerprinted and photographed, handed a temporary pass and sent on your way. (Almost everyone passes except for convicted felons, staff say.) There’s one more catch: If you want to visit on a Saturday, you must submit your access request two weeks in advance, because the VCC is open only on weekdays. To arrange a weekend visit, call 202-685-0589. S.D.

continued to work even after the Japanese airplane crashed into it and set it on fire, she added with pride. Admiration for Navy engineering is evident throughout this museum, and that point is driven home by its largest

artifact: the bathyscaphe Trieste, a 50-foot-long deep-water research vessel that consists of a huge gasoline tank with a claustrophobic compartment for riders stuck to the bottom. Nearby, I found a Navy submariner giving an ad hoc tour to

his wife. The Trieste, he said, touched down at the deepest part of the ocean — about 35,800 feet beneath the surface — in 1960. “They literally just went down there, peeked out of the window, saw some fish no one had ever seen before, and went right back up,” the submariner said. “No one ever went again until James Cameron in 2012.” I spent most of my time in the World War II gallery, but sections devoted to other conflicts were equally fascinating. The Cold War gallery, for instance, includes a Viet Cong water mine, a landing vehicle from the Korean War and an enormous nuclear missile (emptied of its payload, I assume) that was toted around by American submarines at the height of America’s stalemate with the former USSR. Going backward in history, I found the museum’s most impressive artifact in its Revolutionary War section. There, alongside all sorts of old swords, guns and cannons, is the original fighting deck from the USS Constitution, a high perch for sailors to stand on while shooting their muskets at enemy ships. This is illustrated by two dusty mannequins that appear to be historic artifacts themselves — I’d guess they date to about 1963, when the NMUSN opened. Base security was so relaxed in the museum’s early years, entire busloads of tourists regularly stopped by. These days, the museum mostly seems to host school groups and military ceremonies. That’s too bad, because the NMUSN is full of fascinating artifacts and it’s quiet, which is a nice contrast to the crowded American history museums of the Mall. Still, I hope to see bigger crowds there in the future. If the Navy Yard’s high walls cause us to forget that this excellent museum exists, it might just disappear forever. weekendpass Q&A | DOM FLEMONS

The banjo’s past is also his future When you hear a banjo, what images come to mind? Maybe an old white guy plucking a tune on a sagging porch, or a river rapids trip that’s about to go terribly wrong? Those are valid associations, but there’s a lot more to the instrument, says Silver Spring-based musician Dom Flemons. In his performance at the 12th annual Mike Seeger Commemorative Old Time Banjo Festival at The Birchmere

Old-timey meets new

Dom Flemons first picked up the banjo in his hometown of Phoenix. His style blends country, jazz and blues.

The 12th annual Mike Seeger Commemorative Old Time Banjo Festival isn’t just a trip down memory lane. The event features a variety of innovative folk musicians. Dom Flemons will perform new songs he’s written about black cowboys and other forgotten figures of the American West. The lineup also includes Grammy winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, who infuse familiar folk arrangements with progressive messages, and fatherson duo Ken and Brad Kolodner, who push the technical boundaries of the banjo and hammer dulcimer with inventive virtuosity. S.D.

on Sunday, Flemons will trace the history of the banjo from its Afro-Caribbean roots to its role in the development of quintessentially American genres including folk, bluegrass, jazz, ragtime and beyond. Flemons, formerly of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, gave us a glimpse into this humble instrument’s fascinating past and potential future. SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS)

You know, the banjo is an African-derived instrument. It started as a gourd-based instrument that was brought over back in slavery days, and it was something enslaved Africans had as a part of their culture. And then it developed from these varied instruments from across the continent into the banjo as we know it. So the banjo is one of the few instruments indigenous to the United States.

Why did African-American musicians abandon the banjo at some point? I think it was the same thing that moved people away from string-band music. During the Great Migration [which began around 1916], people didn’t want to be associated with the old sharecropping system. The banjo represented a community in the South that was born out of slavery, and so if you’re someone who has just been emancipated and you move away from that old culture, the banjo is left behind with it. African-Americans moved to the North and West, from rural places to cities, and music went towards jazz, blues, spirituals and then, later, gospel music. The guitar ended up becoming the instrument for the blues, and the banjo was left behind.

So is that how the banjo

ended up becoming almost a musical cue for backwoods racism? One of the best-known banjo tracks is “Dueling Banjos.” It was actually made by two studio musicians — very refined players who were playing these very sophisticated folk arrangements. Ten years later, their music got unceremoniously repackaged as the soundtrack to “Deliverance,” which cemented its association with some of the darkest parts of Appalachian and rural white culture.

mission as a musician. That was something I found was very important — adding African-American history back into the early history of American music. Now young AfricanAmerican musicians are listening to old-time music and folk music and saying, “Oh, I think that’s cool. Is there anyone that looks like me represented within this music?” And now they have kind of a precedent within which to develop their own journey.

Musically, what makes the banjo special? It has the elements of a melody instrument and it has the head of a drum. You can roll through chords and create these very sophisticated rhythms and play the melodic line and a countermelody, all at the same time. That’s what’s always drawn me to this instrument — it can do so many things all at once. It can fit any type of music and it can really go anywhere.

How did you end up playing banjo? Being from Phoenix, Ariz., I found one in an old music shop. I had been playing the guitar at that point, and I ended up developing a style of banjo playing that combines aspects of country, blues guitar, Dixieland jazz as well as old-time banjo music.

I’m amazed that such a simple instrument can have so much historical baggage. TIMOTHY DUFFY

You don’t generally see a lot of black banjo players.

“Take the things from the past that you want, and take that with you into the present, into the future. The banjo, to me, is the physical manifestation of that idea.”

Then I came to North Carolina for the Black Banjo Gathering of 2005, and I learned about the very deep history of the banjo. That’s where [Carolina Chocolate Drops] began coming together, and that was something I found very important from the get-go: to be young, educated, AfricanAmerican performers that were adding our voices to the general conversation about the banjo.

That’s the thing that makes the banjo so important! In its original context, the banjo had to sound African, but it couldn’t simply reference backwards, it had to move forward. It had to produce music that was new and fresh. It reminds me of a proverb from the Gold Coast of Africa, “sankofa,” and it means, “Go back and fetch it.” Take the things from the past that you want, and take that with you into the present, into the future. The banjo, to me, is the physical manifestation of that idea.

It sounds like education has always been a big part of your

‘McKellen: Playing the Part’ Everyone knows (or should know) that Ian McKellen’s career did not start with Magneto. Or Gandalf. Or even “Gods and Monsters,” which you should totally see because it’s really good. Besides just being a good actor, Sir Ian is considered one of the greatest performers of Shakespeare in modern times — if not of all time — and his real life is just as theatrical. Built upon a 14-hour interview, the documentary “McKellen: Playing the Part” chronicles his upbringing, his work on stage and screen, and his role as an activist for the LGBT community. Landmark E Street Cinema, 555 11th St. NW; Landmark Bethesda Row Cinema, 7235 Woodmont Ave., Bethesda; Tue., 7 p.m., $15. Folger Theatre, 201 E. Capitol St. SE; June 23, 5 p.m., $20.

‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ The stage adaptation of Mark Haddon’s 2003 mystery novel follows Christopher, a 15-year-old boy with autism, as he tries to figure out who killed his neighbor’s dog. A performance of the play, filmed live at the National Theatre in London, is screening at the Angelika. The play a dizzying, moving experience that uses lights, sound and movement in innovative ways to help the audience experience some of what happens in Christopher’s mind. Be sure to stay past the bows — you’ll find the stage equivalent of a Marvel post-credits scene. Angelika Film Center, 2911 District Ave., Fairfax; Thu., 7 p.m., June 20, 2 p.m., $20.

‘True Grit’ It might be a little cliche to tell you to get your dad tickets to one of the manliest films in history for Father’s Day, but it’s still better than another tie. The 1969 original “True Grit” stars John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn, a U.S. marshal hired by a teenage girl to hunt down the man who killed her father. Unfortunately for him, she tags along, so now he has to put up with harsh terrain, bad guys AND a teenager. At Alamo’s screening, the theater will also be offering whiskey-based cocktails, so maybe get Dad an Uber as well. Stephen Stills & Judy Collins

SAT 6/16

Fifty years ago, singer-songwriter Stephen Stills met singer-songwriter Judy Collins, known for her piercing ocean blue eyes. Their tumultuous love affair would later be immortalized by Stills with his composition “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” performed by Crosby, Stills & Nash on their landmark debut. Both artists would go on to shape modern music with visionary approaches, but Stills and Collins’ short fiery union remains a transformative era for the two artists.

America’s teacher: I learned English from Mr. Rogers I didn’t speak English until sometime after my fourth birthday. I was born in the United States, and my parents, who had immigrated from Iran, wanted me to know the languages of both my birth country and theirs. But years before I came into the picture, a teacher cautioned my mom against teaching English to my older brother. He’ll pick up on your accent and grammar tics, went the reasoning, and he’ll learn English in school, from friends, from TV. And he did. Many non-English speakers pick up the language through television. Thank goodness for “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” “I wanted you to watch something good,” my mom explains now. “Something safe for you.” She’d watch along with me at home, seeing how he’d cover the basics of counting and the alphabet. And after my dad opened his first restaurant — an American Dream kind of risk — the Rogers lessons continued. As my parents prepared food in the restaurant kitchen, I sat a few feet away in the “office” and watched PBS on a small, wooden-paneled TV set. One of the principles behind

I’m writing these words thanks in part to Mr. Rogers. He taught me English. As a little girl sitting in the backroom of my parents’ fledgling restaurant, I was mesmerized by this cardiganwearing man on TV who lovingly opened a bright new world to my young mind. Many adults consider Fred Rogers to be one of their first teachers. Fewer know about the level of intention Rogers brought to his shows. Oscar winner Morgan Neville’s recently released documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” reveals the complexities of this singular figure in American popular culture: an ordained minister turned television star who shunned wacky antics in favor of simple sets and profound messages. Rogers’ conviction in the power that television wielded motivated his life’s work. “What we see and hear on the screen is part of who we become,” he says in the documentary. That was true for countless children who watched him and have their own Mr. Rogers stories, including me.

The life and influence of TV personality Fred Rogers is the subject of the recently released documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

Rogers’ approach, I learned from “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” is that the emotional lives of children are every bit as complex and valid as those of adults. Thinking back, there’s no way I could have understood most of what Rogers said. But I don’t remember ever feeling confused by him. My young mind acted like a sponge, soaking up all of his words. After I enrolled in school, it took just a few weeks for me to fluently speak the language that would come to

define the rest of my life. At times during his career, Rogers wondered whether his approach and message that everyone is worthy could stand a chance against the increasing violence and chaos that flooded television. It’s a simple lesson, but I try to remember it in my own work. Yes, there’s so much bad out there. But it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to bring some good. Follow Elahe Izadi on Twitter @ElaheIzadi

Variety: VH1 renews “RuPaul’s Drag Race”

FILM Andre Leon Talley has always cut a striking figure, draping his 6-foot-6 frame with silk caftans, crocodile coats and abundant fur. The clothes are armor: He used them to “navigate through these chiffon trenches,” Talley says. “Fashion is a cruel world. The clothes I put on are very deliberate.” The subject of the recently released documentary “The Gospel According to Andre,” Talley didn’t discuss race for much of his career. The former editor-at-large at Vogue implied that he couldn’t engage because he didn’t give it much thought. But in the film Talley unburdens himself. He’s in the photo archives at Vogue when he recalls how a French publicist referred to him: “Queen Kong.” “Race does define me,” Talley says. “It feels more relevant now to bring it to the forefront.” Eboni Marshall Turman, an assistant professor at Yale Divinity School, poses the question in the film of what it means be so singular in fashion — to be, as a 1994 New Yorker profile put it, “The Only One.” While Talley is no longer “the only one,” he has yet to become one of many. “The industry has shifted in diversity, but not necessarily in terms of black people — we have models that are Muslim, transgender,” he says. “This took all these years. It’s the beginning of a defining moment.” ROBIN GIVHAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Tiffany Haddish seemingly confirmed that Sanaa Lathan was the actress who allegedly bit Beyonce at a December party. Rumored to be the culprit after Haddish had claimed that an unnamed actress bit the superstar, Lathan tweeted in March, “Under no circumstances did I bite Beyonce and if I did it would’ve been a love bite.” Asked to identify the guilty party for a Wednesday story in The Hollywood Reporter, Haddish smiled at the mention of Lathan’s name. “Someone was saying, like, ‘Oh my God, you should keep your mouth shut ‘cause now you’re never gonna be invited to parties,’ ” Haddish said. “But I got invited to way more parties after that.” (EXPRESS)
