5 U.S. Troops Killed in Airstrike Kabul, Afghanistan Five Americans with a special operations unit were killed by a U.S. airstrike called in to help them after they were ambushed by the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, in one of the deadliest friendly fire incidents in nearly 14 years of war, officials said Tuesday.

The deaths were a reminder that the conflict is nowhere near over for some U.S. troops, who will keep fighting for at least two more years.

One of the troops killed was identified as Aaron Toppen, 19, of Mokena, Ill., who had deployed to Afghanistan in March, a month after his father died. His family was suffering a ‘double hit’ of grief, his sister said.

Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said the five American troops were killed Monday during a security operation in southern Afghanistan. “Investigators are looking into the likelihood that friendly fire was the cause,” Kirby said.

Calif. Court: Tenure for Teachers Not Constitutional Los Angeles A judge struck down tenure and other job protections for California’s public school teachers as unconstitutional Tuesday, saying such laws harm students — especially poor and minority ones — by saddling them with bad teachers who are almost impossible to fire.

In a landmark decision that could influence tenure across the country, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rolf Treu cited the historic case of Brown v. Board of Education in ruling that students have a right to equal education.

Siding with the nine students who brought the lawsuit, he ruled that California’s laws on hiring and firing in schools have resulted in “a significant number of grossly ineffective teachers” in California classrooms. He agreed, too, that a disproportionate number of these teachers are in schools that have mostly minority and poor students.

Could D.C. Be the Host of the 2024 Olympics?

Washington The bid to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Washington has been one of the more stealth lobbying campaigns based in the nation’s capital these past months.

In deliberately low-key style, as U.S. Olympic Committee officials have directed, a group of the region’s well-connected business leaders has been trying to convince the organization to name D.C. as the country’s nominee to host the 2024 Games.

D.C. has been rejected before in the U.S. Olympic Committee’s domestic selection process, passed over in favor of New York in pursuit of the 2012 Summer Games, which went to London. The USOC then put forward Chicago as its candidate to host the 2016 Games. But that bid was the first one rejected by the IOC in the 2009 voting, in what amounted to a public humiliation, despite a personal pitch from President Barack Obama. Rio de Janeiro emerged as the winner, and its lack of readiness two years out has been cause for alarm. After sitting out the 2020 bidding process, USOC officials feel the time is right to try again. Washington is among six cities believed to be in the running. The others: Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles (host of the 1932 and 1984 Olympics), San Diego and San Francisco. The mayors of New York and Philadelphia announced last month that their cities were bowing out.

On Tuesday, the USOC’s board of directors met to pare that list to two or three cities. Chairman Larry Probst said the USOC was contacting cities that had expressed interest and would announce the finalists within the next 10 days, MassLive.com reported.

The USOC hopes to choose the city to nominate by the end of the year. That would give the USOC and city leaders roughly nine months to bolster the bid before formally submitting it to the International Olympic Committee in September 2015. The IOC is expected to name the 2024 host in 2017, providing the customary seven-year window for preparation.

Hillary Clinton isn’t alone in employing ghostwriters to express her thoughts Washington

“Some very capable people want books written but don’t have the time or the expertise to do it.”

Hillary Rodham Clinton has written a new book. Except maybe she hasn’t. It all depends on what the definition of “written” is.

The former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state had some help on her new memoir, “Hard Choices.” Clinton employed a phalanx of associates in producing the volume, which was released Tuesday.

But don’t expect to hear much about Clinton’s “book team,” as she calls those who helped her write the book, which carries her name alone on its cover. Clinton’s acknowledgment of her three-man team — Dan Schwerin, a former Senate and State Department aide to Clinton; Ethan Gelber, another State Department aide; and Ted Widmer, a Clinton adviser and Brown University historian — appears in just a few sentences on Page 597 of the 635-page book. Their exact contributions, however, aren’t spelled out.

Such is the lot of the ghostwriter.

Actually, many ghostwriters get even less credit. The ghost behind Clinton’s 1996 best-seller, “It Takes a Village,” wasn’t credited at all.

That prompted complaints from Barbara Feinman Todd, a Georgetown University lecturer and writer who reportedly labored for seven months on the book.

Given how frequently politicians use ghostwriters to churn out their hagiographic campaign books, Feinman Todd’s complaint implicitly raised a question: Is it

Behind the Scenes of the Best-Sellers All three of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s memoirs — including her latest, “Hard Choices” — have been written with the help of others, if not by others. But she’s not alone. Here are some other famous ghostwriters behind the best-sellers:

‘Profiles in Courage’ In 1957, then-Sen. John F. Kennedy won the Pulitzer Prize for the best-selling “Profiles in Courage,” a collection of stories about intrepid Americans throughout history. But questions about Kennedy’s authorship lingered for decades. In 2008, Ted Sorensen, Kennedy’s longtime aide and speechwriter, set the record straight in his autobiography, “Counselor: A Life at the Edge of History.” Sorensen wrote that he “did a first draft of most chapters” of “Profiles” and “helped choose the words of many of its sentences.”

‘The Autobiography of Malcolm X’ While its title suggests otherwise, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” was a collaboration between the civil rights activist and journalist Alex Haley, who later wrote “Roots.” Although the story was Malcolm’s, Haley was the researcher, organizer and author of the classic book. Under contractual agreement, however, Haley received an “as told to” cover credit on most, but not all, editions.

‘Lean In’ Journalist and TV writer Nell Scovell gets somewhat higher-profile treatment from Sheryl Sandberg, on “Lean In,” the best-selling manifesto about women in the workplace. In her acknowledgments, Sandberg calls Scovell her “writing partner.”

And Scovell’s name appears on the title page of “Lean In” alongside Sandberg’s (“Sheryl Sandberg with Nell Scovell”). While Scovell is often described in profiles as the co-author of the book, her name is absent from its cover, which credits only Sandberg.

Ghostwriters have been channeling the thoughts of politicians, business executives, celebrities and just plain folk with little or no credit since the days of Cyrano de Bergerac, the 17th-century dramatist who, as a fictionalized character, anonymously wrote poetry to help another woo his beloved Roxane.

Using ghosts to produce selfserving political books is so common that the HBO sitcom “Veep” satirized it. The program’s lead character, the vice president (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), can barely recognize anything mentioned in her book, which was written by a campaign aide and which she hasn’t read.

Since most ghostwriters sign nondisclosure agreements that prohibit them from revealing the extent of their involvement, it’s hard to know whether the putative author had assistance or even did any work. Given such secrecy, the author credits on many books are rarely a guide to who did the work.

But many ghostwriters see no ethical issue in permitting a client to take credit for work produced anonymously by someone else.

“A client who hires a ghostwriter is still the author of their book,” says Kevin Anderson, who runs a ghostwriting firm in New York.

“A ghostwriter is an interpreter and a translator, not an author.”

Zimmerman’s Not Out of Place So far, the veteran’s transition to outfield has gone smoothly The Nationals’ Denard Span, one of the best defensive center fielders in the league, has played with plenty of poor outfielders in his career.

Without naming names, Span said there were times in Minnesota when he essentially had to play two-thirds of the outfield to ensure nothing horrible would go wrong.

Sometimes it was a designated hitter playing beside him, or perhaps a first baseman.

This month, in Washington, Span has seen another infielder transition to his right. Ryan Zimmerman, longtime third baseman for the Nationals, returned from a thumb injury and has resumed defensive duties in left field. So far, Span’s not worried about Zimmerman out there.

“I’ve played with some guys who had no business being in the outfield,” Span said. “I don’t think that’s going to be the case here.”

Heading into Tuesday’s contest against the Giants, Zimmerman had a perfect fielding percentage in left field. He recorded 10 putouts in seven games. Throwing the ball back to the infield isn’t wearing on his shoulder the way

throwing from third base to first did over the past year and a half.

All in all, the experiment with Zimmerman in the outfield appears to be working.

Utility player Kevin Frandsen knows all about the transition

from infield to outfield, having to play either when called upon off the bench. He said the main thing Zimmerman has to do is to keep himself busy, as there is a lot more to worry about in the infield.

“Sometimes I felt like the little kid out there picking flowers,” Frandsen said.

The key, he added, is to stay on top of all of the responsibilities as an outfielder. He said it’s important to keep moving and stay engaged.

“You’re in the big leagues,” Frandsen said. “You find a way to make sure you’re on top of every pitch.”

Zimmerman’s ability to play left field gives the Nationals options, and playing first base remains a possibility for the 29-year-old, too.

“Very rarely do people get to play the same position their whole career,” Zimmerman said. “I’m lucky enough to be able to have played as long as I have so far.

Hoyas and Orange to Play in ’15 College Basketball The Georgetown-Syracuse basketball rivalry is back.

The schools announced Tuesday they’ve reached agreement on a four-year, home-and-home series starting in 2015.

Georgetow n w ill host t he Orange at Verizon Center during the 2015-16 and 2017-18 seasons, and the Hoyas will visit the Carrier Dome in 2016-17 and 2018-19.

Specific dates have not been set.

The first game of the renewal will be the first regular-season matchup between the teams since the Hoyas beat the Orange 61-39 at Verizon Center to clinch the 201213 Big East regular-season title.

The rivals went their separate ways when Syracuse joined the ACC last summer. The teams have met 90 times, with Syracuse leading the series 49-41.

Former Pitcher Bob Welch Dies Baseball Bob Welch, the 1990 AL Cy Young Award winner of the Oakland Athletics and the last major leaguer to win at least 25 games in a season, has died. He was 57.

He died Monday night in Seal Beach, Calif., of unknown causes, the team said Tuesday.

Welch was a prominent member of the Oakland teams that won three straight AL championships from 1988 to 1990, including the 1989 club that swept the San Francisco Giants in the earthquake-interrupted World Series. He won the Cy Young Award after going 27-6 with a 2.95 ERA. ANTONIO GONZ ALEZ (AP)

Phil Mickelson spent five hours in the stifling heat Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 2 with a lot on his mind.

He was trying to sharpen his game, figure out what it will take to finally win a U.S. Open and make enough putts with his claw grip to avoid losing to a pair of players whose combined age is younger than him.

This major has a reputation as the toughest test in golf. It’s every bit of that for Mickelson.

“I really believe that this week is testing a player’s entire game,” Mickelson said. “Because it forces you to make good decisions, to choose the right club off the tee, hit solid iron shots into the green

and utilize your short game to save strokes. It’s just a wonderful test … the best test I’ve seen to identify the best player.”

His definition of Pinehurst and its rugged, natural look would seem to require every ounce of concentration.

And that could be his biggest challenge.

On the golf course, Mickelson is trying to ignore the enormous expectations on him this week. He holds the worst kind of U.S. Open record with six runner-up finishes. He needs this major to complete

the career Grand Slam.

Off the course, Mickelson has made headlines that threaten his clean image. He was linked two weeks ago to an insider trading investigation involving activist investor Carl Icahn and a Las Vegas gambler over some timely trades of Clorox stock three years ago.

FBI agents even came to the golf course to try to interview Mickelson.

He referred them to his attorney, said he had done “absolutely nothing wrong” and that “I’m not going to walk around any other way.”

Even though he hasn’t won in nearly a year, and has dropped to No. 11 in the world ranking, he is the center of attention in the sand hills of North Carolina.

A Real-Life Comedian In ‘Obvious Child,’ Jenny Slate enters new territory: playing a normal person

who we do not relate to at all, who doesn’t even have any good jokes, whose life is kind of boring.

JS: She’s quirky because she, like, wears glasses or she trips. Or her dress is tucked into her pantyhose.

GR: We really wanted to bring a fantastically funny leading lady to the surface and somebody who you could not just laugh with, but also cry with and really relate to.

Film Jenny Slate, 32, is used to playing characters best described as The Worst, like ditzy, self-centered publicist Pretty Liz on “Kroll Show” or Jean-Ralphio’s obnoxious twin Mona-Lisa on “Parks and Recreation.” So it’s a welcome surprise to see Slate (infamous for dropping an F-bomb during her first “Saturday Night Live”) playing an Actual Human Being in “Obvious Child.” In the new movie, written and directed by Gillian Robespierre, 35, Slate stars as Donna Stern, a recently dumped, struggling standup comedian in Brooklyn. After the most self-destructive comedy set of her career, she has a one-night-stand that she plans to put behind her — until she discovers she’s pregnant.

What follows is a relentlessly hilarious, poignant and refreshingly real romantic comedy about getting an abortion. Express sat down with Slate and Robespierre to discuss the film ahead of Friday’s release.

There’s something so natural about the film, especially the stand-up performances. Were Donna’s sets scripted?

Gillian Robespierre: It was scripted and then workshopped together. Jenny’s an amazing stand-up comedian, I am not one. I’m just a fan of comedy and also a really big fan of Jenny’s voice on stage, which is very confessional, honest and earnest. It’s a really cool style and Jenny was grateful enough to lend us that style for Donna. But Jenny and Donna are very different.

When Donna decides to get an abortion, there’s no stigma surrounding it. Was it important to make sure it wasn’t a negative experience?

GR: We didn’t want a scene where

she’s deliberating and crying. She’s still feeling a lot of things that are not easy emotions but she’s just not ready and she knows she’s not. We wanted to show something where people in her life weren’t judging her, where she wasn’t judging herself, and also show a very safe, positive experience in the health center. That’s why we collaborated with Planned Parenthood.

It helps that the film is funny. Even the gross-out humor is smart.

JS: Thank you. We’re experts at that.

Jenny Slate: Yeah, I understand

boundaries. I think that’s an important part of having a strong voice onstage: to be careful with it, to use it in the right way, and Donna doesn’t really know how to do that at the start. She’s just flooring it.

It was refreshing to see you playing a relatable, normal person.

JS: Yeah, the same from my point of view. I have never done anything like this before.

Did you fear being typecast?

JS: Yeah. I was just really, really

dying to play a normal woman and

I think it happens sometimes when you do comedy, that people think of you as the person who makes that face and does this voice. I’m lucky that I’ve had an array of really large characters and was able to have fun and do those, but then develop a taste and a real hunger for something natural.

Most of the notes I took while watching the film were just jokes that came out of Donna’s mouth.

GR: We wanted to make a romantic comedy with an actually funny leading lady. So many romantic comedies have the quirky lady

When she’s feeling very low, Donna climbs into a cardboard box, which I think we can all relate to.

JS: I was delighted when I read that box scene. I was like, “I can’t wait until we do the box!”

GR: Jenny got injured.

JS: I did, I hurt myself. When I jumped out of the box, I would slam my arms down on the side of the box and I had these really, really big bruises. They tried to cover them up because they were gross, purple bruises but you can see one of them on my arm. War wounds.

As the owner of Flint Hill Farm, she oversees 28 acres of farmland with six acres for livestock including chickens, cows, horses, goats and a potbelly pig. In the middle of it all is a rustic three-bedroom farmhouse built in 1850 (in which Fields resides) where you can rent the Equine Room, which sleeps two, or the Loom Room, which sleeps up to four and has a balcony overlooking the property.

A judge approved a settlement between Halle Berry and her ex-boyfriend over child support for their 6-year-old daughter. Berry must pay Gabriel Aubry $16,000 a month or nearly $200,000 a year to support their daughter. The order also calls for Berry to pay Aubry $300,000 to his attorneys to cover custody-dispute costs.
