His many payments to her included a $30,000 Rolex she claimed would cleanse the sins of his past. (AP)

When a curious brown bear showed up at an Anchorage, Alaska, farm, the cows in a small yak herd there defiantly surrounded the calves. But not the lone bull, Stormy. He sprinted away. Stormy ran through Eagle Peaks Farm, hopped the fence and kept going. The bull has broken loose two other times and earned the nickname “Wimpy” for his last escape. He was coaxed back into the pen with the help of a cow. (AP)

Using a stand mixer, he whipped the ingredients together until it had achieved a mousse-like texture. Then the fun. With a spatula, he dolloped mounds of the gelato caldo into a metal pan. He drizzled on pistachio cream and melted chocolate, followed by a sprinkle of finely chopped pistachios. Another layer went on the same way. To further gild the lily,

he covered the top in chocolatedipped profiteroles that had been filled with more gelato caldo. After a 20-minute rest in the minus-40-degree blast freezer, the finished dessert was ready to serve. Dellaccio hopes to add a few more flavors to the gelato caldo rotation, such as chocolate and coffee-chocolate. He’ll probably experiment with building the mounds even higher and decorating them more elaborately, too. BECKY KRYSTAL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FOOD “Hot gelato” sounds like a hot mess, but it’s awesome. You might even say cool. Gianluigi Dellaccio, the man behind local gelato company Dolci Gelati, just rolled out gelato caldo (in English, “hot gelato”) at his shop in Shaw. Dellaccio learned about the dessert while in Milan training to be a gelato teacher. The idea was that something less cold would encourage people to eat gelato through the winter. “Obviously, this is not the right time of year to do it,” he said. Except for the fact that it happens to be perfectly suited to hot Washington summers, because even after sitting at room temperature for an extended period of time, gelato caldo won’t melt. The reason is how it’s made, which Dellaccio demonstrated on a recent afternoon. He started with pistachio gelato, made in a 75-year-old gelato machine that

Gender-neutral robe a move to equality Embracing transgender fairness, some schools switch to 1 gown color MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD. Chloe Martin-Poteet will be wearing a white cap and gown when she graduates this month. Her brother, Julian, will be dressed in royal blue. It’s part of a two-color tradition at James Hubert Blake High School: girls in one hue, boys in another. That tradition is ending. As a growing number of the nation’s schools work to embrace transgender students and enact policies to protect their rights, there’s a movement afoot in Maryland’s Montgomery County to make graduation robes genderneutral, with one color for all. Some students argue that no one should have to wear a garment that doesn’t reflect who they are, nor should there be any separation between the genders as they all cross into adulthood. “Some people say it’s just a color, but if it is just a color, why can’t they all be the same color so we can be inclusive?” asks Chloe, a leader in her school’s gay-straight alliance, which has pressed for change in letters to principals at the county’s 25 high schools. With graduation season here, three Montgomery high schools

— Damascus, Sherwood and Walter Johnson — have shifted to single-color robes, and at least five others have decided to make the change for next year’s graduates. Principals at several of those schools said the student letters played a role in the decision. “They are all Class of 2015,” said Jennifer Webster, principal at Damascus High, where students graduated late last month in green caps and gowns. “Why differentiate?” Webster said she has worked with students who are conflicted about which gown color to choose because they associate with one gender yet are listed as another. When she received the letter from students at Blake, it immediately

resonated. “You’re right,” she recalled thinking as she read it. The move comes amid growing awareness of the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students nationwide. At Blake, Julian and Chloe Martin-Poteet, both leaders in the gay-straight alliance, said the effort has been rewarding, even as they are scheduled to graduate Wednesday in colors designated by gender. “For us, it’s a victory,” Julian said. “The change could have come faster, but it was still pretty good.” Chloe agreed: “It’s exciting to accomplish something you know will last.” DONNA ST. ‘He said “I will kill you” ’ FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA. A young woman allegedly assaulted by Jesse Matthew Jr. told jurors on Monday that her assailant grabbed her from behind, dragged her into the woods and threatened to kill her. The woman said the attacker choked her and tried to rape her. “He said ‘I will kill you if you scream again,’ ” the victim said in tense testimony. “He said ‘Let

me do this and I’ll let you go.’ ” The woman testified on the opening day of the trial for Matthew, who is accused in her Sept. 24, 2005, Fairfax City attack. In opening statements, prosecutors said the headlights of a parked car may have saved her life by startling the man and causing him to flee. The trial is the first for Matthew, who authorities say may be a serial predator. He also has been charged with capital murder in the high-profile killing of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, and authorities

Police investigating homicide in Capitol Heights

say there is a DNA link between the Fairfax case and an investigation into the slaying of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington in 2009. Matthew has not been charged in that case. Prosecutors have said Matthew was linked to the Fairfax attack through DNA found under the woman’s fingernails. Matthew’s defense team said “there is a possibility” the DNA came from innocent contact and noted other people’s DNA was also in the sample taken from the victim. JUSTIN JOUVENAL AND T. United, District reach final terms on stadium THE DISTRICT District Mayor Muriel E. Bowser and D.C. United’s owners have finalized a stadium development deal to keep the team in D.C. provided that the District government secures the needed land by Sept. 30, according to multiple officials involved in negotiations. Bowser is expected to announce the deal today at a news conference, the officials said, likely ending the possibility that the team would leave for Virginia. Bowser tweeted the news herself shortly before 6 p.m. Monday. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the discussions were meant to

be private. The team’s managing partner, Jason Levien, and a spokeswoman for the mayor declined to comment. After the team’s discussions with Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Loudoun County officials became public last week, the mayor’s office hastened negotiations with the team. The basic deal, first negotiated by former Mayor Vincent Gray and approved by the D.C. Council late last year, remains in place. The District would pay $150 million to acquire and prepare land on Buzzard Point in Southwest Washington. D.C. United would then privately finance a stadium

of around 20,000 seats. The project is expected to cost around $286.7 million and is expected to open for the 2018 Major League Soccer season. Discussions have revolved around financial protections that members of Bowser’s economic team had moved to include in the deal, some of which caused the team’s ownership to balk, according to one of the officials. D.C. officials asked the team to foot part of the bill for cost overruns, for instance, and provide collateral in case D.C. acquired the land but United failed to build the stadium. One person has died in quadruple stabbing in D.C.

Officials make a major drug bust in 2 Md. counties

Slot machines are losing ground in Maryland’s casinos as younger gamblers seek out table games. Over the past 15 months, Maryland’s three largest casinos — Maryland Live, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore and Hollywood Casino Perryville — have kicked 1,350 slot machines to the curb. That’s a 16 percent cut to their slots to make room for more table games and other amenities.

Police say one of two people critically injured in a quadruple stabbing in Northwest Washington has died. D.C. Police spokeswoman Aquita Brown said Monday a female victim died. The stabbing happened just before 9:25 p.m. Sunday a few blocks from the U Street Metro Station. Police did not release any details about the other two people who were stabbed. It was the second quadruple stabbing in the District on Sunday. (AP)

Officers on Monday raided more than two dozen residences and a business in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, charging 18 with conspiring to sell heroin and cocaine out of a town-home community in Montgomery and a music studio in Prince George’s. REVERSE TYPE II DIABETES You’re Invited to a

Free Diabetic Dinner Event A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association confirms that Type II Diabetes can be put into remission. (JAMA 2012 Dec. 19;308 (23):2489-96.) Topics Include: • Top 3 reasons diabetics may get worse with time. • A unique clinical approach that has been shown to facilitate the reversal of type II diabetes. • A look beyond genetics, weight gain, and exercise.

Reversing Diabetes in Just Weeks! “This program has far exceeded my expectations. In a short two weeks after starting, I was able to come off my Insulin injection medication. My primary doctor told me I would be on Insulin for the rest of my life. I have lost about 30 pounds in just over two months. Most of my body aches have gone away. I am happy with myself and progress, which I haven’t felt proud of myself in a long time. I have received great support from the staff and my family.” - Donald Wiggins

The Dinner presentation will also discuss how many Type II Diabetics have been able to reduce and eliminate their need for prescription medication and insulin, lose weight without exercise, reduce and eliminate the risk for diabetic complications, and even become clinically non-diabetic. Also discover rarely used diagnostic testing that is helping doctors understand potential causes of diabetes beyond genetics, weight gain, dieting, and lack of exercise.

Try not to get all broken up over this

A McKinney, Texas, police officer has been placed on administrative leave after a video was posted online showing him pointing his gun at two unarmed teenagers and pushing a teenage girl in a swimsuit to the ground.

Tensions rise following police incident in Texas Some call for firing of officer who drew gun on unarmed black kids McKINNEY, TEXAS A black teenager in a swimsuit repeatedly cried out, “Call my momma!” as a white police officer pinned her to the ground, only moments after drawing his handgun on other black teens. “On your face!” the officer yelled at the girl, amid screaming from a crowd of onlookers. The officer’s actions raised tensions Monday in McKinney, a Dallas suburb, where some community activists accused him of

racism while others urged calm until the facts are investigated. Jahi Adisa Bakari, the father of one of the teen girls at the party, said the officer was he would press for the officer to be fired, saying he “was out of control.” But Benét Embry, a black local radio personality who witnessed the incident, said it was “not another Ferguson” or “another Baltimore,” referring to other police encounters that have fueled a nationwide movement. “This was a teenage party that got out of hand,” Embry said. Police said the youths did not live in the area and did not have permission to be at the pool.

According to neighbors, Embry said, a woman who lives in the community reserved the pool for a party. The homeowners’ association limits the number of guests each homeowner may have at the pool to only two. But about 130 people, mostly kids, showed up for the woman’s party, he said. McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller said city officials plan to meet with community leaders to discuss the incident. The officer has been placed on administrative leave. In a statement, the police department said the video “raised concerns that are being investigated.”

Recently, an ominous sign has appeared throughout Texas. “The purchase of eggs is limited to 3 cartons of eggs per customer,” read warnings posted at H-E-B grocery stores across Texas. “The United States is facing a temporary disruption in the supply of eggs due to the Avian Flu,” the chain explained in a statement Thursday said. As of this month, some 46 million chickens and turkeys have been affected, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Nearly 80 percent of those are egg-laying hens. Given how fruitless efforts have been to contain the flu so far, it’s hard to imagine the system will be flooded with a fresh stream of eggs any time soon. ROBERTO A. FERDMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

between Congress and the president with the thorny politics of the volatile Middle East. The ruling ended a 12-yearold lawsuit by a Jerusalem-born American, Menachem Zivotofsky, and his U.S.-citizen parents. The law struck down Monday would have forced the State Department to alter its long-standing policy of not listing Israel as the birthplace for Jerusalem-born Americans. The policy is part of the government’s refusal to recognize any nation’s sovereignty over Jerusalem until Israelis and Palestinians resolve its status.

Also on Monday ACCEPTED: The justices said Monday they will review a $5.8 million class-action judgment against Tyson Foods Inc. over the pay for more than 3,000 workers, weighing new limits on workers’ ability to band together to dispute pay and workplace issues. DECLINED: The court won’t hear an appeal from an environmentalist group found in contempt of court for disrupting Japanese whale hunters. DECLINED: The court declined to review a decision leaving intact San Francisco’s law requiring that handguns be stored in a lockbox. (AP)

Justice Anthony Kennedy said in his majority opinion that the president has the exclusive power to recognize foreign nations, and that determining what a passport says is part of that power. “Recognition is a topic on which the nation must speak with one voice. That voice must be the president’s,” Kennedy wrote. Justice Antonin Scalia challenged Kennedy’s analysis in a vigorous dissent. “Who says so?” Scalia said. “The text and structure of the Constitution divide responsibility for foreign policy.”

LightSail finally deploys its sail Since launching on May 20, the Planetary Society’s solar sail prototype — called LightSail and inspired by an idea Carl Sagan championed — hasn’t exactly had smooth seas. It took days to get the spacecraft to do the one thing it was sent up to do: deploy its sail, proving that a propulsion system thinner than human hair could be packed away and unfurled safely in space. On June 7, Planetary Society CEO Bill Nye reports, the sail finally unfurled. Next, Nye and his colleagues will send another satellite into orbit that will use its Mylar sail to catch the physical force of particles emitted by the sun in the same way a ship’s sail catches the wind. Nye hopes the technology will allow small research vessels — and one day perhaps larger spacecraft — to operate more efficiently. FDA weighs Amgen’s new cholesterol drug

Manhunt for escaped killers enters third day

Federal health regulators said Monday a highly-anticipated, experimental drug from Amgen significantly lowers bad cholesterol. But officials have questions about who should take the drug and whether to approve it based on currently available data. The Food and Drug Administration posted its review of Amgen’s Repatha ahead of a public meeting to consider its approval. Repatha is part of a new class of cholesterol drugs that are considered the first major advance in lowering bad, or LDL, cholesterol in more than 20 years, and analysts expect them to generate billions in sales. (AP)

Investigators questioned prison workers and outside contractors Monday to try to find out who may have helped two killers obtain the power tools they used to break out of a maximum-security institution in an audacious, “Shawshank Redemption”-style escape. The manhunt stretched into a third day, with law officers questioning drivers and searching trunks at checkpoints near the Clinton Correctional Facility in far northern New York, even though authorities said David Sweat and Richard Matt — both convicted killers — could be anywhere, perhaps Canada or Mexico. A pause on immigration Efforts to move ahead on Obama order in flux after injunction halts it POLITICS A series of legal setbacks have halted the government’s intensive preparations to move forward with President Barack Obama’s executive actions shielding some illegal immigrants from deportation, even as community organizations continue to get ready for the programs, according to U.S. officials and advocacy groups. Obama said in November that

up to 5 million illegal immigrants would be eligible to be shielded from deportation. But after Texas and 25 other states sued the administration, calling the moves unconstitutional, a federal judge in Texas in February put them on hold until the case is resolved. A federal appeals court recently upheld that injunction, with legal observers now saying the court fight could last until late in Obama’s term. Since February, the Department of Homeland Security has suspended plans to hire up to 3,100 employees. A building the

government has leased for them for $7.8 million a year is now mostly unused, DHS employees say. Yet community groups are mobilizing, educating immigrants and training volunteers to help them apply for relief, even though it’s unclear whether the program will ever begin. “We’re full speed ahead,” said Josh Hoyt, executive director of the National Partnership for New Americans, a coalition of pro-immigrant groups that have held more than 700 information sessions on the new programs. Now, the College Board, which owns the SAT, says it is trying to figure out what to do about the mistake. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Sesame Street’ smarts Study: Children’s show provides long-lasting educational benefits, equal to preschool WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE SWITCH

Apple gets in the streaming music game

RICHARD TERMINE (SESAME STREET)

NEW YORK Most Americans born since the mid-1960s have a favorite “Sesame Street” skit. Jennifer Kotler Clarke watched hers on a black-and-white television set in her family’s Bronx apartment. There were two aliens: One of them had long arms that didn’t move, while the other had short, moving arms. The aliens wished to eat apples from a tree, and they succeeded, after a couple of minutes, by working together. “Let’s call this cooperation,” one of them says. “No,” the other replies, “let’s call it Shirley.” Clarke grew up to be the show’s vice president for research and evaluation, and she has long believed that the program’s laughs and lessons stick with children. Now, landmark academic research appears to back her up. The most authoritative study ever done on the impact of “Sesame Street,” released Monday, finds that the famous show on public TV has delivered lasting educational benefits to millions of American children — benefits as powerful as the ones children get from going to preschool. The paper from the University of Maryland’s Melissa Kearney and Wellesley College’s Phillip Levine finds that the show has left children more likely to stay at the appropriate grade level for their age, an effect that is particularly pronounced among boys, AfricanAmericans and children who grow up in disadvantaged areas. After “Sesame Street” was introduced, children living in places where its broadcast could be more readily received saw a 14 percent drop in their likelihood of being behind in school. Levine and Kearney note in their paper that a wide body of previous research has found that Head Start, the pre-kindergarten

The researchers also say those effects probably come from the show’s focus on presenting viewers with an academic curriculum, heavy on reading and math, that would appear to have helped prepare children for school. While it might seem implausible that a TV show could have such effects, the results build on Nixon-era government studies

that found big short-term benefits in watching the show, along with years of focus-group studies by the team of academic researchers who help write “Sesame Street” scripts. Several outside researchers have reviewed the study, and none are known to have questioned its results. The new findings offer comforting news for parents who put their children in front of public TV every day and/or memorized entire Elmo DVDs, unwittingly. They also raise a provocative question: Do kids need preschool if a TV show works just as well? Yes, say the economists — and the “Sesame Street” educational team. Head Start, Kearney and Levine write, was designed to provide more than an academic boost: It delivers family support, medical and dental services, and development of emotional skills that help kids in social settings. Levine and Kearney see the

study as a clear lesson in the value of a (very cheap) mass-media complement to preschool. The potentially controversial implication they embrace from the study isn’t about early-childhood education. It’s about college, and the trend toward low-cost massive open online courses, or MOOCs. “Sesame Street,” Levine and Kearney write, was the original MOOC. “If we can do this with ‘Sesame Street’ on television, we can potentially do this with all sorts of electronic communications,” Kearney said. T he rese a rch c a n’t s ay whether the show continues to deliver such high benefits to children, said Diane Whitmore Schanzenbach, an economist at Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy. But, she said, it clearly shows “the importance of childhood education, which is really having its moment right now.” JIM TANKERSLEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THREE POINTERS

Nats stuck in a slump

NATIONALS Steve McCatty has a dilemma. It occurs whenever he flips on the television and hears another disparaging rant about Stephen Strasburg. The Nationals pitching coach senses himself staging a defense, the very thing he wishes to avoid. He wants to scream Strasburg’s career numbers, black and white and unassailable. He wants to describe the behindthe-scenes habits of the pitcher teammates say is the hardest worker on the team. And then he stops himself. “Why am I defending him when I don’t feel like I should have to?” McCatty said. “He hasn’t done anything wrong.” On June 8, 2010 — precisely five years ago Monday — Strasburg roared into the major leagues with uncomplicated brilliance. In his maiden performance, a major league debut built up with virtually unprecedented hype, Strasburg struck out 14 Pirates hitters, walked none and tipped his cap on the home dugout steps at feverish, brimming Nationals Park. For a moribund franchise, Strasburg was a talisman. Five years later, the franchise is now a powerhouse, and Strasburg stands as a vexing case. He is on the disabled list

because of a left trapezius strain, his ERA stuck at 6.55 while he plays early-afternoon toss as part of rehab. He also entered the year with a career 3.02 ERA and an All-Star appearance. Try to describe the state of Strasburg five years after his magical debut, and you start to feel McCatty’s pain. Strasburg throws with less menacing velocity than in his rookie season, but he led the NL in strikeouts last year. He carries a reputation for fragility, yet he made every start and logged 215 innings last season. His outward demeanor makes it a challenge for fans to adore him, but he is a devoted husband and father. “He hasn’t been the best pitcher in the game, but hardly anyone ever is,” Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman said. “But I definitely would want him on our team.” Strasburg, who will turn 27 in July, probably still has the majority of his career ahead of him. His immense raw talent combined with a historic debut led to stratospheric expectations. His 2010 Tommy John surgery and shutdown before the 2012 postseason added scrutiny. His standoffish public persona and aloof demeanor on the mound robbed him of the benefit of the doubt. “The stuff was and is so good; the expectations are really high,” McCatty said. “Some people never see him do it enough. I’m not crying double standard. I’m

just saying, you got to look back, and the numbers he’s put up in the big leagues, they’ve been outstanding.” Strasburg can be maddening to watch, but McCatty is right: Five years into his career, Strasburg has been great, demonstrably so. Statistically, he has been one of the best 15 or 20 pitchers in baseball. Without the hype, he might stand like any other productive pitcher, one with good traits and weak points. But he is viewed with a different lens.

Treinen’s just one example of the bullpen’s struggles. He’s made six appearances since May 29 and allowed at least one run in three of them.

1 Ryan Zimmerman Nationals first baseman

The switch to first has gone smoothly, but Zimmerman hasn’t produced at the plate all year. In the past 10 games, he’s 4-for-31 (.129) with seven strikeouts and just two RBIs.

The home run derby isn’t until July 13, but Bryce Harper already isn’t sure if he will compete in the event. The biggest reason is personal: his father, Ron, who threw to Harper during the 2013 home run derby, underwent rotator cuff surgery after a winter snowboarding accident. “If I win it for the first time, I want it to be with my dad,” said Harper, who leads the NL in All-Star voting and the majors in homers (19). “That’s something really special. Warriors point guard was quick to dismiss bad game as a fluke NBA FINALS Stephen Curry has faced doubts all along the way to becoming the league’s MVP and the leader of a historically dominant team three wins away from a championship. The next obstacle on Curry’s steady ride up the NBA hierarchy is handling himself when greatness is the expectation, not the pleasant surprise.

In Golden State’s 95-93 overtime loss in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday, Curry was 5-for-23 from the field, with a Finals record 13 missed 3-pointers. “Sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “I’ve seen it with everybody. I’ve seen it with Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan. It doesn’t matter who you are. Nobody is immune from a tough night.” The point guard was quick to dismiss the dreadful performance as a one-game fluke.

“I doubt this will happen again,” Curry said. “Shots I normally make I knew as soon as they left my hand that they were off. That doesn’t usually happen.” The concern for Golden State is if Curry has actually fallen into an untimely funk that goes back to his ugly fall in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals. Curry hit his head on the hardwood but also hurt his shooting elbow on that crash landing. After a seven-day break before the start of the Finals,

Curry faces MVP-sized expectations

Stephen Curry missed an NBA Finals record 13 3-pointers Sunday.

Curry scored a game-high 26 points on 10-for-20 shooting to lead the Warriors to an overtime win in Game 1 against the Cavaliers. But in the other three games since the injury, Curry is shooting 19-for-62 from the field and 11-for-49 from 3-point range. Now Curry must respond in MVP fashion tonight in Game 3 in Cleveland (9 p.m., ABC). Against the undermanned Cavaliers, the Warriors are supposed to win — a position with which Curry is still growing accustomed. MICHAEL LEE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

GOLF By late Monday morning, Woods was still barely 24 hours removed from wrapping up the worst tournament performance of his professional career, a lastplace, 14-over-par showing at the Memorial. “I look at it this way: It’s all about getting reps,” Woods said. “I got a lot of reps this weekend.” It was certainly not the storyline Woods was hoping to put forth on the Quicken Loans National media day for his D.C.-area tournament, which this year moves to a new venue, RTJ Golf Club, as well as a new date, July 30-Aug. 2. But so it goes with Woods, now ranked 181st in the world as he approaches his 40th birthday in December. His five tournaments this year have produced a missed cut in Phoenix, a back-related withdrawal at Torrey Pines, a tie for 17th at the Masters, a tie for 69th at the Players Championship and last week’s gruesome bottoming-out in Ohio. “I’ve had times like this in my life where I’ve gone through these periods, but you just have to fight through it,” he said. “I’m committed to what I’m doing [with swing coach Chris Como] and I’m committed to the [swing] changes, and once I start to snowball and start getting things more solidified, then that’s when things will start coming together.” DAVE SHEININ (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Health nuts and hipsters flocked to Daybreaker’s morning soiree at a Shaw nightclub.

MILESTONES

Dancing into the day Via self-expression and community, an event aims to wake up D.C. INSPIRATION Behind a bar at Flash, a Shaw nightclub, a woman with funky bangs fills cups with iced coffee. It’s free trade and organic, she says, adding that kombucha, a fermented tea, and chia seed drinks are also on hand. It’s about 7 a.m., and a crowd of mostly millennials has congregated on the dance floor for the launch of Daybreaker, a movement reinventing nightlife as a health-infused wake-up party. Daybreaker was conceived by Brooklynites Radha Agrawal, 36, and Matthew Brimer, 28, who craved a healthy, booze-free alternative to the bottle-service scene of New York nightclubs. So they set out to prove that inhibitions could be freed from a state of sobriety with an event to revitalize people at the break of day. “What if we could create the most fantastic way to start off your morning,” went the thinking to “make people feel alive, inspired, creative,” Brimer says.

Virginia Yoga Week starts Sunday

A DJ-accompanied yoga class kicked off the launch party.

A year and a half ago, they held the first Daybreaker in New York, drawing 180 people; now the parties pack in up to 1,200, Agrawal says. Washington is the ninth city to host Daybreaker, which has spread, through the efforts of local organizers, to San Francisco, Austin, London and Tel Aviv, for example, with places like Paris, Berlin and Sydney poised to present it next. According to Brimer, a few hundred joined Daybreaker’s D.C. debut, which adhered to the event’s standard format: 6.am. yoga followed by a two-hour dance party; a closing ceremony features inspirational poems

or quotes read in unison from “intention cards” printed with a prodding question on the back. In D.C. it was “What do you desire?” The dance party felt like a cross between a carnival and a club as hands-in-the-air, spandex-shaking masses let loose alongside performances by a drummer, saxophonists and a pair of women in glittery bikini tops twirling flashing hula hoops. Kara Gordon, 22, of Takoma, prefers post-work workouts. But the chance to chase yoga with coffee and dancing was too good an offer to pass up. “I’m a health nut, so I don’t go out and party a lot,” she says.

LavaBarre to hold grand opening of Rosslyn studio Friday

Self-proclaimed “morning people” Kirsten Bourne, 33, and Nick Renzler, 29, of Bloomingdale, embraced the Daybreaker concept. There’s an optimism to the morning — “feeling like you have a clean slate,” she says. Daybreaker reminded Bourne of being at Burning Man, a weeklong experimental community in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. Indeed, Burning Man inspired Daybreaker, says Agrawal, who attended the festival with Brimer three years ago. “We wanted to emulate the energy and spirit of Burning Man and also give it our own flair,” she said via email. “Wellness plus community” is how Agrawal describes the experience. And the message seemed to resonate. “What’s a better way to wake up than listen to some good music” and “have the opportunity to be with your friends,” says Remy Onstad, 30, of Logan Circle. “This beats the gym in the morning.” Daybreaker is slated to return to D.C. monthly and charge $25 for tickets and an extra $10 for yoga. See dybrkr.com for details.

A call for legal ease Check your bloodsucking lawyer jokes here. The Lawyers Have Heart 10K Race and 5K Run/Walk hopes to soften the profession’s hard-core reputation by taking a stand (or jog) against heart disease and stroke. It also offers a physical antidote to the dangers of stress so rife among local law firms, according to D.C. attorney and race cofounder Richard Frank. Saturday’s race marks the 25th anniversary of the event, which has raised more than $9.6 million for the American Heart Association. Standard registration costs $50 and is offered at City Sports (715 7th St. NW) and on race day at Georgetown’s Washington Harbour. For more info, visit lawyershaveheartdc. org. Q. I get a very sketchy vibe

from one of my daughter’s friend’s dads. He often appears under the influence of something and is very flirtatious with many of us moms. My daughter is nearly a teenager, and going forward I don’t want her hanging out at this girl’s house if the dad is around, but I don’t have anything concrete to base my objection on. CONCERNED MOM

Mom pulled out the rug, and more

BEGINS JUNE 22

Q. When I moved to a small apartment from a big townhouse, my mom agreed to keep some of my furniture until I could sell it. Only a few months have gone by and she has arranged to have it donated to a nonprofit her friend runs. I am so angry because I counted on getting some money for it, yet I can’t object because I sound selfish. Do I really have to just let this go? UGGGGH

News. Bite-sized.

Well, is it midcentury modern? If you’re reading this before the truck shows up, you can contact your mom’s friend directly to call off the donation. Drawbacks: Not only does that awkwardly punish a presumably worthy nonprofit, but you’d also need an immediate plan of what to do with the furniture, because your mom has definitively given it the boot.

local

Major stories and headlines for the time-pressed.

You may choose to view this as a lesson learned — and how you spin it is up to you. Is it that your mom hates redundant settees? Is she not one to be trusted in general? Perhaps her urge to do good for the world (wink, wink) is just too hard for her to resist. Whatever you glean from this, take comfort that you won’t let it burn you twice — at least not in this particular way.

I’d argue that you do have something concrete: overly flirtatious behavior. And your gut instinct. You don’t have to find a pill bottle or get conversations analyzed by a body-language expert to have the right to be uncomfortable with a certain adult unsupervised around your adolescent daughter. The tricky part, of course, is to minimize the cost to your daughter and her friend in the process, which you can do by finding ways that they can still maintain their friendship. Perhaps you can create a ritual of sleepovers at your house rather than theirs, or be the go-to driver to whatever mall-equivalent hangout kids these days go to. And as they grow up and you observe more, you can adjust accordingly. Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of the book “The Friendship Fix” (friendshipfix.com).

Muse does away with dated flourishes for its somber album ‘Drones’ ALBUM REVIEW The British band Muse is one of only a handful of rock bands playing arenas in America. It’s not hard to see why: Muse is a prog band dressed up like a rock band, minus the synth solos. Muse’s last album, 2012’s “The

2nd Law,” was overstuffed with strings, operatic rock and Skrillex-style dubstep. Its trimmer follow up, “Drones,” out now, is a back-to-basics prog album: it’s all hard edges and sharp elbows. It’s probably the best Muse album in years, though it’s too concerned with the usual themes (oppressed citizen battles the security state), with which it ultimately does too little. In its own way, it’s a breakup

album (chronicling the end of lead singer Matthew Bellamy’s relationship with Kate Hudson) that is as much about a personal dystopia as a political one. The best tracks function on both levels, like the Reznor-ian electropop opener “Dead Inside,” or “Reapers,” a minor masterpiece

of falsettos and guitar shredding. At its worst, “Drones” is too weighted. The title track is joyless and literal. It’s a waste of a perfectly good national security crisis, and one of several tracks that makes evident the gap between Muse’s vision and its grasp. ALLISON STEWART (THE WASHINGTON POST)

RODGER SHERMAN AT SBNATION.COM can’t believe the terrible U.S. opening of “United Passions” this past weekend. The FIFA-backed film, which cost about $30 million to make, made an embarrassing $607 (that’s dollars, not thousands or millions). “United Passions” is essentially a giant love letter to Sepp Blatter, the scandalized commissioner who was basically forced into stepping down amid a massive corruption probe.

Discover how a master’s degree powered by GW’s 130 years of proven excellence can help you to drive your organization’s innovation and growth. Gain an understanding of effective managerial roles, the complexities of technological organizations, and proven management techniques.

Starbucks debuted six new flavors Monday, including caramel cocoa cluster, cinnamon roll and red velvet cake. Beginning June 19, customers can vote for their favorite at frappuccino.com. The winning flavor will be announced July 3.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ve settled on a course of action, but you may still be considering an alternative that can somehow be explored separately. CANCER (June 21-July 22) A faster pace is tempting, surely, but you must be aware of certain dangers that will arise if you try to do anything too quickly. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may not be understood completely, yet at the same time, you may be misunderstanding what a loved one is trying to tell you. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You must pay attention to one or two sticking points. The success of a current project depends on your ability to maneuver. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may be expecting too much from others. Realize that not everyone is able to keep up with you — at least, not in the way you prefer. 2015 Contest Winners Announced

“What can you do to improve your local watershed?”

Thank you to all the students, teachers and partners who participated this year! Hundreds of area students in grades 6-8 competed to develop solutions to watershed issues. Classroom teams presented their proposals at the Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit on May 29 at Anacostia Park in Washington, DC. This program empowers students to imagine, develop and create solutions in their local watersheds, as they develop research, problemsolving, budgeting, community-involvement and presentation skills.

Washington Latin Public Charter School students won top honors for their project which aims to raise awareness on the ecological benefits of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay.

Final Place

Award

Nearly $10,000 was awarded in cash prizes and school awards. Agrium is also providing $10,000 to help implement student ideas. Turning ideas into realistic solutions is the key to improving our local watersheds.

Supermodel Kate Moss was escorted off a plane Sunday after reportedly being disruptive while traveling from Turkey to London’s Luton airport. Conflicting reports circulated about the nature of Moss’ behavior. A source who was allegedly seated near Moss on the flight told Us Weekly that “there was no shouting. At no point was she told off by crew or told to change her behavior. [I’m] surprised the police were called.” But according to Britain’s The Daily Mirror, Moss was denied alcohol on the flight and was seen sipping vodka from a bottle in her luggage. The Mirror added that as police escorted her from the plane, Moss called the pilot “a basic b----.” (EXPRESS/AP)

verbatim “I read the reviews that, ‘Salma Hayek was a bombshell,’ and to me this means that I was terrible, that I had bombed!”

A source close to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West told TMZ that the couple will not give their second child, due in December, a directional name like their daughter, North’s. The source elaborated that while “North” has a positive connotation (as in pointing up), none of the other names seem as “strong.” The child will instead likely be named for Kardashian’s late father or West’s late mother.
