‘Cute!’ Says Everyone Except The Car Insurance Company After going for a walk, a German shepherd puppy owned by a Massachusetts man decided to go for a drive — straight into a pond. John Costello said his 12-week-old puppy, Rosie, was so excited Sunday after their walk that she jumped in his running car, hit the gear stick and shifted into drive, before falling onto the gas pedal and sending the car into the water. Obama Orders Pollution Cuts Taking aim at global warming, President Barack Obama introduced a politically charged plan Monday to order big and lasting cuts in the pollution discharged by America’s power plants. The proposal drew immediate scorn from Republicans, industry groups and even a few Democrats who are facing fraught re-election campaigns in energydependent states. Environmental activists were split, with some hailing the plan and others calling it insufficiently strict to prevent the worst effects of global warming. Here’s some of what you need to know. (AP) How much pollution will it really cut? The proposal announced Monday calls for the nation’s fossil-fuel fired power plants to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent from 2005 levels by 2030. But Environmental Protection Agency data shows that the nation’s power plants already have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 13 percent since 2005, or about halfway to the goal. The EPA also says the regulation will also reduce other pollutants that create lung-damaging smog and soot by more than 25 percent by 2030.

Why power plants? Power plants are the largest source of the gases blamed for global warming, accounting for 38 percent of all greenhouse gases in the U.S., but there are no national limits on carbon pollution from power plants. About threequarters of the power plant emissions are from coal-fired plants. The average age today of the coal-fired generating fleet is 42 years, and 11 percent of units are more than 60 years old. By 2025, that average age will grow to 49, with 20 percent of units 60 years or older.

This “is the most important step taken to combat the climate crisis in our country’s history.” — Al Gore, former vice president

“This rule simply doesn’t go far enough.” — Erich Pica, Friends of the Earth

“The administration for all intents and purposes is creating America’s next energy crisis.” — Mike Duncan, of the American Council for Clean Coal Electricity

Will it make a dent in global warming? A small one. The rule will push the U.S. closer to the 17 percent reduction from 2005 levels by 2020 it promised other countries at the start of Obama’s presidency, but it will fall far short of the global reductions scientists say are needed to stabilize the planet’s temperature. That’s because U.S. fossil-fueled power plants only account for about 6 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions. However, the administration is hoping this move shows other countries the U.S. is serious about the problem when it begins negotiations this fall toward a new, binding international treaty.

How does this compare with other Obama actions? It turns out that Obama’s fuel economy efforts cut a bigger chunk of the U.S.’ greenhouse gas emissions. Obama tackled the emissions from the nation’s cars and trucks, announcing rules to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by doubling fuel economy. That standard will reduce carbon dioxide by 6 billion tons over the life of vehicles covered by the program. The power plant proposal will cut carbon dioxide emissions by 5 billion tons from 2020 to 2030. Another proposal to cut pollution at newly built power plants will have little impact because not many coal-fired power plants are set to be built.

Good Luck With That: Cesar Chavez is running for Congress in 2014. No, the late Mexican-American civil rights activist is not making a bid. But a candidate who changed his name to Cesar Chavez is running in Arizona’s 7th District, a liberal area with a large Hispanic population. Formerly Scott Fistler, Chavez legally changed his name last year. The Republican-turned-Democrat may still be having an identity crisis, however: His website apparently shows photos of people at a rally for then-Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Oops. Study: Female Storm Names Less Fearsome Washington People don’t take hurricanes as seriously if they have a feminine name and the consequences are deadly, a new groundbreaking study says. Female-named storms have historically killed more because people neither consider them as risky nor take the same precautions, a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says. Researchers at the University of Illinois and Arizona State University examined six decades of hurricane death rates according to gender, and female-named hurricanes produced nearly double the fatalities than male-named storms. Researchers also found people predicted male hurricanes to be more intense than female hurricanes. In another exercise, the hurricane sex affected how respondents said they would prepare for a hurricane. JASON SAMENOW (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Long Live the (Retired) King Spain’s King Juan Carlos announced Monday he will abdicate in favor of his more popular son. His decision makes him the third European monarch since 2013 — following Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and King Albert II of Belgium — to decide to retire. Here are some ways kingdoms have changed — and why monarchs are quitting. MIKE CORDER (AP) Privacy, please!

Belgium’s King Albert II was 79 years old and in frail health when he handed over the reins to his son. Declining health also appears at play in Spain, as Juan Carlos is 76. There is a growing feeling in Europe that “monarchs have a job to do and they should do that while they are fit and able ... and when they can’t they should hand on,” said Mary Vincent, professor of modern European history at the University of Sheffield in England.

There was a time when royal houses were revered leaders and figureheads. These days, experts say, they are more like celebrities, dogged by reporters and paparazzi everywhere from shopping trips to state openings of Parliament. Life in the limelight can be tiring and maybe make a monarch long for a bit of privacy in retirement. It can also make royals more susceptible to scandal.

Not everyone is stepping away

blocking out the sun in a swirling cloud and tearing down trees in a squall that reportedly killed at least four people and injured 30.

Some royal houses remain popular by embracing generational change while keeping their elderly sitting kings and queens. England is a key example — the ever-popular Elizabeth is increasingly delegating duties to her son and grandsons. Kings and queens also have been breaking down barriers between themselves and their subjects — the British royal house has had a Twitter account for five years. “These days, sitting behind the safe walls of a gated palace is no longer possible,” Evers said.

A Six-Hour Workday? In Swedish City, It’ll Be Real

EBRAHIM NOROOZI (AP)

A HEAVY DUST STORM roared into Iran’s capital of Tehran on Monday,

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has made clear she has no plans to abdicate and monarchs in Scandinavia also are showing no intention to step down. “The British crown will not be passed on before they announce, ‘The Queen is dead, long live the King,’” said Rick Evers, a correspondent with Dutch royalty magazine Vorsten. “The same is true for Denmark, Sweden and Norway.”

Monarchies in the 21st century

Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city, will begin its experiment with six-hour working days this summer, hopefully proving that the shorter work hours can make up for what they lose in time with more efficient work. If the plan goes well, it could spread across the Swedish civil society, but some lucky Gothenburg residents are already living the dream. Last week, Agence France-Presse spoke to a mechanic in the city who was working a six-hour day. “My friends hate me. Most of them think because I work six hours, I shouldn’t be paid for eight,” Robert Nilsson explained. The experiment in Gothenburg aims to determine whether one of the biggest arguments in favor of shorter working days is actually

true. In the trial, due to start July 1, one group of government workers will work six hours a day, while another will continue working the eight-hour days they are used to. If the workers with shorter hours are found to be better of f menta lly and physica lly, and are working more efficiently, the six-hour workday may be extended to other parts of the civil service. It’s not the first time Swedes have tried out a shorter work week, but proponents are hoping for better results this time. The Swedish town of Kiruna gave up its sixhour working days in 2005 after finding that the increased intensity of work was not a positive, and had negative effects on health. Residents of Donetsk, Ukraine, destroy candy being given away by rebels Sunday.

In Ukraine, Even Candy Is Political It started off as a PR stunt and ended in one gooey mess Donetsk, Ukraine The conflict in eastern Ukraine has been fought with bullets, bombs and mortars. But on Sunday, the weapons of choice were chocolate, caramel and lemon-lime. What started as a separatist publicity stunt ended in one angry mess. The rebel government had staged a rally for children in Donetsk’s Lenin Square to highlight what it claims are indiscriminate Ukrainian army attacks on civilians. Moms and dads flocked to the square, kids in tow, to hear speakers rail against the “bloodthirsty Kiev junta.” At the end, there was a surprise: A van pulled up and militants dressed in camouflage hopped out, bearing candy they said had been plundered from a local warehouse. Kids squealed with delight. Parents rushed to claim their share. But then, some in the crowd noticed that the sweets were made by Roshen, the company owned by the Ukrainian tycoon known as the Chocolate King, Petro Poroshenko. Fairfax County schools superintendent Karen Garza is proposing significant changes to the school calendar for next fall, a move that would eliminate early elementary school release on Mondays and effectively add 10 days to the schedule to account for inclement weather. It also would eliminate half-day Mondays from the elementary schedule, which has vexed families with young children for decades by creating complex day-care situations. Middle school and high school students would see no change in their schedules, but the snow day flexibility likely would mean a more predictable end-of-year schedule in the event of snow. The schools had 11 snow days this past winter, causing the system to extend the school year by three days. The new schedule could provide more continuity for parents, teachers and students but also could cost the school system between $4 million and $7.6 million, a sig n i f ic a nt ne w e x p e n s e .

Nancy Strumwasser, a high school teacher from Mountain Lakes, N.J., always thought she’d have two children. But the layoffs that swept over the U.S. economy around the time her son was born in 2008 helped change her mind. Though she and her husband managed to keep their jobs, she fears they won’t be so fortunate next time. Nearly six years after the financial crisis began reducing birth rates around the world, people still aren’t having many babies. For those who fear an overcrowded planet, this is good news. For the economy, not so good. We tend to think economic growth comes from working harder and smarter. But economists attribute up to a third of it to more people joining the workforce each year than leaving it. The result is more producing, earning and spending. Now this secret fuel of the economy, rarely missing and little noticed, is running out. Births are falling in China, Japan, the United States, Germany, Italy and nearly all other European countries. Studies have shown that births drop when unemployment rises, such as during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Birth rates have fallen the most in some regions that were hardest hit by the financial crisis. The pool of potential workers — people ages 20-64 — had expanded for decades, thanks to the vast generation of baby boomers. Now the boomers are retiring, and there are barely enough new workers to replace them, let alone add to their numbers. “It’s like health — you only realize it exists until you don’t have it,” said Alejandro Macarron Larumbe, managing director of Demographic Renaissance, a think tank in Madrid. course. In France, where the government provides big subsidies and tax breaks for children, birth rates are back where they were in the early 1970s. In other countries, women who put off having children in the recession might play catch up soon, as they did after World War II. Demographers note that women were having children later in life even before the crisis, and so births are likely to rise anyway. But even a snapback in births to prerecession levels will leave families much smaller than they were decades ago. Park Hyun-kyung, a 34-year-old hospital administrator in Daegu, South Korea, says she would like to have three children, just like her parents. But she and her husband have decided to stick to one, if they have any. “Most jobs are not secure enough to allow couples to have a baby and raise kids,” she says. In China, where the working-age population is set to shrink next year, the government is relaxing a policy that had limited many families to one child. It might not help much. Chinese are choosing to stick to one on their own.

WHAT’S CHANGED In the European Union, births fell in 21 of 28 member countries in 2012 vs. 2008 when the economic crisis began, according to Eurostat, the EU statistics agency. In the four years preceding the crisis, births had fallen in just four of the 28 countries. In the United States, births fell 7 percent in the same four-year period after decades of increases. In Japan, births fell 5 percent to their lowest level since the 19th century. Meanwhile, growth in the workingage population has halted in developed countries, on average. In Japan, Germany and Italy, the labor pool is shrinking. Even in France and the United Kingdom, with relatively healthy birth rates, growth in the labor pool has slowed dramatically. WHY IT MATTERS Without a continued surge in new workers, many economists argue that developed economies are unlikely to return to “normal” economic growth of 3 percent a year, the average over four decades. The U.S. economy is projected to grow an average 2.3 percent a year in the eight years beginning in 2017, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Other estimates are lower. Robert Arnott, chairman of Research Affiliates, thinks the U.S. and other rich countries are likely to grow no more than 1.5 percent a year, on average, over the next several decades. THE EFFECTS Slower economic growth will limit wage gains and make it hard for middle-class families to raise their living standards. And companies won’t make as much in profits in a slower-growing economy, which will weigh down stock prices. (AP)

FIFA VP Denies Cup Corruption World Cup FIFA vice president and African football head Issa Hayatou has denied allegations in a British newspaper that he received free private medical treatment and other favors for backing Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup in a vote already marred by accusations of corruption and under investigation. In a statement released late Sunday night, the Confederation of African Football called the string of allegations against its longtime president and one of FIFA’s senior officials “fanciful” and “ridiculous.” The Sunday Times newspaper said that banned former Qatari official Mohamed bin Hammam, once a FIFA vice president himself, had targeted Hayatou and other African football leaders with cash, luxury trips and other gifts and favors to support Qatar’s ultimately successful World Cup bid. 84%

The Nats’ stolen base percentage — second best in the majors behind only the Yankees. Washington has been caught stealing five times out of 32 attempts this season.

Nationals With two outs in the third inning of Sunday’s game against the Rangers, Denard Span took off for second base. Jayson Werth was facing Texas ace Yu Darvish, and Span beat the throw and got into scoring position. 7:05 P.M. Today | MASN

Nothing came of the inning, as Darvish fanned Werth for one of his 12 strikeouts, but Span’s impact was still felt. So far this season, he has stolen a team-high eight bases and been caught only once. His stolen base rate (89 percent) ranks near the top of the majors, headlining a Nationals’ team that has improved its stolen base effectiveness (second-best 84 percent) since last season. son, Span is on pace to steal just under 24 bases, which would be the second-highest total of his career and best since he stole 26 in 2010. Last season, his first with the Nationals, Span made a goal of

improving his stolen base totals. His hitting turned into a larger priority, and he lagged behind his baserunning expectations, learning a new league of pitchers and feeling timid on the bases. He stole 20

bases in 26 attempts; Ian Desmond led the team with 21 stolen bases. Again this season, Span made improved baserunning a priority. With more confidence in his reads of pitchers and less fear of making a mistake, Span, now 30, has been more of a threat on the basepaths. Span, who is hitting .273 with an on-base percentage of .318, wants to keep it up and steal more. “It’s something I’ve been trying to do my whole career,” he said. “I’ve never gotten 30 so that’s something that’s a goal for me. It’s part of my game. I’ve got to be aggressive but I’ve got to be smart about it. I realize that it’s one of my attributes I have to maximize because I obviously don’t hit home runs so I’ve gotta find a way to get in scoring position and help the team score runs.” JAMES WAGNER (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Nadal Builds on Red Clay Record French Open For the first time in his career, Rafael Nadal will make a fifth straight appearance in the French Open quarterfinals. Nada l won a record 32nd straight match at Roland Garros on Monday, beating Dusan Lajovic 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 to improve on his own record by one. Nadal is an eight-time French Open champion with a 63-1 record on the red clay in Paris. His only loss came in the fourth round in 2009. The Spaniard, who turns 28 today, has lost only 23 games through four rounds, only four more than he lost in reaching the quarterfinals in 2012.

Manu Ginobili & Co. vs. Ray Allen & Co.

Gregg Popovich vs. Erik Spoelstra

Leonard goes from Kevin Durant to James, the MVP of the last two NBA Finals. James had 37 points and 12 rebounds last year in Game 7, while Leonard had 19 points and 16 boards. He helped force James into a 6-for-18 night in the Spurs’ March 6 victory, but James won’t be wearing the sleeved jerseys that he said affected him then. Edge: Heat

Green was headed for Finals MVP through five games last year, when he set the Finals record with 25 3-pointers, but he was 2-for-11 behind the arc over the final two. Wade is showing the benefits of a regular-season schedule with plenty of rest for his sore knees and is averaging 18.7 points on 52 percent shooting in the postseason. Edge: Heat

Parker missed the second half of San Antonio’s Game 6 clincher in the West finals with left ankle soreness, and the Spurs will need their All-Star to heal up before Thursday. If so, the Spurs are back to having a clear advantage at the position after having to face Damian Lillard and Russell Westbrook in the last two rounds. Edge: Spurs

Ginobili is healthier and Patty Mills is much improved off what appears to be a far stronger bench than San Antonio brought to the NBA Finals last year. Allen has had a strong postseason and Chris Anderson hit all four shots in Game 6 against Indiana after missing the previous two games with a thigh injury. Edge: Spurs

Popovich won the Coach of the Year award for leading the Spurs to the NBA’s best record, and remains considered the league’s best coach. But Spoelstra will be within one title of him if he wins this series and always seems to make the right move for his team, from managing Wade’s health to going small with Lewis against the Pacers. Edge: Spurs

Bosh went scoreless in Game 7, but showed he could hurt the Spurs offensively with a pair of 24-point outings this season. Duncan, who had 23 on 9-of-13 shooting in both regularseason games, gets another crack at a fifth ring after a pair of misses from close range in the final minute helped doom the Spurs in Game 7 last year. Edge: Spurs

Last series, Splitter went to the bench when the Spurs went small, and Lewis got to start when the Heat did the same, so it’s unclear what the teams will do now. Diaw had 26 points in the finale of the West finals and averaged 15.5 against the Heat this season. Lewis hit nine 3-pointers over the final two games of the East finals. Edge: Spurs

Storyline: Los Angeles is the first team in league history to win three Game 7s on the road in one postseason, a run that it started by becoming just the fourth NHL team to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first three games. The Rangers turned a good regular season into their greatest stretch of success in the playoffs since winning the Cup in 1994, by rolling four lines and playing good defense in front of a great goaltender. New York’s key player: Ryan McDonagh. The two-way blue-liner is playing the best hockey of his career, leading the Rangers with 10 assists this postseason.

Along for The Ryde Your body is a vehicle, so your life is a ride, says Ingrid Nelson, community director of PureRyde, a cycling/Pilates studio in Bethesda. Her goal is to teach students that whether they’re pedaling, squatting or facing any other challenge, they have more gas in the tank than they realize. It’s hard to argue with Nelson’s reasoning, and even tougher to keep up with her classes.

What it is: The Bethesda studio that opened in May is the first area location for the PureRyde chain, which started in Michigan and has expanded with outposts in Austin, Texas, and Oxford, Miss. Co-owner Laura Cronberger, who founded PureRyde with Kelle Ilitch, recently relocated to Washington and brought along their “athletic” approach to workouts. “We give you an extra push,” Cronberger says. That shove comes from both the instructors and the equipment. The cycling room features only RealRyder Indoor Cycling bikes, which lean to the sides, forcing core muscles to constantly engage. Pilates happens on Allegro 2 Reformers, which boast a series of weighted springs that can be added to increase difficulty. Dedicated exercisers can schedule back-to-back sessions of cycling

Workout: “Your abs are going to be sore. You’ll thank me tomorrow,” Nelson promised during a recent cycling class. No one seemed to doubt her, least of all Jolie Brown, 46, who’s been frequenting the new studio in her neighborhood. The first time she took cycling at PureRyde, “I felt like I’d done 200 situps,” Brown says.

and Pilates, but PureRyde doesn’t offer combo classes. “You wouldn’t get the full effect that way,” Cronberger says.

Moves: Every 50-minute class takes a different route, but they all start with a brief introduction to the equipment. For cycling, that means getting acclimated to the bike’s wobble and learning how to clip into the pedals. (Shoes are included in the price). For Pilates, that’s an explanation of the Reformer springs, straps and sliding carriage. Then the lights turn off and the music turns on. No muscle is allowed to slack off during Pilates, says Nelson, who warmed up a recent class w it h a series of jumps — a board placed at one end of the Reformer makes it possible to lie down on the carriage, push off and glide horizontally. The lying down didn’t last long. Nelson’s zippy transitions soon had students standing with one leg on the ground and the other on the carriage for lunges. Then they were on their knees on the carriage with straps in their hands as they pretended to shoot arrows. And then they were holding plank position, pulling their feet in and out. There isn’t quite as much variety in cycling, but the movement of the bikes allows for “turns” to the left and the right. Mix those in with sprints, standing on the pedals and optional hand weights and there are plenty of choices for

work it out

PureRyde community director Ingrid Nelson lives up to the words on her tank top.

PureRyde (6910 Arlington Road, Bethesda; 240-743-4049, pureryde.com) offers a single Pilates class for $35 or a single cycling class for $22. There are discounts for military, students and anyone buying multi-class passes. The facility has lockers and bathrooms (but no showers). The rest of her was pretty sore, too, thanks to the structure of the studio’s classes. Nelson explains it like this: “You think it’s over and then we up the intensity. It’s not over at all. We’re taking you through peaks and valleys.” When it’s a peak, the coaching kicks in, and instructors rush around the room, offering encouragement and a watchful eye. So although Molly Buford, 40, wanted to cheat her lunges during that Pilates class, she didn’t. “I knew Ingrid would yell at me,” says Buford, who lives in Silver Spring.

Lingo: At some point along the way, every class includes “your ryde,” which is a chance to do whatever your body needs, at your own pace, without thinking about what anyone else in the room is doing. “I like that two minutes to yourself,” Brown says. “I just gun it.” RealRyder bikes at PureRyde can lean, which forces core muscles to activate.

Is giving up drinking hard because it’s a nuisance to be left out of the margarita pitcher, or is it more of an emotional struggle? How ingrained is alcohol in your social life, together and alone? And do you want him not to drink in your presence, or not to drink at all? The former is not unreasonable; the latter deserves a deeper conversation about what you’re really after. I’ve been seeing a great guy for four months, and we’re getting serious. He is very honest, which appeals to me a lot. The problem is I lied to him the night we met. I was with friends, and he asked me if one guy was my ex. I said, “Of course not.” It became a joke, but I really did date that guy, briefly. I feel like he’ll think it’s terrible that I’ve lied to him about it, but I also think it shouldn’t be a big deal. ADVICE, PLEASE!

Four months in is better than six months in, which is infinitely better than at your rehearsal dinner. Is it a huge deal that you briefly dated a friend? No. But if it was important enough for him to ask about it, the truth was presumably important to him as well. A splitsecond mistake is forgivable when corrected with sensitivity. Try this: “Hey — this has been eating away at me. Technically, Sam and I dated briefly, even though I don’t think of him as an ex. I should have corrected it sooner. I’m sorry.”

A Matter of Taste Sweet drinks and flavorful foods need not doom your diet

People trying to slim down always have the same question for James Hill, executive director of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center at the University of Colorado: “Should I drink diet soda?” Hill didn’t have an answer until last week, when his team released the results of a study comparing the effects of water and “non-nutritive sweetened beverages” on participants in a weight-loss program. After 12 weeks, the group that had been consuming 24 ounces of diet drinks a day lost an average of 13 pounds. The group that had been sipping the same amount of water lost only an average of 9 pounds. “I would have bet the farm on no difference,” says Hill, who says he’s skeptical of other research that’s indicated diet soda encourages weight gain. He suspects what tipped the scales was that the diet soda group had a no-calorie way to indulge cravings for sweets. (And to be eligible for the trial, funded by the American Beverage Association, participants had to be diet soda drinkers already.) Chugging a Coke Zero won’t perform miracles, Hill cautions, but it can assist in calorie cutting. And he’s interested in finding similar tools that won’t make weight loss feel like such a, well, loss. Hill visited D.C. last month to attend a “spice summit” hosted by the McCormick Science Institute (a research organization funded by the local corporation that produces Old Bay). He presented the results of another study, which demonstrat-

ed that diners were just as happy with a well-seasoned low-fat lunch as they were with a full-fat version. There was also promising research from Cheryl Anderson, an associate professor at the University of California San Diego, who’d led a behavioral intervention in Baltimore. Her goal was to curb salt intake by teaching participants how to prepare meals relying on options such as smoked paprika, garlic, thyme and rosemary. Instead of reaching automatically for the salt, they found alternatives that suited their tastes, Anderson says. It’s worth pursuing whether the same strategy can be

effective for high-fat or high-sugar diets, too, she adds. The takeaway lesson from this research is “weight loss doesn’t have to mean taste loss,” says dietitian Keith-Thomas Ayoob, of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who attended the summit. The findings, Ayoob says, are in line with what he suggests to everyone who needs to alter eating habits. He suggests spicing things up — sprinkling cinnamon and ginger on apples or stirring cayenne pepper into cottage cheese. (“That’s cottage cheese with testosterone,” he says.) Bored of carrots three nights in a row? Rotate between dill, garlic and mint, he adds. Like Hill, Ayoob frequently finds himself fielding the same question: “Are you going to be the guy who takes away my fun?” Now he feels more confident in answering, “No, I’m going to be the guy who shows you how to have fun in a different way.” VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

Banner Year for Maryland Trails Want a family-friendly trip that’s big on recreation, nature and history? “You don’t have to pack kids in the car and go to the Grand Canyon,” says William Pencek, executive director of the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission. Instead, he recommends visiting Bladensburg Waterfront Park (4601 Annapolis Road, Bladensburg, Md.). It’s the site of Thursday’s double ribbon-cutting for the StarSpangled Banner National Historic Trail (starspangledtrail.net) and the Anacostia Water Trail (anacostiaws .org/anacostia-water-trail). Both routes — which connect

battlefields, boat docks and bird habitats — provide opportunities to get better acquainted with places many Washingtonians zip by in their daily lives. “We want people to experience the river in more ways,” says Lee Cain, director of recreation for the Anacostia Watershed Society, which kicks off its Paddle Nights series on Friday. (That’s the first of 25 free chances to canoe or kayak along the river. See anacostiaws.org.) There’s yet another reason to celebrate on Saturday: National Trails Day (americanhiking.org/national -trails-day). VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

A new study says “Colbert” viewers know more about campaign finance. STUDIES

‘Colbert Report’ Linked To Election Knowledge A study from the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Public Policy Center found that viewers who watched “The Colbert Report” during the 2012 presidential election were more knowledgeable about campaign financing, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Host Stephen Colbert set up a super PAC on the show during the campaign. (EXPRESS) AWARDS

Music Lucy Hale’s fans may be clamoring to know whom she’s singing about in her upbeat “Kiss Me” or her breakup anthem “Goodbye Gone,” but the 24-year-old actress isn’t spilling all her secrets in her debut album. “I’ll never reveal what it’s about,” said Hale, who says she’s enjoying the speculation. “I mean some of it is a little bit obvious, at least obvious to the people that know me the best.” Hale is best known for playing edgy high schooler Aria Montgomery on ABC Family’s popular teen drama “Pretty Little Liars.” (The show’s summer premiere is at 8 p.m. June 10) The Memphis, Tenn., native described her pop-country album, “Road Between,” out today, as “modernized Shania (Twain).” In a recent interview, she said singing feels more scary and vulnerable than acting, but in the end, she found the two-year recording process therapeutic. “The biggest breakthrough you have to make is to be willing to go to those places and to be open about it,” she said. “Throughout the whole process I realized, ‘Wow I really bottle emotions. Like this is good to sing about it. Yeah, scream it!’ ” Hale wanted to be hands-on

Actress Lucy Hale reaches for her country aspirations with her debut album

Lucy Hale prepares for a busy summer, as her show “Pretty Little Liars” returns and she releases her first album.

“The biggest breakthrough you have to make is to be willing to go to those places and to be open about it.” — LUCY H A LE , DISCUSSING HOW BEING VULNERABLE WAS AN ASSET DURING THE WRITING AND RECORDING OF HER NEW COUNTRY ALBUM, “ROAD BETWEEN,” OUT NOW

with the project, so she learned to play guitar and tried her hand at songwriting. She co-wrote one track, “Just Another Song,” and made sure she felt a personal connection to the rest. “It’s all stuff that I’ve gone through. I knew that if I’m sing-

ing someone else’s words it has to be 100 percent something that I felt before.” Hale will fulfill another dream when she performs June 21 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn. She had to cancel an earlier performance due to illness.

Hale said her first love has always been music, and she hopes to continue juggling singing and acting like one of her idols, country music superstar and occasional actor Tim McGraw. “I love what he’s done,” she said. “He’s still selling out arenas, but he’s doing great movies like ‘The Blind Side’ and ‘Country Strong,’ and he’s got a beautiful wife and kids and has all these beautiful homes. So if I could like somehow find a small percentage of what he’s done that would be cool.” NICOLE E VAT T (AP)

From Oscar to Outer Space: The Walt Disney Co. announced Monday that Lupita Nyong’o, left, is joining the cast of “Star Wars: Episode VII.” The 31-year-old actress became a breakthrough star for her award-winning performance in “12 Years a Slave.” Also added to the cast was Gwendoline Christie, best known for playing Brienne of Tarth on HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” The film, which is being directed by J.J. Abrams, is slated to open in December 2015. (AP)

SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ THE SONGS OF LEIBER AND STOLLER

KENZO TRIBOUILLARD (GETTY IMAGES)

Stephen King shows he’s not just a horror writer in ‘Mr. Mercedes’ Book Review The dedication page of Stephen King’s latest novel calls out to noir author James M. Cain, hinting at the nature of the story to come. “Mr. Mercedes” ($30, Scribner) is rooted, firmly and affectionately, in the classic noir tradition and contains none of the supernatural phenomena so prevalent in King’s body of work. The result is a tightly plotted crime novel that retains that essential, instantly recognizable flavor that has distinguished King’s fiction for more than 40 years. The story begins with a prologue set in an unnamed Midwestern city in the spring of 2009. A crowd of desperate job seekers has lined up outside the building where a massive job fair is scheduled. Matters take a horrific turn when a Mercedes sedan emerges from the fog, plowing deliberately into the crowd, killing eight people. Jumping ahead several months, King introduces his hero, Bill Hodges, a recently retired homicide detective who failed to close the case of the Mercedes Killer. He is adrift in a state of pre-suicidal despair when a letter, apparently written by the killer, arrives. Filled with lies and largely misleading clues, the letter spurs him toward an unofficial investigation. Having met the detective, we meet the murderer. Brady Harts-

words and music by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller directed by Randy Johnson | choreographed by Parker Esse

“MAGNIFICENT.”

“Mr. Mercedes” is a straightforward murder mystery from Stephen King.

field has developed a passion for the primal satisfactions of murder, a passion t hat can only escalate. The bulk of the narrative moves smoothly back and forth between a killer planning a major atrocity and the retired detective determined to stop him. Hartsfield moves toward his private apocalypse in a state of steadily increasing isolation, while Hodges, invested with a renewed sense of purpose, makes his way back into the human community. On one level, “Mr. Mercedes,” out today, is an expertly crafted example of the classic race-against-theclock thriller. On another, it is a novel of depth and character enriched throughout by the grace notes King provides in such seemingly effortless profusion. It is a rich, resonant accomplishment by a man who can write in whatever genre he chooses. BILL SHEEHAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Government Scandal? There’s an Oliver Stone Movie for That. Oliver Stone will direct an adaptation of “The Snowden Files,” The Guardian reports.
