Obama Aide to Probe VA Scandal J. SCOTT APPLEWHITE (AP)

Controversy deepens over allegations of mistreated veterans Washington The White House announced Tuesday that it is dispatching one of President Barack Obama’s top aides to investigate deaths allegedly connected to a Department of Veterans Affairs medical center in Phoenix, part of the administration’s efforts to contain growing outrage over delays in treatment and rigged record-keeping at veterans hospitals. Rob Nabors, a White House deputy chief of staff, has been assigned to assist top VA officials in prob-

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Rob Nabors is being assigned to probe the VA .

ing allegations of wrongdoing by staffers at the Phoenix facility and elsewhere. He will be meeting with Arizona hospital officials Thursday after meeting today with several veterans organizations in Washington, the White House said. Republicans have seized on the

recent VA allegations as potential fodder for this fall’s midterm elections, and a few GOP senators have called for the resignation of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki. Obama “has confidence” in Shinseki, according to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, who

added that administration officials will wait for the results of an internal review before taking any action against high-ranking officials. The controversy is particularly acute for Obama, who has joined with first lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, the wife of his vice president, in focusing on veterans’ issues as a hallmark of his administration. The White House has pressed successfully for more federal funding for VA, expanded the list of what qualifies for disability treatment and urged private-sector firms to employ veterans once they return from Iraq and Afghanistan. U.S. Hacking Victims Fell Prey to Mundane Ruses Washington The victims were their own worst enemies. The hacking techniques the U.S. government says China used against American companies turned out to be disappointingly mundane, tricking employees into opening email attachments or clicking on innocent-looking website links. The scariest part might be how successfully it worked. With a mouse click or two, employees at big-name

American makers of nuclear and solar technology gave away the keys to their computer networks. The Justice Department said Monday that five Chinese military officials stole confidential business information, sensitive trade secrets and internal communications for competitive advantage. China denied it all Tuesday. The U.S. says the break-ins were more Austin Powers than James Bond. The hackers are said to have created a fake email account under

the misspelled name of a company director and fooled an employee into opening an email attachment called “agenda.zip,” billed as the agenda to a shareholders’ meeting. It exposed the company’s network. At another time, a hacker allegedly emailed company employees with a link to what appeared to be a report about industry observations, but the link instead installed malicious software that created a back door into the company’s network. Behind His Medal of Honor Who: Cpl. William Kyle Carpenter, 24, now medically retired and a student at the University of South Carolina The news: The White House announced this week that Carpenter will receive the medal of honor on June 19. What he did: While manning a rooftop security post in southern Afghanistan in 2010, Carpenter threw himself on a grenade to protect a fellow Marine. The aftermath: Carpenter lost his right eye and injured his left, both eardrums were blown, most of his teeth were blown out and much of his jaw was missing. His right arm was shattered, his left arm, wrist and hand had multiple breaks, his right lung collapsed and he had shrapnel wounds in his legs. He was a patient at Walter Reed medical center until last July. On the medal of honor: “There are guys who I was with who didn’t come back, so it’s hard for me to wear this and have the spotlight on me the rest of my life when they lost their life on a hot, dusty field in Afghanistan and most people don’t even know their names.” (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Thailand Military Declares Martial Law Bangkok Thailand’s powerful military chief intervened Tuesday for the first time in the country’s latest political crisis, declaring martial law and dispatching gun-mounted jeeps into the heart of the capital with a vow to resolve the deepening conflict as quickly as possible. The move stopped short of a coup and left the nation’s increasingly cornered caretaker government intact, along with the constitution. Despite a steady stream of army edicts throughout the day that

expanded the military’s power and included censorship of news and social media, life continued normally, with residents largely unfazed by the declaration. But the intervention, which follows six months of crippling protests that killed 28 people and injured more than 800, left the country at another precarious crossroads — its fate now squarely in the hands of the military. “The key going forward will be the military’s role in politics,” said

It also followed threats by antigovernment protesters to intensify their campaign to oust the ruling party, and an attack last week on protesters that killed three people and injured more than 20. Metro’s oldest cars date back to its opening in the mid 1970s, and the newest arrived a decade ago. Notice how they all look more or less the same? That’s because Metro wanted aesthetic consistency and mechanical compatibility. But that limited upgrades. Now Metro is about to phase in the 7000 series, which is free from those constraints. By summer 2015, 64 cars are due to be in service (748 by 2018.) On Tuesday, The Washington Post’s Paul Duggan went along for a test ride and live-tweeted it.

cials dubbed a “blitz,” cleared away not just unwanted cans but even some newly delivered ones. And now: It turns out that the city has not been recycling thousands of the cans, as Mayor Vincent Gray’s administration had promised — but chucking them instead. City officials admitted Tuesday that D.C. sanitation crews dumped at least 132 truck loads of plastic bins — a third of the more than 16,000 cans collected last week — alongside city waste and hauled them off to be incinerated in Virginia. A spokeswoman said throwing away the cans was ultimately a safety decision made after streets and alleyways became overly congested. Tuesday’s admission presented a setback to the District’s ongoing effort, after decades of dysfunctional management that solidified a reputation for low-quality city services, to reinvent itself as a

Washington Garbage is a rare subject at your average cocktail party. But in the District, trash — or at least the cans it goes in — is a trending topic. It started with the rush delivery of more than 200,000 shiny new cans before Election Day. That led to the odd problem of trash can proliferation, with old cans waiting weeks to be picked up and streets and alleys overflowing with extra bins. Then there was the arrest and lock-up of a little-known District artist for trying to repurpose (as flower pots) several of the old cans plastered with “Take Me!” signs. And the city’s over-correction of the languishing can problem, which offi-

well-governed place. “It’s an embarrassment, it’s Trash-Can-Gate,” said D.C. Council member Mary Cheh, chairwoman of the committee with oversight of city trash collection. “This is the continuing by-product of a badly initiated, and badly run program,” Cheh said. The monthslong drama has tar-

nished a program to replace, at a cost of $9 million, every city trash and recycling receptacle for the first time in a decade. And it has left several lingering questions: Did a vulnerable mayor accelerate delivery of the cans to secure votes in his unsuccessful bid for re-election? Despite years of planning, how come the city didn’t have a better plan in place to collect the old ones? And will prosecutors really go through with charges against two people for theft of cans that no one wanted? Tuesday’s admission, however, offered the most concrete example to date that the effort had gone off track, and a new round of hand-wringing about government accountability settled in over the Wilson Building. “You can’t make this stuff up,” said D.C. Council chairman Phil Mendelson, who tried to stop Gray’s replacement plan last year. A ARON C. DAVIS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

D.C.’s Golf Courses May Go Upscale Washington

MAKE A DIFFERENCE...with Team In Training and the EventsDC Nation’s Triathlon, to Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. MATT McCLAIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

For more than 60 years, Conrad Deskins has patronized the East Potomac Golf Course, the 36-hole complex on Hains Point. At age 82, his swing is starting to fade a bit. “That won’t stop my enthusiasm,” he said. “Eleanor might.” That’s a nod to House Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who last month renewed a bid to transform one of the city’s three federally owned golf courses — most likely East Potomac, she says — into a “world-class, tournament-quality public course, with playing fees commensurate with such courses.” East Potomac, Langston Golf Course on Benning Road NE and the Rock Creek course off 16th Street NW for decades have been havens of proletarian golf, affordable to those without the means or will to pay country-club dues. But some D.C. politicians see other possibilities. Norton’s bid to

study an upgrade is one of two proposals now being floated. Another plan would transform Langston into a “PGA Championship course.” The golfers who use the courses recognize the need for upgrades, particularly at Langston and Rock Creek. But they are almost universally wary of any plan that would turn their beloved courses into more expensive, more exclusive places. “We’ve got plenty of upscale in

Washington as it is,” said Joe Metzler, a 66-year-old Alexandria retiree who often visits East Potomac. Meanwhile, the National Park Service is beginning to contemplate improvements to the courses. Starting in 2016, all three are expected to be managed under a single contract — one that could include many of the upgrades that patrons have long pined for. MIKE DeBONIS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Commercial Interruption New York’s 9/11 museum is a sacred site — not, some say, a place for selling souvenirs Washington A fire truck with its cab shorn off. Missing-persons fliers. Final voicemail messages. The National September 11 Memorial Museum, which opens today to the public, houses thousands of artifacts from the horrific day. It also holds a gift shop offering hats, books, jewelry and knickknacks for sale. And a cafe. For some, the concept hasn’t gone over well. The New York Post questioned the wisdom in a Sunday story headlined “Little shop of horror.” “It’s crass commercialism on a literally sacred site,” said Kurt Horning, whose son Matthew died on 9/11. “It’s a burial ground. We don’t think there should be those things offered on that spot. “If you want to do it, do it someplace else — but not right there.”

It isn’t unusual for museums that commemorate tragedy to have gift shops, which help cover operational costs. There’s one at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. Arlington National Cemetery has a small store that sells such items as lapel pins, magnets and T-shirts. D.C.’s U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum also has a shop, stocked with books, “Never Again” patches, menorahs and World War II posters. At the Sept. 11 museum, some of the items for sale in the gift shop are clearly intended to tap into the sense of solidarity that emerged after the attacks, including plain black T-shirts that say “honor, remember, reunite.” But others, like a hoodie with the twin towers emblazoned on front, seem more of a painful reminder of what was lost. And some pieces of fire department memora-

bilia — including a doggie vest and toy truck — seem kitschy or trivial. “They’re down there selling bracelets; they’re making money off my dead son,” said Jim Riches, whose firefighter son, Jimmy, died at the World Trade Center on 9/11. In a statement, museum official Michael Frazier said that items in the gift shop were “carefully selected.” He said that the nonprofit museum relies on fundraising, donations and revenue from tickets and keepsakes in order to operate. Admission is $24 but free to victims’ family members and rescue and recovery workers. “Many of our guests from the 9/11 community have visited the shop and purchased a keepsake,” Frazier said in the statement.

“I know it can make people uncomfortable, but the fact is that these museums and memorials need to raise money to operate and do the work they do. They are a not-for-profit, so no one is ‘making money’ off of anyone’s dead loved ones. Besides, it’s a very human thing to want a souvenir when you visit a place important to you. The word itself means to help remember.” — WASHINGTONPOST .COM COMMENTER BEEGRACE123

“It is a little odd, but isn't visiting the site odd to begin with? I only say that because I had the most eerie uncomfortable feeling visiting the Hiroshima museum. I just felt like I shouldn't be in that place, it was heartbreaking. The Hiroshima museum also has a gift shop.” — COMMENTER PEACE86

Memorabilia available at the Sept. 11 museum gift shop includes this plush dog ($20) and T-shirt ($22).

After a recent purchase at D.C.’s Holocaust Museum gift shop, Blossom Zell — who said her father was a Holocaust survivor — said the mementos help “tell the story you just experienced. This was so far in the past. You want to make it real.” And that may be the difference. The Holocaust was more than 70 years ago, and 9/11 is still fresh in many minds nearly 13 years later. Sept. 11 commemorative items have been a part of New York City for years. Noam Freedman, owner of the New York Firestore in lower Manhattan, said he began selling items shortly after the 2001 attacks. He is sympathetic to the struggle that the memorial’s organizers face. But his store is proof that the demand for items that commemorate 9/11 is still strong. “You try to offer something that will appeal to the sensitivities of a broad range of people,” Freedman said. “There’s no way to decide one way or another what’s right and what’s wrong.” ABBY PHILLIP (THE WASHINGTON POST )

From the Eyes of a Family Member Beyond the gift shop, Steve Kandell, whose sister died in the attacks, writes of the whole museum spectacle in the BuzzFeed story “The Worst Day Of My Life Is Now New York’s Hottest Tourist Attraction.” “I think now of every war memorial I ever yawned through on a class trip, how someone else’s past horror was my vacant diversion. … Everyone should have a museum dedicated to the worst day of their life and be forced to attend it with a bunch of tourists from Denmark. Annotated divorce papers blown up and mounted, interactive exhibits detailing how your mom’s

last round of chemo didn’t take, souvenir T-shirts emblazoned with your best friend’s last words before the car crash. And you should have to see for yourself how little your pain matters to a family of five who need to get some food before the kids melt down. Or maybe worse, watch it be co-opted by people who want, for whatever reason, to feel that connection so acutely.”

Making Up for Bad Starts

Late-game heroics help mask the Nats’ first-inning woes

This file handout shows a rendering of the new Vikings stadium.

Nationals

Minneapolis Awarded ’18 Super Bowl

Nationals starting pitchers have placed the team in some precarious situations this season. Washington hasn’t been able to keep opposing teams off the scoreboard early — allowing the most first-inning runs in the majors.

NFL 4:05 P.M.

Before Tuesday night’s game against the Reds, the Nationals had surrendered 42 runs in first innings, eight more than the second-place White Sox. In addition, Washington has given up eight runs in the first inning over the previous 10 games. To put this into context, the Nationals have given up a total of 173 runs in 2014. This means almost a quarter of Washington’s runs allowed have come in the first. Washington’s pitchers improve over the course of games, though. In second innings, the Nationals have given up 24 runs, seventh-most in the league. In third innings, that number drops to 10, which is actually the fourthfewest. The numbers f luctuate until the ninth inning, in which the Nationals have given up only three runs all season, the fewest in baseball. The worst slow starters have been Gio Gonzalez, Stephen Strasburg and Tanner Roark. Gonzalez holds a 12.00 ERA in first innings, allowing 18 hits and two home

runs in nine starts. Strasburg has a 7.20 ERA in first innings with 18 hits and three home runs surrendered in 10 starts. Roark holds a 5.63 ERA in first innings, with seven hits and one home run given up in eight starts. It’s certainly not a way the Nationals prefer to start games. However, Washington’s bats have made up for the early-inning pitching woes. No team has made more comebacks at the plate than the Nationals during the first quarter of the 2014 season. Before Tuesday, the Nationals have recovered from early def-

Even in Monday’s 4-3 loss to the Reds in 15 innings, Washington rallied from a 2-0 deficit, scoring a run apiece in the seventh and ninth innings to tie the game. If the Nationals can fix their first-inning problems, they could prove to be a tough out as the season progresses. “We’ve got to score more runs and play clean baseball,” shortstop Ian Desmond said. “It’s as simple as that.” JASON BUT T (FOR E XPRESS)

Ready to Run: California Chrome arrived in New York on Tuesday to begin preparations for his bid to become horse racing’s first Triple Crown winner in 36 years. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner arrived at Belmont Park after an uneventful four-hour journey by van from Baltimore. California Chrome will start training on the track daily beginning today. The 3-year-old colt is set to run in the Belmont Stakes on June 7. (AP)

Minneapolis will host the 2018 Super Bowl after a vote by owners on Tuesday rewarded the city for getting a new stadium deal. The owners chose Minneapolis and the new $1 billion stadium planned for the site of the old Metrodome to host the championship over New Orleans and Indianapolis. The big game will be staged in the Twin Cities for the second time. The game was there in 1992, when Washington beat Buffalo. Earlier at their spring meetings, NFL owners tabled any vote expanding the playoffs to 14 teams. There is strong sentiment among the owners to add a wildcard team in each conference to the postseason, most likely beginning in 2015. Such a setup would eliminate one of the first-round byes, with only the team with the best record in each conference getting a week off at the beginning of the playoffs. BARRY WILNER (AP)

TV Lineup NBA (9 P.M., TNT) The Spurs’ offense was firing on all cylinders in Game 1, scoring 122 points on 57.5 percent shooting and recording 28 assists. The Thunder clearly miss Serge Ibaka’s presence in the middle as they look to bounce back and even the series at 1-1 tonight in San Antonio.

Sports 7 P.M. Today | CSN D.C. United (4-3-3, 15 points) hosts the Houston Dynamo (5-5-2, 17 points) at RFK Stadium tonight. After an 0-2-0 start to its 2014 campaign, United has lost just once in its last eight contests. The team’s biggest offseason acquisition, Eddie Johnson (above), ended his scoring drought in last weekend’s 1-1 draw against the Montreal Impact. Johnson’s first goal of the season was the equalizer in the 84th minute. United is in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, two points back of Houston and Sporting Kansas City and five points behind the first-place New England Revolution. (EXPRESS)

Ex-Players Suing the NFL Again League is accused of illegally handing out painkillers to athletes NFL Opening another legal attack on the NFL over the long-term health of its athletes, a group of retired players accused the league in a lawsuit Tuesday of cynically supplying them with powerful painkillers that kept them in the game but led to serious complications down the road. T he lawsuit, which seek s unspecified damages, charges the NFL with chasing profits over pro-

tecting its players’ health. To speed injured athletes’ return to the field, the league administered drugs illegally, without obtaining prescriptions or warning of the possible side effects, the plaintiffs contend. Some football players say they were never told they had broken legs or ankles and were instead fed pills to mask the pain. One says that instead of surgery, he was given anti-inflammatory drugs and excused from practices so he could play in games. Others say that after years of free pills from the NFL, they retired addicted to the painkillers. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, in Atlanta for the league’s

spring meetings, said: “We have not seen the lawsuit, and our attorneys have not had an opportunity to review it.”

The case comes less than a year after the NFL agreed to pay $765 million to settle lawsuits from thousands of retired players who accused it of concealing the risks of concussions. The athletes blamed dementia and other health problems on the bone-crushing hits that helped lift pro football to new heights of popularity. The new lawsuit was filed in federal court in San Francisco and names eight players as plaintiffs, including three members of the NFL champion 1985 Chicago Bears: quarterback Jim McMahon, Hall of Fame defensive end Richard Dent and offensive lineman Keith Van Horne. Preston O’Neil has discovered all kinds of clever ways to corral her family’s belongings, thanks to her taste in houses. “I seem to go for every old house in the area with minimal closet space,” says the 35-year-old Alexandria resident and mom of two. “We had one house with a closet that was so shallow it wouldn’t hold adult-sized hangers.” Instead of shelling out for fancy storage solutions, she’s come up with an inexpensive strategy: She puts anything that’s aesthetically pleasing on display, and saves storage in cabinets and drawers for things she doesn’t want to look at all the time. “If I put a bunch of crayons in one jar and glitter sticks in another one, it looks nice and I don’t mind it sitting out on a windowsill,” she says. “Every jar that has a reasonable-sized mouth has been repurposed to hold something.” Whether you live in a cozy city condo or a spacious single-family with a basement, you’ve proba-

But if your bank account or home’s basic footprint can’t support a major renovation like that, it doesn’t take a budget-busting trip to the Container Store to organize all of your stuff. Look around your own home and you’ll likely turn up all kinds of items perfect for storing and stashing. “You can spend several hundred dollars to organize every little bit and piece,” says author Linda Peterson, a Missouri-based creative consultant and designer. “But people don’t realize there are cheaper alternatives right in front of them.”

Navy Yard The Washington Navy Yard has been around since 1799, but the neighborhood that surrounds it and borrows its name from the naval headquarters is bustling like never before. Construction workers have been hammering nonstop around Navy Yard in the past few years, and they have quite a few new office buildings and luxury apartments to show for it. But homes for-sale are fewer and farther between than in leafier neighborhoods, and the neighborhood — bounded roughly by Interstate 395 to the north, South Capitol street to the west, and the Anacostia River to the south and the east — can sometimes feel like a concrete canyon. Still, with more restaurants and entertainment spots opening every year and a red-hot baseball team on its turf, Navy Yard is becoming quite a lively place to live. LIZ ESSLEY WHYTE (FOR EXPRESS)

Navy Yard stands out for its parks, and Nationals Park (1500 South Capitol St. SE; 202-675-6287) tops the list. It wouldn’t be a seventh-inning stretch to say the baseball team is a majorleague draw for many residents. Of course, the neighborhood also boasts traditional green spaces including Canal Park (200 M St. SE), Diamond Teague Park (100 Potomac Ave. SE) and Yards Park (355 Water St. SE). The latter’s fountains, river views, iconic pedestrian bridge, and ample seating for picnickers make it a destination to hang out with friends or to escape outdoors with kids. And the Riverwalk Trail, which runs along the Anacostia and through both parks, is a great place to cycle or go for a jog. The Navy Yard section of the Riverwalk connects to 12 miles of trails that go as far north as Benning Road NE; planners hope to make it eight miles longer, connecting it to the Southwest Waterfront. Interested in really putting that river to use? The Anacostia Boathouse (1900 M St. SE; anacostiaboat house.org), can help you get set up for

Most contain office space and apartments, but buyers have options, too. There are high-rises like The Velocity Condos, completed in 2009 and priced in the $300,000-$500,000 range (1025 First St. SE; 202-8630260; bit.ly/1orVRzG). More than 20 food trucks descend upon the Half Street Fairgrounds (25 M St. SE) once a month between April and September for the “Truckeroo” festival (truckeroodc.com). And new weekly “Front Stage” concerts hosted by the BID will provide mid-day music — including jazz, funk and country and more — every summer Wednesday this year at Tingey Plaza (1 Tingey St. SE). Classes at the Trapeze School in Navy Yard offer a breath of fresh air for the thrill-seekers and Cirque du Soleil wannabes. The open-air Nationals Park offers plenty of fresh air, too, for the thousands of attendees at games during baseball season.

Eating In Navy Yard is more convenient for everyday necessities than it has been in years past. A Harris Teeter will open this year at 1212 Fourth St. SE, and a Whole Foods is slated for 2017 at 800 New Jersey Ave. So Navy Yard dwellers, most of whom currently shop at the Southwest Waterfront’s Safeway (1100 Fourth St. SW; safeway.com), will finally have some closer grocery options.

And more is on the way: 100 Montaditos, a Spanish chain known for its 19th-century taverna ambience, will occupy 300 Tingey St. SE (us.100montaditos.com). Local favorite TaKorean (takorean.com), a food truck that serves tacos with Korean-inspired fillings, will open their very first brick-and-mortar store at 1212 4th St. SE later this year, where their neighbor will be another local favorite: Sweetgreen (sweetgreen.com).

digs Home Organizing

Why to Get Organized

(Cico Books, $24.95), Peterson features projects that find a new purpose for items that could be hiding in your kitchen cabinets: A baking sheet becomes a memo board; plastic cups and a muffin tin transform into a caddy for art supplies. Even things that seem destined for the trash can or recycling bin can be used in new ways. “Everyone has some soup or coffee cans,” Peterson says. “Those can be recycled into creative containers for your desk.” So don’t clean up too quickly after preparing a meal. “We’ve used the little crates that clementines come in, fruit bins from the farmers market, and egg crates for holding art supplies,” says O’Neil. And think twice before getting rid of empty boxes. “Cut the top off of boxes from household supplies like Ziploc bags and use those as drawer dividers,” says Old Town Alexandriabased professional organizer Tiffany Mensing (703-587-9735, space andserenity.com). “Drawer dividers can get expensive, but they make a huge difference in pretty much any drawer you have.” The same goes for Tupperware with lost lids or takeout containers, Stapleton says. Those are also prime to double as catchalls for a hallway closet or your entryway, she says.

Antique crates repurposed in end tables lend a chic, rustic feel to any room in your house.

Go Gaga for Storage If you’ve got any little ones at home, you know that finding a place for all of their toys and other gear can be difficult. Luckily, you probably have a lot of containers that originally held child-care necessities around, too. You can reuse things like a sturdy diaper box or babyfood jars to wrangle some of their stuff — or yours. “Baby-wipe containers are awesome for so many things,” says Upper Marlboro, Md.-based professional organizer Deb Lee (301-502-3835, dallisonlee.com). “They’re not the prettiest to look

Whether you buy a bunch of bins at Bed Bath & Beyond or turn your trash into organizing treasure, there are plenty of benefits to getting clutter under control. “It makes your whole existence better,” says Vienna-based professional organizer Nealey Stapleton. “Getting organized saves you time and money. You’re not buying the same thing multiple times because you can’t find it. You’re not late because you can’t find something. You’re more productive and on top of things.” And it’s not just the folks who live in cramped condos who need a smart storage plan. “If you have the space and want to keep 10,000 widgets, go for it,” says Upper Marlboro, Md.-based professional organizer Deb Lee. “But be sure you can find the widget you want when you want it to avoid an hourslong scavenger hunt.” Otherwise, everything you own might be causing you more trouble than it should. “Disorganization clutters not only your space but also your mind and time, because you have to filter through everything to get to what you really need,” says Old Town Alexandria-based professional organizer Tiffany Mensing. “Having a home that functions for you as opposed to against you really makes a huge difference.” B.L.

at, but you can wrap them in some pretty paper and they’re great for pens, kids’ art supplies, and the little, tiny things that infiltrate your home, like screws or nails, that you don’t know what to do with.”

Get Crafty With a little DIY magic, something totally utilitarian can boast both flair and function. Peterson uses fabric, ribbons, paint and other materials to give her repurposed pieces a custom look. In her hands, a lowly toilet paper roll becomes an attractive wrap for keeping cords from getting tangled. “If you’ve

taken the time and feel good about what you’ve made, you’re more personally invested in it and more apt to be organized,” she says. But if you don’t know how or where to begin, don’t worry. Starting small can often be the best approach. “First organize one tiny little part of your house, like a drawer,” says Stapleton. “That one thing will kind of open the door and lead to the next thing.” Before you know it, you’ll be using empty shoe boxes and jars to create a place for everything in your home. BETH LUBERECKI (FOR E XPRESS)

Ready, Set, Recycle With very little work, you can infuse these household items with new life and purpose.

Baby wipe containers are great for storing little things. Wrap them in paper to stylishly upcycle them.

Clementine or other fruit crates make organizing easy and frugal, and add a little rustic flair, too.

Coffee or soup cans, stripped of labeling and scrubbed up, can serve as containers for your desk.

Amanda Peet to Release Children’s Picture Book

RECEPTIONS

Critics Slam Gosling’s Directorial Debut Film Ryan Gosling debuted as a film director on Tuesday for one of the most packed crowds at the Cannes Film Festival. “Lost River” is a baroque fairy tale set in Detroit that stars Christina Hendricks and Matt Smith. Immediate reaction from critics was largely negative. Variety’s Scott Foundas called it a “first-rate folie de grandeur.” (AP)

“I want to be in the band, but I just don’t want to be the frontman.” — STE V EN SODERBERGH, TELLING GQ MAGAZINE THAT DESPITE HIS DIRECTING RETIREMENT, HE IS STILL INVOLVED WITH “MAGIC MIKE X XL” AS DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM EDITOR

It’s hard to see “Ghost Stories” as anything other than a breakup album for Chris Martin, second from right.

PETER OHS

Random House Children’s B ooks announced Tuesday that it will release “Dear Santa, Love Rachel Rosenstein,” Peet a picture book that actress-playwright Amanda Peet collaborated on with her friend Andrea Troyer. Publication is set for fall 2015. The story revolves around a young Jewish girl who wonders why Santa doesn’t visit her house. (AP)

Nothing to Smile About Coldplay’s new album ‘Ghost Stories’ is by far its gloomiest, and also its weakest Album Review “Ghost Stories” is Coldplay’s first album since lead singer Chris Martin’s separation from Gwyneth Paltrow launched a thousand conscious uncoupling jokes. Some of the best albums in history have been born out of such domestic strife. But for Coldplay, an album full of gloomy songs about love gone wrong is in itself unremarkable — the band was making divorce albums before anybody actually got married. “Ghost Stories” is stripped-down and slippery, a pointed de-escalation from their last album, “Mylo Xyloto.” Both incredibly popular and intensely disliked, “Mylo Xyloto”

Breakup Mixtape “Ghost Stories” includes more than a few winks to the infamous “conscious uncoupling.”

On “Magic,” Martin suggests that the divorce may not have been as mutual as we thought. “And I just got broken/ broken into two/ still I call it magic/ when I’m next to you,” he croons. Not very GOOP-friendly! “When I’m rolling with the punches/ and hope is gone/ leave a light, a light on,” he implores on “Midnight.” Maybe Gwen installed some energy-efficent low-wattage light bulbs and he’s still bitter about it. “A Sky Full of Stars” shows that Chris is OVER IT. “I don’t care, go on and tear me apart,” he insists. Aw, Chris, cheer up! At least you can finally give up kale now. (E XPRESS)

inflated the band’s basic formula — ringing anthems, earnest-but-vague lyrics — to the point of absurdity. In its preference for acoustic ballads instead of stadium-ready electro-pop, “Ghost Stories” is a retrenchment, a conscious return to the relative simplicity of the band’s debut, “Parachutes.” There’s a great exercise in Technicolor dubstep-like pop courtesy of Avicii (“A Sky Full of Stars”), but everything else feels like a retreat. It’s as if Coldplay has decided they want to be less like U2 in 1991 and more like Coldplay in 2001, as if no time had elapsed, and no real artistic progress had been made, in the years since. There is less of a sense of puffedup grandeur than any of the band’s recent outings, but grandeur was something Coldplay did well, if too often. These spartan songs — intimate and quiet — lay bare every weakness of songwriting.

Lyrically, “Ghost Stories” is fascinating (in theory, at least) for the same reasons it’s so vicariously depressing. This isn’t Coldplay’s usual conspicuous mopery; this is a public bloodletting: “True Love” is a raw, synth-driven mid-tempo ballad about the disintegration of a relationship, driven by Martin’s spectral falsetto (“Tell me you love me/ If you don’t, then lie”). The similarly themed “Ink,” loping and percussive, feels like something Jack Johnson might make if he were British and sad all the time. Its lyrics read like bad “Twilight” fan fiction (“All I know/ Is that I’m lost/ In your fire below”). As a piece of art, “Ghost Stories” is an exercise in frustrated potential. As a historical document of a celebrity divorce as a slow-motion car crash, it’s not much either, but it’s the best we have. ALLISON STEWART (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Call It ‘Run II: Solange Strikes Again’ Fans launched a petition Monday pleading Beyonce and Jay Z to make a full-length movie based on their short video “Run.” The musicians released “Run” in the style of a fake action movie trailer, featuring cameos from actors Don Cheadle, Blake Lively and Sean Penn. The video was meant as a teaser for their “On the Run” tour, which begins next month. (AP)

“Anyway, at the top of HSH.com’s study is Cleveland, where you only need to earn $29,788.67 annually to buy a home there. Let’s all move to Cleveland!” — MATT COHEN AT DCIST.COM suggests

a change of scenery for any prospective D.C. homebuyers. According to a recent survey by the mortgage site HSH.com, a $78,000 salary is necessary for an individual to afford a median-priced home in the District. That’s up from $63,000 from the same survey just four months ago. The median price of a D.C. home is $358,900.

“But even if what we saw last night was far from perfect, there’s no question that it was rare, and important, and long overdue.” — ANUPA MISTRY AT THECONCOURSE .DEADSPIN.COM found the debut of

NBC’s “The Maya Rudolph Show” Monday night a little wince-inducing and some of its gut-level humor beneath its well-established star. She believed, though, it was a step in the right direction to see a beloved female comedian on a variety-hour format program between primetime and latenight, a role usually only filled by men.

“I don’t know why we expected better from a company … that, given the chance to update [its] mascot, decided that what he needed was new pants and a different jacket, not to stop being a terrifying clown.” — ALEXANDRA PETRI AT WASHINGTONPOST.COM/BLOGS /COMPOST isn’t surprised that

Oregon joined states including Virginia, Oklahoma and Texas where similar bans have been overturned by federal courts.

Buzzfeed knows what it’s doing. Its vice president of communications told Poynter on Monday that the news organization has posted 22,500 pieces of content “about or including cats” since it started in 2006. Buzzfeed editor-inchief Ben Smith said that he’d “anticipate more of both” cat and noncat coverage in the future.

Aren’t Secret Videos Sort Of Beyonce’s Thing Now?

Former Reality Star Is Actually Not Into Big Egos

Radar Online reports that though Kim Kardashian insisted her wedding to Kanye West next week will not be televised, she will secretly record the ceremony. A source says Kardashian will tell guests that her own videographers will be filming, when in fact it’s a crew for her reality show, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” (EXPRESS)

Despite reports that Paris Hilton and Justin Bieber had a secret rendezvous after partying at a Cannes nightclub, a source tells TMZ that Hilton was never alone with him. A group of 50 people returned to Bieber’s house for an after party, and Hilton left after half an hour. The source says Hilton was annoyed by Bieber playing his own songs at the gathering. (EXPRESS)

This Occasional Model Feels Self-Conscious for Photos? Great.

And yet no one was offended by Macklemore’s poor imitation of a bird.

Robert Pattinson told The New York Post that he’s avoiding having his photo taken. “As I get older, I just get more and more and more self-conscious about getting photographed,” Pattinson said. “I don’t know why. I’ve done it too many times and now I feel like everyone can see through me.” (E XPRESS)

Macklemore posted an apology on his website Monday, saying he didn’t mean to mock Jewish people by wearing a costume that some say was anti-Semitic during a performance at the EMP Museum in Seattle last week. Photos from the concert show Macklemore wearing a black wig and beard and a fake hooked nose. The rapper wrote that he randomly chose the pieces of the costume he wore at Friday’s performance so that he could disguise himself and move freely around during the secret show. He also wrote on Twitter on Monday, “A fake witches nose, wig, and beard = random costume. Not my idea of a stereotype of anybody.” (AP)
