The hacking techniques the U.S. government says China used against American companies turned out to be disappointingly mundane, tricking employees into opening email attachments or clicking on innocent-looking website links. The scariest part might be how successfully it worked. With a mouse click or two, employees at big-name
American makers of nuclear and solar technology gave away the keys to their computer networks. The Justice Department said Monday that five Chinese military officials stole confidential business information, sensitive trade secrets and internal communications for competitive advantage. China denied it all Tuesday. The U.S. says the break-ins were more Austin Powers than James Bond. The hackers are said to have created a fake email account under
the misspelled name of a company director and fooled an employee into opening an email attachment called “agenda.zip,” billed as the agenda to a shareholders’ meeting. It exposed the company’s network. At another time, a hacker allegedly emailed company employees with a link to what appeared to be a report about industry observations, but the link instead installed malicious software that created a back door into the company’s network. William Kyle Carpenter, 24, now medically retired and a student at the University of South Carolina The news: The White House announced this week that Carpenter will receive the medal of honor on June 19. What he did: While manning a rooftop security post in southern Afghanistan in 2010, Carpenter threw himself on a grenade to protect a fellow Marine. The aftermath: Carpenter lost his right eye and injured his left, both eardrums were blown, most of his teeth were blown out and much of his jaw was missing. His right arm was shattered, his left arm, wrist and hand had multiple breaks, his right lung collapsed and he had shrapnel wounds in his legs. He was a patient at Walter Reed medical center until last July. Thailand Military Declares Martial Law Bangkok Thailand’s powerful military chief intervened Tuesday for the first time in the country’s latest political crisis, declaring martial law and dispatching gun-mounted jeeps into the heart of the capital with a vow to resolve the deepening conflict as quickly as possible. The move stopped short of a coup and left the nation’s increasingly cornered caretaker government intact, along with the constitution. Despite a steady stream of army edicts throughout the day that

Metro’s oldest cars date back to its opening in the mid 1970s, and the newest arrived a decade ago. Notice how they all look more or less the same? And now: It turns out that the city has not been recycling thousands of the cans, as Mayor Vincent Gray’s administration had promised — but chucking them instead. City officials admitted Tuesday that D.C. sanitation crews dumped at least 132 truck loads of plastic bins — a third of the more than 16,000 cans collected last week — alongside city waste and hauled them off to be incinerated in Virginia. A spokeswoman said throwing away the cans was ultimately a safety decision made after streets and alleyways became overly congested. Tuesday’s admission presented a setback to the District’s ongoing effort, after decades of dysfunctional management that solidified a reputation for low-quality city services, to reinvent itself as a

well-governed place. “It’s an embarrassment, it’s Trash-Can-Gate,” said D.C. Council member Mary Cheh, chairwoman of the committee with oversight of city trash collection. “This is the continuing by-product of a badly initiated, and badly run program,” Cheh said. The monthslong drama has tar-
nished a program to replace, at a cost of $9 million, every city trash and recycling receptacle for the first time in a decade. And it has left several lingering questions: Did a vulnerable mayor accelerate delivery of the cans to secure votes in his unsuccessful bid for re-election? Despite years of planning, how come the city didn’t have a better plan in place to collect the old ones? And will prosecutors really go through with charges against two people for theft of cans that no one wanted? Tuesday’s admission, however, offered the most concrete example to date that the effort had gone off track, and a new round of hand-wringing about government accountability settled in over the Wilson Building. “You can’t make this stuff up,” said D.C. Commercial Interruption New York’s 9/11 museum is a sacred site — not, some say, a place for selling souvenirs Washington A fire truck with its cab shorn off. Missing-persons fliers. Final voicemail messages. The National September 11 Memorial Museum, which opens today to the public, houses thousands of artifacts from the horrific day. It also holds a gift shop offering hats, books, jewelry and knickknacks for sale. And a cafe. For some, the concept hasn’t gone over well. The New York Post questioned the wisdom in a Sunday story headlined “Little shop of horror.” “It’s crass commercialism on a literally sacred site,” said Kurt Horning, whose son Matthew died on 9/11. “It’s a burial ground. We don’t think there should be those things offered on that spot. “If you want to do it, do it someplace else — but not right there.”
It isn’t unusual for museums that commemorate tragedy to have gift shops, which help cover operational costs. There’s one at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. Arlington National Cemetery has a small store that sells such items as lapel pins, magnets and T-shirts. D.C.’s U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum also has a shop, stocked with books, “Never Again” patches, menorahs and World War II posters. At the Sept. 11 museum, some of the items for sale in the gift shop are clearly intended to tap into the sense of solidarity that emerged after the attacks, including plain black T-shirts that say “honor, remember, reunite.” But others, like a hoodie with the twin towers emblazoned on front, seem more of a painful reminder of what was lost. And some pieces of fire department memora-
bilia — including a doggie vest and toy truck — seem kitschy or trivial. “They’re down there selling bracelets; they’re making money off my dead son,” said Jim Riches, whose firefighter son, Jimmy, died at the World Trade Center on 9/11. In a statement, museum official Michael Frazier said that items in the gift shop were “carefully selected.” He said that the nonprofit museum relies on fundraising, donations and revenue from tickets and keepsakes in order to operate. Admission is $24 but free to victims’ family members and rescue and recovery workers. “Many of our guests from the 9/11 community have visited the shop and purchased a keepsake,” Frazier said in the statement.
“I know it can make people uncomfortable, but the fact is that these museums and memorials need to raise money to operate and do the work they do. They are a not-for-profit, so no one is ‘making money’ off of anyone’s dead loved ones. Besides, it’s a very human thing to want a souvenir when you visit a place important to you. After a recent purchase at D.C.’s Holocaust Museum gift shop, Blossom Zell — who said her father was a Holocaust survivor — said the mementos help “tell the story you just experienced. This was so far in the past. You want to make it real.” And that may be the difference. The Holocaust was more than 70 years ago, and 9/11 is still fresh in many minds nearly 13 years later. Sept. 11 commemorative items have been a part of New York City for years. Noam Freedman, owner of the New York Firestore in lower Manhattan, said he began selling items shortly after the 2001 attacks. He is sympathetic to the struggle that the memorial’s organizers face. The big game will be staged in the Twin Cities for the second time. The game was there in 1992, when Washington beat Buffalo. Earlier at their spring meetings, NFL owners tabled any vote expanding the playoffs to 14 teams. There is strong sentiment among the owners to add a wildcard team in each conference to the postseason, most likely beginning in 2015. tecting its players’ health. To speed injured athletes’ return to the field, the league administered drugs illegally, without obtaining prescriptions or warning of the possible side effects, the plaintiffs contend. Some football players say they were never told they had broken legs or ankles and were instead fed pills to mask the pain. One says that instead of surgery, he was given anti-inflammatory drugs and excused from practices so he could play in games. Navy Yard The Washington Navy Yard has been around since 1799, but the neighborhood that surrounds it and borrows its name from the naval headquarters is bustling like never before. Construction workers have been hammering nonstop around Navy Yard in the past few years, and they have quite a few new office buildings and luxury apartments to show for it. But homes for-sale are fewer and farther between than in leafier neighborhoods, and the neighborhood — bounded roughly by Interstate 395 to the north, South Capitol street to the west, and the Anacostia River to the south and the east — can sometimes feel like a concrete canyon. Still, with more restaurants and entertainment spots opening every year and a red-hot baseball team on its turf, Navy Yard is becoming quite a lively place to live. LIZ ESSLEY WHYTE (FOR EXPRESS)
Navy Yard stands out for its parks, and Nationals Park (1500 South Capitol St. SE; 202-675-6287) tops the list. It wouldn’t be a seventh-inning stretch to say the baseball team is a majorleague draw for many residents. A Harris Teeter will open this year at 1212 Fourth St. SE, and a Whole Foods is slated for 2017 at 800 New Jersey Ave. So Navy Yard dwellers, most of whom currently shop at the Southwest Waterfront’s Safeway (1100 Fourth St. SW; safeway.com), will finally have some closer grocery options.

Even things that seem destined for the trash can or recycling bin can be used in new ways. “Everyone has some soup or coffee cans,” Peterson says. “Those can be recycled into creative containers for your desk.” So don’t clean up too quickly after preparing a meal. “We’ve used the little crates that clementines come in, fruit bins from the farmers market, and egg crates for holding art supplies,” says O’Neil. And think twice before getting rid of empty boxes. “Cut the top off of boxes from household supplies like Ziploc bags and use those as drawer dividers,” says Old Town Alexandriabased professional organizer Tiffany Mensing (703-587-9735, space andserenity.com). “Drawer dividers can get expensive, but they make a huge difference in pretty much any drawer you have.” The same goes for Tupperware with lost lids or takeout containers, Stapleton says. Nothing to Smile About Coldplay’s new album ‘Ghost Stories’ is by far its gloomiest, and also its weakest Album Review “Ghost Stories” is Coldplay’s first album since lead singer Chris Martin’s separation from Gwyneth Paltrow launched a thousand conscious uncoupling jokes. Some of the best albums in history have been born out of such domestic strife. But for Coldplay, an album full of gloomy songs about love gone wrong is in itself unremarkable — the band was making divorce albums before anybody actually got married. “Ghost Stories” is stripped-down and slippery, a pointed de-escalation from their last album, “Mylo Xyloto.” Both incredibly popular and intensely disliked, “Mylo Xyloto”

On “Magic,” Martin suggests that the divorce may not have been as mutual as we thought. “And I just got broken/ broken into two/ still I call it magic/ when I’m next to you,” he croons. Not very GOOP-friendly! “When I’m rolling with the punches/ and hope is gone/ leave a light, a light on,” he implores on “Midnight.” Maybe Gwen installed some energy-efficent low-wattage light bulbs and he’s still bitter about it. “A Sky Full of Stars” shows that Chris is OVER IT. “I don’t care, go on and tear me apart,” he insists. Aw, Chris, cheer up! At least you can finally give up kale now. (E XPRESS)
inflated the band’s basic formula — ringing anthems, earnest-but-vague lyrics — to the point of absurdity. In its preference for acoustic ballads instead of stadium-ready electro-pop, “Ghost Stories” is a retrenchment, a conscious return to the relative simplicity of the band’s debut, “Parachutes.” There’s a great exercise in Technicolor dubstep-like pop courtesy of Avicii (“A Sky Full of Stars”), but everything else feels like a retreat. It’s as if Coldplay has decided they want to be less like U2 in 1991 and more like Coldplay in 2001, as if no time had elapsed, and no real artistic progress had been made, in the years since. There is less of a sense of puffedup grandeur than any of the band’s recent outings, but grandeur was something Coldplay did well, if too often. These spartan songs — intimate and quiet — lay bare every weakness of songwriting.
Lyrically, “Ghost Stories” is fascinating (in theory, at least) for the same reasons it’s so vicariously depressing. This isn’t Coldplay’s usual conspicuous mopery; this is a public bloodletting: “True Love” is a raw, synth-driven mid-tempo ballad about the disintegration of a relationship, driven by Martin’s spectral falsetto (“Tell me you love me/ If you don’t, then lie”). The similarly themed “Ink,” loping and percussive, feels like something Jack Johnson might make if he were British and sad all the time. Its lyrics read like bad “Twilight” fan fiction (“All I know/ Is that I’m lost/ In your fire below”). As a piece of art, “Ghost Stories” is an exercise in frustrated potential. As a historical document of a celebrity divorce as a slow-motion car crash, it’s not much either, but it’s the best we have. ALLISON STEWART (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Macklemore posted an apology on his website Monday, saying he didn’t mean to mock Jewish people by wearing a costume that some say was anti-Semitic during a performance at the EMP Museum in Seattle last week. Photos from the concert show Macklemore wearing a black wig and beard and a fake hooked nose. The rapper wrote that he randomly chose the pieces of the costume he wore at Friday’s performance so that he could disguise himself and move freely around during the secret show. He also wrote on Twitter on Monday, “A fake witches nose, wig, and beard = random costume. Not my idea of a stereotype of anybody.” (AP)
