Five kittens that stowed away on a 400-mile trip to San Diego are seeking homes. The kittens wound up inside a 60-foot steel column that was trucked from Hayward to San Diego. On April 24, workers building new offices heard meows coming from the column. They tilted it and the week-old kittens slid out. The kittens are in foster care and will be ready for adoption soon. They’ve been named Crowbar, Rebar, Chisel, Jackhammer and Piper. (AP)

A Florida Goodwill store got a donation it didn’t need or expect — a grenade. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said workers found the grenade in a donation bin Wednesday afternoon and called 911. TCPalm reported that the bomb squad arrived and the Port St. Lucie store was evacuated. The grenade was found to be inoperable. A similar grenade was found at a nearby Goodwill store last year. (AP)

Staff at a U.S. Air Force base in Florida had to bring in a front-end loader to remove an alligator that was lounging on a runway. The Tampa Bay Times reported the large reptile was spotted Tuesday at MacDill Air Force Base. The base shared a photo on Facebook, saying the friendly alligator was just “preparing for take-off.” The wing safety office’s wildlife manager removed the gator by scooping it into the bucket of the loader. page three Giant windows into their world CULTURE Marni Manning was raised to assume the best in others. It was well-intentioned, but trusting in others has also led to her being betrayed. She doesn’t want to get into the details. But there is pain in her voice when she talks about it. “I’ve been so trained to be accommodating that I’m not considering what ... I want or what’s good to me,” she said. But Manning said she’s making some changes to stand up for herself and cut the negative parts of her life out. Manning explained all this a couple of Monday mornings ago near a wall along the Metropolitan Branch Trail, just north of the NoMa Metro station. It’s an urban path that’s separated from the Metro tracks by concrete and barbed wire. Occasionally someone jogs or bikes by. The day before, Manning had

drawn a sketch on the wall of a woman whose long hair is on fire. With giant scissors, the figure cuts off her hair before the flames can get any closer. “I’ve discovered that to keep oneself safe you should cut away the parts of your life that might cause you harm,” Manning said, as she painted the flame red, and the hair purple, like her own. Manning’s mural, which was finished last week, is surrounded by six others on that section of the trail. They are among 16 created in the NoMa neighborhood for Pow! Wow! DC, the local version of an annual international mural painting festival. The new murals add color to gray blank walls, and provide a window into the minds and lives of the people laboring over them. About fifty yards from the blazing hair, the dueling ideas that are often on Sarah Jamison’s mind were appearing on the wall. Jamison thinks a lot about memes and the other images that bombard us on the internet. She said she’s inspired by the fact that new bits of that art appear on her phone every day. But

she’s not completely comfortable with how these images are ubiquitous and may even have the power to disrupt our democracy. The meme-inspired images she painted on the wall, of Homer Simpson, and hearts signifying “likes,” seemed random, much like what appears on social media.

They seemed lighthearted, and inconsequential, like what you share with friends. Jamison stood on tiptoes on a stepladder. She wanted them to be giant, she said, so they would be “very literally looming over, and dwarfing people as they walk by.” KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

Embassy squatters arrested Venezuelan president’s supporters had been living there for weeks

Four activists were arrested Thursday at the Venezuelan embassy in D.C.

J. LAWLER DUGGAN PHOTOS (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT Four activists who have been living inside the Venezuelan Embassy for more than a month were arrested by federal law enforcement officers Thursday morning and forcibly removed from the building. The embassy in Georgetown has for weeks been the site of a standoff between supporters of embattled President Nicolás Maduro and backers of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who has been recognized by the United States and about 50 other nations as interim president. Carlos Vecchio, the Guaidóappointed ambassador who has been recognized by the U.S. government, tweeted that his diplomatic mission would take control of the embassy Thursday. “The usurpation has ended,” Vecchio said in a statement issued in Spanish. “It has taken time and effort, but we have complied with the Venezuelan people. Infinite thanks to the Venezuelan diaspora for their sacrifice. Next liberation: Venezuela.” But Carlos Ron, deputy foreign minister for the Maduro government, tweeted Thursday that U.S. officials entering the building “is an unlawful breach of the Vienna Convention,” an international treaty that created a legal framework for diplomacy between countries.

Supporters of Venezuela’s opposition leader cheered the activists’ arrests.

A State Department spokesperson said federal agents removed four individuals, “including members of a group called Code Pink, individuals calling themselves the Embassy Protection Collective, and members of

$855M

a group called the Popular Resistance.” They were arrested for interfering with the State Department’s protective functions, officials said. Code Pink organizers identified the four activists arrested as

Kevin Zeese, Margaret Flowers, Adrienne Pine and David Paul. Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, cofounder of the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, which has been providing legal assistance to the Code Pink activists, said “federal law enforcement officials broke into the embassy.” She said federal officers who removed the activists were executing an arrest warrant that was issued Wednesday. “Instead of leaving the government of Venezuela up to the people of Venezuela, you now have the U.S. government deciding for the people of Venezuela who their leadership will be, and handing over an embassy compound to their designated representative,” Verheyden-Hilliard said after Thursday’s arrests. For weeks, Guaidó supporters have congregated outside the embassy to demand that demonstrators living inside vacate the building. None of the occupiers were Venezuelan, according to organizers — a fact that riled members of the Venezuelan community in Washington. “This is first and foremost a strong rejection of Nicolás Maduro, and to see a group of Americans, an NGO, support him so strongly just got a visceral reaction from us,” said pro-Guaidó demonstrator Dilianna Bustillos. “We wanted to get out here and say what they were saying out the embassy window, our embassy’s window, did not represent the wishes of the Venezuelan people.” MARISSA J. President Trump wants to move the annual fireworks celebration in D.C.

Bowser criticizes Trump’s 4th plan Holiday changes would be logistical nightmare, District’s mayor warns THE DISTRICT D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, said she opposes President Trump’s plan to put himself at the center of a redesigned Fourth of July celebration in the nation’s capital, expressing concerns about what could be major logistical changes and the resulting strain on police and emergency services. During an interview Thursday, Bowser said she would prefer that the event on the Mall — which has not undergone wholesale changes to its planning since the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 — remain in its current format. “We are very happy to host the nation’s fireworks here every year and over the years it’s become a pretty well-oiled machine,” Bowser said. “That is our primary concern: How do people have a good time, celebrate and be safe on the Mall and getting home.” The Washington Post reported last week that Trump wants to overhaul the nation’s premier

Independence Day event, which attracts hundreds of thousands of people and is broadcast live on national television. The president wants to move the massive fireworks display from its usual place on the Mall and perhaps deliver a speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The president’s appearance would require moving the fireworks to a new location. Federal officials said the likely new launch spot would be West Potomac Park, less than a mile southwest of the usual location near the Washington Monument. That could require a new police presence in that area, Bowser said, as well as additional security to cover the president’s movements. “If we have to put more police to cover his movements, more police for the fireworks and an additional location for police where the fireworks are going to get set off, that puts a strain on us,” Bowser said. “We won’t allow it to impact neighborhood safety. So the chief will have to think about if he needs additional resources.” PETER JAMISON AND PETER HERMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT As part of an exhibit this month at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, there are 30 photographs of people who have been groped or otherwise sexually harassed, nearly all of them on Metro. Nearby, Margaret Wroblewski, a 24-year-old graduate student and aspiring photojournalist, sat at a table Wednesday reflecting on how she’d changed since she took the first of the series of pictures a year and a half ago. “I’m more paranoid now,” she said. And a little less naive. She hadn’t known what to expect when she started the project. She did know that this kind of thing happens. She’d experienced it herself. But the groping, vulgar remarks, exhibitionist masturbation and worse weren’t talked about much, kept underground both literally and figuratively. Making the portraits, she hoped, would show that these things aren’t being imagined. They’re tangible, real. “I feel like in the beginning I was naive and I didn’t understand how big of a problem this is,” she said. These days, she no longer sits at window seats on the train, where she can be trapped by a man sitting in the aisle seat. “I always stand near kids or a family,” she said. “I try not to take the Metro super late anymore, but sometimes I have to.”

Even when the photographs come down, Wroblewski said she’ll keep adding to them on Instagram. She wants to find other places to show the pictures too — maybe at a Metro station. She wants to take pictures of those who have had the same kinds of things happen to them on the subways of other cities, to show it happens there as well. That’s because she learned another lesson when some fellow students dismissed her subject as not worthy of being documented: Her work isn’t done. KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

A panel next to the Rev. Sanders’ picture describes the response she got after the man exposed himself: “I went up to Alexandria police officers and told them what happened. One of the officers started laughing. He asked, ‘Did you see it? What size was it?’ They did not do anything to help me.” Metro occasionally makes arrests for public masturbation. Amazon unveils building plans for new Va. HQ Amazon submitted preliminary plans Wednesday for its new headquarters in Arlington County, announcing it will build 2.1 million square feet in a pair of 22-story office towers that meet high energy-efficient and environmental standards and include a public plaza and storage for 200 bicycles. In a blog post, Amazon Vice President John Schoettler said the company is looking for “a sense of place … an urban campus that will allow our employees to think creatively, to be a part of the surrounding community, and to remain connected to the region’s unique culture and environment.” (Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos also owns The Washington Post and Express.) Some 50,000 square feet of retail space is planned, to include a day-care center serving employees and area residents. Just over an acre of open space will feature a dog park and a bicycle path that connects with existing bike paths. Despite early reports of Amazon’s interest in creating a helipad at its second headquarters, no landing site was mentioned in the blog post. The headquarters site, now home to vacant warehouses between 13th Street South and 15th Street South along Eads Street, was originally planned as a residential-retail project called Metropolitan Park. But when she explains what happened to her on the Red Line, the words come matter-of-factly and without emotion. “A man masturbated directly in front of me. He was staring directly at me,” she said. “I’ve become very numb to these stories.” She’s heard so many of them now. One of the photos in the exhibit, called Next 2019 and featuring the work of Wroblewski and other graduating students, is of a woman in a clerical collar. On Wroblewski’s website, which has more details about the photographs than is presented in the small panels on the gallery wall, are the Rev. Dawn Sanders’ words: “I was on the Metro when … a man next to me made a comment about my dress. In that moment, you are thinking that is odd,” it reads. “Out of the corner of my eye the man had exposed himself and was masturbating. I realized what was happening and I ran to the call box at the far end of the Metro car. In that moment, he began chasing me. …” Wroblewski shot the portraits in places where her subjects said they’d be comfortable. Sanders is standing in front of the stainedglass windows of a church. In another photo, a gentlelooking young man sits on a dorm bed in D.C. When he was 17, he fell asleep on a train in Philadelphia and awoke to a man taking his picture and touching his crotch. “I didn’t think I was going to get any submissions from men,” Wroblewski said. Frustrated by his advisers, Trump is not convinced that the time is right to attack Iran

CHICAGO

Pregnant woman slain; baby cut from her womb

JABIN BOTSFORD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NATIONAL SECURITY The Trump administration has been on high alert in response to what military and intelligence officials have deemed specific and credible threats from Iran against U.S. personnel in the Middle East. But President Trump is frustrated with some of his top advisers, who he thinks could rush the U.S. into a military confrontation with Iran and shatter his longstanding pledge to withdraw from costly foreign wars, according to several U.S. officials. Trump prefers a diplomatic approach to resolving tensions and wants to speak directly with Iran’s leaders. Disagreements over assessing and responding to the recent intelligence — which includes a directive from Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, that some American officials interpret as a threat to U.S. personnel in the Middle East — are also fraying alliances with foreign allies, according to multiple officials in the United States and Europe. Trump grew angry last week and over the weekend about what he sees as warlike planning that is getting ahead of his own thinking, said a senior administration official with knowledge of conversations Trump had regarding national security adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “They are getting way out ahead of themselves, and Trump is annoyed,” the official said. “There was a scramble for Bolton and Pompeo and others to get on the same page.” Bolton, who advocated regime change in Iran before joining the White House last year, is “just in a different place” from Trump, although the president has been a fierce critic of Iran since long before he hired Bolton. Trump

National security adviser John Bolton and President Trump are at odds over how to handle tensions with Iran.

“wants to talk to the Iranians; he wants a deal” and is open to negotiation with the Iranian government, the official said. “He is not comfortable with all this ‘regime change’ talk,” which to his ears echoes the discussion of removing Iraqi President Saddam Hussein before the 2003 U.S. invasion, said the official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations. When asked about the accounts of Trump’s frustration with Bolton, National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis said, “This reporting doesn’t accurately reflect reality.” Trump is not inclined to respond forcefully unless there is a “big move” from the Iranians, a senior White House official said. Still, the president is willing to respond forcefully if there are American deaths or a dramatic escalation, the official said. Trump denied any “infighting” related to his Middle East

What’s caused alarm? Pentagon and intelligence officials said that three distinct Iranian actions have triggered alarms: information suggesting an Iranian threat against U.S. diplomatic facilities in the Iraqi cities of Baghdad and Irbil; U.S. concerns that Iran may be preparing to mount rocket or missile launchers on small ships in the Persian Gulf; and a directive from Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and regular Iranian military units that some U.S. officials have interpreted as a potential threat to U.S. military and diplomatic personnel. On Wednesday, the State Department ordered nonessential personnel to leave Baghdad and Irbil. (TWP)

policies in a tweet on Wednesday. In Tokyo on Thursday, visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tehran was exercising “maximum restraint.”

Five states — Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, West Virginia and Wisconsin — announce opioid lawsuits

“We believe that escalation by the United States is unacceptable and uncalled for,” Zarif told his Japanese counterpart, Taro Kono. U.S. and European officials said there are disagreements about Iran’s ultimate intentions and whether the new intelligence merits a more forceful response than previous Iranian actions. Some worry that the renewed saber-rattling could create a miscalculation on the ground, said two Western officials familiar with the matter. And Iran’s use of proxy forces, the officials said, means it does not have absolute control over militias, which could attack U.S. personnel and provoke a devastating U.S. response that in turn prompts a counter-escalation. Bolton warned in a statement last week that “any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force.” JOHN HUDSON , SHANE HARRIS, JOSH DAWSEY AND ANNE GEARAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A pregnant woman who had gone to a Chicago home in response to a Facebook offer of free baby clothes was strangled and her baby cut from her womb, police said. The newborn was in grave condition and not expected to survive. The body of 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez was found early Wednesday, more than three weeks after she disappeared. Three people were taken into custody, including a woman who pretended the baby was hers, police said. (AP) NORWAY

Mediation underway in Venezuelan crisis Diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving Venezuela’s crisis accelerated Thursday as the government and opposition sent envoys to talks in Norway. Details about the initiative, including whether envoys from opposing camps would even negotiate directly, were scarce. Tensions in Venezuela exploded into street violence after the opposition called in vain for a military uprising April 30. (AP)

nation+world New calculation aims to provide a snapshot of students’ challenges

EDUCATION When students send colleges their SAT scores in coming years, the admissions office will also get another number that rates the level of adversity applicants typically face — or privilege they enjoy — based on crime and poverty data and other demographic information about neighborhoods and high schools. Officials for the College Board, a nonprofit organization that owns the SAT, described the score Thursday. The “overall disadvantage level,” known in admission

circles as the “adversity score,” will be a single number from 1 to 100. With 50 set as the average, under a formula established by the College Board, higher scores will indicate higher adversity. Colleges will see the number on a template called an “environmental context dashboard.” According to the College Board, the adversity score formula will consider median family income, crime reports, housing circumstances, college attendance rates and parental education — but not race or individual data about a student’s family or financial circumstances. Critics say high school grades are a stronger measure of potential than standardized tests, an argument that has led a growing

number of colleges to stop requiring applicants to submit scores from the SAT or the rival ACT admission test.

Robert Schaeffer, public education director of the National Center for Fair & Open Testing, a group critical of the College Board, said the adversity score is a ploy to defend the SAT against “well-documented critiques” of the harm caused by relying too much on admission tests. “This latest initiative concedes that the SAT is really a measure of ‘accumulated advantage,’ ” Schaeffer said in a statement. Fifty colleges and universities tested the dashboard in the most recent admissions cycle. The College Board said Thursday it plans to expand the program in the coming year and make it broadly available starting in 2020. NICK ANDERSON

SHANGHAI | Members of a rescue team carry out a victim after a building collapsed on construction workers Thursday in downtown Shanghai. The city’s rescue service said 24 emergency vehicles and more than 150 personnel responded to the collapse.

TRANSPORTATION A Tesla Model S involved in a fatal crash with a semitrailer in Delray Beach, Fla., on March 1 was operating on the company’s semi-autonomous Autopilot system, federal investigators have determined. The car drove beneath the trailer, killing the driver, in a crash that is strikingly similar to one that happened in north Florida in 2016 that also involved use of Autopilot. In both cases, neither the driver nor the Autopilot system stopped for the trailers, and the roofs of the cars were sheared off. The latest crash, which remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, raises questions about the effectiveness of Autopilot, which uses cameras, long-range radar and computers to detect objects in front of the cars to avoid collisions. The system also can keep a car in its lane, change lanes and navigate freeway interchanges. Tesla has maintained that the system is designed only to assist drivers, who must be ready to intervene. In a preliminary report on the March 1 crash, the NTSB said that data and video from the Tesla show that the driver turned on Autopilot about 10 seconds before the crash. From less than eight seconds until the time of the crash, the driver’s hands were not detected on the steering wheel. TOM KRISHER (AP)

Hackers charged in global attacks U.S., European officials: Tens of thousands lost more than $100M total NATIONAL SECURITY Ten people, including five Russian fugitives, have been charged in connection with malicious software attacks that infected tens of thousands of computers worldwide and caused more than $100 million in financial losses, U.S. and European authorities announced Thursday. The malware enabled criminals from Eastern Europe to take remote control of infected computers and siphon funds from victims’ bank accounts, and targeted companies and institutions across all sectors of American life. Victims included a Washington law firm, a church in Texas, a furniture business in California and a Pennsylvania asphalt and paving business. Several defendants are awaiting prosecution in Europe, and five are Russians who remain fugitives in that country. An 11th participant in the conspiracy was extradited to the U.S. from Bulgaria in 2016 and pleaded guilty last month in a related case in federal court in Pittsburgh, where Thursday’s indictment was brought. American authorities did not seek the immediate extradition of all 10 defendants. POLITICS The Environmental Protection Agency should consider recovering nearly $124,000 in improper travel expenses by former EPA chief Scott Pruitt, the agency’s inspector general recommended Thursday. The findings, issued nearly a year after Pruitt resigned amid controversy over his spending, highlight the fiscal impact of his penchant for high-end travel and accommodations. Investigators concluded that 40 trips Pruitt either took or scheduled between March 1 and Dec. 31, 2017, cost taxpayers $985,037. The bulk of those expenses were for Pruitt’s round-the-clock security detail, which billed $428,896 in travel costs. The agency spent an additional $339,894 on staffers traveling. The “questioned amount” the IG’s office identifies for possible recovery is the $123,941 taxpayers spent on flying both Pruitt and a security agent in first or business class, instead of coach. It appears unlikely the EPA will recover the funds, but there is a precedent for a Trump Cabinet member to reimburse taxpayers. A day before resigning, thenHealth and Human Services Secretary Tom Price said he wrote a check to the U.S. Treasury for $51,887.31 to offset charter and military flights he took in 2017. However, that agency’s IG later urged recovery of at least $341,000 from Price. JULIET EILPERIN AND BRADY DENNIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Green card plan favors ‘top talent’

Trump’s 2018 financial report is a mixed bag

IMMIGRATION Setting aside some of his hardline rhetoric on illegal immigration, President Trump said Thursday that he wanted to recruit “top talent” to the nation as he unveiled his latest efforts to reform residency laws after years of setbacks and stalemates. “We discriminate against genius,” Trump said of current policies, which he contended excessively favor family-based immigration. “We discriminate against brilliance. We won’t anymore once we get this passed.” The latest effort, spearheaded by Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, focuses on beefing up border security and rethinking the nation’s green card system so that it would favor people with high-level skills, degrees and job offers instead of relatives of those already in the country. The proposed shift to a more merit-based system prioritizing high-skilled workers would mark a dramatic departure from the nation’s largely family based approach, which officials said gives roughly 66% of green cards to those with family ties and 12% based on skills. The president’s plan, unveiled in a Rose Garden ceremony, has yet to be embraced by his own party — let alone Democrats — and faces dubious prospects in a divided Congress. The show of magnanimity comes as Trump

seeks to put a softer facade on the signature campaign issue from his first campaign as he eyes his 2020 reelection. “Our plan is pro-American, pro-immigrant and pro-worker,” Trump said, adding that it contrasts with what he called Democrats’ support of “chaos.” He predicted the plan would help lead him to victory next November. Efforts to overhaul the immigration system have gone nowhere for three decades amid deep partisan divisions. Prospects for an agreement seem especially bleak as the 2020 elections near, though the plan could give Trump and the GOP a proposal to rally behind, even as Democrats signaled their opposition. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Trump’s emphasis on meritbased immigration is “condescending” because families have merit, too. The plan does not address what to do about the millions of immigrants already living in the country illegally, including hundreds of thousands of young “Dreamers” brought to the U.S. as children — a top priority for Democrats. Nor does it reduce overall rates of immigration, as many conservative Republicans would like to see. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said “Dreamer” immigrants were not included in Trump’s new plan because past proposals involving them

Trumps’ plan, unveiled in a Rose Garden ceremony, has yet to be embraced by his own party and faces dubious prospects in a divided Congress.

“I don’t think it’s designed to get Democratic support as much as it is to unify the Republican Party around border security.” SEN. LINDSEY GRAHAM, R-S.C., saying the GOP can rally behind President Trump’s immigration plan

have failed. Administration officials said the plan would create a pointsbased visa system, similar to those used by Canada and other countries, and the U.S. would award the same number of green cards as it now does. But far more

would go to exceptional students, professionals and people with high-level and vocational degrees. Factors such as age, English language ability and employment offers would also be considered. The diversity visa lottery, which offers green cards to citizens of countries with historically low rates of immigration to the U.S., would be eliminated. As part of the plan, officials want to shore up ports of entry to ensure all vehicles and people are screened and to create a self-sustaining fund, paid for with increased fees, to modernize ports of entry. The plan also calls for building a border wall in targeted locations and continues a push for an overhaul to the U.S. asylum system, with the goal of processing fewer applications and removing people who don’t qualify faster. POLITICS President Trump’s financial disclosure report Thursday showed revenue held steady last year at several of his properties — including his Washington hotel and Doral golf resort — despite a turbulent presidency that has buffeted his brand. But Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla., saw revenue drop 10%. Trump’s Doral golf course and club in Miami took in the most among his golf properties, generating about $76 million in revenue last year, about $1 million more than in 2017. Trump’s Washington, D.C., hotel near the White House, a magnet for lobbyists and foreign interests, generated nearly $41 million, up less than half a million from last year. Meanwhile, Mar-a-Lago took in nearly $23 million, a drop of more than $2 million. A full tally for Trump’s overall businesses for 2018 was not immediately available. He took in $453 million in 2017. The report, released by the Office of Government Ethics, also showed that Trump’s debt increased over the past year by $10 million, to at least $315 million. While Trump has refused to release his tax records, he has been filing the less-specific financial disclosure reports since he began running for president. They list revenues rather than profits, and many figures are given in ranges rather than specific dollar amounts. BERNARD CONDON AND STEPHEN BRAUN (AP)

Improbable is favored to win Saturday at the Preakness Stakes.

A no-name field: Top horses run from Preakness The middle jewel of the Triple Crown is tarnished. Saturday’s Preakness Stakes won’t have the Kentucky Derby’s disqualified winner, Maximum Security, seeking redemption. His owner is too busy sulking and litigating. Nor will awarded Derby winner Country House, who has a breathing problem, come to the Preakness. Runner-up Code of Honor and third-place Tacitus are ignoring Baltimore, too. It’s the worst Preakness field in decades just one year after Justify became the second colt in four years to sweep the Triple Crown. Only four Derby runners ventured to Old Hilltop in the field of 13.

Pimlico Race Course will be filled with pretenders, since none of the top horses entered. Derby fourth-place finisher Improbable should be a heavy Preakness favorite since there are few credible challengers. What happened to create such a mess? A perfect confluence of events has stripped thoroughbred racing’s spring classics of all their momentum. Churchill Downs stewards overreacted to a common racing mishap, cowering in the pressure of a worldwide Derby audience. It was like being exiled from a city for jaywalking. Gary West, owner of Maximum Security, disqualified for interfering with another runner, showed poor sportsmanship by immediately bypassing the Preakness. He

should have entered the colt to win the Preakness and prove he’s the nation’s best 3-year-old, and maybe even capture the Belmont Stakes on June 8, too. If a court challenge eventually awards Maximum Security the Derby victory, we will never know if he could have won the Triple Crown. And without Maximum Security, racing lacks a credible Preakness contender. Country House reportedly has a breathing problem and will be the first Derby winner to skip the Preakness since Grindstone was injured during

his 1996 Derby triumph. I suspect Country House’s owners know the colt ran his best race ever after winning just one of his first six starts and can only lose value as a future stallion with every loss. They don’t want to prove the Derby was a fluke by losing the Preakness. It’s hard to be excited over the Preakness. This is the worst field since 2014, when California Chrome beat eight nobodies, with only Bayern later distinguishing himself. The 2000 Preakness saw only two Derby runners, and newcomer Red Bullet upset Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus. There is no standout in this Preakness. Surely, Improbable will be the choice after finishing fourth at 4-1 odds, but he’s never been especially impressive. Win Win Win will get some respect for his local connections after placing ninth in the Derby. War of Will might try to steal it early after fading badly for seventh in the Derby. In the end, this Preakness will be best remembered for being forgettable. Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. Follow him on Twitter @Snide_Remarks

Brooks Koepka broke the course record Thursday at Bethpage Black with a 7-under 63.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP | FRIDAY: 1-7:30 P.M. (TNT); SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: 11 A.M.-2 P.M. (TNT); 2-7 P.M. (CBS)

Koepka breaks records on Day 1 of title defense He takes a 1-shot lead with 63; putting woes leave Woods with a 72 FARMINGDALE, N.Y. Brooks Koepka had the biggest stage all to himself, with Tiger Woods at his side. At times overlooked even after winning three majors in the last two years, Koepka gave thousands of fans a round to remember Thursday morning at brawny Bethpage Black with a recordsetting start to his title defense in the PGA Championship. Koepka delivered a 7-under 63, making him the first player in 101 years of the PGA Championship to shoot that score twice. He broke the course record at Bethpage Black and became the first player to post 63 at a major in consecutive years.

It gave him only a one-shot lead when Danny Lee birdied his last two holes in the afternoon for a 64. “That was one of the best rounds I’ve played probably as a professional,” Koepka said. “This golf course is brutal.” It felt that way to Woods, who was along for the ride. Fresh off his emotional Masters victory, Woods opened with a pair of double bogeys on the back nine, and ruined a torrid start to the front nine with a pair of threeputt bogeys. It added up to a 72, leaving him nine shots behind and ending 12 consecutive rounds at par or better in the majors. Make no mistake: A gallery that trudged through muddied walkways to the 10th tee in the early morning was there primarily for Woods, who created a new era of Tigermania with his stirring comeback following

four back surgeries to win a 15th major. What they saw was a major performance by Koepka. So special was his round, even on a course still soft from rain earlier in the week, that only six other players from the 78 who played in the morning broke par. Tommy Fleetwood had the next best score from that group at 67. Woods managed to get under par, but only briefly. A birdie-birdie start to the front nine, and a 30-foot eagle putt on the par-5 fourth, brought Woods to 1 under. And then he bogeyed three of the next four holes. “I fought my way back around there, and unfortunately, I just didn’t keep it together at the end,” he said. The way Koepka played, none of that would have mattered anyway. DOUG FERGUSON (AP)

Going down in flames? TELEVISION By this point, it’s clear that many — if not most — “Game of Thrones” fans aren’t pleased with the speedy conclusion of the HBO show’s eight-season story. Given how beloved and acclaimed the drama has been for nearly a decade, that’s surprising in and of itself. But even more shocking is that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss seem to have anticipated the backlash — and that fans are actually enjoying making fun of the final season, which concludes with Sunday’s series finale. In “Inside the Episode,” behind-the-scenes segments that air immediately after each episode, Benioff and Weiss often address the very moments that have become bull’s-eyes for controversy. They sometimes feel like a defense of the show, as if the creators realized they would have a lot to explain to their rabid fan base. One of the most criticized scenes this year was also one of the most unexpected, and not in a positive way. It came in the fourth episode, as protagonists Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow and others head to King’s Landing to demand Queen Cersei’s surrender. The villainous Euron Greyjoy and the Iron Fleet appear, catching everyone off guard. Euron fires off a few projectiles, which kill Rhaegal the dragon. After the episode, fans revolted online, primarily wondering two things: Since when are dragons so easy to kill, and why didn’t Daenerys expect the attack? The showrunners addressed this minutes after the credits rolled. “While Dany kind of forgot about the Iron Fleet and Euron’s forces, they certainly haven’t

forgotten about her,” Benioff said in the “Inside the Episode” segment, an explanation that was panned by fans so much that it became a running joke. This isn’t a stand-alone incident. In the next episode, Daenerys breaks bad and decides to use her remaining dragon to torch King’s Landing, innocent citizens and all. While her turning into the Mad Queen fits the story — the writers dropped clues along the way — many said it happened far too quickly.

The number of people who had signed a Change.org petition asking HBO to “remake ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 with competent writers,” as of Thursday afternoon. “This series deserves a final season that makes sense,” the petition says. “Make it happen, HBO!” The hit show’s series finale airs at 9 p.m. Sunday on HBO. (EXPRESS)

As the criticism began rolling in, the cycle repeated itself. “I don’t think she decided ahead of time that she was going to do what she did,” Weiss said. “It’s in that moment, on the walls of King’s Landing, when she’s looking at that symbol of everything that was taken from her, when she makes the decision to make this personal.” “Game of Thrones” has long trafficked in surprise and spectacle. Truly unexpected moments such as the Red Wedding or jawdropping productions such as the Battle of the Bastards kept fans hanging around digital (and, who knows, maybe even actual) water coolers long into the week after the eventful episodes. But that positivity has faded. With Season 8, it has been the criticisms of an episode, and the criticisms of those criticisms, that have left people talking: The show’s “current breakneck pace is gutting its most anticipated reunions,” the Verge declared. “ ‘Game of Thrones’ simply gave up,” Esquire cried. The critics of the critics think everyone needs to chill out and enjoy the ride, but this Sisyphean debate just keeps going and going. One fan recut the Rhaegal death scene to make it more believable. On Reddit, the video received nearly 60,000 upvotes and garnered nearly 3,000 comments, many of which praised the editing job. “Over 100 million dollar budget and 2 years of production, some random person on the internet edits a scene better,” one user wrote. Regardless, given that last week’s episode was the mostwatched in series history, drawing 18.4 million viewers, one thing can’t be debated: Those critiques aren’t actually hurting HBO. TRAVIS M. The ‘Thrones’ endgame was long foretold Over eight seasons, “Game of Thrones” has offered many hints of what’s to come. As the show ends, let’s take stock: Which prophecies were fulfilled, and which could still come to fruition? ELAHE IZADI (TWP) Maggy the Frog In a Season 5 flashback, a witch named Maggy the Frog told Cersei her future. “You’ll be queen, for a time,” she says. “Then comes another — younger, more beautiful — to cast you down.” That came true: While Cersei was queen, another, “younger, more beautiful” — Daenerys — did cast her down.

Eyes staring back Back in Season 3, Melisandre grabs Arya Stark’s face and proclaims: “I see a darkness in you, and in that darkness, eyes staring back at me. Brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. Eyes you’ll shut forever.” Arya has since made many kills, including the brown-eyed Walder Frey and the blue-eyed Night King.

Cleganebowl In Season 7, the Hound tells his zombie sibling, the Mountain: “You know who’s coming for you. You’ve always known.” This was a pretty obvious setup for their fight to the death — widely billed as Cleganebowl — that finally happened this past weekend.

Iron Throne visions Images of a barren and perhaps snowy Iron Throne room have popped up a few times. Maybe the snow references Jon Snow taking the throne, which could still happen. Some fans suggest it’s a throne room covered in ash rather than snow, which would sync up with last weekend’s fiery destruction of King’s Landing.

For now, it’s just raining rain on John Wick (Keanu Reeves), but you can expect blood soon.

A blood-soaked beaut

The third ‘John Wick’ flick is pretty nasty business, but it moves in all the right ways

FILM REVIEW “Do what you do best, John.” That tidbit of wisdom — delivered late in “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum” to the title character — is good advice for anyone, really, if also not terribly deep. But then again, neither is the film. This third installment in the popular, and ridiculously pleasurable, franchise about a professional assassin (Keanu Reeves) who does little besides kill and try not to be killed elevates violent action to an art form. There is so much of it, and it is so decisive, constant and committed, that it almost becomes a form of abstract movement, like ballet. Director Chad Stahelski, a former stuntman who has overseen all three John Wick films, surely knows this. There are scenes in the new film that take our hero back to the dance academy/martial arts school where he once trained. There he meets a mysterious Russian woman (Anjelica Huston), who calls him “Jardani,” and they speak of a “ticket,” in the form of a crucifix attached to a rosary-like string of beads. (If

this is an origin story, it raises far more questions than it answers.) As young ballerinas rehearse onstage, we watch male combatants engage in hand-to-hand combat in backstage gymnasiums. The Wick films are best appreciated not so much as story but as pure choreography, albeit one in which the dancers are stabbed in the eye socket, kicked in the head by horses, bitten in the crotch by German shepherds or shot with a high-powered weapon, leaving a sudden plume of blood and brain matter on the screen before John moves on to the next pas de deux. There is just enough story here

to give the brutality shape and purpose. “Parabellum” picks up precisely where “Chapter 2” left off: with John on the run. After the organization to which the

assassin belongs has declared him “excommunicado” — banned for killing a man on the grounds of an off-limits hotel that caters exclusively to a clientele of killers — he must flee from a host of hit men who want a piece of the $14 million bounty that has been placed on his head. This flight takes him to the aforementioned Russian, then Casablanca, where he meets a resentful ex-partner (Halle Berry), and finally to someone in the middle of the desert known as the Elder (Saïd Taghmaoui). The Elder sends John back to the scene of his crime for more of the same. Helping the savagery go down is the film’s clever world-building, which constructs a retro, noirish universe in which business-suited murderers live and work side by side with normal people. “Parabellum” is, arguably, a nasty piece of work. But, like its hero, it knows what it does best, and it does it — however paradoxical this may sound — beautifully. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘All Is True’ PG-13, 101 min.

Kenneth Branagh plays William Shakespeare contemplating the end of his career in “All Is True,” an intriguing speculative drama about the playwright’s final years. Directed by Branagh, this flight of fancy never succumbs to what-if-ism for its own provocative sake. Using the facts as guardrails, the filmmakers concoct a credible, if not verifiable, narrative that invites as much healthy skepticism as credulity. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

‘The Biggest Little Farm’ PG, 91 min.

“The Biggest Little Farm” chronicles the exploits of Molly and John Chester, who bought 200 acres for a farm envisioned as an Eden of organic food production, ecological restoration and environmental diversity. Filmed over eight years, the documentary captures the triumphs and defeats of the enterprise with arresting intimacy. A.H.

Bailey really gets around in “A Dog’s Journey,” spending time with, from left to right, CJ (Kathryn Prescott), Trent (Henry Lau) and Ethan (Dennis Quaid).

Dog bites it. Over and over. The mean, manipulative ‘Journey’ is a tear-jerker that doesn’t even try FILM REVIEW “A Dog’s Journey” tries to prove that it’s possible to make an uplifting movie in which a dog dies — repeatedly. That’s not a spoiler; it’s literally the plot of the film. “Journey” rests on the same conceit as its 2017 predecessor, “A Dog’s Purpose.” In both films, based on best-selling books by W. Bruce Cameron, a dog named Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad) gets repeatedly reincarnated, each time to protect someone important. The previous film focused on a character named Ethan. Now it’s Ethan’s granddaughter, CJ (Kathryn Prescott). We first meet her as a toddler (Emma Volk), living with her

grandparents (Dennis Quaid and Marg Helgenberger), whose son was killed in a car accident before CJ was born. The son’s widow, Gloria (Betty Gilpin), lives with her daughter CJ — rather tensely — on the family farm. When a major conflict arises, Gloria and CJ head to Chicago, where Gloria is planning to pursue a singing career. Through the course of four lifetimes and various dog breeds and genders, Bailey is always there to protect CJ from danger, including a less than desirable home life and abusive boyfriends. There’s nothing wrong with a good cry at the movies. But “A Dog’s Journey” is a bad cry — emotionally manipulative and, well, just mean. Because the story belongs to Bailey, we have to watch him die, over and over. Although there are some nice scenes between Gloria and the adult CJ

‘A Dog’s Journey’ (PG, 108 min.) DIRECTOR: Gail Mancuso STARS: Marg Helgenberger, Betty Gilpin, Henry Lau, Dennis Quaid IN A NUTSHELL: As beloved dog Bailey’s soul moves on from one life to another, he has an adventure filled with love and friendship. Aww.

(as well as with the tween version, played by Abby Ryder Fortson), how can we appreciate them if there’s always this looming sense of doom? Is it even possible to enjoy Gad’s charming performance while we’re waiting for the next time Bailey goes to doggy heaven — a place that looks like the field Russell Crowe glowered over in “Gladiator”? A movie should earn our tears.

“Up” did it with a near-silent opening montage that covered the span of a married life in just minutes. Here, nearly all the characters are underwritten. When it comes to Gloria, it’s just vicious. In the end, the script falls back on an old trope: She’s a bad mother because she drinks too much wine, wears leather pants and has her own headshots hanging on the wall. The love we share with our canine companions is one of the simplest emotions there is, and to build an entire film around manipulating that love is lazy storytelling. If you want to cry at the movies, “A Dog’s Journey” will achieve that. If you want to have a satisfactory cry — one that comes from empathy and not cheap emotional manipulation — stay home and watch “Up.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘The Sun Is Also a Star’ is better than its title FILM REVIEW With a title that reads like a line of bad teenage love poetry and a plot that involves a series of improbable coincidences, “The Sun Is Also a Star” seems as if it wouldn’t appeal to many beyond the target demographic of its source material: a 2016 youngadult novel by Nicola Yoon. But you don’t have to be a lovesick adolescent to fall, just a little, for its goofy energy. The movie’s premise is timely, if overheated: 17-yearold Natasha (Yara Shahidi of “Grown-ish”) was born in Jamaica but lives with her undocumented immigrant family in Brooklyn. Daniel (Charles Melton of “Riverdale”) is a first-generation Korean American who loves to write poetry, though his father wants him to go to med school. Over the course of a day in New York City, these two beautiful young people from wildly different cultures fall in love. But there’s a catch: Natasha’s family is to be deported the next day. Can she get the court to reverse the decision? Will Daniel put aside his dream to pursue the profession his father wants for him? All this may sound ridiculous on paper, but director Ry RussoYoung (“Before I Fall”) somehow manages to sell this madness. If this heart-pounding romance doesn’t make you cry, its sorely needed sense of optimism will surely make you smile. PAT PADUA (TWP)

“Congrats to Chris Underwood. He played the hand he was dealt and took advantage of the theme, so you can’t blame him.” @ADAM_RIEDY, supporting the controversial winner of “Survivor: Edge of

Extinction.” Underwood was the third person voted out and thus sent to this season’s twist: a desert island where evicted players waited for a chance to get back in the game. After rejoining the tribe and finding an immunity idol, Underwood seemingly coasted to the final three and ended up winning Season 38. Many fans thought competitor Gavin Whitson deserved the win, though others said Underwood’s journey summed up the “Extinction” twist.

DIFFICULT

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Season 6 is going to be awkward … A “Fresh Off the Boat” source told Page Six that star Constance Wu is “the most hated person on set.” “She is rude to everybody,” the source added. Wu grabbed headlines this week when she reacted negatively to the news that the ABC comedy had been picked up for a sixth season, later clarifying that she was “temporarily upset” because the renewal forced her to give up on another project.

Ellie rediscovers love for vast amounts of money Ellie Goulding said Wednesday on the ITV show “This Morning” that she nearly left the music business after releasing her 2015 album “Delirium.” “It just got to a point a few years ago where I really just had to just go away from it all,” she said. “I thought for a second, ‘Maybe I could just quietly go away.’ But I’ve rediscovered my love for writing.” (EXPRESS)

“I love normalizing the dimples in my butt or the lumps in my thighs.”

Karamo Brown told E! News that he and “Queer Eye” costar Antoni Porowski used to have an “extreme amount of conflict.” “We did not talk to each other at all during Season 1, even though we were shooting together,” Brown said. “The minute that camera stopped rolling, [I thought], ‘Girl don’t come near me.’ And vice versa — he didn’t want me to come near him.” Brown didn’t get into specifics regarding their feud but said it was because a “third party got involved.” Brown noted that he and Porowski are now friends, having reconciled after an hourlong conversation.
