A New Mexico woman is facing charges after she told an officer, “I don’t think so” and fled. Court documents show Ricci Barnett was arrested April 21. An officer had tried to pull over Barnett, 41, for driving the wrong way on a one-way street in Las Cruces. The officer made contact with Barnett as she stopped at a red light. When the officer showed her his badge, she said, “I don’t think so,” and drove off. She was eventually taken into custody. (AP)

An escaped pet corn snake that got into a Chicagoarea family’s washing machine ended up smelling like fabric softener after going through the wash. Sanela Kamencic said she was “totally creeped out” when the snake turned up in her washing machine last week. Animal Control Warden Jason Pound said it “smelled like Downy” after surviving the wash cycle. The snake, named Penelope, belongs to a 12-year-old boy who lives nearby. (AP)

A waiter in New York City returned a cashier’s check for $424,000 to the retired social worker who lost it. Armando Markaj found it while cleaning a table last week at Patsy’s in East Harlem. He ran outside, but the customer was gone. The restaurant’s owner called the Daily News for help. A “relieved” Karen Vinacour retrieved her check on Wednesday. The money had come from her apartment sale. Vinacour had not tipped Markaj after her meal. (AP)

EDUCATION The letter landed in email inboxes early in May and since then, students, parents and graduates of Washington’s prestigious Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School have talked of little else. Sister Mary Berchmans, the school’s president emerita, authored the letter that has provoked so many reactions. In her carefully worded missive, Berchmans said the 220-year-old Catholic girls academy will publish announcements of same-sex unions in its alumnae magazine. Some called the decision, which stands in contrast to official church teaching on gay marriage, “beautiful” and “overdue.” In some quarters, there was unhappiness that it took so long for the school to reach this point, while a smaller number expressed anger that the school was veering from Catholic doctrine. The school’s decision followed a push last month by several hundred graduates who learned of a fellow alumna who was told a

teaching on same-sex marriages. But, it is equally clear in its teaching that we are all children of God, that we each have dignity and are worthy of respect and love,” she wrote. The Archdiocese of Washington said in a statement it was not made aware of the school’s decision before the letter from Berchmans was sent. Christina Peters, a 1980 Visitation graduate who is gay and married her partner nine years ago, said she was profoundly moved by Visitation’s decision. “To see the school stand with gay and lesbian students and parents and families, I just felt really emotional and grateful,” Peters said. Some Visitation graduates in the Facebook discussion believe the letter from Berchmans should be used as a springboard for the school to address additional issues of diversity, inclusion and equity. “This stirred up a lot of pain for some people,” said Elizabeth Early, a 1992 graduate who lives in Washington. “It kind of created a big storm beyond just the awareness and acknowledgment of gay marriage. We need to look at what more the school can do.” JOE HEIM (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Md. improves access to care

Gov. Hogan signs a first-in-nation measure to help the uninsured

MARYLAND Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan signed a first-in-the-nation measure Monday to make it easier for people without health insurance to find out if they qualify for low-cost insurance after they file their taxes. The new law will create a box for people to check on state income tax returns. If a taxpayer checks the box, the state’s health care exchange will see if the person qualifies, based on information in the tax return. Those who qualify for Medicaid will be enrolled automatically. The exchange will reach out to people who qualify for private coverage. Hogan, a Republican, highlighted bipartisan work in the

68%

General Assembly, which is controlled by Democrats, on other health-related measures he signed Monday. One of them raises the smoking age from 18 to 21 and includes vaping in the definition of tobacco products. “We are also proud to continue Maryland’s record of leadership on health care by enacting legislation to further improve access and lower costs,” Hogan said. Sen. Brian Feldman, a Democrat, said the measure is part of a response to efforts at the federal level to overturn the Affordable Care Act, including the end of the mandate requiring people to have insurance or else pay a penalty. The Maryland measure initially included a provision that would have revived the individual mandate in Maryland, but with a twist: The uninsured would have had the choice of paying a tax penalty or making a down payment on

Bills to help families

Maryland is enhancing its tax credit for working parents, allowing families who earn up to $141,000 to claim at least part of the state’s child care tax credits, up from the previous threshold of $50,000. It’s one of several laws Gov. Larry Hogan, R, signed Monday that were crafted to help mothers, including enhancing jail time for violent crimes committed against pregnant women and several initiatives aimed at reducing the number of women who die during pregnancy or childbirth. (TWP)

health insurance. That provision was taken out of the bill. “We’ve been continuing to look for bipartisan ways to get more Marylanders health insurance,” Feldman said. “We’ve made a lot of strides. About six or seven years ago, we had about 760,000

people without health insurance. Now, we’re down to 360,000, and in light of what’s happening at the federal level — the dismantling of the Affordable Care Act, the elimination of the mandate — we’re starting to see some backtracking on that.” Stan Dorn, who is director of the National Center for Coverage Innovation, estimated there are tens of thousands of Maryland residents who do not have health insurance who are eligible for lowcost insurance but don’t know it. “The problem of millions of Americans being uninsured but eligible for help has escaped notice, and today Democrats and Republicans in Maryland have come together to find practical innovative solutions to help lower people’s health care costs and get more people the financial security that comes with health insurance,” said Dorn. POLL: METRO’S REPUTATION ON THE UPSWING

The proportion of D.C.-area residents who rate Metrorail positively, up from 42% in 2017, according to a Washington Post-Schar School poll. The results suggest that the transit agency’s intensive efforts to upgrade the system’s performance, begun in 2016, have restored much of the public confidence lost in earlier years amid chronic problems with safety and reliability. But the news isn’t all good: The survey also found that 40% of residents say they ride Metro less than they did five years ago. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Flood mitigation plan picked for Ellicott City Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, D, has selected a five-year flood mitigation plan for Ellicott City, Md., that includes building a tunnel and tearing down four buildings in the historic district. The plan, which officials estimate will cost $113.5 million to $140.5 million, is intended to reduce the risk of flooding after two “1,000year floods” sent water roaring down Ellicott City’s main street. The four buildings that will be destroyed are home to Phoenix Emporium, Discoveries, Bean Hollow and Great Panes Art Glass Studio. (TWP) MARYLAND

To D.C. by land … or sea

For some Metro riders, a Potomac water taxi could help during summer closures

Potomac Riverboat riders wave while traveling between Virginia and D.C.

KERY MURAKAMI PHOTOS (EXPRESS)

TRANSPORTATION Metro’s new unofficial conductor is 69 years old. He’s spent years of his life stressing over the bottom line as a vice president at a national real estate company. For a time he also wore a suit around Capitol Hill, keeping up with how Congress’ actions affected the lives and livelihoods of real estate agents. But last Wednesday, Ed Lawler, who will play a part in getting commuters to Washington during the coming shutdown of six Yellow and Blue line stations south of Reagan National, was happily at work in shorts and sneakers. On a day when the waters were calm, he wore a white shirt with the black-and-gold epaulet of a Coast Guard-licensed captain. Captain Ed, as he’s now called, pushed two levers in opposite directions, making the engines of the taxi-yellow catamaran work against each other as he inched the boat from the wharf. “I don’t want the passengers to feel me jerk the throttle around or anything,” said Lawler, who works for the Potomac Riverboat Company. “It should be smooth.” It’s a little different from riding Metro. Tens of thousands of commuters will have to find alternatives to Metrorail when the stations — with about 31,000 boardings a day — are shut down from May 25 to Sept. 8 so deteriorating platforms can be replaced. While it may not work for most, Potomac Riverboat is betting hundreds a day could abandon Metro shuttles and buses for the water taxi, which now mostly takes tourists between Alexandria’s waterfront and The Wharf, near the federal government offices around L’Enfant Plaza. The company is adding seven weekday runs between 6:40 and

Ed Lawler says captaining a Potomac water taxi is his “retirement job.”

9:20 a.m. beginning the Tuesday after Memorial Day. It will also continue running boats back in the afternoon. During the shutdown, it’s offering a $10 round-trip weekday fare for the 30-minute ride. That’s half off the current $10 one-way fare. It’s also offering a $199 commuter package for unlimited commuting-time rides, which, over the 15-week shutdown, could work out to less than half the $3-per-trip Metro fare for the roughly 26-minute ride from King Street-Old Town to Smithsonian. There’s no single-tracking on

the water. But Lawler sailed the boat slowly at first, passing white buoys that mark a no-wake zone where boats are not supposed to create waves for other vessels. In the glassed main cabin at deck level sat five passengers, but another 20 were on the open top deck, even as the wind whipped up when the boat gained speed. They stared blankly, as Metro commuters do. But it was a different kind of zoning out as they watched the water and the contours of the shore change. Lawler was relaxed too, even as he steered around logs washed

George Washington Memorial Parkway lane expected to reopen today after sinkhole damage repairs

into the water by recent storms, which he said can bend a prop. Lawler worked in real estate for 40 years, eventually rising to vice president at Re/Max. He moved to D.C. 11 years ago to work for the National Association of Realtors to keep track of legislation and regulations and then travel the country explaining the laws. During that time, he would take Metro to work. He’d take weeks off, though, to race dinghies with sails, transport sailboats for a boat manufacturer or run whale-watching charters in the Caribbean. Now he sails full time. “This is my retirement job, being on the water,” he said. On the water, there are no announcements about being stopped because of a train ahead. Instead, that day’s delay was a flat Odyssey cruise ship pointed sideways as it turned in front of the water taxi near Alexandria. “Odyssey 2, this is Potomac Taxi 4 coming down river. I see you’re pivoting. Do you have a preference for me to go left or right?” Lawler radioed. “We can do one whistle,” came the reply. “One whistle in boat terms means I’m going to pass portside,” Lawler explained. “Port is left.” As the taxi approached the wharf on its return trip, it was noted to Lawler that a half-hour on the water inspires no one to head to work in their cubicle. “Maybe they’ll be more refreshed and have a better outlook about going to work,” he said of the passengers he may soon be taking to their jobs. Seeing the skeptical look in response, he suggested the boat could certainly help them on their way home. “ We sell beer,” he said. KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

We’re reducing our methane emissions by 50%. To lower our carbon footprint and yours. At Dominion Energy, we’re finding innovative ways to put natural gas to work to help build a sustainable energy future. We’re re-tooling our natural gas infrastructure to deliver on-demand power to help complement our use of wind and solar. And in areas where pipelines can’t reach, we’re pioneering modular liquefied natural gas to bring clean energy to areas dependent on carbon-heavy oil. We’re even harnessing methane from pig farms as a cleaner source of renewable energy and using it to power homes. Fewer greenhouse gases, a lower carbon footprint and cleaner air make natural gas a natural choice.

U.K. halts export of ‘Lady Chatterley’

The British government on Monday used its powers to preserve the nation’s cultural treasures to temporarily halt the export of a copy of “Lady Chatterley’s Lover.” The copy was used by the judge in the 1960 U.K. obscenity trial of Penguin Books in which the publisher of the sexually explicit novel was found not guilty. The case is regarded as a landmark victory for freedom of speech. The copy was sold to an overseas bidder in October for $73,000. BRUSSELS Secretary of State Mike Pompeo crashed a meeting of European foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday to push for a united trans-Atlantic front against Tehran and its nuclear program. But he failed to bend attitudes among leaders who fear the U.S. and Iran are inching toward war. Pompeo’s last-minute decision to visit the EU capital set up a confrontation between the U.S. secretary and European diplomats who have been scrambling to save the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. At least one, British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, said he feared that unintentional escalation from the U.S. and Iran could spark a conflict — an unusually bold statement that appeared to assign equal culpability to Washington and Tehran. Pompeo was rebuffed on even some basic requests in Brussels. The top diplomats of Britain, France and Germany agreed to meet one-on-one with Pompeo but would not allow the Americans the symbolic victory of a group meeting. The Trump administration has called for “maximum pressure” against Iran. The EU’s chief diplomat, Federica Mogherini, reached for a different extreme after meeting with Pompeo. “The most responsible attitude to take should be that of

STOCKHOLM Swedish prosecutors said Monday they are reopening a rape case against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and will seek his extradition from Britain. The move sets up a legal battle with the U.S., where the Australian computer hacker is separately wanted for allegedly hacking into a Pentagon computer. British authorities will have to decide which extradition request takes precedence. Assange, who sought refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in 2012 to avoid being sent to Sweden for questioning, was evicted last month after Ecuador revoked his political asylum. He was arrested by British police on April 11 and is currently in London’s Belmarsh Prison serving a 50-week sentence for jumping bail in 2012. Eva-Marie Persson, Sweden’s deputy director of public prosecutions, said Monday that “there is still a probable cause to suspect that Assange committed a rape. … It is my assessment that a new questioning of Assange is required.” Swedish prosecutors filed preliminary charges — a step short of formal charges — against Assange, 47, after he visited the country in 2010, following complaints from two Swedish women who said they were the victims of sex crimes committed by Assange. Court rules against Apple Antitrust lawsuit filed by iPhone users is allowed to proceed BUSINESS A divided Supreme Court ruled Monday that consumers can pursue an antitrust lawsuit that claims Apple has unfairly monopolized the market for the sale of iPhone apps. New Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the court’s four liberals in rejecting a plea from Apple to end the lawsuit. Apple charges a 30% commission to software

developers whose more than 2 million apps are sold through Apple’s App Store, and iPhone users who must purchase software for their smartphones exclusively through the App Store bear that cost in turn. IPhone users filed the suit. Kavanaugh wrote the majority opinion, arguing that Apple’s 30% commission on every app sale was enough to persuade that at this early stage of the legal fight, the lawsuit can continue. Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in a dissenting opinion that the consumers’ complaint against

Apple is the kind of case earlier high court rulings said was not allowed under federal laws that prohibit unfair control of a market. Apple had argued it’s merely a pipeline between app developers and consumers, and that iPhone users have no claims against Apple under antitrust law. The suit could force Apple to cut the commission it charges software developers. A judge could triple the compensation to consumers under antitrust law if Apple ultimately loses the suit. Trade war escalates

Stock markets slide after Beijing announces $60 billion in new tariffs on U.S. goods

ECONOMY The United States and China traded blows on Monday in the latest escalation of their tariff war, unnerving Wall Street and threatening to draw American consumers into the fray for the first time. Both nations, which just days earlier had anticipated sealing a comprehensive commercial deal, instead took steps to raise new trade barriers. In Beijing, the Chinese government announced plans to impose tariffs on $60 billion worth of American products in retaliation for U.S. tariffs that President Trump increased on Friday. Trump, meanwhile, began the process of expanding U.S. tariffs to cover all $540 billion in Chinese imports — a potentially seismic jolt to the global economy that is expected to raise prices for everyday products such as cellphones, sunglasses, cameras and televisions. “There will be price hikes at Target, Costco, Home Depot and Walmart,” said Nelson Dong, a partner with Dorsey & Whitney in Seattle. “The importers are going to pass on some or all of the tariff to the consumer, and that will become much more readily apparent and harder to mask.” With hopes fading for an early resolution of the yearlong U.S.China trade dispute, the president said he would meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G-20 leaders summit in Osaka, Japan, on June 28-29. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told CNBC that the two sides remained in “ongoing” negotiations. “I love the position we’re in,” the president told reporters. Investors were less impressed, sending the stock market to its worst one-day performance in months. The Dow Jones

In reaction to new tariffs, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday down more than 617 points, or 2.4%.

Industrial Average, which was down 719 points at its low, ended the day down more than 617 points, or 2.4%, to close at 25,324.99. All 30 Dow stocks lost ground. Trump boasted incorrectly on Monday that the federal government is collecting “hundreds of billions of dollars” in tariff revenue and said he planned to use $15 billion of that amount to bail out farmers suffering from lost sales to China. In fact, the Treasury Department has collected $39 billion in customs duties over the first seven months of the current fiscal year, roughly $18 billion more than in the same period one year earlier. Industry groups also proved hostile to the president’s latest action. Most industries have cheered the president for confronting China over its pilfering of trade secrets and market-distorting policies. But executives have

Effects of tariffs On U.S.: Oxford Economics calculated that the higher tariffs will slow the U.S. economy by 0.3% in 2020, a loss of $490 per American household. On China: The latest U.S. duties could knock 0.5 percentage points off annual Chinese economic growth, and that could widen to 1 percentage point if both sides extend penalties to all of each other’s exports, economists say. That would pull annual growth below 6%, raising the risk of politically dangerous job losses. (AP)

grown increasingly restive as the tariff toll has mounted. The sense of deepening confrontation between the world’s two largest economies represents a sharp contrast to last week’s expectations of an imminent deal. The president said Monday that the two sides had

completed “95 percent” of an agreement before talks broke down. After concluding that the Chinese were reneging on terms they had agreed to during earlier bargaining rounds, Trump last week opted to more than double tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports. That tariff increase to 25% from 10% took effect on Friday. The tariffs Trump set in motion on Monday would hit an additional roughly $300 billion in imports, leaving almost no products from China entering the United States without incurring a tax. National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow acknowledged in an interview on “Fox News Sunday” that Americans will suffer. “In fact, both sides will pay. Both sides will pay in these things,” Kudlow said. DAVID J. LYNCH, TAYLOR TELFORD, DAMIAN PALETTA AND GERRY SHIH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Troops capture 5 villages in last rebel stronghold

The wife of Meng Hongwei, the former Interpol president jailed in China for what she believes are political reasons, said Monday that France has saved her life and the lives of their two young boys by granting her asylum request. The French government office that rules on asylum requests rendered its decision last week, granting her refugee status, Grace Meng’s legal team said. She told The Associated Press that the guarantee of being able to stay in France offers her family greater security while she tries to get information from China about her husband’s whereabouts and even whether he is still alive. Sudanese prosecutors have charged ousted President Omar al-Bashir with involvement in killing protesters and incitement to kill protesters during the uprising that drove him from power last month, state news agency SUNA reported Monday. Protest organizers say security forces killed around 100 demonstrators during the four months of rallies leading to al-Bashir’s overthrow. The ruling military council has said al-Bashir will face justice in Sudan and will not be extradited to The Hague, where the International Criminal Court has charged him with war crimes linked to the 2000s Darfur conflict. Syrian troops on Monday captured five small villages and a hill on the edge of the northwestern province of Idlib, the last major rebel stronghold in the country, pro-government media said. The Syrian Central Military Media said government forces captured the villages of Hawash, Jabrieh, Tawbeh, Sheikh Idriss and Jub Suleiman and Hawash hill on the southern edges of Idlib. Syrian troops have been advancing on the rebels for nearly two weeks under the cover of Syrian and Russian airstrikes. In return, the rebels have been blamed for firing rockets into Russia’s air base in nearby Latakia. (AP)

NEW COACH

Cavs give Beilein his first NBA job

BARRY SVRLUGA | THE WASHINGTON POST

What was determined on the Nationals’ 3-7 road trip was not much, not much at all. Focus on the hopeless sweep in Milwaukee if you believe the season is doomed. Find something to like about the split in Los Angeles if you somehow maintain optimism. Either way: On Monday, there was exactly one team in the NL with a worse record than the Nats. What’s worth considering now, though, are the larger questions. I’m not even talking about whether Dave Martinez is the right man to manage this bunch, because that’s small by comparison. What’s worth examining is the foundation on which this franchise is built. General manager Mike Rizzo has said two things worth noting. The first: He and his staff try to build a 90-win club every year. Sometimes they exceed by a few games, sometimes they fall short by a few. But they’re always competitive, at least since 2012. The second is more blunt, and it came just before this depressing trip began: “Every important decision that’s made for the Washington Nationals, I’m responsible for.” This is Rizzo’s team. It’s Rizzo’s roster, Rizzo’s frontoffice staff and, to an extent, Rizzo’s manager. Put aside the injuries and Martinez’s in-game decisions,

and you’re left with two major failures: a bullpen that was illconstructed and ill-equipped to contend, and a roster that wasn’t deep enough to absorb the maladies that popped up in the season’s first month. Take the bullpen first. Rizzo historically adds key relievers when they were contending for the NL East title. The Nationals added Mark Melancon to close in 2016, then Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson in 2017. With a need identified, the Nats’ front office has often been able to fix it midstream. But here’s the problem, as we consider this 16-24 club: Why does it always have to be fixed midstream? This year’s bullpen was solid at the back end with Doolittle, an elite closer. But from there, it was banking on returningfrom-Tommy John surgery Trevor Rosenthal, who Rizzo admits was a “high-risk, high-reward” investment. The risk (significant) has thus far trumped any reward (zero), and the entire bullpen has suffered because of it. So the obvious answer would be to do what they always do: Fix it with a deal. There’s a problem, though. All of those midseason corrections have taken a toll on the Nats’ system. Given away in previous trades for relievers: Felipe Vazquez, an All-Star last year; Blake Treinen, also a 2018 AllStar; Jesus Luzardo, Oakland’s

Justin Thomas (wrist) withdraws from PGA Championship

Not just bad luck: Franchise is built on shaky ground

top prospect; and Nick Pivetta, banished to the minors by the Phillies but still just 26. The Nats’ most stirring and encouraging win on the recent trip came when Gerardo Parra, signed mid-trip, drilled a gamewinning grand slam Saturday night against the Dodgers. Great moment. Why was Parra needed as a Band-Aid? Because the Nats’ system is bereft of worthy fill-ins when the regulars go down — which they do,

with alarming regularity. For years, Rizzo’s trades have seemed unassailable. At times, it seemed laughable that he had won that many in a row. Now? The major league team is failing. And the minor league system doesn’t have the inventory to fix it. The rest of the season starts with the series against the Mets and Cubs, a critical homestand. But at this point, the rest of the season is a referendum on the organization as a whole. Are the Nats really an annual contender whose participation in the postseason depends only on health and luck? Or has their foundation eroded to the point that contending every year is no longer practical or possible? They’re scary questions. We’re about to learn the answers.

Cleveland has signed Michigan’s John Beilein to a five-year head coaching contract. The 66-year-old Beilein does not have pro experience but he’s long been regarded as one of college hoops’ best minds. He guided Michigan to two Final Fours in the past seven years and has developed several top players. Beilein is the winningest coach in Michigan history with a 278-150 record in 12 seasons. He tweeted his thanks Monday to Michigan’s players and fans. The Cavs are rebuilding after a 19-63 season that followed the departure of LeBron James. Cleveland fired coach Tyronn Lue after six games last season and then mutually parted ways with Larry Drew last month to begin a thorough search. (AP)

Season series: Milwaukee, 3-1

Season series: Tied, 2-2

Schedule: Wednesday and Friday at Milwaukee; May 19 and 21 at Toronto; and if necessary May 23 at Milwaukee; May 25 at Toronto; May 27 at Milwaukee. TV: All games on ESPN, all starting at 8:30 p.m. EDT except a 7 p.m. start to Game 3 in Toronto. Storyline: The Bucks are seeking their first trip to the NBA Finals since 1974, and the Raptors are looking to get there for the first time. Milwaukee has rolled through the playoffs, past Detroit and Boston. Toronto overcame a 2-1 deficit in the second round against Philadelphia — then needed Kawhi Leonard’s incredible jumper at the buzzer to win Game 7. Key matchup: Leonard vs. Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo. Leonard has arguably been the best player in the playoffs, and Antetokounmpo is a frontrunner for the regular season MVP award. Numbers of note: Toronto must get more from its starting guards — Danny Green averaged seven points against the Bucks in the regular season and Kyle Lowry was a dismal 1-for-20 from 3-point range against them.

Schedule: Tonight and Thursday at Golden State; May 18 and 20 at Portland; and if necessary May 22 at Golden State; May 24 at Portland; May 26 at Golden St. TV: All games on TNT, all starting at 9 p.m. EDT. Storyline: Just when the Warriors seemed vulnerable, they go into Houston, without Kevin Durant, and get a series-clinching win to prove they’re built for this time of year. Golden State is bidding for a fifth consecutive trip to the NBA Finals, and Portland is in the West finals for the first time in 19 years. Durant (calf strain) will miss at least Game 1, but getting him and DeMarcus Cousins (quadriceps) back at some point in this series would only make the Warriors tougher. Key matchup: Golden State’s Klay Thompson vs. Portland’s CJ McCollum. Both guards are coming off huge games in their respective second-round series clinchers. McCollum had 37 points; Thompson had 27. Numbers of note: Damian Lillard was sensational vs. Golden State during the regular season, averaging 28.3 points. But McCollum shot only 37 percent. (AP)

Gibbs to miss French Open for salivary gland surgery

Jockey Luis Saez was suspended 15 days for failing to control Maximum Security and causing interference that resulted in the horse’s historic disqualification as the Kentucky Derby winner. The decision by the Kentucky stewards was announced Monday by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. Saez was cited for failing to “make the proper effort to maintain a straight course” in the May 4 race at Churchill Downs. Country House, a 65-1 shot, was elevated and declared the winner. The stewards’ ruling came a week after the commission denied co-owner Gary West‘s appeal of the horse’s disqualification. (AP)

Prosecutors have dropped charges against fighter Conor McGregor after he allegedly smashed a fan’s phone outside a Miami Beach hotel. The State Attorney’s Office said Monday the victim has stopped cooperating with investigators and has recanted his story. The fan, Ahmed Abdirzak, dropped his civil lawsuit with McGregor after reaching a settlement. McGregor, 30, was arrested in March. According to a lawsuit, Abdirzak and other fans were taking video of McGregor outside a hotel when the fighter allegedly punched the phone out of Abdirzak’s hand, stomped on it and walked off with it in his pocket. American Nicole Gibbs says she will miss the French Open because of surgery for salivary gland cancer. Gibbs, 26, tweeted that the procedure will be Friday and that her goal is to return for Wimbledon qualifying in late June. The French Open begins May 26. Gibbs reached the third round at the 2014 U.S. Open and 2017 Australian Open. Her career-best ranking was 68th in 2016. She is currently 116th. She won NCAA singles and team titles at Stanford. Gibbs said a growth on the roof of her mouth was discovered at the dentist and her surgeon is “confident that surgery alone will be sufficient treatment.” (AP)

Real change comes when you make changes based on who you are, not on how you think you will be perceived. Attempting to change your behavior and appearance to earn the approval of others taps into what researchers call “social identity threat.” If you see yourself as overweight or unfit, it becomes part of your social identity. Or maybe you actively seek novel experiences, like exploring new places. Your values would include adventure and curiosity. Eating well and staying active will help you with those values because it’s easier to travel if you can walk for miles and haul your own luggage. Setting goals based on what you value goes beyond achieving something — such as a desired weight or clothing size — just so you can check it off. It’s about making decisions that align with who you are and how you want to be. You can live your values every day regardless of whether you reach your goal. If you find your motivation tends to wax and wane, how do you gain motivation that is values-based? First, identify a few values that are especially important to you. Then, set goals in the context of those values, such as “I will lift weig weights X days per week so I stay st strong as I age (independence) a and can travel with ease (adventu (adventure).” Or, “I will cook X days a week w because I enjoy it (pleasure) and I feel better when (pleasur I eat out o less (self-care).” Every ttime you are at a choice crossroads, ask yourself, cr “If I choose X, is that moving me closer to what I value, or farther away?” That said, remember reme emb b to retain some flexibility. If you turn values-based actions into i rules — “I value my physical independence, so I must go to the gym every day no matter what” — you become rigid and actually lose touch with the value of indep independence. CARRIE DENNETT (FOR THE W WASHINGTON POST)

Focus on whole foods, not organics Marketers often use scare tactics to make people buy one product over another — especially organic foods. The Environmental Working Group, for example, asserted in a recent report that organic packaged foods are safer than conventional packaged foods, since they don’t contain toxic pesticides or added chemicals. But the argument is misleading. “The word chemical just means a composition of things — air, water, soil. Everything is a form of chemicals,” says Elvira de Mejia, a professor of food science at the University of Illinois. Your money is best spent on whole foods. Don’t be tricked into thinking packaged food is good for you if it’s organic: There is nothing about organic packaged cookies, macaroni or ice cream that makes them safer or more nutritious than conventional versions. DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

A year later, I’m still not over him

Q. Our second and last child

BEN CLAASSEN III (FOR EXPRESS)

Q. It’s been a year since a breakup with my boyfriend and I

still don’t want to date anyone else. We were together for six years and I did not want to break up, and I still feel all the time like he made a mistake. I keep hoping he’ll come around, and I would take him back in a heartbeat. But time goes by and there is no sign of that. I don’t talk about it to anyone because I know I should be “over it by now. So — how far gone am I? You’re only as gone as you think you are. That’s not meant to be motivational fluff, but rather to emphasize this: Continuing to think that something is wrong with you is only going to make you feel worse. Six years is a long time in your life, and there’s no

switch to flip to make you over it. But then again, you might need some help reconciling that it is indeed over. The question here is not what you “should or “shouldn’t feel, but rather how you deserve to. And seeing someone for counseling could help you

feel better faster. A skilled therapist would help you figure out how to find meaning and motivation in the fact that this relationship existed — and ended — in the way it did, and with meaning can come acceptance and moving forward.

is going to college in the fall. Meanwhile, my husband is starting a new phase in his career and couldn’t be more excited. I, however, worked a part-time job all these years that I didn’t care much about but which allowed me to be around my kids. I’m terrified I will feel so empty and lonely and have nothing to occupy me. My husband doesn’t understand.

This is an important, complex transition in your life, and it makes sense that it’s bringing up deep feelings and anxiety. There is a lot of room, though, to turn it into an opportunity rather than make it solely a loss (though reckoning with the loss is

important too). This is a chance to get to know yourself again, carve out new senses of purpose, find new directions that bring interest and engagement, and even to reach new layers of intimacy with your husband — if you and he are willing to try. Talk to him, and keep talking. Help him understand if he doesn’t seem to. Search out and talk to others going through this, too. Consider talking to a therapist, to gain insight and carve out your next path. And I’m betting you could use the chance to have your feelings validated as well. Day was a timeless icon

The singer, actress and animal welfare activist died Monday at 97

Doris Day rose to fame as a renowned singer and actress with a wholesome image of womanhood.

Day and Rock Hudson starred together in a series of comedies.

HAROLD MATOSIAN (AP)

1922-2019 Doris Day, a singer and actress who personified wholesome American womanhood in the 1950s and 1960s — memorably as the chaste but chased-after love interest in sex farces with Rock Hudson and Cary Grant — died Monday at her home in Carmel Valley, Calif. She was 97. The Doris Day Animal Foundation announced her death, saying she had contracted pneumonia. A comely platinum blonde with a dramatic and slightly husky voice, Day had catapulted to fame as the armed forces’ sweetheart with her million-selling recording of “Sentimental Journey.” The song, released in 1945 and backed by Les Brown’s band, helped set the musical tone of homefront America during World War II. “She was every bandleader’s dream,” Brown once said. “As a singer, Doris belongs in the company of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra.” Her good looks and unwaveringly warm personality helped her transition to movies, even as she remained a top-ranked pop singer with hit ballads such as “It’s Magic,” “Secret Love” and “Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be).” Her movie career, which included nearly 40 films over two decades, was more checkered. While she showed promise in

dramatic roles — she worked with director Alfred Hitchcock on “The Man Who Knew Too Much” — she was more drawn to mediocre comedies and musicals. She initially became an audience favorite as a peppy star of musicals such as “Romance on the High Seas” (1948), “Calamity Jane” (1953) and “The Pajama Game” (1957). She remained for several years one of the country’s top box office draws. In films such as “Teacher’s Pet” (1958), “Pillow Talk” (1959) and “That Touch of Mink” (1962), she cemented her persona onscreen: the modern working woman guarding her chastity against smooth-talking wolves — Clark Gable, Rock Hudson and Cary Grant, respectively. Despite Day’s perpetually sunny image, her life was marked by periods of physical, emotional and financial abuse. Her first husband, trombonist Al Jorden, beat Day; her second, saxophonist George Weidler, couldn’t stomach her success; and her third, producer Martin Melcher, cheated her out of her hard-won fortune. By the time of her death, she had long retreated from show business and had gained renown for her work in animal welfare. In 2004, when she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, the award cited her influence as a performer and an activist. “ T h e mor e I s t udy hu man beings,” she once said, “the more I love animals.” ADAM BERNSTEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Ensler gets the ‘Apology’ she always wanted BOOKS When Eve Ensler was 5, her father started sexually abusing her. As she grew older, he began beating her. She developed strange infections, suffered night terrors and began drinking. Eventually, she broke away and wrote 1996’s “The Vagina Monologues,” one of the most celebrated plays of the 20th century. Although Ensler knew he never would, she waited for her father to say he was sorry. Even after he died, she kept waiting. So her book “The Apology,” which comes out today, contains the words that Ensler needed to hear her father say. The text is presented as a letter written by her father from beyond the grave. “It takes so long to get to a place where you can open yourself to feel what your perpetrator feels,” she says, “and to know what they’ve been through, to know who they are, because it’s so much easier and less painful to cast them as a kind of monolithic monster.” It’s a slim book of unbearable heft, as her father confesses the weakness that made him so cruel and acknowledges the damage he caused. But Ensler isn’t letting her father — or any abuser — off the hook. “I needed to understand what led my father to do what he did in order to make sense of it,” she says. “I didn’t feel like it was justification. I felt like it was explanation.” RON CHARLES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“Joel Embiid being reduced to tears tonight is going to make a very scary dude even more scary going forward. From pain comes growth.” @BYTIMREYNOLDS, tweeting about the

emotional response of the Philadelphia 76ers center to losing Game 7 of the conference semifinals against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday. The 76ers lost after Embiid unsuccessfully tried to block forward Kawhi Leonard’s buzzerbeater. The shot broke a 90-90 tie.

“I bet all those women who named their new babies ‘Daenerys’ or ‘Khaleesi’ a couple years back are feeling pretty regretful.” @AISHAMERRITT19, joking about the impact of actions taken

by Daenerys Targaryen in Sunday’s “Game of Thrones” on those who chose “Thrones”-inspired baby names. According to NBC News, in 2018, 560 U.S. babies were named Khaleesi — the character’s title — while eight were named Daenerys.

“Going to IHOP and ordering their new fallopian flapjacks.” @ANIMAL_MOTHAH, in a jab at the restaurant chain’s Mother’s Day tweet: a sonogram image of a uterus containing a stack of pancakes, with the text, “If you have pancakes in your tum tum, does that make you a pancake mum mum?” The bizarre tweet was met with confusion and distaste by many — not least because the pancakes a person eats end up in the stomach, not the uterus.

“My girl stood her ground in 8-inch platforms you can’t peer pressure her to be gross!!!” @BRODIELANCASTER, supporting

singer Kacey Musgraves after she refused to do a “shoey” — which involves taking a shot out of a fan’s shoe — at her Sydney concert Sunday. As the crowd chanted “shoey,” Musgraves refused, even telling an eager fan who offered their cowboy boot, “You could have athlete’s foot or something.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You will serve as tour guide for someone who is new to a certain situation and needs to learn the ropes very quickly. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) There are no absolutes today, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be confident about what lies ahead. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You can be very proud of the work someone else has recently done, since he or she learned a great deal from you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) There’s no shame in copying what someone else is doing — or at least the way he or she does it. You can learn much. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) An unusual gift has you thinking that maybe things are not quite what they seem — in a very good way. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You will benefit from renewed enthusiasm that comes, in turn, from the gift of a new perspective that comes to you courtesy of a friend. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Take care that you don’t overcomplicate matters today. The simplest approach is almost always the best — at least for now. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You must be ready for something when it is offered, for it’s not likely to be offered again. Be in the right place at the right time.

62 | 50 TODAY: While we can’t totally rule out a stray shower, we should start drying out with intervals of sunshine. It’s still a good 10 degrees cooler than normal, with highs only 60 to 65. Winds are from the northwest around 10 to 15 mph, with gusts over 20 mph at times. Mostly clear and chilly tonight.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Style and fashion are of unusual interest to you today. This may have something to do with the fact that you must put your best foot forward. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) What comes first must be dealt with first — today, certainly, and perhaps tomorrow as well. Take things in the order they come.

Britney Spears told a Los Angeles judge that her father, Jamie Spears, had her committed to a mental health facility against her will, TMZ reported Monday. The pop star recently spent 30 days at a mental health facility, writing on Instagram at the time that she was taking “a little ‘me time.’ ” But Spears now says her father forced her to check into the facility and take certain drugs, despite not having authority to do so under the conditions of her conservatorship, according to TMZ. Spears, 37, reportedly also wants to end the conservatorship, a form of guardianship managed by her father that has been in place for more than 11 years. (EXPRESS)
