America Needs More Big Gulps A man who helped himself to a refill of his 89-cent drink at a Charleston, S.C., Veterans Affairs hospital got more than he expected when he was fined $525. There are signs warning that refills aren’t free, but Lewis, a construction worker, says he never saw them and has refilled his drink before. (AP) HUSTLED

Survey Says: The Future Is Meh Washington

Americans have a lot of optimism about the scientific advances they think the next 50 years will bring. They think new organs will be grown in labs and that computers will be able to create great works of art, according to a new Pew report released Thursday. But Americans are also apparently pessimists who simply refuse to Dream Big when it comes to the most important issue of all: controlling the weather. Just 1 in 5 Americans think we will be able to control the weather? What happened to the people who crossed the oceans, climbed mountains, took to the stars and put a human being on the moon?

What happened to the starry-eyed optimism that caused us to look at our limitations not as ceilings, but as obstacles to be overcome? What happened to AMERICA? Also, while most Americans (59 percent) do think technological advancements will lead to a better future, there are some things that they view with less optimism. For example, a majority of people say they wouldn’t ride in a driverless car or eat meat grown in a lab. The driverless car thing tends to be based on where people live, Pew notes. About half of urban and suburban residents say they would ride in a driverless car, much higher than the 36 percent of rural people who say the same thing. The survey was conducted Feb. 13-18 among 1,001 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

So Can It, Like, Read Earth’s Mind? Washington The hunt for Earth’s alien twin reached a new milestone with the discovery of a faraway exoplanet that’s not much bigger than our own globe and is theoretically capable of retaining liquid water. The planet is the first Earth-size sphere found outside our solar system that also resides in the “Goldilocks zone” — the habitable range where the temperature is neither too hot nor too cold. In other words, the right conditions for life to potentially thrive. The planet, Kepler-186f, meets what experts believe are two basic requirements for life. One is that its size is similar to Earth’s, which

Danwon High School students hold papers Thursday with messages of “come back,” “love you” and “don’t lose your hope.”

Officials Probe Whether Captain Left Ship Early

YONHAP/AP

The most poignant reminders of what’s been lost here are the most ordinary. Desks in the classrooms of Danwon High School in Ansan, South Korea — where dozens of students were missing and feared dead Thursday after a ferry disaster — are cluttered with textbooks, gym clothes, empty water bottles … small bits of ordinary school life now infused with heartbreak. There is fury as parents and students lash out at the swarming news media. Horror, too, as they picture loved ones trapped in the cold and dark of a flipped, submerged ferry. Most refuse to believe that, even after dozens of attempts, a friend, a child, a sibling won’t answer their cellphone. They keep calling. One message on a blackboard reads: “Jin-yong! Please come home alive.” More than 320 Danwon High School second-year students — mostly 16- and 17-year-olds — left Tuesday night for what was supposed to be one of the highlights of the year, a 14-hour ferry trip to the southern resort island of Jeju. Now, as the hours stretch on since the ferry sank Wednesday with no word about more than 270 missing passengers among the 475 people on board, Ansan fears the worst. “Do you believe they’re still alive?” Lee Mi-shim, a 48-yearold mother of a missing student, asked a reporter as tears streamed down her face. “I know the chances aren’t good. … No one in his class has been rescued.”

Rescue team members search Thursday for passengers aboard the sunken ferry.

The 25 people confirmed dead Thursday include at least five students and two teachers, and there’s fear that number will go much higher because so many of the passengers were from the school. More than a dozen teachers were on board. “My baby is trapped in cold

waters now. How can I sleep comfortably?” said a 63-year-old grandmother of a missing student, tears welling in her eyes as she explained why she stayed overnight at the school’s auditorium waiting for news about the search. “I cannot live without him.” FOSTER KLUG AND HYUNG-JIN KIM (AP)

There was chaos and confusion on the bridge of a sinking ferry, with the captain first trying to stabilize the listing vessel before ordering its evacuation, a crewman said Thursday. By the time the order came 30 minutes later, he said, it had become impossible to help many of the passengers — although the captain survived. The confirmed death toll from Wednesday’s sinking of the Sawol off southern South Korea was 25, the coast guard said. But the number was expected to rise with about 270 people missing. Divers worked in shifts to try to get into the sunken vessel, but strong currents would not allow them to enter, a coast guard spokesman said. The divers planned to pump oxygen into the ship to help any survivors, but first they had to get inside. Officials also were investigating Thursday whether the captain got on one of the first rescue boats. (AP)

The conservative law yer who defended California’s ban on gay marriage at the Supreme Court is at work on another project: planning his daughter’s upcoming same-sex wedding ceremony. Charles Cooper, a former top official in the Reagan Justice Department, learned of his daughter’s sexual orientation during the legal battle over California’s Proposition 8, according to journalist Jo Becker’s soon-to-be-released book chronicling the movement to legalize same-sex marriage. Ashley Lininger became engaged to a woman identified in the book only as Casey just after the Supreme Court accepted the Proposition 8 case in December 2012. Cooper, a noted Supreme Court practitioner, argued the case in March 2013. The court ruled against Cooper’s clients, saying they did not have legal standing to challenge a federal district judge’s ruling that the ban was unconstitutional. Same-sex marriages then resumed in the nation’s most populous state. Cooper did not want to be interviewed for this story but issued a statement: “My family is typical of families all across America. We love each other; we stand up for each other; and we pray for, and rejoice in, each other’s happiness. My daughter Ashley’s path in life has led her to happiness with a lovely young woman named Casey, and our family and Casey’s family are looking forward to celebrating their marriage in just a few weeks.” ROBERT BARNES (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Russia-Ukraine Deal Reached In a surprise accord during talks in Geneva, Ukraine and Russia agreed Thursday on tentative steps to halt violence and calm tensions along their shared border after more than a month of Cold War-style military posturing triggered by Moscow’s annexation of Crimea. The agreement, brokered by the West, provides no long-term guide for Ukraine’s future nor any guarantee that the crisis in eastern Ukraine will abate. But it eases international pressure both on Moscow and nervous European Union nations that depend on Russia for their energy. Details and other developments: Details Of the Deal

Anti-Semitic Leaflets?

Meanwhile, In Russia …

The Geneva deal requires all sides to refrain from violence, intimidation or provocative actions. It calls for disarming all illegally armed groups and returning to Ukrainian authorities control of buildings seized by proRussian separatists. Notably, though, it does not require Russia to withdraw an estimated 40,000 troops massed near the Ukrainian border. Nor does it call for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine.

President Barack Obama conveyed skepticism Thursday about Russian promises to deescalate a volatile situation in Ukraine, and said the United State and its allies are ready to impose fresh sanctions if Moscow doesn’t make good on its commitments. Obama did not say what additional sanctions might be in the offing. U.S. officials have prepared penalties on wealthy Russians.

The U.S. on Thursday condemned as “grotesque” the distribution of leaflets demanding that Jews in eastern Ukraine register with a self-proclaimed local authority or face consequences. U.S. officials said the antiSemitic leaflets have appeared recently in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk. The State Department said it was looking into who is responsible but said it took the threat seriously no matter who was behind it.

A confident President Vladimir Putin on Thursday used his annual televised meeting with the nation to portray a powerful Russia. For about four hours, Putin answered questions from across the nation. Even Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency leaker who has taken refuge in Russia, asked a video question: Does Russia spy on its citizens like the U.S.? Oh no, Putin answered. (THE

An Execution Halted by Forgiveness Nour, Iran The execution of an Iranian convicted of murder was halted at the very last minute in a dramatic scene this week when the mother of his victim forgave him as he stood on the gallows with the noose around his neck, according to Iranian media. The convict, identified by his first name Bilal, had been sentenced to death for killing a teenager, Abdollah Hosseinzadeh, during a street fight seven years ago, the ISNA news agency reported. Bilal was brought blindfolded to the site of his planned execution Tuesday in a town square. He was stood on a chair on the gallows and the noose was put on his neck, according to pictures of the scene published by ISNA. But at the last minute, Hosse-

inzadeh’s mother, Samereh Alinejad, forgave him, after giving a speech to the crowd and then slapping Bilal in the face. Hosseinzadeh’s father helped take the noose off of Bilal. Hosseinzadeh’s family had come under calls by artists, soccer coaches and residents to pardon Bilal and accept blood money instead of exe-

cution, a provision allowed to victims’ families under Iranian law. Even an episode of a popular sports program on Iranian state TV had urged the family to forgive Bilal the day before his planned execution. Alinejad told the Shargh newspaper in an interview published Thursday that she resisted the pressure, including from her family. She told Shargh that her son Abdollah appeared to her in a dream and asked her to forgive his killer, and still she was reluctant. She said that in her speech at the gallows, she scolded the crowd for pressuring her to forgive. But after Bilal pleaded to her — and she slapped him — “I felt at ease” and forgave him, she said. Bilal will serve a prison sentence instead of being executed, according to the newspaper. LEE KEATH (AP)

Gray Launches Homeless Families Effort The plan comes as two men likely died from cold, police say

shelter for families at the shuttered D.C. General Hospital. Relisha and her mother and siblings were among hundreds of families crowded into the shelter, or housed in motel rooms paid for by the city. Gray has pledged to move 500 of them into subsidized apartments by July 9, greatly expanding a program known as Rapid Rehousing that subsidizes apartments for families in four-month increments, often up to nearly 12 months. Families pay 40 percent of their income for the housing, and the city pays the rest. To encourage landlords to participate and to allow families stay for a year, the city says it will guarantee rental payments for

Washington D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray kicked off an ambitious effort Thursday to move 500 homeless families into permanent housing by summer, even as police struggled to learn more about two men who were found dead Tuesday in Southeast. The discovery of the men’s bodies was the latest reminder of the city’s burgeoning homeless problem, which came into sharp focus last month with the disappearance of 8-year-old Relisha Rudd from a

12 month leases, help evict tenants who don’t follow through on paying their share, and even pay hundreds of dollars per apartment to bring dilapidated units up to code. The 100-day clock to house 500 families began running April 1. Gray said landlords have offered nearly 200 apartments so far, but they must next be inspected, and some likely will be unusable. “I know that we can solve this,” Gray said. “We can’t stand by and watch the increasing prosperity of this city while at the same time we have a dismal experience for families who are living at the margins.” Advocates for the homeless are split on the Rapid Rehousing initiative. The city has a record of keeping

Meanwhile … The D.C. Council sued the mayor for the first time in more than a decade Thursday, challenging Vincent Gray’s refusal to abide by a ballot measure granting the city greater fiscal freedom from Congress, even as Gray emphasized his sympathy with the Council’s ultimate goal. Under the referendum, which passed with 83 percent support, the city’s locally raised funds could be passed without a separate congressional appropriation. But a series of legal opinions from Attorney General Irvin Nathan and the Government Accountability Office held that it had “no legal force or effect.” (T WP)

The program is not designed to help homeless men living on the street, such as the two who were found near a highway overpass on Tuesday. The D.C. Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet ruled how they died, but police say it was likely due to hypothermia. Undergraduate tuition and fees at the University of Virginia would rise 4.3 percent for Virginians in the coming year under a proposal the governing board will consider next week. The current price is $12,458. U-Va.’s tuition has been closely watched in recent years as its leaders have wrestled with the sometimesconflicting goals of maintaining the widest possible access for state residents and competing with the nation’s elite private colleges and universities. Fall of Sprawl The world is made up of two types of people. Determining which kind you are doesn’t require a whole BuzzFeed quiz. Just answer one question: What do you think about a road that terminates in front of a cluster of homes? Some folks would consider that a “cul-de-sac,” a French phrase that evokes images of tykes frolicking on manicured front lawns. To the rest of us, it’s the phrase’s English translation (“bottom of the bag”) that seems like a more apt way to describe a spot that’s been cut off from the rest of a community. Ben Ross taps another synonym for the title of his new book, “Dead End: Suburban Sprawl and the Rebirth and American Urbanism” ($30, Oxford University Press). Although it’s ostensibly the story of where we live, the message is

Details Ben Ross will give a free talk at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the American Public Transportation Association (1666 K St. NW, #1100). At noon May 12, he’ll speak at the National Building Museum (401 F St. NW). It’s free, but preregistration is required at nbm.org.

focused on how we move — which makes sense considering that Ross was president of Maryland’s Action Committee for Transit for 15 years. The longtime Montgomery County, Md., resident, who’s a

hydrogeologist by trade, got involved in transit advocacy to support the Purple Line. A light rail route that would connect Bethesda, Silver Spring and New Carrollton seemed like a “dream” to him. It would ferry passengers between busy job centers and spur walkable development throughout the county. So why has the proposal been so controversial? “It’s a clash of value systems,” says Ross, 65, who’s learned that his opponents have one main concern: change. “They believe single-family houses and automobiles are superior to everything else,” he says. Those beliefs created the problems that now need to be addressed, Ross says. He points to the highprofile local examples of White Flint in Maryland and Tysons Corner, Va., which are being transformed into places where people will be able to get around without a car. He’s more optimistic about White Flint’s plan, with its larger network of connected small streets. It’s areas that have a true grid — without too many of those rascally dead ends — that are most conducive to walking, he notes. But the amenity that can really make or break a place, Ross says, is train service. Buses are an important part of a transportation network, but unless they have dedicated lanes, they’re still “hitting the same potholes as every car around them,” Ross says. “The train is what makes it advantageous not to drive. It’s what brings all income levels together. It’s what puts people on the streets in large numbers.” That’s why the Purple Line — now slated to open in 2020 — will make the D.C. area a nicer place to be. And that’ll be true, Ross says, no matter what kind of person you are.

Catcher Lobaton has Gonzalez throwing more off-speed stuff

The Nats opened a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Nationals Park on Thursday. In 2013, Washington went 0-6 against the eventual NL champions. Both teams entered the series 9-6.

FRIDAY

W hile the t wo were working together during spring training, Nationals catcher Jose Lobaton noticed how effective pitcher Gio Gonzalez’s change-up could be. It’s a pitch Gonzalez didn’t throw much until later last season, and he used it only in specific counts. Lobaton figured it could be the perfect complement to Gonzalez’s fastball and curveball.

Michael Wacha (2-0, 1.89 ERA) vs. Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 3.50 ERA)

“If he has a third pitch working, it’s going to be fun,” Lobaton said. Lobaton suggested Gonzalez throw his change-up more, and Gonzalez agreed without hesitation. “He’s the kind of guy that’s not afraid to throw anything,” Lobaton said. According to fangraphs.com, Gonzalez has increased the use of his change-up, throwing it 12.9 percent of the time in his three starts. During the 2013 season, Gonzalez threw the pitch 10.3 percent of the time, and he hadn’t reached the 10 percent mark in the previous four seasons. Gonzalez, who is scheduled to take the mound Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals, opened this season with two dominating wins against the Mets and Marlins. But he struggled against the Braves

last Sunday, giving up six runs in the first two innings of a 10-2 loss. Still, it’s apparent Gonzalez has added a weapon to his repertoire. “[Lobaton] does a great job building that confidence to have me attack the strike zone, pounding it and making sure we mix it up with all three pitches,” Gonzalez said. Lobaton, acquired by t he Nationals in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays in February, is sharing substitution duties with Sandy Leon after Wilson Ramos broke a bone in his left hand earlier this season. The offseason move has paid off for Gonzalez, who has seemed comfortable with Lobaton behind

the plate. “It’s hard when you’re the new guy and you’re coming to a staff you don’t know,” Nationals manager Matt Williams said. “We’ve had a chance to get [Lobaton] with our main guys a lot during spring training. In a situation like we have with Wilson, we have someone accustomed to being back there every day.” Lobaton isn’t sure why Gonzalez threw his change-up sparingly in the past. He’s just glad he noticed it before this season started. “I knew when I saw it in spring training, I knew it was a good change-up,” Lobaton said. “Whatever I see, if it’s working, I’ll call it.” JASON BUT T (FOR E XPRESS)

Bryce Harper, Nats: After hitting .143 in his first five games, Harper hit .483 in his next eight. He is dealing with quad tightness, which caused him to miss Wednesday’s game.

The Wizards enter the playoffs after a wild up-and-down final few weeks of the regular season. After clinching the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2008 on April 2, the Wizards seemingly relaxed. In their next two games, they suffered a blowout loss to Chicago in which they scored 26 firsthalf points and fell to Charlotte in overtime. Then Washington refocused for the final stretch — racking up four straight wins to close the season and finish in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, setting up a first-round matchup with Chicago. So are the Wizards just happy to be in the playoffs or are they ready

to make some noise? The first clues may come Sunday when the series opens in Chicago. “I think that everybody who loves the game of basketball that makes it to the NBA, that’s your ultimate goal — to win the NBA championship,” point guard John Wall said. “That’s my goal. … I think we’re taking the right steps in finally getting ourselves in the playoffs this season.” Wall, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft, will be making his playoff debut Sunday along with several other of the younger Wizards players, including Bradley Beal and Trevor Booker. “It’s going to be special,” coach Randy Wittman said. “No matter what the outcome is, guys that haven’t been in the playoffs will remember that first game forever because it is so distinct and different. But we also have to channel that in the right way and be ready

to play. That’s the main thing.” The Wizards have a solid veteran group that can help prepare the younger players for their first playoff experience. Nene, Marcin Gortat, Andre Miller, Al Harrington and Drew Gooden each have more than 40 games of postseason experience.

While it was a notable accomplishment for Washington to finish with the No. 5 seed, the Wizards face a Bulls squad that’s playofftested and physical. Chicago has overcome the loss of Derrick Rose to a season-ending injury and the salary dump trade of Luol Deng to finish with the East’s best record since the All-Star break. The Wizards know they need to bring their A-game. “We are starting to pay a lot more attention to detail,” forward Harrington said. “In order to win in the playoffs, that’s what we have to do. Guys have to grow up fast.” The playoff series will do wonders for Washington’s young core, but to the players, this is about more than making a token appearance. “I was hoping we were going to be in playoffs, we are in the playoffs and now we’re going to try to make a run,” center Gortat said.

It’s been a while since the Wizards were in the playoffs. Let’s see how much you remember from the good ol’ days — as well as this season — in this multiple-choice quiz. (Hey cheaters, put that smartphone down.) JEFFREY TOMIK (E XPRESS)

No. 1 Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich had another masterful season. He didn’t play anyone more than 30 minutes a game, tried various rotations and lineups to prepare for all in-game situations, and the Spurs still won the most games in the NBA. Now we find out just how fresh Tony Parker and the Spurs’ stars are and if the deep bench will stand up to the playoff pressure.

QUIZ

THE SLEEPER

THE SLEEPER

No. 6 Nets

No. 7 Grizzlies

After resting their starters and dropping to the No. 6 seed, the Nets get the first-round opponent they wanted in Toronto. The Raptors have home-court advantage in this series, but the veteran Nets will be favored against the inexperienced Canadian squad. If Brooklyn does advance and faces Miami, the Heat could be in trouble. The Nets went 4-0 against the defending champs this season.

The Grizzlies beat the Thunder last year in the conference semifinals, so why not this year? Memphis’ frontcourt of Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol are a tough matchup for anyone. The Grizzlies have also been playing their best basketball down the stretch, going 18-7 since March 1. Tony Allen and Tayshaun Prince are key. They won’t stop Kevin Durant, but they can make it a little tougher on him.

BEST MATCHUP No. 3 Raptors vs. No. 6 Nets Despite owning the third-best record in the East, the Raptors haven’t garnered much respect. But Toronto’s backcourt tandem of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry is younger and put up better stats than the Nets’ duo of Joe Johnson and Deron Williams. This series will show if playoff experience is more important than home-court advantage. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

For D.C. United, Two Schools of Thought After five games, D.C. United’s record sits at 2-2-1, including three straight contests without a loss. Last season, United didn’t win its second game until June 22. This year, the team accomplished that feat Saturday with a 1-0 win over the Red Bulls. With one more victory, United can equal its win total for all of 2013. So is this a playoff team? Here are reasons why that may or may not be the case. SETH VERTELNEY (FOR E XPRESS)

ROB CARR (GETTY IMAGES)

14 |

Coach Ben Olsen and D.C. United head Saturday to Columbus, Ohio, to face the Crew.

Positive Thinking

Negative Thinking

After conceding a conferenceworst 59 goals last season, United has solidified its back line in 2014. Veteran center backs Bobby Boswell and Jeff Parke have performed well, and Sean Franklin has held the right back spot down. Left back Cristian Fernandez has been shaky defensively, but he gets forward well and is still adjusting to a new league. Davy Arnaud and Perry Kitchen have shown promising chemistry as the center midfield duo, and new acquisition Chris Rolfe appears to be a solid addition at outside midfield. Perhaps most encouragingly, United has run off a string of good results while Chris Pontius and Luis Silva have been injured, and with zero goals this season from Eddie Johnson and Nick DeLeon. If all four are back and in form, the team’s ceiling rises considerably.

Though Parke and Boswell have done well so far, the grind of an MLS season will eventually take its toll, and the duo’s lack of pace will be exposed more and more. DeLeon has looked out of sorts so far, and he may never recapture his dynamic rookie-season form of 2012. Arnaud and Kitchen don’t provide enough offense, and the long-term absence of Pontius (left hamstring) could be a killer. Additionally, United’s good run of form has happened at home against struggling Eastern Conference foes (Chicago, New England and New York have combined for only three wins this season). An ugly New England own goal keyed United’s first win, and then the team was outplayed in the 1-0 victory over New York, only to be bailed out by awful Red Bull finishing.

Adrienne Bird-Wilson quit her Web-writing job last month. The 33-year-old has always thought of herself as a writer, and drafting online marketing text didn’t count. Now, she can devote herself to finishing a book about a struggling actress in L.A. “It’s semi-autobiographical, but it’s mostly fiction with some social commentary,” she says. That’s also a good description for the work of Sinclair Lewis, the Nobel Prizewinning novelist who once lived inside the stately Dupont Circle townhouse that BirdWilson calls home. If you live in an older part of town, there’s a good chance that a notable person once shared your space, says Paul K. Williams, who has written several books on local history.

Adrienne Bird-Wilson, 33, says that living in the basement of Sinclair Lewis’ former home in Dupont Circle inspired her to pursue a career in writing.

In addition to political types, plenty of musical geniuses called D.C. home. Duke Ellington laid claim to seven different D.C. addresses, including a narrow row home just south of T Street NW. The house’s current renters are Kimberly Olive Colla, 32, and her husband. The two of them didn’t know much about Ellington before they moved in, but they have since boned up on their local history. To get started, they read the sign on their fence, which was installed by Cultural Tourism D.C. It explains that Ellington spent his formative years in their home, studying jazz and ragtime piano. Tour groups regularly stop by and take pictures of the house, and one Ellington fan actually let herself into the foyer.

Looking for an updated rental? Next week’s issue looks at the perks of renovations and why they usually — but not always — drive rent up.

Sinclair Lewis’ spirit infuses his old D.C. home, tenant Adrienne Bird-Wilson says.

“She asked if this was a museum and if she could come in,” recalls Colla. “I explained that it’s our private residence, and there’s nothing historic left here, anyway.” Before Colla moved in, the home’s previous owners did a “total gut” of the house, she says. Now, it’s as airy and modern as the 2004 condos bearing Ellington’s name down the street. The only remaining period detail is probably the hand-carved banister. That doesn’t stop Colla from bragging to friends about her brush with fame. “I see signs about Duke Ellington all over the city and think, ‘He lived in my house,’ ” she says. The only physical holdovers from Sinclair Lewis’ time in his Dupont Circle home are the marble fireplaces and perhaps the bannister. However, Bird-Wilson feels like something of the novelist’s spirit infuses the place. That energy helped her realize that she needed to quit her job and focus on writing, she says. “It was definitely a factor in my decision,” Bird-Wilson says. Soon, the aspiring novelist will move to a place with cheaper rent — she currently pays more than $2,000 a month for the basement apartment. Her upstairs neighbor, Christine Clinton, 40, will be mov-

The Rent Is History Want to live in the footprint of fame? You can scope out notable people’s homes on websites like bigwigdigs.com and dcwriters .org, and hope one comes up for rent. Or, you can dig into your current home’s past, says local historian Paul K. Williams. “Sometimes your house is full of maids, janitors and stenographers, but other times you run across a pretty famous name.” Here’s Williams’ step-by-step suggestions:

1. Visit the D.C. Public Library’s Washingtoniana division, which is on the third floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (901 G St. NW; 202-727-0321, dclibrary.org/mlk). 2. Pull up your address in D.C.’s city directory, which dates back to 1914. 3. Flag any potentially interesting names and search for them in D.C.’s census records, which date back to 1790 and often include the residents’ occupation. 4. Search newspaper archives for mention of your potentially famous former resident or address. Pro tip: People with unusual names are a lot easier to investigate than the John Smiths of the world. ing out soon too. The 100-year-old house was great before she and her husband had twins — they even got a first-edition Sinclair Lewis book in honor of its former resident. Now, the three flights of stairs between the family’s bedrooms and laundry room are taking their toll. “The stairs are killing me,” Clinton says. “It was fun while it lasted, but I’m done with old houses.” SADIE DINGFELDER (E XPRES S)

$1,862

$1,725

This one-bedroom has a huge U-shaped kitchen with stainless steel appliances, espresso-finished cabinetry and granite countertops. The bedroom has a Juliette balcony. Trilogy NoMa runs a shuttle to and from the NOMA-Gallaudet Metro station (which is less than a half mile away) during morning and evening rush hours. This unit is $1,862 for a 6- or 12-month lease; on special for $1,719 for a 13- to 24-month lease. Contact: Leasing office, 877-2096286, landing.trilogynoma.com.

The buildings dates to the 1960s, but the studio was renovated about a year ago, the property manager says. Its three closets may seem like a throwback to a simpler time, but the kitchen, with stainless steel appliances, is decidedly modern and opens into a large living and sleeping area with parquet floors. There’s a washer/dryer on every floor, and a rooftop pool. It’s about a half-mile to the McPherson Square Metro. Contact: Leasing office, 202-3321334. BETH MARLOWE (E XPRES S)

ing by a radical anti-technology group. When it becomes clear that Will has been poisoned by a polonium-tipped bullet, his wife, Evelyn (Rebecca Hall), and his best friend, Max (Paul Bettany), decide to upload Will’s fading consciousness to a supercomputer. Will, who is now merely a collection of ones and zeros, decides to surf the Web, vacuuming up all human knowledge and power — including WebMD, cat videos and access to the global financial system — into his electronic brain. In short order, he has morphed from a mild-mannered computer nerd into a sexier version of Oz the Great and Powerful, reigning, via video screen, over a fortified bunker in the desert, where his arms and legs have been replaced by a cadre of humanoid automatons created through robotic nanosurgery.

PETER MOUNTAIN (WARNER BROS. PICTURES)

A New Way to Pull the Plug

He looks human here, but Johnny Depp turns into a computer in “Transcendence.”

For Johnny Depp, the Internet replaces the afterlife in ‘Transcendence’ Unlike last year’s critical darling “Her,” which was a poetic, melancholic meditation on the failure to connect, “Transcendence” is a kind of high-tech horror story. In this case, the bogeyman is the Internet.

The extent to which it succeeds in frightening depends on your philosophical alignment with, say, Ted “Unabomber” Kaczynski. People living in cabins without running water or Wi-Fi, in other words, will probably love it,

because it confirms their deepest, darkest fears. All others, proceed with caution. The story gets underway when Will Caster (Johnny Depp), a scientist specializing in artificial intelligence, narrowly survives a shoot-

A Romance That Has Teeth ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ resurrects the tired vampire genre Film Review As unlikely as it sounds in the era of “Twilight” and its defanged imitators, Jim Jarmusch’s “Only Lovers Left Alive” proves there are still new meanings to be derived from the conceit of characters who never die and feast on the blood of others. The film begins with the first of

frequent God’s-eye-view shots, in this case of Adam (Tom Hiddleston) and Eve (Tilda Swinton), who are splayed out in their respective flats in Detroit and Tangier, Morocco, like

two junkies on the nod. Eve has been living for the past hundred years or so with the playwright Kit Marlowe (John Hurt), looking for the perfect hemoglobin fix. Adam, for his part, is an analog guy living in a digital word, holed up in Detroit, his apartment filled with vintage guitars and musical equipment. Eve finally travels to Michigan to sort him out, and is soon joined by her sister, Ava, played by Mia Wasikowska. “Only Lovers Left Alive” becomes an often ravishing study of a civilization teetering on

Directed by cinematographerturned-fi lmmaker Wally Pfister, from a script by first-timer Jack Paglen, “Transcendence” wastes no time with such details as logic or credibility. It’s the kind of movie in which people shout stuff like, “The incoming queries have all been anonymized!” — hoping, presumably, that most people won’t stop to wonder what that sentence means. The problem with “Transcendence” isn’t that it’s an utter crock. At times, the tale, like “Her,” betrays flashes of genuine insight into our love-hate relationship with technology. And the acting, while wooden on the part of Depp — who appears throughout most of the film on a monitor, like a high-def Max Headroom — is decent enough. No, the real trouble with the film is that it just isn’t all that scary. The movie opens with a prologue, set five years in the future, in which there is no more Internet, no more Facebook, no more Google. This post-apocalyptic vision of an unplugged tomorrow is supposed to be horrifying, but in truth, the thought of a world that has hit the restart button, however reluctantly, is actually kind of refreshing. She’s the perfect match for Hiddleston, and together they make a cultivated pair of wraiths, keeping their bloodlust at bay with courtly manners. Despite the comedy, “Only Lovers Left Alive” has something serious to offer: a passionate plea to the human race to embrace values of beauty, nature and intellectual daring. In Jarmusch’s capable hands, a film about the undead becomes a fierce, funny and stylish argument for life. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE THE EASTER SEASON!”

“Bears” gives its stars Sky, left, and Scout a great deal of personality, considering they don’t talk.

‘Bears’: Warm, Fuzzy and Fun Film Review For the past several years, Disneynature has marked Earth Day by releasing a documentary celebrating Mother Nature. “Bears” is the studio’s latest nature doc with a twist. It’s more reality show than peer-reviewed research, and like any reality show, the creators have endowed their subjects with moxie, personality and drama. “Bears” opens with narrator John C. Reilly introducing a mama bear, named Sky, and her two newborn cubs, Scout and Amber. The film follows the bear family as they journey from the cozy comfort of their den on a perilous trek through the Alaskan peninsula in search of Sky’s primary sustenance, spawning salmon. Reilly lightens dangerous sequences by cheerfully narrating the cubs’ antics. There’s plenty of imagined dialogue between the cubs and their mama, but Reilly’s charming enough to pull off the balance between educational tidbits and talking-animal shtick. The humor, it turns out, is necessary considering the number of tense moments. Not surprising, then, that the often-jokey narration of “Bears” doesn’t focus on every aspect of a brown bear’s life cycle, as “March of the Penguins” or “Winged Migration” did for their avian subjects. For that, you’ll want to take advantage

‘Bears’ (G) Director: Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey Stars: John C. Reilly In a Nutshell: An Alaskan mother bear protects her cubs from an avalanche, angry male bears and other dangers.

of the film’s extensive interactive guides and activity sheets online. Parents, take note: The movie is rated G, but there could be tears and protests from sensitive young animal lovers — particularly during one nearly unendurable scene, when a male bear pokes through fallen logs in an attempt to eat one of the cubs. Don’t be surprised if older kids, on the other hand, want to Google “filial cannibalism” the moment the credits roll. “Bears” is a story of triumph and family. The spectacular cinematography (which took a year to capture, a process highlighted during the credits), the sometimes silly and sentimental narration, and the alternately cutesy and menacing score are all used to showcase the dramatic lengths the wildlife kingdom’s most famously protective mother will go to provide for her cubs. All of that makes “Bears” a great pick not just for Earth Day, but for Mother’s Day, too. SANDIE ANGULO CHEN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Eric Lomax (Colin Firth, right) struggles to forgive a former captor, played by Hiroyuki Sanada, in “The Railway Man.”

You can’t really cure a broken arm, can you? If you took an X-ray of my left radius, you’d see a line that says, “No matter how good your Spanish, unless you ask the scooter guy in Mexico, ‘Hey, is there anything I should know about starting this thing on a sandy street?’ you might have a problem, and that problem will be said scooter landing on you.” My bone still bears the mark of my scooter stupidity, but it has healed. It is not cured. There’s a difference. “The Railway Man,” out locally Friday, misses that difference. It’s based on the true story of Eric Lomax (Jeremy Irvine and Colin Firth, as young and old Lomax, respectively), a British soldier who was captured, held and tortured by the Japanese in Singapore during World War II. Lomax suffers from what we’d now call post-traumatic stress disorder; after discovering that one of his captors is alive and giving tours at the old prison, Lomax returns to confront and eventually forgive him. In doing so, the film implies, Lomax is healed and he is cured. It’s impossible to watch “The Railway Man” and not feel its echoes today, as so many men and women return home from seemingly eternal wars only to have to fight one more against their own demons. I don’t know much about PTSD, as I only know what TV and movies have told me: People either “conquer” it, or they don’t. And losing the battle usually means death. From 2009 to 2011, t here was a

‘The Railway Man’ (R) Director: Jonathan Teplitzky Stars: Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irvine and Stellan Skarsgard Quick Take: A former British Army officer reflects on his time as a prisoner of war in Singapore during World War II. He sets out to find closure when he discovers one of his captors is still alive.

44 percent increase in suicides among male veterans younger than 30, making the number around two a day. Not all of them had PTSD, of course. But some did. Some “lost” their battle. We know they lost because stories about PTSD say that “winning” means cured. Not cured means still sick, and it’s easy to get so tired of being sick that being dead seems like a better option. Pop culture PTSD says you’re cured when you have no more nightmares, just like you’re cured of cancer when the chemo kills the last of the bad cells. You’ve just got to find your chemo, soldier, and if you don’t … well, the statistics tell what happens then. I find it impossible to believe that the real Eric Lomax slept soundly every night from the time he forgave until the time he died. But audiences can walk out of “The Railway Man” thinking, “Wow, what he went through was really sad. I’m glad he got better.” They can go on thinking that the only other possible ending was Lomax’s suicide, because “cured” or “dead” are the only endings we hear about. It’s offensively simplistic, and until we change the stories about PTSD to something that allows a space for healed rather than cured, for living in a blend of continued weakness and newfound strength, it’ll be the story we keep telling ourselves as soldiers continue to fall. Plant Yourself at the Table The pot roast is in the oven, the floors are immaculate and the store-bought cherry pie has been transferred to a decorative plate so it looks like you made it. Yep, you’re definitely ready to host a dinner party. So why does it feel like something’s missing? The answer may be fresh flowers. “To set the table with flowers honors your guests and says, ‘I decorated for you. I made something pretty for you,’ ” says florist Baylor Chapman, founder of Lila B Design in San Francisco and author of the new “The Plant Recipe Book” ($25, Artisan). Rather than plopping a dozen carnations into a Mason jar (just because you saw it on Pinterest does not make it cool), consider one of these off-center centerpieces. ABOVE: Edible flowers like jasmine, chrysanthemum and

nasturtium not only add a subtle bitterness to dishes, they also bring a welcome pop of color to your plate, especially now that it’s springtime. “Coming out of a long, dreary winter, people are expecting to see little blossoms everywhere,” Chapman says. Select a few safe-to-chomp ones in bright hues (we dropped orange pansies, $2.50 each, in vintage milk glass compotes) and position them alongside bunches of herbs like mint, thyme, basil and sage ($4-$10). Serve a tossed wild greens salad for the first course and encourage guests to sprinkle just-plucked buds on top. Anything left over can later be blended with olive oil and garlic to make a fresh garden pesto. Just be sure to wash plants thoroughly before they hit the table to remove any dirt or pesticides.

RIGHT: Just because all the guests have left doesn’t mean the bloom times have to end. Setting your table with perennials (plants that can live for more than two years) means your centerpiece gets a second life when transferred to your garden. “You can create this really cool living arrangement, and then take it apart and mix it up,” Chapman says. We positioned a primrose belarina ($13), stocks ($11) and lamb’s ear ($5.50) — all in their original plastic containers from the garden shop — in a repurposed wine box. Strategically arrange leaves so you can’t see into the container. We padded our vino box with old newspapers to achieve the right height and to prevent any jostling.

your florist when you’re willing to do a little foraging. Take a look around your yard — and maybe your neighbor’s yard if they’re out of town — and see if you can snip any unruly buds. (You’re just helping them prune while they’re on vacation!) And while it’s technically illegal to pick flowers from city lands, we doubt you’ll serve hard time for pilfering a daffodil or two on your walk through the park. We snagged some forsythia (ubiquitous this time of year in D.C.) and a few white flowers and placed them in a cylindrical vase with some found rocks. Total cost? Zilch (assuming you don’t need to post bail). ALL FLOWERS SOURCED FROM JOHNSON’S FLORIST AND GARDEN CENTERS, 4200 WISCONSIN AVE. NW; 202-244-6100, JOHNSONSDCFLORIST .COM. FACE TIME

Lisa Fain Blogger and food writer Lisa Fain, aka The Homesick Texan (homesicktexan.com), lives in New York City. But her palate and recipes remain lassoed to her Lone Star roots. Her new cookbook, “The Homesick Texan’s Family Table” ($30, Ten Speed Press), features some of her favorite down-home dishes like Sunday Brisket, Plum Cobbler and, our favorite, Cranberry-Green Chile Salsa. You probably get this question a lot, but, if you’re homesick, why not move back to Texas? I miss the food, and I miss my family. But I love New York, too. I do spend a lot of time in Texas, still.

and Tex-Mex! But Texas is a pretty diverse place. For instance, we have great Vietnamese food due to a large immigrant population. Also, people think we don’t eat vegetables, and that’s not true.

Is there any good Texan food in New York? Well, New York has all the world’s cuisine, but they can’t seem to do Tex-Mex right. But at least we have decent barbecue.

What kind of recipes are in the new book? These recipes are all inspired by recipes I grew up eating or that have been in the family for years.

Are there any big misconceptions on what Texan food is? One is that we only eat barbecue

What are the basics in a Texas pantry? Jalapenos, cilantro and chili powder. And if you’re going to make

What’s the secret to finding ingredients for these recipes on the East Coast? It’s gotten easier in the past 15 years, Mexican immigrants have spanned out across the United States, and they’ve opened stores. When I first moved here, I had to go to Brooklyn or Queens to find ingredients. But now most large stores in the U.S. have a selection of chile peppers. What’s the most-used thing in your kitchen? I’m going to say my cast-iron skillets. I have two 10-inchers, and I make just about every single thing I can in them. They’re great for frying things in. What’s the key to throwing a Lone Star State-style party? Have lots of food! I like to have lots of things that are easy to eat with your hands. And I like trays of enchiladas, because you can bake those and serve them all at once. And you’ll probably want to have lots of margaritas and Shiner Bock. Aren’t enchiladas hard to make? Enchiladas can be daunting. But if you’ve made lasagna, you can make them. It’s just about cooking a sauce and rolling them up. And if you have someone else to help, that’s great. DEAR MANOLO

STYLECABLE IS A D.C.-based online marketplace that sells

clothing and accessories from rising fashion designers (stylecable .com). The founders will host a pop-up shop Tuesday where you can nab new styles for 15 percent off (including Erika Schrieber’s cropped top, shown, $190) and get to know the creators behind the lines (1776, 1133 15th St. NW; 6:30-10 p.m., $20 in advance, $30 at the door). Also on tap: an open bar, lip and lash services and a design demo by Sarah McLaughlin of Sarah Cecelia Jewelry.

ANSWERS FROM THE SHOE BLOGGER

After yet another disastrous romance with a handsome but loutish young man, I’ve decided to swear off dating for the next few weeks. To see me through this cleansing ordeal, and to prepare me for the eventual arrival of the next Prince Almost-Charming, can you please suggest some shoes that will cheer me up?

The matrimonial powerhouse opened a shop-withina-shop (its fifth in the U.S.) at the Georgetown Anthropologie last week (3222 M St. NW; 202-3371363, bhldn.com). Expect dresses for brides (all under $4,000; shown, $1,800) and maids ($200-$350), plus glamorous accessories for the big day like hairpins, sparkly belts and jewelry.

Manolo says, yes it is true what they say, men are from Mars and women are from Neiman Marcus! For the man, the typical reaction to the romantic rejection is to go out with the backslapping buddies, have the beer or 12, and try again with the next young woman who flounces into view.

trips, if only to flee D.C.’s unpredictable weather. Before you head out, pick up Analog’s (716 Monroe St. NE; shopanalog .com) new travel kit ($24, shown), a clutch made of vintage fabric stuffed with on-therun staples like a travel journal, pencils and, in case you want to gloat to folks back home, a couple of postcards.

Grab Bag is gathered and reviewed by Jennifer Barger and Holley Simmons. Find more food, fashion, beauty and home goods at readexpress.com/grabbag.

For the typical woman, however, the best reaction is to go on the shopping spree, something of which the Manolo wholeheartedly approves. After all, is it not better to fall in love with the perfect pair of super fantastic new shoes, than to sit at home on the beanbag chair, chugging down the endless pints of Caramel-Choco-Chunk-BananaNut Buddy ice cream, while weeping into your Twitter account? (Not that there is anything wrong with the ice cream, but as with all mind-altering substances it is best used in moderation.) As for what sort of shoes would be best for alleviating the pain of the chronic Disappointment in Love Syndrome, the Manolo thinks these bright blue kittenish heeled sandals, the Lillit from the Loeffler Randall ($295, saksfifthavenue.com), will act as your mild anti-depressive antidote. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’re likely to come up with certain advancements that can put you ahead of the field if you transform them from fantasy into reality. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’ll have the chance to show just how careful you can be when another’s emotions are on the line. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Knowledge is power, but it’s not what puts you ahead of others. You get ahead by knowing how to use your knowledge to your advantage. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll be working harder than expected — and winning the results that such hard work can yield. Even your critics are impressed. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re going to have to put more on the line than you had originally anticipated, but you have good reason to do so, and you’re inspired.

A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
