CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

Church celebrates the second coming of its baby Jesus statue

Homer Simpson 101: Stupid risks make life worth living

Drivers on a Georgia highway had to hold their horses Saturday — because of a bunch of horses. News outlets report that a total of 10 horses blocked traffic on Highway 78 near North DeKalb Mall on Saturday morning. Motorists came to a standstill as police blocked off traffic to keep horses and drivers safe. Little Creek Horse Farm confirmed in a Saturday Facebook post that it was its horses that had gotten loose. (AP)

When police opened a suspicious package that arrived at a Hoboken, N.J., church last week, what they found surprised everyone: a baby Jesus statue that was stolen almost 90 years ago. WPIX-TV reports that a note inside explained that the sender inherited the statue, which had been in the family since it was stolen in the early 1930s. “Knowing the story, I felt it should be returned to the rightful owner,” the sender wrote. (EXPRESS)

Even Chief Wiggum wouldn’t have fallen for this con: A driver in England who was pulled over by police last week tried to pass off Homer Simpson’s driver’s license as his own. Thames Valley Police shared a photo of the fake license featuring Homer’s name and a picture of him making his “D’oh!” face. What’s worse: The license had the Simpsons’ address as 28 Springfield Way, when fans know they live at 742 Evergreen Terrace. (EXPRESS)

The Kennedy Center says there are a significant number of “Hamilton” tickets left.

Tickets for Kennedy Center’s ‘Hamilton’ go on sale to the public at 8 a.m. Monday mislabeled ticket prices, performance dates that changed from selection to purchase, and high service fees. “The way this was handled was so poor. I wouldn’t contribute to them again,” said Raymond Scalettar of Potomac, Md., a donor who tried for 12 hours to score seats only to come away empty-handed. “They screwed up royally.” Kennedy Center officials say a significant number of tickets are still available for the 112 performances. Prices range from $99 to $199, with premium seats selling for $625. There will be 40 $10 orchestra seats sold for each performance, but further details about those tickets are not available. The Kennedy Center declined to say how many members it has, and its executives declined several requests for an interview. Computer problems also plagued the Kennedy Center members sale. The Kennedy Center announced that single tickets to “Hamilton” will go on sale at 8 a.m. Monday, March 26. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s awardwinning hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton and the Founding Fathers is set to run from June 12 through Sept. 16 in the 2,362-seat Opera House. Cue the collective angst. The public sale comes a month after the arts center’s priority sale for members, a 12-hour marathon on Feb. 28 that attracted as many as 80,000 users to an online waiting room where the majority never made it to the front of the line. arts center staffers have responded to many complaints and in several situations were able to fix problems. Stephanie Trachtenberg, a retired schoolteacher, was in the process of buying four seats when she was kicked out of the online box office. It was almost two weeks after the sale that she was finally able to buy four tickets. “For future events, I would not recommend this process. I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to get tickets,” the Burke, Va., resident said in an email. The Kennedy Center will use the same virtual waiting room for the March 26 sale. Delegate under fire for anti-Semitic rant

JAHI CHIKWENDIU (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT As D.C. Council member Trayon White, D-Ward 8, tried Monday to apologize for a Facebook post where he claimed Jewish financiers control the climate, new footage released by the city showed it wasn’t the first time he had made such remarks. White also contended during a Feb. 27 gathering of top city officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser and other Council members, that the Rothschilds — a European business dynasty and frequent subject of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories — control the World Bank and the federal government. “There’s this whole concept with the Rothschilds — control the World Bank as we all know — infusing dollars into major cities,” said White, according to video footage. “They really pretty much control the federal government and now they have this concept called Resilient Cities in which they are using their money and influence into local cities.” No one in the room challenged his remarks. Bowser wore a puzzled look; City Administrator Rashad Young explained the “resilient cities” initiative from the Rockefeller Foundation was

about helping communities prepare for disasters. White’s views didn’t draw public criticism until Sunday, when The Washington Post published an article about his recent Facebook posting that suggested a brief snowfall in D.C. was “climate control” by the Rothschilds, who “create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities.” After initially standing by his comments, White was met with a blizzard of criticism and later apologized, saying he did not realize his remarks were anti-Semitic. On Monday, the Council member fielded calls, texts and private meetings at City Hall, including with Rabbi Batya Glazer of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington

and Lou Dubin, a developer working on a project in Anacostia, which White represents. “I’ve been in conversations with a lot of people from the Jewish community coming to the office, especially those who know me, showing their support to me,” said White, who was elected to a four-year term in 2016. “It has been a learning experience for me.” It is unclear if the council will take any action to formally sanction White. “I take his apology as sincere and that’s all I’m going to say,” Chairman Phil Mendelson said as he left the closed-door meeting with White. “There’s no question it was inappropriate.” FENIT NIRAPPIL AND  PAUL SCHWARTZMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Winter storms to usher in start of spring A pair of back-to-back nor’easters are revving up to hit the East Coast on the official start of spring, when they’ll merge into the fourth storm to slam the region in a month. The National Weather Service said the bulk of the dangerous, wind-driven snow and sleet is expected to wallop New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and parts of Pennsylvania. Sleet and freezing rain are expected this afternoon, the first day of spring. A winter weather advisory has been issued for counties north of D.C. for this afternoon and a winter storm watch is in place for most of the region tonight into Wednesday. This watch indicates the potential for 5 or more inches of snow, but it is not an actual forecast for that amount. (AP/TWP)

‘VIGOROUS’ GUN CONTROL MEASURES

Over 125 local schools sign anti-gun letter

The leaders of more than 125 private independent schools in the D.C. area are calling on President Trump and Congress to enact “vigorous” gun control measures and warning that arming teachers — an idea the president supports — is “dangerous and antithetical to our profession as educators.” Participating in the plea is the school attended by Trump’s son Barron. The school leaders took out a full-page advertisement in Sunday’s editions of The Washington Post that refers to the Feb. 14 shooting deaths of 17 people at a Florida high school. (TWP)

After fourth blast, police warn of a ‘serial bomber’

BIRTH CONTROL

Daily male pill shows promise in early study

AUSTIN, TEXAS The hunt for the suspected serial bomber who has been leaving deadly explosives in Austin took an even more sinister turn Monday, when investigators said Sunday night’s fourth and latest blast had been triggered along a street by a nearly invisible tripwire. Police and federal agents said that suggests a “higher level of sophistication” than they have seen before, and means the carnage is now random, rather than targeted at someone in particular. “The game went up a little bit — well, it went up a lot yesterday, with the tripwire,” Christopher Combs, FBI agent in charge of the San Antonio division, said. Two people have now been killed and four wounded in bombings over a span of less than three weeks. The latest blast happened Sunday night in Austin’s Travis Country neighborhood, wounding two men in their 20s who were walking in the dark. They suffered what police said were significant injuries and remained hospitalized in stable condition. The three earlier bombings involved parcels that were left on doorsteps and blew up when they were moved or opened. Authorities repeated prior warnings about not touching

unexpected packages and also issued new ones to be wary of any stray object left in public, especially one with wires protruding. “We’re very concerned that with tripwires, a child could be walking down a sidewalk and hit something,” Combs said. Authorities said they are looking at a variety of possible motives, including domestic terrorism or a hate crime. Local and state police and hundreds of federal agents are investigating, and the reward for information in the case has climbed to $115,000. “We are clearly dealing with what we believe to be a serial bomber at this point,” Austin

Police Chief Brian Manley said, citing similarities among the four bombs. He would not elaborate, though, saying he didn’t want to undermine the investigation. While the first three bombings all occurred east of Interstate 35, a section of town that tends to be more heavily minority and less affluent, Sunday’s was west of the highway. Also, both victims this time are white, while those killed or wounded in the earlier attacks were black or Hispanic. Those differences made it harder to draw conclusions about a possible pattern, further unnerving a city on edge.

A male contraceptive pill could be on the horizon after early trials showed it to be safe and effective, researchers said Sunday at the Endocrine Society’s conference. The new pill, known as DMAU, contains a combination of hormones — an androgen, like testosterone, and progestin. The 83 men who completed the study were given different doses of DMAU or a placebo once a day. Men given the highest dose showed “marked suppression” of levels of their testosterone and two hormones used for sperm production, according to a press release. Participants had mild decreases in HDL, or “good” cholesterol, and slight weight g t gain. (EXPRESS)

The report says the reasons for the shortage include climate change, especially droughts; increased demand, as the global population grows to between 9.4 billion and 10.2 billion people; and water quality deterioration due to agricultural runoff. nation+world Erdogan vows to widen Syria operation beyond Afrin and even into Iraq MIDDLE EAST Turkey’s president on Monday vowed to expand military operations across northern Syria and even into neighboring Iraq after his forces drove Syrian Kurdish fighters from the northern Syrian town of Afrin. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the two-month-long Afrin campaign was the “most important phase” of the military operation launched on Jan. 20, which is aimed at driving Syrian Kurdish forces out of areas along the border. Turkey views the Syrian Kurdish militiamen as

terrorists because of their links to Kurdish insurgents fighting inside Turkey. Erdogan said Turkish troops and allied Syrian forces would now press eastward, toward the town of Manbij and areas east of the Euphrates River, including Ras al-Ayn and Ayn al-Arab, the Arabic name for the Kurdish town of Kobani. Those areas are controlled by U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish forces, and U.S. troops are stationed there. “We’ll continue this process until we completely abolish this corridor,” Erdogan said. Turkey first launched military operations in Syria in 2016, and Erdogan has repeatedly said it will not allow a “terror corridor” along its border. Erdogan said Turkish troops

could also cross into Iraq to drive out Kurdish militants from the region of Sinjar, if the Iraqi government does not act against

militants in the area. He said his forces might also go as far as Qamishli, a Syrian town where the Syrian government controls the airport and a security zone. The Syrian Kurdish People’s Defense Units, or YPG, withdrew from Afrin on Sunday after a Turkish thrust into the town center. They have vowed to continue the fight, using hit-and-run attacks against Turkish troops. On Monday, the European Union’s top diplomat criticized Turkey over its military offensive in Afrin, calling on Ankara to work to halt the fighting in Syria. A senior Kurdish official, Aldar Khalil, called the Turkish offensive an “occupation” that endangers the rest of the region.

TRANSPORTATION A self-driving Uber vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian in a Phoenix suburb in the first fatality involving a fully autonomous test vehicle, prompting the ride-hailing company Monday to suspend all road-testing of such autos in the U.S. and Canada. Depending on who is found to be at fault, the accident could have far-reaching consequences for the development of selfdriving vehicles, which have been billed as potentially safer than human drivers. The Volvo was in self-driving mode with a human operator behind the wheel when a woman walking outside a crosswalk in Tempe, Ariz., on Sunday night was hit, police said. The woman, identified as Elaine Herzberg, 49, died at a hospital. Uber suspended all of its self-driving vehicle testing in the Phoenix area, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto. The testing has been going on for months as automakers and tech companies compete to be the first with the technology. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi expressed condolences and said the company is working with local law enforcement on the investigation. Facebook under fire

Lawmakers from both parties call for tech giant to testify about user privacy issues Senators are pushing for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to appear on Capitol Hill.

Putin landslide raises prospect of leader for life

JEFF ROBERSON (AP)

TECHNOLOGY Congressional calls for Facebook to testify on Capitol Hill grew louder and more bipartisan Monday, as lawmakers demanded that the tech giant explain how a data analytics firm that worked for President Trump’s campaign obtained names, “likes” and other personal information on 50 million people. The increasingly sharp and personal tenor of the requests — many of which sought an appearance by chief executive Mark Zuckerberg — raised the odds for a fresh round of potentially contentious hearings, following lawmakers’ intense questioning of Facebook and two other technology companies last fall. “While Facebook has pledged to enforce its policies to protect people’s information, questions remain as to whether those policies are sufficient and whether Congress should take action to protect people’s private information,” wrote Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and John Neely Kennedy, R-La., in a joint letter to Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. In their note, which asked Grassley to convene a hearing, Klobuchar and Kennedy said the panel should invite Zuckerberg and also the top executives from Google and Twitter. Those companies also appeared in hearings in October and November, which focused on Russian manipulation of social media platforms to potentially affect the 2016 presidential election, but lawmakers now are aiming to grill Facebook on an even more sensitive matter: how it handles the personal information of its 2.1 billion users. “A hearing featuring testimony with CEOs would provide the Committee the opportunity

to hear an update on the progress of these companies’ voluntary measures to combat attempted foreign interference and what is being done to protect Americans’ data and limit abuse of the platforms, as well as to assess what measures should be taken before the next elections,” they added. Grassley has not yet scheduled such a hearing, and a spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Facebook has denied any wrongdoing. “We are in the process of conducting a comprehensive internal and external review as we work to determine the accuracy of the claims that the Facebook data in question still exists,” said Justin Osofsky, the vice president of global operations, in a statement. “That is where our focus lies as we remain committed to vigorously enforcing our policies to protect people’s information.” Facebook has weathered heavy criticism after a whistleblower

Tech stocks tumble Major stock indexes fell by more than 1 percent Monday, dragged down by shares of Facebook and other technology giants. Facebook shares, which have been a key driver of the recent boom in technology, closed down by nearly 7 percent. Overall, the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped as much as 2.5 percent but rallied later to close down 1.84 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average closed down roughly 335 points, a 1.35 percent decline. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index, a broader measure of stocks, dropped 1.42 percent. The biggest losers were information technology, health care and energy. (TWP)

revealed over the weekend that Cambridge Analytica, a data analysis firm that worked for Trump’s campaign, may have accessed the personal information of 50 million Facebook users without their permission.

Before changing its policies in 2014 and 2015, Facebook allowed developers of apps to gain detailed information on people who downloaded apps as well as their online “friends,” including names, education, work histories, birthdays, likes, locations, photos, relationship statuses, and religious and political affiliations. Such information can be extremely valuable to political campaigns for tailoring messages, ads and fundraising pitches. Cambridge Analytica gathered such information through a psychological testing app, called Thisisyourdigitallife, which offered personality predictions and billed itself as “a research app used by psychologists.” Facebook said 270,000 people downloaded the app. The New York Times and the Observer of London have reported that allowed the collection of data on 50 million “friends.” TONY ROMM AND CRAIG TIMBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Leaders across the former Soviet Union also have guaranteed themselves lifetime presidencies. It wouldn’t be hard for Putin to follow suit. He would have to change Russia’s constitution to get rid of term limits, but he has both houses of parliament at his service to approve it. Putin has faced this question before. In 2008, he had reached his limit of two four-year terms. So he anointed loyal associate Dmitry Medvedev as his candidate for president, and Medvedev named Putin prime minister. As president, Medvedev changed the constitution to extend presidential terms from four years to six. Putin returned as president in 2012. When his new term expires in 2024, Putin may find a malleable successor and create a new role for himself to run Russia behind the scenes. He’s not likely to do away with elections, because they give him democratic legitimacy in the West. Putin laughed off taking a six-year break after 2024 and reclaiming the presidency in 2030. The 65-year-old responded to a reporter: “Shall I sit here until I turn 100? No!” (AP)

Trump touts death penalty for dealers POLITICS Unveiling a long-awaited plan to combat the national scourge of opioid drug addiction, President Trump called Monday for stiffer penalties for drug traffickers, including embracing a tactic employed by some of the global strongmen he admires: the death penalty. “Toughness is the thing that they most fear,” Trump said. The president traveled to New Hampshire, a state ravaged by opioids and which is also an early marker for the re-election campaign he has already announced. He called for broadening awareness about drug addiction while expanding access to proven treatment and recovery efforts, but the backbone of his plan is to toughen the punishment for those caught trafficking highly addictive drugs. “ T h is isn’t about nice

anymore,” Trump said. “This is about winning a very, very tough problem, and if we don’t get very tough on these dealers, it’s not going to happen, folks.” The president formalized what he had long mused about publicly and privately: that if a person in the U.S. can get the death penalty or life in prison for shooting one person, a similar punishment should be given to a drug dealer who potentially kills thousands. Trump has long spoken approvingly about countries like Singapore that have fewer issues with drug addiction because they harshly punish their dealers. During a trip to Asia last fall, he did not publicly rebuke Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who has authorized extrajudicial killings of his nation’s drug dealers. Outside a local firehouse that Trump visited before the speech, someone held up a sign that said: “Donald J. Duterte.” “Drug traffickers kill so many thousands of our citizens every year,” Trump said. “That’s why my Department of Justice will be

Toughest abortion ban in nation signed into law

Progress seen on Brexit, but Irish border unsolved

Mississippi Republican Gov. Phil Bryant on Monday signed the nation’s tightest abortion restrictions into law. House Bill 1510 bans most abortions after 15 weeks’ gestation, with exceptions for health problems that make a fetus “incompatible with life” outside the womb, or if a pregnant woman’s life is threatened by the pregnancy. Pregnancies resulting from rape and incest aren’t exempted. (AP)

Negotiators from the European Union and Britain on Monday hailed major progress in the Brexit talks, but said they were struggling with how to keep the border between EU member state Ireland and U.K. territory Northern Ireland open to people, goods and services. The two sides also agreed on a transition period to ease Britain out of the EU, past its official leave date of March 29, 2019. (AP)

POLITICS President Trump’s attorneys have provided the special counsel’s office with written descriptions that chronicle key moments under investigation in hopes of curtailing the scope of a presidential interview, according to two people familiar with the situation. Trump’s lawyers are moving into what one adviser called “crunchtime” — reviewing likely questions from special counsel Robert Mueller’s team. The materials given to Mueller’s office include summaries of White House memos and contemporaneous correspondence about events Mueller is investigating, including the ousters of national security adviser Michael Flynn and FBI Director James B. Comey. The documents describe the White House players involved and Trump’s actions. Investigators have told Trump’s lawyers that their main questions fall into two categories, the two people said: “What did he do?” and “What was he thinking when he did it?” Trump’s lawyers expect Mueller’s team to ask whether Trump knew about Flynn’s communications with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the presidential transition. The records do not include Trump’s personal version of events, but a narrative of the White House view, the people said. CAROL D. LEONNIG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NCAA TOURNAMENT

Madness, indeed

First weekend of the tournament produces oduceess all kinds of stunners, including first victory ctory ryy by a No. 16 seed and a 22-point comeback ebaack a k MEN’S BASKETBALL One word succinctly describes what’s transpired so far in the NCAA Tournament: Madness. But even that’s probably underselling it. There was a comeback for the ages by Nevada and an entire region left without a top 4 seed in the Sweet 16 for the first time in tourney history. The 16-seed winner, UMBC, fell short in its attempt to extend its historic run as underdog darlings. Oh, and defending national champion North Carolina is out, routed in its own state by Texas A&M. And that was just Sunday, when No. 1 seed Xavier was bounced, too. A memorable, zany first two rounds — even by March Madness standards — set up what could be two more wild weekends. “It’s what makes March Madness special and it kills the coaches because it’s so hard and you think you have a great team,” Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said. Before the first tipoff Thursday, many experts deemed this tournament one of the most wide-open in recent history. It’s turned into a nutty, once-in-a-generation ride. Loyola-Chicago won two thrillers to get to the Sweet 16, making

a social media star out of their 98-year-old chaplain, Sister r Jean. And then the telegenic nun un who provides her own scouting ting reports got overshadowed d by the ultimate Cinderella team. am. The UMBC Retrievers rs became the first No. 16 seed in the he history of the men’s tournament nt to beat a No. 1 seed, defeating Virginia in the first round Friday night. By 20 points. Over the top overall ll seed eed and the unanimous No. 1 team in the AP poll. Including Xavier’s loss, it was only the fourth time that two No. 1 seeds were bounced in the first weekend. The Retrievers’ run ended Sunday night in a 50-43 loss to ninth-seeded Kansas State, but not before leaving a lasting imprint on American sports. “We put our name on the map. We [gave] hope to teams that come to the tournament with lower seeds,” guard K.J. Maura said. UMBC’s success story contributed to the unprecedentedly jumbled bracket in the South Region, where the highest-remaining seed is No. 5 Kentucky. It’s the first time in tourney history that a regional semifinal will be held without a top 4 seed. Seventh-seeded Nevada added to that by matching the secondbiggest comeback in tournament

Upsets bring big bucks The NCAA Tournament makes more than $700 million in revenue, and conferences get rewarded with bonuses called units, annual sums that pay out for six years. The units are worth about $273,000 this year and increase year by year. Teams earn a unit for every game they play, except for first-round games for automatic qualifiers and the title game. So No. 16 seed UMBC’s upset of No. 1 Virginia didn’t just get the Retrievers an extra game. It brought $1.7 million for the American East to distribute among its schools. (AP)

in my life. It’s the happiest I’ve ever seen. It’s the happiest I’ve ever been in my life,” Wolf Pack coach Eric Musselman said. The way reigning champion North Carolina got bounced from the tournament in an 86-65 loss to Texas A&M might have been the top storyline on a typical day. It left coach Roy Williams with the most lopsided tournament loss of his Hall of Fame career. It was also the second straight year the titleholder lost before the Sweet 16. And it happened in friendly Charlotte, N.C., where the Tar Heels hadn’t lost a tourney game since 1979. And in Detroit, Syracuse kept Michigan State from enjoying home cooking in a 55-53 win. Lue takes leave for health Cavs coach steps away indefinitely to address chest pains, sleep loss

NBA Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue is taking a leave of absence from the team to address health problems that have included chest pains and loss of sleep. Lue said in a statement Monday that tests have not offered a conclusive diagnosis nor a timetable for return, and he needs to “focus on trying to establish a stronger and healthier foundation.” The coach said he will focus on a “prescribed routine and medication” with the goal to “come out of it a stronger and healthier version of myself so I can continue to lead this team to the championship.” Associate head coach Larry Drew will lead the team in Lue’s

absence. A stress-filled season for the Cavs has taken a toll on Lue, 40, who led them to the 2016 NBA title after taking over for David Blatt midseason. They entered a Monday night game against the Bucks at 40-29, third in the Eastern Conference, and have endured roster shake-ups, injuries and other distractions as they

try to return to the NBA Finals. On Monday, the Cavaliers got All-Star forward Kevin Love back after he missed six weeks with a broken left hand. But they will have to adapt without their coach for an undetermined period. LeBron James was asked how Lue’s absence would impact the team. “We’re going to find out,” he said. “It’s tough.” (AP)

CAPITALS On Feb. 27, Travis Boyd arrived in Washington with enough clothes to last him just a week. The 24-year-old had paid his dues in the minor leagues, so the Capitals wanted him around for the final quarter of the season. Still, cracking the lineup would be a challenge with two forwards ahead of him in the pecking order. Then on Sunday morning, Boyd attended a pregame meeting in Philadelphia and was told he’d be in the lineup for the fifth NHL game of his career. The bigger surprise was where coach Barry Trotz intended to play him: between Tom Wilson and superstar captain Alex Ovechkin, essentially as a first-line center. “Trotz talked to me before the game and just said, ‘Don’t worry about it, just go out there and play hockey,’ ” Boyd said. “I thought we did a decent job.” By second intermission, Boyd had already made the highlight reel, spinning as he threaded a puck through two Flyers players. Ovechkin went to the front of the net and tipped Boyd’s pass for

Travis Boyd, 24, was called up from Hershey on Feb. 27 and posted his first NHL point on an assist Sunday.

Washington’s first goal of what was ultimately a 6-3 loss. But right after Ovechkin scored, he pointed to Boyd, acknowledging the rookie’s slick move in earning the first NHL point of his career. Evgeny Kuznetsov is doubtful for tonight’s home game against Dallas (7, NBCSWA) with an undisclosed “upper-body” injury that opened the door for Boyd in the first place. So Boyd could continue as his temporary replacement. “He’s very intelligent, he’s got poise with the puck. … He just needs some experience,” Trotz said of Boyd, who scored 16 goals with 47 assists for Hershey last season. Too young, thin, white? Exercisers say boutique studios can alienate minorities and older, heavier people TRENDS After a few committed months of hot yoga at a studio in New York, Christina Rice had found her niche. So when the studio announced that it was offering teacher training, she signed up. But she noticed something striking. There were 54 other women and men in the 10-week course, and not one of them looked like her. She was the lone African-American in the class. “I did feel very isolated at times,” says Rice. “There were no teachers of color. I didn’t have another woman who looked like me, who understood my struggles, my insecurities.” Boutique workout studios — specialized, exercise-specific gyms — are exploding in gentrifying urban areas. They include not only hot yoga but also CrossFit, Barry’s Bootcamp, SoulCycle and Orangetheory. But some people have begun to question the differences between the studios and the neighborhood YMCA. Like the prices:

In Washington, a single 50-minute Barry’s Bootcamp class is $34. Spinning studio Flywheel charges $30. Solidcore, a Pilateslike workout, can run as much as $37. And sweat through a class in one of these studios and it’s very possible that you’ll see it, too: many lithe young white bodies and very few people of color. Or older or heavier exercisers. Leticia Long, who is AfricanAmerican and Hispanic, is struck by what she sees at SoulCycle and Orangetheory classes. “What is their messaging saying about aging? What is fit? What is beauty? I look at everything from the signage to the marketing materials,” she says. All she sees is millennials. “How open and inclusive is that?” SoulCycle chief executive Melanie Whelan described her company’s effort to maintain a team of instructors who give “riders a range of genders, races, backgrounds and personalities to identify with.” Barry’s Bootcamp

declined a request for comment, while Flywheel did not respond. Jessamyn Stanley, a North Carolina-based yoga teacher and author, describes the studios she has visited as anything but diverse. She tackles that in her book “Every Body Yoga.” The issue, she says, extends beyond race. She’s often the only fat woman in the room as well, she says. And if you’re looking for a mature crowd, you’ll have to keep looking, too: By the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association’s reckoning, the average age

of studio exercisers is 30. “The messaging,” says Stanley, “is essentially: You’re allowed in this space if you are white, slender, able-bodied and less than 45, cis-gender and heterosexual.” What makes such studios appealing, a spokeswoman for the health club association says, is “the sense of belonging, where everyone is ‘like them.’ ” What they foster is known in the business as “tribes,” spandex-clad warriors s r who feel a special kinship after e enduring burpees together. The tribe model encourages adher-ence, but it has downsides. “If you’re trying to get a selectt group of people by saying, ‘This s workout is really hard,’ you’re e sending a message to unfit peo-ple,” says Todd Miller, director off George Washington University’s s Weight Management and Human n Performance Laboratory. “‘Don’tt come here, because you’re nott wanted.’ You’re making it unap-pealing to the people who need d it the most.” LAVANYA RAMANATHAN N

Containers to buy for storing food If you do a lot of meal prepping, you most likely have a ton of containers. Maybe some are missing lids; maybe some reek of plastic. Maybe it’s time for a container overhaul. Kim Kimbriel, a buyer for the Container Store, recommends buying plastic containers for lunch on the go, and glass ones for storing freezer meals, since glass is more airtight. Also, containers with silicone gaskets and lids that snap on all four sides are especially effective at keeping food fresh. There have been other userfriendly developments in food storage. Many manufacturers no longer make plastics with bisphenol A (BPA), the controversial chemical that has been linked to possible health risks. BECKY KRYSTAL (TWP)

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

When to reveal a school switcheroo Q. My husband and I are pulling our kids from the private school they’ve gone to since kindergarten (they are in third and second grade) and putting them into the neighborhood public school next fall. I want to tell them right away so they can prepare for it as the school year ends. My husband thinks that will make them too sad for too long and that it is fine to spring it on them toward the end of the summer. WANT TO DO RIGHT BY THE KIDS What a great opportunity for me to launch the Happy Medium Protocol! The school year is not nearly over yet, so telling them now seems premature and may invite extra months of pushback or distress. But letting your kids be able to end the year fully aware that they won’t be back, so that they can be mindful in how they say their goodbyes, is a kindness.

So I advocate for a few weeks before the school year ends. The exact timing can vary depending on what you anticipate their individual challenges and reactions to be. But the more you have a specific plan for them to visualize — a tour of the school, an acquaintance who already goes there — the less scary and disruptive the transition will be.

a weight-loss goal. I have worked hard and changed my food and exercise habits. Though I still have a way to go, I want to buy new clothes for spring. I am planning a big trip to the outlet stores and my best friend who always shops with me keeps backing out. She is overweight herself and has not put in the work to take off the weight. I don’t know whether she is backing out because of jealousy and I should be sensitive about this. IN A QUANDARY I want to assume that your sensitivity is a given, but a couple of phrases made my hair stand on end, “has not put in the work” among them. It’s not a wrong attitude, per se, but if she has any baggage about weight, she might be getting bruised — and you might be a little tone-deaf to it. But you wrote, so that’s a start! I don’t know what “keeps backing out” means — coincidental scheduling snafus once or twice? Or consistent, clear signals that she wants no part of this? — but it seems reasonable that if this is a departure from her usual shopping behavior, you should give her some space and go get those macrame crop tops alone. And he’s branching out with his first children’s book, October’s “Elbow Grease.” SANDY COHEN (AP) Why do you connect with kids? I love energy and I love excitement, and I think kids have the same. They have such a lust for life, such an honest and genuine attack on every day. And their emotions — they don’t hide how they feel. I think that’s really what connects me to young people: They’ll give it to you straight.

You wrote a children’s book that follows an undersized monster truck with big determination. It’s about the values that it’s taken me four decades on this planet to learn, like don’t be afraid to try something new, because if you don’t try anything new, you’ll never learn anything. Don’t be afraid to go out of your
