A Sacramento, Calif., animal shelter is seeking supplies and cash donations to care for nearly 300 rabbits taken from a single property. Folsom Police Detective Donald Rowberry says officers were responding to a separate call when they looked over a fence and spotted about 100 rabbits. The officers called for backup and found many more bunnies hopping in unsanitary living conditions. City code allows only two rabbits per home. (AP)

Police say a 19-year-old Indiana man took a cab to and from a bank robbery and that he paid the driver with some of his stolen cash. Derrick Faria was arrested less than an hour after Thursday’s robbery of a Fifth Third Bank branch in Evansville. Faria reportedly passed a teller a note demanding money, but didn’t show a weapon. Police recovered all the money, except $20 — the $14 for the cab fare and a $6 tip for the driver. (AP)

A male gorilla at the Philadelphia Zoo apparently is a neat freak. When 18-year-old Louis has his hands full of tomatoes or other snacks, he walks upright like a human to keep food and hands clean, rather than the typical gorilla stance of leaning forward on his knuckles. Workers even had to install a fire hose over a mud puddle in the yard for Louis to cross like a tight rope to avoid getting dirty. Gorillas rarely walk upright in the wild. (AP)

Victory on court, Twitter MARYLAND In the wee hours of Saturday morning, when the University of Maryland-Baltimore County’s monumental 74-54 victory over top-ranked Virginia — the first win by a No. 16 seed over a No. 1 seed in the history of the men’s NCAA Tournament — was still fresh, many people were introduced for the first time to UMBC. The 13,600-student school sits just outside Baltimore and had made only one other NCAA Tournament appearance in its history. But to understand the soul of UMBC, people only needed to open Twitter and click “Follow” on the @UMBCAthletics account — something tens of thousands of people did. An account that had about 5,400 followers at Friday night’s tipoff at Charlotte’s Spectrum Center was up to more than 98,000 by Sunday evening. Zach Seidel, a 27-year-old alumnus of the school, the son of two other alumni and the current director of multimedia communications, is the person who manned the @UMBCAthletics account — with an expert mix of humanity and snark — during

and after the historic victory. Seidel, a native of Pikesville, Md., has heard all the put-downs and slights leveled at UMBC — not only “University of Maryland Backup College” but also “commuter school” and “satellite campus.” None of the characterizations are true. “The chip on our shoulder is that people think there’s an inferiority complex,” Seidel said. It was Seidel’s relaxed, pointed humor — helped, of course, by UMBC’s almost unimaginable

“We don’t feel inferior to College Park. ... We know how good our school is. We know we have the best college president in the country.” ZACH SEIDEL, the man behind UMBC’s Twitter account, sharing how much he loves the school

upset — that propelled his tweets into viral territory. He used Seth Davis as a foil, pinging the CBS analyst multiple times over a dismissive tweet Davis sent just minutes into the game (“Virginia. Sharpie,” meaning he already had advanced Virginia’s name as the winner in his bracket). When the game was over, Seidel dredged up a pregame analysis from ESPN showing UMBC with a 1.5 percent chance of winning, and added, “Sup.” Seidel’s tweet at the moment the victory was official, at 11:34 p.m., was the only one he had even semi-planned in advance, deciding on it midway through the second half. “PUT SOME RESPECK ON IT!” he wrote. And at that moment — and well into the weekend and maybe even until today, depending on how the Retrievers played against Kansas State on Sunday night — that phrase served as the perfect distillation of the soul of UMBC, a school upon which everyone, even those who never heard of it until Friday night, must finally put some respeck. Metro’s $15.5B plan

Metro funding could hurt NoVa traffic projects

(THE WASHINGTON POST)

ROBERT McCARTNEY (TWP)

MARK WILSON (GETTY IMAGES)

For example, the 10-year plan would direct funding to a track rehabilitation plan to repair the “80 percent” of the system that wasn’t covered by the year-long SafeTrack program. It would pay for a yearly initiative to swap out old components, including railroad crossovers, wooden crossties, metal fasteners and third-rail insulators, based on condition. It also would allow Metro to finish upgrading its radio systems and cellphone communications infrastructure, a project that is expected to cost $332 million and be completed by 2022. “I find that we are already seeing readily discernible improvements with the capital investments we’re making — by accelerating the purchase of 7000-series trains, improved quality of service,” said Stewart Schwartz, executive director of the pro-transit Coalition for Smarter Growth. Schwartz said he is hopeful that as service improves, Metro can take a look at a return to more frequent service and longer service hours. FAIZ SIDDIQUI

TRANSPORTATION Despite enthusiasm in Northern Virginia for the state’s landmark Metro funding bill, the plan threatens to exact a higher-thanexpected cost in delaying or killing several road projects that would relieve some of the region’s most severe traffic headaches. The legislation approved by the General Assembly this month would take more than $100 million a year from funds used in the chronically gridlocked suburbs to widen roads, improve intersections and otherwise battle congestion. The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, the primary agency responsible for planning, prioritizing and paying for such projects, estimates it would lose more than a quarter of its annual revenue in money that the bill diverts to Metro. Major projects that could be slowed include widening Route 1 in Fairfax County and improving Route 28 in Prince William and Fairfax counties. “It’s a lot of money [lost] when you add it up,” said state Sen. Scott A. Surovell, D-Fairfax. To try to limit the damage, local officials and lawmakers are pressing Gov. Ralph Northam to propose amendments to the legislation to tap different sources for the money for Metro. “I’d like to have the governor restore about $43 million” of the total lost under the bill, Fairfax Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova said.

Agency would transform fleet, chip away at safety backlog if it could get dedicated funding from D.C., Virginia and Maryland TRANSPORTATION First off, don’t expect a glitzy new passageway through the Rosslyn bottleneck or a fleet of autonomous buses to carry Metro into the self-driving age. A new tunnel to permanently fix the leaky western segment of the Red Line, an area prone to arcing insulators, isn’t in the plans either. For Metro riders watching as the agency inches toward securing $500 million in annual dedicated funding, the most realistic outcome is that the $15.5 billion it says it needs over 10 years could restore Metro’s standing by overhauling degraded tracks, maximizing train capacity and assuring fewer of the routine disruptions commuters have grown so used to, according to the agency’s 10-year capital needs inventory. The transit agency would stretch the annual funding into $15.5 billion by turning to the bond market. It’s an urgent injection of funding to chip away at a maintenance backlog built up over decades, agency leaders contend. Metro would embark on power upgrades to fuel all eight-car trains, modernize the vast majority of

expressline

its railcar fleet and repair tracks and structural components that have been neglected. The agency would replace a pair of crumbling bus garages and undergo a sweeping replacement of track circuits critical to detecting the locations of trains. By 2026, Metro would reduce its $6.8 billion repair backlog to just over $2 billion, the plan says. (By contrast, the backlog merely drops from $6.8 billion in 2017 to $6.6 billion in 2018, according to Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly.) The transit agency is fast approaching a milestone after the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation this month to provide Metro with $154 million in annual capital revenue — with the District and Maryland expected to follow suit with their own contributions totaling the $500 million Metro is seeking. Metro general manager Paul Wiedefeld has said that to ensure a safe, reliable system, Metro needs $15.5 billion over 10 years, including $500 million a year in dedicated funding — a reliable revenue source that Metro alone lacks compared to its peers. But for

“The reason why the $500 million in Metro funding is so critical is … by providing it we’re reducing the need to further cut service or raise fares.” STEWART SCHWARTZ, executive director of the pro-transit Coalition for Smarter Growth, on the importance of annual dedicated funding for the transit agency

those who aren’t versed in the nuances of the funding fight, there’s a key question: What would that money buy? The short answer, agency and local officials say, is time. Wiedefeld has said the funds are for “nonnegotiable” safety fixes and essential system upgrades, and has hinted that he would step down if the agency doesn’t receive enough funding to ensure safety.

Man beaten at racist rally found not guilty of assault

Maryland Senate advances Amazon headquarters bill

A Maryland sheriff’s office said dozens of dead horses were discovered strewn across a farm in various states of decay. Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis told The Daily News of Salisbury that an investigation was launched Friday into the 25 dead horses found on the 2-acre property. A dead foal lay steps from the front door of the owner’s home. Maryland property records show Clayton P. and Barbara L. Pilchard own the farm. Lewis said Friday that Barbara Pilchard had said she saw nothing wrong with leaving the carcasses to decay. More than 200 cats were removed from the same property in 1995. (AP)

A black man who was severely beaten the day of a violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., and then charged with misdemeanor assault in the same incident was found not guilty Friday. A Charlottesville judge acquitted 20-year-old DeAndre Harris, saying it was clear Harris didn’t intend to harm the leader of a Southern nationalist group who made a complaint against him. Photos and videos of the Aug. 12 attack on Harris by a group of men in a parking garage were widely shared online. Harris was left with serious injuries. Four men have been charged in connection with the attack on Harris. (AP)

An incentive package of more than $5 billion to try to lure Amazon’s second headquarters to Maryland has moved closer to passage in the Senate. The Senate gave the measure preliminary approval Friday. Senators could vote on the bill tonight. The measure includes a package of state income, property and sales tax credits. The state also is considering transportation enhancements. The measure would not take effect if Amazon decides against putting the headquarters in the state. Gov. Larry Hogan submitted the proposal to the General Assembly. Montgomery County is one of 20 cities and regions that made Amazon’s shortlist. (AP)

Gambling in cards for Va. Pamunkey tribe looking for location for $700M hotel and casino center VIRGINIA Virginia’s first casino could be in the cards, now that officials of an Indian tribe that recently won federal recognition have started to look for land to house a $700 million resort and gambling center. venue and hotel with more than 1,200 rooms, according to documents from the tribe. Talks of a casino run by the Pamunkey, who claim ancestral ties to Pocahontas, are not new but became more tangible after the community officially won federal recognition as a Native American tribe in 2015. The status gave the Pamunkey various benefits and rights, such as access to federal grants, housing and educational opportunities. The federal approval also enabled the tribe to pursue a gambling development despite Virginia’s long-held ban

on casino gambling, a venture that tribal leaders hope will make the Pamunkey less dependent on government programs. “Federal recognition and the opportunities that it brings will mean greater job opportunities, more educational opportunities and the ability to provide better access to housing for our aging tribe members,” Pamunkey Chief Robert Gray said Saturday in a statement to The Washington Post. “The resort is just a piece of that bigger vision and hope for our future.” LYNH BUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Russians line up Sunday to vote for president at a polling station inside the Kazansky railway terminal in Moscow.

Putin overwhelmingly wins another 6 years Claims of forced voting unlikely to dilute power of Russia’s president RUSSIA Vladimir Putin rolled to a crushing re-election victory Sunday for six more years as Russia’s president, and he told cheering supporters in a triumphant but brief speech that “we are bound for success.” There had been no doubt that Putin would win in his fourth electoral contest; he faced seven minor candidates and his most prominent foe, anti-corruption campaigner Alexei Navalny, was blocked from the ballot. His only real challenge was to run up the tally so high that he could claim an indisputable mandate. With ballots from 80 percent of

Russia’s precincts counted by early Monday, Putin had amassed 76 percent of the vote. P utin comPutin mands immense loyalty among Russians. More than 30,000 crowded into Manezh Square adjacent to the Kremlin in temperatures of 15 degrees for a victory concert and to await his words. In a brief speech, Putin praised supporters, telling them, “I am a member of your team,” and promising that “we are bound for success.” Russia’s stability under Putin has been bolstered by a suppression of dissent, the withering of independent media and the topdown control of politics, called “managed democracy.” There were widespread reports

of forced voting Sunday, efforts to make Russia appear to be a robust democracy. Among them were two election observers in Gorny Shchit, a rural district of Yekaterinburg, who told The Associated Press they saw an unusually high influx of people going to the polls between noon and 2 p.m. A doctor at a hospital in the city in the Ural Mountains told the AP that 2 p.m. was the deadline for health officials to report to their superiors that they had voted. Other examples from observers and social media included ballot boxes being stuffed with extra ballots in multiple regions; an election official assaulting an observer; discrepancies in ballot numbers; and last-minute voter registration changes. Rumored site of Union gold in the spotlight DENTS RUN, PA. As a 155-year-old legend goes, a Union Army wagon train left Wheeling, W.Va., before the Battle of Gettysburg, carrying 2 tons of gold, but it never completed its 400-mile mission. The gold was supposed to be used to pay Union soldiers. But it first had to make it to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. It never did. Searchers eventually found the wagons and the bodies of soldiers in Pennsylvania — and the gold was gone. But maybe not forever. On Friday, FBI agents, Pennsylvania state officials and members of a treasure-hunting group were buzzing around the state forest at Dents Run, 27 miles southeast of St. Marys. It’s the site where the treasurehunting group, Finders Keepers, says as much as $55 million in lost Union gold could be buried. In 2012, Finders Keepers members said they’d found the location of the gold using metal detectors. But the site is on state land, where it is illegal to dig without permits. And they didn’t find gold on the surface — just evidence that soldiers had camped there. The group’s permit was denied. But Friday, The Associated Press reported that Finders Keepers was on site, along with state officials. However, they were keeping mum about what they were doing. A group leader said, “All we’re allowed to say is ‘no comment.’” CLEVE R. WOOTSON JR. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Kushner Cos. filed false NYC housing paperwork BUSINESS When the Kushner Cos. bought three apartment buildings in a gentrifying neighborhood of Queens in 2015, most of the tenants were protected by special rules that prevent developers from pushing them out, raising rents and turning a tidy profit. But that’s exactly what the company then run by Jared Kushner did, and with remarkable speed. Two years later, it sold all three building for $60 million, nearly 50 percent more than it paid. Now a clue has emerged as to how President Trump’s

son-in-law’s firm was able to move so fast: The Kushner Cos. routinely filed false paperwork with the city declaring it had zero rent-regulated tenants in dozens of buildings it owned across the city when, in fact, it had hundreds. Kushner Cos. said in a statement that it outsources the preparation of such documents to third parties that are reviewed by independent counsel, and “if mistakes or violation are identified, corrective action is taken immediately.” Housing Rights Initiative found the Kushner Cos. filed at least 80 false applications for construction

Trump blasts Mueller

Facebook faces privacy claim Possible breach of FTC consent decree could lead to massive fines WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX

McCabe could be a motivated Trump enemy

GETTY IMAES

POLITICS President Trump on Sunday took out his frustrations over the intensifying Russia investigation by lashing out at special counsel Robert Mueller, signaling a possible shift away from a strategy of cooperating with a probe he believes is biased against him. In a series of weekend tweets naming Mueller for the first time, Trump criticized the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and raised fresh concerns about the objectivity and political leanings of the members of Mueller’s team. Trump also challenged the honesty of Andrew McCabe, the newly fired FBI deputy director, and James Comey, the former FBI director whom Trump fired last year over the Russia probe. The president’s aggressive stance followed a call Saturday by his personal lawyer for Rod Rosenstein — whom Trump appointed as deputy attorney general and who now oversees Mueller’s inquiry — to “bring an end” to that investigation. “The Mueller probe should never have been started in that there was no collusion and there was no crime,” Trump tweeted Saturday. “It was based on fraudulent activities and a Fake Dossier paid for by Crooked Hillary and the DNC, and improperly used in FISA COURT for surveillance of my campaign. WITCH HUNT!” Trump was referring to a dossier of anti-Trump research funded by the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Likely adding to Trump’s frustration, The New York Times reported last week that Mueller had subpoenaed the Trump Organization and requested Russiarelated documents. Trump had said Mueller would cross a red line with such a step.

President Trump’s attacks on special counsel Robert Mueller have raised concerns he may try to have Mueller fired.

“Why does the Mueller team have 13 hardened Democrats, some big Crooked Hillary supporters, and Zero Republicans?” Trump tweeted Sunday. Some of Mueller’s investigators indeed have contributed to Democratic political candidates, but Justice Department policy and federal service law bar discrimination in the hiring of career positions on the basis of political affiliation. Mueller is a Republican. Trump’s attacks raised new concerns among members of Congress that he could be seeking to orchestrate Mueller’s firing. Republican and Democratic lawmakers warned Trump to not even think about it. “If he tried to do that, that would be the beginning of the end of his presidency,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a Trump ally. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., called for the passage of bipartisan bills designed to protect Mueller that

New job for McCabe? At least one congressman has offered newly fired deputy FBI director Andrew McCabe a temporary job so he can get full retirement benefits. Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., said Saturday that he has offered McCabe a job working on election security in his office, “so that he can reach the needed length of service” to retire. McCabe was fired late Friday night, just hours before he was set to retire with full benefits. With 20 years of service under his belt, he would likely need just another day or so working in any federal job to earn the benefits. A spokeswoman for McCabe said, “We are considering all options.” (TWP)

have stalled in Congress. “This president is engaged in desperate and reckless conduct to intimidate his law enforcement agencies of this country and to try and stop the special counsel. That is unacceptable

U.S. probes 4 deaths in Hyundai-Kia cars when air bags failed to inflate in crashes

in a democracy,” Durbin said. Trump cannot directly fire Mueller, who can only be dismissed for cause. Any dismissal of Mueller would have to be carried out by Rosenstein, who has publicly expressed his support for Mueller. Trump may have felt emboldened after Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe on Friday. “A great day for Democracy,” Trump tweeted afterward. A lso over the weekend, Trump’s personal lawyer, John Dowd, reacted to the news of McCabe’s firing by suggesting that Rosenstein should follow the “brilliant and courageous example” of Sessions and the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility and “bring an end” to the Russia investigation “manufactured” by Comey. In response, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., said: “If you have an innocent client, Mr. Dowd, act like it.” DARLENE SUPERVILLE (AP)

Might President Trump’s decision to have FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe fired just hours before he was due to retire come back to bite him? Trump has now, after all, cemented the enemy status of a top-ranking official at the FBI (its No. 2) and onetime acting director. He previously did that by firing McCabe’s superior, former FBI Director James B. Comey, and Comey has rewarded that decision by leaking unhelpful things and testifying about Trump in a negative light. Comey is now set to release a book. But the McCabe and Comey situations are also somewhat different. Trump arguably terminated Comey more out of fear of how he was conducting the Russia investigation; Trump appears to have gone after McCabe because of a vendetta and possibly to send a signal to others in law enforcement who might run afoul of the president. McCabe is clearly incensed by the decision. He released a lengthy statement deriding his firing as “slander” and suggesting that the whole thing was part of a campaign to undermine the investigations involving Trump. The question now is: What does McCabe know, and how hard does he push back? Having his name dragged through the mud could temper McCabe’s public comments. But if it doesn’t, Trump has just created a very motivated enemy. AARON BLAKE

TECHNOLOGY Two former federal officials who crafted the consent decree governing how Facebook handles user privacy say the company may have violated that decree when it shared information from tens of millions of users with a data analysis firm that later worked for President Trump’s 2016 campaign. Such a violation, if confirmed by the Federal Trade Commission, could lead to enormous fines, said David Vladeck, who as the director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection oversaw an investigation of alleged privacy violations by Facebook and the subsequent consent decree resolving the case in 2011. Vladeck said in a Sunday interview with The Washington Post that Facebook’s sharing of data with Cambridge Analytica “raises serious questions about compliance with the FTC consent decree.” The FTC did not respond to requests for comment Sunday. Facebook has denied violating the consent decree when it allowed an app developer for Cambridge Analytica to gain access to information from 270,000 Facebook users who downloaded a psychological testing app, and from their Facebook “friends.” Vladeck said violations of the consent decree could carry a penalty of $40,000 per violation,

Lawmakers warn president that firing the special counsel would be a grave mistake

Lawmakers probing Facebook’s privacy practices are calling for founder Mark Zuckerberg to testify in person.

meaning if news reports that the data of 50 million people were shared prove true, the company’s possible exposure runs into the trillions of dollars. Lawmakers have called for answers from both Cambridge Analytica and Facebook — in some cases demanding Facebook

chief executive Mark Zuckerberg appear at legislative hearings. The FTC consent decree required that users explicitly give their permission before their data was shared, Vladeck said. The developer of the app sought permission from users but not their Facebook friends. The app,

“thisisyourdigitallife,” offered personality predictions and billed itself on Facebook as “a research app used by psychologists.” The data collected by the app reportedly was shared with Cambridge Analytica and used to help the firm build profiles of individual voters and their political preferences to better target advertising to them. Cambridge Analytica has denied wrongdoing. Vladeck’s view was echoed by Jessica Rich, the former deputy director for the Bureau of Consumer Protection, who oversaw the FTC’s privacy program and led the investigation before the 2011 consent decree. She said Facebook’s reported action, if true, “bespeaks the same recklessness with its users’ data that prompted the FTC to take action in 2011.” “Facebook can look forward to ... potentially a whole lot of liability here,” Rich said. Before the consent decree, consumer watchdog groups urged the FTC to investigate Facebook on the grounds that it deceived consumers, changing the way it handled sensitive information with little warning. The FTC agreed in November 2011, faulting Facebook for making information such as friend lists viewable by the public without first obtaining permission. The FTC then required Facebook to obtain consumers’ consent before “enacting changes that override their privacy practices.” CRAIG TIMBERG AND TONY ROMM (THE WASHINGTON POST)

AN EARLY INDICATION

Young John Glenn laid his head among the stars

If a childhood memento is any indication, John Glenn, the late U.S. senator and space hero, knew his career path from an early age. A child’s pillowcase identified as belonging to Glenn, who died in 2016, was purchased this month at an estate sale organized by Glenn’s children. The pillowcase shows a koala bear gripping a spacecraft as it flies among stars and planets. The craft bears a simple blue label: “John.” (AP)

Police say all six victims found in bridge collapse Five bodies were extricated Saturday from the wreckage of a pedestrian bridge that collapsed Thursday near Miami. With a sixth person who died at a hospital, authorities said Saturday that they thought they had accounted for all those killed. An engineer responsible for the bridge left a voicemail for a state transportation official two days before the crash, warning of “some cracking,” officials said Friday. (TWP) POLITICS

Lawyer: Stormy Daniels faced physical threats A porn actress who said she had sex with Donald Trump before he became president has been threatened with physical harm, her attorney said Friday. Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has been seeking to invalidate a nondisclosure agreement she signed days before the 2016 election — she now wants to be free to discuss their relationship. Lawyers for Trump, in a filing late Friday, claimed Clifford could owe more than $20 million in damages for violating the agreement. (AP)

Weekend signings

The NFL free agent market continued to percolate this weekend after the initial surge of high-profile quarterback signings. Here are three of the most notable moves.

Wolfpack grad transfer Leslie kickstarts stingy defense, helps bounce her old team N.C. STATE 74, MARYLAND 60 Kiara Leslie shot her alma mater out of the women’s NCAA Tournament — and sent N.C. State to its first Sweet 16 since Kay Yow’s inspirational run. Leslie, a graduate transfer guard who played three seasons at Maryland, scored 21 points with 11 rebounds against her former team in a 74-60 win Sunday in Raleigh, N.C. She finished one point shy of a career high while also shutting down the Terps’ leading scorer, Kaila Charles. “My teammates knew that this game was important to me,” Leslie said. “And I think they helped me get comfortable and

get open shots.” Kalia Ealey and Aislinn Konig added 12 points apiece while Akela Maize scored 11 to help the fourth-seeded Wolfpack (26-8) earn their first Sweet 16 appearance since Yow, their late Hall of Fame coach, led them that far in 2007 upon her return from battling cancer. “I think she’d be proud of this team,” said coach Wes Moore, a former Yow assistant. N.C. State, which shot 45 percent and was 7-of-14 from 3-point range, will play the Oklahoma State-Mississippi State winner on Friday night in the Kansas City Regional semifinals. for the fifth-seeded Terrapins (26-8), who shot 37 percent. Kaila Charles was plagued by foul trouble and pestered by Leslie. Charles finished with four points — 14 below her average — on 2-of-8 shooting before fouling out with 2:29 left.

Maryland’s offense, which averages 80 points, had trouble scoring against one of the nation’s stingiest defenses. N.C. State allows 56.7 points per game, and only one team in the past two months — topseeded Notre Dame — has reached 70 against the Wolfpack. “I thought their defensive intensity, their pressure, really made us struggle,” coach Brenda Frese said. Maryland missed all five of its 3-pointers. Kristen Confroy, who is third in the nation from long range at 40.3 percent, couldn’t even get one off and failed to score in her final college game.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu, 25, played in all 16 games in 2017 but was cut by Arizona after refusing to take a pay cut. He was All-Pro in 2015.

2 Jensen to Tampa Bay Four years, $42 million

Ryan Jensen, a former sixthround pick of the Ravens, is now the highest-paid center ($10.25 million per year) in the league. He turns 27 in May.

Glen Davis disputes charges

Former NBA power forward Glen “Big Baby” Davis was arrested at a hotel in a Baltimore suburb last month with a quarter of a pound of marijuana, $92,000 in cash and a ledger allegedly listing clients, authorities said. In a video posted Saturday on Instagram, Davis denied the charges. “I will have my day in court,” he said. “ They just mad ’cause a black man got money, man.” (TWP) Olympic wrestling champ Kyle Snyder of Ohio State ends college career with 3rd NCAA title

The last team selected for the field of 68 is going to the Sweet 16. Tyus Battle had 17 points and Oshae Brissett scored 15, lifting 11th-seeded Syracuse to a 55-53 win over third-seeded Michigan State on Sunday in Detroit. Cassius Winston missed an opportunity to win the game for the Spartans with a shot from about 45 feet just before the buzzer. Michigan State, flummoxed by Syracuse’s 2-3 zone, didn’t make a basket in the last 5:41. The Orange (23-13) forced the Spartans (30-5) to settle for 3-pointers all afternoon, which worked brilliantly in a matchup of Hall of Fame coaches, Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim and Michigan State’s Tom Izzo. The Spartans took a school record 37 shots beyond the arc, making just eight. “No one plays zone like we do,” Brissett said. “We’re always moving, and we challenge every shot, so teams never get easy looks.” Syracuse has won three straight since being sent to Dayton for the First Four as what the selection committee chairman acknowledged was the final team to receive an at-large bid. Syracuse took the lead with 4:22 left for the first time since it was ahead 14-12. The Orange forced the Spartans to miss their last 13 shots. Star sophomore Miles Bridges was held scoreless for much of the first half and finished with 11 points for Michigan State, which shot just 26 percent. LARRY LAGE (AP)

7-foot-3 Matt Haarms of Purdue filled in for center Isaac Haas, who broke his elbow in a victory Friday.

Dakota Mathias sank a 3-pointer with 14.2 seconds left, and second-seeded Purdue, minus star center Isaac Haas, held off 10thseeded Butler 76-73 on Sunday in Detroit to reach the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive year. The Boilermakers (30-6) led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but Butler (21-14) cut the deficit to two and had the ball in the final minute. Kelan Martin missed a 3-pointer, and the shot by Mathias at the other end made it 76-71. Martin scored with 2.1 seconds remaining, and Purdue’s P.J. Thompson missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Butler another chance. The Bulldogs

called a timeout with 1.8 seconds left, and Kamar Baldwin’s shot from near midcourt hit the rim. Purdue’s Vincent Edwards scored 20 points despite early foul trouble, and Matt Haarms filled in capably for the injured Haas. The Boilermakers set a school record for victories in a season and are in the regional semifinals for the fourth time under coach Matt Painter. Purdue faces third-seeded Texas Tech on Friday in Boston. Haas, the 7-foot-2 center who broke his elbow in Friday’s win over Cal State Fullerton, warmed up before the game but did not play. Haarms (7-3) started and had seven points with six boards. Martin, a senior, scored 29 points for Butler. NOAH TRISTER (AP)

Hockey: Three Minnesota teams make NCAA Tournament, but not Gophers

NCAA TOURNAMENT Jairus Lyles couldn’t suppress a smile, knowing that a school known more for chess than hoops had finally made it happen — a 16 seed ousting a 1. The University of MarylandBaltimore County pulled off the most surprising upset in college basketball history, trouncing Virginia 74-54 on Friday night to become the first No. 16 seed ever to beat a No. 1 seed in the men’s NCAA Tournament. Lyles, above, is a DeMatha grad who previously played at VCU and Robert Morris. He scored a game-high 28 against Virginia. UMBC’s game Sunday against Kansas State ended after Express’ deadline. But the upset Friday secured an underdog legacy for UMBC alongside Buster Douglas, the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team and Joe Namath’s Jets. Virginia entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed after going 31-2 in the regular season, including 20-1 in ACC competition. The Cavaliers were favored by 20 points. A 77-72 stunner by NAIA team Chaminade over Ralph Sampson and No. 1-ranked Virginia in 1982 in Hawaii was considered the most remarkable upset in college hoops. But that was the regular season. No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament were 135-0. UMBC has been better known for a chess program that gives scholarships to international players and went to the game’s Final Four for 15 straight years (2002-16). STEVE REED (AP)

Deals for Breeland, Grant voided for failed physicals

All-Star pitcher Vargas out 4-6 weeks for Mets

As of Sunday, former Redskins players Bashaud Breeland and Ryan Grant were still free agents. Each reportedly failed a physical last week after agreeing to terms with new teams. Breeland, 26, started at corner for Washington last year. He had agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal with Carolina. NFL Network reported that an infected cut on Breeland’s foot could keep him from passing a physical for “a few months.” Grant, a wideout who had just 84 catches over four years with the Redskins, had agreed to a four-year, $29 million deal with Baltimore. He will reportedly visit Oakland. (EXPRESS)

Left-hander Jason Vargas, who was penciled in to be the Mets’ No. 3 starter this season, is expected to miss four to six weeks after fracturing a bone in his right hand. New York signed Vargas, 35, in free agency Feb. 18 with a two-year, $16 million contract. He went 18-11 with a 4.16 ERA for Kansas City last season, making his first All-Star team and tying for the MLB lead in wins. He was hit on the hand by a line drive during a minor league game Friday. The Mets announced Sunday that Vargas suffered a hamate fracture. He was to see a hand specialist to determine his treatment. (AP)

TV’s March blandness

‘Krypton’ 10 p.m. Wednesday on SyFy

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” co-writer David S. Goyer is behind this Superman prequel series that takes place long before the Man of Steel’s birth and follows his grandfather, Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe).

Out with the old TV and in with the old TV. It’s March, after all, and despite so much profound change in the making and distributing of televised content, this is still the month when networks quietly unload whatever’s left of the current season. Most of it is that underwhelming yet serviceable kind of TV nobody ever talks about, like these three new shows. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Oscar winner Danny Boyle directs this drama series about the 1973 kidnapping of John Paul Getty III (also the subject of the film “All the Money in the World”). Donald Sutherland, Hilary Swank and Brendan Fraser co-star.

‘Instinct’

‘For the People ‘

‘Station 19’

Sundays at 8 p.m. on CBS

Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC

Premieres 9 p.m. Thursday on ABC

Drawn from a James Patterson novel, the exceedingly bland “Instinct” (which premiered yesterday) could just as easily be titled “Don’t You Think Alan Cumming Should Have a Crime Drama on CBS?” Cumming stars as Dylan Reinhart, a professor who wrote a best-selling guide to psychopathic behavior — and has superior powers of observation. The show is set in motion when New York Police Department homicide detective Lizzie Needham (Bojana Novakovic) shows up to one of his classes seeking his expertise for a case. From there, “Instinct” is unabashedly rote, following CBS’ house style down to the letter, in which a pair of mismatched crime-solvers — one of them preternaturally gifted — lightly bicker and bumble their way to the arrest of a suspect.

In creator (and “Scandal” writer) Paul William Davies’ drama, which debuted last week, a group of eager young attorneys begin their first day at U.S. District Court in Manhattan, where half will work as prosecutors, half as public defenders. These newbies are the cream of the crop, including BFFs Sandra Bell (Britt Robertson of “Girlboss”) and Allison Adams (Jasmin Savoy Brown of “The Leftovers”), who work together as public defenders under their boss, Jill Carlan (Hope Davis), who constantly reminds her team that public defenders in federal cases seldom see a win. “For the People” starts from the idea that the prosecutors aren’t as coldhearted as they seem, nor are the public defenders as noble. But what’s really interesting about the show is, well, nothing much.

This “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff is about a station house of remarkably busy fire and rescue workers in Seattle. Jaina Lee Ortiz (“Rosewood”) stars as Andy Herrera, a committed firefighter who seems not at all committed to Jack Gibson (Grey Damon of “Friday Night Lights”), a colleague who wants to marry her. A problem is Andy’s secret affair with a police officer (Alberto Frezza) who was her high school boyfriend. Station 19’s captain (Miguel Sandoval), who is also Andy’s father and mentor, is injured in the line of duty. He decides to make Andy and Jack co-captains in his stead, to the skepticism of the entire firehouse. As on other Shondaland shows, workplace sex and relationships continue unabated by human resources departments or social awareness movements.

The amount “Black Panther” made at the box office this weekend, keeping it at No. 1 for the fifth straight week. Ryan Coogler’s comic book sensation is the first film since 2009’s “Avatar” to match that feat. Worldwide, the Marvel film has now grossed more than $1.1 billion. Alicia Vikander’s “Tomb Raider” opened in second place with $23.5 million. (AP) Lucas Hedges to play Shia LaBeouf in LaBeouf biopic “Honey Boy”; LaBeouf to play his father

“Nailed It” host Nicole Byer watches a baketestant work on … a cake?

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

Dough, no: ‘Nailed It’ lets bad bakers shine Let’s face it, folks: We’re not all Great British Bakers. And now there’s a place for home bakers to humiliate oursel … er … do the thing we love and win a $10,000 prize. That place is “Nailed It.” Each episode of the Netflix series pits three dessert makers against each other. They clearly love to bake. But like me and probably you, their love exceeds their skill set. Reportedly inspired by YouTube clips in which amateurs try to re-create astonishing baked goods, each episode challenges baketestants to tackle two desserts, like a jelly-filled doughnut iced with pirate symbols or a multitiered wedding cake topped with handcrafted fondant flowers. Comedian Nicole Byer is the brassy host, and legendary chocolatier Jacques Torres is head judge, who presides along with a guest judge drawn from the ranks of baking badasses. Mistakes will be made! One guy forgot to add eggs to his batter. A retired cop microwaved chocolate for such a long time that it began smoking.

Five-second bursts of heat are better, the judges sagely note. Home viewers will likely learn more from such errors than from the over-the-top techniques on other shows. “Nailed It” winks at us as we laugh at it, poking fun at the seamlessness of reality shows. A stagehand pops up from under a table when a prop is missing. When a judge isn’t sure what the prize is for a bake-off, she’s pointed in the direction of the teleprompter. Final baked goods often resemble lumpy clumps of dough topped with oozing, garishly tinted frosting. Yet even the judges admit that an ugly cake can taste better than it looks. The best (or least awful) cake wins; money is shot at the victor via a money gun! Meanwhile, episode 1 judge Sylvia Weinstock, aka “the queen of cakes,” deserves her own reality show. Wearing her trademark oversized blackrimmed glasses, the 88-yearold wanders into the “Nailed It” pantry, sees a “fabulous” pot she likes and decides to take it: “If you steal, you steal big.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

Eddie Redmayne has welcomed his second child, a boy, with wife Hannah Bagshawe. An announcement in the U.K.’s Sunday Times says Luke Richard Bagshawe was born March 10. Their daughter, Iris Mary, is 21 months old. Redmayne said on “Live With Kelly and Ryan” last month that they hadn’t learned the baby’s sex in advance. “There was basically only one name for each sex that we agreed on,” he added.
