A federal appeals court on Wednesday said a Michigan woman’s constitutional rights were violated when she was handed a ticket after giving the finger to an officer in 2017. A North Carolina thrift store got $1,000 for a bedroom suite that may be haunted. Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore reportedly warned customers that the previous owners said they had “continuous nightmares” while the furniture was in their bedroom and that their dogs “would not stop barking” at the 1950s highboy chest of drawers and canopy bed. The store says two customers were intrigued and paid full price. (AP)

page three ‘Angela’ looks out for patrons Nightlife There’s a small poster in the women’s restroom at the Ireland’s Four Courts pub in Courthouse that asks some serious questions: “Are you on a date that isn’t working out? Do you feel like you’re not in a safe situation?” Anyone whose gut answer is “yes” is encouraged to go straight to the bar and ask the staff if Angela is around. No, “Angela” isn’t a burly bouncer who’ll pin the aggressive patron up against the wall. It’s a signal to the staff that a situation is uncomfortable, and the person asking for her needs help extricating themselves, whether it’s having someone call a taxi or walk the customer to their car. Ask for Angela launched in pubs in Lincolnshire, England, in 2016, and has spread across the world, as far as Australia, Canada and now, Arlington. Arlington County Police Officer Dimitrios “Jim” Mastoras introduced Ask for Angela to Arlington’s restaurant and bar district as part of the new Arlington

aggressors: “You need to leave.” But the combination of staff training and awareness about the Ask for Angela program has been beneficial in the “few instances” where customers have sought help. “With the staff knowing we have the signs posted, it’s very easy for us to say, ‘Why don’t you come over here to the server station,’ ” away from the crowd, “and we can figure out how to get them out of a situation,” Walsh says. Lauren Taylor, the director of Safe Bars, a program that has trained staff in at least 25 Washington bars to stand up against sexual harassment, is not a fan of Ask for Angela. She believes in more direct methods of dealing with harassment. Taylor also takes issue with the fact that “the whole world knows about this secret code,” pointing out that signs are hung where men and women can see them. That said, Taylor has talked to many women who are fans of the program: Seeing the signs, Taylor says, is a reminder that “someone is paying attention. They appreciate that someone cares enough to put it up.”

Couples may receive up to $160 for attendance and completion of surveys to evaluate the program.

Smithsonian shrinks annual Folklife Festival THE DISTRICT The Smithsonian Institution has canceled this summer’s 10-day Folklife Festival celebrating the music and culture of Benin and Brazil and will replace it with a smaller event. January’s government shutdown is partly to blame. Sabrina Motley, director of the festival, said Thursday that initially, crucial funding for the 2019 event arrived later than expected, slowing preparations. “And once we had those funds,

we had the shutdown,” she said. “The timing was unfortunate.” The partial government shutdown lasted 35 days, from Dec. 22 through Jan. 25. The Smithsonian used reserve funds to remain open through the end of December, one of its busiest weeks. When it closed Jan. 2, its federal employees were furloughed and not permitted to work. Still, the Smithsonian employees were back at work five months before the festival was set to open. It was scheduled for

June 26-30 and July 3-7. A decision was made to postpone the Brazil and Benin celebration until summer 2020 and do a smaller event this year, Motley said. “Our partners were quite happy with that. They understood the pressure we were under.” The 2019 festival will be a two-day event, with the dates not yet announced, focused on the “Social Power of Music,” in keeping with the Smithsonianwide 2019 Year of Music theme. Virginia to create pilot program aimed at reducing eviction rates in the state

Sports betting bill looks to be stalled this year A key Maryland lawmaker said measures to allow sports betting in the state are “not going to happen this year.” State Sen. Metro to help riders pay for ride-hail trips Metro will foot part of the bill for an Uber, Lyft or taxi ride for late-night workers to ease the burden for those affected by the agency’s service cuts. The transit agency formally announced Wednesday its previously reported plan to subsidize ride-hailing trips in lieu of expanding service hours, after the agency’s board rejected a District proposal to restore the system’s midnight weekday and 3 a.m. weekend closings. Under the $1 million ridehailing subsidy program, Metro will pay for up to $3 of an Uber, Lyft or taxi trip for late-night hospitality, health care and other workers primarily in the service industry between midnight and 4 a.m., seven days a week. Riders would be eligible for 10 trips per week and would register for the program, which is initially set to last for one year. Metro has come under criticism, however, for opting to subsidize ride-hailing trips rather than bolstering bus service or adopting a more transit-oriented program to shuttle late-night workers. Uber and Lyft are widely acknowledged to be driving customers away from transit with discount fares. The transit agency said vendors should respond to its request for proposals by April 10. The program could launch as early as this summer. FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A tweet for help: When aversion isn’t an option Daniel Marcin admits he probably acted like a lot of the other passengers when he got on a Green Line train leaving Gallery Place on Monday morning and smelled the distinct odor of feces. The stench was coming from a man sitting in the middle of the car. Marcin couldn’t describe him afterward. He was trying not to look. But he did notice that most of the 15 or so other passengers stood away from the man, though it didn’t help them escape the odor. Marcin said he probably did make a face. And when the train pulled into Archives a moment later, he joined several others in escaping to the next car. Later, he wondered if the man saw his look of disgust or if he’d done something to

make the man feel ashamed. “If I did, I’m sorry about that,” he said. But while he said later that he could have handled the situation better, a Twitter exchange he had with Metro about the encounter stood out to me. Instead of tweeting the type of complaint that the smell of feces on Metro might elicit, Marcin tried to get the man some help. “Hi @wmata @Metrorailinfo, a guy pooped himself on car 7571 green to branch. Can you please get him some help? Pulling into L’Enfant now,” he tweeted to Metrorail’s account. Metro at first sounded as if it assumed Marcin wanted the man kicked off the train, and said it was letting Metro Transit Police know: “We have contacted MTPD and they would notify a medic if one is needed to assist. team is also dispatching a road mechanic to help clean up.” But that’s not what Marcin wanted. “When I say help, I mean a social worker, not the police,” he tweeted back. “The man needed a shower and a change of clothes, right? He didn’t need to get arrested,” he told me later. He tweeted, “Ok a police interaction was kinda the last thing I wanted the guy to have, but if it was all you could do, fine. I think the guy’s problems go beyond this morning.” Metro responded, “We understand your concern and appreciate you reaching out on his behalf. Unfortunately we do not have social workers on staff to assist with riders but MTPD can help to connect him with resources.” Marcin works as a federal

economist. So he’s not an expert on these things. He said he was fine with Metro’s answer if it meant the man was going to get some help. But later, he wondered if the man did get help. Metro spokesman Ian Jannetta said police did go find the man, but he couldn’t immediately say what the police did. Transit police “are trained to handle these situations with sensitivity and to recognize the appropriate course of action, whether an individual needs medics, shelter, mental health services or may be a danger to themselves,” he said. Some transit systems are taking innovative approaches toward the homeless. Philadelphia’s Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) worked with social services groups to open an 800-square-foot “Hub of Hope” near Penn Center, which serves free food and coffee to get the homeless to come in and get connected to needed services. Minnesota’s Metro transit police last year created a special unit whose members go around introducing themselves to the homeless to see what they need. They also began handing out rental vouchers last year to get people into housing. Los Angeles’ Metro system in 2017 contracted with a social services group to send outreach workers on the subway, providing what help they could, such as rides to the doctor and help getting photo IDs, according to the Los Angeles Times. “I don’t know that I’m any more passionate about [helping the homeless] than other people,” Marcin said about his tweets. “I don’t volunteer at a homeless shelter or anything,” he said. “But I would prefer that homeless people had safe and healthy homes, much like anyone else would.” Reach Kery Murakami at kery.murakami@washpost.com. Universities put to the test EDUCATION Universities raced to contain damage this week from scandalous allegations that athletic coaches took bribes as part of a wideranging scheme to let unqualified children from wealthy families gain entry to prestigious schools. Outrage mounted among parents and students who said the scheme showed those who play by the rules are losing seats at elite universities to unscrupulous families with money and clout. In response, Georgetown disclosed that it tightened vetting of athletic credentials after the university in late 2017 discovered “irregularities” in the recruiting practices of tennis coach Gordon Ernst. The coach, who left the university last year, was among dozens of people charged with crimes in the college admissions cheating and bribery conspiracy revealed Tuesday. Authorities said conspirators manufactured test scores and funneled payments to coaches who designated favored applicants as recruits, giving them priority in admissions. Affected schools said they were reviewing records of current students and graduates who may be connected to the scheme — even though law enforcement officials have not charged any students with crimes. College admissions have come under scrutiny in the past year, especially through a federal

Admissions scandal has colleges scrambling to manage the damage

The college admissions scandal revealed this week that parents were willing to pay thousands to help their children cheat on standardized tests.

lawsuit accusing Harvard of bias against Asian-Americans. That suit, which went to trial in the fall, marks the latest chapter in a decades-old debate over affirmative action. The Harvard case illuminated a wealth of data about not only the role of race in admission decisions but also the extra edge given to recruited athletes and children of alumni. On Wednesday, students of color said they felt vindicated. Often, students said, they are forced to deal with classmates’

Students file lawsuit Several students are suing Yale, Georgetown, Stanford and other schools involved in the bribery case, saying they and others were denied a fair shot at admission. suspicions that their skin color, not their academic achievements, got them into college. But the scandal offered a strong suggestion that the ones who had unjustly earned slots were wealthy, mostly white and academically unqualified. A tweet made the rounds in the community of first-generation and low-income students at Princeton University: “Wow, it turns out money was the real Affirmative Action all along!” The scandal also showed some parents were willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars to help their children cheat on the ACT or SAT. The College Board, which owns the SAT, said the charges sent “a clear message that those who facilitate cheating on the SAT — regardless of their income or status — will be held accountable.” The ACT also commended law enforcement. But affluent families routinely secure an edge in testing without breaking the law. They pay thousands of dollars not to cheat but to hire tutors for test preparation, one of many ways wealth tilts admissions. Another edge: the special consideration given children of alumni and donors. “Ultimately, I think the goal of a racially and socioeconomically diverse student body is essential to the mission of higher education,” said John B. King Jr., education secretary in the Obama administration. “So, one has to ask: What goal is served by legacy preferences or donor preferences?” NICK ANDERSON, PERRY STEIN AND MORIAH BALINGIT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Beto O’Rourke announces run for presidency POLITICS Beto O’Rourke, the former Democratic congressman from Texas who became a national celebrity with his unexpected campaign for a U.S. Senate seat, announced Thursday that he will seek the presidency in 2020. The announcement came after months of public reflection that included a solo road trip through rural America, a heartto-heart talk with Oprah Winfrey and rallying with supporters near the southern border. In a video made public early Thursday, O’Rourke promised to run “a positive campaign . . . to bring out the very best in every single one of us,” striking the same upbeat tone that he took in his contest against incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, last year. Beto narrowly lost the race, but it built him a national following. O’Rourke’s decision adds another unpredictable element to an already sprawling primary contest. The Texan has shown he can generate attention, attract donations and create considerable excitement, and his candidacy may appeal to centrists in a primary with a leftleaning field of candidates. In an interview with Vanity Fair that was published Wednesday, O’Rourke demonstrated no internal skepticism. “Man, I’m just born to be in it, and want to do everything I humanly can for this country at this moment,” he said of the presidential contest. BISHOFTU, ETHIOPIA | A grieving woman throws dirt in her own face after realizing that there is nothing physical left of a loved one who was among 157 people killed in Sunday’s Ethiopian Airlines crash. Flight recorders recovered from the plane arrived in France for analysis Thursday.

A suspect has been charged in Slovakia with ordering the slaying of investigative reporter Jan Kuciak and his fiancee, Martina Kusnirova, in February 2018. Two special prosecutors identified the suspect at a news conference as Marian K. Media reported the suspect was Marian Kocner, a businessman long suspected of involvement in the crime. (AP)

nation+world With no deal at hand, Parliament votes to push back deadline U.K. In a stalemate over Brexit, British politicians have chosen to try to delay it. After weeks of political gridlock, Parliament voted Thursday to seek to postpone the country’s departure from the European Union, a move that will likely avert a chaotic withdrawal on the scheduled exit date of March 29. The House of Commons voted 413-202 to ask the EU to put off the exit until at least June 30. The vote gives Prime Minister Theresa May some breathing space, but is still humbling for a

leader who has spent two years telling Britons they were leaving the bloc on March 29. Power to approve or reject the extension lies with the EU, which has signaled that it will only allow a delay if Britain either approves a divorce deal or makes a fundamental shift in its approach to Brexit. May is likely to ask EU leaders for an extension at a March 21-22 summit. The European Commission said the bloc would consider any request, “taking into account the reasons for and duration of a possible extension.” May was forced to consider a Brexit delay after lawmakers twice rejected her EU divorce deal and also ruled out,

in principle, leaving the bloc without an agreement. Thursday could have been worse for May. Lawmakers

rejected an attempt to strip her of control over the Brexit agenda. They defeated by a narrow margin, 314-312, an opposition attempt let Parliament choose an alternative to May’s rejected divorce deal. Lawmakers also voted 334-85 against holding a second Brexit referendum — at least for now. Any delay in the Brexit process would require the unanimous approval of all 27 remaining EU member states — and leaders in the bloc are exasperated at the events in London. They have said they will approve an extension if there is a specific reason, but don’t want to provide more time for political bickering in Britain. JILL LAWLESS

HAPPY PI DAY

Google employee Emma Haruka Iwao and a team of colleagues have broken the Guinness world record for calculating the most digits of pi — the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. They computed pi to 31.4 trillion decimal places, besting the previous record of 22.4 trillion digits. The calculation took about 121 days and was done using cloud technology — another first. (TWP)

RAPID CITY, S.D. | People free a vehicle from a snow drift Thursday in Rapid City, S.D., as blizzard conditions moved from Colorado to the Midwest. An exceptionally powerful “bomb cyclone” — bringing 100 mph wind gusts and conditions rivaling those of a hurricane, except with blinding snow in places — has contributed to at least two deaths and caused South Dakota’s governor to close all state offices.

Roger Stone trial set for Nov. 5 as judge weighs whether his book violated gag order

HARTFORD, CONN. Gun-maker Remington can be sued over how it marketed the rifle used to kill 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, a divided Connecticut Supreme Court ruled Thursday. Gun control advocates touted the ruling as a possible way to circumvent a federal law that shields gun manufacturers from liability in most cases when their products are used in crimes. Gun rights backers bashed the decision as judicial overreach. In a 4-3 decision, justices reinstated a wrongful death lawsuit against Remington and overturned the ruling of a lower court judge. The majority said that while most of the lawsuit’s claims were barred by the federal law, the maker could still be sued for wrongful marketing under Connecticut law. Joshua Koskoff, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, has said the Bushmaster and other AR-15style rifles were designed for military uses and should never have been sold to the public. He said Remington targeted younger, at-risk males through “militaristic marketing and astute product placement in violent first-person shooter games.” Allowing the lawsuit to move forward means that there will be an opportunity for discovery that could unearth company documents that could be embarrassing for Remington. GOP splits with Trump POLITICS The Senate passed a resolution Thursday to overturn President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, with 12 Republicans joining all Democrats to deliver a bipartisan rebuke to the president. The disapproval resolution passed the House last month, so the 59-41 Senate vote will send the measure to Trump’s desk. Trump has promised to use the first veto of his presidency to strike it down, and Congress does not have the votes to override the veto. “VETO!” Trump tweeted moments after the vote. Still, the Senate vote stood as a rare instance of Republicans breaking with Trump in significant numbers on an issue central to his presidency — the construction of a wall along the southern border. For weeks, Trump had sought to frame the debate in terms of immigration, arguing that Republican senators who supported border security should back him up on the emergency declaration. But for many GOP lawmakers, it was about a bigger issue: The Constitution itself, which grants Congress — not the president — control over government spending. By declaring a national emergency in order to bypass Congress to get money for his wall, Trump was violating the separation of powers and setting a potentially dangerous precedent, these senators argued. “It’s imperative for the president to honor Congress’ constitutional role,” Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, said Thursday as he announced his vote in favor of the disapproval resolution. “A national emergency declaration is a tool to be used cautiously and sparingly.” Republicans who voted with

Trump and against the disapproval resolution said the president was acting within his authority under the National Emergencies Act, and taking necessary steps to address a humanitarian and drug crisis at the border that Democrats ignored. “There is a crisis at the border and Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have prevented a solution,” said Sen. Cory Gardner, RColo., naming the House speaker and Senate minority leader. “It should never have come to this,

A 420-0 House vote The House voted unanimously Thursday for a resolution calling for any final report in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation to be made public, a symbolic action designed to pressure Attorney General William Barr into releasing as much information as possible when the probe is concluded. but in the absence of congressional action, the president did what Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer refused to do.” Many GOP senators agonized at length before deciding how to vote, with significant numbers of them — including Portman and Gardner, who is up for re-election next year — waiting until Thursday to announce their positions. In the end, only one Republican who is up for re-election next year — Susan Collins, R-Maine — voted for the disapproval resolution. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., another senator up for re-election in a politically divided state, had announced last month that he would vote for the disapproval resolution. He wrote an opinion piece in The Washington Post at the time arguing there would be “no intellectual honesty” in supporting executive overreach by Trump that he had opposed under former President Barack Obama. But on Thursday, Tillis flipped and cast his vote with the president, saying he was reassured by indications that Trump would support changes to the National Emergencies Act itself, to rein in presidential powers going forward. Tillis’ flip-flop highlighted the political pressure Republicans felt over potentially crossing the president. President Trump said he would support GOP efforts to update the National Emergencies Act at a later date, “but today’s issue is BORDER SECURITY and Crime!!! Don’t vote with Pelosi!” The vote on the disapproval resolution came a day after a Senate vote to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen, marking unusual twin rebukes from a Senate that has mostly bowed to Trump’s wishes.

Reputed boss of crime family is gunned down

ER I C A W ER N ER , S EU N G M I N K I M A N D

NEW YORK The reputed boss of New York’s Gambino crime family was shot to death in front of his home by a gunman who may have staged a car accident to lure him outside, dying a virtual unknown compared with his 1980s-era predecessor, John Gotti. Police said Thursday they were reviewing surveillance camera video of the attack on Francesco “Franky Boy” Cali, 53, who was gunned down Wednesday night at his house in Staten Island. The assailant sped off in a truck, police said. No immediate arrests were made and the motive was under investigation, Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said. Federal prosecutors had referred to Cali in court filings in recent years as the underboss of the Mafia’s Gambino family, once one of the most powerful and feared crime organizations in the country. News accounts since 2015 said he had ascended to the top spot. Federal prosecutions in the past 25 years decimated the ranks of New York’s five Mafia families, the Gambinos among them. The cases resulted in long prison terms for their bosses — Gotti included — and encouraged their successors to keep a lower profile. The last Mafia boss to be shot to death in New York City was Gambino don Paul Castellano; he was assassinated at Gotti’s behest outside a midtown Manhattan steakhouse in 1985. Gotti then took control of the family.

REDSKINS HERO

Collins awed by joining Taylor’s team

BIG TEN TOURNAMENT

Huskers stun Terps

NEBRASKA 69, MARYLAND 61 For the third straight season, Maryland’s trip to the Big Ten Tournament ended early, this time in a second-round loss to 13th-seeded Nebraska at United Center in Chicago. The fifth-seeded Terrapins (22-10) looked lifeless in the first half and offered a brief flurry to start the second, but the Cornhuskers kept finding a counter to extend the Terrapins’ recent run of tournament misery. Maryland hasn’t won a postseason game since 2016. Maryland trimmed Nebraska’s lead to eight with just under four minutes to go and then to six with two minutes left. But James Palmer Jr., who had a game-high 24 points, then hit a 3-pointer, and No. 21 Maryland never climbed any closer.

Nebraska (18-15) beat the Terrapins despite using a seven-man rotation because of injuries and backup guard Nana Akenten’s suspension. The Cornhuskers harassed the Terrapins into 36 percent shooting (18 for 50) and 11 turnovers. Sophomore big man Bruno Fernando, usually a dominant force in Maryland’s offense, scored a season-low three points on 1-for-4 shooting. Junior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. led the Terps with 18 points, but the team’s offense was dormant for much of the game. Maryland is 2-5 in the Big Ten Tournament since joining the conference for the 2014-15 season. Coach Mark Turgeon’s postseason record at Maryland dropped to 8-11. With about eight minutes

remaining, Turgeon received a technical foul after arguing a no-call when Terps guard Darryl Morsell missed a layup in transition. Glynn Watson Jr. hit both free throws and then Maryland fouled to make Isaiah Roby’s layup a three-point play. Suddenly, the Terrapins’ nine-point deficit

swelled to 14. Nebraska earned a second victory in the Big Ten tourney for the first time since 2016 and will face fourth-seeded Wisconsin on Friday afternoon. The Cornhuskers had advanced to the second round with a 68-61 victory against Rutgers on Wednesday night. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

As a child in the suburbs of New Orleans, Landon Collins idolized Redskins safety Sean Taylor. Collins wore No. 21 because it was Taylor’s number, dreamed of going to the University of Miami because it was Taylor’s college, and hoped that someday he too could play for the Redskins. When Collins, 25, accepted an $84 million, six-year deal this week to play safety for Washington, “I literally broke down,” he said Thursday at Redskins headquarters. “I still haven’t taken it all in.” The ex-New York Giant said he also cried this week when Redskins owner Daniel Snyder gave him a signed jersey worn by Taylor, who was 24 when he was murdered by robbers in 2007. Senior center Jack Salt, left, is known for defense and hadn’t scored in six straight games, in part because of back discomfort. But he had a career-high 18 points Thursday to help Virginia beat N.C. State (22-11) in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal in Charlotte. Virginia (29-2), the nation’s No. 2 team and the tournament’s top seed, won its ninth in a row and advanced to a semifinal against FSU on Friday at 7 p.m. (ESPN). (TWP)

Senior guard Terance Mann hit an offbalance runner with 1.8 seconds left in overtime to help No. 12 FSU beat No. 16 Virginia Tech on Thursday in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal in Charlotte. Mann’s shot from the right side rattled around the rim before dropping through for FSU (26-6). The Hokies (24-8) had a final chance, but guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, left, missed a long 3-pointer at the horn. (AP)

D.C. UNITED VS. REAL SALT LAKE | 8 P.M. SATURDAY, FLOSPORTS

Arriola wears new style well MLS Paul Arriola had a pressing question for Gregg Berhalter this winter while participating in the coach’s first training camp in charge of the U.S. men’s squad: When a player tackles a different system for country than club, how can his national team coaches properly judge him? “He — long story short — told me it’s the movements,” Arriola said. When Arriola reported for D.C. United preseason in February, fresh off playing in the U.S. victories over Panama and Costa Rica, he took certain principles preached by Berhalter and integrated them into his role as the right winger in D.C.’s more direct system. That meant playing with increased attacking aggression — floating inside to find the ball, making more runs behind the defense and engaging in plenty of one-on-one battles. “It’s OK if you lose the ball going forward in the opposing area,” said Arriola, 24. “That’s the mentality: Just go, and if

Rutgers’ Stringer not ready to coach this postseason

Suspended LSU coach denied request to return

Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer, citing doctors’ advice, won’t return for the postseason. The school said Thursday that she plans to resume her duties later this year. Stringer, 70, said last month she would sit out the rest of the regular season and possibly return for the postseason. Assistant coach Tim Eatman will continue as acting head coach. The Scarlet Knights (22-9) are expected to make the NCAA Tournament. (AP)

LSU said Thursday it will not allow coach Will Wade to resume his coaching duties unless he speaks to university officials about the reports of an FBI wire-tap that resulted in his suspension. LSU officials said he has not denied wrongdoing to them in a recruiting scandal, but he has asked to return to the sideline for the postseason. LSU plays Florida on Friday in the SEC Tournament. weekend’s 0-0 draw with New York City FC, with Arriola providing a constant threat from the right flank. “When we first got Paul, it was, ‘Paul’s selfless and he works hard and tactically he’s sound, technically he’s good — [he’s] just lacking that final product,’ ” United coach Ben Olsen said. “You saw last year that kind of changed. He’s off to a good start [this season] in that category.” Arriola will look to maintain that form when D.C. (1-0-1) hosts Real Salt Lake (1-0-1) at Audi Field on Saturday (8 p.m., FloSports). While Arriola’s versatility proved valuable to United last season — he started on both flanks, in central midfield and at right back — his natural position is on the right side of midfield. By adding right back Leonardo Jara and midfielder Lucas Rodriguez this offseason, United has built a roster that seemingly locks in Arriola as the right winger. “This year, more than last year, I have a really good understanding of my role and the type of player that I am,” said Arriola, who grew up in Southern California. “It gives me a lot of confidence moving forward.” THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

Patriots work to fill holes left by free agency NFL teams continued to adjust their rosters Thursday on the second day of free agency. (EXPRESS) Pats get new defensive end: New England sent a fifth-round pick in 2020 to Philadelphia for DE Michael Bennett, above, and a seventh-rounder in 2020. Bennett, 33, will try to fill the void left by Trey Flowers, 25, who signed with Detroit. Flowers led the Patriots in sacks each of the past three seasons; Bennett had nine sacks in 2018. More Patriots departures: NFL Network reported that the Saints agreed to a three-year contract with 25-year-old defensive tackle Malcom Brown, formerly of New England. In addition to Trey Flowers and Brown, the Patriots have lost left tackle Trent Brown to Oakland and wideout Cordarrelle Patterson to Chicago. Steelers add receiver: Pittsburgh, which traded WR Antonio Brown, signed Donte Moncrief for two years. He has 200 catches for 2,543 yards with 21 TDs in four seasons with the Colts and one with the Jaguars.

Giants get Tate: The Giants agreed to terms with Golden Tate, adding an accomplished wideout to try to fill the hole left by the trade of Odell Beckham Jr. The deal is for four years and $37.5 million, with $23 million guaranteed. Tate, 30, finished last season with the Eagles.

‘Yardie’

Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse share a laugh before inevitably making you sob in “Five Feet Apart.”

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

The magic touch: Lovable leads save ‘Five Feet Apart’ There are a lot of ways a movie can go wrong. Film is such a communal machine, and if just one or two cogs aren’t working, any reach toward greatness (or just goodness) grinds to a halt. In the case of “Five Feet Apart,” the newest entry in the “teenagers fall in love, [fatal disease] strikes, everyone learns a valuable lesson about living for the now” genre, the script causes the clog. Luckily, the two lead actors are skilled enough to keep the machine chugging along. In a movie that will inevitably be compared to 2014’s sobfest “The Fault in Our Stars,” Stella and Will are teenagers; both have cystic fibrosis and are staying on the same

hospital floor. Stella (Haley Lu Richardson) is waiting for a new set of lungs, putting her in the strange position of waiting for someone to die so she can live. Will (Cole Sprouse) has a particularly nasty and permanent bacteria that removes him from the transplant list; he’s undergoing a clinical trial as a last-ditch effort to survive. The title refers to the fact that no CF patient can get within 6 feet of another due to the danger of infection. (The “five feet” thing refers to the 12-inch risk the two eventually take because they luuuuuuv each other.) Of course, Stella and Will — she the responsible good girl, he the darkly comedic bad boy — fall in the kind of teenage love that can only take place within the space of about three weeks and mostly

Variety: Denzel Washington in talks for cop thriller “Little Things”

over FaceTime. It’s hard to blame the writers of such scripts (I mean, I still DO), because it must be tough. When one or both of your main characters are already living under the specter of dying young, how do you raise the stakes? They are literally facing down death with every breath they take; even action and war movies give you a break sometimes. The answer is to give the audience characters to care about, so that you root for them not necessarily to not-die, but to live. The real trick is you have to do it without depending on lines of dialogue like, “I’ve been so worried about dying I haven’t been living.” Which means the burden falls on Richardson and

‘Five Feet Apart’ (PG-13, 115 min.)

DIRECTOR: Justin Baldoni STARS: Haley Lu Richardson, Cole Sprouse, Moises Arias, Claire Forlani IN A NUTSHELL: Two teens with cystic fibrosis fall in love while living a life that requires them to keep their distance from each other.

Alicia Keys memoir due out Nov. 5

Sprouse, and they do surprisingly well — Richardson in particular. CF is a nasty disease, and Richardson sacrifices any vanity she has in order to look like, well, a teenage girl who has lived too many of her days under fluorescent lighting, doesn’t see the point in putting on makeup, and lets her hair do whatever. Sprouse is slightly more conventionally handsome and looks a lot less sick, but still brings a surprising amount of depth to a role where the emotional arc could have ranged from “smoldering” to “more intense smoldering.” The script doesn’t make you care about Stella and Will; Richardson and Sprouse do. Yes, there are some eye-rolling moments and cheap plot devices that they can’t quite overcome, but they largely bring the movie from mediocre to whatever a step above mediocre is. Oh, and if you haven’t registered as an organ donor, you should. There are people out there — some of them probably good-looking teenagers in love — who need you. CBS FILMS

Unrated, 101 min.

It’s easy to see the appeal of this film’s source material: a 1992 pulp best-seller about a drug courier who gets caught up in a spiral of retaliation. But there’s also not a whole lot to this story beyond the story. Idris Elba’s directorial debut is all kiss-kiss, bangbang and backstabbing, with a twist that, while effective, leads to a denouement of questionable — and not entirely satisfying — moral reckoning. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Styx’ Unrated, 94 min.

For the first half of this spellbinding little film, there’s barely any dialogue at all. But all that changes when a sailboat captain (Susanne Wolff) comes out on the other side of a storm to discover a disabled and slowly sinking ship filled with African refugees. The movie soon becomes a kind of moral allegory, crossed with an almost unbearably tense nautical thriller. M.O.

“Wonder Park” follows a girl who imagines a colorful cast of characters and a drab plot.

Going round and round … The muted, uninspired ‘Wonder Park’ suffers from a lack of direction FILM REVIEW It’s safe to assume that any animated movie made for children will probably not entirely cleave to reality. When a tale pretty much starts off with a talking mouse, you know things are going to get weird from time to time. The problem with “Wonder Park,” which is set in a magical theme park, is not the element of the fantastical. The problem — one of many — is that the story can’t seem to weave that element into a narrative that makes sense. To put it simply, “Wonder Park” can’t keep the wonder and the park on the same page.

That story begins in Wonderland, a place inhabited by a group of furry park mascots. Their leader is Peanut (voiced by Norbert Leo Butz), a monkey who creates the park’s rides. It turns out that Wonderland isn’t real, but the product of someone’s imagination: a little girl named June (voice of Brianna Denski), who dreamed it up with her mother (Jennifer Garner). After Mom is diagnosed with a mysterious illness and goes away for treatment, June puts the notion of Wonderland aside. But while on her way to math camp one summer, June escapes from the bus, intending to return home to be with her father. En route, she stumbles across — wait for it — Wonderland. The visitors have all left. Rides are crumbling. Peanut

is missing, and the rest of the mascots are under threat from something called “chimpanzombies”: stuffed-animal prizes from the park’s games of skill that have come terrifyingly to life. June and the mascots must team up to save the park, which was, apparently, real the whole time. Or was it? Much of the movie feels like filler. Shots are often overlong; scenes drag or are entirely unnecessary. Still, June is a

compelling enough character. It’s nice, for once, to see a girl on screen with a knack for engineering and a fondness for math. But June is also the only one in the movie with any sort of depth or character development. Worse yet, the visuals are dreary, and the colors muted. “Wonder Park” might have made a charming short film. As is, it’s a pointless and meandering meditation on, well, nothing. There’s no director credited either, the result of the original filmmaker, Dylan Brown, being fired for what Paramount said were inappropriate sexual comments and behavior. That’s bad. But it’s also a shame that a movie about one girl’s soaring imagination falls completely f lat. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

Clock strikes midnight for ‘One Day at a Time’

Netflix has canceled the comedy series “One Day at a Time” after three seasons, the streamer announced Thursday. “We spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work,” Netflix tweeted. “But in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season.” A Latino-centric reboot of Norman Lear’s classic series, the show starred Justina Machado, Isabella Gomez and Rita Moreno. Moore gives ‘Gloria Bell’ a ring of truth FILM REVIEW Gloria Bell, a middle-aged middle manager at a middle-size insurance company, lives in Los Angeles, although you would barely know it from the movie bearing her name. The L.A. of “Gloria Bell” isn’t the one of palm trees, beaches and invidious glamour shots, but the featureless sprawl that tends to be overlooked in glossy layouts and Hollywood fantasies. Against this aggressively neutral backdrop, Gloria (Julianne Moore) — divorced, with two grown children — tries to inject color and fun and sex into a life that, according to the world at large, isn’t worthy of such indulgences. When she meets a man named Arnold (John Turturro), Gloria explores the pitfalls and pratfalls of latein-life dating. Chilean director Sebastian Lelio adapted “Gloria Bell” from his 2013 movie “Gloria.” Here, he re-creates the film almost shot for shot, putting Moore in a pair of owlish eyeglasses and emphasizing her natural, unforced beauty. It’s a tribute to Moore’s charisma that such a visually bland film is still compelling to watch. Supported by terrific performances from Michael Cera, Brad Garrett and Holland Taylor, Moore is fearless as a woman fighting fears of loneliness, poverty and undesirability, and persevering in her pursuit of happiness. The week’s best movie previews

‘Avengers: Endgame’

‘Aladdin’

EXPECTED RELEASE: April 26

EXPECTED RELEASE: May 24

SUMMARY: Please don’t let Captain America die. After the Snapture, those Avengers who didn’t turn into something that would clog a vacuum are here to save the world again. (Please don’t let Captain America die.) Can they? Probably, if they work together. Just … please don’t let Captain America die. Take Pepper Potts instead. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Will Smith makes a less terrifying appearance as the Genie in the live-action movie no one knew we needed (largely because we didn’t need it). The trailer invites you to the lush world of a totally fictional Arabian country, which will probably combine a whole bunch of different cultures in a problematic way. K.P.K.

“The past 24 hours has taught me that just like President Trump’s tweets, there is a ‘Full House’ episode for EVERYTHING.”

Rick has been a consistent joy in my daily commute. Every day, as my girlfriend and I approach, he automatically folds up two papers and hands them to us with a smile. He’s never too busy or consumed with his work to acknowledge us, which makes me happy. So thank you, Rick, for helping us feel seen! I see you, too, and you’re a Star!

@JULIAMANCH, joking about the striking similarity between actress Lori Loughlin being charged in a university bribery scheme and the 1993 “Full House” episode “Be True to Your Preschool,” in which Loughlin and John Stamos’ characters lie to get their kids into a prestigious preschool. In a similar twist, actress Felicity Huffman, also charged, allegedly paid $15,000 to have a proctor bump up her daughter’s SAT scores — the same amount her character paid in a “Desperate Housewives” episode to get her sons into a private school.

All work and no play...

@DROIMEDIA, praising director

and cinematographer Morgan Cooper’s trailer for a remake of the hit ’90s comedy “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Cooper’s take, simply titled “Bel-Air,” reimagines what the comedy would be like if it took place in 2019. The main difference: Will is sent out to live with his uncle in California not for a fight, but after being arrested for gun possession.

“Have you considered renaming it El Chapo?” @WHXTVRSARA, suggesting that the moniker of the Mexican drug

cartel leader, known for escaping from jail cells, would be a better name for Chrissy Teigen’s hamster, Peanut Butter. Teigen took to Twitter this week to share that Peanut Butter had gone missing. Advised by other hamster parents, Teigen set up food lures and cameras to catch Peanut Butter, who was later found.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

This is an ‘SNL’ sketch, right? Lori Loughlin’s daughter, Olivia Jade Giannulli, was in the Bahamas on a yacht owned by a University of Southern California official when her mother was arrested as part of this week’s college bribery scandal, according to TMZ. Giannulli, 19, reportedly is friends with the daughter of Rick Caruso, the chairman of USC’s board of trustees. Ben Affleck opened up about his sprawling back tattoo during an appearance Thursday on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” saying he’s pleased with the widely derided ink. Photos of Affleck have revealed glimpses of the tattoo at various points since 2015, with the actor initially claiming it was temporary for a movie role. Last year, Affleck briefly acknowledged via Twitter that the tattoo was real. “It’s a phoenix,” Affleck explained Thursday, at which point DeGeneres interjected, “Rising from your ass.” Laughing, Affleck added: “It’s meaningful to me. … Sentiment ran against, [but] I love my tattoo — I’m happy with it.” (EXPRESS)
