Good look for Good Book RELIGION The main entrance will be flanked by large bronze panels lettered with passages from ancient manuscripts. On the roof will be a “Biblical garden,” filled with plant species that were around at the dawn of Christianity. A newly built wing will be clad in layers of handmade bricks from Denmark, meant to evoke layers of history. When it opens in late 2017, just about every aspect of the planned Museum of the Bible — the building materials, doorways and common areas — is intended to bring to mind the Holy Land or stories from the Good Book itself. The building, a brick warehouse dating from 1923, was the home of the Washington Design Center until Hobby Lobby president Steven Green, in search of a home for his museum, purchased it for $50 million in 2012. Officials and contractors detailed the building plans last week as they began demolition on a portion of the building that was added in 1982 and is to be

replaced with a new wing. Green and Cary Summers, president of the museum, hired six design firms for the $400 million project. The original warehouse is being gutted and mostly preserved, and then topped with a glass addition. Originally the curving glass was meant to evoke a scroll or Torah. Though the design had to be modified to meet historic preservation guidelines, from above it still somewhat resembles a rolled up scroll or closed book. “We’ve been working to preserve really as much of the historic fabric as we can,” said Brian Flegel of Clark Construction, who is overseeing the work. The building isn’t nearly as old as most of what will be inside. Green said he plans to house more than 44,000 biblical texts and artifacts here, including early Bibles of Martin Luther and a 1631 version of the King James Bible. Located a few blocks from the Capitol and National Mall on Fourth and D streets SW, the 430,000-square-foot building is also to include 20,000 square feet for an academic research center. Metro officials look at fans similar to the one near L’Enfant Plaza station during a tour of the system last week.

Metro was aware of outdated smoke system The plan to update old software never made it past paperwork stage TRANSPORTATION Months before a fatal crisis Jan. 12 in which noxious fumes enveloped a Metro train underground, the transit agency set out to improve its decade-old computerized process for handling smoke emergencies in tunnels, documents show. But the planned upgrades, meant to help Metro pinpoint the location of smoke and coordinate the work of ventilation fans, have not advanced beyond the paperwork stage. The documents — prepared for a possible contract for new computer software for Metro’s train-control center in Landover,

Md. — indicate that the agency knew its system for dealing with smoke in tunnels needed to be modernized. For a year, however, Metro moved at a less-than-urgent pace in trying to complete the improvements. Then disaster struck. Last week, in its first substantial disclosures about the Jan. 12 incident, the National Transportation Safety Board said the tunnel calamity was exacerbated by Metro’s inability to quickly identify the origin point of the smoke. Metro then activated two sets of tunnel ventilation fans at cross-purposes, pulling the smoke toward the train instead of pushing it away, the NTSB said. Metro has been aware for months that its Landover train controllers are not adequately

served by computer software that dates to 2002, even with modifications made in the past decade, the documents show. Called a “request for information,” the paperwork was prepared in January 2014 and made available to companies so Metro could start talking with potential vendors about software products. If Metro proceeds with the project, its next steps will be drafting specifications for what it wants to buy and issuing a request for contract bids. To date, the replacement effort has not gone beyond the informationgathering stage. Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said all aspects of the traincontrol center are under review. Cars parked along M Street in the District were covered in snow Tuesday.

‘Snow emergency’ was delayed in D.C. City officials waited until Tuesday morning to restrict parking TRANSPORTATION D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s administration chose to tackle Tuesday’s snowstorm without early deployment of one of the city’s biggest weapons in its arsenal: declaring a snow emergency. The District delayed declaring a snow emergency, which precludes cars from parking on hundreds of miles of city thoroughfares, until the start of Tuesday’s morning rush hour — the same time the roads would have been needed to get workers downtown. T hat decision c a me de spite consensus more than a

day earlier that the nation’s capital would receive between 4 and 8 inches of snow. Asked about the delay at a news conference Tuesday, William Howland Jr., Bowser’s director of public works, said the decision was intentional because he wanted to protect hundreds of unsuspecting residents and visitors from having their cars towed over the Presidents Day holiday. “We were coming off a holiday weekend,” Howland said. “What I was trying to do was tow as few cars as possible.” That meant that city snow crews could not begin curb-tocurb plowing of major streets until after 7 a.m., and well after the last of the snow had fallen.

If there’s no sledding, why call it the ‘Hill’? Washingtonians who used Capitol Hill as a sledding run on Tuesday were shooed away as soon as Capitol Police saw them, The Wall Street Journal reports. Sledding on the U.S. Capitol Ground was practically an annual tradition until a ban was put in place after the Sept. 11 attacks, the Journal reports. Tuesday’s would-be sledders said Capitol Police encouraged them to contact their members of Congress, who could issue a waiver that would allow them to use the hill. Congressional offices were closed. (EXPRESS)

Last month’s attack at the newspaper Charlie Hebdo had many on edge.

France tracking 400 terror links PARIS France is tracking hundreds of people believed to belong to possible sleeper cells for terror organizations like al-Qaeda or the Islamic State, the country’s top security official said. In an interview, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve laid out what has become an increasingly urgent question for European intelligence services: How to trace the moment when someone transforms from a disgruntled criminal or a disaffected citizen into a terrorist, and how to block those first steps toward radicalization. “Four hundred targets have been identified by our intelligence services that are more or less sleeper cells, affiliated or

in relation with al-Qaeda-type organizations, that can strike like the Kouachi brothers,” Cazeneuve said late Monday. Said and Cherif Kouachi were French-born brothers who killed 12 people in Paris on Jan. 7 when they stormed the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. They were shot dead by police in a confrontation two days later. Cazeneuve said he wants new measures to give intelligence services more leeway to monitor suspects’ electronic communications. nation+world JERUSALEM After nine years with him as their prime minister, Israelis know a lot about Benjamin Netanyahu and his first lady, Sara. Now they also know how much the couple spend on hair and makeup, maid service and swimming pool water. On Tuesday, the Israeli state comptroller released an eagerly awaited report condemning the Netanyahus for “excessive spending” at both the prime minister’s official residence in Jerusalem and the couple’s private beachfront villa in Caesarea. Want to know how much the

Netanyahus billed the Israeli taxpayer for take-out food in 2011? It was about $24,000, “even though there was a chef in the residence,” the comptroller noted. The comptroller’s office warned of more investigations in the offing — into the issue of improper bottle recycling by the Netanyahus, for one. Apparently, the couple pocketed $1,000 in cash refunds paid by stores when staff returned drink bottles for deposit. The bottles were purchased by the state, the report noted, and so the refunds should have been returned to the treasury.

At the same time he lashed out at the “ongoing media campaign” that he said is aimed at toppling him.

Immigration plan stalls Obama vows to appeal federal judge’s order that blocked program WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX

Christie is like Anne Hathaway — seriously!

GREGORY BULL (AP)

WASHINGTON The Obama administration put its new deportation-relief program on hold Tuesday on the eve of its launch, complying reluctantly with a federal judge’s order that roiled immigrant communities nationwide and seemed to harden an alreadytense stalemate on Capitol Hill. President Barack Obama promised an appeal and predicted he’d prevail. But for tens of thousands of immigrants in line to begin applying today for work permits and deportation stays under his directives, their plans were canceled, at least temporarily. Talking to reporters in the Oval Office, Obama said he disagreed with the ruling by U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen of Texas that the administration had exceeded its authority. But he said that, for now, he must abide by it. “We’re not going to disregard this federal court ruling,” Obama said, but he added that administration officials would continue to prepare to roll out the program. “I think the law is on our side and history is on our side,” he said. On Capitol Hill, the Homeland Security Department stood 10 days away from losing funding, but Hanen’s ruling made a compromise on that dispute look more distant than ever. Republicans are blocking funding for the agency unless Democrats agree

Dozens of rallies, including this one in San Diego, were held Tuesday in support of the president’s immigration plan.

The decision U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen on Monday granted a request by a coalition of 26 states led by Texas to block President Barack Obama’s action on immigration while a lawsuit to permanently stop the order goes through the courts. Obama’s executive action could spare from deportation as many as 5 million people who are in the U.S. illegally. THE JUDGE: Nominated to the court by President George W. Bush, Hanen once accused the Obama administration of participating in conspiracies to smuggle kids into the U.S. by helping reunite them with parents who live here illegally. (AP)

to cancel Obama’s immigration orders, and they seized on the ruling as validation for their position. “Congress must reassert its waning power,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, a leading immigration hardliner. “We must re-establish the constitutional principle that the people’s representatives control the purse.” Yet Senate Democrats, who have been blocking a Housepassed bill that would fund the department but also undo Obama’s actions, said the ruling from Hanen did nothing to budge them. “Democrats remain united in our belief that funding for the Department of Homeland Security

should not be used as a ransom by Republicans, period,” said Chuck Schumer of New York. If the political impasse seemed severe, so were the implications for millions of immigrants in the country illegally who have cheered Obama’s executive directives in the face of congressional inaction. “We feel powerless but not defeated, sure that it will all work out,” said Claudia Ramon, a native of Colombia, at a rally in Houston, one of dozens nationwide where immigrants and their advocates vowed to continue with preparations under Obama’s programs. Rutgers University has some bad news for Chris Christie: Just 37 percent of New Jerseyans have a favorable impression of their governor — down from nearly 70 percent in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. We’ve been trying to think of a good metaphor for what’s happening to Christie, and then it hit us: Anne Hathaway. This is what The Post’s Emily Yahr wrote about the actress last year: “Oh, the case of poor Anne Hathaway. The Oscar-winning actress has received an avalanche of bad press over the past couple of years for that most polarizing kind of offense: being herself.” What made Hathaway so fun in the beginning eventually wore on people as she became more famous. She seemed to become a caricature of herself, even if she was still just being herself. Such is the case with Christie. He became popular in New Jersey after Sandy, and through it all, his combative style made him impossible to ignore. Now, though, Christie has had a few years to wear on people. The most recent memory of him isn’t Sandy but a bridge scandal. But what could Christie actually do? Change? The question is whether a less-Chris Christie Chris Christie is a compelling or sustainable enough image. Can the guy shed the very essence of what made him a well-known politician and still remain a contender? AARON BLAKE

The most common treatment is a combination of medication and a night guard. The point of the night guard is to be a barrier between the teeth to protect them from wear. The night guard is one way to reduce contact; another is to try to change behavior. “You can’t walk around with a night guard 24/7,” Carpio noted, “so we try to teach patients some behavioral interventions to recognize when they do it, and to try to stop it.” Some dentists suggest such things as yoga and cutting out caffeine. But Scott said lowering stress is no easy task. “I’ve tried everything,” she said, including “trying to stretch my mouth, drink relaxing teas. … Some people even say you need to do a scream before you go to bed at night to let your tension out. I would love to find a solution.”

TRENDS The Chinese New Year is a time of celebration, but for many young Chinese, heading home for the weeklong national holiday means facing this inevitable question from their parents: Why aren’t you married yet? This perennial source of angst has become so feared in recent years that many opt to work overtime during the festival, which begins Wednesday, to avoid their families altogether. Some enterprising singles offer their services as rent-aboyfriends on China’s equivalent of eBay. But one desperate man this year topped them all. According to the Dalian Evening News, a 32-year-old bachelor in the province of Liaoning kidnapped a woman off the street and tried for 2½ hours to talk her into becoming his wife. All so he wouldn’t have to face his parents’ excruciating Chinese New Year nagging. Pressure to get married has a long tradition in China, but worsening the situation these days is an increasing generational and urban-rural gap in views. In big cities, more young professionals are opting to remain single well into their 30s, while those in small cities and rural areas continue to marry young. Now that the man is in jail, one commenter on China’s Weibo site joked, at least now “you don’t have to worry about parents nagging you to get married!” WILLIAM WAN

Perils of the daily grind All that stress could be causing serious damage to your teeth at night, experts say HEALTH Teeth grinding can often be found among highly determined people, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and that’s a population well represented in the Washington area. It’s no wonder, then, that dentists here find plenty of what they call bruxism, a disorder in which you unconsciously grind or clench your teeth and one that can result in big-time dental problems. Grinding typically occurs at night, clenching at any time. District dentist Harvey Levin said that almost 30 percent of his patients have serious enough bruxism to need night guards, devices that can help reduce the risk of tooth damage, jaw pain and other issues caused by grinding and clenching. “I make more night guards for attorneys than any other group of people,” Levin said. “They have a stressful life.” Lillian Carpio, a periodontist in McLean, Va., said that almost half of her patients show signs of

bruxism. To her, it seems more prevalent than before: “Everywhere is fast-paced, and there’s a lot of pressure to succeed.” Despite the sense that many a Washingtonian engages in teeth grinding, sleep-related bruxism is estimated to affect only about 10 percent of adults in the general population, according to the American Sleep Association, and 15 percent of children. The rates decrease as children grow older. Many adult cases appear to be caused and exacerbated by stress, but the reasons for bruxism among children are less understood. The symptoms can include wear on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, indentations in the teeth, especially at the gum line, cracked teeth, broken fillings or even indentations on the tongue or bite marks on the cheek. It sometimes results in headaches or pain in front of the ear, where the jaw’s temporomandibular joint is located. Noshir Mehta, a professor

“What are you going to do, tell somebody to get rid of their wife? Or quit their job? People don’t change their life habits very easily.” HARVEY LEVIN, a District dentist, describing how challenging it can be to reduce overall stress levels

at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and the former director of its Craniofacial Pain Center, said, “When you clench your teeth, usually during sleep, there’s about 300 pounds of force on the tooth. That’s like a linebacker standing on it.” Severe dental damage can result. Courtney Scott, 45, who lives in Alexandria, said that over the

NBA teams ready to run

Kentucky … then who?

The Warriors (42-9) and Hawks (43-11) have the top two records in the league, but are they really the title favorites? Here are a few teams to watch for coming out of the NBA All-Star break.

THERE’S NO ARGUMENT ABOUT WHO IS NO. 1 IN COLLEGE HOOPS. The second-best team in the nation behind Kentucky, however, is up

for debate. This week, Virginia is No. 2 in the AP top 25 poll. But Gonzaga keeps winning out West. Duke is led by a freshman who is probably the nation’s best big man. Wisconsin has experienced talent. And Villanova can be a tough matchup with its ability to shoot the 3-pointer. Here’s a closer look at the candidates in the race for No. 2 behind the undefeated Wildcats. AARON BEARD (AP)

JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

3 Grizzlies (39-14) Currently second in the West, the Grizzlies have the best defense in the league (allowing 95.7 points a game) and are 13-3 since trading for Jeff Green.

The Cavaliers are miserable to play against. They control tempo and make opponents work for everything. The reigning ACC champions also have experience and complete trust in coach Tony Bennett’s formula. But losing Justin Anderson to a finger injury for several weeks makes things tougher. He’s a physical guard averaging about 13 points and shooting an ACC-best 48 percent from 3-point range, and the Cavs won their first two games without him by a combined five points before Monday’s 61-49 win against Pittsburgh.

Gonzaga’s offense is humming. The Bulldogs are shooting a national-best 52.7 percent from the field. Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer gives them an inside-outside scorer alongside a strong backcourt. And their only loss came at now-No. 7 Arizona in overtime. But Gonzaga remains an annual mystery in one respect: trying to measure its West Coast Conference dominance against powerconference teams. The Bulldogs have played just two ranked opponents this year and haven’t survived the tournament’s opening weekend since 2009.

Freshman big man Jahlil Okafor has been as good as advertised, averaging 18.2 points and 9.3 rebounds while shooting 67 percent. He’s also a solid passer against steady double teams. Wins at both Virginia and Wisconsin say plenty about this team’s upside. But the Blue Devils struggled defensively in losses to N.C. State and Miami, particularly against dribble penetration. Kicking Rasheed Sulaimon off the team this month leaves the Blue Devils vulnerable to foul trouble with only eight scholarship players.

Preseason All-American 7-footer Frank Kaminsky can score (17.3), rebound (8.3) and shoot from outside, while Sam Dekker and Nigel Hayes are strong frontcourt sidekicks on a veteran team coming off a Final Four run. Wisconsin is also one of the nation’s most efficient offensive teams, shooting 48.4 percent from the field. The Badgers miss senior floor leader Traevon Jackson, who is out as he recovers from a January foot injury, though sophomore Bronson Koenig has filled in well. And the defense isn’t exactly of the lockdown variety.

When Villanova is playing well — like when it raced to a 37-23 halftime lead earlier this month in a win over Georgetown — the Wildcats are a scary matchup with their ability to spread the floor. They have tremendous balance with six guys averaging at least 9.2 points led by Darrun Hilliard, who hit a game-winner at Butler on Saturday. But they rely heavily on the 3 (eight made per game), so what happens if the shot isn’t falling? And Villanova has had a recent history of late-season fades, last reaching the Sweet 16 in 2009.

Seton Hall suspends Sterling Gibbs two games for punch during Villanova game

Thunder (28-25) With Kevin Durant back, the Thunder beat the Grizzlies and Clippers by a combined 39 points the week before the break. This could be the scariest No. 8 seed ever.

1 Cavaliers (33-22) After a midseason roster shakeup, LeBron James seems comfortable with his new teammates. Cleveland has gone 14-2 since Jan. 15 and is just four games back of second place in the East.

STREETER LECKA (GETTY IMAGES)

Nats being early favorite may be a jinx

In a letter to fans, Alex Rodriguez said he takes “full responsibility for the mistakes” that led to his 2014 ban.

Yankees’ A-Rod makes vague apology to fans Rodriguez’s statement doesn’t detail his PED use that led to 2014 ban BASEBALL Alex Rodriguez issued a fiveparagraph handwritten apology “for the mistakes that led to my suspension” on Tuesday without detailing specifics about his use of performance-enhancing drugs. Ready to report back to the Yankees following a seasonlong suspension for violating baseball’s drug agreement and labor contract, Rodriguez apologized to team officials in person during a meeting at the ballpark on Feb. 10. They suggested he hold a news conference before the start

of spring training this Friday and offered the use of Yankee Stadium, but Rodriguez declined. Rodriguez addressed his statement “to the fans” and wrote, “I take full responsibility for the mistakes that led to my suspension for the 2014 season,” though he didn’t explain what those mistakes were. He wrote: “I accept the fact that many of you will not believe my apology or anything that I say at this point. I understand why, and that’s on me.” “It was gracious of the Yankees to offer me the use of Yankee Stadium for this apology but I decided the next time I am in Yankee Stadium, I should be in pinstripes doing my job,” he wrote.

$10K

New York says Rodriguez, who turns 40 in July, has been replaced by Chase Headley at third base and will have to compete for playing time at designated hitter and as an infield backup. Rodriguez is owed $61 million over the final three seasons of his contract, and the Yankees say they do not plan to pay five $6 million bonuses detailed in a marketing agreement for historic achievements he may reach. Before apologizing to the Yankees last week, Rodriguez met last month with Rob Manfred, who succeeded Bud Selig as baseball commissioner on Jan. 26. Rodriguez wrote, “I’m ready to put this chapter behind me and play some ball.” RONALD BLUM (AP)

The Nationals (93.0) and Dodgers (92.5) have the highest projected season win totals according to numbers posted by the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. That makes the Nationals the favorite to win the 2015 World Series at 6-to-1. And that’s not a good thing. No team has won the championship after being installed as the preseason favorite since the 2009 Yankees. The World Series winners since 2010 were all at least 20-to-1 long shots in the offseason but no worse than 30-to-1. Manager Matt Williams, below, and the Nats may be loved by Vegas, but using the 20 to 30-to-1 guideline, the Indians and Pirates, followed by the Tigers and Blue Jays, are better bets to win the 2015 World Series. Spring brings exciting returns to the diamond While much of the Northeast and Midwest navigates piles of snow, spring training begins this week when pitchers and catchers file into camps in Florida and Arizona. Here are a few things to watch heading into spring training. JAY COHEN (AP) Here comes the champs The last team to win consecutive World Series was the Yankees from 1998 to 2000. One spot to watch for the defending champion Giants this spring is third base, where Casey McGehee replaces Pablo Sandoval after the slugger signed with Boston.

Many happy returns The comeback capital is New York, where Matt Harvey hopes to return to form for the Mets, and three intriguing situations are brewing for the Yankees. CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka look to rejoin the rotation after injury-plagued seasons. And Alex Rodriguez is back after his drug suspension. His last game was Sept. 25, 2013.

Amount the Big Ten fined Penn State for comments made by coach Pat Chambers after Saturday’s loss to Maryland, the league announced Tuesday. “If I didn’t complain, [Penn State senior guard D.J.] Newbill would have never got to the foul line. Because [Maryland’s Melo] Trimble gets there 12 times, and he’s a freshman, and he’s on the road. It’s a joke. It’s a joke the way we are officiated. It’s disappointing,” Chambers said. The rotations in Chicago had a makeover, with the Cubs signing Jon Lester and the White Sox trading for Jeff Samardzija. The Red Sox, with Sandoval and slugger Hanley Ramirez, and the Padres, with right-hander James Shields and a brand new outfield, also had active offseasons.

WORTH THE TRIP

Know what it means to miss N’awlins The Big Easy is just a bite away at these Southern restaurants If all the talk of Mardis Gras has you pining for authentic New Orleans cuisine, you’re in luck. The following restaurants (two of which are led by chefs with roots in the Big Easy) dish out staples as good as those you’ll find down South. Although, says Jeff Tunks of Acadiana, “your mother’s gumbo is always the best.”

Puddin’s po’boy

RACHEL WEITZMAN (FOR EXPRESS)

Macon Bistro & Larder names Daniel Singhofen executive chef

Puddin’s Po’boys ($7)

Bayou Bakery’s beignets ($3)

Follow @DCPuddin for food truck location; 202-7251030, dcpuddin.com.

1515 N. Courthouse Road, Arlington; 703-243-2410

Puddin’, an Eastern Market pop-up and food truck, serves its po’boy on a fresh sub roll from Panorama or Lyon bakeries, piled with cornmeal-fried wild blue catfish and dressed with remoulade sauce (spicy Cajun mayonnaise) and vinegar ’slaw. Most po’boys come with lettuce and tomato, but Toyin Alli, Puddin’s owner-chef, says, “I wanted a twist on a traditional po’boy that’s served how I would like to eat it.” It’s a surprise to even her most loyal customers that Alli hails from West Africa, not Louisiana. “When I make this food, it tastes like a lot of what we eat back in Nigeria,” she says.

Beignets, deep-fried pastries, are a New Orleans breakfast staple. Chef David Guas of Bayou Bakery says his taste almost exactly like those in the Crescent City. Served three per order, they arrive airy yet moist, piping hot and buried in powdered sugar. (Save those black slacks for another day.) The chicory root coffee, brewed in-house, is another nod to New Orleans. “What’s exciting is seeing someone from New Orleans bring their kid here to try one for the first time,” says Guas, who grew up in New Orleans and remembers being on his “best cathedral behavior” for a trip to Morning Call or Cafe Du Monde.

Iron Gate near Dupont Circle debuts quick lunch menu

Acadiana’s seafood gumbo ($25) 901 New York Ave. NW; 202-408-8848

Acadiana’s rustic gumbo is “a labor of love,” says chef Tunks. A deep-brown base of flour, oil, spices and seasonings (known as a roux) brews for five to six hours, then celery, peppers and onions are added. This method is the “backbone of Cajun cooking,” Tunks says. Crab, gulf shrimp, poached oysters, redfish and pickled okra are added to order, so as not to overcook, and topped with a scoop of Louisiana rice. “One of the biggest compliments,” Tunks says, “is that a lot of people from Louisiana say Acadiana does this dish just as well or better than what they’ve had back home.”

An elevated concept Highline RxR, a new bar in Crystal City, is doing its part to cater to the neighborhood’s ever-growing tech community. “We measured the table tops so that two laptops could work across from each other,” says partner Peter Bayne. Housed in the second-level space formerly occupied by Bailey’s, Highline RxR (2010 Crystal Drive, Arlington; 703-413-2337, highlinerxr.com) has a breezy floor plan with floor-to-ceiling windows, repurposed metal and lots of graffiti, which Bayne says ties into the bar’s loose transportation theme. “We went for a bit of a train station feel, with lots of windows and benches,” says Bayne, who adds that you can watch planes take off at Reagan National Airport from the dining room. The menu is made of betterthan-your-average bar food, including a melty chicken cheesesteak with fries cut in-house. HOLLEY SIMMONS (EXPRESS)

REBECCA CABAGE (AP)

Darren Criss headed to Broadway in ‘Hedwig’

Imagine Dragons’ new album is a little boring — just what they wanted.

Imagine Dragons crafts hollow rock The band’s new album checks all the right boxes, to little effect ALBUM REVIEW “Smoke + Mirrors,” Imagine Dragons’ first full-length release since the monster hit “Radioactive” wore out its welcome on pop stations last year, has neither soul nor taste. It will advance the notion that Imagine Dragons is an inexplicably popular band that no one will admit to liking. It’s also pretty good. “Smoke + Mirrors,” out now, relies less on hip-hop beats than its predecessor, the group’s 2012 major-label debut album “Night Visions,” but otherwise it follows much the same formula: carefully sculpted arena rock with freight-train choruses, overlaid with decorative touches pinched from a variety of different genres. Opening track “Shots” is reminiscent of late 2000s synth-pop from Brooklyn. “I Bet My Life” is

29%

Mumford & Sons-esque stadium rock. “I’m So Sorry” buries a solid blues song under a mountain of needless distortion. The title track is like Coldplay, right down to singer Dan Reynolds’ keening falsetto. Yet Imagine Dragons is very good at what it does, even if what it does isn’t very good. “Smoke + Mirrors” effortlessly achieves its one purpose: cram as many popular styles as possible into a mainstream rock album to appeal to as many people as it can. “Smoke + Mirrors” hits all of its (overly broad) targets. It positions Imagine Dragons as the heir to corporate rock behemoths like Journey, a similarly anonymous crafter of pleasing, empty songs. In the band’s early days, much blood was shed in an attempt to figure out who was underneath the blandness and bluster — but Imagine Dragons has never pretended that there was an underneath. There’s no reason not to take the band at its word.

Producers of the hit musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” said Tuesday that “Glee” star Darren Criss will step into the title role’s high heels April 29, taking over from co-creator John Cameron Mitchell. Criss made his Broadway debut in 2012 as J. Pierrepont Finch in “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” “Hedwig” is about an East German transsexual seeking love and stardom backed by a retro glam-rock band. (AP)

“We can only hope Pinterest’s takedown serves as a warning to other politicians who hope to meme their way through the 2016 campaign: You guys don’t get the Internet and you’re not funny. Please – please — abstain.” CAITLIN DEWEY AT WASHINGTONPOST .COM isn’t amused at all that Rand Paul

created a fake, “sexist and unfunny” Pinterest board for Hillary Rodham Clinton, which Paul tweeted about Saturday. Pinterest quickly deleted the page because it violated its terms of service, which forbids impersonation.

“Spoiler alert: Michelle Obama tells Billy Eichner he may get shot.” NEHA PRAKASH AT MASHABLE.COM doesn’t come close to ruining the latest installment in Funny or Die’s “Billy on the Street” series, which features comedian and host Billy Eichner quizzing Big Bird and first lady Michelle Obama at a D.C. Safeway. The spot is part of Obama’s “Eat Brighter” campaign with the produce industry to encourage children to eat more fruits and vegetables. Eichner prodded the first lady about what TV shows she and President Barack Obama watch (“a lot of ‘SportsCenter’”) and what she thought of pop singer Ariana Grande’s ponytail. Michelle also slow danced with Big Bird to Aerosmith and pushed Eichner down an aisle in a shopping cart while he recited Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1999 Oscar acceptance speech.

“If you score one of the Chia Werths, you should definitely, definitely make a time lapse video of his beard growing and then dying.”

.COM employs the tone of Apple’s new

33 | 17 TODAY: With these cold conditions, don’t anticipate much snow melt just yet. And whatever snow is left after this onslaught will likely last into the start of the weekend as another gigantic chunk of polar air is poised to flood the area by the evening hours. Expect scattered afternoon and evening snow showers with winds at 20-25 mph.

Underclassing that family never works

‘Bet the gecko never does this,’ Esurance grumbles Lindsay Lohan has persuaded Esurance, who featured her in a Super Bowl commercial, to donate $10,000 to CSV, the organization with which she has been completing her court-ordered community service. TMZ reported that a judge has questioned Lohan’s hours, in which she included fan meet-andgreets. The judge may ask CSV to speak to Lohan’s service. “The money could taint the legitimacy of CSV’s response,” TMZ suggested.

Amber Rose picked a fight with the Kardashians on Monday, telling New York radio station Power 105.1 that Kylie Jenner, 17, rumored to be dating rapper Tyga, 25, is “a baby, she needs to go to bed at 7 o’clock and relax.” Khloe Kardashian responded on Twitter, bringing up Rose’s past as a stripper. Rose responded, “I’ll be that lil whore to support my family like ur older sister is a whore 2 support hers,” a reference to Kim Kardashian’s sex tape. Neither Kim nor Kylie has responded. (EXPRESS)
