Excuse Only Works in Mordor A 10-year-old Norwegian boy tried to pass himself off as a dwarf when he was caught driving a car on Wednesday, The Local reports. The boy took the family car for a joyride with his toddler sister, but ended up getting it stuck in a snowy ditch. A snowplow driver attempting to free the vehicle said the boy told him he was a dwarf and had forgotten his driver’s license. Police eventually escorted the children home unharmed. Thankfully, Student Decided Not to Eat the Yellow Snow A Massachusetts middle schooler’s tongue got stuck to a metal pole Wednesday. Easthampton Fire Chief David Mottor says firefighters responded to White Brook Middle School at about 8 a.m., when temperatures were well below freezing. Firefighters poured warm water on the student’s tongue, freeing it. The student, whose age and gender were not released, was not injured. (AP) CRITICS

NSA Worker Tied to Leaks Resigns Memo: Employee admitted to giving Snowden password Washington A National Security Agency employee has resigned from his job after admitting to FBI investigators that he allowed Edward Snowden, then an NSA contractor, to use his personal computer credentials to gain access to classified information, according to an agency memo. The unidentified employee was not aware that Snowden intended to use the password to obtain classified material for the purposes of disclosure, said the memo, which was first reported by NBC News. The employee is one of three individuals who have been under investigation for their unwitting involvement in Snowden’s effort to remove the material in what may well be the largest breach of classified information in history. None was accused of collusion, a senior U.S. official familiar with the investigation said. “It’s a violation of procedures … but no ‘Hey,

Snowden’s Access A Reuters report last fall said that Edward Snowden may have persuaded NSA coworkers to give him their log-ins and passwords by telling the employees that the information was needed for him to do his job as a computer systems administrator. In an online Q&A last month, Snowden took a direct shot at Reuters reporter Mark Hosenball: Q: Was the privacy of your co-workers considered while you were stealing their log-in and password information? A: “With all due respect to Mark Hosenball, the Reuters report that put this out there was simply wrong. I never stole any passwords, nor did I trick an army of co-workers.” (T WP)

let’s conspire with him to steal information,’ ” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The employee who resigned, a civilian, had his security clearance revoked in November and was notified of a proposal to fire him. He resigned Jan. 10, said the memo, which was addressed to members on the House Judiciary Committee. The other two individuals, a U.S. military service member and a contractor, had their access to NSA facilities and material revoked in

August, the memo said. They all worked at a regional NSA facility in Hawaii, where Snowden was a contract employee for Dell and later Booz Allen Hamilton, officials said. The resignation appears to be the first personnel action to result from the breach. Snowden, who has been granted temporary asylum in Russia, shared large amounts of intelligence material with several journalists. Their stories began appearing last June and have stirred debate over the

proper scope of NSA surveillance. According to the memo, written by the NSA’s legislative affairs director, Ethan Bauman, the civilian allowed Snowden to use his public key infrastructure certificate to gain access to classified information on NSANet, the agency’s intranet, “access that he knew had been denied to Mr. Snowden.” The memo stated: “Further, at Mr. Snowden’s request, the civilian entered his PKI password at Mr. Snowden’s computer terminal. Unbeknownst to the civilian, Mr. Snowden was able to capture the password, allowing him even greater access to classified information.” Lawmakers expressed concern Thursday about the security lapses at the agency. “It is unacceptable that the NSA’s security protocols and breaches were so easily circumvented,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Judiciary Committee. “This is the same NSA that asks us to trust that it will keep safe massive amounts of data on innocent Americans, and that we should have faith in its internal policies and procedures.” ELLEN NAKASHIMA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Will My Cable Bill Go Up Now?

Hearsay

How does this affect who I can choose for cable? Actually, it probably doesn’t. Cable companies have carved up the country in a way that means that the two companies don’t actually compete directly for paying television customers.

Will prices go up? The Wall Street Journal’s Tom Gara muses: “In theory, a larger provider would have the purchasing power and efficiencies needed to keep prices down. … But for subscribers who have seen decades of consolidation take place alongside rising prices and infuriatingly poor service, it’s easy to remain skeptical.”

I have Comcast. What happens to me?

OK, but is this deal really going to happen?

There likely will be new service options. But one thing to watch for: To head off regulatory concerns and keep its ownership of the entire cable marketplace below 30 percent, Comcast said it plans to offer to shed about 3 million subscribers. If you’re one of them, you may end up needing to get service elsewhere.

The deal has to be approved by the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice. Already, consumer groups are protesting the merger. But analysts say Comcast has a strong chance of approval with antitrust regulators. They will argue that their business doesn’t compete directly in local markets with Time Warner Cable. The firm is also known as a lobbying powerhouse.

NOAH BERGER (AP)

Comcast announced Thursday that it plans to buy Time Warner Cable in an all-stock deal worth more than $45 billion. The proposed merger would create a company with extensive control over content and Internet services and would have a major effect on the country’s telecommunications industry. But what does it mean for you? CECILIA K ANG AND HAYLEY TSUK AYAMA (THE WASHINGTON POST/E XPRESS)

“There’s going to be a lot of people for whom this is going to mean nothing, but for the few it does impact, it means the world.” — Brielle Harrison, above, a software engineer for Facebook, which said Thursday it is adding a customizable option with about 50 different terms people can use to identify their gender. Harrison is changing her Facebook identity from Female to TransWoman.

Frosty relationship between two powers spans several fronts

Italian Premier Enrico Letta lost support of his coalition, leading him to resign. ROME

Italian Premier to Resign Italian Premier Enrico Letta announced Thursday that he is resigning after a party rival withdrew essential support for the tattered, 10-month-old coalition government with the aim of getting the premiership for himself. Letta said he will hand in his resignation to Italy’s president on Friday. He cited the overwhelming vote against him by his Democratic Party leadership. (AP) BRUSSELS

Belgium Votes to Extend Euthanasia Rights to Kids

Washington The weather is warm at this year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, yet U.S.-Russian relations are still in the deep freeze. Back in 2009, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton gave Russia’s top diplomat a red button labeled “reset” to symbolize how relations had thawed. But the event fell f lat. Russian President Vladimir Putin hopes hosting the Olympics will further seal his nation’s status as a world power. But President Barack Obama is among several western leaders who decided not to show up. Here are three of the issues where U.S.-Russian relations have run off course.

The Fate of Ukraine

Washington and Moscow are in a standoff over Ukraine, which is rocked by anti-government demonstrations over Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s rejection of an agreement with the European Union and his acceptance of a $15 billion loan package from Russia instead. Both the U.S. and Russia accuse the other of meddling in the affairs of the former Soviet satellite nation. And last week the two tangled after a Russian government aide posted a video online of a bugged phone call between two top U.S. diplomats. At one point, a voice believed to be Assistant Secretary of State for Europe Victoria Nuland, is heard saying, “F--- the EU,” in an expression of frustration over the EU’s pace in taking steps to help Ukraine. Nuland later apologized.

Brutality on Display in Turkey

The symbolic “reset button” in 2009 failed to unthaw U.S.-Russia relations.

Civil War in Syria In the bloody war in Syria, Russia is in Syrian President Bashar Assad’s corner and the U.S. supports the opposition. The Russians made a proposal to place Syrian chemical weapons out of Assad’s control, a proposal embraced by the U.S., U.N. and other nations. But peace talks

to end the civil war in Syria are not going well, and have been accompanied by a sharp rise in violence. Moreover, Russia says it would veto a Western-proposed U.N. resolution threatening sanctions if Assad’s government does not allow full deliveries of aid to civilians caught in the fighting.

‘Gay Propaganda’ The Olympics also has been a venue for debate over a Russian law, signed by Putin in June, banning gay “propaganda” from reaching minors. The law has drawn strong international criticism and calls for a boycott of the Sochi Games. A coalition of 40 human-rights and gay rights groups wrote a letter to the 10 biggest Olympic sponsors, urging them to denounce the law and run ads promoting equality for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people. U.K.: Scotland Will Lose Pound if It Leaves Britain

Belgian lawmakers voted Thursday to extend the country’s euthanasia law to children under 18. The law empowers children with terminal ailments who are in great pain to request to be put to death if their parents agree and a psychiatrist or psychologist find they are conscious of what their choice signifies. (AP)

The White House is dropping its insistence that Afghanistan sign a crucial security pact within weeks, suggesting it could be willing to wait to see whether Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s successor might be easier to work with in deciding how many U.S. and international troops remain in Afghanistan when combat concludes at the end of the year. Karzai further exacerbated tensions with Washington on Thursday by releasing 65 accused militants from a former U.S. prison near Kabul. The American military angrily denounced the move, saying the men are Taliban fighters. (AP)

In Brief

Scotland has been warned. If it votes to leave the United Kingdom later this year, then the new country walks away from the pound. That’s the hard-line and potentially game-changing message presented Thursday by U.K. Treasury chief George Osborne, who ruled out a currency union in a speech in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. “The pound isn’t an asset to be divided up between the two countries after breakup as if it were a CD collection,” Osborne said. “If Scotland walks away from the U.K., it walks away from the U.K. pound.” Underscoring the importance of

the day, senior leaders for all three major parties took to the airwaves and backed Osborne’s remarks — an unusual show of unity on any issue other than national security. Pro-i ndependence leader Alex Salmond reacted angrily to Osborne’s speech, describing the attack on his planned currency union as an effort to bully Scottish voters. Being part of a sterling zone has been the centerpiece of the Scottish National Party’s strategy to guarantee a secure, stable transition. Scotland’s referendum on independence is in September. Polls have consistently put support for independence at between 25 percent and 30 percent over the past three years. DANICA KIRK A (AP)

The estimated number of people killed in February by government shelling and airstrikes with makeshift barrel bombs in Aleppo, the largest city in Syria, according to Syria activists. The killings come while Syrian government and rebel delegations have been at a stalemate during peace talks in Switzerland. (AP)

Catching a Lift Like millions of other people around the globe, I’ve been treated to a whole lot of inspiring athletic performances this week. But there’s one I just can’t stop thinking about. It involved a daring stunt that demanded both strength and strategy. The crowd of spectators shrieked with disbelief. Was he really going to pull this one off? Yes! Yes! He’d be taking home the gold … mattress. If you haven’t watched the YouTube video of a guy getting off a Metrobus with a full-sized block of foam, please do so now. (Search “dc bus mattress.”) I haven’t been able to track down his identity, but I

recognize cojones when I see them. This move ranks up there with any quadruple toe loop or Yolo flip. Maybe part of the reason it’s left such an impression on me is that I actually have experience in transporting stuff via transit. Lugging luggage or groceries on the Metro or the bus is tough enough, so I can fully appreciate the difficulty level here. I also know exactly how annoyed I’d be if anyone attempted to take

up that much space during rush hour. (Metro frowns on that practice, too.) Assuming, however, that he managed this feat without ruining anyone else’s day, this could be a new sport I would totally watch. In search of more competitors, I surveyed my friends to f ind out about the largest things they’ve hauled by Metro or bus. And I found enough folks to f ield an entire team. There’s the dude who carried a 5-foot-tall poster about Jupiter, the woman who rode around with an Ikea headboard, and my accidental captain, who wound up on a bus with a flatscreen TV she’d bought on Craigslist. The plan had been to hail a cab, but she couldn’t find one. That’s when a bus driver spotted her, suggested she hop on board and helped her carry it on — where another passenger also pitched in. (The true sign of a great Olympic sport? There are sappy stories about the competitors that make you tear up.) My concern is that this event might not have much of a future. By the next Olympics, it’s conceivable that transit riders won’t need to carry anything other than a cellphone. A flurry of new apps devoted to delivery have landed in D.C. — Instacart does groceries, Washio handles laundry and Postmates promises to bring you absolutely anything. (A spokesperson explained that does not include furniture at this time. But it’s coming.) So Mattress On The Bus Guy won’t get many more chances to shine. Good thing he’s probably well rested for whatever lies ahead.

Make a date next week to weigh in on the north-south corridor for the DC Streetcar project (dcstreetcar.com). The District Department of Transportation is holding its second series of public meetings about the line, which could connect the Takoma/Silver Spring area to the SW Waterfront/Buzzard Point area. A second wave of snow headed for the Washington region late Thursday afternoon, piling atop what already was the winter’s most significant snowfall and threatening to bury once more streets, sidewalks and parked cars cleared since the first snow ended in the morning. The first bad weather — a nasty combination of snow, sleet and punishing wind — descended on Washington before dawn Thursday to find that the region had shut down for the day. After a winter of smaller stuff, it was finally a regionwide wallop. The snow that fell overnight and into Thursday morning blanketed Washington, shuttering local schools, government offices and airports and leaving highways treacherous for the few who dared to venture onto them. Warned by reports of how the same storm brought life to a standstill Wednesday in several Southern states, the bad weather arrived here overnight to find a region resigned to the same fate. Power outages — that bane of bad weather — were surprisingly absent by midday Wednesday, but utility companies stood ready for problems if ice and freezing rain topped the heavy snow to bring down their lines. While there were no major road accidents with fewer drivers out on the highways, there was one reported fatality related to the weather. A Virginia Department of Transportation contract worker was killed while clearing snow on Belmont Ridge Road in Ashburn, state police said. The man had pulled

his truck onto the shoulder of the roadway shortly before 6 a.m. and was standing near the vehicle’s rear spreader when he was struck by a VDOT dump truck, police said. In a region given to bashing weather forecasters for getting it wrong, there was little for the cynics to complain about this time around. “I never really believed it,” James Beaner, 40, said of the forecast as he commuted from St. Mary’s County, Md., to downtown D.C. “I didn’t think it was going to stop anyone from doing anything.” The Tastee Diner in Bethesda maintained its 44-year tradition of staying open 24/7, except for Christmas Day. “Snowmageddon, you name it, we’ve been here,” said manager Beth Cox. “There are people who have to be out in this weather — firefighters, police officers, anyone who needs to work 24 hours — and they need a place to eat.”

‘Snochi’ In a highly unscientific online Washington Post poll, 60 percent of readers voted against naming the snowstorm (perhaps in rebellion against The Weather Channel’s lame storm names? It christened this one Pax.) Still, that didn’t stop suggestions from flooding in, including the “Valenstorm.” But the general favorite seemed to be Snochi or Snowchi — which seemed perfectly timely and appropriate … until we looked up the temperature at the Olympics: a high of 64 degrees. Jane Beard, 58, is a weather geek. She reads forecasting models and charts, and she is a fan of Big Weather. So on Thursday, outside her home in the Colesville area of Silver Spring, Beard was delighted by the measurement she took of the snowfall: 13 inches. Still, there was a ways to go. It was only half of what she had recorded as the record snowfall in her yard: 26 inches, during Snowmageddon of 2010. As the snow switched over to rain and the wind picked up, Julie Kirtz, 54, strode down the middle of deserted McKinley Street NW. “It’s gorgeous,” she said. “I love it, absolutely love it. I grew up in California, moved to Alaska.” “I have to go back and sit in front of my computer all day, so it’s time to get out and enjoy it,” she said. Peak of a Rivalry As the Blue Devils and Terrapins prepare for their last ever, regularseason men’s basketball game as ACC foes, former players and coaches revisited the two seasons that defined a heated rivalry — when the two teams won back-toback titles in the early 2000s. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Maryland swingman Dez Wells looks to inbound the ball during last year’s game against Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Terps lost the game 84-64.

So Hard to Say Goodbye The final Maryland-Duke game — it doesn’t seem possible. The Terrapins and the Blue Devils are supposed to be forever locked in a rivalry like the Jets and the Sharks, each side stunning the other with last-second baskets, unlikely upsets and insane fans who make it the nation’s best college basketball rivalry.

No fraternity row couch was ever safe from bonfires after a Terps victory over the Blue Devils. Neither was Route 1 — as the College Park campus overflowed onto the streets after annual games. But it ends SatBy Rick Snider urday in Durham, N.C., where snooty Duke fans like to cheer “Not our rival” to Maryland players despite cramming every inch of

the outdated, cramped arena. North Carolina is closer to Duke, but Maryland is the latter’s nemesis. The Cameron Crazies loved intimidating Maryland players inbounding the ball by nearly touching them with outstretched arms and chanting barbs while pretending to be so above it all. Maryland fans didn’t pretend to hate Duke; they made it obvious. From the raucous, personalized “Rock and Roll Part II” ending to chanting an obscenity at Duke guard J.J. Redick that

was heard live on national television (forcing university officials to temper freedom of speech with restrictions on shirts and signs), Terps fans were all in for two hours. The worst part about Maryland leaving the ACC for the Big Ten this fall is the end of the Maryland-Duke series. Conference officials were so angry over the Terps’ departure after 41 years, they kept Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State away from College Park on this season’s schedule. North Carolina was Maryland’s chief rival until the 197778 season, when an emerging

Duke beat Maryland three times. Suddenly, a generation shifted focus to the Blue Devils. Duke leads the series 110-63, but Maryland has quite a few memorable upsets. Buck Williams and Albert King led Maryland to a 1980 shocker that was one of coach Lefty Driesell’s signature victories at Cole Field House. The rivalry peaked in 2001, when Duke beat Maryland in the Final Four. Equally excruciating was the Terps blowing a 90-80 lead with one minute remaining for a 98-96 loss earlier that season. But Maryland seems to save its best games for Duke. The final meeting at Cole Field House in 2002 saw the Terps upsetting the No. 1 Blue Devils, before Maryland went on to win

the national title. Maryland beat Duke last year in the final game in College Park. Technically, the two could meet in the annual Big Ten-ACC Challenge. sports Four Nats Storylines For Spring Training

JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

1. Who’s the fifth starter? Ross Detwiler is the leading contender and incumbent, but he will still have to earn it. He threw only 71⅓ innings over 13 starts last season, limited by an oblique strain and ruptured disk in his back. On his heels will be Tanner Roark and Taylor Jordan, and perhaps Ross Ohlendorf.

Nationals manager Matt Williams looks over his spring training schedule in his kitchen last month at his home in Paradise Valley, Ariz.

Meet the Nats’ New Boss

Williams looks to use his past to shape his approach as manager Nationals

One fall afternoon shortly after the 1996 baseball season, Matt Williams sat in the backyard of his Phoenix home, fishing out of the pond he stocked with bass. The life ahead of Williams seemed so simple. He had done the hopeful calculation of a 30-year-old ballplayer convinced of the order of the world. By the time he turned 40, his career with the San Francisco Giants would be winding down. His three young children would be out of the house soon after, off to college and jobs. He would travel with his wife to all the places he had never seen: Ireland, Asia, anywhere he wanted. “You have these thoughts and these plans,” he said. Baseball had made him a star — he collected Gold Gloves at third base, made All-Star teams and once

“I tend to take things very seriously. … When I show up to the ballpark at spring training at 5 o’clock in the morning, it’s all about that. I don’t deviate very well from the path.” — N AT ION A L S M A N AGER M AT T W ILLIA M S

threatened the single-season home run record. His searing intensity won him a nickname, the Big Marine, and uncommon respect — players he intimidated would later call him one of their favorite teammates. He devoted himself to family — “I could tell when I first met him,” his wife, Tracie, had told a Sports Illustrated reporter two years earlier, “that this was a family man.” Now, as he fished, the phone rang. The Giants general manager, Brian Sabean, told him he had been traded to the Cleveland Indians. He remembers, in his shock, hearing Sabean ask whether he could get to Cleveland for a news conference. That February, he reported to Winter Haven, Fla., for spring

training. Tracie flew in later to meet him, walked through the door and said she wanted a divorce. “She told me that she had fallen in love with somebody else and that she was going to go in that direction,” Williams said. “When you get word like that, what do you say?” The jarring, one-two punch altered Williams’ path. He thinks often about how his hardest, darkest year ultimately led to all he has now. He would never have requested a trade to Arizona. He would never have met Erika Monroe, his wife for the past 11 years and the mother of 10-year-old daughter Madison. He would never have become the fifth manager of the Nationals, the job he began this week, when spring

training opened in Viera, Fla. “I learned a lot about myself that year, and how resilient you can be,” Williams said. During his 17-year career, Williams experienced the highs of chasing records, and the lows of being sent down and getting released. The many phases of his career, he believes, prepared him to manage. Williams can relate to any player. He may never have had the raw ability of Bryce Harper or Stephen Strasburg, but he played with Barry Bonds. He can be honest when he tells Danny Espinosa, who was sent down to the minors last season, he knows what he’s going through. “I’m genuinely interested in them as people and how they do,” he said. Williams is ready for the next step in his life. He wants to win a World Series and make Washington his home. “Everything that happens in your life brings you to where you are now,” Erika said. “I think Matt’s been able to see that now.”

ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

2. Are Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg healthy? Both players say they’re healthy, feeling better than before and ready for spring training. Strasburg has said his offseason preparation was normal after he finished his six-week rehab from surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow. Harper, above, however, recently wouldn’t commit to being fully ready for the start of spring training.

3. What is Danny Espinosa’s role? General manager Mike Rizzo and Matt Williams have both told Espinosa that he will be given a fair opportunity to win his job back. While Espinosa could ultimately wind up as the Nationals’ backup infielder, he isn’t even considering that option. He said no one has mentioned being a backup and all he wants is a fair shake at being the everyday second baseman.

4. How will Ryan Zimmerman look at first base? The Nationals plan to get Zimmerman some reps at first base during spring so that he can get acclimated. Zimmerman is still the Nationals’ everyday third baseman, but by getting him some work across the diamond they are building versatility. Zimmerman already knows that Williams wants him to play about 10 to 15 games at first, particularly against tough left-handed pitchers that will force Adam LaRoche to the bench. SOCHI 2014

Christensen takes gold just six months after his dad’s death

A newly minted American medalist was sharing his thoughts — something about making history — when a certain song ringing out from fans in the stands stopped him midstream. “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Yes, they were skiing in Russia. But on a warm-and-sunny afternoon that goes down as the greatest in the history of a young sport making its Olympic debut, the slopestyle course was All-American. Joss Christensen, Gus Kenworthy and Nick Goepper swept the podium for the United States on Thursday in slopestyle skiing, each throwing down versions of their sport’s vaunted triple-cork jump to capture one of the rarest triples of all: gold, silver and bronze, respectively. It was only the third time Americans have swept an event at the Winter Games, and the first since 2002, when a trio of snowboard-

ers in Utah did it in the halfpipe to truly bring their sport into the mainstream. The slopestyle medalists were well aware of what they’d accomplished in matching that feat. “We couldn’t have asked for a better way to debut this sport to

the world,” Goepper said. Taken separately, any of these history-making young men would have woven their own wonderful story on the day of their resplendent, high-flying Olympic debuts. On this day, they came as a package deal.

Christensen, 22, of Park City, Utah, was the last add-on to the American team, hitting his form at just the right time after a sixmonth period of heartbreak that began when his father, J.D., died of a heart condition. Christensen was traveling to New Zealand for a contest when his dad died. He landed, turned around and flew back home. “I hope he’s looking down and smiling, and I hope I made him proud,” Christensen said. Kenworthy, 22, of Telluride, Colo., has generated buzz at the Olympics as a dog lover. He found a stray mom and her litter of four near a bus stop in the mountains and has been tweeting photos of himself with the dogs, making arrangements to bring them back to America. “Kind of a fairy tale,” Kenworthy said. Goepper, 19, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., grew up in hoops country, but as a kid, he preferred bumming rides to the 300-foot-high ski resort nearby. He sold candy bars and worked odd jobs to pay for the start of his career. EDDIE PELLS (AP)

Plushenko Retires After Withdrawal Figure Skating Evgeni Plushenko’s Olympics are over. His competitive career, too. The Russian star retired Thursday just after he withdrew from the men’s event at the Sochi Olympics for medical reasons. The 31-year-old Plushenko is the only modern-era figure skater to win medals in four Olympics. He helped Russia win the team gold over the weekend. “I think it’s God saying, ‘Evgeni, enough, enough with skating,’ ” said Plushenko, who originally was hurt in a training session Wednesday. “Age, it’s OK. But I have 12 surgeries. I’d like to be healthy.” In warmups before the short program, he fell on a triple axel and said it felt “like a knife in my back.” He skated toward his coaches while bent over, then tried to loosen up by skating around the Iceberg Skating Palace some more. He then attempted another axel and botched it, shook his head and consulted with coach Alexei Mishin. When Plushenko’s name was announced to the crowd seconds later — to loud applause — he skated to the event referee and withdrew. Before leaving the ice, he held up both hands to the crowd as if to say he was sorry, and took a small bow. BARRY WILNER (AP)

I don’t care for most romantic comedies. Not because I don’t like romance, but because the “com” often gets left out of the rom-com.

WARNER BROS. PICTURES

Most characters in romantic comedies are onedimensional, and flat people can’t do comedy. They can say jokes, but “saying jokes” is very different. Well, comedy is what you get with “About Last Night” — at least for half the movie. A remake of the look-how-YOUNG-Rob-Lowe-is 1986 film, the movie is about two couples, and it spends about equal time with each. Which is its major flaw. Danny and Debbie (Michael Ealy and Joy Bryant) are very nice, attractive people who are a total snoozefest. Bernie and Joan (Kevin Hart and Regina Hall), on the other hand, are one of the funniest romcom couples in recent memory. I imagine that the original function of Bernie and Joan was merely comic relief, cutting the sweetness of the central pairing, but Hart and Hall build them into such smart, robust characters that Danny and Debbie feel like an afterthought. I spent most of Danny and Debbie’s screen time wondering when Bernie and Joan would be back. I would pay money to have Bernie and Joan in the corner delivering commentary on the movie itself, “Mystery Science Theater 3000”-style. I want to hang out with Bernie and Joan. Often. Because Bernie and Joan are so much more interesting than Danny and Debbie, and their relationship is more realistic — and I’m saying that about a couple who, at one point in the film, have sex when one of them is wearing a chicken mask. Danny and Debbie are nothing but objects for each other to want, while Bernie and Joan are just fine as individuals — and even better together.

TRANSITION TO FILM ROLES

Kevin Hart, left, and Regina Hall, right, play a couple who put sex before romance in “About Last Night.”

Stealing Scenes, Stealing Hearts Friends Regina Hall and Kevin Hart clicked perfectly on the set of ‘About Last Night’ Film It’s hard to believe Regina Hall is telling the truth when she insists, “We don’t want to steal the scene.” In “About Last Night,” a new remake of the 1986 rom-com, she and co-star Kevin Hart steal every scene they’re in. The two play Joan and Bernie, a couple who link up due purely to physical attraction and then spend the rest of the film either having sex or talking about sex (they also

fall in love because, come on, the film is opening on Valentine’s Day.) “We both had the same goal, which is to elevate the material,” Hart says, backing up Hall’s claim. “It wasn’t to one-up one another; it was, ‘How do we make the material better? It’s already good; how do we make it great?’ ” Hart, who also stars in current smash “Ride Along,” and Hall, last seen in “The Best Man Holiday,” were friends before “About Last Night” started shooting, but they had never worked together. On the set, the two found they had a natural chemistry but very different working styles. “Not only is she going to show up, she knows what she has to do

and she knows it inside and out,” Hart says. “Now, I may just show up. I may not have read s---.” “Kevin is so talented, though,” Hall says. “He can be in the moment, he can improv …” “Don’t follow my method,” Hart interrupts. Hart’s off-script skill comes from his success as a stand-up comic, though the years onstage can work against comedians who try to make the transition to film. “Some comedians, their only goal is to be funny,” Hart says. “They don’t understand that some things have to be grounded. It gets crazy because [for them] it’s just about getting a laugh.” It’s a problem Hart doesn’t have much anymore. “Younger me? Yes,” he says. “But the more you work, the more you understand. It’s growth. With anything, you want to show growth.” “About Last Night” contrasts the relationship between Joan and Bernie with that of typically sweet couple Danny and Debbie (played by Michael Ealy and Joy Bryant). Hart and Hall say they worked hard to create real characters in a believable, if unorthodox, story. “There’s so much warmth between the two,” Hall says. “We wanted to make sure the audience saw that. We wanted people to look at those characters, to root for them, to recognize themselves.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (E XPRESS)

Sharing a Wi-Fi network brought together neighbors Rahsan Baatin and Victoria Murray, who lived a floor below him. They later married.

It can take a lot to get some women to notice a great guy, even if he lives right above her. In Victoria Murray Baatin’s case, it took a car running her down as she walked across the intersection at Seventh Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue, one August night in 2009. While recuperating at home in her Capitol Park Plaza apartment (201 I St. SW; 202-488-4500; capitolparkplaza. com) that weekend — she amazingly suffered no broken bones or major injuries — Murray Baatin, 30, looked for a Wi-Fi signal from her computer. Despite living there for more than a year, she hadn’t gotten her own network. She found a password-protected signal named “$5mo.,” with a phone number after it. She called the number. Later that day, Rahsan Baatin, 38, — the guy she had teased about wearing a too-tight T-shirt in the laundry room one morning and who happened to live directly above her — came down to collect her $30 check for six months of Wi-Fi and give her the password. They hit it off immediately. “Rahsan was just a complete gentleman and a good friend and just sort of took it upon himself to be my little nurse helper,” the D.C. arts administrator says. “I didn’t know this guy from Adam, and he was, like, pulling glass out of my head.” The two, who married in 2011, are not CONTINUED ON R3

alone. With shared amenities and building-sponsored parties, it’s getting easier for singles to find love in their apartment complexes. “It’s nice to see that people aren’t meeting out in bars and clubs as much,” says Match.com relationship expert Whitney Casey. “Alcohol’s a great social lubricant, but it’s not always the best way to judge someone’s character.” Lauren Nunnally, 28, first saw her now-fiance Michael Comeau, 29, in the elevator of her apartment building, Flats 130 (130 M St. NE; 866-300-2916; f lats130 .com), in May 2012.

When employers move, it can send employees scrambling. Next week’s issue explores whether renters follow for short commutes.

When the doors opened on the eighth floor, Comeau, who owns a clothing business, walked in and caught her eye. “He was dressed to the nines,” Nunnally says. “Even his shoes were unbelievable.” Nunnally got pushed to the back of the car, so they didn’t speak. But after work that day they ended up on the same Metro car back home from Judiciary Square. “I’m a really shy person, and I get really red when I’m nervous,” says Nunnally, a senior analyst with the Government Accountability Office, “but for whatever rea-

Even if you two are a good match, revealing your new relationship status to others in the building might feel a little weird. PRICE POINT

If you haven’t yet found a partner in your apartment building, there are plenty of other places to look. According to Match.com’s fourthannual Singles in America study, released Feb. 5, the top three ways D.C. singles said they met the person they’re currently dating were 1) online dating (20 percent), 2) through a friend (16 percent), and 3) at a social event (15 percent). To make these stats work for you, Match.com relationship expert Whitney Casey recommends you do these three things. (Yes, all of them. Don’t just pick one.)

Jessica Brown Findlay, left, and Colin Farrell are lovers in a magical world.

‘Winter’s Tale’ Is Mostly Slush Film Review When it comes to melodrama, few actors deliver the goods like Colin Farrell, with his expressive eyebrows and flair for summoning big fat tears. He’s perfectly cast in “Winter’s Tale,” a shamelessly sentimental fable based on Mark Helprin’s 1983 novel. Farrell plays Peter, a thief on the run from his former boss, Pearly (Russell Crowe). Pearly is infuriated that his protege wants to steal from people without killing them. Peter has fallen for Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay from “Downton Abbey”), an heiress with wavy red locks and a beatific smile. But this angel’s fate is sealed: She’s dying of consumption. Everything falls apart when the

time-traveling starts. Most of the film takes place in the early 1900s, but another portion unfolds in the present day, following an unaged and amnesiac Peter as he meets a woman (Jennifer Connelly) and her cancer-stricken daughter. Up until that point, there’s a lot to like in “Winter’s Tale.” The characters are memorable, even the bit parts. “Winter’s Tale” is ambitious with its otherworldly ingredients and temporal leaps. It’s not always a success, but the movie has one thing going for it: spot-on casting. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The romantic remake adds nothing to the cornball ’80s original Film Review When Franco Zeffirelli brought “Endless Love” to the big screen in 1981, the result was a corny, poorly received teen romance starring Brooke Shields. More than three decades later, “Endless Love” is back, and what does this new version offer? A different set of actors, a Valentine’s Day release date and kissing. Kissing in place of character development and dialogue, even entire kissing montages where a meaningful plot should be. The movie feels like Nicholas Sparks fan fiction as David Elliot (Alex Pettyfer), a wrong-side-of-thetracks type, falls for blond bookworm Jade Butterfield (Gabriella Wilde). Both are recent high school grads, but Jade is bound for Brown, while David has no plans beyond valeting at the local country club and working as a mechanic in his dad’s shop. And just when shooting stars should be streaking across the sky, along comes Jade’s father, Hugh (Bruce Greenwood), an epic killjoy, who reminds everyone that love doesn’t pay the mortgage. He’s clearly been studying the villain’s handbook and uses whatever means possible to drive a wedge between Jade and David. And you’ve got to admit, he has a point. Jade and David make out at the library and in a fountain; they go

This movie takes us no deeper than physical attraction. “Endless Love” didn’t amount to much in 1981. And it doesn’t fare better today. Think outside the box of chocolates this Valentine’s Day!

‘Tim’s Vermeer’ (PG-13) Director: Teller Stars: Tim Jenison, Penn Jillette In a Nutshell: Inventor Tim Jenison seeks to understand the painting techniques used by Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer. Quick Take: The highly watchable documentary puts forth an utterly fascinating and fairly compelling argument. One drawback of “Tim’s Vermeer” is that we can’t see the finished product of Jenison’s labors in the flesh, though on camera his “Vermeer” comes across as remarkably close to the original. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

to pianos, onto his canvas. Then, like it was some insane paint-bynumbers, all he had to do was keep applying oil paint until the picture matched the projection. Easy enough! Except not. Jenison was determined to use only technology that would have been available to Vermeer, so he made his own oil paints, built most of the furniture that appears in the finished work, and constructed the lenses for his very own Vermeer-era camera obscura. For a documentary about painting, there’s very little actual painting in “Tim’s Vermeer”; the months of development and preparation make up the bulk of the film. At the end, though, Jenison ends up

with a painting that looks eerily like “The Music Room” but was made by a guy who’s never taken a painting class in his life. “The question we get most is, ‘Is Tim some sort of savant?’ ” Jillette says. “All Tim is is a really smart guy — but I’ve known smarter guys. There’s nothing supernatural or creepy or weird about him. He just works really hard.” So, with enough time and money and discipline, can anyone create a photorealistic painting? The movie seems to suggest that. As Jillette wraps up this interview, he says, “I’m looking forward to our next film: ‘Kristen’s Caravaggio.’ ” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (E XPRESS)

You can’t see Vermeer’s “The Music Lesson,” since the painting hangs in a part of Buckingham Palace that’s not included on the tour. But if you’re a friend of Tim Jenison’s, you can get pretty close. Jenison developed a technology that enables anyone with enough patience and a particular brand of obsessive mind to replicate the Dutch master’s signature, photorealistic look. Jillette Moreover, it may be that Jenison’s technique is the same one that Vermeer himself used 350 years ago. That intersection of art and technology is the subject of “Tim’s Vermeer,” which opens locally Friday. The documentary follows the Texas-based inventor’s yearlong struggle to copy “The Music Lesson” so well that no one could tell the difference. Penn Jillette, who produced and narrates the film (his usually silent magic partner, Teller, directed), is a longtime friend of Jenison’s. “I was working all the time and I realized that, for a few months, I had not talked to anyone that either I wasn’t getting paid for, or wasn’t a member of my immediate family,” Jillette says. “So I called Tim and said, ‘I just gotta talk to a friend.’ He jumped on a plane because he’s that kind of guy, and I said, ‘Talk to me about something I’m interested in but cannot possibly be involved with.’ And he said, ‘How much do you know about Vermeer?’ ” W hat Jen ison k ne w — or thought he knew — was that Vermeer used a camera obscura to project an image of the objects in his studio, everything from people

DEAR MANOLO

FORGO THE TIRED roses-andchocolates combo for something more original this Valentine’s Day, like heart-shaped macarons from Macaron Bee ($2 each, $24 for 12; 1669 Wisconsin Ave. NW; 202-3380216, macaronbee.com). Flavors include red velvet, raspberry yogurt and pink champagne, which are all naturally gluten-free (bonus!). Other flavors like chocolate lavender and pistachio are also available, though not in the aww-inducing shape.

ANSWERS FROM THE SHOE BLOGGER

Not only is weather here abominable, but worse, my boyfriend won’t be able to get back from Atlanta in time for Valentine’s Day. Can you please, please suggest some shoes that will cheer me up? —MONICA

Haute Hygiene CUT CARROTS! Serve cheese! A wooden cutting board is so useful, it’s hard to remember it can also serve as a petri dish for bacteria and icky viruses. Good thing Brooklyn furniture restorer Christophe Pourny concocted a Cutting Board Tonic ($22, Salt & Sundry, Union Market, 1309 Fifth St. NE; 202-5561866, shopsaltandsundry.com). Pourny blends vinegar with rosemary and walnut oils for a conditioning, sanitizing blend.

sun seem like a fantasy right now. Until you pop into Georgetown’s new Calypso St. Barth boutique (3307 M St. NW; 202-337-1371, calypsostbarth.com), which hawks beachy, breezy women’s clothing like striped knit tunics ($150) and bohocool dresses (shown, $495) plus shore-worthy housewares including pillows and throws.

Manolo says, just the mere two weeks ago, the Manolo was mocking the apocalyptic prognostications of the weather people, and now, ayyyyy! The real Snowpocalypse is finally here! And now, the Manolo is regretting his insouciance. Although, one must admit that the current situation is very much like the fairy tale of the Weatherboy Who Cried Winter Storm Wolf. If every little flurry of flakes is greeted with the shouts of panicked trepidation, then when the

real storms of ice arrive we will all be out on the roads, where we will encounter the fellow drivers who have only recently arrived from exotic places such as Equatorial Guinea and Miami, where ice is merely theoretical. At that point, after you have abandoned your car alongside the road and are trudging home through three miles of ice and snow in your flippity-flops (because you had rushed out at the last minute to buy extra feathers for your down comforter) you will be drawing up elaborate plans of revenge on weather peoples involving ice floes, arctic seas and hungry polar bears. Drawing A Blank Add personality to your walls with four impossible-to-mess-up DIY canvas projects Like a blank page, a craft-store white canvas holds a world of creative possibilities. But limitless potential can also incite artistic anxiety. Should you splash some paint on it à la Jackson Pollock? Mod Podge it with photos? Leave it as it is and call it “minimalist?” The short answer is “yes” — there’s really no wrong way to express yourself. If you still need a little help, consider one of these inexpensive (including the canvas, they all cost less than $20) and easy ideas. TEXT AND STYLING BY HOLLEY SIMMONS (EXPRESS); PHOTOS BY JASON HORNICK (FOR EXPRESS)

Written on the Wall What you’ll need: Two 16-inch by 20-inch cotton canvases. Black acrylic paint. A pencil. A #8 Filbert brush. A quote or lyric you love.

It doesn’t matter how poor your handwriting: The more character it has, the better this craft will turn out. Select a quote, saying or song lyric (we chose a line from Beyonce’s “Flawless”) and, using a pencil, sketch it onto the canvases ($9 for a two-pack, utrecht.com). Make sure it’s spelled correctly! Dip a #8 Filbert brush ($8, utrecht.com) into a dollop of black paint ($2.30 for 2 ounces, utrecht .com) and trace over the penciled words.

Chalk It Up What you’ll need: One 16-inch by 20-inch canvas. Rubber gloves. Chalkboard spray paint. Chalk.

This project couldn’t be easier: Put on your gloves and hold a can of chalkboard spray paint ($4, homedepot.com) six inches away from your canvas ($6, utrecht.com). Spray an even coat on the surface. (Make sure you’re outside or in a well-ventilated space.) While you’re waiting for it to dry (approximately 10 minutes) brainstorm ideas to scribble on your new board. We used ours for sewing inspiration, though we can also see it used as a menu for dinner parties.

More Ideas

On the Dots What you’ll need: One 16-inch by 20-inch cotton canvas. Gold Dura-Lar film. Gold card stock. Spray adhesive. A 1-hole punch. Loose change. Pen. Scissors. Log on to readexpress .com for instructions on how to create this dreamy , drippy pastel painting.

Using a pen, trace the shapes of a penny, nickle, dime and quarter onto the gold Dura-Lar film (a shiny plastic craft material, $6, utrecht.com) and card stock ($6, papersource.com). Cut out 20 of each size. Use the hole punch ($2, staples.com) to make 40 tinier circles. Cover the entire canvas with a coat of spray adhesive ($6, utrecht .com) and, starting at the bottom, arrange the circles in descending size in a scattered manner.

STAR DISTRIBUTOR Jose Posada You have the nicest young man handing out Express at Twinbrook. Jose is always polite and with a smile. ---Twinbrook Metro Rider

FACE TIME

Omar Popal As the co-owner of Napoleon Bistro and Lounge — the romantic French bistro in Adams Morgan — Omar Popal has seen his fair share of first dates and anniversary dinners (1847 Columbia Road, NW; 202-299-9630, napoleondc.com). Recently, he expanded the intimate Champagne lounge in the basement, where a secret door leads you to a mixeduse gallery, Cru, that’s sure to get steamy. What goes on at Cru? The literal translation means raw. Everything other than the bathroom and the bar will change according to the event. It’s raw because whatever we decide to do in the space will encompass that space. We’ll host musical concerts as well as pop-up art shows. Right now we have work from two local artists, Decoy and Cory Oberndorfer, on the walls. Why did you choose to have a focus on Champagne and sparkling wine? Most people don’t know that spark-

ing wine can be had with dinner and it’s just as robust and encompassing as a wonderful red or white. Part of the reason we decided to make the downstairs a Champagne bar was to educate the consumer and expose them to boutique and small family-owned vineyards. Plus, there’s nothing more French than Champagne. Do you see people committing any Champagne no-nos? The most recent one was someone ordered a Champagne and Red Bull. But to each their own! We’re in the hospitality industry.

Is there a glass of something you recommend to impress your Valentine’s Day date? One of my favorite sparkling wines right now is a cava made in Spain called Mont Marcal. It’s from one of those under-the-radar houses and it’s not expensive at all ($9 a glass). You must host a lot of couples. We’ve seen it all — from first dates to anniversaries to proposals to wedding dinners. We’ve seen couples who have met here and have their anniversary dinners here. They tell us they got married because they met here. We have this one guy who brings all his first dates here. It’s great. If I didn’t own the place, I’d bring all my first dates here, too. Have you ever overheard any bad pick-up lines? I’ve heard this one guy say, “Excuse me ma’am, you’ve dropped something,” as he walks past a woman. And the woman will say, “What?” and he’ll say, “Your smile.” What’s happening at Cru and Napoleon on Valentine’s Day? We’ll have a four-course menu at Napoleon prepared by our two-star Michelin chef Gerard Pangaud ($49 per person, including one glass of Champagne). At Cru, we’re screening love-themed films as part of the Les Lutins Short Film festival ($10, films repeat every hour on the hour). There will be Champagne, macaroons and caramel popcorn. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
