Atlanta dodged the first punch of a dangerous winter storm Tuesday, but forecasters warned of a potentially “catastrophic” second blow in the form of a thick layer of ice that threatened to bring hundreds of thousands of power outages and leave people in their cold, dark homes for days.

The streets and highways in metro Atlanta were largely deserted as people in the South’s business hub heeded advice from officials to hunker down at home, especially after the epic snow jam two weeks ago that saw thousands of people stranded on icy, gridlocked roads for hours when 2 inches of snow fell.

As Syrian talks drag on, regime reasserts control in civil war

Analysis Even as he fights to hold on to power, Syrian President Bashar Assad has agreed to destroy a significant part of his arsenal and to join negotiations whose stated aim is to remove him from his post.

Those seemingly contradictory moves may point to a shrewd strategy: negotiate, play for time and hold the West at bay while his troops wear down an increasingly divided and dysfunctional rebel force on the battlefield no matter the cost.

So far the strategy has been working.

Since peace talks began in Switzerland on Jan. 24, Assad’s forces have stepped up the pace of aerial

Belgium Mulls Kids’ Right to Die Brussels Belgium, one of the few countries where euthanasia is legal, is expected to take the unprecedented step this week of abolishing age restrictions on who can ask to be put to death — extending the right to children for the first time.

The legislation appears to have wide support in the largely liberal country, with one opinion poll finding 75 percent of Belgians in favor.

But it has also aroused intense opposition from foes — including a list of pediatricians — and everyday people who have staged noisy street protests, fearing that vulnerable children will be talked into making a final, irreversible choice.

Tommy Wells Life story: Wells, 56, came to D.C. in 1983 at the age of 26: a Texas-born, Alabama-raised scion of a Minnesota family. He took a job with D.C.’s child welfare agency and became one of a few employees willing to speak out about its systemic failings — not enough workers, not enough support — as the city was hit by the triple crisis of crack, AIDS and fiscal mismanagement. Wells won a school board seat in 2000, then ran six years later for the Ward 6 seat.

He had long been in the public eye as a child welfare advocate, but sought to make a mark in transportation, planning and development matters.

Schools consider calendar changes to make up for lost time Washington As Washington braces for another predicted snowfall tonight, area school systems are counting the days and hours they need to make up if their students spend yet another day home from school.

A major storm could bring as much as 14 inches of snow, with the highest totals in the region’s western and northern suburbs. By Thursday morning, heavy snow could snarl traffic and close hundreds of schools throughout the region. And the snow days have been adding up quickly.

A Lead After Nearly 40 Years Police ID ‘person of interest’ in one of the area’s most famous cold cases

Authorities have identified a sex offender incarcerated in Delaware as a “person of interest” in the nearly 40-year-old disappearance of two Montgomery County, Md., girls, who vanished after leaving home to go to a mall.

Police appealed to the public for more information about Lloyd Lee Welch Jr., 57, at an afternoon news conference Tuesday, saying he was at Wheaton Plaza the day Sheila and Katherine Lyon, 12 and 10, went missing.

Police said Welch, who was 18 years old at the time, was seen “paying attention” to the sisters. He has been convicted of raping girls in Virginia, South Carolina and Delaware, they said, and worked as a ride operator for a carnival company that travelled around the country.

The disappearance of the Lyon sisters is one of the most high-profile unsolved cases in the D.C. area and it prompted a massive police search and investigation in the weeks, months and years that followed.

The girls set out from their Kensington, Md., home around 11 a.m. on March 25, 1975, to have lunch and window shop at what was then called Wheaton Plaza, now Westfield Wheaton Mall. They were last seen by their 15-year-old brother, Jay, at the mall around 2 p.m.

The sisters never returned home and their father, John Lyon, then an announcer on WMAL radio, reported the girls missing that night.

Police used dogs, helicopters and foot patrols to comb the area, but turned up no sign of the girls.

The case received widespread media attention and thousands of tips flooded in from across the

area and the country. At the time, The Washington Post reported the disappearance drew “intense public involvement that sometimes … bordered on hysteria.”

Psychics offered clues, a woman said she spotted the girls and their captor in the audience of a TV show, and a group of citizens band radio enthusiasts — some reportedly armed — chased cars after a man reported seeing bound and gagged girls in the backseat of a station wagon.

More than a dozen people reported their daughters were approached at local malls by a microphonewielding man, who wanted to record the girls’ voices. Police put out sketches of the man, but that lead, like so many others, led nowhere.

On the five-year anniversary of the disappearance of the Lyon sisters, Montgomery County police sergeant Rodney Ingels said investigators were baffled.

“Except for a helluva lot of work, we’re no further than we were,” he said.

On Tuesday, police said Welch is from the D.C. area, but traveled around the country in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. They said he was arrested in the mid-1970s on a burglary charge near Wheaton Plaza, and that he was known to hitchhike and walk along railroad tracks around the D.C. area.

“Welch was considered a drifter,” Police Chief Tom Manger said.

During the 1970s and ’80s, police said, he often stayed in hotels and homeless shelters.

Welch was convicted in 1998 in New Castle County, Del., of charges including first-degree unlawful sexual intercourse and second-degree unlawful sexual contact.

White, the best snowboarder of his era and one of the best-known and best-marketed athletes at the Sochi Games, didn’t even win a medal. He finished fourth.

The 27-year-old American, who opted out of the Olympic slopestyle debut and put all his chips in the halfpipe, where he hoped to win a third straight gold medal, got knocked off by Iouri Podladtchikov, the Russian-born inventor of the “Yolo,” the trick that White could not master.

“I’m disappointed,” White said.

“I hate the fact I nailed it in practice, but it happens. It’s hard to be consistent.”

The Japanese pair of 15-yearold Ayumu Hirano and 18-yearold Taku Hiraoka won silver and bronze, and the Americans were shut out on the halfpipe for the first time since the sport was introduced to the Olympics in 1998.

Podladtchikov, 25, who now lives in and competes for Switzerland, landed the trick successfully at an event in Europe last season, but hadn’t done it since.

White watched the replay of I-Pod’s trick last March on his computer and went to work trying to match it.

heavy favorite to become the seventh person to win three straight gold medals in an individual event at the Winter Games.

On White’s first of two runs in the final, his attempt at the Yolo ended with a fall that left him sliding down the halfpipe on his backside.

I-Pod had scored an 86.5 in his first run — clearly in medal contention — and then won it on his second attempt. The Yolo includes a total of 1440 degrees of spin — two head-over-heels flips and two 360-degree turns. He landed it and even though he only threw five tricks, when most riders were trying six in a supersized, superslushy halfpipe, the judges liked what they saw.

His 94.75 in the second finals run put huge pressure on White.

White’s first two jumps of his second finals run were flawless.

Then, the Yolo. The form looked good during his three seconds in the air, but on the landing, he skittered down the pipe and lost speed.

White’s score of 90.25 was only good enough for fourth.

“I saw videos of Shaun doing it really well,” I-Pod said of the Yolo.

Canada’s Dominance Continues Freestyle Skiing The lasting image of freestyle skiing pioneer Sarah Burke is her everpresent smile, the one that helped inspire kids across Canada to slap on their skis and open their minds.

In an event that Burke’s extraordinary vision helped bring to the Olympics, Dara Howell channeled her idol’s style.

Mouth agape after a spectacular run, Howell continued Canada’s dominance at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park by soaring to gold as women’s slopestyle skiing made a sometimes inauspicious Olympic debut.

“I said the other day that I really hope a Canadian brings home a gold medal and it will be for Sarah,” Howell said. “This medal is definitely for Sarah. She pushed the sport.”

Burke died in 2012 at age 29 following an accident while training on the halfpipe.

A charismatic and accomplished performer and one of the key players in expanding freestyle skiing’s role in the Olympics, she served as a role model to a large swath of the Canadian freestyle team, including the 19-year-old who found herself atop a podium on Tuesday.

Conditions not ideal as temperatures hit above 50 in Sochi Cross-country skiers are looking for precisely the right wax to cut through the mush. Jumpers are trying to land in snow that’s way too soft. Freestyle skiers and snowboarders are bailing out of their best tricks on courses that, even way up on the mountain, are melting under the Sochi sun.

Temperatures climbed well above 50 degrees even on the Sochi Games’ highest hills, exposing huge patches of green around the mountain venues.

Bode Miller went from pre-race favorite during training runs down an icy hill to eighth-place finisher when the downhill course got slushier Sunday. He was still second-guessing himself Tuesday for not trying a different ski setup.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, head of the local organizing committee, told The Associated Press that it hasn’t been warm enough to warrant tapping into reservoirs of snow stored near the mountain venues. Dismissing handwringing over the weather, he said: “It’s not a big surprise for us. We’re a subtropical city.”

After watching Miller train, Sasha Rearick, the head U.S. men’s Alpine coach, explained how skis slide on a colder, harder slope, and turn on a warmer, softer one.

A racer who comes from a technical background, such as Miller, gets more help on the ice than the slush, Rearick said.

Asked whether he was surprised about the temperatures so far, Rearick chuckled.

“I’ve spent a lot of time here.

Norway Wins Four Medals To Take Lead Roundup The most decorated country in Winter Olympic history earned four more medals Tuesday.

Norway won double gold in the cross-country freestyle sprints while picking up silver medals in the women’s sprint and in the women’s 10-kilometer biathlon pursuit.

That gave the Norwegians the medal lead as the games concluded their fifth day, and it pushed their overall total to 317 since the Winter Olympics began in 1924.

U.S. cross-country skier Kikkan Randall, a gold-medal hopeful, was eliminated in the qualifying rounds of the women’s freestyle sprint. Maiken Caspersen Falla of Norway took the gold in that race, with teammate Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg earning silver.

Ola Vigen Hattestad captured the men’s sprint title in a race marred by a three-skier collision.

Emil Joensson of Sweden, who had all but given up earlier in the race, grabbed the bronze after Sergey Ustiugov of Russia, Marcus Hellner of Sweden and Anders Gloeersen of Norway were involved in a crash that left them sprawled across the course. When Bowie, Md., native Mike Lonergan became the coach at George Washington in 2011, one of his first priorities was to heavily recruit in Maryland, Virginia and the District.

The Colonials (19-4, 7-2 Atlantic 10) have six players on the roster who played high school basketball in the region. But international players have also keyed the Colonials’ resurgence as they head into tonight’s game at VCU (19-5, 7-2).

Senior Nemanja Mikic (Serbia), a member of the team when Lonergan arrived, had 11 points in just his third start of the season in a win against Duquesne last week.

That trust shows up on the court, as GW had 20 assists on 32 baskets in a 93-67 win Saturday against Fordham. The Colonials, who made 16 shots in a row at one point, had at least three players score in double figures in the first nine conference games.

Third-year coach Lonergan notes the foreign players went to high school or prep school in the United States before heading to Foggy Bottom.

“It is not like we are going to find them,” he said. “They are here

[in the U.S.] already.”

Former GW coach Mike Jarvis had success in the 1990s, thanks in part to international players as well.

“I think it is pretty cool,” Lonergan said of the foreign connection.

“Those kids value an education.

They have high basketball IQs, and like Americans they want to go to the NBA.” Perhaps it is fitting that behind the scorer’s table at the Smith Center the school’s marketing department puts up the flags of Argentina, Serbia, Denmark, Greece and Puerto Rico for each game.

GW’s chemistry will be tested in a stretch of four games, starting today, that includes three opponents that have been nationally ranked at some point this season: at VCU (tonight), vs. UMass (Saturday) and at No. 12 Saint Louis (Feb. 22).

Though ratings are a shell of what they used to be, there’s no denying the staying power of “Idol,” the classic singing competition series. Even in its 13th season, it’s still pulling in about 13 million viewers per episode. (Granted, that’s just about the lowest in the show’s history.) But for a reality series that old, the numbers are still solid — and “Idol” is doing everything it can to reinvent itself to a happy place in a post-Cowell world, with a cheery new panel of judges including Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr.

Would you believe “The Voice” debuted less than three years ago but has already aired five seasons? Even though the judges’ chair-spinning gimmick in the early rounds is starting to lose its luster, the fifth season’s ratings were on par with those of “Idol.” The spring edition kicks off soon with Usher and Shakira joining the Adam Levine/Blake Shelton bromance. The buzz is still strong, and with former winners Cassadee Pope and Danielle Bradbery having recent hits on the country charts, it’s clear the show is able to produce a real star.

It’s another stab at a singing competition, and it sounds just wacky enough to work.

ABC’s president Paul Lee announced during the 2014 winter press tour that “Rising Star,” adapted from an Israeli series, will debut this summer with a twist: Instead of viewer votes shrouded in secrecy, people will be able to see votes in real time, on a screen, as the contestant is singing. Sound complicated and somewhat demoralizing?

ABC probably hopes so, though they still have to work out those pesky time zone issues.

Although stretching the definition of “singing competition,” “Killer Karaoke” challenges people to sing karaoke while going through “extreme and outrageous circumstances” (cactus maze, anyone?).

Despite trying to make it a real fall contender in 2011, this a capella competition is at its strongest airing over just a few weeks during the holiday season. Ratings for the finale hit a low at the end of last year, and there’s no word yet on a fifth season — though strong word-of-mouth could bring it back for another spectacle in December 2014. “The Sing Off” is also yet another show to try the “really, them?” tactic for recruiting its judges: Jewel, Ben Folds and Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman.

‘Copycat’ ON MTV (IN PRODUCTION)

Meanwhile, MTV is casting for “Copycat,” which tracks down people who sing exactly like their idols. Set to host is Jonathan Bennett, who you might remember from “Mean Girls” as looking sexy with his hair pushed back.

Jackman’s Back, Claws and All: Hugh Jackman, left, will once again take up hosting duties for the Tony Awards, the show’s producers announced Tuesday. This year’s show, held at Radio City Music Hall, will mark the “Wolverine” star’s fourth time hosting.
