Archdiocese’s Sins Come to Light After a boy reported in 1979 that a priest raped him and later threatened him at gunpoint to keep quiet, the Archdiocese of Chicago assured the boy’s parents that although the cleric avoided prosecution, he would receive treatment and have no further contact with minors. But the Rev. William Cloutier, who already had been accused of molesting other children, was returned to ministry a year later and accused of more abuse before he resigned in 1993, two years after the boy’s parents filed a lawsuit. Family of Dead SeaWorld Trainer Responds to Film Orlando, Fla. The family of a SeaWorld trainer who died in 2010 when a killer whale pulled her into the water responded Tuesday to a documentary critical of animal captivity at the marine parks, saying the woman killed would never have worked there for 15 years if she thought the whales were treated badly. Trainer Dawn Brancheau’s family members said on the website for The Dawn Brancheau Foundation that they’ve been repeatedly asked about how they feel about the documentary “Blackfish” since its release last year. They say they continue to support her former co-workers. Brancheau was grabbed and drowned by the 6-ton killer whale, Tilikum, after a show in February 2010. In one 1989 letter to the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, the Rev. Raymond Goedert worries about parishioners discovering the record of the Rev. Vincent E. McCaffrey, who was moved four times because of abuse allegations. “Unfortunately, one of the key parishioners … received an anonymous phone call which made reference by name to Vince and alleged misconduct on his part with young boys,” Goedert wrote. “We all agreed that the best thing would be for Vince to move. Cloutier over his earliest transgressions because he “sounded repentant,” according to internal archdiocese documents released Tuesday that show how the archdiocese tried to contain a mounting scandal over child sexual abuse. For decades, those at the highest levels of the nation’s third-largest archdiocese moved accused priests from parish to parish while hiding the clerics’ histories from the public.
The documents, released through settlements between attorneys for the archdiocese and victims, describe how the late Cardinals John Cody and Joseph Bernardin often approved the reassignments. The archdiocese removed some priests from ministry, but often years or decades after the clergy were known to have molested children. While disturbing stories of clergy sexual abuse have wrenched the

Salt Lake City The American Civil Liberties Union has sued the state of Utah over the issue of gay marriage, saying the official decision to stop granting benefits for newly married samesex couples has created wrenching uncertainty. The lawsuit filed Tuesday says the state has put hundreds of gay and lesbian couples in legal limbo and prevented them from getting key protections for themselves and their children. “They’ve put a giant question mark over the lives of all these people that have married,” said John Mejia, legal director for the ACLU in Utah. Utah governor’s spokesman Marty Carpenter responded by saying that Gov. Gary Herbert “has said throughout this process that his responsibility is to follow the law. That is exactly what the administration is doing, and we respect the rights of those who disagree to take their grievances before a judge.”

Low Expectations for Syrian Peace Talks In nearly the same breath, the world’s most powerful diplomats have talked about the importance of this week’s peace conference on Syria and downplayed expectations for a breakthrough. The time frame for the talks is a week to 10 days, and then a break — but for what, and for how long? Syria’s Western-backed opposition and President Bashar Assad’s handpicked representatives have never spoken face-to-face and it’s not at all clear how much either side — or their proxy powerbrokers — really want an end to the war that has killed more than 130,000. Here’s a look at some of the participants as the conference opens today.
Rebel Coalition
Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose soldiers have notched up recent military victories, points to the ascendancy of Islamic militants to temper Western enthusiasm for the rebels. He has said he won’t step down and may run again as president later this year. Still, by agreeing to meet them, Assad for the first time has acknowledged an opposition that he has long derided and dismissed as “terrorists.” Complicating matters, three prominent international war-crimes experts said they had received a huge cache of photographs documenting the killing of some 11,000 detainees by Syrian authorities. David Crane, one of the three experts, said that the cache provides strong evidence for charging Assad for crimes against humanity.
Syria’s Western-backed Syrian National Coalition wants a transitional government to replace Assad, reiterating Tuesday that it finally decided to attend the peace conference in order to establish a transitional government with full executive powers “in which killers and criminals do not participate.” Still, the fractured coalition’s ineptitude has cost it the support of most ordinary Syrians as well as a majority of the armed rebels, who reject the talks, making it unclear who exactly the coalition will represent at the talks. The rebels have been plagued by fighting between moderate and Islamist factions. Al-Qaeda-linked groups initially joined forces with moderate rebels at the start of the conflict. But those groups began trying to impose their strict interpretation of Islamic law, alienating other factions and leading to infighting.

Chasing Black Widows Russia has a history of terrorist attacks carried out by women Moscow Russian security officials are hunting down three potential female suicide bombers, one of whom is believed to be in Sochi, where the Winter Olympics will begin next month. The search for the women suspected of planning terrorist attacks at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics has raised one of Russia’s most feared specters — the female suicide bombers known as “black widows.” For more than a decade, women have committed many of Russia’s worst terror attacks, downing airliners, blowing up subway cars and killing people going to a rock concert.

Authorities said both of the bombers were women, and one had a brother who had disappeared in Chechnya.

Holocaust Ties May End Purple Line Bid A French company’s past could keep it off the light-rail project Washington The majority owner of a Paris-based company competing to build and operate the light-rail Purple Line between Montgomery and Prince George’s counties was the target of a Maryland law requiring that firms disclose any ties to the Holocaust when bidding on rail contracts. Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer Francais (SNCF) owns 70 percent of Keolis, part of one of the four private consortiums recently
chosen by the Maryland Department of Transportation to bid on a Purple Line public-private partnership. Historians say SNCF was paid to transport 76,000 Jews and other prisoners to Nazi death camps in World War II. Some Holocaust survivors say SNCF shouldn’t benefit from U.S. government contracts until it pays reparations to the thousands of people it delivered to Nazi camps in stifling, unsanitary cattle cars or their survivors. SNCF’s chairman issued a formal apology to Holocaust victims in 2011. At stake is a 35-year contract valued at more than $6 billion to design, build, operate, maintain

Purple Line bidding process, which is scheduled to award a contract by early 2015. The law was written specifically to address a 2011 bid by Keolis to operate two MARC commuter rail lines, according to two people who participated in the law’s passage.
The 16-mile Purple Line, which would connect Bethesda with New Carrollton via streetcars, would be owned by the Maryland Transit Administration. However, it would not be part of its MARC system. The law does not prevent companies with ties to the Holocaust from bidding on, or winning, state contracts. David Paulson, a spokesman for Maryland’s attorney general, said the office is “looking into” whether the 2011 law would apply to the Purple Line bids. She then directed Sanford to bring a knife, and they stabbed the child, the prosecutor said. The women thought that evil spirits had begun to jump from Norell into the older children, and eventually into Sanford, he said. McCarthy asked that both women undergo mental health evaluations to determine whether they are competent to stand trial. Each is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

A judge ordered the mental health evaluation for Avery and that she be held without bond. He postponed a hearing for Sanford, who also is being held without bond, because it was not clear
which attorneys will represent her. Avery, who appeared by closedcircuit video from the county jail, has a history of mental illness and had once been involuntarily committed, McCarthy said. A jail
employee said an initial evaluation indicated evidence of psychotic thinking and delusions. McCarthy said the women initially planned to conduct an exorcism on an adult male named Troy that night. The women said they had performed exorcisms before, but that none ever became violent. When Troy didn’t show up they became convinced that at least one of the children was possessed, McCarthy said. The relationship between Avery and Sanford is unclear, but both lived in the townhouse with the children. The deadly scene was discovered Friday morning when officers came to the townhouse after a neighbor spotted a bloody knife and a car with an open door just outside. With classes canceled Tuesday (and maybe today) across the region, some school districts are preparing to add extra days to the academic calendar to make up for the lost learning time thanks to many snowy and cold conditions this winter. While many school districts add days to the calendar in the event that bad weather cancels classes, some are running out of days: Tuesday was the fourth snow day for many, and a fifth could come today. The spokeswoman for D.C. public schools said that the school year will be extended in June for the two days already lost to snow.

Wawrinka advances to Australian Open semis vs. Berdych Novak Djokovic’s bid for a fourth consecutive Australian Open title ended in a dramatic five-set quarterfinal loss to Stanislas Wawrinka, potentially leaving the door ajar for a new major champion. No. 8-seeded Wawrinka lost 14 head-to-heads to Djokovic until a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7 win on Tuesday night put him into a semifinal against No. 7 Tomas Berdych. That means there’ll be at least one finalist in Australia who has never won a Grand Slam title. Sellers typically get a little less for their home than they would in the busier spring season, when bids from multiple buyers could drive the price higher. But this trend could work in your favor, if you’re looking to sell first, then buy a new place — particularly a more expensive one. “It may be worth it to lose a little value on the sell side if you’re going to buy,” Menkiti says. In other words, if your place sells for less, then you’re also likely to buy for less. For Rosenberg and Schreck, they felt they came out ahead, despite getting around $10,000 less for the condo than they would have in warmer months.
Because the 2,500-square-foot home they purchased was more expensive than the 975-squarefoot condo they sold, “The money we lost on not selling in the spring was more than made up for by the money we saved by buying in the winter,” Schreck says. With demand as high as it’s been in the past two years, Realtor Tara Cellini of City Chic Real Estate (202-499-4284, citychicreal estate.com) says she hasn’t seen homes selling for much less in winter than they do in spring. One property, listed Dec. 3, had five different offers within the first four days, she notes. “Buyers don’t want to chance waiting till spring, when interest rates might go up.”

A spokeswoman for GE Appliances says the company worked with a composer on long-form instrumental soundtracks for each brand. Here’s the breakdown: Monogram, GE’s luxury appliance brand, features sophisticated piano music plus plucked strings and a harp. Artistry, the entry-level brand targeted toward millennials, plays a garage band-style mix with lots of guitar. GE, the flagship brand, has upbeat brass and swelling wind instruments. Organized Chaos Get to the DC Improv early enough when Todd Glass is in town and you might see the comedian running around the venue, setting up the lights (he likes them dim) as if he’s part of the crew. Before the show, he’ll even do his own introduction. Last Thursday, he had a musician play the sax briefly before his opening act. Because what goes better with comedy than smooth jazz? Despite that Glass comes to the Improv By Rudi nearly every year — Greenberg I’ve seen him there annually since 2012 — his shtick doesn’t get old. Glass noted Thursday that he tries to change his act about 50 percent each year, but that’s mainly because his riffs often spring to mind the moment he steps on stage. He spent his first couple of minutes ribbing the sound guy for not turning up his intro music loud enough. Then, he played around with the reverb on his microphone. The rehearsed jokes he did tell, when he wasn’t ditching them mid-stream for another thought, were mostly bits I’ve heard before, recalibrated for maximum silliness. It was strange and loopy — qualities I hope he brings to the series he’s working on for Comedy Central, or, at least, back to the DC Improv next year. Everyone is trying to crack the code of the modern 20-something. There are endless thinkpieces, Buzzfeed lists and a certain dramedy on HBO starring Lena Dunham. Now there’s “Broad City,” a sharp Web series-turned-cablecomedy created by Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, that debuts tonight on Comedy Central. The best friends and writing partners try a slightly different approach to life in your 20s: Actual reality. The show delves into the everyday indignities that make being a young person in a big city a hilarious — but humiliating — experience. Jacobson and Glazer are on the verge of becoming stars as they write, produce and star in what Comedy Central is hoping will be the channel’s next big hit. The show already has a long list of celeb fans, including Amy Poehler, who serves as executive producer. Their friendship was what led them to create the “Broad City” Web series in the first place. Jacobson and Glazer bonded several years ago as the only women on a New York improv team. In 2009, they started a Web series based on their friendship. “We just sort of thought a Web series would be a cool thing to be able to send to our parents to show them that we were, in fact, actually doing comedy,” said Jacobson, 29. Guest stars include Fred Armisen as a creep who offers Abbi and Ilana $200 to clean his apartment in their underwear, while Rachel Dratch plays a frazzled worker at a temp agency. The key to the show is chronicling minor, relatable moments: Whether it’s awkwardly exiting an uncomfortable small-talk situation or selling stolen office supplies for Lil Wayne concert tickets. “We like to keep the plotlines based in reality, started from a real experience that one of us has had,” said Glazer, 26. They also rely on friends’ anecdotes for ideas. “It seems, like, really salient to use experiences that you know have happened, even if they haven’t happened to you,” Glazer explained. “Then you think, ‘Oh, what would I have felt in that situation?’ And it’s easy to write from a real place.” EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Her Own Personal ‘Blues’ Against Me! delves into its lead singer’s gender transition on its latest album In 2012, Tom Gabel, frontman of the long-running punk outfit Against Me!, came out as transgender to Rolling Stone magazine. The Florida band’s new album, “Transgender Dysphoria Blues,” out Tuesday, is its first since Gabel, now Laura Jane Grace, announced her intention to transition. It is a lacerating, powerful work that is universal in its sweep and wrenching in its detail. In the broadest sense, the album wrestles with topics that are the bedrock of punk songs everywhere — alienation, self-loathing, a longing for acceptance and love. On a micro level, it’s a dark and very specific recounting of a very specific kind of misery. Frequently profane, fraught with sadness and relief, it’s the sound of a dam breaking. Until the 2012 announcement, Against Me! was a well-liked, top-

of-the-middle-tier punk band that survived a brief f lirtation with major-label stardom. Grace is now almost certainly the highest-profile musician to transition, and her new album is part manifesto, part open letter to fans, her wife (to whom she plans to stay married) and her remaining bandmates (two members left after Grace’s announcement, for possi-
bly unrelated reasons). “Transgender Dysphoria Blues” has the hooks and sheen of a majorlabel production, but it is in every other relevant way a typical Against Me! album, with Grace’s voice little altered from the band’s past discs. It’s shorter than it needs to be (the album clocks in at just under half an hour), and glossier, too. It’s also flawed, but still one of
the best albums of this new year. Only a handful of songs specifically address Grace’s transition, but even the songs that are probably about something else seem heavy with metaphor. The tracks that address Grace’s struggles with gender dysphoria fare better than those that don’t: “Osama Bin Laden As the Crucified Christ” is the only song that rages to little effect, seemingly present only to indicate that Grace is capable of thinking about other things. In recent interviews, Grace has expressed doubts about the future of her band, already buffeted by lineup changes and label troubles — and that was before its lead singer came out as a woman in a genre that is still the domain of heterosexual men. This might explain why Grace sou nds more u n happy t ha n relieved. Her album is so thick with death that the tracks “Dead Friend” and “Two Coffins” aren’t its most depressing songs. Kenneth Branagh finds a classic story in the modern ‘Jack Ryan’ Film Since 1989, Kenneth Branagh has directed six Shakespeare adaptations. Turning plays into movies had become his thing. That was until his agent suggested he direct the 2011 blockbuster “Thor.” That film’s success led to Branagh directing “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” the latest film version of Tom Clancy’s CIA series. But Branagh’s love affair with big-budget films doesn’t mean he’s
given up working on epic dramas. “Shakespeare and great myths never end and in a strange way there is also a classical element to Jack Ryan, since he’s this paradox of this everyman who is brilliant,” Branagh says. “My transition isn’t so much about seeking the Hollywood franchise as it was going to those stories and finding Hollywood was as well.” “Shadow Recruit” is not based on a specific Clancy book. Still, says Branagh, “Coming from theater, my background has always been to honor the writer. But as far as I understood it, [Clancy’s] blessing for this project was at arm’s length.” Clancy, who died last October,
