That’s what happened to New Zealand pilot Dennis Horn on Friday, reports The Telegraph. An engine problem forced him to make an emergency landing on a beach about 43 miles north of Auckland. Horn was able to repair the plane and take off again. But as he was attempting liftoff the plane crashed into the surf and flipped into the ocean. No one was hurt. (EXPRESS)

‘We Landed at the Wrong Airport’ Pilots grounded after fliers end up 7 miles from destination
“It was surreal when I realized we could have been in real danger, and instead of an inconvenience, it could have been a real tragedy.”
The pilots of a Southwest Airlines flight that mistakenly landed at the wrong Missouri airport were grounded Monday, less than a day after they touched down at a small airfield that gave them only half as much room as normal to stop the jet. Southwest Flight 4013 was traveling Sunday evening from Chicago’s Midway Airport to Branson Airport but instead landed at tiny Taney County Airport 7 miles away. No one was hurt, but after the 124 passengers were let off the plane, they noticed the airliner had come dangerously close to the end of the runway, where it could have tumbled down a steep embankment if it had left the pavement. “As soon as we touched down, the pilot applied the brake very hard and very forcibly,” said passenger Scott Schieffer, a Dallas attorney. “You could smell burnt rubber, a very distinct smell of

Small Step Made to Syrian Peace Agreement reached on allowing aid to some besieged areas Paris In a first yet fragile step toward peace, Syria’s government and the main but disputed moderate opposition group seeking to oust it have agreed to allow humanitarian aid into some blocked-off parts of the scarred Mideast country. The agreement was announced by the top envoys for the U.S. and Russia, who together are working with the opposite sides to broker progress in any possible way to ease
the bloody strife that has engulfed Syria for nearly three years. The mayor’s office is easily the most visible and important office in the city. Could there be more coverage of other offices? Absolutely. I’m of the mind that more coverage of everything is always better. But to say that anyone should be ignoring the mayor doesn’t make much sense to me.
In your opinion, how much did Gray’s decision to run for another term as mayor affect the dynamic of the race? Is he automatically considered the frontrunner? He’s the incumbent, which by default, to me, makes him so. Let’s also not forget that in the minds of many, he has done a pretty good job. This may sound ridiculous to say, but if you can put aside how Gray got into office, he hasn’t been bad. Then again, for some people, me included, it’s impossible to separate the two.

I know that it’s kind of pollyannaish to think that D.C. will live on in perpetuity with short buildings, but there’s another part of me that thinks that’s exactly why it makes sense. If there’s going to be one city that does it, why not the capital? I think you’ll see a situation that allows for both. Areas that are already somewhat established will keep their height limits, while as new parts of the city are revitalized (a loaded word) or redeveloped, they’ll have less regulation. The Southwest waterfront is one that comes to mind.
Thoughts on the Jay Gruden hire? Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen have put
themselves in a situation from a leadership standpoint that could blow up in their faces. Jay Gruden is going to be leading a staff as a first-time NFL head coach that also features two former NFL head coaches. That strikes me as a difficult situation to manage.
What do you think the real chances are the Redskins are pressured into a name change in the next 10 years? What do you think it will take for that to happen? The next 10 years? I’d say 100 percent. What will it take for that to happen? Someone extremely important to Snyder, say, his wife for example, convincing him to do so.

Some Cabs Face Credit Card Snafu Washington Passengers hoping to pay for their cab rides with plastic may run into some trouble over the next few days. Officials at the D.C. Taxi Cab Commission said Monday that Gleike, one of eight companies responsible for providing credit card processing services to D.C. cab drivers, has stopped operating. The closure means that an estimated 846 cabs that used the service will have to find another company to process their passengers’ credit and debit card payments.
Neville Waters, spokesman for the D.C. Taxi Cab Commission, said that drivers who used Gleike’s services won’t face sanctions as long as they can prove they are making an effort to find a new payment processing company. This is the third payment processing company to cease doing business with D.C.’s cabbies since the District made it mandatory for all cabs to accept credit cards. A First Lady for the Ages Michelle Obama hits the half-century mark Friday, and, by her own account, she feels more relaxed now that her husband’s days as a candidate are over. “I have never felt more confident in myself, more clear on who I am as a woman,” Obama told Parade magazine when asked about her 50th birthday. But in the public eye, misperceptions still linger. What’s true, what’s not and what will we take away from her days as the nation’s leading lady? ROBIN GIVHAN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

MYTH: Michelle Obama is the most fashion-friendly first lady.
Obama has been a pronounced and polished advocate for American style, seamlessly moving from custom-made evening gowns to massmarket fare. Yet other first ladies have had more personal relationships with designers — and opened the White House doors to them in a way Obama has not. Jacqueline Kennedy designated Oleg Cassini her official dressmaker, and the style they created inspired generations of women and designers. Lady Bird Johnson in 1968 hosted a formal fashion show that involved models parading through the State Dining Room as the wives of visiting governors looked on. In 2005, Laura Bush’s presence at New York’s Fashion Week rippled through the industry like the Second Coming. Obama has celebrated creativity through the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt Design Awards, but she has maintained distance from the industry. Jason Wu, designer of her two inaugural gowns, didn’t meet her until the first was installed in the Smithsonian a year after she wore it.

The first lady is renowned for her Let’s Move campaign to fight childhood obesity through healthy eating and exercise. One of her first projects upon settling into the East Wing was sowing the White House Kitchen Garden. She even gave out dried fruit on Halloween — President Barack Obama joked that it would get the White House egged. Her focus on the nation’s eating habits has led to complaints that she wants to deprive Americans of dessert. But Obama repeatedly expresses her belief in moderation, talks about her affection for french fries and unapologetically went in for a 1,700-calorie splurge at Shake Shack in 2011.

Fighting childhood obesity and supporting military families have been the first lady’s most formal and most publicized campaigns. But the guiding principle of her tenure has been a belief in youth mentoring and “paying it forward.” She introduced mentoring as an institutional commitment in 2009, pairing 13 Washington-area high school girls with top female White House staff members. A similar program for boys came later. White House arts workshops, visits to underserved schools and the inclusion of young people at state events are now standard practice and may be her most lasting legacy.

Michelle Obama’s fashion is making history again, at least for the next year, as her second inaugural gown will be displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. Before it’s stowed away for a future presidential library, Obama’s rubycolored chiffon gown made by designer Jason Wu is being lent to the National Museum of American History for a year to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Smithsonian’s first ladies exhibition. The dress will be paired with Obama’s shoes designed by Jimmy Choo and goes on display beginning today. This is the first time the museum has displayed a second inaugural gown. (AP)

Familiar foes. Rivalry showdowns. Talk about a pair of appealing title-game tussles. It’s Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady — Round 15 — in the AFC championship game Sunday, while the San Francisco 49ers square off against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC title bout. “It’s the Broncos versus the Patriots and certainly Tom and I have played against each other a lot,” Manning said, “but when you get to the AFC championship, it’s about two good teams that have been through a lot to get there.” The Broncos (14-3) opened as 6½-point favorites for the game at Denver. “That’s two of the greats,” Denver wide receiver Eric Decker said. “It’s going to be talked about a lot throughout the week.” Manning and Brady have squared off 14 times throughout their careers, with the Patriots quarterback holding a 10-4 edge in the head-to-head matchup, including a 34-31 overtime victory in November. They each have a win against the other in the AFC championship game: Brady in the 2003 playoffs and Manning in the 2006 postseason with Indianapolis. And the winner went on to win the Super Bowl each time. But, it’s not necessarily the same old story this time around. A-Rod Sues MLB, Union Baseball Alex Rodriguez sued Major League Baseball and its players’ union Monday, seeking to overturn a season-long suspension imposed by an arbitrator who ruled there was “clear and convincing evidence” he used three banned substances and twice tried to obstruct the sport’s drug investigation. As part of the lawsuit filed in federal court in Manhattan, the New York Yankees third baseman made public Saturday’s 33-page decision by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz, who shortened a penalty originally set at 211 games last August by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig for violations of the sport’s drug agreement and labor contract. “While this length of suspension may be unprecedented for a MLB player, so is the misconduct he committed,” Horowitz wrote in his decision Saturday. Penalties Are Adding Up Capitals near bottom of NHL in amount of times short-handed Capitals For as much attention as their potent power play garners, the Capitals’ proclivity for putting the opposition on the power play should not go unnoticed. Washington has been shorthanded 163 times this season, which ranked 23rd in the NHL as of Monday. A middling penalty kill that has fallen from first to 19th in the past two months has only exacerbated the problem. In their 2-1 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday, the Capitals committed five minor penalties, killing the last four after allowing forward Tyler Ennis to tie the

game on the Sabres’ first powerplay opportunity late in the first period. (The Capitals’ 4-for-5 performance on the penalty kill was on par with their 80.4 percentage this season.) “I think we had a couple penalties in the second [period], a couple of bad ones, but we killed them,” right wing Alex Ovechkin said. Yet even if the Capitals are successful at thwarting opposing power plays, the sheer amount of time they spend doing so plays a significant role. Penalties disrupt the flow of the game, preventing the Capitals from getting into any sort of rhythm. It is also physically taxing on those
tasked with killing them and forces offensive contributors, such as Ovechkin, to sit on the bench for minutes at a time. “Sometimes when we have those kinds of penalties, you don’t win the game,” Ovechkin said. On Sunday, it was an untimely penalty that cost Washington what likely would have been the gamewinning goal. Defenseman Karl Alzner ripped a shot past Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller with 53 seconds left in regulation, but center Nicklas Backstrom was called for tripping just prior to the shot, negating the goal. The Capitals face the San Jose Sharks at home tonight before playing eight of their next nine games on the road, so they can ill afford to have undisciplined play be their undoing.

Your morning meal needs more protein and healthy fat, says Anne Mauney, a registered dietician (annetherd.com). “What most people eat is high in sugar and carbs, and later, they’re starving,” she explains. It’s not virtuous to stir up your oatmeal packet with water instead of milk — it’s shortsighted. Add the dairy and you’ll help stabilize your mood and cravings, and be less likely to binge later in the day. “And it tastes a million times better,” she adds. There’s a huge variety of options that’ll get you properly fueled up. She suggests grabbing a Greek yogurt, spreading some avocado on your toast or pairing your banana with peanut butter. Or just down a handful of nuts on your way out the door.
“The bedroom should be for sleep and sex and nothing else,” says Dr. Vivek Jain, medical director of the George Washington University Hospital Center for Sleep Disorders (gwdocs.com/sleep-center). The only objects he recommends keeping by your pillow are a notepad and pen. That way, when you can’t drift off because you can’t stop thinking about something you need to do the following day, you can jot down a reminder. “Make a cheat sheet, and then you can forget about it,” he says. An alarm clock is probably a necessary evil: “It’s best to use nature to wake up, but that’s not practical for most people,” Jain says. That doesn’t mean, however, that it needs to stay in your field of vision. If it’s 3 a.m., you’re likely to obsess over that. Instead, keep the time out of sight, and you’re more likely to fall back asleep, Jain says.
Money can’t solve everything. But this small investment will make you smile, promises Brian Gray (smiledc.com), who recommends snapping up one made by Sonicare or Oral-B. “They’re the Lexus and Mercedes,” he says. They’re also a lot more affordable than they were a few years ago. The top-of-the-line models can cost upward of $200, but there are also versions for about $50. While the fancier brushes come with extra modes (“polish,” “gum care”), those bells and whistles aren’t necessary. “For us, we’re more interested in the brushing action and how the bristles move,” Gray says. “I just care that you’re using it.” If you are, he adds, you’re much more likely to have a happy visit to the dentist: “Some people do a great job without an electric toothbrush, but for anyone with dexterity problems, a lot of dental work or who is just lazy, it gets into grooves better.”
Swap any processed grains for whole grains, at breakfast or any other meal. There’s no sacrifice involved in chowing down on whole-wheat bread, brown rice and quinoa. And you’ll get more fiber and nutrients, and fewer additives, Mauney says.
Don’t stress about getting eight hours of sleep a night. Forcing yourself to get into bed when you’re not actually tired or fretting about the fact that you’re up too late won’t solve anything. “Expectations should be grounded in reality. Nobody gets a perfect night’s sleep every night. Some nights you can’t,” Jain says. “We can’t treat our bodies as robots that switch on and switch off.”
Never forget to floss! Gray has a specific technique for making sure you don’t slip up: “Leave it everywhere. Keep it in the car, in your purse, by the TV.” Whenever you have a little free time, it’ll be in reach, so you can break up plaque and give gums the attention they need. “If I pull up at a stoplight and I see someone flossing, I think it’s great,” Gray says.

About Time to Have a Talk A few months ago, I was at a good friend’s house when my son broke a small crystal clock. He was very apologetic, and I offered to pay for it on the spot. She insisted it was a wedding gift she had never loved, that accidents happen, etc. My husband and her husband have since gotten together and the husband twice brought up my son wrecking a family heirloom, only somewhat jokingly. I don’t know how to handle this. FRUSTR ATED Why not take her to coffee and say, “Look, I know you said it was OK about the clock, but it’s been nagging at me. I’d like to pay for it. It would help me feel settled about the whole thing.” No need to mention that the source of the nagging feeling is her hubby. If she still insists that it’s fine, then you can either choose to take

her at her word or mention that her husband has brought it up. We don’t know the real truth here: whether it bothers them both more than they’re letting on, whether it bothers just him or whether his sense of humor is a little skewed and he hasn’t thought about it since. Regardless, at least you’ll know that you tried your best.
You don’t know whether it’s a few coincidental bad moods or something more serious. But it’s a conversation that deserves privacy. Best case scenario, you squeeze in an inquisition while you’re loading the dishwasher — and what’s the point? He might be rushed or defensive, and if there are problems with his partner he won’t want to discuss them then anyway. Give it another visit. Be warm and let him know that you love seeing him. And then call again. Not enough to make him block your number, but enough to let him know that you’re thinking of him. Frame your inquiries as an observation — he hasn’t seemed like himself — and that you want to be available to him in whatever way he needs.

At Synetic Theater’s exercise classes, you’ll play every part When Alex Mills starred as Puck in Synetic Theater’s recent production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the actor didn’t speak any lines from Shakespeare’s comedy. Instead of using words, he told the story with his body, which scurried up ropes and leapt across the ethereal set. “We’re always asked, ‘How do you do that?’ ” says company member Kathryn Elizabeth Kelly. The answer: intense, three-hour fitness and technique classes developed by Synetic founders Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili. Now regular folks can get a taste of Synetic’s rigorous physical training.
Either way, classes begin with intense cardiovascular exercises and then downshift to strength and flexibility training. Instructors borrow from Pilates, kickboxing and dance, but the common ingredient is imagination, says instructor Randy Snight. “If you feel like you are storytelling, your brain focuses on the story you are telling and not how tired and miserable you are,” he says. For instance, at a recent class, as Snight had students relax into a backbend, he told them to imagine they were melting into (the Little Mermaid’s beau) Prince Eric’s arms. “Or whoever,” he amended.

What it is: Students can drop into new 45-minute classes or enroll in a semester of hour-long sessions; those introduce elements of theater movement and mime.
Moves: Don’t get attached to one spot. “We do a lot of traveling across the room, because it involves total body coordination,” says Mills, who’s also an instructor. Students may find themselves hopping like frogs, crab-walking or running with their knees pulled high. Synetic instructors don’t use

For her next feat, the 36-yearold is working to raise the profile of her sport as a coach. To do that, she relocated from California to the D.C. area, lured by the booming Cross-

TV “Pretty Little Liars” has hooked viewers with the twists and turns of four friends who are repeatedly tormented and tricked in their fictional town after their queenbee best friend Alison DiLaurentis is murdered. That’s why many fans of the ABC Family drama were shocked in the show’s annual Halloween episode, when it was revealed (spoiler alert!) that Alison was alive and had been in hiding this whole time.
Tonight’s Episode 8 p.m. ABC Family Spencer (Troian Bellisario, above left), Emily, Aria (Lucy Hale, above center) and Hanna (Ashley Benson, above right) hope to find some answers in Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse) diary. That’s easier said than done, however, as all the entries are in code, so it’s not clear which stories are about whom. “To know that Alison was alive and didn’t do anything … they’re going to have to deal with that.” The series resumed its fourth season last week, and actress Sasha Pieterse, who plays Alison, says even though “the girls find a little bit of satisfaction” in new episodes, it isn’t all roses in Rosewood, Pa. “There’s so much that they’ve been through, and to know that Alison was alive and didn’t do anything when certain things happen to them, I think that they’re going to have to deal with that because that’s painful, too. I think they’re happy that she’s alive, and probably pissed off,” Pieterse said with a laugh in a recent interview. Now that we know Alison is alive, Pieterse will play a more prominent role.

Pieterse says the big questions now are, “Where has she been hiding, and who has she been hiding from?” The 17-year-old South Africanborn actress is thrilled to be part of such a popular series. “TV is so fickle. We get 24 episodes a season. That doesn’t happen as often anymore. It’s a great blessing to be working nine months out of the year.” Pieterse says she auditioned to play the character of Hanna (which went to Ashley Benson) and filmed the show’s pilot when she was 12. The show is also popular internationally, with fans in the United Kingdom, Brazil, France and the Philippines. For fans who can’t wait to see how the series unfolds, Pieterse suggests watching old episodes. “If you go back and watch again, you’ll pick up little pieces,” she said. “There are things to find.” ALICIA R ANCILIO (AP)

Longtime crossword constructor Bernice Gordon is marking two big ones: She turned 100 on Saturday, and The New York Times will publish another one of her puzzles on Wednesday — making her the first centenarian to have a grid printed in the newspaper. “They make my life,” Gordon said. “I couldn’t live without them.” Gordon has created crosswords for decades for the Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and others, including puzzle syndicates and brain-teaser books from Dell and Simon & Schuster. She still constructs a new grid every day. Gordon is credited with pioneering the “rebus” puzzle, which requires solvers to occasionally fill in symbols instead of letters. Her first rebus in the Times used an ampersand to represent the letters AND, so an answer like SANDWICH ISLANDS was entered as

Though now considered standard fare, such a trick was unheard of when it first appeared decades ago. Letters poured into the thencrossword editor at the Times, Margaret Farrar, who forwarded some
to Gordon. “She got hundreds of letters, some screaming that they never saw anything worse and it was cheating,” Gordon said. “And the others (said) how wonderful it was. It was an innovation.”
Gordon was born in Philadelphia on Jan. 11, 1914 (less than a month after the first “word-cross” puzzle appeared). A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, she raised three children before working as an artist and traveling around the world. She began creating puzzles in her 30s because she liked the challenge and it offered some extra money. Farrar was not impressed with her first few attempts, and neither was Gordon’s mother. “My child if you spend as much money on cookbooks as you do on dictionaries, your family would be better off,” Gordon recalled her mother saying. Records are a bit sketchy — the Times didn’t give constructors bylines until the 1990s — but it seems her first crossword was published in the early 1950s. Since then, the paper has printed more than 140 of her clever grids. Dozens of well-wishers attended Gordon’s birthday party in Philadelphia on Sunday. “Already the wheels are turning,” Gordon’s son Jim Lanard said. “What are eight definitions that rhyme with ‘birthday’?” Surely Gordon has that puzzled out by now. The district attorney’s office said Monday that Suleman failed to report nearly $30,000 in earnings while applying for public assistance last year.
