That’s what happened to New Zealand pilot Dennis Horn on Friday, reports The Telegraph. An engine problem forced him to make an emergency landing on a beach about 43 miles north of Auckland. Horn was able to repair the plane and take off again. But as he was attempting liftoff the plane crashed into the surf and flipped into the ocean. No one was hurt. (EXPRESS)

‘We Landed at the Wrong Airport’ Pilots grounded after fliers end up 7 miles from destination

“It was surreal when I realized we could have been in real danger, and instead of an inconvenience, it could have been a real tragedy.”

The pilots of a Southwest Airlines flight that mistakenly landed at the wrong Missouri airport were grounded Monday, less than a day after they touched down at a small airfield that gave them only half as much room as normal to stop the jet. Southwest Flight 4013 was traveling Sunday evening from Chicago’s Midway Airport to Branson Airport but instead landed at tiny Taney County Airport 7 miles away. No one was hurt, but after the 124 passengers were let off the plane, they noticed the airliner had come dangerously close to the end of the runway, where it could have tumbled down a steep embankment if it had left the pavement. “As soon as we touched down, the pilot applied the brake very hard and very forcibly,” said passenger Scott Schieffer, a Dallas attorney. “You could smell burnt rubber, a very distinct smell of

The Investigation A key question for investigators will be why the second Southwest pilot, who was not flying the plane, did not catch the error in time to prevent the mistaken landing. Typically, the pilot not flying the plane is supposed to be closely monitoring navigation aids and other aircraft systems. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating, but officials declined to elaborate. (AP)

burnt rubber as we were stopping.” Branson Airport has a runway that is more than 7,100 feet long — a typical size for commercial traffic. The longest runway at Taney County Airport is only slightly more than 3,700 feet because it is designed for small private planes. After the jet stopped Sunday, a flight attendant welcomed passengers to Branson, Schieffer said. Then, after a few moments, “the pilot came on and said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sorry to tell you

The captain is in his 15th year flying for the carrier. The first officer will mark 13 years in June, the airline said. Jeff Bourk, executive director of Branson Airport, said the Southwest pilot was in communication with the airport tower, which cleared him to land around 6 p.m. The plane touched down a few moments later at the other airport. N.J. Panels Probe ‘Abuse of Power’ Trenton, N.J. Democrats in New Jersey sharpened their aim at Republican Gov. Chris Christie on Monday, forming special legislative committees to explore the role politics played in traffic jams last fall and announcing that the investigation has grown into an abuse of power probe. Small Step Made to Syrian Peace Agreement reached on allowing aid to some besieged areas Paris In a first yet fragile step toward peace, Syria’s government and the main but disputed moderate opposition group seeking to oust it have agreed to allow humanitarian aid into some blocked-off parts of the scarred Mideast country. The agreement was announced by the top envoys for the U.S. and Russia, who together are working with the opposite sides to broker progress in any possible way to ease

the bloody strife that has engulfed Syria for nearly three years. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov are still pushing for a cease-fire in local pockets around the country and a prisoner exchange, which they said would help set the tone for compromise in the run-up to a peace conference scheduled for next week. But even the tentative steps forward that were announced Monday carry high risks of being thwarted by militants. Lavrov noted that rebel insurgents attacked a recent government-sanctioned humanitarian aid convoy to the Palestinian refu-

Potato Diplomacy For some, the somber road to Syrian peace was overrun Monday by potatoes and furry pink hats. A swapping of delegation gifts between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov served as a distraction from predictions of elusive success in Syria. Kerry gave Lavrov Idaho potatoes, after explaining that he was in Idaho over the holidays when he and Lavrov spoke by phone. The Russian, it seemed, associated Idaho with potatoes. “He told me he’s not going to make vodka. He’s going to eat them,” Kerry said of Lavrov. (AP)

gee camp of Yarmouk where there were fresh reports of illnesses and deaths among residents from hunger-related ailments this weekend. The peace process has been beset in recent weeks by chaos within the Western-backed opposition group, known as the Syrian National Coalition, which is one of the only alliances willing to deal with Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government. The coalition is in exile, and has lost widespread credibility within its ranks and among rival opposition officials and rebel groups in Syria who have broken away and are fighting for the upper hand against al-Qaeda-linked militants. WARNING: Alcohol Ruins Lives

Mourners pay respects to former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Monday.

Funeral Held For Divisive Sharon Former Israeli leader mourned by many, reviled by Arab world Jerusalem Ariel Sharon was laid to rest Monday at his ranch in southern Israel as the nation bid a final farewell to one of its most influential leaders — a man venerated by supporters as a warrior and statesman but reviled in the Arab world as a war criminal. After Israeli politicians and international dignitaries honored Sharon, the military funeral carried a more personal tone, with Sharon’s two sons eulogizing their father. But in Gaza, the territory’s Islamic Hamas rulers held a victory parade marking the five-year anniversary of a fierce battle against Israel. In speeches, they mentioned the funeral “of our enemy leader Sharon” and vowed to continue to battle Israel.

Sharon spent most of his life battling Arab enemies and promoting Jewish settlement on war-won lands. But in a surprising aboutface, he led a historic withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005, uprooting all soldiers and settlers from the territory after a 38-year presence in a move he said was necessary to ensure Israel’s security. Gray Looms Large In the Mayoral Race

The mayor’s office is easily the most visible and important office in the city. Could there be more coverage of other offices? Absolutely. I’m of the mind that more coverage of everything is always better. But to say that anyone should be ignoring the mayor doesn’t make much sense to me.

In your opinion, how much did Gray’s decision to run for another term as mayor affect the dynamic of the race? Is he automatically considered the frontrunner? He’s the incumbent, which by default, to me, makes him so. Let’s also not forget that in the minds of many, he has done a pretty good job. This may sound ridiculous to say, but if you can put aside how Gray got into office, he hasn’t been bad. Then again, for some people, me included, it’s impossible to separate the two.

Who do you see as the strongest candidate to unseat Vincent Gray. Muriel Bowser? Jack Evans? Vincent Orange? The three you named, in that order.

buildings in areas that would not greatly impact the skyline? MICHAEL S. WILLIAMSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The media frenzy around Vincent Gray is sucking all the air out of responsible coverage of other elected offices. Jim Graham needs to be By Clinton replaced along with Yates Anita Bonds. Those aren’t small-fry positions. Why not ignore Gray for a bit and give other campaigns more scrutiny?

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray greets supporters Saturday at his campaign kickoff.

What do you think of increased discussion regarding a possible amending of the Height Act? Do you think that in the next decade or two there will be Rosslyn-type

I really hope not. I know that it’s kind of pollyannaish to think that D.C. will live on in perpetuity with short buildings, but there’s another part of me that thinks that’s exactly why it makes sense. If there’s going to be one city that does it, why not the capital? I think you’ll see a situation that allows for both. Areas that are already somewhat established will keep their height limits, while as new parts of the city are revitalized (a loaded word) or redeveloped, they’ll have less regulation. The Southwest waterfront is one that comes to mind.

Thoughts on the Jay Gruden hire? Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen have put

themselves in a situation from a leadership standpoint that could blow up in their faces. Jay Gruden is going to be leading a staff as a first-time NFL head coach that also features two former NFL head coaches. That strikes me as a difficult situation to manage.

What do you think the real chances are the Redskins are pressured into a name change in the next 10 years? What do you think it will take for that to happen? The next 10 years? I’d say 100 percent. What will it take for that to happen? Someone extremely important to Snyder, say, his wife for example, convincing him to do so.

Clinton Yates, a local columnist at washingtonpost.com, offers his take on D.C.’s politics, pop culture and people on Mondays at 10 a.m.

Democrats Aim for a More Gay-Friendly Va. Same-sex marriage and expanded rights are on their agenda Richmond Democratic lawmakers pledged Monday to renew their push to make same-sex marriage legal in Virginia. “Our marriage laws are becoming more antiquated every day,” said

Democratic Sen. Adam Ebbin, who is supporting legislation that would change the state’s constitution. Some Cabs Face Credit Card Snafu Washington Passengers hoping to pay for their cab rides with plastic may run into some trouble over the next few days. Officials at the D.C. Taxi Cab Commission said Monday that Gleike, one of eight companies responsible for providing credit card processing services to D.C. cab drivers, has stopped operating. The closure means that an estimated 846 cabs that used the service will have to find another company to process their passengers’ credit and debit card payments.

Neville Waters, spokesman for the D.C. Taxi Cab Commission, said that drivers who used Gleike’s services won’t face sanctions as long as they can prove they are making an effort to find a new payment processing company. This is the third payment processing company to cease doing business with D.C.’s cabbies since the District made it mandatory for all cabs to accept credit cards. And it is just another in a series of problems that have plagued D.C.’s taxi fleet as it has moved to modernize. LORI AR ATANI (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Fashion Milestone

First lady Michelle Obama is known for her fashion, her lectures on eating habits and her “Let’s Move!” commands. But she’s more than meets the eye.

A First Lady for the Ages Michelle Obama hits the half-century mark Friday, and, by her own account, she feels more relaxed now that her husband’s days as a candidate are over. “I have never felt more confident in myself, more clear on who I am as a woman,” Obama told Parade magazine when asked about her 50th birthday. But in the public eye, misperceptions still linger. What’s true, what’s not and what will we take away from her days as the nation’s leading lady? ROBIN GIVHAN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

1

MYTH: Michelle Obama is the most fashion-friendly first lady.

Obama has been a pronounced and polished advocate for American style, seamlessly moving from custom-made evening gowns to massmarket fare. Yet other first ladies have had more personal relationships with designers — and opened the White House doors to them in a way Obama has not. Jacqueline Kennedy designated Oleg Cassini her official dressmaker, and the style they created inspired generations of women and designers. Lady Bird Johnson in 1968 hosted a formal fashion show that involved models parading through the State Dining Room as the wives of visiting governors looked on. In 2005, Laura Bush’s presence at New York’s Fashion Week rippled through the industry like the Second Coming. Obama has celebrated creativity through the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt Design Awards, but she has maintained distance from the industry. Jason Wu, designer of her two inaugural gowns, didn’t meet her until the first was installed in the Smithsonian a year after she wore it.

2

MYTH: She is a food tyrant of Bloombergian intolerance.

The first lady is renowned for her Let’s Move campaign to fight childhood obesity through healthy eating and exercise. One of her first projects upon settling into the East Wing was sowing the White House Kitchen Garden. She even gave out dried fruit on Halloween — President Barack Obama joked that it would get the White House egged. Her focus on the nation’s eating habits has led to complaints that she wants to deprive Americans of dessert. But Obama repeatedly expresses her belief in moderation, talks about her affection for french fries and unapologetically went in for a 1,700-calorie splurge at Shake Shack in 2011.

3

MYTH: Her legacy will be Let’s Move or Joining Forces.

Fighting childhood obesity and supporting military families have been the first lady’s most formal and most publicized campaigns. But the guiding principle of her tenure has been a belief in youth mentoring and “paying it forward.” She introduced mentoring as an institutional commitment in 2009, pairing 13 Washington-area high school girls with top female White House staff members. A similar program for boys came later. White House arts workshops, visits to underserved schools and the inclusion of young people at state events are now standard practice and may be her most lasting legacy.

“I can’t help but think that, before the Obamas leave office, Michelle will take the handoff from her husband and — head down — go right up the middle for a touchdown.” — ROBERT WATSON, WHO STUDIES FIRST LADIES AT FLORIDA’S LYNN UNIVERSITY AND SAID OBAMA PROBABLY WANTS TO DO MORE BUT IS RELUCTANT TO STEP OUT TOO FAR BECAUSE OF PUBLIC DISTASTE FOR ACTIVE, ASSERTIVE FIRST LADIES

Michelle Obama’s fashion is making history again, at least for the next year, as her second inaugural gown will be displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. Before it’s stowed away for a future presidential library, Obama’s rubycolored chiffon gown made by designer Jason Wu is being lent to the National Museum of American History for a year to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Smithsonian’s first ladies exhibition. The dress will be paired with Obama’s shoes designed by Jimmy Choo and goes on display beginning today. This is the first time the museum has displayed a second inaugural gown. (AP)

Manning-Brady and Carroll-Harbaugh highlight matchups

Harris Tears ACL

AFC Title Game

Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. is out for the rest of the playoffs after an MRI on Monday revealed a torn ACL in his left knee. Harris was injured in the third quarter of Denver’s 24-17 win over San Diego in the AFC divisional round Sunday. After he went out, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers started mounting a comeback, which fell short, largely by targeting Harris’ rusty replacement, veteran Quentin Jammer. (AP)

Patriots vs. Broncos Sunday, 3 p.m. CBS

Familiar foes. Rivalry showdowns. Talk about a pair of appealing title-game tussles. It’s Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady — Round 15 — in the AFC championship game Sunday, while the San Francisco 49ers square off against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC title bout. “It’s the Broncos versus the Patriots and certainly Tom and I have played against each other a lot,” Manning said, “but when you get to the AFC championship, it’s about two good teams that have been through a lot to get there.” The Broncos (14-3) opened as 6½-point favorites for the game at Denver. “That’s two of the greats,” Denver wide receiver Eric Decker said. “It’s going to be talked about a lot throughout the week.” Manning and Brady have squared off 14 times throughout their careers, with the Patriots quarterback holding a 10-4 edge in the head-to-head matchup, including a 34-31 overtime victory in November. They each have a win against the other in the AFC championship game: Brady in the 2003 playoffs and Manning in the 2006 postseason with Indianapolis. And the winner went on to win the Super Bowl each time. But, it’s not necessarily the same old story this time around. Both the Broncos and Patriots have been winning with balanced offenses, relying not only on the strong arms of their record-breaking quarterbacks but also on their

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson said. “That’s our goal. We have 60 minutes of football left.” San Francisco, which lost last year to Baltimore, is looking for a return trip to the Super Bowl. And lots of hard hits and plenty of jawing might be expected in this latest matchup with the Seahawks. “I think we’re the two teams everyone was looking at from the beginning,” 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick said. “It’s going to be a knockdown, drag-out game.” The previous few games between the NFC West rivals have been full of contempt, with shoving, pushing and arguing spicing things up. Even the coaches don’t care for each other. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh have been rivals dating to their days as opponents in the old Pac-10. In 2009, after Harbaugh’s Stanford team ran up the score on Carroll’s USC squad in a 55-21 rout, the two met at midfield and an annoyed Carroll barked, “What’s your deal?” That’s carried over to the NFL — and it might get ramped up again during the week. A Couple Juicy Title Bouts Alex Rodriguez is seeking to overturn a season-long suspension.

A-Rod Sues MLB, Union Baseball Alex Rodriguez sued Major League Baseball and its players’ union Monday, seeking to overturn a season-long suspension imposed by an arbitrator who ruled there was “clear and convincing evidence” he used three banned substances and twice tried to obstruct the sport’s drug investigation. As part of the lawsuit filed in federal court in Manhattan, the New York Yankees third baseman made public Saturday’s 33-page decision by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz, who shortened a penalty originally set at 211 games last August by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig for violations of the sport’s drug agreement and labor contract. “While this length of suspension may be unprecedented for a MLB player, so is the misconduct he committed,” Horowitz wrote in his decision Saturday. Horowitz trimmed the penalty to 162 games, plus all postseason games in 2014. RONALD BLUM (AP)

College Basketball AP Top 25 Poll

Capitals defenseman John Carlson spent 5:38 on the penalty kill in Sunday’s shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

Arizona and Syracuse remain No. 1 and 2 in The Associated Press college basketball poll for a sixth straight week, and six newcomers joined the top 25. The Wildcats (17-0) received 61 first-place votes Monday from the 65-member national media panel while the Orange (16-0) got the other four. After 11 ranked teams lost at least one game, the changes started at No. 3 where Wisconsin moved up one spot to replace Ohio State, which lost two games and dropped to 11th. No. 19 Cincinnati, No. 20 Creighton, No. 22 Pittsburgh, No. 24 Saint Louis, and Oklahoma and UCLA, which tied for 25th, all moved into the rankings this week, helping raise the total to 40 schools that have been ranked at some point this season, just four shy of last year’s total. Penalties Are Adding Up Capitals near bottom of NHL in amount of times short-handed Capitals For as much attention as their potent power play garners, the Capitals’ proclivity for putting the opposition on the power play should not go unnoticed. Washington has been shorthanded 163 times this season, which ranked 23rd in the NHL as of Monday. A middling penalty kill that has fallen from first to 19th in the past two months has only exacerbated the problem. In their 2-1 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday, the Capitals committed five minor penalties, killing the last four after allowing forward Tyler Ennis to tie the

7 P.M. Today | CSN

game on the Sabres’ first powerplay opportunity late in the first period. (The Capitals’ 4-for-5 performance on the penalty kill was on par with their 80.4 percentage this season.) “I think we had a couple penalties in the second [period], a couple of bad ones, but we killed them,” right wing Alex Ovechkin said. Yet even if the Capitals are successful at thwarting opposing power plays, the sheer amount of time they spend doing so plays a significant role. Penalties disrupt the flow of the game, preventing the Capitals from getting into any sort of rhythm. It is also physically taxing on those

tasked with killing them and forces offensive contributors, such as Ovechkin, to sit on the bench for minutes at a time. “Sometimes when we have those kinds of penalties, you don’t win the game,” Ovechkin said. On Sunday, it was an untimely penalty that cost Washington what likely would have been the gamewinning goal. Defenseman Karl Alzner ripped a shot past Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller with 53 seconds left in regulation, but center Nicklas Backstrom was called for tripping just prior to the shot, negating the goal. The Capitals face the San Jose Sharks at home tonight before playing eight of their next nine games on the road, so they can ill afford to have undisciplined play be their undoing.

Eat a Better Breakfast.

Rearrange Your Nightstand.

Buy an Electric Toothbrush.

Your morning meal needs more protein and healthy fat, says Anne Mauney, a registered dietician (annetherd.com). “What most people eat is high in sugar and carbs, and later, they’re starving,” she explains. It’s not virtuous to stir up your oatmeal packet with water instead of milk — it’s shortsighted. Add the dairy and you’ll help stabilize your mood and cravings, and be less likely to binge later in the day. “And it tastes a million times better,” she adds. There’s a huge variety of options that’ll get you properly fueled up. She suggests grabbing a Greek yogurt, spreading some avocado on your toast or pairing your banana with peanut butter. Or just down a handful of nuts on your way out the door.

“The bedroom should be for sleep and sex and nothing else,” says Dr. Vivek Jain, medical director of the George Washington University Hospital Center for Sleep Disorders (gwdocs.com/sleep-center). The only objects he recommends keeping by your pillow are a notepad and pen. That way, when you can’t drift off because you can’t stop thinking about something you need to do the following day, you can jot down a reminder. “Make a cheat sheet, and then you can forget about it,” he says. An alarm clock is probably a necessary evil: “It’s best to use nature to wake up, but that’s not practical for most people,” Jain says. That doesn’t mean, however, that it needs to stay in your field of vision. If it’s 3 a.m., you’re likely to obsess over that. Instead, keep the time out of sight, and you’re more likely to fall back asleep, Jain says.

Money can’t solve everything. But this small investment will make you smile, promises Brian Gray (smiledc.com), who recommends snapping up one made by Sonicare or Oral-B. “They’re the Lexus and Mercedes,” he says. They’re also a lot more affordable than they were a few years ago. The top-of-the-line models can cost upward of $200, but there are also versions for about $50. While the fancier brushes come with extra modes (“polish,” “gum care”), those bells and whistles aren’t necessary. “For us, we’re more interested in the brushing action and how the bristles move,” Gray says. “I just care that you’re using it.” If you are, he adds, you’re much more likely to have a happy visit to the dentist: “Some people do a great job without an electric toothbrush, but for anyone with dexterity problems, a lot of dental work or who is just lazy, it gets into grooves better.”

Swap any processed grains for whole grains, at breakfast or any other meal. There’s no sacrifice involved in chowing down on whole-wheat bread, brown rice and quinoa. And you’ll get more fiber and nutrients, and fewer additives, Mauney says.

Don’t stress about getting eight hours of sleep a night. Forcing yourself to get into bed when you’re not actually tired or fretting about the fact that you’re up too late won’t solve anything. “Expectations should be grounded in reality. Nobody gets a perfect night’s sleep every night. Some nights you can’t,” Jain says. “We can’t treat our bodies as robots that switch on and switch off.”

Never forget to floss! Gray has a specific technique for making sure you don’t slip up: “Leave it everywhere. Keep it in the car, in your purse, by the TV.” Whenever you have a little free time, it’ll be in reach, so you can break up plaque and give gums the attention they need. “If I pull up at a stoplight and I see someone flossing, I think it’s great,” Gray says.

Nice Way to Ruin A Day Together

BEN CLAASSEN III

My grown son and his partner come to visit us every month or two. These visits used to be quite pleasant, but now my son seems scattered and distracted whenever we talk. I’m worried that something is going on with him, but he’s not returning my phone calls or emails. I plan on bringing it up at their next visit — whether his partner hears it or not — but my husband thinks that’s a bad idea. YOUR RULING, PLEASE?

About Time to Have a Talk A few months ago, I was at a good friend’s house when my son broke a small crystal clock. He was very apologetic, and I offered to pay for it on the spot. She insisted it was a wedding gift she had never loved, that accidents happen, etc. My husband and her husband have since gotten together and the husband twice brought up my son wrecking a family heirloom, only somewhat jokingly. I don’t know how to handle this. FRUSTR ATED Why not take her to coffee and say, “Look, I know you said it was OK about the clock, but it’s been nagging at me. I’d like to pay for it. It would help me feel settled about the whole thing.” No need to mention that the source of the nagging feeling is her hubby. If she still insists that it’s fine, then you can either choose to take

her at her word or mention that her husband has brought it up. We don’t know the real truth here: whether it bothers them both more than they’re letting on, whether it bothers just him or whether his sense of humor is a little skewed and he hasn’t thought about it since. Regardless, at least you’ll know that you tried your best.

You don’t know whether it’s a few coincidental bad moods or something more serious. But it’s a conversation that deserves privacy. Best case scenario, you squeeze in an inquisition while you’re loading the dishwasher — and what’s the point? He might be rushed or defensive, and if there are problems with his partner he won’t want to discuss them then anyway. Give it another visit. Be warm and let him know that you love seeing him. And then call again. Not enough to make him block your number, but enough to let him know that you’re thinking of him. Frame your inquiries as an observation — he hasn’t seemed like himself — and that you want to be available to him in whatever way he needs.

At Synetic Theater’s exercise classes, you’ll play every part When Alex Mills starred as Puck in Synetic Theater’s recent production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the actor didn’t speak any lines from Shakespeare’s comedy. Instead of using words, he told the story with his body, which scurried up ropes and leapt across the ethereal set. “We’re always asked, ‘How do you do that?’ ” says company member Kathryn Elizabeth Kelly. The answer: intense, three-hour fitness and technique classes developed by Synetic founders Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili. Now regular folks can get a taste of Synetic’s rigorous physical training.

Either way, classes begin with intense cardiovascular exercises and then downshift to strength and flexibility training. Instructors borrow from Pilates, kickboxing and dance, but the common ingredient is imagination, says instructor Randy Snight. “If you feel like you are storytelling, your brain focuses on the story you are telling and not how tired and miserable you are,” he says. For instance, at a recent class, as Snight had students relax into a backbend, he told them to imagine they were melting into (the Little Mermaid’s beau) Prince Eric’s arms. “Or whoever,” he amended.

An Olympian explains why folks should train with her in Arlington After two decades of training as an Olympic weightlifter — and racking up records and earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team in 2000 along the way — Cara Heads Slaughter can pick up just about anything. For her next feat, the 36-yearold is working to raise the profile of her sport as a coach. To do that, she relocated from California to the D.C. area, lured by the booming Cross-

Fit scene. Through her company CH Fitness & Performance (607 S. Ball St., Arlington; 310-818-3671, chfitnessandperformance.com), she offers one-on-one and group training, as well as special clinics. Her classes consistently fill up, and her $225 two-day camp cohosted by fellow Olympian Cheryl Haworth this weekend is nearly sold out. Still, Slaughter wants to reach the potential students out there who are intimidated by the idea of learning to lift. “I’ve trained for three Olympic trials. There’s a place for intensity.

Strong Argument for Weights

Olympian Cara Heads Slaughter now teaches other athletes how to lift.

But learning the technique early in your career is not the place for that,” Slaughter says. “I want to make Olympic lifting accessible and fun.” Hoisting hefty plates isn’t drudgery when you’re focused on all of the tiny details that go into each movement, says Slaughter, who takes a brainy approach to coaching. (She also has a master’s degree in sociology.) Those pointers help distract from the fact that you’re getting a full-body workout in a short period of time. “Toning and firming — those

words drive me crazy,” Slaughter says. With Olympic weightlifting, the goal is to build explosive power and athleticism, and that translates into improved coordination, balance, flexibility and strength. Although her students eventually learn how to raise the bar, Slaughter starts without weights. Whether they’re clean slates or seasoned athletes, many need to readjust the way they squat so that they have a stable base. Then she explains how to keep tension in the back and abs to avoid injury. “They say, ‘This is tiring.’ I say, ‘Exactly,’ ” Slaughter adds. But if you follow Slaughter’s advice, you’ll be ready for liftoff. VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America Helps Children Find Strength Only 5-years-old, Jorge leads his three brothers toward the gates of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Together, they will spend a day as Marines. Jorge was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eye. Make-A-Wish® offered Jorge the chance to wish for anything, and he wished to be a Marine for a day. The military is just “in his blood” his mother, Carmen, said. Today’s experience will help him find strength to overcome the hardships of his medical condition. An Oath to Defend Jorge’s wish begins with a rite of passage as old as the Marine Corps itself. Brigadier General Vincent A. Coglianese, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations -West, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, swears him in. By reciting the Oath of Enlistment, he becomes part of the Marine Corps family — past, present and future. The general and his staff have a surprise

for Jorge: He’s not just a Marine today … he’s a general. He’s hesitant with his new authority at first. But Gen. Coglianese soon has him issuing orders, taking charge, and inspiring his subordinates. Gen. Coglianese is ready to dismiss Jorge to meet other Marines, “I have just one order for you, Jorge: Have a good time!”

guy, full of life and energy,” said Sgt. Daniel Mullis, a formal marksmanship training course instructor. Jorge’s visit is a reminder to the Marines at Camp Pendleton that they do more than defend a nation: They are a force of hope and a source of transformative power that helps kids like Jorge find the will to overcome the challenges in their lives.

Living the Marine Life It’s time for Jorge to find out how Marines develop the skills needed to defend their country. He rides in assault vehicles. He takes a Marine Corps boxing lesson and flies a helicopter simulator. Everywhere he goes, Marine Corps personnel take extra steps to make Jorge’s day unforgettable. He receives challenge coins, stickers, patches and other memorabilia. Inspiring His Heroes Jorge’s presence adds something special to the everyday duties of the Marines at Camp Pendleton. “He’s just a brave little

Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Wishes help kids feel better — and sometimes when they feel better, they get better. Kids say wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illness. With each new adventure on his wish, Jorge stands taller and smiles wider. Each year, around 27,000 kids are diagnosed with a qualifying condition. Last year, we granted nearly 14,000 wishes. Our vision is to someday grant the wish of every eligible child, every year. We believe that kids battling the odds can benefit mentally, emotionally, and physically from

SECRET PROJECTS

Curtain May Rise on a Seinfeld Broadway Play Less than a week after Jerry Seinfeld mentioned a “big, huge, gigantic” project, his “Seinfeld” co-creator, Larry David, revealed the two were working on a play. David didn’t reveal details, but told Showbiz411 on Saturday the two were “talking about” Seinfeld starring in a production David had written for Broadway. (E XPRESS) TELEVISION

‘The Newsroom’ to End After Its Third Season HBO President Michael Lombardo said in a statement Monday that “The Newsroom” will begin production this spring on its third and final season. The Aaron Sorkinhelmed drama will debut its final episodes this fall. HBO had previously announced that “Boardwalk Empire” and “True Blood” would also end in 2014. (EXPRESS)

“I’m looking forward to rocking the stage with my Bro Ski and to all the fans — stank you smelly much, this is for y’all!” — BIG BOI (ANTWAN PATTON, LEFT ), IN A STATEMENT MONDAY WITH OUTKAST PARTNER ANDRE “3000” BENJAMIN, RIGHT, ANNOUNCED THAT THE HIP-HOP DUO’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY COMEBACK IS BEING EXTENDED TO MORE THAN 40 FESTIVAL DATES IN 2014.

A ‘Liar’ With a Secret Sasha Pieterse’s character arc on ‘Pretty Little Liars’ is a big surprise for fans

RON TOM (ABC FAMILY)

In Brief

TV “Pretty Little Liars” has hooked viewers with the twists and turns of four friends who are repeatedly tormented and tricked in their fictional town after their queenbee best friend Alison DiLaurentis is murdered. That’s why many fans of the ABC Family drama were shocked in the show’s annual Halloween episode, when it was revealed (spoiler alert!) that Alison was alive and had been in hiding this whole time.

Tonight’s Episode 8 p.m. ABC Family Spencer (Troian Bellisario, above left), Emily, Aria (Lucy Hale, above center) and Hanna (Ashley Benson, above right) hope to find some answers in Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse) diary. That’s easier said than done, however, as all the entries are in code, so it’s not clear which stories are about whom. Spencer becomes suspicious of her father’s recent interaction with Mrs. DiLaurentis. (TRIBUNE MEDIA)

“To know that Alison was alive and didn’t do anything … they’re going to have to deal with that.” The series resumed its fourth season last week, and actress Sasha Pieterse, who plays Alison, says even though “the girls find a little bit of satisfaction” in new episodes, it isn’t all roses in Rosewood, Pa. “There’s so much that they’ve been through, and to know that Alison was alive and didn’t do anything when certain things happen to them, I think that they’re going to have to deal with that because that’s painful, too. I think they’re happy that she’s alive, and probably pissed off,” Pieterse said with a laugh in a recent interview. Now that we know Alison is alive, Pieterse will play a more prominent role.

Sasha Pieterse lives on as Alison in ABC’s “Pretty Little Liars.”

Pieterse says the big questions now are, “Where has she been hiding, and who has she been hiding from?” The 17-year-old South Africanborn actress is thrilled to be part of such a popular series. “TV is so fickle. We get 24 episodes a season. That doesn’t happen as often anymore. It’s a great blessing to be working nine months out of the year.” Pieterse says she auditioned to play the character of Hanna (which went to Ashley Benson) and filmed the show’s pilot when she was 12. The show is also popular internationally, with fans in the United Kingdom, Brazil, France and the Philippines. For fans who can’t wait to see how the series unfolds, Pieterse suggests watching old episodes. “If you go back and watch again, you’ll pick up little pieces,” she said. “There are things to find.” ALICIA R ANCILIO (AP)

She’s Got Crosswords Puzzled Out Crossword builder Bernice Gordon celebrates 100 years What’s a nine-letter word for a significant event? Try MILESTONE. Longtime crossword constructor Bernice Gordon is marking two big ones: She turned 100 on Saturday, and The New York Times will publish another one of her puzzles on Wednesday — making her the first centenarian to have a grid printed in the newspaper. “They make my life,” Gordon said. “I couldn’t live without them.” Gordon has created crosswords for decades for the Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and others, including puzzle syndicates and brain-teaser books from Dell and Simon & Schuster. She still constructs a new grid every day. Gordon is credited with pioneering the “rebus” puzzle, which requires solvers to occasionally fill in symbols instead of letters. Her first rebus in the Times used an ampersand to represent the letters AND, so an answer like SANDWICH ISLANDS was entered as

Crossword constructor Bernice Gordon, who turned 100 Saturday, has been writing puzzles for The New York Times since the 1950s and still writes a puzzle every day.

‘If you spend as much money on cookbooks as you do on dictionaries, your family would be much better off,’ Gordon recalls her mother saying. S&WICH ISL&S. Though now considered standard fare, such a trick was unheard of when it first appeared decades ago. Letters poured into the thencrossword editor at the Times, Margaret Farrar, who forwarded some

to Gordon. “She got hundreds of letters, some screaming that they never saw anything worse and it was cheating,” Gordon said. “And the others (said) how wonderful it was. It was an innovation.”

Gordon was born in Philadelphia on Jan. 11, 1914 (less than a month after the first “word-cross” puzzle appeared). A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, she raised three children before working as an artist and traveling around the world. She began creating puzzles in her 30s because she liked the challenge and it offered some extra money. Farrar was not impressed with her first few attempts, and neither was Gordon’s mother. “My child if you spend as much money on cookbooks as you do on dictionaries, your family would be better off,” Gordon recalled her mother saying. Records are a bit sketchy — the Times didn’t give constructors bylines until the 1990s — but it seems her first crossword was published in the early 1950s. Since then, the paper has printed more than 140 of her clever grids. Dozens of well-wishers attended Gordon’s birthday party in Philadelphia on Sunday. “Already the wheels are turning,” Gordon’s son Jim Lanard said. “What are eight definitions that rhyme with ‘birthday’?” Surely Gordon has that puzzled out by now. “Still the worst TV show ever created.” — @PHIL_MATTINGLY, BloombergTV’s White House correspondent, reacts to a New York Times article on Monday about a recent study that shows the MTV show “16 and Pregnant” and its spinoff “Teen Mom” may have prevented more than 20,000 births to teenage mothers in 2010, or by roughly 6 percent. What do you think of the show and the statistics? Let us know by tweeting @WaPoExpress.

“Is it weird to say that you like the Backstreet Boys for their music? Because I do. At their concert that night, I remember songs I had forgotten existed. I do not scream — I think I’ve grown out of it — but I sing and dance and smile.” — TORIE BOSCH AT BUZZFEED.COM

recounts her experience of watching ’90s boy band the Backstreet Boys perform on a Backstreet Boysthemed cruise. The three-day cruise, which happened in October, featured all five Backstreet Boys and attracted more than 2,000 fans from all over the world. In other news, the Backstreet Boys still have fans!

“What is my next step towards finding my ideal job? Telling my professor I don’t want to be like him…” — THE BLOGGER AT DEMYTHIFY.COM

derides an outdated attitude in the world of academia — that becoming a research professor should be the goal of every science Ph.D. student. The blogger thinks that is unrealistic, considering the current job market.

“Not exactly ‘sneaky,’ but I typed up a will for a guy who left $100k to his secretary. Don’t imagine his wife will be too thrilled to discover that little clause.” — REDDITOR OCEANMYST AT REDDIT.COM responds to an

“Scientist claims that your cat thinks you’re an overgrown, clumsy idiot of a cat” — SCOTT KAUFMAN AT RAWSTORY.COM

lays out the basics in the title of his article about new research into cat behavior. A British biologist — who has studied cat behavior for 30 years! — says house cats believe their owners are the same species as them, just larger, and not as talented. Makes sense. When’s the last time you caught a rodent with your bare paws, er, hands?
