What you will find in the pages of Everything Home Magazine is a collection of inspired articles written by real, honest, down-to-earth people! indsey and Jordan Barkel have taken a typical ranch style home and have transformed it into anything but ordinary. Lindsey, an interior designer, and Jordan, a master carpenter, make the perfect team. Together they are White Pine Design. More than 10 years ago, Lindsey and Jordan purchased a home with zero character.

Making the home into their beautiful dream home required extensive work. It also required them get creative... and dirty! The list of changes is long, but includes removing walls, floors, cabinets, and ugly pink tile. Their renovation also required them to do a lot of work to the flooring. They accomplished all this while having three kids and a dog in the house!
After extensive demo, Lindsey and Jordan hung planks on the walls, ceilings, and down the staircase. They also added concrete countertops, built-in bookcases, and shower tile surrounds. In addition, they added 900 square feet of living space by finishing out their basement. The new basement addition is where their favorite room is located: the craft room.
Built-ins are a great way to keep clutter contained neatly!
This magical room is located off their family room and the door into the space is actually a secret bookcase door. How fun is that?! According to Lindsey “The room was just cement and cobwebs before we got our hands on it. Our love of Nordic and industrial design, and clean lines was our inspiration for this room. We knew we wanted this room to be white and bright.�
Lady luck was on their side when they found the lower cabinets at a local nonprofit, home improvement donation center. They were able to use them in a way that worked with Jordan’s custom built upper cabinets. They wanted open shelving, but also some cabinets with doors and drawers to conceal craft supplies. Great way to display your children's artwork! According to Lindsey, “the planked wall is unique because it is constructed of our leftover scrap wood that wasn’t being used. Don’t always assume that scraps don’t have any potential left!” They wanted the planks to be random in between each stud and they layered the boards behind the studs for an unexpected look. A main steel support column that couldn't be moved is in the middle of the room. Jordan wrapped the column and the beam above and now they add so much to the room... bringing the eye up to the lines of the open subfloor ceiling!
Good lighting in a craft space is a must, so extra recessed lighting was added above the crafting surfaces. Under cabinet lighting was added for the countertop surface. Strategically placed outlets were added as well. You can never have too many outlets! Since the basement has low ceilings, they decided to just paint them rather than covering up the beams and pipes and losing height. This is a great idea for low basement ceilings. Jordan and Lindsey Barkel have been creating fresh spaces since getting married ten years ago. They have four children, a brick ranch home, and Jesus... everything they could ever have hoped for! When I saw my friend Kari show her amazing wood clock tutorial on TV, I knew I needed to convince her to write up a “how-to” for our readers as well. This clock is so versatile, and can be painted any color, to match any part of your home. There are more tools used in this DIY than others I’ve written about, but I have faith that every one of you is capable of using them with ease. Supplies Needed • • • • • • • • • •
7- 1x4 cedar boards cut at 30” long • Yarn 2- 1x2 cut at 30" long • Fabric measuring tape Hammer • Picture hangers 1 1/4" finishing nails • Clock kit (approx.12") Paint brush, small foam roller, • Jigsaw foam craft brush • Router Wood glue • Vinyl numbers Painter’s tape Sandpaper Homemade compass: (find directions for this simple tool online)

Step one: Place 1x2's on a flat surface, about 12� apart. Place cedar boards on top, perpendicular to these in a plank-like fashion, all the way across. Make sure the bottom boards are centered to where the edge of the clock is. This is important in making your opening for the clock mechanism later. Step two: Use wood glue under the cedar boards and nail them to the 1x2s. Do this all the way across.
Step three: Find the center of the boards. This is in the middle of the fourth board. Using the pointy end of your compass, press into the wood, making an indentation. With a pencil in the other end of the compass, go around the board, drawing a circle. Step four: Use a jigsaw to cut out the circle. Sand off the rough edges. Drill a hole in the direct center, using a bit that is big enough for the end of your clock hands to fit through.

Step five: Paint any color you like. Be sure to paint the sides. Once it has dried, distress to your liking with sand paper (optional).
Step six: Measure out where the numbers will go. Cut long pieces of yarn. Use the center of the hole as your guide for where it needs to be placed. Place the yarn down in the 12 and 6 position first, going across the direct center of the hole. Use tape on the sides to hold it in place. Next, place the yarn across the 3 and 9 position. Repeat until you have yarn for all numbers on the clock. Use the fabric measuring tape to help you check your measurements on the outside of the circle. Remember, the center of the hole is your friend in figuring this out.
Step seven: Attach numerals. You want to use it as a stencil, not a sticker, so remove the centers. Figure out how far from the edge you want your numbers. Use a pencil to mark, then take the yarn off the edge to place it. Replace the yarn after putting the vinyl down, for the opposite side. Go around the clock until all vinyl is in place, then remove yarn. Using very little paint, dab inside your stencil, careful to not let it bleed underneath. Peel off the vinyl, let paint dry completely, then finish with a clear top coat.
Step eight: On back, draw the shape of your mechanism with a marker. Measure how deep you want the router to go, and trace along the marker. It is better to start out shallow, then go deeper if you need to a second time. Do not go through the whole clock. Assemble the mechanism according to package instructions. Screw hangers on the back sides, and your clock is ready to be hung!
If you want to make the 48� clock (shown in the navy color), use more boards and make a bigger compass. The only addition would be another 1x2 on the back and on each side for additional support. Also, you will need to order bigger hands. Good Luck!

Kristy chatted with me recently in a candid interview about her super successful sign shop, her family life, and her long term goal to change the world one sign at a time.
the month Q: What was your main inspiration to begin a small business and when did you first start? A: I have always loved any kind of DIY and crafting. I have instilled the love of crafting in my daughters as they always make gifts for friends instead of purchase them. I have been making signs for friends and family for years. Q: Do you have another job besides running your store? A: This is my 25th year teaching. I am currently a fulltime 7th grade resource specialist at a middle school.

A: I live in Springfield, Oregon with my son, Kasen who is a senior in high school and daughter, Gracee who is 4th grade. My daughter, Kelsey is a junior at University of Oregon. She continues to work for me one or two days a week and is starting her own line of signs. This is definitely a family run business. Kasen still cuts, sands and paints. Gracee gets them ready to ship adding our business sticker and card. Each and every sign we sell goes to support our family in one way or another from paying for school clothes, lunches and sports to college textbooks. We are all so truly grateful for our customers and friends we’ve gained along the way. Q: Do you accept custom orders? A: I recently switched to having restock sales in my Etsy store, so we are not always open. I was worried when switching to more of a ready-made sell that no one would buy the signs but I had my first restock sale 2/13 and sold out in under an hour. Fifty signs in forty-eight minutes. It was so overwhelming. I am trying to figure out how to add custom orders back, because they are my absolute favorite. I am constantly collaborating with people to come up with new designs. I’m currently working with Shady Oaks Farm, and In the Farmhouse Kitchen. Anything else about you or your store that you would like us to know? I want customers to know that I want people to LOVE their signs. If for some reason they don’t, I will remake them until they do. Everyone seems to be making signs these days, I think that is one thing, besides the high quality of our signs, that’s sets us apart from some others.

Decorating with neutrals such as whites, grays, and tans seems to be a very popular trend in home decor these days. In fact, Benjamin Moore even named Simply White as the 2016 Color of the Year. However, there are those rare spaces full of color that are so beautiful you can’t help but stop and take a look. That is what happened to me when I discovered Haneen Matt and her gorgeous home. Haneen is a mother of four with an art degree currently pouring her creative energy into interior design and her home. In college, she studied and had access to one of the top ten art museums in the country. The highlight of her college career was being able to take a trip to Paris with her Art History professor and it truly inspired her. After college but before becoming a mom, Haneen taught graphic design and further developed her art and design skills. For the last twelve years, her creative outlet has been designing and decorating her home. She describes her home as her most fulfilling canvas because it’s a work of art that her and her family actually get to live in. Every room in her home is just a little bit different and unique, however they all have one thing in common - color, lots and lots of color. Haneen’s home office is one of her most favorite spaces. Her children also spend time in the space creating beautiful works of art, doing crafts, or just hanging out. Adding a touch of personality to the room, she displays her children’s artwork and they are perfect for the colorful space.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Haneen about her office space and how she incorporates color into her home. Haneen says she has always been naturally drawn to color. She loves to mix patterns, mix textures, and mix old with new to create a truly eclectic but livable space. “Mixing rustic with glam, modern with vintage - you name it. I just love juxtapositions!” she says. Haneen has a few tips for those of us that may be afraid to add color to our homes or just don’t know where to start. Although there are “design rules” in regards to rooms having a sense of fluidity throughout a home, she believes that each space should have its own personality and its okay for each room to be a little bit different. If you fill a room with what you love and curate it in ways that tell your own story, then somehow it will all come together. Haneen is a strong believer that each home tells a story and you have to create your own story to tell. Loving your home is really the only design rule that matters.

Delicious Fried Donut Warning: The following donuts should be homemade and consumed only once in a while, maybe only once a year… you know, when you have a need for something sinfully delicious, when nothing else will appease that nagging craving… or…if you’re like me, just throw that caution to the wind, and make them whenever your little heart desires! It was a cold and wintry Saturday morning, the kind that makes you want to snuggle in, and fire up your oven. Even the weatherman on TV said that if we didn’t have to go anywhere, we should stay home, and keep our pets indoors where it was warm. They didn’t have to twist my arm. I was staying in. Already forming a plan in my head, I walked into my kitchen, sleeves rolled up, and set the oven to 350 degrees. I had donuts in mind, and because I was sharing a donut recipe with you,
I wanted to bake them to keep with the healthy lifestyle / eating thing from the New Year’s resolution I talked about in the January edition of Everything Home Magazine. You see? This is why I’m not good with resolutions! Three months into the new year, we’re discussing donuts! Unfortunately, I discovered on that cold and snowy morning, that I don’t like baked donuts. I understand that baking them is the semi-healthier version, but let’s be real, my friends. If you bake a donut, you are technically baking rolls. You know…bread. And filling this little round piece of bread with cream or jelly? Well, it just felt wrong. Now don’t misunderstand. These rolls were delicious with dinner that night. No cream. No jelly. Just butter.

So, I set those rolls aside, and started all over again, but that’s okay… I had nowhere to go that day. I made another batch, but this time I fried them. And then I made another batch! And while I was at it, I threw in a batch of Old Fashioned Sour Cream donuts for good luck, and I’m sharing that recipe here today as well! Honestly, if I’m going to splurge with a donut, then I want a true blue, deep fried, crispy delicious donut.
You know what I’m talking about… when you take that first bite, the crisp exterior gives way to the soft interior that is filled with fluffy cream or fruity jam… and that is exactly what these donuts are. They’re so light and fluffy, so delicious, that the guilt that you think you should be feeling just isn’t there. Trust me, you won’t feel an ounce of guilt as you enjoy bite after cream or jelly filled bite. They’re honestly worth that cakey bender you’re about to partake. My motto for the day: Enjoy that donut today, and eat a carrot tomorrow! Have a lovely March, my friends!

Navy blue walls are known for creating an elegant ambiance while channeling a restful state of mind. “We painted the master bedroom a very dark navy to create a sultry, romantic and moody atmosphere.” The beauty in this shade is the inconspicuous ability to bring attention to traditional furnishings while holding onto its presence. “I love restoring old furniture and modernizing it with a fresh coat of paint and hardware.” While a daring color such as navy blue has a sleek appearance, it would seem dull were it not for Yuni’s abundance in textures. Its capability to highlight a variety of fabrics makes it a substantial advantage over a neutral tone.

“We painted our dark kitchen cabinets last year and chose a light, bright gray that has a blue undertone. The island was painted a darker gray/blue color. This has been such dramatic transformation to our house and our favorite DIY. It really brightened and opened up our space.” Utilizing two hues in your kitchen cabinetry will add visual depth and contrast. While Yuni’s lighter cabinets convey a sense of expansion, her darker island establishes grounding. Similarly, having one piece be a different color from the rest will create a focal point without taking away vibrance from either.

You no longer have to fly across the world to catch sentiments from the Far East. Adding Asian inspired pieces brings the worldly feel to you. Chinoiserie accents can be incorporated into traditional and modern spaces alike. The various sculptural shapes and details add exotic flair. Chinoiserie is known for its variety in color, allowing it to stand out wherever it is displayed.
Blue & white accessories “pop” in any room! Just for girls, you say? We beg to differ. Yuni’s use of pink in her office is brass and nothing of sophisticated. An otherwise neutral room shines with liveliness and energy. Consider using pink on accent walls or entryways for that unexpected pop of color. “It’s so vibrant and it makes me so happy when I work in there.” The benefit in utilizing accent pieces, such as rugs is the ability to make a statement without making it a permanent commitment. If you’re hesitant about taking a big lead, consider small accessories as alternatives. “I love pops of pink to create some contrast with the dark walls.” Pink flowers are a decorative tool which should not be overlooked. More than bringing a sense of freshness, they are the ultimate ‘pick me up’.
Gold has established itself and plans to stick around. “I love a natural rustic style but enjoy mixing it with gold accents”. Though some may consider it pretentious, adding gold always elevated the ‘wow’ factor. Consider accent pieces such as mirrors, pillows and chandeliers for that extra sense of glamour. olonial Architecture in decor is some of my very favorite! My friend, Leah, is the master of this beautiful style! There is just something about the simple lines and quality workmanship that makes my heart go “pitter patter”. Come on in as I take you on a tour of some of her beautiful Early American details.

Leah and her precious family live in the North East. Her home, with its white walls and large windows, is the perfect backdrop to show off her beautiful antique treasures! I’ve asked Leah to share some of her very favorite finds with us and all I can say is “wow!”. Let’s start our tour with Leah’s entryway. My mouth just drops open at the beauty and simplicity of her style! The traditional lines of the Early American chair take me back in time and her entry is the perfect mix of texture and warmth that invites us in for more. EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | MARCH 2016
In Leah’s living room, the antique oil paintings are the star of the show! I love how she set them casually on her mantle rather than hanging them. This room is filled with such bright light and the wood tones in the furniture bring warmth to the space. The chairs were purchased at the Brimfield Mass Antique show last year which is now on my bucket list of places to visit. The seller believes the chairs were homemade in the early 1900’s.
As we head into Leah’s dining room, we see more beautiful light and warmth. We find a sweet Early American dresser that is believed to be from 1860-70. Leah purchased this at an estate sale, and the lines and character are simply gorgeous. EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | MARCH 2016
White pumpkins and moss set the neutral tone
This is Leah’s kitchen, and I just LOVE the way she incorporates the beautiful old oil painting with the simplicity of the white farmhouse table. The Munsing bowl on the table was purchased at a local antique store and is one her favorite pieces. The antique runner brings some lovely color to the space and feels soft under your feet.
Leah’s home is filled with all kinds of special details. This is an Underwood portable typewriter that belonged to her Great Grandfather. He was a hay broker in upstate NY and negotiated prices between hay salesmen and farmers. I also love the antique door knob on this french door.
This beautiful nautical oil painting was found in the attic of her family’s lake house. This antique folding ladder was a gift from her parents and is from the 1920’s. Detail after beautiful detail in Leah’s home take you on a journey to simpler times and beautiful craftsmanship. ‘The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree’ couldn’t be more true when you are talking about this mother and daughter duo, Shannon and Revyn. They not only make amazing items with things people often discard, but they maintain some of the history along with it.
they look at items and think of ways that they could use them again. And if they don’t find it there, they have been known to keep a stockpile of treasures for just the right project.
One project that displays this perfectly is “I love the marks on old pieces that really their kitchen bar. They wanted a different look so they spent an afternoon going add to the new way I use them. Each scratch or chip in the paint brings a story through that “collection" of stuff to spark some ideas. Another amazing project was this rotary hoe found at a flea market. They bought it only because they liked how it looked. They decided to add that along with a disc plow from Revy’s grandfather and it became this amazing jewelry holder. No more tangled necklaces. But home is not the only place they incorporate their “keeping history alive” ways. They work together in a floral event business. As they work with clients, they like to listen for their stories and use pieces to convey that story. In their business, they have used an old bicycle wheel found in a curbside trash, as the couple loved biking and wanted to incorporate this into their wedding day. It took something the couple loved to do together and became a place to displace pictures of their special day.

Another wedding they did, the bride asked to use old crates she found in her grandpa's barn. The crates were placed on the wall for a 3-D effect. An old wedding topper at an antique shop was added for the vintage feel. When a customer was hosting a party, there was a lot of wall space that needed to be covered. While out hitting the garage sales, there were several embroidery hoops that seemed perfect for the party by adding greenery and succulents for simple decor.

Melaine knew that she didn’t want to do a “theme” she wanted to do something that would take him through high school. His bed and dresser were the starting point and it just took off from there.

Her son picked out his bed, he went with a tufted leather headboard that they found on Craigslist. He didn’t want the room or the bed to be too babyish. Luckily Melaine loved the bed as much as he did, so it was a win win!
Melaine transitioned his bedroom with the rest of the home with the colors she selected. It is pretty neutral and the wall color compliments the other colors they have in their home.
There are a lot of vintage and unique items in his bedroom. My favorite is the basketball hoop that she made from old pieces of wood. She doesn't like things to be too matchy matchy but she does love symmetry. For example, his night tables from World Market match as well as his Restoration Hardware sconces. They help to balance out the vintage eclectic items.
I love to ask where all of his extra "treasures" that kids collect get stored in their bedrooms. Melaine found a spot to put his books that look neatly stored in old locker baskets, as well as footballs and other balls in neat containers.

- I love and appreciate a neutral color palette in a room. Neutral rooms can feel calm, relaxing and harmonious. But nothing excites me more than to see bold use of color in a home! There is a sense of confidence and joy that colorful rooms seem to convey. These rooms are alive and bursting with energy; ready to let the good times roll! Meet Jennifer Griffin; a lifestyle and home decor blogger in Oklahoma. Her blog, named “Dimples and Tangles� is filled with DIY projects, decor ideas and tours of her home. EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM |MARCH 2016
Jennifer doesn't know this, but her blog was the very first decor blog I encountered on the Web. This was before I was even on Instagram! When I started scrolling through her blog I was in awe! I had never seen anyone's home decorated the way she had! Jennifer has created such a beautiful and vibrant home for her and her family. I asked Jennifer to invite us into her dining room to talk about her love of color.
Q: Have you always been attracted to bold colors? A: Yes! Although the color trends have changed through the years (my college dorm room was forest green and burgundy which is probably coming back around!) I've always been drawn to deep, dramatic colors. Q: That is so funny, in my teen years my bedroom was also Burgundy and forest green. Think “grunge meets Ralph Lauren.” Do you have a favorite color? A: Almost all of them, but I tend to gravitate towards Kelly Green in my home right now. And for the record, I definitely consider black and white as well as leopard print to be “official” colors too!
Q: Jennifer, this tablescape is amazing! The color combinations are so vibrant and unexpected but definitely work together. Is there a secret formula that you use when combining colors? A: Thank you! As far as a secret formula, nothing I can articulate. I just trust my eye.
Q: I agree! Leopard print is a neutral in my opinion! And I do love how you use Kelly green throughout your home. Is there a color that you find hard to work with? A: Yellow, specifically painting yellow walls. The few times I've attempted it over the years, the color never turns out quite like I pictured it in my head.
Q: What are the “Do’s & don'ts� of using bold colors in a home? A: I think when using bold color, one still has to incorporate plenty of lighter pieces to balance things out. If you're nervous about adding bold color, it's always smart to start with more neutral big ticket items in your home, and add the color in through accessories.
Q: Good advice! You did that with your table setting, I see. The white milk glass really balances out the colorful accessories. A: Yes. I started collecting milk glass several years ago and have found most of my pieces at thrift stores or garage sales. I am so drawn to milk glass because I could mix and match it with my white everyday dishes and add interest to my table through pattern and color.
Q: Those pink candelabras make such a statement! I love them! A: Aren't they so much fun? One of my dear blogging friends, Pam of Simple Details, came up with a brilliant DIY to get the look for less of a high-end designer candelabra. I followed her instructions and made my own. They were gold for a while, but I painted them glossy hot pink for this table and I'm in love!
Q: I have to say, I'm impressed with your thrifted finds. A: I'm the person who waits for a sale at the thrift store! Sometimes, I just have a feeling when no one else will see the potential in an item. So when I spot something and want it, I might wait for the next markdown cycle. (Thrift store prices often start a little high around here.) That's what I did when I spotted the small glasses on the table... I took my chances and waited until those were 75% off, and snagged a set of 12 for $9! Of course, that strategy doesn't always work. I have missed out a time or two by waiting. But, overall my track record is pretty good. Q: What advice can you give to those that are “color-challenged� but want to incorporate color in their home? A: Start with something small, like a brighter pillow or a throw blanket, or even a vase of flowers. If that's enough color for you, great! If you like what you are seeing after the first small addition, keep adding in more colorful accessories elsewhere. You can add colorful book spines on a shelf, or maybe even a bold colored accent table, garden stool, or ottoman.

It was love at first sight when I came across this adorable project by Dinah at DIY Inspired. Seeing her vintage teacup bird feeders provided all the inspiration I needed to get to work on my own. And requiring only three easy steps and no drilling, these are a cinch to put together! EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | MARCH 2016

What You’ll Need: Teapot or Teacup and Saucer Chain Twine Charms (optional) Pliers Duct Tape Industrial Strength Adhesive Birdseed
“Hunting for old treasures and up-cycling them into something new and useful is a great passion of mine. From the hunt to the bargaining to appreciating the final outcome, trash to treasure projects get me excited!” – Dinah on her passion for repurposing.
Simply place your teacup on its side with the handle facing up and use adhesive to secure the teacup to the saucer. Use pliers to adorn your chain with charms as desired. Once you’ve filled the teacup or teapot with birdseed, you can mount the feeder using twine or your decorated chain.

It’s that simple to achieve this DIY that is both beautiful and functional! And, Dinah insists that her sets have been able to withstand several seasons fully exposed to the elements and show little to no signs of wear and tear!

crafty kids Simple And Creative Crafts For The Littles Did someone hear, dare I say birds? Spring is so close I can feel the warm sun, lightweight jackets, and in my mind I see flowers, so many flowers. There may still be some signs of snow left on the ground that has yet to thaw, but when did that ever stopped us from wishing just a little bit for the next season? I have been feeling that itch more than ever to start getting a bit dirty outside. Since we rent in the city I am left longing for a garden of my own. So, when my feature for this month told me her Kid Craft, my heart skipped a beat, or twelve. This month we are stepping away from the paints, and digging into the dirt.

All of the supplies Rachel used came from Target’s garden section and get this, they were right around $10! Now that’s my kind of steal! Supplies: Herb seeds Soil Garden Markers (or labels to tell them apart) Planter pots (or something to grow them in)
Rachel Bousquet is a beautiful, and oh so talented, mother of two sweet little angels. Her and her hubby just bought a new home in southern California, and they are not afraid to tackle any DIY project thrown their way! She enjoys blogging about how she decorates her home on a budget. Rachel told me that one thing she loves doing with her kids is crafting with them, while teaching them valuable lessons. Now who can’t get on board with that? This Kid Craft isn’t just fun because your kids are able to get down and dirty, but also because it teaches them where some of our food comes from. I call that a winwin! One of her kids’ favorite foods is spaghetti, so she decided to choose herbs that will compliment that dish perfectly. The herbs she and her son planted were: basil, parsley, and oregano.

Step one: use a spoon or measuring cup to pour your soil. Step two: once the soil is in place, plant your seeds. Step three: Add your herb markers to your pots. (Some herbs may have certain instructions for planting, so always follow directions that are directly on the individual packet. This goes for caring for the herbs as well!)
