Drab to Fab with the Spoiled Home Duo Although Sandi had no running experience, she knew that Shalia was her go to girl. After agreeing to train together, the two began training runs at 4:30 a.m. and ran their first marathon together in 2013. We can all appreciate that running is hard work. However as the two became closer, they found a common interest in their love for home decor. So while they worked hard training for runs, their “playtime” consisted of anything and everything related to home decor. EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | JAN 2016
An unbreakable bond, amazing friendship, and lots of laughter, best describe “The Spoiled Home” duo. After meeting nearly ten years ago, Sandi and Shalia are shocked they ever became friends. The two first met when Shalia visited Sandi, who is a hairstylist, for a hair appointment. During their first encounter, Shalia bluntly told Sandi “you better not mess up my hair.” Luckily their relationship did not end after that first appointment, but rather it grew. Appointment after appointment and talk after talk, the two learned that they had similar upbringings, values, and interests. At one appointment, Sandi told Shalia, who was a cross country coach at the time, that she wanted to run a marathon. They assisted each other with painting, redecorating, and redoing furniture pieces. Over the last year, I have gotten to know these two fellow Oklahomans via the world of social media and a fun meet up. I’m thrilled I get to share a couple of my favorite projects that they have completed.

Sandi, a confessed habitual house flipper, had just finished renovating her fourth house when her family decided it was time to move once again. Sandi and her husband found a great deal on a home that needed many updates. After purchasing the home, Sandi and her husband decided on a budget of $7,000 to remodel the kitchen. A mandatory requirement of the kitchen remodel included new granite countertops. If you have ever paid for granite countertops, you know that this would take a big chunk of the $7,000 budget. However, by doing most of the demo and prep work themselves, they were able to save money to spend on other areas of the kitchen. Renovation began by knocking out part of a wall in between the living room and kitchen to open that space up. After the wall was removed, Sandi had to decide what other changes were needed and what parts of the kitchen she could live with. Her husband added additional trim to dress up the cabinets, and moved the stove from the old island to the new location. New propane lines were added they removed a section of the cabinets to get rid of the never ending countertop. They installed a backsplash, new granite and hired a painter to repaint the cabinets. A beautiful new vent hood was also made to create a focal piece in the room. Sandi knew she wanted a new island, but with only $1,000 left in the budget, she knew this would be a challenge. After receiving an estimate, the $3,000 they quoted was way more than the budget would allow. She eventually persuaded her husband to build the island himself, and he did so for less than $400. What an amazing difference lots of hard work and a solid plan can make. They now have a breathtaking kitchen to be proud of!
After Shalia’s father-in-law passed away, her mother-in-law was living alone in a 4,000 plus square foot home. She had been looking for a place close to Shalia and her family to move into, but they struggled to find something she loved. A beautifully built home within 4 miles of her house was finally found. The only problem was that the entire house was painted an ugly orange/yellow. Shalia could see beyond the current wall color and convinced her mother-in-law to buy the home. Other than removing a couple of built in cabinets, paint was all that was used to beautifully transform this room. A fresh coat of white paint on the fireplace immediately lightened the room and gave it a breath of much needed fresh air. Paint on the walls and ceiling finished the transformation. Projects like this one really showcase the power of how paint can transform a room. When you have a house with “good bones” a little painting can go a long way! “A year ago, I was helping Sandi with this fifth home renovation and at the same time I was assisting my mother-in-law in remodeling her new home when Sandi approached me about starting an Instagram page. After ignoring her and even telling her no, she showed up at my house one day and started taking pictures. That’s pretty much how @thespoiledhome began! We take turns posting pics of each of our homes and also share projects we work on together. Instagram is a hobby, and we love the IG community, but at the end of the day, it’s our families, faith, and those same values that connected us as friends in the beginning that are most important to us: We just try to work hard and be nice to people.” - Shalia

There is nothing more refreshing than the start of a new year. I have always been a lover of New Year resolutions and taking the time to reflect on how to make the coming three hundred and sixty-five days simply, better. It is a time to evaluate certain aspects of life and make a conscious attempt to set goals and motivate yourself to achieve them. For me, January is not only a time of self-reflection, but it is also a time to declutter and organize my house! I think there is an absolute correlation between having a clean, organized space, and being happier and less stressed. I know when my house is clean, I have one less thing to worry about. So let’s start by joining one of my favorite DIY bloggers Lauren from Bless’er House, as she shows us how to tackle that messy closet I know we all have!
get to know me Hi y'all! I’m Lauren. Wife, mother, Jesus freak, dog person, Southern gal, coffee addict, DIY fanatic, builder grade house owner, and lover of all things modern cottage. I love rustic industrial designer looks at a thrift store price, and I'm constantly figuring out ways to make it work in our suburban builder grade house. I launched my blog Bless’er House in November 2013 while we were building our first house to document our projects after we moved in. I call my design style modern farmhouse. I like clean lines with lots of rustic vintage pieces and industrial decor thrown in. My favorite thing about being a DIY’er is seeing a vision come to life and being able to step back from a completed project and say to myself, "Wow! I made that!". It's empowering and addicting. A few random facts about me: I sing along to Adele in my car, very loudly and very, very badly, it drives my 3 year-old nuts! I dance all over our house. Pirouettes across the kitchen floor are a regular thing for me. This DIY project I am sharing was a major necessity. I was so tired of the disorganization.

5 - 1x2x8 pine furring strips 1 - 3/4" thick primed hardwood plywood board cut into strips at 4'x14" (The size of your strips will vary depending on the width and depth of your closet.) Drywall and stud anchors Power drill and driver 2" wood screws Level Pencil Paint and paint brush
1. Measure and mark where each shelf will go inside of the closet. We decided to space them 14" apart to accommodate for the height of the storage boxes we would be using.
2. We cut the 1x2 strips into 10 lengths at 14" each for the end supports of the shelves.
Then, we placed them on the sides of the closet where we marked, checked them with the level, and used wood screws to anchor them into studs. Since the shelves were 14" deep, we could only hit one stud, so to secure the other end of the end supports, we pre-drilled the wood and used the drywall anchors for extra stability.
3. After the end support 1x2 strips were in place, we ran another 1x2 strip cut to size on
the back wall to connect the ends. We anchored the strips on the back wall into studs with more wood screws.
4. We placed our plywood strips on top of the 1x2 supports, screwed them into the top, and that was it! Super easy (and probably self-explanatory).
5. I painted the walls of the closet after we put up the shelves, but it would be much easier
if you did it beforehand. (Hindsight is always a bummer like that.) I just used some leftover gray paint from another room makeover we did, Benjamin Moore Gray Owl to be exact. I painted the shelves with white after the walls. Raw plywood can soak up a lot of paint if it's not primed, so it took much less time and paint because we used the pre-primed stuff.
I could have caulked the seams and gaps on the underside of the shelves, but since these are in a closet primarily for utility purposes, I didn't care too much about appearances. Totally up to you if you're a caulk and wood filler kind of DIYer for closets. I combined storage boxes I already owned with a few I picked up at Walmart, and I had my craft closet! I'm so excited to finally have a place to store my mound of craft supplies! It's a dream not having to dig through random mixed up boxes and bags to find what I need. It's an amazing breath of fresh air to have a space tidy and orderly, which makes me wonder why I don't organize more often!

Is Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® the first business you have launched? Yes, it is the first and only business I have ever launched. I developed my paint, Chalk Paint®, 25 years ago. At the time, I was based in a little village just outside of Oxford. At first, I was just on my own running workshops from my studio at home and eventually my husband joined me. It grew from there. When did you open? Why at that particular time? I wanted to start a business that allowed me to be flexible as I was a mother with three small boys. This enabled me to initially work from home, which just made logical sense. What ignited the spark in you to start a new business venture? I had done a lot of research about paint making and developed a real interest in it. I didn’t really think of it as a gap in the market, more a case of something that could be done. How did the idea for Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® come about? I was looking to create a water based paint. It had to be a very practical paint and very quick.

What type of education helped you to open/run/manage the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® line/other products? I have a Fine Art degree. I studied art at university for seven years. With this knowledge I decided to make my paint more like an artists' paint box based on basic pigments.
How is Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® different from other chalky finish paint lines? There has never been a paint quite like mine. You can do so much with my paint – you can dilute it with water to create a wash or leave it overnight to thicken for a chippy finish. You can even use it to dye fabric! Can you tell me who your typical customer is? That’s the amazing thing, there really is no typical customer. I suppose there are more women between the ages of 35 to 55. But we also have teenagers, artists, people in their twenties setting up their first home — all using the paint. There really is a great mix of people!
What do you wish you had known before you started? I shouldn’t have always taken advice from others. I know more about my business than anyone else – now I always trust my gut. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur? Your passion has to lead you – it can’t be about making money. You have to be able to take a risk and be flexible. What has been your most satisfying moment in business? as a designer? I am very fortunate to be able to work with so many other creative and interesting people especially the staff I have at my head quarters in Oxford. They are such talented and lovely people. It truly makes me very happy!
Stay the course. Don't let others discourage you. You will always run into nay sayers and doubters. You know the type.. glass half empty. Disregard this negativity.
Do you travel often? If so, where is your favorite place to travel to? It’s always a place where I’ve just been or about to go to. I am really fascinated by other countries and I get so excited when I going to a new destination. I have just visited Poland for the first time – it’s so rich and full of culture. photo corner Monthly Photography Tips And Tricks The rule of thirds is one of the most useful techniques in photography. It’s an important concept to learn, as it can be used in all types of photography. Using this concept will help produce images that are more engaging and better balanced. You may have noticed your camera has an option to show grids. When shown on your display, the grid breaks the horizontal screen into nine squares. The idea is to place your subject in either the top, bottom, left, or right-third of the screen. The middle is the “no no” placement. Initially, a photographer must determine which design principles are important for creating the image.
Rule of Thirds

Eye flow: Elements in the scene that guide the viewer’s eye through the entire frame. Dominant Element: Usually there is one main subject to the image. The subject may be either a single object, or a relationship. Simplicity: Only what is essential to the scene is included in the final image. Balance: It may be symmetric or asymmetric, subtle or obvious.
As with all rules (at least in photography), the rule of thirds doesn't apply in every situation. Experiment and test out different techniques.
-What is Rule of Thirds? The rule of thirds is actually the golden ratio. It's a number that divides a line into roughly 2/3 and 1/3.
-What is a camera grid? A camera grid can be used to quickly guide the composition or line up a subject. Ultimately, the rule of thirds is a guideline, not a hard and fast rule.

This space is perfect for grown-ups, yet careful to consider the darling little ones that often occupy their time there.
There is something for everyone here. A place for parents to rest their weary heads at night. A lofty mattress for little feet and toes to bounce up and down on while giggling through the fun of jumping (in what must feel like a giant bed). Somewhere to sit and look in the mirror while preparing yourself for the day ahead. A haven to start your mornings before the house stirs. This farmhouse bed was the focal point and starting place for this room. The masculine and rustic door was purchased while thrifting and set the tone for whatever else made its way into the space. It was preserved in its natural state except for a general wash/stain to protect it. The white linens, creamy pillows and tasseled throws work with, not against, the strength of the door. The sparkling crystal, reflective mirrors and nightstands smooth the rough textures and the bolstered velvet found in the settee softens the straight lines. When each pair is partnered with its counterpart, they harmoniously work together making a melody of design.

Words and promises of love are present to be seen as they wake and before they lay to sleep. Most importantly, this room is filled with actions of those very words and promises beautifully scripted on the wall.

Ashley has done just that when creating this stunning space and has made this bedroom perfectly right. It is a true inspiration of eclectic style that understands the balance of mixing opposites in a way that is intended and pleasing to the eye.

the month Hi Grace! Tell us a little about yourself and your business name. Hello, I'm Grace from Grace Note Candle Co! I am a stay-at-home mother to my 3 beautiful children, and wife to my husband of 13 years! I began my candle business after a life-long love of fragrance. Coming from a musical background, my business name is inspired by the grace notes you'll often find in music. While not necessary to the melody, grace notes are a musical flair, an embellishment....and that's what candles are to me. An embellishment, that small extra touch that really does personalize your home and makes it you. I love creating memories using scents as well, especially around the holidays. There is just something so special about recalling happy times from the past while making memories for the future, and fragrance is so vital in helping to recall those sweet moments.
What inspired you to start your business? One Christmas, several years ago, my siblings and I were talking about our dreams for the future, our bucket-list if you will, and toward the top of my list was starting a candle business someday. I have always loved fragrance....even when I was little I would carry around my little purse with empty gum wrappers inside it that I called my "smellies", and I would enjoy the sweet fragrance they provided. After laughing and dreaming with my brother and sisters, I decided to make my dream reality, and I started my business the following February. Where are you located? All of our candles are lovingly poured just outside of Dallas, Texas. Do you do custom orders/scents? Yes! I love creating and making custom orders and scents! My very favorite fragrances are the ones that are completely unique to me or my customers.
7 oz. Soy Candle in our My Father's Favorite Scent: A nostalgic blend of kitchen spices, with notes of orange zest, carrot & vanilla.
What can you tell me about your candles? After researching what type of candles I wanted to make I decided to go with Soy. I love that soy wax is a sustainable product, produces hardly any soot when burning and is biodegradable. I scent my candles and wax melts using quality fragrance and essential oils. I really put a lot of time and love into my product, and in turn I am happy with the end results and love all of my happy customers! Making someone's day brighter by offering up a product that brings with it the essence of home really does make me happy. I currently offer soy candles in 3 sizes....our vintage inspired apothecary jar candles ($24), our 7 oz. jar candles ($14.50) and 3.5 oz. jar candles ($7). I also make reed diffusers: 4oz. the month What was your main inspiration to begin a small business and when did you first start? My infatuation with doors began two years ago with a renovation project at our New Jersey home. One evening, my husband and I pretty spontaneously decided to cut a hole in the wall to adjoin our family room and living room and add French doors. As our work progressed, I started to realize that doors are actually very meaningful. They can represent a lot… like opening new paths in life, or welcoming guests to our home. Every door has a story to tell. I wanted to tell this story in pictures, but there was one problem… I didn’t know how to draw. So I bought some books and just jumped in. A few months later, I published my picture ebook about home renovation, The Door That Wasn’t There Before, on Amazon. By then I was hooked on drawing houses— and soon exclusively doors—and Door Before Drawings was born.

Do you have another job besides running your store? I’ve been an advertising copywriter for almost 20 years, but I fantasize about drawing full time. They say, “Don’t quit your daydream,” so I plan on quitting my day job to pursue my daydream!

Do you come up with all the designs yourself? Yes, my drawings are all my own non-literal interpretation of doors. It’s funny… when I first started teaching myself to draw, I felt really intimidated because my lines weren’t perfect. My scale and perspective were way off. My husband would say things like, why is the doorknob as big as the light? I would answer, I don’t know! That’s just how I see it. I soon realized that’s what art is. I try to capture the essence, personality and character of a door, not a picture-perfect copy. Do you accept custom orders? I’m always honored when I receive a custom order, that someone trusts me with drawing the part of their home that is the face to the world. I like to say doors are the thing that brings us home, so I really enjoy capturing that for my clients. I recently drew six doors for a dear client, and she wrote me to say I captured a piece of her family history. I cried over that one! I’m always wowed and humbled when my doors speak to someone. Anything else about you or your store that you would like us to know? If you have an idea for something you want to try, just start and don’t compare yourself to others. I almost didn’t pursue drawing because my doors are so imperfect. It turns out that their imperfections are what people have responded to the most. Who would have thought?

At the beginning of every year, we all make some type of resolution. We promise to clean more, spend less, eat healthier… the list goes on and on. How about making a resolution to put your DIY skills and craftiness to better use? It’s something that not only saves money and keeps us busy, but also gives us a sense of self gratification. Being able to say “I made that” is such a great feeling. I asked one of my very favorite DIY girls to help kick off our New Year with an awesome project tutorial, and she didn’t disappoint! DIY PLACEMAT PILLOW Items needed: Double-sided placemat Cotton/polyester fiber fill Scissors or blade Needle and thread
How to make 1. Choose a favorite double sided placemat. (This one is by Threshold from Target for $4.99.) 2. Give your placemat a little "pinch and pull" to separate the front fabric from the back. 3. Split open the back corner of your placemat, just big enough to get your filling in. 4. STUFF, STUFF, STUFF! Make it as full or light as you please. 5. Using your needle and thread, stitch up the slit you made to keep all your filling in place. 6. Set up your pillows and do a happy dance, because you rocked that DIY!

Organization 2016: A new year always brings a fresh start - it’s the time of the year that we put away the holiday decorations and begin to rethink our previous home decor. For some, it means moving furniture back to the way it was or trying something new. It’s the time of year for resolutions, creating new memories, new habits, or simply starting over. Not only can we make resolutions about losing weight or eating more healthy, but also about keeping our homes organized or becoming a better house keeper. I once heard that an organized person has more time in the day because they aren’t wasting it looking for their keys or that mail they forgot to drop off. Also, that making your bed each morning will start a cleaning pattern for the rest of the day. No home is ever immaculate, but it’s easy to clean a little each day and doesn’t have to be a tedious chore. Brooke Maclaskey admits to being a naturally unorganized person, but she’s found a way to fake it in order to appear that her house is organized and well put together. Her most useful items are baskets - they hide hats, scarves, shoes, and coats in her mudroom entry way. Just off the garage, this area is the drop off zone when coming home from a long day at work or a fun day of shopping. Keeping this space organized is key to saving time and energy.
Baskets also provide much needed storage in the living room for everyday items like remotes, power cords, computers, cameras, books, etc.
The beautiful antique card catalog provides storage for extra magazines, small electronics and whatever else Brooke can fit in those drawers! Empty baskets are great to keep around for picking up items and returning them back to their designated spot.

Here we are already, the New Year. Filled with hope for good health, happiness, prosperity…. And…. New Year’s Resolutions. You know the ones I’m talking about. The ones in which we promise ourselves, and possibly others, that we’re going to be better at whatever it is that we haven’t been very good at all year long.
I don’t know. I’d like to know how you feel about New Year’s Resolutions. I dislike them. Immensely. As with most people, I’d focus my new year’s resolution on my diet. I’d immediately begin with the promise to myself that I’d start my diet on January 1st. And then when that didn’t happen,
I’d start it the following Monday. And then Tuesday. And then the following Monday again. But then by March/April, I’d have to get through Easter. And the summer, filled with all of those cookouts. And then I’d be back to the fall season again, with Thanksgiving and the upcoming holidays... And then I’d start all over again with the New Year. Well, this went on for many, many years, until one day, I decided that the word “diet” was the problem. I didn’t want to diet. I mean, who really wants to diet? I understand it’s a mind over matter thing, and dieting does not Oatmeal mean deprivation… but for me, the minute I’m on a diet…I want to eat anything. And everything!

“Eating healthier” seemed like such an easier thing to do, but the problem was...and with a busy lifestyle, I never had time to prepare a healthy lunch for myself before work in the morning. And that is when I jumped on the Mason Jar Salad train. Mason Jar salads have been around forever. They help to avoid skipping meals and that risk of binge eating later when starvation has taken over, or they help to avoid eating junk food when you haven’t packed a lunch for the day. By creatively layering colorful and delicious fruits and vegetables in a jar, eating healthy has become not only quick and easy, but delicious and beautiful! Thanks to the tight seal of the lid, the salads will keep up to five days in the refrigerator, perfect as a grab and go in the morning, to help you eat healthy lunches during the week, making life so much easier (and healthier!) by preparing your lunches on Sunday! You’ll save time. You’ll save money. And clean-up is a breeze!
Instead of mixing all of the ingredients together, layering the vegetables will keep them dryer, and fresher longer. What you will need: Mason jars of all sizes. They’re readily available in almost all department and grocery stores, and lots of times you’ll find them right in your mom’s or grandma’s cellars. A canning funnel isn’t really necessary, but really helps to guide the food into the jar. You’d be surprised at how much you actually spill outside of even a wide mouth jar! A salad spinner helps to dry the freshly
washed vegetables. The drier the vegetables, the longer they’ll stay fresh and crisp. A rubber spatula will help layer the vegetables, and fits nicely down the sides of the jar to help eliminate air pockets. And finally, a bowl and fork that you can store at work, or wherever it is that you’ll be eating your salads. Plan on preparing a weeks’ worth of salads at once, which will help to save time during the week. Wash, dry, and chop the vegetables. The First Layer: Add a tbsp. of your favorite dressing to the bottom of the jar. The Second Layer: Add crunch vegetables, the ones that will sit in the dressing, but won’t soak it up! Bell Pepper, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Cucumber, Sugar Snap Peas, Radishes, Tomatoes. The Third Layer: The porous vegetables: Asparagus, Avocado, Basil, Beets, Blueberries, Broccoli, Cilantro, Corn, Dill, Eggplant, Mushrooms, Onions, Parsley, Peaches, Peas, Sprouts, Strawberries, and Squash. The Fourth Layer: Pasta, Nuts, Beans, Legumes, Seeds. The Fifth Layer: Cheese. The Final Layer: Leafy greens.
A folded paper towel placed over the top of the jar right before you screw the lid on will help to soak up any moisture that is
left on the greens, keeping them fresher, longer. Jarred meals don’t have to be just for lunch either. You can make yourself a healthy breakfast by adding oatmeal, milk, nuts and dried fruits…or… fresh fruits and yogurt to jars for the whole week too!
Most likely, you’re living a very busy lifestyle, and sometimes that definitely affects what you eat, or how often you eat. If you haven’t already, I think you’ll find these Mason Jar Salads to be a wonderful help to your New Year’s Resolution to living and eating healthier! If I am being honest, there may have been a year or two that the Christmas decorations came down on Christmas Day! After all the extra events, extra eating, extra spending, extra cooking and extra knick knacks ….we all need a little breathing room! The same is true for our homes! As my sweet friend, Alicia, says “you have to let the room talk to you” and my rooms are saying, “we need a break!” I was first drawn into Alicia’s feed on Instagram by her beautiful use of color. The fun pops of red, blue, yellow and green took me to my “happy place”.
Alicia describes her passion for decor like this, “I love making things beautiful, pleasing to the eye. It is my way of bringing happiness into people's lives including my own. I know I can't change the world or sometimes circumstances, but perhaps I can bring a smile to someone's face and make them feel “welcomed” by the space that surrounds them. I can spend all day making things look pretty, either moving furniture around or sanding a piece of furniture for a friend, knowing or perhaps believing that I could make it look a little better by bringing out the beauty of the piece.”

Now that the new year has arrived and the Christmas clutter has moved on out, it is time to find creative and cute ways to get organized. Alicia loves to use antiques and flea market finds to store things in her home. Using pieces with drawers is a great way to store extra dishes, napkins, tablecloths and placemats. I love the way she used a beautiful antique dresser to do just that! It’s a great place for lamps and beautiful accessories and all the while, hiding all her extra stuff. Alicia comes from a large family, 11 kids, and she loves people. Combine her love for people and her love for antiques, and you get a home that is always ready for visitors. Alicia’s favorite things to collect are chairs. She said that growing up in such a large family, they had to take turns sitting at the table for meals. Alicia said that when it comes to her home.
Alicia approaches design like she does people. “I love pieces that have a history, just like people. It's like “unveiling” it's beauty as you work with a piece or unveiling the true person when you talk with a friend. It's the same with any room. Just moving furniture to a different location, making the room talk to you and letting it tell you where it belongs, is similar to connecting with people. People need to talk to other people; they need to know where they belong and what makes them happy.”

CHILD GOD, MARINE WIFE When itOF comes to being organized and using those antique and flea market finds to store items in her home, Alicia is so creative! Instead of storing her valuable pictures in a box somewhere, she stores them under glass on this beautiful, pine table. The white covered books on the coffee table are some of her kids favorite books when they were young! She stored them by covering them with white card stock and displaying them and using them for decor instead of getting rid of them or storing them where they can't be seen. How genius is that?! The boxes under the bench are wine crates she found on Craigslist! She stained them and added handles and now uses them to hold her cute dog, Lilly’s, toys. She also shared that she can use those same crates to hold drinks for outdoor barbecues and she turns them upside down under a tablecloth for height when she entertains and wants her dishes with different heights. So clever! The French painted piece is where she stores ribbons, burlap, and small vases for entertainment. The top functions as a dessert and coffee buffet for her guests. Talk about beautiful storage! I know I have been inspired by Alicia to look at my antiques in a different way! After all, antiques are not just beautiful, they are actually very functional! I hope you have been inspired as well and I hope you enjoyed your small glimpse into Alicia’s wonderful home! I’m sure you would find a beautiful chair and a friendly smile waiting for you there! Her main source for projects is the St. Vincent’s Thrift store and the trash. “Wisconsin still has very few trash restrictions. Once a month they have a bulk pickup where you can throw away thing you want. It’s my favorite time to go “curb shopping”! Jen added that when she talked to Corrine about what she wanted in the space, her only requests were that it would be bright, happy, and playful. Jen wanted the rest of the palette to remain colorful and fun, but not compete with or be obnoxious with the yellow. The navy polka dot rug helped to ground it all and give it depth. I asked Corrine how they keep the room looking so nice and not cluttered with toys. She said that they keep all her daughters toys in a little nook in the hall with her play kitchen and dollhouse. Corrine doesn't like to have toys in her room because she wants her to sleep when it is time to sleep! I love that idea, especially for young kids.

Being prepared to host a dinner party means having the right items in your inventory. Key pieces like white plates and neutral-colored linens are versatile enough for someone to use for every occasion. For her tablescape, Kennesha layered her beautiful white plates over wooden chargers, both from Crate and Barrel. She has used these plates and chargers for many previous occasions and changes the look by switching the napkins and centerpiece.

“I’m very serious about my thrifting”
To create this fresh, clean tablescape, Kennesha gathered inspiration from the natural scenes of her hometown in the Pacific Northwest. “I’ve dubbed this tablescape as Coastal Bohemian” says Kennesha. “It represents peaceful solitude with a bit of an eclectic twist”. For her centerpiece, Kennesha used a piece of driftwood that she already owned and placed air plants around it that she found at her local nursery. “I’m typically inspired by one piece first and everything flows from there” says Kennesha. Kennesha completes her tablescape with beautiful, hand-dyed napkins from the San Francisco based company Vartan Co. Her Amazing silverware was a thrift store find. Kennesha was lucky to find a complete set of 10 for less than $ 20! “Those genes run pretty strong.”

Kennesha understands the basics to dressing a table but doesn't consider herself a rule follower. “The basic rules that I follow are drinks on the right, forks on the left, knives on the right. I tend to follow the if you like the way it looks, do it-rule” says Kennesha.
Although Kennesha has always lived in a home where aesthetics are important, the most important thing to her when hosting or attending a gathering is having fun. “Never neglect the opportunity to bring life not just to the atmosphere in your home but to the people you are welcoming in”.

appy New Year! Around this time I’m usually still basking in the holiday glow of our home. I don’t tend to put too much pressure on myself to set any big resolutions, but with the New Year upon us my mind can’t help but to ponder about some reasonable goals and kick starting my Spring-cleaning. One thing I want to be intentional about this year is to be creative and use some of the items and supplies we’ve collected over the last few years for projects around the house. Our stockpile of cool collected materials has grown exponentially, but we haven’t made time to get creative and use them yet. My goal this year is for that pile of stuff to shrink and our collection of neat upcycled projects to multiply!

I can’t get enough of reclaimed wood, old doors, and especially wooden industrial spools. They come in lots of sizes and many times they can be easily acquired inexpensively from your local hardware store. Sometimes even for free! We’ve collected about ten so far. Courtney Hamby, a blogger and passionate crafter, was the perfect person to consult while brainstorming project ideas for my collection. She’s transformed her very own spool collection into all kinds of fun new projects including a beautiful personalized tray, three different style clocks, and an outdoor table. Courtney was kind enough to chat with us about her projects and her passion for DIY and repurposing on a budget. A girl after our own heart!

Where are your favorite places to thrift and find treasures on a budget? I love shopping at Home Goods, Hobby Lobby, Target, etc. But my favorite and most unique and frugal finds usually come from the thrift store or garage and estate sales.
Any shopping tips for our readers? I think the best tip I can offer is to be patient. Filling a home takes time and you don't want to just go out and buy stuff to fill a house that you’ll end up wanting to replace a year later. Sometimes I go shopping (retail or thrifting) and find several items and sometimes I walk away empty handed, but I'm always happier when I've waited for the right pieces. Another tip is to know when to splurge and when to pass. If any of you follow me, you know that I am extremely frugal when it comes to my home decor. If it is something unique and that will be used year round or year after year (mirrors, wall art, furniture, etc.), it may be worth the splurge. But for the little decor pieces that get moved in and out and around, I will usually wait for a good deal. I switch out my decor often and never feel guilty for putting something away for a while because I usually didn't spend a lot on those items.
What inspires you? There is so much beautiful inspiration out there in Everything Home Magazine, Instagram, Pinterest and other social media sites and it's easy to get caught up in comparing and always wanting more. I think it's important to remember that it's not about how much money you spend or keeping up with the trends. It's about filling your home with things that you and your family love and making it feel like home to you, whether it’s crystals and glass, or galvanized and rusty wood. There is no right or wrong way to make a house a home.

If there’s one thing I love about fashion, it’s having those “go-to” pieces that make getting dressed each day that much easier. No matter what season we’re in, essentials are the equivalent of versatility. When you can mix and match essential items that fit you well, are comfortable, and stylish, along with one or two trendy pieces thrown in there, you feel like a million bucks each day without spending it.
It’s Sweater Weather It seems like you can never have enough sweaters when a chill gets in the air, and this season I’m stocking up on cozy cowl neck and oversized turtleneck sweaters. When they are a longer length, they pair perfectly with your favorite denim jeans (I like to tuck in the front just a bit!) or with thermal leggings. You can add layers easily underneath or over the top (think faux fur coats, quilted vests, or ponchos/capes) for more power in beating the cold too. My favorite sweater is THIS ONE because it’s lightweight and affordable, but keeps the warm in like a charm.
A Cozier Legging Speaking of! When the temperatures drop, it’s time to add a legging with more thermal power to it. Thankfully there are a ton of great options out there these days that are either fleece-lined or faux-fur lined. You may prefer a high-waisted option to wear under those tunics and sweaters, which tend to stay in place better and create a smooth and seamless line. I know I’m not the only one setting goals for a healthier 2016 this January, so in the mean time, high waisted it is! BUT, if you prefer a standard waist, THESE are a great option. Bring on the Boots So many different styles of boots are trending this year and you don’t want to be without some good Winter Boots. They have an amazing ability to change the look of an outfit while still remaining practical and stylish for years to come. This is a fashion item I always recommend investing well in. Nordstrom is my favorite place to shop shoes because of their quality and customer service. High quality boots carry you, literally, for years, so go with one or two styles that you are comfortable with and can be mixed with other leggings and sweaters easily. I’ve been super happy with the Born Helen Boot which also comes in wide calf. Don’t be afraid to try something new - it may quickly become your new favorite!
Accessories Make a Difference Winter accessories make all the difference in keeping the cold out. From gloves to hats and scarves, they are the extra pieces that keep us bundled and warm in the cold weather. I love supporting small businesses and find the cutest items on Etsy when it comes to fashion accessories. I fell in love with the shops Olive & Arrow and Iris Mint. They have the most stylish, cozy knit accessories! When in doubt, my motto for fashion is, “Dress for the Occasion”, whether it’s a fancy party, taking the kids to school, or looking my best because it’s simply Tuesday. Have fun with it! We have officially commenced into the wintery months. They are here to stay for a while, so we should be cordial to them I suppose. These bitter days are tough on everyone. The glisten and gleam of the holidays are behind us. We celebrated through another year, and really, the cold has only just begun..well, if you live up north like me. Having young ones during these months can also be tough, because you find yourself running out of fun activities. While my kids would love

having snowball fights like Buddy the Elf everyday, I can only bundle everyone up so many times. So when my kids saw this month’s kid craft, they were BEGGING me to make them. You will soon see why. I am so honored to have Laurie Scardina for this month's feature! Not only do I consider her a friend, but she was one of the very first IG accounts that I ever followed when starting my journey. She is one of the realest wives, and momma of two that I know. She loves all things
simple and fresh, and thrives at seeing the potential in making old things new again. Many of you probably know this beauty, but the coolest thing that I found out about her was that she used to be a sports writer! Some people can do it all folks. With help from her handy hubby, she created the “Glam Farm house” in hopes to show others that with a lot of hard work, you can have the home of your dreams. Now she may try to tell you she can make a mean cocktail, style
a blanket like nobody’s business, or how to keep your towels their fluffiest, better than crafting, but I beg to differ after seeing these adorable DIY kid craft snowballs. They are perfect for displays, letting your kiddos play with, inexpensive, and easy. I think those are a few of everyone’s favorite things. Laurie says the beauty of this craft is that anyone can do it, and she is absolutely right. Let’s get our workspace (or “zone” as Laurie calls it) prepped for these adorable snowballs.
You will need: • A Bag of Artificial Snow Flakes (Can be found at a variety of stores, even the Dollar Store, but she picked hers up at Target for $1.99) • A Bag of Foam Balls (Any Size, depending on how you want to use or display them after they're completed!) • Mod Podge or Styrofoam Glue (Both will work, however, Laurie chose Mod Podge because she uses that stuff for everything!) • A Small Bowl or Plastic Baggie • A Paintbrush (Any Size, Foam will also work.) • A Tray or Newspaper
Step 1: First, have your little helpers roll up their sleeves and get started with the messy, but FUN part. Cover the entire Styrofoam Ball with Mod Podge. If a paintbrush isn't working, just dump some Mod Podge in a bowl and roll it around until it's entirely covered. Your little ones can dig right in.

Step 2: Put some of the artificial snowflakes in a large Ziploc Baggie, Drop the first Styrofoam Ball in, hand the bag to your kiddos, and have them shake up the bag until the "Snow Ball" is completely covered in snowflakes.
Step 3: You simply repeat those steps with as many snowballs as you wish to make. Allow them to sit and dry in the bag for at least an hour. The only thing you may need to check on, is that the balls are fully covered. Use Your Snowballs however you wish! Laurie displayed them in her favorite wooden dough bowl, but you could easily turn these into ornaments with a safety pin. They would also be cute as garland or inside a lantern to create or compliment a snowy wonderland theme. I kid you not when I say I built my kiddos a teepee and let them have an indoor snowball fight. They loved it! The Glam Farmhouse herself thinks that having kids is so fun, especially around the holidays. “They inspire us to be creative while reaching out of our comfort zones.” She says. It’s okay to keep things simple and fun. After all, isn’t it about spending the time together? Laurie told me that sometimes making a mess is so much fun, and I would have to agree.
