during: 5-7 Two support vehicles and three team cars are all ready to go. We often see riders being handed bottles and gels from the team car in races, this is the other side – door well stocked with enough gels and sachets to get most of us to the moon!

after: 8-10 The helpers who’ve handed out the bags and bottles race to the stage finish to assist the riders as they finish another super-tough day in the mountains. This is the only time you’ll see a pro cyclist drinking ‘fizz pop’ – it’s the quickest way for them to get the minerals and sugars they need on finishing. For the big names and jersey holders there are still podium ceremonies to attend, press conferences and interviews with journalists and fans alike.

Once the bikes are taken from the truck to the cars it’s all hands on decks in the truck to make sure there’s enough food for everyone. As well as the riders there’s the mechanics, soigneurs, assistants and drivers - everyone needs to eat! The rider’s personal stuff goes into Team Issue cases, very swanky.
95 kilometres in, the riders grab lunch whilst riding at full pelt in the bunch. Any missed bags are passed to the car and items handed out individually.

that you’ll actually feel cooler wearing one than going without. Glasses don’t just look cool they protect your peepers from insects and pinging stones, and you can get lenses that suit different light conditions, while padded mitts will reduce the pressure on your hands and save your palms if you ever stack.
A good base layer underneath your jersey makes a whole lot of sense. It’ll shift sweat away from your skin to keep you feeling comfortable and also protect you against road rash should you ever come a cropper around a tight bend.
Last but by no means least, you need some bike-specific shoes that’ll transfer all your power efficiently to the pedals. If you can stretch to carbon soles, go for it – they can’t be beaten for lightweight rigidity.

In Shimano’s world the latest Ultegra groupset shares much of its workings with Dura-Ace, including the Carbon levers and that natty hollow chainring, and the lever technology has now made it down as far as the brand new 105 equipment. Campagnolo now offer their 11-speed setup in four of their groupsets: Super Record, Record, Chorus, and Athena. It’s the same with SRAM: up until now they’ve been been competing at the higher price points but their new Apex groupset brings DoubleTap shifting down to real world price points. If you’re on a budget then Shimano have you covered. Sora and Tiagra equipment performs as well as, if not better than, higher priced groupsets from years gone by.
