Summer is here...

L

ong days and warm temperatures mean one thing - Summer is here! There’s no better season for cycling and to help out here’s our summer catalogue packed full of kit and features to help you get out and make the most of it! Summer is a great time to spend with your family and friends, so to get out with the little ones there are a few pages on family cycling closely followed by some of the key elements to consider for any charity rides you’ve lined up. With longer days and warmer evenings, Summer’s the season to test yourself with a challenge. We’ve enlisted Stephen Bayliss, one of the UK’s leading triathletes to give a unique insight on how to get into this growing sport. Not only that, but we check in with our ‘super sportiver’, James Berresford who has been logging a fair few miles to keep us up to speed on the 2011 sportive season. Remember, it’s our 90th birthday this year, so to celebrate we show off our exclusive F.W. Evans branded Pashley Clubman and give a run down on the Evans expansion from one store in central London to 43 stores nationwide in 2011! There are also all the bikes and kit to get you through the summer. Whether you need some new clothes to ride in or a new bike to fuel your addiction, we’ve got you covered! Enjoy! SUMMER KIT - THERE’S NO NEED TO SWEAT IT...

C

ompared to layering up for winter, getting your summer clothing right is easy – but rather than struggling to keep warm, chances are that you will be trying to keep as cool as possible. The key for summer clothing is the fabric. You need a synthetic fabric that is next to your skin to wick moisture away as quickly as possible so you stay comfortable. This is important all year round but especially in summer when you are likely to sweat more and spend longer periods of time in the saddle. 06 І Summer 2011

As the miles tend to increase in summer, a good pair of cycling shorts is essential. A decent seatpad between you and your saddle will ensure comfort on those long rides. Look for shorts with a more contoured pad – one that has the depth exactly where you need it for comfort, but that isn’t too bulky elsewhere. Another key feature is the fit of the shorts. Using more panels of material sewn together gives a more ergonomic fit that will keep you comfortable whilst in the riding position.

Spring 2011 І 09 Summer 07

When it comes to your top half, an airy summer base layer is a great addition to your wardrobe. These are made from lightweight fabrics, often mesh, that transport sweat from your body and dry out super-fast. A woolen baselayer is another useful addition as wool keeps you cool in summer and warm in the winter. If you have not tried one before, it’s amazing how much more comfortable you feel. Summer jerseys come in a zillion different designs but most are variations on a theme – short sleeved with a midheight collar and three pockets in the lower back. Look for mesh panels for extra breathability or pick one with a zip that opens right down to your midriff – gold medallion optional for that ‘pro’ look. Chances are you won’t need any extra insulation although a windproof gilet and arm warmers might be handy if you ride early in the morning or late in the evening. A lightweight jacket can also be packed down and stashed in your back pocket for when the weather looks likely to take a turn for the worse. Perhaps one of the key elements for summer riding is a ventilated helmet. When riding in the heat it is important to keep airflow to your head to keep cool. Most companies spend a small fortune

ESSENTIAL EY E PROTECTION WITH BAGS OF ST YLE...

C

ycling eyewear isn’t all abo ut posing – although that’s cert ainly a bonus. But there’s , ahem... more to it than meets the eye... First, eyewear can protect you from stones, mud, insects, rain… and any thing else that happens to be flying thro ugh the air. You really don’t want your vision affected when you’re heading downhill at 35mph while tinted lenses will also keep the sun out of your eyes – and that’s just as crucial. It’s worth choosing specs wit h a nosepiece and arms that are adjustable and/or made from a non-slip material so they’ll stay in place, even when you sweat. Glasses without any frame at the bottom edg e of the lenses can provide excellent visibilit y. Many come with interchangeable lenses so you can choose the best ones for the light conditions. The lens colour will affect your visual acuity so it’s importa nt to cho ose the right tint for the conditions you’re riding in. Clear lenses are great for those far too frequent wet and gloomy days, and an amber or yellow tint will improve con trast greatly. If conditions are bright then grey lenses will serve the pur pose by darken ing the light and a pola rised finish will help eliminate dazzle and glare. Some high end glasses com e wit h photochromic lenses which are light sensitive and adapt to the con ditions. These darken according to the amo unt of sunlight so you can enjoy opt ima l visi on wit hout hav ing to switch between lenses.

F. W. Evans opened up sho p in but the cyclery’s expansion 1921 did really begin until the sixties n’t when the business was acquired by Gary Smith. Shortly after launching the ir mail order service, the Evans Cycles website went live in 1999 marking a new era of retail (03). Fulham was unveile d in 2005 (04) alongside two other new stores and Kendal (05) opened the following year as the expansion con tinued. 2007 was marked by the openin g of seven new stores including a sec ond in Manchester at the Chill Factore centre (06). 06

The F.W.Evans 90th Pashley Clubman. A blend of old-fashioned values and modern engineering... and you can own it! Details over...

Summer 2011 І 17

Summer 2011 | Evans Cycles 90th year of retail, the internet. In 1999, the Evans Cycles website was launched, enabling customers from far afield to shop online for bikes, components, parts, accessories and clothing. As business prospered and the popularity of cycling boomed, Evans Cycles opened two more stores in London’s West End and Holborn and, with the growth of mail order and online sales, the business rapidly outgrewits original distribution centre in Leatherhead. In 2001 the head office and distribution centre was relocated to a purpose-built 50,000 square feet unit in Gatwick, Sussex in order to meet and serve this demand. With a large and modern distribution centre in place the company was able to expand more rapidly and opened between two to three stores each year until 2006 when six new Evans Cycles stores were opened with a further eight launched the following year. In 2004 Evans Cycles tested the water with a store location outside of its core ‘heartland’ of the South East of England. Castleford just outside Leeds in Yorkshire saw the first northern Evans store and branches have since opened across the country in Birmingham,

Bristol, Gateshead, Glasgow, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, and York, as well as a further two stores in Leeds including the CyclePoint pilot scheme. In 2008, a majority stake in Evans Cycles was acquired by Active LLP and the expansion of the business continued for the next few years, with the opening of the Guildford store earlier this year marking the 43rd store. In 2011 the company embarked on a huge refurbishment project, setting about overhauling up to ten stores throughout the year to bring them up to date and inline with the new stores at Mortimer Street, Wimbledon, and Guildford. Three new openings are planned for later in the year with sites in Liverpool, Edinburgh and Manchester at the National Cycling Centre all due for improvement. Evans Cycles head office is still located at the Gatwick site which now commands over 125,000 square feet. The Smith family along with Managing Director Mike Rice retain a minority investment within the company. Check out the video of our history: www.evanscycles.com/90years

King of the road

Get out and ride | King of the Downs

We put one lucky sportiver into the saddle for a season of great rides!

A

t the start of the year we announced our ‘Super Sportiver’ competiton winner with Cyclosport.org as James Berresford, a 32-year-old living in South London. As a relative newcomer to cyclo sportives, James was immediately hooked and after a taste of the action at the end of last season decided to sign up for the Alpe d’Huez Etape du tour in July 2011. Previously a triathlete, James initially got into sportives to improve his bike leg but took fancy, in his words, falling pretty hard, with the majority of his conversation and spare time suddenly seeming to revolve around the bike. So, this season James will solely focus on the sportive calendar with a packed events schedule taking him across the UK and onto the continent, supported by both Evans Cycles and Cyclosport.org. We pledged a top of the range road bike and kit for the winner and have provided James with a Jamis Xenith Pro worth £2249.99 as well as the latest helmet, gloves, shoes and pedals. In return James will give regular reviews and useful insight on upcoming events for our blog and website.

“The great thing about organised sportive rides is that you get to explore new areas without spending your whole time planning and navigating the route. The huge variety of scenery and terrain in the UK is part of what makes sportive riding so appealing to me.” “As a newcomer this year I quickly learnt some tough lessons, the major one being pacing. A few of the early rides I went off way too fast and really blew up so I’m certainly getting better. Recovery is another important one, they might do 180km a day back-to-back on the tour but as a training regime it’s unsustainable. Making your hard days hard and taking your recovery days just as that is crucial.” “The main event for me is the L’Etape, so hopefully I’ll continue to progress along the learning curve and be in good stead for then. To be involved in such a challenging event in a venue with so much prestige and history is going to be pretty special!” We wish James the best of luck at the L’Etape and for the rest of this season. Keep up to date with the blog for his latest posts and reviews.

in better shape for the upcoming season of sportives. The bike seems to be handling the mileage okay, especially given some of knocks it has taken on the poor roads. The brakes have got a bit soft and the gear shifting needs some attention, but generally standard maintenance. I took the bike to Pitlochery a few weeks ago and did some of the Etape Caledonia route, including the main climbs. I found when it got really steep I was running out of gears. As a result I’m planning on replacing the rear cassette for one with more teeth to see if that helps... Check out the full review at: http://bit.ly/lqy5iZ

Trek 7.1 FX ‘11 Hybrid Bike £349.99 (EV138650) I have been riding the Trek hybrid for about six weeks now and have clocked up approximately 300 miles. The bike is very comfortable and makes my commute much more enjoyable. Because I was using a full

suspension bike previously I was not fussy about the conditions of the roads I used but now that I feel every bump I have adapted my route slightly to utilise smoother roads. I got extremely excited when I read signs stating that the worst road on my journey was being resurfaced one weekend! It is now a real dream to ride on! The gears still shift smoothly and without issue but I have not presented them with any hard challenges yet. I have not taken the bike on any difficult journeys yet but I have many planned now that summer is finally here... Check out the full review at: http://bit.ly/iLSg79

(EV140913) Being used to an old Giro Riviera, the first thing I noticed when trying the Hex was the wind ruffling my hair! Clearly the 21-vent cooling is significantly better, the forward facing vents scooping the air very effectively. I’ve since made a mental note to buy a helmet cap for the winter! As a test, I wore the Hex on a three-hour cross-country training ride in the Surrey hills. This provided a good mix of long, steep, heat-generating climbs, followed by fast, cooling descents, including some very bumpy sections. The Hex performed well, keeping me cool on the climbs, and staying firmly in position over bumpy, vision-blurring descents... Check our the whole review at: http://bit.ly/khTncw

Fox Clothing Sergeant Shorts (123346) RRP: £69.99 £44.99 I love these shorts! They have well-sized pockets and a glasses wipe. Endura Stingray Glasses Set £35.99 (121014) This glasses set is a must. It can be daunting when looking as there are so many different types out there. I found these and I can’t recommend them highly enough - being able to change lenses to suit the conditions is as much of a bonus as the low price. They are also very light and you forget you’re wearing them... Ytak

pgrading the original equipment on your bike is a great way to shed some weight, increase performance and enhance the appearance. An upgrade can help to make your bike faster and also improve comfort, handling, function and responsiveness. There are a wide variety of parts and components available to suit all types of bikes, so whether you’re a racer looking for outright speed or simply a commuter seeking value and durability, the huge range of options should mean there’s something to suit everyone’s needs and budget. The most popular and effective upgrade is a new set of wheels and high performance tyres with a lower rolling resistance; together helping to save weight and reduce drag. However, if this is a little pricey you could fit a new seatpost, or replace the bars and stem for a lighter finishing kit along with some new bar tape. Replacing gearing components can be costly but will reduce weight and provide more efficient shifting through the gears. Rather than upgrading your whole groupset you may wish to change key parts or simply replace the chain, cassette, and cables, during a routine gear service.

Road | Upgrades In April we ran an upgrades competition for riders who had pre-entered our King of the Downs super sportive, the only condition being that they had to have rode it last year! The winner was Michal Langier and we fitted a full SRAM Force groupset, Ritchey finishing kit and Fulcrum wheels to his Specialized Allez Sport. Last year he completed the 113 miles in 07:43:40 so lets see how he got on this year with an upgrades package worth over £1000 and a total weight saving of nearly 3lbs! “My training had remained consistent since last year, riding 100 miles a week, making sure I get in a longer ride over the weekend. The bike has been pretty reliable since I bought it a couple of years ago but the shifters were starting to show signs of wear and in definite need of an upgrade. I was amazed at the improvements the new parts made and there was a noticeable reduction in weight which made a big difference on the hilly sections. The double-tap SRAM kit took a few rides to get used to but the shifting is refined and rapid, effortlessly and instantly moving through the gears on the sharp climbs and fast descents. The extra comfort thanks to the finishing kit and handlebars came as something of a surprise to be honest, but the lack of niggling aches was greatly appreciated on a long ride like this. The Fulcrum wheels with high performance rubber felt faster rolling, more responsive and noticeably stiffer when riding hard out of the saddle compared to the original wheelset. Unfortunately I suffered two punctures and my friend also had some mechanical problems which slowed us down but the technological advancements were telling in the saddle.” SPECIAL THANKS SRAM, Ritchey and Fulcrum supplied the top of the line kit we fitted to Michal’s bike.

Summer 2011 | Triathlon Something for every level Established in 1987, Quintana Roo is the original tri brand with a comprehensive range catering for all levels and budget utilising the latest technologies.

BeSt For: novice

PRO ATHLETE STEPHEN BAYLISS TALKS TRI... Steven Bayliss is one of the UK’s top triathletes, competing across the globe in some of the worlds most prestigious events. We caught up with him to find out how he got to where he is today and some tips and advice. How long have you been involved in triathlons and how did you get into the sport? I did my first triathlon when I was about 13-years-old. It was organised by my swimming club, Croydon Amphibians at my brother’s school with the bike and run on the playing fields. It was great fun and I was hooked on triathlon from then on. I won the race too, so that made it even more enjoyable! My brother Mark was already doing quite alot of triathlon with his school and I just wanted to do this cool sport just like my big brother was doing. What is the best part of triathlons? The best part of doing triathlon is the challenge of testing yourself over the three disciplines, and for me I love all three sports of swimming, cycling and running. Triathlon gives me the opportunity to train and race at these three great sports.

What advice would you give to someone looking to get involved in triathlon? I would say to enter a local sprint or even super-sprint race and just give it a go. There are so many races around now that you will easily find an event local to you. Choose one with a pool swim for your first race and all you need is a swim costume/trisuit, a bike and your run shoes. Also, joining a local triathlon club is a great way to meet likeminded people and will give you the opportunity to learn more about triathlon and to improve your performances. What is/was your favorite race? My favovite race is the Embrunman Triathlon. It is an iron-distance race in the French Alps all based around the beautiful town of Embrun. The swim starts just before dawn and you have to follow a boat with a big bright light on it, then the bike ride goes up and down many alpine climbs including the Col d’Izord where the summit is at half distance and is the longest and highest climb in the race. The run is based back in Embrun and takes you right through the beautiful old town. The race is usually won in around 10hrs.

Give it a Tri: A brief introduction to triathlon The season is now well underway but it’s not too late to set yourself a challenge and give it a go. There are a variety of distances and most races cater for the full spectrum of athletes; from the seasoned pro to the novice first timer. The most common distances are: • Super Sprint (SS): 400m/10km/2.5km, • Sprint (S): 750m/20km/5km, • Olympic (OD): 1500m/40km/10km. ith mountain biking you don’t just get to see amazing scenery; you’re part of it! Mountain biking allows you to get closer to nature and gives you the chance to get out and explore the great outdoors. If your memories of mountain biking are of heavy clunkers then think again as the new breed is lighter and more agile than their predecessors. Braking has also improved over the years with disc brakes offering reliable and confidence inspiring stopping power in all conditions. Mountain bikes are generally classified as either hardtail or full suspension. Hardtail bikes have front suspension forks while full suspension models have both front and rear shocks, independently working to absorb the bumps at both ends. We have a full range of ladies’ mountain bikes from entry level models to the latest carbon developments, capable of handling all manner of off-road terrains to keep you smiling even when the going gets rough. There are heaps of places to ride in the UK, from exhilarating downhill venues to twisting singletrack or open bridleways, criss-crossing rolling landscapes. So, this summer pack a picnic, fill your hydration pack and head out there to enjoy the best of the British countryside.

ooking for a fun, rewarding family day out? There’s not much that can beat a bike ride. Getting out in the fresh air with the kids is easier than ever: there are ever more dedicated, traffic-lite routes springing up across the UK and many people live within a stone’s throw of some nice quiet lanes for a local jaunt. Older kids can ride their own bikes and there’s a wealth of options for the little ones. A trailer can be handy as most will

take two children, and you can use it to stash away a picnic and some spares, too. Child seats are simple to fit – either to a rack or via a mount on the seatpost – and they make a great deal of sense when it comes to getting toddlers on two wheels. For kids in the middle – who can ride, but would struggle with the distance – why not try a Tag-a-long? They get to feel like they’re riding and you don’t have to worry about them keeping up or wandering off.

If you’re making a day of it then a dedicated centre makes a lot of sense: there’s often food, toilets and bikefettling facilities on site and the routes are generally well-marked and traffic free. Forest trails and converted railways are among the most common locations. If you’re heading out from home then a bit of time spent poring over a map can bag you a pleasant route. Our full range of Ordnance Survey Landranger maps often reveal unknown roads and trails right on your doorstep. Raising money through cycling events is hugely popular; look through the cycling calendars and you’ll see hundreds of rides specifically for charities and most of the major sportives have charit y partners, too. Or you can go at it from the other end – choose your cause and then check out the websites of relevant charities for rides. If you can’t find one supporting your chosen cause, then why not go it alone? Enlist some mates, choose a route, get some sponsors and just go for it. mountain biking is evolving... ...you’ve never had it so good!

T

he days of one mountain bike being very much like another are long gone, and the choices open to you are getting wider every year. With the introduction of suspension and lightweight materials, mountain bikes have evolved over the years to become versatile machines capable of handling all types of terrain. We can now see three main types of mountain bikes available for the modern trail rider: Hardtails, Full suspension and the new breed of 29ers. But how to choose?

Tel: 01293 574900 • www.evanscycles.com

Here is the lowdown on each type to help you to choose the perfect mountain bike for you. Hardtails: The classic mountain bike with front suspension. Hardtails are great for getting into mountain biking or if you want to do a little bit of everything. They are easy to ride and maintain due to being lighter and less complicated than their full suspension counterparts. Hardtails are a great choice if you have a limited budget or are after a bike that can be used for several different purposes. Summer 2011 І 55

Full Suspension: With front and rear suspension these bikes are made for tackling the really rough stuff! If you are looking for longer days in the saddle and are starting to ride some harder trails, then these are for you. Having full suspension makes for a smoother ride, giving you greater capability when it comes to more demanding trails. They come in a variety of travel options so you can choose the amount of suspension based on how aggressive your riding will be. For trail riding 120-150mm is the norm with 150mm plus set aside for the really gnarly stuff! With more suspension comes more maintenance, but this small trade-off for an epic ride is an absolute no-brainer. 56 І Summer 2011

29er: 29ers are popping up more and more around the UK. With both hardtail and full suspension options, 29ers represent the future of mountain biking. The concept is simple, bigger wheels roll over obstacles easier and faster. 29ers are also ideal for taller or bigger riders who find a 26” option that bit too cramped. We’ve already had mail telling us how recent converts are loving this new breed of bike! While all this choice may seem mind-boggling, the advantage is that it’s very likely that somewhere out there is your perfect bike. It’s just a question of identifying it. One great aspects that draws people to mountain biking is that there are no rules: just have fun and explore! Remember, you can test ride any bike at our stores or check out loads of great reviews online at: http://reviews.evanscycles.com

training sessions within our stores, we put on an annual staff show with all our big brands in attendance giving the reps and technical guys the chance to spend time with our employees, keep them up to speed on what’s new and share their views on all things cycling. This year we held the southern leg at Redbridge Cycle Centre in March which coincided with the RideIt! public show and a northern show for stores located above Milton Keynes two weeks later at Cannock Chase. All of our staff made the best of the two days – not only learning from the various brand representives – but also getting the chance to try a huge range

of new bikes and kit for themselves! During the show we caught up with Mindy, a sales assistant at Rathbone Place, whilst he was taking the new Pinnacle Arkose Two out for a spin: “With exception to the weather it’s been a great day with some fantastic kit on show. It’s really good to be able to get out and test the gear that we’re selling so we know how it performs. I’ve rode everything from BMCs and Niners right through to electric Trek bikes! I was impressed with the 2011 Pinnacle range which was unveiled at the show and thought the Arkose was well equipped for both urban and cross riding.”

Gatwick Refurb Located alongside the Evans Cycles offices at Camino Park, Evans Gatwick is Europe’s largest bike shop. Previously divided into two spaces, in April the walls were knocked through to create a large, open plan shop floor. The new layout is light and easy to navigate and there is a fully equipped workshop run by Cytech trained mechanics at the back of the store, right next to the counters, so you can watch the mechanics professionally repairing or preparing your bike. With a huge product range backed up by our vast warehouse and free test rides on all bikes Evans Gatwick is a great store to come and visit! www.evanscycles.com/stores/gatwick

Saturday is for Mud Worshippers... The route involves some challenging terrain and should usually take no more than two hours. Off-road medium route At 25-30 miles this is our most popular route. U TRANSFER4YO How it works

Last August, HMRC (the tax man) implemented new guidelines for the end of scheme transfer of ownership. We have streamlined this process by using Transfer4You to take ownership of the bike away from your company and direct with us. Simply put, after your 12 months’ salary sacrifice ends, your employer can transfer ownership of your bike to Evans Cycles at no cost. The Ride2Work team look after your agreement rather than your employer. Transfer4You enables you to keep on using your bike and not pay anything for up to 60 months. The value of the bike decreases in this time, so at any point up to the end of 60 months you can pay a nominal fee to own the bike. Transfer4You also gives you the flexibility to change your employer once we have taken ownership of the bike after the salary sacrifice. Easier for your employer and greater flexibilty for you, Transfer4You allows greater savings and less hassle!
