Can’t get through the month without . . . Claudia Werner selects the best of what June has to offer

Gastropub is ‘d’ place Bringing Drogheda’s old brewery WM Cairnes to life. The d Hotel’s new gastropub takes its name from the original brewery on site – WM Cairnes & Son established in 1825. Its inside decor reflects much of the 19th century charm of old, with exposed stone walls, floors and wooden shelves. It features a large selection of wines, craft beers and Irish whiskies as well as food from local and artisan food producers. dHotel manager Rory Scott said: ‘WM Cairnes will be a great addition to this end of town and will provide a cosy corner for anyone looking for a break from shopping in the day and a wonderful gourmet day or night.’ That’s the weekend sorted so!

Get walking! Dig out your walking boots and step right up for the second annual Boyne Walking Festival. The event takes place from June 1st - 3rd with day one taking in a guided walk through Drogheda’s historic streets. Day two will be a tour of the famous neolithic tombs at Bru Na Boinne, and day three is a ramble around Mellifont and the Boyne Walk. Prebooking is recommended. Nick

Ahead of their final gigs ever in Croke Park, this month, Drogheda ‘Westlifer’ Grace Weldon meets Nicky Byrne who talks about the farewell tour, life before and after Westlife and football

LIFE BEFORE WESTLIFE Unknown to some Nicky played for Leeds United for two years, signing professionally on his 17th birthday. ‘We had a great Irish bond in Leeds,’ claimed Nicky, who was often pulled in and out of the team. ‘That’s when homesickness began to creep in, but thankfully I came out the other end and I’m able to look back on it fondly.’ When asked of his fondest memories from Leeds United Nicky assured me he was no stranger to fun while living abroad. ‘We went out one night in Leeds when we were 17. We got caught out and they brought us in on the Monday morning and took out all our contracts and threatened to tear them up.’ He described the ‘craic’ that was had when all the team were together, a bond which remained between them even when he had left the club. ‘I went back to Leeds afterwards when Westlife had taken over, I had these very expensive leather trousers on and when I went out training with the team, Gaz (Kelly) put the trousers on and ran onto the pitch and dived across puddles!’ After his Leeds United days Nicky came home and began playing for Irish League teams such as Shelbourne United and Cobh Ramblers. Curious to know how he feels about the League of Ireland today I asked and he commented: ‘I think it’s a hard one to break down, it’s gotten further and further apart from the English football league unfortunately.’ So how did Nicky make the change over from footballer to pop star? ‘When I was at school I thought Take That were cool, I never said that to anybody because I kind of thought “well, you can’t be saying that,”’ he laughed. He described feeling overly patriotic while living in England and found himself ‘latching on to everything Irish’. Boyzone were huge at the time and Nicky admitted his interest grew from there.

10

THE X FACTOR PLATFORM It’s not unknown to the masses of Westlife fans worldwide that the band was put together through the process of audition. They worked hard at building up a reputation, in contrast to artists now who have platforms like the X Factor to hand them a fan base. ‘I’m biased but I completely prefer the way we did it. Nowadays everybody knows everything about that person immediately.’ Taking Frankie Cocozza as the classic example, Nicky said: ‘Overnight he instantly became a star, there’s nothing wrong with that but it’s very hard when you have to cope with that.’ Westlife were put together back in 1998 and spent months in the studio recording music while their identity was unknown. Six months and a small snippet in Smash Hits magazine later and the Westlife era began rising. ‘It happened slowly but it was a great time for pop music back then, now it’s just so quick. We built our fan base up, people grew with us.’ LIFE AFTER WESTLIFE No stranger to the world of TV and radio presenting Nicky previously hosted episodes of 2fm’s Celebrity Sunday and presented the Childline Cheerios concert on two different occasions. He is also presenting the RTE version of the hit TV show, Football’s Next Star which is due to air in the Autumn. The hunger he once had for acting still remains although not as passionately as before. ‘Acting has always been something in my back pocket that I’d like to do but what I don’t want to do at this part of my life is chase a dream.’ Hinting that when June 24th approaches he won’t be disappearing for too long, Nicky added: ‘I’m lucky to have earned a bit of money that I can survive without working for a while, but that goes against the kind of person I am and what I believe in.’

THE

FAREWELL

TOUR After 14 years of Westlife the Farewell Tour in Croke Park is definitely going to be a special one. Collectively the four boys plus their team are working hard to make sure this is the best one yet with Nicky admitting that it won’t be easy. ‘It’s hard to beat the first Croke Park we ever did. People use the word dream very loosely but it was a real dream.’ Not giving away too much about the plans for the live shows he goes on to explain how everything that happens on stage is all generated from their own ideas. ‘When it comes to the live shows you dream of all the things you’d like to happen, you sit with the guys who can make it happen, and ask, how realistic is this?’ During the earlier stages of Westlife they became known for flying over the crowd during their live concerts and a coy Nicky teased that this could be on the cards one last time. ‘I can’t give away too much but I’m sure there could be a flying gag on this tour.’ And if there’s one thing Westlife still are renowned for it’s their mid-live show medleys so I couldn’t help but ask about them too. ‘I wanted to do a medley of all the medleys but that wasn’t really getting a lot of love if I’m honest. We’ll do our best to put something special together.’ While we’re all holding out for a reunion there are no plans for the boys to reunite at any stage down the line. But dry those tears Westlifers, this is not the end for the famous four and especially not for Nicky. ‘Entertainment is all I know, so unless Leeds United wants me back I’ll still be around.’ Westlife will perform in Croke Park for one last time on June 22nd & 23rd

op models Rozanna Purcell and Tiffany Stanley will be leading the field at Bellewstown Races next month. The fashion-forward beauties are set to judge the Essential Drogheda Magazine Ladies’ Day which takes place on Friday, July 6th. But less is more for both girls who say the days of over-the-top fashion at Ladies Day meetings are gone. ‘The Irish weather is always changing so I’ll be looking for someone who dresses appropriately for the weather on the day,’ says Roz. ‘It’s important to also be practical when it comes to choosing your accessories. There’s no point in being OTT for the sake of it, understated chic can bring more to a person’s outfit.’ Tiffany adds: ‘I’ll be looking for someone who has coordinated the whole look overall; if it’s well blended and the

person looks happy and confident then she will get my vote. ‘However, it’s important to dress to suit your figure and don’t over accessorize. Always keep it simple as less is more, and choose colours that compliment your hair colouring and skin tone.’ The crowned winner will enjoy a fabulous week-long Globe Travel Holiday for two people in the beautiful Balearic island of Majorca, with €500 spending money. The runner up will walk away with a €500 voucher for You’re Gorgeous, Duleek and Stamullen, while the third prize consists of a weekend for two in Killarney’s 4* Dromhall Hotel, including 2 night’s B&B plus dinner on one evening in Kayne’s Bistro. The Best Dressed Man on the day will receive a €500 voucher for Chris Curtis Menswear, Dyer Street, Drogheda, while there will be a Scotch Hall voucher for the girl crowned Miss Teen Bellewstown. The three-day racing festival takes place from July 6th-8th with a funfilled line-up planned for each meeting. On Friday night, the Beamish Inter-Pub Challenge Race takes place while on the Saturday evening, a ‘Singles Night’ in conjunction with Buck Mooney’s Hens & Stag Parties will bring the laughs – and lots of good prizes too! Saturday night is also Clubs Night and all local GAA, soccer or rugby clubs are encouraged to get involved. An afternoon Family Day is in store for the final day of racing on Sunday, July 8th. Admission on each day’s racing is only €15 with OAP/students costing €8. Children go free when accompanied by an adult. Bellewstown Belter Package is only €20 (includes admission to Race Day enclosure, a hot roll, a pint of Beamish or a glass of wine, a €5 free bet and a free racecard.) Beauty BIO CONCENTRATE ROSE WATER (125ml) (€28, available from Biofresh Skincare, West St) My skin couldn’t survive without this product as I don’t like to use tap water on my face [it is full of chlorine and can cause aging and other irritants] so at night I finish off my cleansing routine with Bio Rose Water. It gets rid of any irritants on my skin and keeps it clear and smooth. I also use it in the morning to freshen my skin again and a few drops go a long way. It is also anti-inflammatory so it takes down any puffiness around the eye area .The properties of this concentrate are truly miraculous and a must for every woman who wants to keep her skin looking its best!

Anti-Wrinkle Eye Bio Concentrate (35ml) (€33, available from Biofresh Skincare, West St) This serum has literally saved my eyes from aging and is packed with active and potent ingredients for restructuring and deep nutrition which fight off wrinkles. You need to be especially careful what you apply in this delicate zone and, not meaning to sound biased, but this is without doubt one of the best eye serums on the market and it’s 100% natural.

of a BEAUTY JUNKIE Catherine Morgan, Proprietor of Biofresh Skincare on West Street tells us about the products she swears by KARORA INSTANT TAN (125ml) (€14 available from www. karoracosmetics.ie) There’s nothing like a natural looking tan without the damaging effects of the sun, and the Karora instant tan is great for this look. It gives me an instant golden glow and I like the way it fades and smells. Formulated with organic DHA and essential oils of acai berry and argan leave my skin hydrated.

BARE minerals FOUNDATION (€26, available from Tranquillity Health & Beauty Clinic, Drogheda.) I love a natural complexion so this SPF 15 foundation from Bare Minerals is exactly what I need. It looks like a powder but feels like a cream and buffs on like silk to give skin a natural radiance. I feel like I’m not wearing any make-up when I have it on and it’s also without any preservatives or chemicals.

Ask

Q A

I’m going to a wedding soon and I want to wear a one-shoulder dress but I have a tattoo on my shoulder – how do I cover it up with make-up? Susan, Drogheda It’s quite simple, however I would suggest a few practise runs before the day of the wedding! When a tattoo is new it can appear black on the outline however it fades to a deep blue or navy undertones. This is the colour that’s dominant and the colour you need to concentrate on concealing. I will say firstly that it’s only make-up you are using so too much friction if you decide to wear a shawl or jacket may cause it to rub off, likewise if you touch it or brush your arm off something! Ideally, you need full coverage concealers in three different shades. Start off with a rosy colour concealer, patting gently directly on the tattoo (you can use a sponge however I prefer a using a brush). Now use the second concealer, again directly over the tattoo and the name of the game is to keep it ON the tattoo. This concealer should have a yellowy tinge as it will start to neutralise the reddish/ rosy tint of the first concealer. Pat on the concealer as opposed to adding too much pressure and blend. This may cause the first concealer and the second concealer Beauty quick-fixes with then to mix (you don’t want this as you need coverage). A trick to avoid Emma Woods the yellow and rose mix appearing orange is to powder every layer with a powder puff, and then proceed to the next colour. Lastly, you Director @ Avant Garde need a concealer which matches your own skin colour. This is the Make-up Academy & Studio last colour so the important thing is to make it appear as though it Got a beauty dilemma? blends into your skin. You can blend this out slightly with a small Email Emma:info@essentialdrogheda.com brush and then set with your powder puff and a matching powder. Now your one shoulder dress which has been in the wardrobe for the last few weddings can finally make an appearance!

BOTOX EFFECT SERUM (40ml) (€35, available from Biofresh Skincare, West St) Our revolutionary Botox Serum is my anti-aging secret which I frequently use and is a natural alternative to Botox injections. I love the way it absorbs quickly into my skin and gives it moisture and a glow that lasts all day long. It contains the precious Bulgarian rose oil, active peptide ingredients and Argilerine which helps relax the facial muscles and stimulates collagen too and keeps your skin looking young and firm which is every woman’s desire!

MAKE-UP Masterclass Bronze Goddess

N

othing says summer quite like a bronzed, healthy glow. But as you’ll often see, bad bronzer can happen to good people. More than any other make-up product, you need to proceed with great caution when applying bronzer. If too much is applied it’s very hard to salvage, and more often than not, you will have to wash your face and start all over again. The key is to take time, be patient, and build up the colour gradually. Also, avoid bronzers that are overly orangetoned. If you want a strong bronzed look for summer time, I’d suggest applying fake tan the night before. Make sure it’s a face bronzer, as body bronzers can be too harsh and dark for use on the face. If you don’t want to take a chance on fake tan, you could apply a Face and Body Bronzer, or you could even add a small amount to your liquid foundation.

of Choosing your bronzer The

type of foundation you use can determine what type of bronzer you should opt for. If you use mineral, I would not advise using a cream or gel bronzer as they may upset your base. Powder bronzers definitely work best with mineral products. If you’re using liquid foundation, you should be able to use any bronzer permutation. Ideally, every female should have a matte and a shimmery bronzer in their makeup collection, as the matte will be used for shading and contouring, while the shimmery will be used for highlighting. Fuschia’s Brazilian Bronzer, €25 offers these two types of bronzers in one compact.

Contouring If you’re not familiar with the art of contouring, don’t wait until a big night out to try it for the first time. It may take a few attempts to get to grips with the technique. Done right contouring can slim your face, disguise a double chin or a larger nose, and make your face appear altogether more symmetrical. Take a large bronzer brush such as Fuschia’s Deluxe Bronzing Brush, €30 and dust it lightly in a matte bronzer, tapping any excess off the brush. Starting from your temples, move down towards your cheeks, sweeping underneath your cheekbones and then underneath your jaw. Making a fish face while doing this will help you locate the lower parts of your cheekbones. The movement should look like an inward letter 3. Do this three of four times, using a small amount of product to achieve your desired look. Then using your Fuschia Angled Blusher Brush, €19.50, apply shimmery bronzer on the apples of your cheeks extending to the top of your cheekbones. If you wish to make your nose appear smaller, dust a small amount of product on either side of your nose, then apply a shimmery bronzer down the centre of your nose.

In six simple steps the family bathroom is transformed into a space of tranquillity and luxury By Elaine Keogh

he bathroom, not only does it need to be versatile in design but it needs to be aesthetically pleasing on the eye. Both your kitchen and bathroom are the two most commonly used rooms in the home and they are rated highly important in the eyes of auctioneers for rental or selling purposes. So therefore if you are thinking of re-designing your bathroom, all these things should be taken into consideration to get the most out of it. If your budget doesn’t stretch to a complete re-fit, here are some tips to turn your tired and dated bathroom into a freshly designed space of tranquillity.

) Consider the shape and style of your sanitary wear if you are not replacing it. If it’s a traditional style with mouldings it would be advisable to stick to finishes of similar style like vintage mirrors and traditional wallpapers and furniture. Or if it’s a more modern sleek style with clean lines, finishes such as chrome and glass would fit this design better. Sparkle range, Next, Scotch Hall

) Whether your shower is a stand alone or fitted over your bath why not update it to a power shower or one with a large head spray? I would always advise clients to invest in their showers as it will save you money in the long run and it can change your perception of how you look at the bathroom as a place of relaxation.

3

) Keeping tiles neutral where possible and of a decent size can dramatically change the proportion of the room. Larger tiles can give the illusion of a bigger space. Break the monotony of neutral tiles by keeping accent colour tiles for panel effect or using borders of mosaic. The use of mirrors in a bathroom is a must but why not completely cover a wall in Range of bathroom mirror instead of tiles? This completely opens tiles, Fiega Bath & Tile, Newgrange the room up by adding reflections. Business Park

) By simply changing your taps you can transform your bathroom. Buying sparkling new taps will immediately pull your bathroom together. There are a wide and varied range of reasonably priced taps and accessories available on the market, and fittings like heated towel rails, toilet roll holders etc, will complete the luxurious look.

5

) By keeping the costly items neutral and adding colour through your accessories (towels, Set of 3 pictures, e9.99, Argos, Drogheda flowers, pictures, etc) it is Retail Park much easier and more affordable to update when you tire of this. Homes and bathrooms are forever changing styles so therefore you are giving yourself the option to have a new bathroom every year without the hefty cost!

Robert Hall weds Anna Bolotava

Drogheda man Robert Hall wed Russian native Anna Bolotava in a civil ceremony in the Boyne Valley Hotel on January 27th, 2012. The couple first met back in 2008 when Anna was travelling around Ireland. Their big day started off in style with Anna arriving to the hotel in a 1950’s Bentley. Not ones for keeping with tradition, there were no bridesmaids on the day just groomsmen, Robert’s brother-inlaw Ruairi Divilly and friend Alan Pentony. The reception was also held in the Boyne Valley Hotel where the newlyweds were joined by 50 guests, some travelling from St Petersburg, Russia. The stunning bride wore a dress by Dream Boutique in St Petersburg, Russia while her bouquet was beautifully created by Flowers by Susan, Drogheda. The couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Las Vegas and Los Angeles for 10 days. Photos by Tony

Fate brought Gillian and Derrick together a second time – and this time it was for keeps! The pair first met on holidays in Gran Canaria in 2000 which saw a seven-year romance blossom. They parted ways for some time only to re-kindle their relationship again two years ago. The couple married on March 16th, 2012 in Tullyallen Church which was followed by a reception for 150 guests in the Nuremore Hotel and Country Club, Co. Monaghan. The bride wore two dresses on the day – a stunning gown by Maggie Sottero from Beautiful Day Bridal Cottage, Derry and one which was designed by herself and made by her mum, Margaret. The bridesmaids included Gillian’s sister Leona and friends Ciara McBride and Eilish Gallagher. Bestman was Derrick’s brother Kieran, who flew home from Australia for the occasion, while the groomsmen were Noel McCarron and Derek Wogan. Gillian’s threeyear-old son Sean Houston proved to be a very handsome pageboy! The couple honeymooned for four days in Orlando, Florida followed by a sevenday Caribbean cruise. Photos by Matt Dillon

The bride – whose two bridesmaids were daughters Lauren and Kathlyn – wore a stunning gown from The Bridal Studio, Drogheda. The groom’s cousin Ozgur was bestman. Volkswagen Up! 1.0 75bhp High Up! From €11,000 €13,000 as tested

Up for a small car? By Stephen Watson, of

W

ho remembers the Volkswagen Fox? Didn’t think so. Many moons ago the Fox replaced the Lupo as Volkswagen’s offering to those buying a car from the ‘city car’ segment. That’s the segment which is essentially home to the traditionally featureless, stripped bare, shoe boxes which manufacturers have the cheek to call cars. They’re just some of the characteristics which are to blame for you not being able to picture this Fox. Well things have changed a bit since the Fox’s demise, primarily due to the R word which I won’t mention in full, as well as something called the emission of green house gasses. I won’t go into too much detail on those as this is a car review. For reasons mentioned, this segment is expanding what almost feels like daily. Value and economy are what sells in the current climate, and manufacturers are willingly bowing to the people’s demands. The Up! is the latest addition to this segment. In Volkswagen’s model line-up it sits just below the Polo, thus making it the smallest car that they now produce, also the cheapest. This 3.5 metre long fun box is available from just over €11,000. That’s not a lot of money for a car, especially a Volkswagen which will provide more

smiles per euro than any other car I can think of. It’s fitted with a tiny 1 litre petrol engine which sounds more akin to a modified lawn mower than a car, but that’s a good thing. It’s good for 4L/100 km of fuel, and it’s got 75 horses and a 5 speed manual. Not a lot of power you say? On paper it isn’t promising, but that’s more than enough in a car of such small proportions. At speeds well under legal limits, you feel like you’re absolutely flying due to this thing’s dimensions. Unlike most cars of a similar size, it makes no fuss of our lumpy roads and always feels comfortable. The engine, chassis, and gearbox all work perfectly together to create one easy and fun-to-drive, easy-to-park city car. What about the interior? I tested the €13,000 3-door top spec High Up! model, which has heated seats as standard which are super comfortable, as well as some other luxury bells and whistles, such as a detachable Media Player come SatNav come Trip Computer? Name one other car in this segment which offers heated seats and SatNav as an option let alone as standard? All this from €13,000? I don’t know how they do it either.

his year’s Drogheda United squad may be dripping with local talent, but teams of the past who donned the famous Claret and Blue didn’t always have such a homogeneous Irish complexion. The ’70s and ’80s heralded a new age of exotic foreign imports to the League of Ireland. However, as many older patrons of the club can testify, Drogheda’s foreign legion of the period shouldn’t exactly be revered in the annals of club history. Two such notable characters that popped up during this colourful chapter in the club’s history were the Brazilian duo of Pedro de Lima and Wilson de Silva Chagas. Pedro and Wilson arrived on Boyneside in 1972 with all the accompanying hype that would be expected for the introduction of two South American footballing demi-gods. Then manager Mick Meagan had intended to build his Drogs’ dynasty upon his new recruits, but following a thoroughly underwhelming stint at the club (including performances of indescribable ineptness and various instances of indiscipline), the pair were promptly shown the door, and given a handsome redundancy package to boot. Lesson learned? Not even nearly. Having come to the conclusion that bringing unknown quantities from far off distant lands mightn’t necessarily

p o 5 T Fuel Saving Tips! 1

Go slower! Most cars are geared

to suit given speed limits, so by driving 120 on the motorway rather than 125 (which you shouldn’t be doing anyway), you’ll see a noticeable decrease in your fuel usage.

2

Accelerate gently.

Harsh acceleration and breaking uses more fuel than if done gently, you’ll still get there in the end.

Check your tyre pressure! Over time tyres lose pressure (just like a balloon), so make sure you check them and keep them at their recommended psi. Under inflated tyres cause more resistance thus reducing fuel economy.

3

inger Sharon Corr became The Voice of Drogheda when she launched the town’s bid to host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in two years’ time. The Dundalk beauty joined local councillors and business delegates in the d hotel recently where it was announced that Drogheda would do everything in its power to host Ireland’s largest annual music, dance and cultural event in August 2014, attracting up to 300,000 visitors. ‘It would be an honour for Louth to host the Fleadh in two years’ time, as events like this make us proud to part of the community and above all proud to be Irish,’ she said. Meanwhile, Drogheda folk can get a taste of the Fleadh at a free event in the d Hotel on Thursday, June 21st at 7pm. ‘We want you to experience the sights, sounds and excitement of what Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann has to offer,’ says Mayor of Drogheda, Kevin Callan. ‘You’ll hear superb local musicians. You’ll see stunning champion dancers. You might even Sharon Corr and Mayor of Drogheda Kevin Callan learn a few steps yourself!’ with Aoife McEvoy

Brian Browning

.

director of Integral Fitness & Leisure, Drogheda & Bettystown How did you get started with Integral Fitness and Leisure? The opportunity arose when the previous tenant departed and I decided this business was worth an investment! And I just love a challenge. How many employees do you have? Full- or part-time? Since we began in November 2011 we have recruited 10 full-time staff and 15 part-time – a very professional group of people committed to offering the best. Do you have any other businesses? Yes I’m involved in the property business, own Clarkes Bar in Drogheda and will be back in my first pub, Bensons on Trinity Street in the autumn – another great challenge! What is an average workday like for you? Breakfast at 8am and work until the daily load is complete. An average working day is 18 hours. What are the most crucial things you have done to grow Integral this last year? Marketing the brand and doing what it says on the tin, in other words no porkies! The Bettystown gym is not long open - do you have any plans for further expansion? We will upgrade all equipment in 2013 and we plan to be the number one leisure specialist in this area. What three pieces of advice would you offer entrepreneurs starting out today? Believe in yourself; don’t take NO for an answer and do what you say you will do. What’s the worst business advice you’ve ever received? Buy AIB shares! If you were to start another business, what might it be? Watch this space… it’s coming soon! What was your first job and how much did you earn? I worked as a Trainee Manager with Quinnsworth and I took home £25 a week. Who do you most admire in business? The small guy who employs two people, and with a little help from Government could double that to four. Now that would cure the dole queue. How do you balance your business and family/social life? I must admit the family side has suffered a little due to my total commitment to ensure a business succeeds. However I’ve been spending a lot more time with my children now and life’s great! My business is social. What is your No.1 business goal you plan to accomplish over the next year? Drogheda’s No.1 Sports Bar, Trinity Street, Drogheda… Bensons is back!

lives in Bettystown with her husband Mike and son Darragh, aged 10. She set up Cake Couture on West St in August 2010.

What is your background –when did your interest in cake making begin? The story began in 2002 when my son turned one. I had decorated our wedding cake back in 2000 but it didn’t exactly light a spark in me for cake decorating. What I loved about Darragh’s cake was the sense of fun and use of colours. It appealed so I thought I’d try my hand at it. It wasn’t an overnight success… I made a few fairly awful cakes before I started to get good at it! Where did the idea to teach sugarcraft classes come from? I was asked to do a demo, which I resisted for a long time, being naturally shy. I had been learning public speaking at Drogheda Toastmasters but the idea of decorating a cake at the same time as talking to a crowd was pretty scary. Eventually, I did a demo. From that the demand to teach followed. I guess you could say I was dragged into teaching kicking and screaming but I discovered that I love it and have never looked back. Did you ever think that starting a cake decorating business from scratch was a bit too ambitious in this current economic climate? Yes. But I think it’s ambitious in any climate. Droichead Arts Centre Thirty-five year-old Declan O’Rourke was a relative latecomer to the Irish singer-songwriter scene despite having displayed a keen interest in music from an early age. It was his teenage years spent in Australia that should profoundly shape him. His impressive debut album ‘Since Kyabram’ quickly achieved double-platinum status in Ireland back in 2004. Since then, O’Rourke has completed multiple sell-out national and international tours. He has played with the likes of Snow Patrol, Paulo Nutini, Paul Weller, Paul Brady and The Cardigans, among others. Catch him live in the Droichead this month. Tickets €20, www.droichead.com.

Kodakid

aterford indie-rockers Kodakid are a band to be reckoned with. The foursome consists of Kev Power (Vocals), Alex Soikans (Lead Guitar), Johnny ‘Shoebomb’ Duignan (Bass) and Tony Browne (Drums). The band Emmajane Curran incorporates some massive influences within their music from Black Keys, Stone Roses, Led Zeppelin, etc. The last 12 months have been busy for Kodakid as they released two singles and did a tour playing at some of Ireland’s top venues. The guys were also chosen to support The Noisettes at the Great Getaway Festival in Manchester. Their debut single ‘Pray for Some Luck’ was featured in The Apprentice’s Fighting Chance CD last year which was published by The Irish Daily Mail. Check out www.kodakid.com for upcoming gigs and to see their single ‘Shake Skin’, the video of which was directed by IMTV award winning director John Loftus.

The Dubliners 50th Anniversary Tour, June 9th, 8pm, The TLT Concert Hall & Theatre The death of banjo player Barney McKenna, the only surviving founder member of The Dubliners, in April this year is ironic really as 2012 is the band’s 50th anniversary and a big tour was planned to celebrate. Now the show goes on with the ‘new’ Dubliners Eamon Campbell, Sean Cannon, Gerry O’Connor, John Sheahan and Patsy Watchorn. No doubt it will be an emotional night but one to remember at the same time. Tickets are €38/€35, www.thetlt.ie.

The Fitzrovia Radio Hour, June 14th, 8.30pm, Droichead Arts Centre There was a time when the only DJs allowed on the radio were the dinner jackets the BBC’s refined announcers would don before addressing a grateful nation. This is the golden era ‘The Fitzrovia Radio Hour’ harks back to with an affectionate recreation of Forties wireless adventures. The tales of derring-do are inspired by Dick Barton and are untroubled by political correctness, giving the charming troupe plenty of scope to employ hammy foreign accents on the knowing, witty scripts. Tickets €16, www.droichead.com.
