first opened the doors to Dark Valley Tattoo in Drogheda in the summer of 2006. Having moved locations numerous times the studio is now situated on Peter Street (above the Green Man Barbers). The 29-year-old’s crew includes Dr Dave Murphy (body piercer), John O’Sullivan (apprentice tattoo artist) and traveling guest artists such as Boff Konkerz and Mac How many years have you been a tattoo artist? I have been training my whole life for this in terms of drawing and collecting artwork and magazines, graphic novels and especially tattoo magazines. In 2001, I had my first taste of studio life in Holland when I helped out at some studios in Eindhoven, creating flash, preparing stencils, learning hygiene techniques and the general ethics of tattoo studios. When I returned to Ireland I began studying animation at Ballyfermot College and in my spare time I began working with tattoo artists to learn different techniques and practices. Who are your influences? My influences are Bob Tyrell, Paul Booth, Remis, Joe Myler and Boff Konkerz – these guys are the best at what they do and have all developed instantly recognisable styles. What is your favorite piece you own? Some of my most memorable tattoos are on my leg. These were made by my apprentices over the years, they are not perfect as they are their first tattoos. But they are done with passion and dedication, as your first tattoo on human skin can be a nerve-wracking experience! These symbolized my faith in their training and the fact that they’d worked so hard to get to that stage.

A career change at the age of 34 saw

Lorraine McGuffin

leave her role as a PA to become a tattooist. Now four and a half years later she is the proud owner of Zen Tattoo, Peter Street – and is living her dream

What made you want to become a tattoo artist? I was pretty late coming to the industry, in my previous life I worked as an Executive Personal Assistant. I was in a relationship with a tattooist when my job ended and the time seemed right to switch careers. I was always interested in tattooing being a tattoo collector and decided to start my training. I haven’t looked back since and if someone offered me my dream job I’d say thanks, but I already have it! Who are your influences? I don’t gain influence from any one artist in particular. I admire types of work such as Celtic, Polynesian, Samoan and Script work. There are some amazing artists in the world and I study their work in a bid to broaden my horizons and continue to advance my skillset. Tell us about your first tattoo experience? My first tattoo experience was tattooing myself! Not an enjoyable experience but a great learning curve. It helped me understand needle depth, how heavy or light

What is your most memorable tattoo given and why? Definitely my show-winning piece depicting the signatories from the 1916 Rising which I tattooed on a client’s chest. ‘Conventions are good for This won me the ‘Best Portrait Award’ at the Northwest Tattoo networking with other artists Convention in Donegal. and watching and learning Do you think it is important to do different techniques’ as many conventions and shows as possible? Personally, I believe in quality rather than quantity. But conventions are good for networking with other artists, watching and learning different techniques and setting up collaborations and guest artist spots. What advice can you give to someone who is starting out? First off, you start out as an artist who can design and finish artwork to a high standard, Valley we prefer to give good advice and engage in the next stage is spending some time in art classes a full consultation with our clients. Even seemingly to develop a style and a portfolio. If your portfolio simple designs and names need to be prepared has some merit you may be lucky enough to gain carefully in order to have a tattoo that you will be an apprenticeship. Do not ever go the scratcher happy with for the rest of your life. The same goes route by buying cheap-ass equipment on eBay and for piercings also. tattooing out of your bedroom. This kind of thing How important is aftercare? Correct aftercare on kills your reputation before you even start and no a printed page is essential, it is not enough to just shop will ever want to employ you. Not to mention talk someone through such essential information the amount of infections which are spread around when they are tired after their appointment. Any in this way. Tattooing is about hard work, long studio registered with ABMAI (Association of hours and dedication, not the rock star nonsense Body Modification Artists in Ireland)(www.abmai. you see on TV. org) are now adhering to these standards. Correct What would you say to someone who thinks it’s aftercare is as important as the standard of the risky undergoing tattooing or piercing, or has had tattoo or piercing itself, especially given the Irish a bad first experience? It is risky being tattooed climate and the variety of skin types, allergies and or pierced, that’s why people working in most reactions, etc. There’s no point in paying for a high studios are trained. a piece it would be a three quarter Samoan/ Polynesian sleeve done on a guy called Jay. I freehanded quite a bit of it on his skin and it was through doing that tattoo that I thought, right, I’m ready to take on bigger and more intricate pieces. It was quite a proud day when I completed it. Is there a part of the body you won’t tattoo and why? This is something I feel very strongly about. I have clients coming in and asking me to tattoo the side of their necks, etc. It may seem intrusive but I always ask what they work at or what they hope to work at. I don’t believe in giving a tattoo that may hinder the client in their future life so I always give them food for thought. It’s safe to say they can cancel out 80 per cent of the jobs they will apply for. What advice can you give to someone starting out? Build a portfolio of artwork and try to make it tattoo related. Pound the pavement, call into shops and show them your artwork, tell them you will work for the summer to see if you any potential. What is your favorite piece you own? My chest piece, it was done by Barry who works in the shop and its says, ‘Veni Vidi Vici’, which means ‘I Came, I Saw, I Conquered’ – a famous saying by Julius Caesar. What is your most memorable tattoo given and why? Quite a few of the tattoos I’ve done are memorable as I get to know the client and the story behind their tattoo which can sometimes be quite personal. However, if I were to pick

Declan Kierans

Body piercer set up The Pain Factory on Laurence Street 17 years ago. Working alongside tattooist Ted Zeek, he has witnessed many changes in the industry and is constantly striving to raise the standards of his studio in terms of equipment, privacy and comfort. What made you want to become a piercer? I was the accidental tourist really! In my previous business I was doing ear piercings. Body piercing and tattooing were just becoming mainstream in Ireland so it was a natural extension to what I was already doing for a number of years. What training did you have? There are no training schools for tattooing. In most cases it tends to be a family orientated business that is passed down through generations. It has changed somewhat now as there are talented people who have the necessary artistic ability and skills and who have the choice to go to art college and gain their degrees firstly. Unfortunately, the opportunities are not so plentiful in our trade now so it is important to have options. In piercing London was the destination. Schools have become popular and while they might be much more expensive now, they are the correct way to be trained as inhouse training depends on the standards of the trainer which are not always up to scratch. Who is the Pain Factory’s tattoo artist? Ted Zeek. A third generation tattoo artist whose brother and daughter are also tattoo artists and whose late dad was quite a famous tattoo artist in London back in the day. Tell us about your first tattoo experience Ted? Tattooing my dad. Like any son would I was dreading it! What is your most memorable tattoo given and

What would you say to someone who thinks it’s risky undergoing tattooing or piercing, or has had a bad first experience? I’ve had quite a few clients who have gotten work done somewhere else and weren’t happy or didn’t enjoy the experience. One of the most enjoyable parts of my job is completely changing their opinions, experiences and reviving their faith in the tattooing process. It is not risky to get tattooed or pierced if you go to a reputable studio, always ask questions, ask to see portfolios, ask to see sterilization equipment. If the artist is working on someone and the person they are tattooing doesn’t mind, ask can you see what they are doing. Always trust your gut. How important is aftercare? Aftercare is equally as important as the giving of the tattoo in the first place. As tattooists we do our upmost to ensure the tattoo is done professionally, is exactly what the client wants, and is a good end result. We tell you the aftercare and give you aftercare sheets so that you will follow them. Aftercare and good aftercare is the difference between your tattoo looking good in 10 years or not.

MAKE-UP

To ensure that you don’t have to groom and fill in your brows at Electric Picnic, I would advise investing in HD brows, €35. Given that it’s very likely to rain at least once, I’d also recommend getting your eyelashes tinted, that way you won’t have to worry about mascara running.

un though they are, music festivals create all sorts of beauty conundrums. The key with festival make-up is to ensure that it is kept simple because with a lack of mirrors and a lot of prying eyes, you want to have to do as little as possible. Ideally, you should have your tan done beforehand and dark enough that it will last you the full weekend. Given Irish weather and the conditions you’re liable to be subjected to, it’s probably best to avoid instant tan. If you’re thinking of using Sally Hansen or body makeup on your legs for the festival, spray some hair spray over it to secure it. I find it works.

Survival

If you’re happy with your skin’s condition, opt for a tinted moisturiser, such as Fuschia’s Sheer Tint, which contains a high SPF. If you’re planning on wearing a foundation, chose a long-wearing one, preferably with a matte finish so as to stave off any shine throughout the day. To further bolster the staying power of your foundation, dust your T-zone with some loose powder.

In terms of nail polish, I’d be inclined to wear a neutral shade that way should your nails chip over the three days; at least it won’t be too noticeable. But if you are hell-bent on embracing festival fever and want to wear a bright colour, maybe think about getting Shellac, €30, done beforehand.

In terms of hair, I’ve two words: dry shampoo! As the weekend progresses, and the more tired you become, concealer and bronzer will be your best friends. Concealer will hide the damage done, while bronzer will warm up your pallid complexion. Rather than trying to do anything as difficult as contouring, simply apply bronzer to the areas where the sun would naturally hit your face. To save time when I was applying my makeup at a festival, I’d probably prefer to opt for a strong lip rather than a smokey eye. Even for professionals the latter requires loads of tools and time. For the lips, the ideal would be a lip tint rather than a lipstick as they usually come with a brush and are therefore easier to apply. Fuschia’s new lip laquers, which come in six fabulous colours and are priced at €16.50 each, are proving a big hit with customers. People are raving about their punchy colour and staying power. If you do chose to dress up your eyes, make sure you use waterproof products.

Q

I wear glasses every day as I hate wearing contact lenses. I want to make my eyes appear as my best asset when I wear make-up, how can I do this while wearing glasses? Aisling, Bettystown Firstly, the consideration of the lens you wear is very important. If the lens is very magnifying, I would suggest avoiding bright colours. Also if the lens is too magnifying on the eye colour, avoid colours which make the eye colour really stand out. For example, blue eyes stand out if worn with orange, red, rustics and most warm colours. Brown eyes suits most cool tones like blue, navy, ice blue and grey while green eyes are extremely noticeable with purple, indigo, and violet. Remember, it’s fine to wear these colours if you feel your glasses make your eyes appear smaller. I know the temptation can be there to overcompensate for the glasses by applying more make-up, but don’t - it’s overkill! Glasses and dramatic smokey eyes do not go together… or tons of colours all the way up the eyelid for that matter! Instead, focus on great skin - and your lips. Wear a generous amount of lipgloss or a strong lip tone. If you still prefer to focus on your eye make-up rather than the lips, work along your lash line with a pencil, smudging with possibly dark greys or warm browns, and keeping the focus on the eye shape as opposed to the eyelid or brow bone. And don’t forget to use tons of mascara so your lashes definitely do stand out... glasses or not!

ilkenny beauty Sarah Cass didn’t let the bad weather dampen her fashion when she claimed the title of Essential Drogheda Best Dressed Lady at Bellewstown Races recently. The style was so plentiful on the day that celebrity judges Rozanna Purcell and Tiffany Stanley had a real hard time choosing an overall winner from the 15 finalists but it was Sarah’s eye-catching headpiece by Antoinette O’Mahony in Tralee that swayed their decision in the end. ‘The first thing I noticed was the headpiece,’ said Roz. ‘It really caught my eye. The winner brought racing attire but with a modern twist and her individual style shone through. Tiffany added: ‘From head to toe the outfit co-ordinated very well. It was unique and stood out from the crowd.’ Sarah’s winning outfit consisted of a dress from Monsoon, shoes from Debenhams, bag from Butterfly Boutique in Kilkenny and a Newbridge Silverware umbrella. Afterwards she said: ‘It is such a shock to win. I really can’t believe it! I drove up from Kilkenny today with a summer dress and then the weather turned. I thought it might have been inappropriate for the weather but it turned out to be my lucky day.’ Sarah is now looking forward to sharing her prize – a weeklong Globe Travel holiday for two in Majorca as well as €500 spending money – with her mum. A €500 Fuschia MakeUp Voucher was awarded to Drogheda racegoer Grace Barrett who came second, while the third prize of a weekend away for two in Killarney’s Dromhall Hotel was presented to Maura Lilis, Drogheda. A €100 voucher for Scotch Hall went to the Miss Teen Bellewstown, Roisin Kavanagh. Paul Turner weds Lyndsey Bohan

glensidehotel.ie

The Spanish sunshine didn’t disappoint when a 50-strong Drogheda contingent travelled to Nerja for the wedding of 29-year-old Lyndsey Bohan and 33-year-old Paul Turner. It was a magical occasion when the couple said ‘I do’ in the beautiful surrounds of El Salvador Church, Nerja, Costa Del Sol. The outdoors reception was held in Balcon de Europa Hotel, Nerja where guests enjoyed the best of local seafood and Spanish cuisine. Flamenco dancers arrived later in the evening much to everyone’s delight. The bridesmaids were Lyndsey’s friend Linda Carter and sister-in-law Samantha Martin Bohan. The groomsmen included Niall’s brother Matthew Turner and the bride’s brother Gareth Bohan. Cian Martin Bohan was junior groomsman while Shauna May Martin Bohan looked beautiful in her flowergirl dress. The celebrations lasted a week before the couple headed on their honeymoon to Dominican Republic and New York.

Niall Sharkey weds Louise Brennan

glensidehotel.ie

Louise Brennan and Niall Sharkey have come a long way since they first met 14 years ago in the Lemon and Clove Disco in Ardee! Having popped the question in the Westbury Hotel, Dublin on Louise’s birthday in December 2010, Niall and Louise married in Mary Immaculate Church, Collon on February 24th, 2012. It was an amazing day for the couple with the sun shining throughout. Wearing a gown by Pronovias, which she bought in The White Room in Mullingar, the bride had three bridesmaids – her sisters Karen Lynch, Lorraine Burns and Tracey Gillespie. Niall’s brother was best man and his friends Brian O’Hanlon and Robbie Keenan were groomsmen. A reception for close family and friends was held in Trim Castle with music into the night by the excellent Fuzzy Burgers. Louise was particularly delighted to share the occasion with her brother Darren who travelled home from Australia specially. For their honeymoon the bride and groom spent three weeks in Las Vegas, San Francisco and Cancun in Mexico. Photographs by Clare Maloney, Stabannon, Co. Louth

Ged Campbell weds Audrey Sullivan

The wedding ceremony of childhood sweethearts Audrey Sullivan and Ged Campbell took place in Holy Family Church, Ballsgrove. Having met at school in St Oliver’s Community College, the Drogheda couple had been ‘an item’ for 12 years before getting engaged. It didn’t take long for the wedding planning to get underway and they soon decided on the CityNorth Hotel as the perfect venue for their reception. Drogheda band Electric Avenue ensured it was a party to remember – and if there was one special moment that stood out most for the newlyweds, it was when their friends took to the stage at the end of the night to play air guitar! Joined by over 120 family and friends, the bride and groom never stopped smiling on the day. Audrey wore a beautiful gown from the Bridal Studio, Drogheda, while her bridesmaids – friends Marie Mulligan, Sharon Hickey and niece Amy Smith – got their dresses in All About Brides, Termonfeckin. The groom’s suit came from McKenna Man, Drogheda as did the bestmen’s Michael Faulkner and David Brennan. For their honeymoon, the newlyweds enjoyed a two-week holiday in Florida. Photographs by 22

business Describe your business? I provide a range of marketing and copywriting services to both business owners and executives. I write marketing copy, otherwise known as marketing literature or collateral, i.e., blogs, website content, brochures, email campaigns, basically anything that promotes a business. I mentor business owners who want to focus and grow their business using marketing. I also train employees within organisations on how to be better at business writing and finally, I deliver marketing training to both organisations and further education institutes. Your book, ‘31 Days to Write Better Copy’, has recently received a second small business award, congratulations! Tell us about it and what inspired you to write it? Thanks for the congratulations, I really appreciate that. I’m thrilled that it has won two awards now. The first was judged by my peers in writing in the US with the APEX Publication Excellence Award. This second award was decided by Small Business owners and it’s a huge honour to win this one because my goal when writing this book was to help small business owners. One thing that I have noticed over the years is that business people know their business and their products/services inside out. But if you ask them to write about it, they struggle. Many business owners write for themselves rather than for their customers which results in a disconnect. I wanted small business owners to change that mindset and with the help of my book and their own knowledge to make their written sales or marketing literature better. How did you get into this line of work? After graduating from UCD in 1997, I saw that a technology company based in Howth called Datalex were hiring IT graduates so I thought to myself that they might need business graduates as well to cope with the demand of their IT services. I sent in a letter and my CV on the off-chance, and the MD, Neil Wilson, loved my approach. Myself and another business graduate were tasked with turning this technology focused company into a marketing oriented company. When our boss left two months after we were taken on, we were left to run the marketing department! We had to get back to our college books and really get to grips with marketing, in terms of strategy and communications. For me it was a baptism of fire and I loved every minute of the challenge. I really

enjoyed my time in Datalex. The rest they say is history and I’ve been a marketer ever since. What or who has been your greatest influence in business and why? It’s hard to say who or what. I could list the Richard Bransons or Anita Roddicks because what they did is purely phenomenal. But I look at the people for whom I’ve worked, in particular Neil Wilson of Datalex and Gerry Samuels & Stuart Coulson of Gradient Solutions/ Sabre. They inspired me. Very different personalities but they did what it took to make their businesses a success. I admire people who start something and have worked really hard to get what they have and

books planned? The big book project this year is the Marketing Book for SMEs. There is a lot of research involved with that because I want it to be different to the other marketing books out there. It will be theoretical yet practical with case studies that other business owners can relate to. What was your first job and how much did you earn? My first job was picking strawberries in An Grianan for something like 5p a punnet. My first job with a payslip was in Mosney selling rock and ice-cream. I admire other people’s memories because I can’t remember how much

Small Talk with...

Denise Fay

MD of Achieve Marketing & author of the award-winning book ‘31 Days to Write Better Copy’ where they are. Owning a business is not easy and every business owner has my admiration. What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date? Writing the book is definitely a huge achievement. But if I have to focus on one accomplishment, it has to be setting up a business that helps other businesses. To be able to use my knowledge, my marketing background and my copywriting skillset to help promote another business is a huge achievement. What one thing have you learned as a small business owner that has served you well over the years? Be yourself. When I look back at my sales and my clients, I realise that being myself was the one thing that won over those clients and sales. People buy from people and yes, you need to back it up with knowledge, credibility, results, benefits and features of your service. But all other things being equal, people do business with the people they like. Do you have any new projects coming up or new

I earned. I just remember that I ate a lot of chips that summer! How do you balance family time with work time? I don’t know to be honest! My husband has his own business too so we’re often found on our computers of an evening. It’s hard to find the right balance. But having my little son, Luke, means that life is more balanced. He comes first. I work around him and his schedule. How important is social media in your business – and which platform do you prefer? It’s important but it isn’t the only method of communication or promotion I use. In fact, every business owner should have at least seven ways to promote their business. Social media is just one. So as a tool, it is important to me. I use facebook, twitter, linkedin and I prefer the platform that brings results and that depends on the campaign to be honest.

n o d i k t s Coole the block Drive

Make: Fiat Abarth Model: 500c Price: €30,000 as tested

By Stephen Watson, of

I

’m not going to beat around the bush here; this is one of the coolest, best cars I’ve ever driven. Normally a conclusion like that would come at the end, and a review should be impartial, but I just can’t contain how good this car really is. This car is what driving is all about. Based on the FIAT 500 Cabriolet, an already great car, Abarth (the racing devision of FIAT) have decided to work their magic on the supermini by squeezing in a 1.4 litre 140bhp turbo petrol engine. 140bhp in a FIAT 500! That’s standard power for a family saloon, but the little Abarth doesn’t weight near as much as said saloon. The result is 0-100kph in and around 8 seconds, and the nicest sound I’ve ever heard a car make. When in standard mode, torque is down and the steering is lighter, to make for more economical and easier driving, especially around

town. I found it difficult to keep it in standard mode as sport mode and that extra torque and nicely weighted steering is just so addictive. The ride is comfortable, even given the firmer sports suspension. The seats hug you tightly and everything on the centre console and dash feels like it’s where it should be. The rag top is fantastic, push a little button located just above the rear view mirror, and you can retract the canvas roof at speeds of up to 80kph. Considering most roof switches cut off at around 30kph, that’s impressive. Whether the roof is up or down, there’s minor wind buffeting and road

MyFirstWheels.ie is a concise new online information source aimed at making life easier for those who wish to get driving. It supplies everything you need to get on the road, in the quickest and safest way possible. For Young Drivers, By Young Drivers

noise, definitely less than expected. Bluetooth connectivity and mp3/aux compatibility come as standard, as do a gear shift indicator and countless other bells and whistles. So surely this quick, comfortable, fun to drive car is awful on fuel? Wrong. I managed 6.0l/100km during my week with it. On longer journeys I managed 5l/100km. That’s not just OK, that’s impressive. So then where does this car fall down? Well it doesn’t. I probably sound like I’m trying to sell this car here, but it really is just that good. Take some of the options off, and spec the hard top version of this Abarth, and prices start from just €23,000. And that means it’s a serious contender for cars such as the Mini Cooper S and Skoda Fabia RS. However, I haven’t tried either of those yet, so I’ll let you make your own opinions.

Sarajit Chanda of Fuchsia House, Ardee takes us on a journey to Bangladesh where the street food sings of flavour

M

ost of us love a good curry and with so many varieties and options available it is fair to say we are spoiled for choice. Fuchsia House Restaurant in Ardee is famous for wonderfully authentic curries and for its dedication to promoting local food. Owner/Chef Sarajit Chanda and his wife Sarah Nic Lochlainn recently combined these two passions in a themed evening called ‘Bangladeshi Street Food meets Irish Craft Beers’. Guest speaker for the evening was Tom Doorley of RTE’s The Restaurant and guests included Gavin Duffy of Dragons’ Den who recently invested in the couple’s retail brand, Aruna Sauces. Sarajit gave the opening address and told diners that he took great pleasure in creating for them quintessential dishes from his country. Then he disappeared into the kitchen and left Tom Doorley to pair his colourful, flavoursome, aromatic dishes with beers from craft brewers around the country. The match was hugely successful: the food sang of flavour and the beers added depth, richness and spiciness to this unique dining experience. Here’s a sample of what diners enjoyed on the night...

What to do:

Congrats Patricia on becoming the second only Louth Rose to reach the finals – what does the competition mean to you? It’s a dream come true! As a kid watching it with my mam and sister I always said I would enter it but I suppose it’s something that I never got round to doing until this year. It’s such an honour to be going to Tralee; I’m absolutely over the moon! How did you come to enter it? I said it to my parents years ago – and they laughed at me because they thought I was messing. Then this year my dad arrived home one day with the application form – and it was me laughing at him this time because I thought I was a bit old. However, when I discovered that the age limit to enter was 27 I decided it was now or never because I had just turned 27.
