Time to expose immigration reform roadblock

t’s vital we bring immigrants out of the shadows and create a path to citizenship, presidential hopeful Barack Obama said in March 2007 on “Larry King Live.” In 2008 in San Diego, Obama addressed the National Council of La Raza’s annual conference, where he pledged to make comprehensive immigration reform a top priority in his first year as president. Two months into his presidency, Obama met with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. During that March 2009 meeting, he repeated his support for reform. In August 2009, Obama told Hispanic reporters he anticipated legislation to be drafted by year’s end. He’d directed Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to work with lawmakers to get a bill drafted. In March 2010, Obama delivered a videotaped message to thousands of demonstrators on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. He renewed his pledge to “fix the broken immigration system.” Four months later, President Obama gave his first speech devoted to immigration policy. He remained committed to overhauling U.S. immigration laws. He announced the development of a bipartisan framework for the legislation. In the meantime, he’d charged Napolitano with improving immigration enforcement policy. That was in July 2010. On Aug. 18, 2011, the Obama administration announced immigration enforcement policy changes. Arresting and deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records and those who pose a national security or public safety threat would be the new central focus, Napolitano said. The new rules called for individually reviewing each of about 300,000 pending deportations. Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials would be allowed to exercise greater “prosecutorial discretion” in determining which immigrants represent low priorities for removal and which should be deported. Undocumented immigrants without criminal records who’ve been working here and young people who arrived as minors would be allowed to stay in the country indefinitely and apply for a work permit. The changes would take effect immediately, Napolitano said. But in late October, the Homeland Security chief hedged when pressed during congressional hearings for a progress report and timeline for putting the changes into practice. She said implementation, including the case-by-case review, would begin in a “few weeks” in unnamed, select districts and later be extended nationwide. Yet on Nov. 9, the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and the American Immigration Council (AIC) aired a troubling report. It was based on a review of 252 deportation cases from attorneys across the country and information from all 28 ICE offices nationwide. “Most ICE offices have not changed their practices since the issuance of the new directives,” AILA and AIC ascertained. The various ICE offices nationwide are “applying different standards of prosecutorial discretion.” Just a few have put into practice any of the new rules, and “many are actively resistant.” Homeland officials acknowledged that while defending the “policy’s slow start,” according to a New York Times article dated Nov. 13, fully three months after the immigration enforcement policy shift rollout. The Obama administration’s lethargic approach to inaugurating policy changes strains credulity near the breaking point. Coupled with Obama’s inability in nearly four years to lead a successful campaign for comprehensive immigration reform, it begs the following questions: Is Obama’s support for immigration reform genuine or counterfeit? Or is this a case of weak and irresolute leadership? It’s time to find out. O O

After acknowledging the university’s “willingness to commit and initiate” the program he was hired to develop and head, Carranza focused on three themes: the Hispanic community at-large, local Hispanic milestones and the way forward. Growth in numbers alone won’t fuel progress in the Hispanic community, he said. He cited key hurdles: the high dropout rate of Hispanic high school students, allure of gangs and teen pregnancy, stressing education’s role. “Success in education for Latinos(as) can’t be taken for granted,” Carranza said. “It must be well-planned if we’re to equip (Hispanic youth) with the needed educational credentials to develop successful careers.” Carranza hailed recent historic “firsts.” In 2010, for example, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Mo., appointed the first Latino Freda Mendez-Smith, Erika Ramirez with Edie director, Julian Zugazagoitia, and put on an exhibit Lambert.

The Global Entrepreneurship Week was based on public conversations between Crosby Kemper III, director of the library and distinguished community leaders. During the conversation Reyes talked about her achievements, ordeals and experiences in the United States and the start of Dos Mundos in Kansas City. In addition, she talked about her family background and the different challenges she had to overcome. The event was co-sponsored by Truman Medical Centers who gave an award to Reyes and recognize her work in the community.

During the luncheon, Mattie Rhodes highlighted some of the programs it offers throughout the year to area youth. “We are here to assist every child and young adult and give them the resources necessary to reach their full potential,” said Alisha Gambino, Mattie Rhodes director of youth and young adult services, in a press release. The luncheon had the attendance of over 600 people and Mattie Rhodes raised over 100,000 at the event. The money raised will go towards supporting programs at the agency. As part of the event, the organization awarded Adelle Hall with the Mattie Rhodes Spirit Award. Sólo en 140 letras, símbolos o espacios. Ni uno más. Y con más de 200 millones de cuentas registradas en Twitter, alguien, en algún lugar, muy probablemente leerá el mensaje. Políticos, actores, cantantes y periodistas ya no pueden decir que no saben lo que la gente piensa. Basta con meterse a Facebook o Twitter y sabrás -- con pelos, señales y, a veces, hasta insultos-exactamente qué es lo que piensan de ti. Tras más de 25 años trabajando en la televisión, ya no tengo que esperar a los ratings, encuestas, estudios de mercado o las cartas de los televidentes para medir las reacciones de lo que informamos cada noche. En varias ocasiones, aún no ha terminado el noticiero y ya tengo mi cuenta de Twitter inundada de comentarios y quejas. Lo mismo ocurre a otros reporteros en televisión, radio, diario y medios digitales. Ahora tenemos los oídos llenos. Pero lo importante es que Twitter nos ha permitido una información circular. Informo y soy informado simultáneamente. Twitter rompió la tradicional barrera mediática entre el que enviaba un mensaje y el que lo recibe; hizo de la retroalimentación algo normal. Ese es el cambio más importante. Hay otros. A través de Twitter, todos los filtros han sido eliminados de la ecuación: un mensaje de campaña política o el desmentido de un chisme o rumor ya no tienen que pasar primero por el micrófono de un reportero o los estándares de los editores que preparan un periódico. Y en consecuencia, los políticos y otros líderes de opinión están utilizando Twitter para evadir el periodismo tradicional. Los presidentes han entendido esto mejor que nadie. En @chavezcandanga el Presidente de Venezuela responde a sus críticos sin someterse a las preguntas incómodas de periodistas independientes. Con @ FelipeCalderon el mandatario mexicano se evita las conferencias de prensa. Además, las votaciones ya no se pueden ganar sin Twitter. La realidad es que, en estos días, el que no está en Twitter no sale en la foto y no puede ganar una presidencia. (Eso explica que el candidato presidencial priísta que va adelante en las encuestas en México, Enrique Peña Nieto, se haya incorporado recientemente a Twitter (@ EPN)). Como periodista, no puedo competir contra la ubicuidad de Twitter, porque simplemente no puedo estar en todas partes al mismo tiempo. Twitter sí puede. Cuando ocurre un accidente, un desastre natural u otras noticias de último momento, lo más probable es que los informes iniciales sean dados a conocer por personas que envían twits desde sus celulares, más que por un periodista. Sin embargo, si bien Twitter es rápido, no confiere credibilidad. Todas las formas de comunicación masiva están plagadas por información falsa y sesgada, y Twitter no es la excepción. Por eso, en esta era de tanta basura digital y spam, los periodistas son más necesarios que nunca para esclarecer qué es verdadero y relevante y qué no es. Por último, Twitter nos ha cambiado la ortografía y la gramática. O, para ser más preciso, las ha puesto patas p’arriba. Para meter todo en 140 caracteres hemos apachurrado y despanzurrado al español. Los acentos prácticamente han desaparecido. After all, if a Twitter user has the urge to share his opinion, he can use the allotted 140 characters to broadcast it to the world – and with more than 200 million accounts registered at Twitter, someone, somewhere will likely read the message. The ease with which comments can be sent means those in the public spotlight – everyone from politicians to celebrities to journalists – no longer have to wonder what their constituents, supporters or fans are thinking. All they have to do is log in to Twitter to access instant results, which sometimes include choice epithets. Take me, for example: After 25-plus years of working in TV news, I no longer have to wait for reports on ratings, survey results, market analysis or letters from viewers to gauge public reaction to my work. By tweeting, I simultaneously inform and am informed. Indeed, all remaining barriers between the sender of a message and its receiver have been torn down, so feedback is immediate and timely. These days, my Twitter account is sometimes flooded with comments and complaints before my newscast is completed. Journalists everywhere get an earful every day. Through Twitter, all filters have been removed from the equation. A campaign message or a denial of a rumor no longer have to pass through a reporter’s microphone or the standards of editors preparing a newspaper. Therefore, politicians and other opinion leaders are using Twitter to circumvent traditional journalism. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (@chavezcandanga) uses Twitter to try to refute his critics without having to field questions from the press. Similarly, Mexican President Felipe Calderon (@FelipeCalderon) makes a habit of avoiding news conferences. And let’s not forget Twitter’s influence on elections. It’s a fact of modern life that candidates who aren’t tweeting can’t compete with those who are. This explains why, in Mexico, the presidential candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party, Enrique Pena Nieto (Peña Nieto in Spanish), who’s the leading contender, according to recent surveys, recently opened his own account (@EPN). As a journalist, I cannot compete directly with Twitter because I can’t be everywhere at once. Twitter can. When an accident, a natural disaster or other breaking news event occurs, it’s likely the initial reports will be conveyed by people sending tweets from their cell phones, rather than by journalists. However, although Twitter is fast, it doesn’t bestow credibility. All forms of mass communication are rife with misinformation and bias. Twitter is no exception. The irony, then, is that in this digital age of high-speed news dissemination, journalists are needed more than ever to distinguish between the accurate, relevant facts and the background noise, to explain what actually happened. Twitter is not only changing how we communicate, but also what we communicate. It’s altering our orthography and grammar as we type into those tiny screens. To convey information in only 140 characters, we must tear apart our language and cram it together in new forms. Twitter is, in fact, making possible the streamlining of language suggested by Colombian writer and Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez in 1997 during a speech in Zacatecas, Mexico, years before the launch of the first online social network. “Spelling, that terror visited on human beings from the cradle onward, should be pensioned off,” he said during the First International Congress of the Spanish Language. Garcia Marquez, a true visionary, imagined a Spanish language without h’s and one in which neologisms would be universally accepted (“retweet” comes to mind). Indeed, Twitter is the new orthographic Macondo, that magical fictional town Garcia Marquez described in “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and other books: Everything goes, and nothing is impossible or forbidden. If you can imagine it, it exists. Twitter is changing our lives. There’s no turning back.

Durante la ceremonia, varias organizaciones recibieron premios por su compromiso y desarrollo en la comunidad hispana. El Colegia Donnelly en Kansas City, Kan., recibió el reconocimiento Friend of the Micro-Business (Amigo de la Microempresa). Elvira’s Cakes y Larry Boykin Electrical fueron nombradas Microempresas del Año. HEDC realiza varios talleres diseñados para ayudar a los aspirantes a empresarios. n Nov. 14, the Hispanic Economic Development Corp. (HEDC) celebrated its 18th anniversary at the Boulevard (Parte Brewing Co. in Kansas Column by Jesus Lopez-Gomez and Nancy Vasquez City, Mo. During the ceremony, various organizations received awards for their commitment to and development in the Hispanic community. Donnelly College in Kansas City, Kan., received the Friend of the Micro-Business Award 2011. Elvira’s Cakes & Larry Boykin Electrical were named the 2011 Micro-Business of the Year. The HEDC hosts various workshops designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs. The non-profit organization has already planned multiple activities and partnerships for 2012 that are designed to help Hispanics increase their business power in the area.

Descripción: Yo describiría e s t a dramatización detrás de cámaras de la filmación de la cinta de Marilyn Monroe de 1957 “El Príncipe y la Corista” en la forma en que describiría a Marilyn, mi artista favorita – juguetona, ingeniosa, suavemente divertida, tierna y cálida, con un trasfondo de melancolía y angustia. Esa descripción de ella se ajusta perfectamente con este filme, basado en los escritos del cineasta británico de Colin Clark, un asistente de director de “El Príncipe y la Corista”. Oh, y en su manera dulce y sutil, es un tributo a una película de la década de los 1950s que no protagonizó Marilyn Monroe: el clásico “Vacaciones en Roma”. Este último tipo de mentiroso me acuerda el cuento de un príncipe chino bello y poderoso, quien reunió a todas las muchachas del pueblo para entre ellas escoger a su esposa. Como reto les dio una semilla y dijo “deben cultivarla con amor, aquella que traiga la flor más bella en seis meses será escogida como mi esposa y futura emperatriz de China”. Entre las bellas y sofisticadas aspirantes se encontraba una humilde y sencilla joven, la cual sabía que sus posibilidades de ser escogida eran remotas; pero aceptó el reto con tal de estar cerca del príncipe. Sembró con mucha dedicación su semilla, pero ni un tallito brotó.

Llegó el día en que cada una tenía que llevar su flor, la chinita vio con decepción que su tiesto era el único vacío y que todas las demás mostraban flores fabulosas. Su sorpresa fue cuando el príncipe le dijo: “A ti te escojo como mi esposa”. Nadie entendía por qué, y concluyó: “esta joven fue la única que cultivó la flor que la hace digna de ser mi esposa y emperatriz: La flor de la honestidad. ¡Todas las semillas que repartí eran falsas! Las mentirosas de esta historia por querer aparentar ser grandes jardineras perdieron un reino por miedo a parecer menos ante los ojos del hombre que querían, pero la ganadora tuvo la suficiente seguridad en sí misma para aceptarse y no acomplejarse de su realidad. Tú, al igual que esta joven, vales por quien eres y no tienes que mentir para justificar tu verdad. Las mentiras son como una bola de nieve que hay que darles seguimiento porque siguen creciendo. Minutes after the Kansas City Chiefs’ 13-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday night (Nov. 27) at Arrowhead Stadium, Chiefs wide receiver Steve Breaston made something clear to reporters: The team still believes in quarterback Tyler Palko. Filling in for the second straight game for injured starter Matt Cassel, Palko committed four turnovers. Late in the first quarter, he lost a fumble. He threw three interceptions, including one during the final minute of the fourth quarter that squashed Kansas City’s hopes of defeating the defending AFC champions. With Kansas City trailing by four and facing first-and-15 at the Pittsburgh 37-yard line, Palko threw long for wide receiver Dwayne Bowe. Steelers cornerback Keenan Lewis intercepted the overthrown pass. Pittsburgh then ran out the clock to drop the Chiefs to 4-7 entering their meeting with the Chicago Bears this Sunday (Dec. 4) at Soldier Field. Still, the Chiefs believe in Palko because “outside of turnovers, we moved the ball pretty well,” said Breaston, who caught four passes for 44 yards. Statistically, the Chiefs didn’t move the ball as well as the Steelers. Pittsburgh netted 290 yards of total offense to Kansas City’s 252. In addition, the Steelers got inside the red zone (inside Kansas City’s 20-yard line) three times, scoring once. The Chiefs never reached the red zone. Still, during their last possession, the Chiefs moved the football far enough to put themselves in position for a comeback win, as Chiefs coach Todd Haley pointed out during his postgame press conference. Taking possession at their 30 with 4:12 remaining, they reached the Pittsburgh 32 with 38 seconds remaining. To help them get there, Palko completed six passes for 34 yards. Then, a false start penalty against Chiefs tackle Jared Gaither put the Chiefs back at the 37. In Gaither’s defense, the fifth-season veteran was going in for injured starter Brandon Albert “after sitting there (on the sideline) the whole game” and had a few Steelers “breathing down his neck,” Haley said. On the other hand, when “you’re moving the football, any kind of minus play

hurts you,” Haley commented. Of course, the turnovers hurt, too, particularly the interception that followed the penalty. “When you turn the ball over four times, you generally don’t have a chance in the end…. The last one, ultimately, got us,” Haley said.
