Promueven unidad y cultura hispana

Un grupo en el área de Kansas City está promoviendo la cultura hispana a través de la danza.

En 1988, los maestros de danza Dennis Santoyo y John Gutierrez participaron en el evento Fiesta Hispana presentando un baile. Impulsado por la recepción a su presentación, nació la compañía Los Bailadores de Kansas City.

“Somos un grupo sin fines de lucro”, dijo Santoyo. “Nunca pedimos dinero. Todas las actuaciones son gratuitas”.

El grupo creció exponencialmente cuando se unió Teresa Pérez. Para 1991, ella había tomado las riendas del grupo, haciéndose cargo de toda la logística y los aspectos detrás de escena de la actuación.

El grupo es diverso, formado por bailarines desde los 13 años hasta bailarines de 60 años. Ed Rodríguez, por ejemplo, se unió por primera vez hace unos 20 años. Bailó durante tres años antes de tomar un año sabático. En 2021, regresó. A los 64 años, es el bailarín de mayor edad del grupo.

“Disfruto el baile”, dijo Rodríguez. “Es hermoso mostrar nuestra cultura a cualquiera que asista a las funciones en las que actuamos, todos los colores de los atuendos y disfraces”.

Santoyo, quien ha sido el principal maestro y coreógrafo desde el inicio del grupo, disfruta trabajar con un grupo tan diverso de personas.

Agroup in the Kansas City area is promoting Hispanic culture through dancing.

In 1988, dance teachers Dennis Santoyo and John Gutierrez participated in the Fiesta Hispana event by performing a dance. Sparked by the reception to the performance, the troupe Los Bailadores de Kansas City was born.

“We are a nonprofit group,” said Santoyo. “We never ask for money. All performances are free.”

The group grew exponentially when Teresa Perez joined. By 1991, she had taken the reigns of the group, taking charge of all logistics and behind-the-scenes aspects of performing.

“She’s so generous, but because we’re a nonprofit, all costume costs have been covered by Teresa in the past,” group member Leslie Rodriguez explained.

The group is diverse, consisting of dancers as young as 13 years old all the way up to dancers in their 60s. Ed Rodriguez, for instance, joined for the first time about 20 years ago. He danced for three years before taking a sabbatical. In 2021, he returned. At 64, he’s the oldest dancer in the group.

“I enjoy the dancing,” Rodriguez said. “It’s beautiful to show off our culture to anybody who attends the functions we perform at, all the colors of the outfits and costumes.”

Santoyo — who has been the main teacher and choreographer since the group’s incep tion — enjoys working with such a diverse group of people.

“You get to learn from them, from the youngest to the oldest,” Santoyo said.

The year started with a supply chain problem, as grocery stores nationwide were facing shortages from the country experiencing the spread of Omicron, the then-new COVID subvariant.

Nationwide, multiple media outlets were reporting that U.S. airlines had suspended or reduced services because off staff shortages and winter storms.

Area resident Lilian Diaz retired after 52 years of working in the health care industry in Kansas.

On Jan. 30, Kansas City lost to visiting Cincinnati in the AFC championship game, ending the Chiefs’ bid to play in a third straight Super Bowl.

In Kansas City area news, the Guadalupe Centers Schools received a five-year renewal with the Missouri Charter Public Schools Association.

Guadalupe Centers Inc. (GCI) hosted its traditional Cinco de Mayo fiesta again after two years of the COVID pandemic.

On May 5, the Mexican Consulate in Kansas City, Missouri, recognized Rose Marie Mendez’s dedication to telling stories of the diverse regions in Mexico through costumes and choreography by presenting her with an Ohtli Award at Donnelly College in Kansas City, Kansas. This award is given to Mexican citizens or citizens of Mexican descent who work abroad promoting Mexican culture.

Humans have started each calendar year for some 4,000 years by making resolutions, historians tell us. In 2,000 B.C., the people of Babylonia observed the New Year around the vernal equinox – at the start of the planting season. During Akitu, their 12-day religious festival celebrating the new year, the Babylonians promised the pagan gods to repay debts and return borrowed farming equipment. In return for keeping the simple resolutions, the gods would bestow good fortune on the Babylonians in the coming year.

The ancient Romans adopted the Babylonian new year traditions and passed them on but moved the start of the calendar year. Over the centuries, the promises made in honor of the new year and the culture around the custom evolved. In modern America, resolutions tend to reflect one’s education level, age, financial situation, health and marital status, according to sociologists. Fewer resolutions are religious in nature; instead more center on self-improvement. And today’s culture of making new year resolutions customarily includes a corollary: breaking them.

Experts share tips for making resolutions a reality. List what we really want to accomplish in broad terms and from that, set a small number of bite-sized, doable goals. For instance, if weight-loss is our ambition, resolve to lose five pounds by St. Patrick’s Day. If our ultimate objective is getting fit, pick an activity we enjoy – walking, swimming, etc., -- and schedule it 20 minutes a day twice a week. As we become habituated, we can comfortably increase the frequency and duration. And the accomplishment will spark momentum.

Making too many resolutions or setting excessively ambitious goals is boring, pointless and unproductive and sets us up for failure. What we’re after is satisfying success, and if undertaken pragmatically on a small-scale, reaching milestones will be fun and exciting.

It’s important to remember that while New Year’s Day on the calendar is a grand beginning, every sunrise offers a fresh start, an opportunity to begin again. Experiencing a setback in the quest to reach our goals is possible, but as Albert

Protests continued in Iran after 22-year-old woman Mahsa Amini had been arrested and killed by Iran’s morality police. By then, there were dozens dead.

On Oct. 1, two research scientists from South America were found dead inside an apartment in Kansas City, Missouri. Two days later, police officers identified the victims as Argentinian Camila Behrensen, 24; and Chilean Pablo Guzmán Palma, 25.

Conozco su respiración —y él mis ronquidos— mejor que nadie. Me acabo de dar cuenta que sigo hablando de él en presente. Tampoco he querido borrar el último texto que me envió. Es como tenerlo un poquito a mi lado, como estuvo por más de dos décadas. Él me puso mi primer apodo: Pote. Suponemos que viene de potrillo —porque yo corría mucho de niño— y Alex sólo lo acortó y lo alegró. Él fue todo lo que yo nunca pude ser. Hizo pronto las paces con la vida, le exprimió cada momento y se echaba unas siestas envidiables.

Si el éxito en la vida se mide por el número de amigos, Alex ganó. A su apresurado e inesperado funeral estuvieron todos esos amigos que hizo en la primaria, un grupo que se ha seguido reuniendo varias veces al mes durante décadas. Nunca he recibido abrazos más apretados, con los hombros inundados de lágrimas, que los que me dieron los amigos de Alex en su velorio.

Alex odiaba ir al doctor. Entre sus angustias principales estaba el esperar los resultados de unos exámenes médicos. Por eso me lo imagino en su cama de terapia intensiva, rodeado de doctores y aparatos, preguntándose lo que le iba a pasar mientras abría sus pestañotas en esos ojos azules.

Pero hasta el final, me cuentan mis hermanos, estuvo convencido que iba a salir adelante. Así era él. Él había vencido la polio de niño —con la ayuda de una cabeza rota de una estatuilla de San Martín de Porres, según cuenta la leyenda

Cuánto quisiera yo tener fe en momentos como este. Sin embargo, la biología me intriga y me inquieta tanto como la metafísica; Alex —que tanto se cuidaba y que tenía una cabellera completa— murió a los 63, casi a la misma edad que nuestro papá.

Su muerte me sorprendió mientras volaba de Miami a Ciudad de México. Al aterrizar, un mensaje frío me rompió las esperanzas de verlo con vida o, al menos, de despedirnos. Desde entonces he estado tarareando algunos versos de “Elegía” —la canción de Joan Manuel Serrat con letra de Miguel Hernández— y me siento un poquito menos sólo y triste. El arte sana:

Todos perdimos algo con la muerte de Alex. Pero nunca he escuchado un llanto más desgarrador que el de mi mamá, en la noche, sentada sobre la orilla de su cama, luego de un largo día de pésames. Nada se compara con el dolor por la pérdida de un hijo o una hija. “¿Es verdad lo que ocurrió?”, me preguntaba ella, entre sollozos.

Alex murió como hubiera querido; en un día de fiesta, mientras millones en el planeta celebraban el triunfo de Argentina en el Mundial del futbol. Estoy seguro de que hasta hubiera hecho una broma al respecto.

Escribo todo esto porque no sé hacer otra cosa que me ayude a paliar el dolor. Pero lo que sí sé es que, tras una fuerte pérdida, Alex —mi inolvidable y relajiento compañero de cuarto— nos habría empujado a todos a celebrar con más fuerza la vida, la familia, los amigos y esta temporada de fiestas.

The blizzard that hit multiple states before Christmas has left more than 50 people dead.

According to NBC News, Kansas and Missouri are among the states reporting blizzardrelated deaths. At one point, more than 1 million victims were without power, The Hill and other media outlets reported Dec. 23.

The blizzard affected life in the United States in other ways. The website FlightAware. com stated there were more than 6,000 flight cancellations, as reported Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) by BusinessInsider.com. Moreover, several airlines issued travel alerts to people who were flying to let them know they could make flight changes without a difference in fare or paying a fee.

Northeasterner Richard Aparicio was among those travelers who managed to leave for his destination before the storm.

“I saw all the chaos that it caused in several airports,” Aparicio said.

Had Aparicio not left a few hours before the beginning of the storm, he wouldn’t have been “able to visit my family for Christmas,” he said.

In other blizzard-related news, President Biden has approved an emergency declaration to authorize the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide relief resources to the state of New York, multiple media outlets reported. As the White House declared in a statement, FEMA is authorized by the Biden administration “to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures.”

“Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency,” the statement read.

The project includes but not limited to the following scopes of work: demolition, pavers, landscape, concrete, masonry, steel, railings, carpentry, architectural woodwork, cabinets, countertops, roofing, flashings, applied fireproofing, insulation, sealants, stucco and EIFS, doors, OH doors, storefront, drywall, ACT, resilient flooring and carpet, tile, painting, Div 10, equipment, window treatments, appliances, trash chute, elevator modernization, MEPFP.
