s was reported in Dos Mundos’ June 2 issue, Kansas City area Hispanic workers seeking work are encountering obstacles when they seek employment.

Workers such as Pedro Suarez have reportedly experienced problems when dealing with the Full Employment Council’s (FEC’s) Kansas City area ofďŹ ces. They speak little or no English, but can’t get assistance in Spanish, even though some FEC ofďŹ ces have a constant supply of Hispanic clients.

Copper theft poses public safety threat

I

t’s a safe bet the thug who netted about $30 from burglarizing a home in May in Kansas City, Mo.’s Westside neighborhood blew that money long ago and has moved on to new prey.

But he left the hapless Westside homeowner with more than an unpleasant memory and a minor inconvenience.

To get to the copper pipes, the perpetrator tore up the drywall. Water flooded the house. New drywall had to be mounted and walls painted after new piping was installed. Standing water destroyed the linoleum and carpeting, which had to be replaced after the subfloor was professionally dried and treated for mold. So far, repairing the damage has cost the homeowner more than $3,000 – more than 10 times the amount a scrap metal dealer would’ve paid the burglar.

It was devastating for the homeowner, whose insurance didn’t cover the damage. It also reflects a widespread, alarming trend.

Nationwide, the economic and security impact of this destructive type of larceny is considerable and dangerous. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, copper theft costs us more than $1 billion a year. Even more worrisome, the FBI calls such thefts a threat to public safety and the nation’s critical infrastructure.

Thieves after metals are plaguing homes, businesses, churches and government properties everywhere. In May alone in the Kansas City area, copper thieves hit scores of vacant and occupied houses, Spay and Neuter Kansas City, the Cerner Corp. and TV station KMBC. They also hit area churches and cemeteries; Hidden Valley Park in Blue Springs, Mo.; Waterwell Park in Kansas City, Mo.; and vacant buildings.

Nationwide, copper thieves have stripped wiring from overhead power lines, from alongside railroad tracks and power lines to the lights and crossing arms, and from Federal Aviation Administration towers. They’ve stripped them from crop irrigation systems; water pumping stations; and even from tornado warning sirens, cutting electrical power, water services and communications, and endangering lives.

Cash-strapped municipalities and state highway departments are hard-pressed to repair the damages. That has resulted in streetlight blackouts along public thoroughfares – streets, roads, highways and hiking and biking trails – and at soccer fields, golf courses, tennis courts and Little League baseball fields.

“This is a national security issue,” said Bryan Jacob, head of the national Coalition Against Copper Theft.

Kansas is among several states this year to enact stronger measures to combat the theft of vendible metals. The new law imposes licensing and other requirements on scrap metal dealers and raises criminal penalties to include the cost of replacing what thieves steal.

In 2008, Missouri passed a law making the stealing of utility wires and pipes a Class C felony and requiring scrap metal dealers to photocopy identification of people selling more than $50 worth of metals. That year, the Kansas City Council passed an ordinance requiring scrap dealers to register with the city.

The flaws in the system are overwhelmed law enforcement agencies and residents who ignore suspicious or unusual activity. Community awareness and involvement is critical to deterring metal theft, officials insist.

It’ll take all of us earnestly working together to stop this insidious, threatening, costly scourge.

Now, the metal thieves have the upper hand. It’s time for a showdown. We must press the police and lawmakers for a new campaign to get tough.

MYTH: Undocumented immigrants are taking jobs away from Americans.

REALITTY: Undocumented Immigrants differ from U.S. citizens in their economic sectors and occupation.

Among unauthorized immigrants in the labor force, 30% are service workers and 21% are construction workers.

An additional 15% are production and installation workers. Twothirds (66%) of unauthorized immigrant workers are employed in these three broad categories; by contrast, only 31% of U.S.-born workers perform those jobs. (*12) Unauthorized immigrants provide an important source of manpower in agriculture, construction, food processing, building cleaning and maintenance, and other similar jobs, at a time when the share of low-skilled, U.S.-born individuals in the labor force has fallen dramatically. Undocumented inows broadly track economic performance, rising during periods of expansion, and stalling during downturns. (*13) Undocumented immigration is sensitive to labor market demand. Immigrants are more likely to work in seasonal activities, such as agriculture, which suffer the largest job losses during downturns. Therefore, the size of the immigrant population changes in response to economic downturns or expansion. (*14) Immigration is not the cause of today’s high unemployment rates. In fact, reliable estimates show that immigration levels —both undocumented and applications for H-1B visas for highskilled professionals— have fallen along with the economic downturn. (*15) In the longer term, however, the U.S. economy is also likely to need immigrant labor as the fertility rate in the United States, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is projected to fall below the replacement level by 2015-2020.

Chavez ready to cast his vote in Peru ChĂĄvez vota en PerĂş

Editor’s preface: On Sunday (June 5), Peru held its runoff presidential election between Keiko Fujimori and Ollanta Humala. Since then, various international news agencies have reported Humala won by about a 3 percent margin.

Shortly before the election, Jorge Ramos wrote the following column about the candidates:

Ha dicho sĂłlo que lo conoce, que fue un “buen soldadoâ€? y que en “un gesto de rebeldĂ­aâ€?

(Humala encabezĂł un levantamiento armado contra el gobierno de Alberto Fujimori en el 2000) se fue a las montaĂąas y luego fue detenido.

La historia verdadera del levantamiento militar de Humala contra Fujimori es mucho mĂĄs complicada y sangrienta, pero ChĂĄvez la simplificĂł y le restĂł importancia. Es la interpretaciĂłn de un golpista hablando de otro golpe. (AquĂ­ estĂĄ el video de ChĂĄvez: bit.ly/ ggFFX7).

La elecciĂłn de este 5 de junio en PerĂş demuestra lo frĂĄgil que es la democracia en nuestro continente. Enfrenta a la hija de un dictador, Keiko Fujimori, con un ex-militar que preďŹ riĂł usar las balas y no las leyes para resolver sus diferencias con el gobierno en turno.

Una vez dicho esto, todo parece indicar que ChĂĄvez serĂĄ, otra vez, un elemento determinante en las elecciones en PerĂş. De alguna manera, ChĂĄvez vota en PerĂş. No es algo nuevo.

Gane quien gane, la democracia pierde fuerza en PerĂş. Ninguno de los dos candidatos se merece el caliďŹ cativo de “demĂłcrataâ€? o “defensor de la democraciaâ€?.

Sus pasados dicen otra cosa.

Por una parte estå Humala, quien tambiÊn fue respaldado por Chåvez en la campaùa presidencial de 2006, y que ha promovido que el estado tome el control de los recursos nacionales peruanos – aunque a últimas fechas ha tratado de dar marcha atrås en cuanto a eso.

Humala, de quien muchos creen fue inuido políticamente por Chåvez durante muchos aùos, ahora ha expresado arrepentimiento por esos vínculos con el líder venezolano. Ha estado tratando de convencer a la gente de que, si triunfa, sus políticas reejarían mås el enfoque brasileùo de libre mercado y democråtico, y no el estilo de control fÊrreo de gobierno de Chåvez en Venezuela.

En el lado opuesto estĂĄ Keiko Fujimori, candidata derechista de PerĂş, cuyo padre fue declarado culpable de abusos contra los derechos humanos en 2009 por el sistema judicial peruano y enviado a prisiĂłn por 25 aĂąos. Aunque Alberto Fujimori fue declarado culpable de corrupciĂłn y de organizar un escuadrĂłn militar de la muerte que asesinĂł a 25 personas, Keiko Fujimori insiste en que su padre es inocente, y ha declarado que deberĂ­a ser liberado.

Humala sabe que el de ChĂĄvez es el abrazo de la muerte (electoral) y ha tratado de marcar una distancia. En una entrevista antes de la primera vuelta, le preguntĂŠ a Humala cual era su relaciĂłn con el Presidente venezolano. “Es la misma relaciĂłn que tengo con todos los presidentes latinoamericanos,â€? me dijo. “Yo no estoy metiendo a ChĂĄvez en la campaĂąa; son mĂĄs bien nuestros adversarios polĂ­ticos que quieren meter a ChĂĄvez en la campaĂąaâ€?.

Eso es cierto. El chavismo estå absolutamente desgastado. Ningún país del continente se quiere parecer a la Venezuela de Chåvez. Basta mencionar la inación, la inseguridad, la falta de libertad de expresión, y la ridícula y ciega idolatría al jefe måximo en Venezuela para dar marcha atrås. Y eso lo sabe Humala.

Pero quizĂĄ ya es muy tarde para lograr desligarse del apretĂłn chavista. ChĂĄvez, no queda la menor duda, genera miedo en muchos paĂ­ses. ÂżQuiĂŠn quiere un ChĂĄvez mexicano, colombiano, chileno, salvadoreĂąo?

Ciertamente, nadie desea que otro ChĂĄvez gobierne PerĂş.

MĂĄs que admiraciĂłn, ChĂĄvez se ha convertido en el ejemplo perfecto de lo que no debe ser un candidato presidencial en AmĂŠrica Latina.

A pesar de tener un significativo (pero cada vez mås pequeùo apoyo) en Venezuela, Chåvez no es un demócrata y ha mentido, agrantemente, en varias ocasiones para llegar y mantenerse en el poder.

DespuĂŠs de ser elegido el 6 de diciembre de 1998, ChĂĄvez me mintiĂł tres veces en una entrevista: 1. Me dijo que estarĂ­a dispuesto a entregar el poder en cinco aĂąos o “incluso antes.â€?

MintiĂł.

2. Me dijo que no nacionalizarĂ­a “absolutamente nada,â€? ninguna empresa.

MintiĂł.

3. Me dijo tambiĂŠn que no tomarĂ­a el control de ningĂşn medio privado de comunicaciĂłn porque “basta con el medio del estado.â€? MintiĂł otra vez. ÂżPor quĂŠ me mintiĂł ChĂĄvez un dĂ­a antes de las elecciones de 1998? Muy sencillo: para ganar. Pero despuĂŠs dio marcha atrĂĄs y hoy es un lĂ­der autoritario con la intenciĂłn de atornillarse eternamente al poder.

El video de esa entrevista que tuve con Chåvez (bit.ly/106E6f) ha circulado ampliamente en Perú, particularmente entre los opositores de Humala. La intención es muy clara: quieren hacerle creer al electorado que las promesas de Humala de que respetarå la democracia, la libertad de prensa y el sistema de mercado libre – al igual como las que hizo Chåvez en 1998 – no tienen ninguna credibilidad.

Imposible saber si Humala las cumplirĂ­a.

Pero lo que sĂ­ sabemos perfectamente es que si para el domingo 5 de junio Humala no logrĂł zafarse del abrazo de ChĂĄvez, perderĂĄ otra vez la elecciĂłn. AsĂ­ de sencillo.

ugo Chavez hasn’t said much about Ollanta Humala, Peru’s national-socialist presidential candidate.

In fact, the only public comments the Venezuelan president has made are that he knows Humala, that Humala was “a good soldier,� and that after a “gesture of rebellion� in Peru (Humala led an armed uprising in 2000 against President Alberto Fujimori’s government), Humala took to the mountains and was soon apprehended.

The story of Humala’s insurrection against the now-imprisoned Fujimori is complex and bloody. When Chavez describes it, as he did during a recent speech in Uruguay, it comes off as one coup leader’s interpretation of another. (Note: A video of Chavez’s speech in Spanish is available at bit.Ly/ggFFX7).

Nevertheless, Chavez might inuence the outcome of this election more than we might suspect. Again, he’ll cast his vote in another country’s race, this time by supporting Humala in Peru’s presidential runoff. This is nothing new.

The contest pits Keiko Fujimori, the former dictator’s daughter, against Humala, a former soldier who preferred bullets to laws when settling his differences with the nation’s authoritarian government.

Regardless of who wins, the loser will clearly be democracy in Peru.

Believed by many to have been politically inuenced by Chavez for many years, Humala has expressed regret for ties to the Venezuelan leader. He has tried to convince people that, if he were to win, his policies would be more reective of Brazil’s freemarket, democratic approach than of Chavez’s iron-ďŹ sted style of governance.

Fujimori, Peru’s right-wing candidate, whose father was convicted of human rights abuses in 2009 by the Peruvian justice system and was sentenced to prison for 25 years. Though the elder Fujimori was found guilty of corruption and organizing a military death squad that killed 25 people, his daughter insists her father is innocent and has said he should be released.

Neither candidate is a champion of democracy.

Humala knows being associated with Chavez is the political kiss of death in Latin America.

That’s why he has distanced himself from Chavez. In an interview before Peru’s primary elections in April, I asked Humala about his relationship with Chavez. “It’s the same relationship I have with all Latin American presidents,� he replied. “I am not inviting Chavez into this campaign – it’s my rivals who want to mix him into the campaign.�

His rivals have good reason.

The so-called “Chavismâ€? ideology has been discredited in Latin America. No country there wants to imitate Venezuela’s ination, widespread national insecurity and lack of basic democratic freedoms, nor the absurd national idolatry of its president.

Humala knows that, but it might be too late for him.

The possibility of a Chavez ally gaining power in Latin America is viewed with fear in many nations. No one wants a Mexican, Colombian, Chilean or Salvadoran Chavez. Certainly, no one wants another Chavez running Peru.

Chavez is all a Latin American presidential candidate shouldn’t be. Despite enjoying a signiďŹ cant – yet slowly shrinking – share of public support in Venezuela, Chavez is no democrat. He also has agrantly lied several times to gain and retain power. After being elected on Dec. 6, 1998, Chavez lied to me three times during an interview: 1. He said he was willing to give up power in ďŹ ve years – “or even before that.â€? A lie.

2. He said he would nationalize “absolutely nothing� in Venezuela. Another lie.

3. He said he wouldn’t try to take control of any private media because “we have enough state media.� Another lie.

The video of my interview with Chavez (available at bit. ly/106E6f) has been widely circulated in Peru, especially among voters opposed to Humala.

Their intention is clear: They want to inform the public that Humala’s recent promises that he’ll uphold democracy, defend press freedoms and preserve the free-market system – the same promises made by Chavez in 1998 – are not to be believed.

Humala gana la segunda vuelta electoral

l domingo (5 de junio), Ollanta Humala venció a Keiko Fujimori en la segunda vuelta de las elecciones presidenciales de Perú para convertirse en el siguiente líder del país sudamericano.

Un reporte emitido por la Oficina Nacional de Procesos Electorales señaló que Humala había obtenido 51.6% de los votos, mientras que Fujimori había recibido 48.39%. Humala ganó 19 de las 25 regiones de Perú y Fujimori las otras 4.

n Sunday (June 5), Ollanta Humala defeated Keiko Fujimori in Peru’s runoff presidential election to become the South American country’s next leader.

A report released by the National Office of Electoral Processes stated Humala had obtained 51.6 percent of the vote, with Fujimori receiving 48.39 percent. Humala won 19 of Peru’s 25 regions. Fujimori won four regions.

After the report was released, Humala visited the Plaza 2 de Mayo in Lima, where he gave a speech to his followers.

“The Peruvian people have spoken. I appreciate this demonstration and trust,” BBC Mundo quoted Humala as saying.

Humala also spoke about the challenges he’ll face and said he wouldn’t let down his country.

Are clinical trials for me?

¿Son los estudios clínicos para mí?

E

l miedo y la desconfíanza hacia los médicos, hospitales y la investigación médica podrían impedir que los hispanos participen en estudios clínicos.

Los estudios clínicos son estudios de investigación en los que la gente ayuda a los médicos a encontrar formas de mejorar la salud y el tratamiento del cáncer.

Las personas se ofrecen como voluntarias para ayudar a probar si los tratamientos nuevos son seguros y efectivos antes de que los médicos los pongan a disposición del público en general. Muchas personas que participan en ellos dicen que lo hacen porque quieren contribuir con el esfuerzo de investigación para combatir el cáncer.

Ya que la población hispana es el grupo étnico de crecimiento más rápido en los Estados Unidos y comprende una mezcla de herencias étnicas y raciales procedentes de más de 20 países, los científicos necesitan que los hispanos participen en los estudios clínicos. Si no lo hacen, la comunidad médica no puede determinar si todos los pacientes hispanos con cáncer, presentes y futuros, se beneficiarán con los avances que se están probando.

Existen varios obstáculos que puede impedir que algunos hispanos participen en los estudios clínicos. Clinical trials are research studies in which people help doctors find ways to improve healthcare and cancer care. People volunteer to help test whether new treatments are safe and effective before doctors make them available to the public.

Many people who participate in clinical trials do so because they want to contribute to the research effort to fight cancer.

Because the Hispanic population is the United States’ fastest-growing ethnic group and comprises a mix of ethnic and racial heritages from more than 20 countries, researchers need Hispanics to participate in clinical trials. If they don’t, the medical community might not be able to determine if all Hispanic cancer patients – present and future – will benefit from the advances being tested.

There are various barriers that keep some Hispanics from taking part in clinical trials.

As was mentioned, some Hispanics fear and distrust the medical community, feelings fueled in some by the legacy of enforced sterilizations that Latinas experienced before World War II in Puerto Rico.

Moreover, all the information, forms and instructions involved in clinical trials can be overwhelming, particularly for Hispanics who don’t speak English. Fortunately, clinical trial sites have Spanish-language forms and education aids available – and translators – to help patients understand consent forms and other materials.

Common Hispanic beliefs also lead many Hispanics to avoid clinical trials. For example, resignation often follows a cancer diagnosis, driven by a belief in fatalism. Some Latinas are uncomfortable receiving care from male providers. Fears of getting a placebo – or “sugar pill” – or of being used as a “guinea pig” persist, too.

University honors Salazar family Universidad honra a familia Salazar

ecientemente, una pareja del área de Kansas City fue homenajeada junto con sus hijos que son reconocidos por su éxito profesional, servicio y liderazgo en la comunidad.

El 27 de abril durante la comida de premios de ex alumnos 2011 de la Universidad de MissouriKansas City, la familia Salazar recibió el premio al Legado, que otorga la universidad y su asociación de ex alumnos. Cuando los hijos Salazar subieron al foro para aceptar el premio, ellos invitaron a Velia y Macario “Mac” Salazar para que se unieran a ellos.

Kansas City area couple who raised children distinguished by their professional success, service and leadership was recently honored as the head of a family celebrated for its school and community contributions.

On April 27 during the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) 2011 Alumni Awards luncheon, the Salazar family received the Legacy Award, conferred by the university and its alumni association. When the Salazar offspring stepped onstage to accept the award, they invited Velia and Macario “Mac” Salazar to join them.

“We wanted to make sure that the award highlighted our parents, who really instilled in us that education was the key to living the kind of lifestyle they envisioned for us,” explained Carlos, the couple’s second youngest son.

“We’re led by two important people who keep us grounded and together,” said Carlos’s younger sister, Irene Salazar Caudillo. “As matriarch and patriarch of our family, it was their inspiration that pushed us to get an education, and they’re a big part of why we went to UMKC – it was close to home, close to family.”

The Legacy Award recognizes families with a tradition of attending UMKC and their outstanding service to the university, the alumni association, their community or profession. Honorees must have a minimum of three family members representing at least two generations of alumni, no less than two of whom must be graduates. It’s one of six campuswide awards presented annually during alumni week, along with 12 alumni achievement accolades awarded by each of the university’s schools.

The Salazars are only the fifth family in the prize’s 13-year history to receive the Legacy Award. It’s a highly competitive, multi-step process, according to information provided to Dos Mundos by Laura Byerley, a senior university spokesperson.

Honorees are selected by an independent committee, typically numbering from 11 to 13 members comprising university department chairs, chairholders or other esteemed faculty and former award recipients appointed by the chancellor. Finalists are reviewed and endorsed by the alumni association and the chancellor.

“The Salazar family didn’t have just one nominator,” Byerley advised. “There were eight different people and organizations that wrote letters of nomination for them.”

Ella está estudiando una maestría en enfermería en UMKC. La pareja Salazar celebró su 65avo. aniversario en septiembre del 2010.

Tony, the second-oldest Salazar sibling, was in Los Angeles. The 1974 alumnus serves as president of West Coast operations for McCormack Baron Salazar Inc. Tony co-founded the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Development Fund and helped organize and served as executive director of the Kansas City Neighborhood Alliance.

The eldest Salazar sibling, Macario Jr., a Vietnam veteran and retired hospital CEO, completed a master’s in business administration in 1977 at UMKC. Arthur “Art” received his bachelor’s degree in 1975.

Retired as news director for KCTV (Channel 5), the CBS affiliate in Kansas City, Art sent his son Art Jr. to UMKC, where he also earned a bachelor’s degree.

Carlos, an alumni association board member heading the UMKC Hispanic Advisory Board, earned his bachelor’s degree in 1978. Carlos, who serves as area vice president of United Way of Greater Kansas City, saw his daughter, Melissa Salazar Webster, graduate in 2006 from UMKC. She’s pursuing a master’s degree in nursing at UMKC. The youngest Salazar son, Robert, a retired Kansas City, Mo., firefighter, didn’t attend UMKC. Neither did the eldest Salazar daughter, Mary Hernandez, but she saw her children graduate from there: Jesse in 1994, and Erica Hernandez-Scott and Jessica Hernandez-Luster, in 2008. Her son-in-law, Darcell Scott, attends UMKC. The second eldest Salazar daughter, Virginia Bellis, graduated in 1984.

Irene, who received a master’s in public administration in 1990 from UMKC, is director of Family Strengthening programs for Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas.

Velia and Mac Sr. instilled public-spirited values in their nine children, whose community service spans decades. Individually, they’ve befriended numerous organizations and causes. Their service includes memberships on boards of such non-profits as Sunflower House, Providence-St. John Foundation, Swope Health Services, the Partnership for Children and the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority. It also includes involvement with groups and institutions such as assorted churches, parentteacher associations, Head Start programs, area public libraries, Meals on Wheels, Amethyst Place and Newhouse.

“Our parents taught us that engaging and being part of the community means getting involved,” Irene said. “And we had to be involved to make things better.”

“We’re honored that the university acknowledged our family, but it was humbling,” Carlos said. “Our father always told us to do good and give it everything we could, but do it under the radar screen.”

Mac Sr. is a World War II U.S. Army veteran and former railroad worker who volunteered for extra shifts to put his kids through school.

“He worked as hard as he could – and in 1985 when his last kid was out of college, he retired,” Irene said.

The senior Salazars celebrated their 65th anniversary in September 2010.

This year, enthusiasm for the awards luncheon, an alumni association fund-raiser, forced a change of venue. Traditionally held on campus, the event drew more than 600 guests, so it was moved to the nearby InterContinental Kansas City at the Plaza.

“We sold out our largest on-campus luncheon venue even before we sent out invitations to the event,” Byerley said.

“Cuando la oficina regional de salud minoritaria revisó la información, la dosis de vacunas no era notable entre las minorías”, informó la Dra. Ximena Somoza del Centro de Salud Pública del condado Clay (Mo.) y del Departamento de Planeación de Políticas.

“Algunos latinos y otras minorías simplemente no estaban recibiendo la vacuna”.

Históricamente, los grupos minoritarios han tenido un número menor que las comunidades blancas con respecto a inmunizaciones. En el 2009, por ejempo, el 28% de los hispanos a nivel nacional reportaron recibir la vacuna de la gripe, mientras que casi la mitad de todos los estadounidenses blancos la recibieron. En Missouri, la disparidad fue mayor, ya que 71% de los blancos fueron inmunizados y sólo 6.4 % de los hispanos se vacunaron.

Parte de esta diferencia se atribuye al costo y disponibilidad de las vacunas, lo cual intenta cubrir la campaña “Protegiendo a todos de la gripe”. Sin embargo, gran parte se debe a la malinterpretación sobre lo que es y hace la vacuna de la gripe.

“Mucha gente piensa que la vacuna puede enfermarlos”, refirió el Dr. Edward Ellerbeck, Catedrático del Departamento de Medicina Preventiva del Centro Médico KU. “La gente se vacuna de la gripe cuando hay muchos más virus de resfriados, así que quizá tengan tos después de que se vacunen. De casualidad la gente se vacuna al mismo tiempo que se contagia con uno de estos virus poco después de vacunarse; pero es 100% absolutamente imposible contraer la gripe con la vacuna”.

Somoza, quien trabajó con la estación local de televisión Univisión para proveer anuncios de servicio público y notificar a los latinos sobre la campaña “Protegiendo a todos de la gripe”, coincide en que esa malinterpretación ha sido un gran obstáculo para los programas de inmunización.

“Una de las cosas que mencioné en la conferencia fue que necesitamos proveer más educación e información para que ellos puedan atender sus temores y malas interpretaciones”, dijo ella.

Ellerbeck señaló que la mala información se expande por todas las comunidades y niveles educativos. “Estas malas interpretaciones son más que solamente culturales. Cruzan culturas y hasta un número de gente educada.. y llega hasta a algunos de los menores niveles de enfermería”.

Somoza dijo que los programas como éste son una necesidad en la sociedad moderna a medida que crecen los grupos minoritarios en Estados Unidos. Las cifras recientes del censo demuestran que la comunidad hispana es de más de 50 millones de personas, aproximadamente 16% de la población. Poco menos de 460,000 viven en el condado Jackson, Mo.

The initiative was prompted by an irony: even with the greater availability of flu vaccines, minority groups weren’t receiving them.

“When the regional office of minority health reviewed (the) data, (the) vaccine intake was not great among minorities,” said Dr. Ximena Somoza of the Clay County (Mo.) Public Health Center Health and Policy Planning Department. “Some Latinos and other minorities just did not take (the) vaccine.”

Historically, minority groups have fared worse than white communities regarding immunization.

In 2009, for example, 28 percent of Hispanics nationwide reported getting a flu vaccine, while nearly half of all white Americans got immunized.

In Missouri, the disparity was greater, with 71 percent of whites getting immunized and only 6.4 percent of Hispanics getting vaccinated.

Some of this disparity is attributable to the vaccines’ cost and availability, which Protecting All from the Flu aims to address. However, much of it narrows down to misconceptions about what flu vaccines are and do.

“So many people think that immunizations may get you sick,” said Dr. Edward Ellerbeck, a professor in KU Medical Center’s Department of Preventative Medicine. “People are getting influenza immunizations when there a lot more cold viruses around, so they may be coughing after they get one. People, just by chance, at the same time may get one of these (cold viruses) shortly after the flu shots. But it’s absolutely 100 possible impossible to get the flu from a flu shot.”

Somoza, who worked with the local Univision station to provide public service announcements to notify Latinos about Protecting All from the Flu, agrees that misconceptions have been a major stumbling block for immunization programs.

“One of the things that I mentioned at the conference was that we need to provide more education and information, so they can address fears and misconceptions,” she said.

Ellerbeck said misinformation spans across communities and levels of education.

“These misperceptions are more than just cultural,” he said. “It goes across cultures and even to numbers of educated people – and even some of our lower-level nurses.”

Somoza said programs such as Protecting All from the Flu are a necessity in modern society as minority groups increase in the United States.

Recent census numbers show the Hispanic community at more than 50 million people, approximately 16 percent of the population. Slightly less than 460,000 live in Jackson County, Mo. One such office is the FEC’s location on The Paseo in Kansas City, Mo. The office is located near Independence Avenue in the Northeast neighborhood, which has a growing Hispanic community.

No doubt, the unemployment rate for Hispanics has led to more Hispanics seeking help from the FEC and other organizations. Overall, unemployment in the United States has steadily declined from the beginning of 2010, when it was 10.6 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). However, as of April of this year, national unemployment remained around 9 percent, with the Kansas City area reporting 8.9 percent and Missouri reporting 9.1 percent.

For Hispanics, the unemployment rate has been higher than the national, state and local averages since 2010. Nationally, the unemployment rate for Hispanics in 2010 was 12.5 percent, although that number fluctuated dramatically with the seasonal labor flow. In December of 2010, the unemployment rate among Hispanics was 13 percent, which was followed by a sudden drop from that level to 11.9 percent in January.

In April, the BLS reported that more than one out of every 10 Hispanics remained out of work.

The jobless rate for Hispanics in April was 11.8 percent.

TambiĂŠn la forma en que te vistes, maquillas, peinas y hasta los accesorios que usas envĂ­an un mensaje. Por eso, asegĂşrate de que tu imagen envĂ­a el mensaje de: â€œÂĄyo soy una lĂ­der!â€?. Quieras o no, tu apariencia es uno de los factores que determina cĂłmo otros te perciben.

Minnesota caps four-game sweep with shutout

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost considered the Royalsʼ 6-0 loss Sunday (June 5) to the Minnesota Twins at Kauffman Stadium the end of a four-game butt-kicking.

“They came in, they werenʼt playing great baseball and they found a way to kick our butt (in) four straight (games),” Yost said during Sundayʼs postgame press conference.

Based on the numbers, the Twins found at least two ways to administer their butt-kicking. One was with their offense.

Despite having what Yost called “kind of a mix-and-match lineup,” the Twins outscored the Royals 26-6 during the series, which began with Minnesotaʼs 8-2 victory June 2 and continued with Minnesota winning 5-2 June 3 and 7-2 June 4. Minnesota finished off Kansas City Sunday by putting up three first-inning runs, adding a fourth on Jason Repkoʼs sixth-inning RBI single and getting a two-run, one-out, ninth-inning triple from Matt Tolbert.

Another way was with pitching. Brian Duensing and Matt Capps threw a combined shutout to complete the sweep Sunday and hand the Royals their third shutout this season. However, Duensing wasnʼt

thinking about a possible sweep when he started the game.

“Iʼve been scuffling (struggling), myself, for a long time,” said Duensing, who threw a six-hitter, struck out four and walked in eight innings to improve to 3-5.

Duensingʼs struggles and an admittedly poor pregame warmup session made him feel “really nervous about the way things were going to go,” he said.

“I couldnʼt throw a strike,” Duensing said of his warmup session.

“I didnʼt know where the ball was going. My offspeed (pitch) was up in the (strike) zone. I tried throwing the ball in, it would go out.

(I) tried to throw the ball out, it would go out even farther.”

Duensing didnʼt consider a possible sweep “until after the eighth inning,” he said. Capps made that possibility a reality by striking out one batter and holding the Royals to one hit in the ninth inning to complete the shutout.

Even with the sweep, the Twins remained in last place in the American League Central Division and had the worst record in the major leagues. Meanwhile, the Royals were in fourth place in the American League Central, 3½ games ahead of Minnesota, and had lost 17 of 22 games when they began a four-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays Monday (June 6) at Kauffman.

Colombian a frontrunner before placing 17th at STP 400

To NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya, there are two keys to being a top contender in professional auto racing.

One key is to finish – or as Montoya put it during his recent trip to the Kansas City area, to “bring the car home every week.”

Another is to “get results.”

The native Colombian got his car through the STP 400 Sunday (June 5) at Kansas Speedway. But considering where he started and his position late in the race, his finish – or result – might not have been what he had expected.

Montoya had the No. 2 qualifying time for the 400-mile, 267-lap NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and thus started in the second position out of 43 cars. He led briefly early and was a top 10 contender late in the race. However, he finished 17th, one lap behind champion Brad Keselowski.

Based on his June 4 prerace press conference comments, Montoya was counting on a strong finish Sunday to help him contend for a NASCAR championship this season.

Other results: The STP 400 was one of two NASCAR races held over the weekend (June 3-5) at the speedway. On June 4, native Kansan Clint Bowyer won the OʼReilly Auto Parts 250.

Bowyer led for 124 laps of the 250-mile, 167-lap NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. Drivers who led briefly included native Brazilian Miguel Paludo. Paludo, who started 15th in the 36-truck field and finished 13th, led for one lap.

For the few laps Bowyer trailed, he had one thought: try to pass the trucks ahead of him.

“Thatʼs the only strategy you can do,” Bowyer commented during his postrace press conference. “Youʼve got to be able to go out there and be able to pass cars.”
