The Zetas,” who are considered by some authorities to be among the most dangerous Mexican drug cartels, are allegedly responsible for 27 deaths in Guatemala. On May 14, a group of farm workers were taken to “Los Cocos” in Guatemala to work. Later, a group arrived and started killing them one by one. On the Web site “El Blog del Narco” (“Narcotics Blog”), a survivor stated: “Thanks to God, I’m alive. I made them think I was dead – and when I went out to look for help, I found a lot of heads on the floor.” The witness also estimated that between 30 and 40 people did the killings. In December, congressional opponents, asserting that it would reward unlawful behavior, narrowly defeated the 2010 incarnation of the DREAM Act. The House passed the bill by a vote of 55-41, but it failed in the Senate, 56-43. While the DREAM Act has remained stalled at the federal level, several states have enacted legislation – also popularly referred to as “DREAM Act” – but different in that states can’t grant legal status or U.S. citizenship. The state versions of the DREAM Act allow undocumented students who meet certain criteria to pay in-state tuition at state colleges and universities. Maryland became the 11th state to pass such legislation. The state’s governor signed the bill into law on May 11. Kansas and nine other states have passed laws extending college tuition breaks to illegal immigrants that have so far survived court challenges. They are California, Illinois, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. A similar bill (S.B. 126) in Colorado was defeated in April. Immigrant advocacy groups, insisting that the DREAM Act would strengthen the nation’s economy and military cheered the renewed push in Congress for passage. In a statement released on May 11, the National Council of La Raza called it a commonsense measure that would allow the U.S. to capitalize on the “extraordinary academic abilities” and talent of students who were raised here. “It would be a tribute to American values of fairness and equal opportunity … that will help our nation grow,” announced the American Civil Liberties Union on the same day. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are some 2.5 million undocumented immigrants under age 18 residing in the U.S. that could benefit if Congress approves the DREAM Act. President Obama has indicated that he supports such legislation and would sign it. Durbin’s bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on immigration, chaired by Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York. The 11-member panel doesn’t include senators from Kansas or Missouri. Three House committees are considering H.R. 1842. They are the Judiciary Committee with 37 members, led by Rep. Smith of Texas; the 22-member Education and Workforce committee, chaired by Rep. John Kline from Minnesota; and the 31-member Homeland Security committee, chaired by Rep. Peter King from New York. No representatives from the local delegations sit on any of the House committees. The bills have not yet had hearings. None of the 33 senators who have so far signed on as co-sponsors of S.952 or the 10 representatives cosponsoring H.R. 1842 are from Kansas or Missouri. With bin Laden dead, Obama can recoup the widespread popularity he enjoyed just after his election. Obama – who did in two years what former President George W. Bush couldn’t accomplish in eight – isn’t likely to be accused of being weak on national security. *Hits and misses in the media: Obama’s nationally televised speech to announce bin Laden’s death, delivered late on May 1, was viewed by about 56 million people. It was the most viewed presidential speech in a decade. Ironically, bin Laden’s killing, a major event for the news media, served as an epitaph for printed newspapers. A Pakistani Twitter user, Sohaib Athar, was the ďŹ rst person to tell the world about the U.S. operation against al Qaeda’s leader – and the story spread from there. Traditional newspapers couldn’t react quickly enough: The editions of The New York Times and the Spanish newspaper El Pais that I received the morning of May 2 didn’t include any reporting on bin Laden’s death. They couldn’t seem to modify their editions in the six hours they had, which is probably why many traditional newspapers are dying. *The legalities: Killing bin Laden was of symbolic value only, although that value was tremendous. Obviously, the mission wasn’t carried out with strict adherence to international laws. In December 2001, I was in the Tora Bora Mountains in Afghanistan, where U.S. troops had cornered bin Laden. But he somehow got away. Many years passed before the military picked up his trail again. It’s likely that information about the identity of bin Laden’s trusted courier (who unknowingly led the U.S. military to the compound in Abbottabad, where bin Laden was hiding) was obtained through the use of torture. We know that after Sept. 11, 2001, the United States subjected several prisoners to an “interrogation techniqueâ€? called waterboarding. Authorized by the Bush administration, but branded as torture by Obama after he was elected president in 2008, this technique might have yielded the ďŹ rst clues of bin Laden’s whereabouts. Legally obtained or not, that information was used. The covert raid to kill or capture bin Laden – carried out by 79 U.S. Navy SEALs – was initiated without the Pakistani government’s knowledge. There’s a pattern here. Look at the controversial “Fast and Furiousâ€? operation, initiated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in 2009 and carried out without notiďŹ cation to Mexican President Felipe Calderon’s administration. Conclusion: When the United States decides its national security is at stake, it doesn’t request permission, nor does it recognize territorial boundaries. *Immigration reform: By killing thousands of Americans in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, bin Laden altered the lives of everyone in this country, including those of immigrants. A few days before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Bush and President Vicente Fox of Mexico had agreed to negotiate an immigration reform accord between the United States and Mexico. But the terrorist attacks abruptly ended that commitment and made life impossible for immigrants. What a group of foreign terrorists did that day changed the course of the immigration debate in this country and sparked suspicions against recent arrivals to the United States. To this day, a path to legalization for 11 million undocumented immigrants is blocked, as fears of another terrorist attack have focused on recent immigrants. Bin Laden is dead, and there’s still much to be done. We need to rebuild, to recover. But President Obama, through a bold, successful gamble, restored Americans’ conďŹ dence that, eventually, justice is done. As he said during a visit to New York days after bin Laden had been killed: “When we say we will never forget, we mean what we say.â€?

A resident of Kansas City, Kan.’s Argentine neighborhood, Hernandez also is active in community events. MYTH: Undocumented immigrants are getting government ser vices for free. REALITY: They actually give more than they take. Over the past two decades, most studies that have tried to estimate the ďŹ scal impact of immigration in the United States have concluded that the tax revenue generated by immigrants —both legal and undocumented— exceeds the cost of the services they use. Thus, an Economic Report of the President published in 2005 estimated that all immigrants, regardless of status, paid on average US$80,000 per capita more in taxes than the cost of the government services they were expected to use over their lifetime. Stephen C. Goss, the chief actuary of the Social Security Administration, said that by 2007, the Social Security trust fund had received a net beneďŹ t of somewhere between US$120 billion and US$240 billion from undocumented immigrants. That represented 5.4% to 10.7% of the trust fund’s total assets of US$2.24 trillion that year. The Social Security Administration estimates that two-thirds of unauthorized immigrant workers (about 5.6 million people) were paying into the system in 2007. Unauthorized immigrants paid a net contribution of US$12 billion in 2007 alone.

Mexico’s El Universal newspaper reports that his parents came to the United States from Guanajuato, a city in central Mexico Mejia enlisted in the military in 2005 at a California military base. After spending seven months in Afghanistan, he joined the SEALs. On May 1, he saw bin Laden’s corpse as it was carried out of the building where he was killed. Mejia’s father Martin, a machine operator, recalled the moment that service members in uniform came to his home in Los Angeles, holding a folded ag. “It was one of the biggest scares,â€? Mejia’s father recalled. “When they saw us (family members) begin to cry, they clariďŹ ed that bringing the ag was an expression of recognition and honor because our son had carried out a great mission for our nation.â€? Mejia is a part of a long line of Latinos who’ve served in the U.S. military. However, for a long time, Latinos were underrepresented in the armed forces. That changed when the Army began aggressively recruiting young Latinos. In addition, several military experts have come out in support of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, which would legalize undocumented young people who go to college or serve in the military, because it would signiďŹ cantly increase the pool of qualiďŹ ed Latino recruits. The Latino population comprises the majority of undocumented immigrants and is more likely to enlist and serve in the military than any other group. On the other hand, the growing number of Latino recruits has raised some concerns. In 2007, casualties among Latino soldiers in Iraq ranked the highest compared to other minority groups. In fact, Marine Lance Cpl. Jose Gutierrez — an orphan who made the 2,000-mile journey from Guatemala City to the United States at age 14 — was among the ďŹ rst U.S. service members killed in combat in Iraq. Many also claim that Latinos are being left out of the military’s highest ranks. “In the last 75 years, there have been only three (Latino) ofďŹ cers on active duty with three stars and just one with four,â€? retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez stated in 2010. “What’s the problem? We’re as capable, competent and educated as any other segment of society.â€?

n May 9 and 10, Mexican President, Felipe Calderon Hinojosa O visited the United States to promote
Mexico to investors and to receive two awards. During the two-day visit, Calderon met with various Hispanic leaders in New York, where the Mexican community presented its problems. He also met with investors and U.S. politicians, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada. Reid issued the following press statement recognizing Calderon’s efforts at battling Mexican drug cartels: “We reiterated to President Calderon our unwavering support and look forward to continued work with Mexico and its people.â€? Calderon also received the 2011 Champions of the Earth Award from the United Nations for his commitment to developing green initiatives. In addition, he received the Foreign Policy Leadership Award from the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI). As quoted in a CHLI press release, Lincoln Diaz-Balart, CHLI board chairman stated: “We are honored to salute and recognize President Felipe Calderon of Mexico for his courageous ďŹ ght for the rule of law in his country. President Calderon has earned the admiration of all Hispanics.â€?

onald Rael, a University of California, Berkeley professor, has created a project that would allow for the use of the wall at the U.S.Mexican border in ways that would beneďŹ t both countries. The project is designed to make the wall into a multipurpose wall. Some of the services proposed by Rael include solar energy and rainwater collection. In addition, Rael is proposing a library to promote education and a food establishment. Rael was quoted in El Universal Newspaper stating that, 100 kilometers of the wall with solar panels could produce energy for 107,000 households. The panels would be located atop the wall and be connected to help with rainwater collection. Rael said the food establishment could be a good idea, provided the proper authorities regulate it. Many people in Mexico have criticized the establishment of the wall, arguing it separates both nations and even creates tension between them.

Wind energy could create huge numbers of jobs in the Midwest.” It also would likely be less expensive than producing nuclear weapons. “If we were spending a small percentage of what we’re spending on nuclear (power) for renewable energies, we could become leaders in green power,” said Huet-Vaughn. “If we would be (a) nuclear power plant location, we (would) make ourselves a target.” Moreover, the KC Peace Planters claim the complex deal between Kansas City and private developers is more of a reason to – at the least – bring this up for a vote. In a deal described as “byzantine” in the 2008 suit, the Kansas City Planned Industrial Expansion Authority (PIEA) has taxpayers footing $500 million of the initial investment for the buildings and $1.2 billion over the next 20 years for infrastructure maintenance. “The financial maneuver that puts future federal taxpayers on the hook for this supposedly ‘private’ venture is GSA’s 20-year ‘firm’ capital lease,” said Christopher Paine, nuclear program director for the Natural Resources Defense Council. The city attorney and PIEA offices could not be reached for comment.

Bob and Ruth formed an advertising and marketing agency called Lewellen and Lewellen. He was a long-time active member of the Kansas City Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees). He also founded and chaired the Miss Kansas City Pageant and, in the early 1960Ęźs, the Midwest Semi-Pro Football League. He received many honors

Once you met Bob, you became his new friend and he always did whatever he could to help his friends in need. He embodied and embraced the true meaning of friendship. He was considered an icon of the community by his friends and business contacts throughout our city. Bob was a loving and devoted son, brother, uncle, husband, father, and grandfather. He is preceded in death by his parents, Loretta Rose (Kelling) Lewellen and Joseph Virgil Lewellen and his wife Ruth Ann (Bewalda) Lewellen. He is survived by his sisters Kathryn Ann (Lewellen) Phillips and her husband Edward Phillips of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and Carol Lewellen, of Kansas City, Missouri, sons Joseph, Christopher, and Andrew Lewellen, of Kansas City, Missouri, and their respective wives Heather, Lori, and Victoria. He was a beloved “Bob Bobâ€? to 8 grandchildren. His family and friends will miss him beyond measure. DescripciĂłn: Si la ve en video en casa, como lo hice yo, entonces es un argumento para dividirla en capĂtulos, para que pueda dar entrada a las partes buenas del DVD o Blu-ray. En el caso de este drama histĂłrico, las partes buenas no llegan sino hasta casi el minuto 45 de los 117 que dura. Los primeros 45 minutos o algo asĂ de esta dramatizaciĂłn de la vida de San Josemaria Escriva de Balageur, narrada a travĂŠs de una crĂłnica de su relaciĂłn con Manolo Torres, es lenta en el mejor de los casos y en el peor adormecedora. Eso es desafortunado ya que la cinematografĂa de Gabriel Beristain brinda imĂĄgenes nĂtidas y romĂĄnticas de la EspaĂąa de principios del siglo XX. En vez de ser atrayentes, esas imĂĄgenes sirven como una distracciĂłn ocasional del ritmo lento y una narraciĂłn mediocre. It also serves up an emotionally moving ďŹ nal act, in which the ailing Manolo talks with his estranged son Robert. During its ďŹ nal 10 or 20 minutes, it poses challenging questions about religion and spirituality. Should I see it?: If you can wait until it reaches home video and watch it with a church group, then yes. Its spiritual themes (redemption, the relationship between religion and war) make it ideal for ministers to show their congregations and then discuss. If, however, you want to see it at to your local multiplex, then the answer is no â&#x20AC;&#x201C; unless you want to make a few trips to the concession stand to while away the sluggish ďŹ rst half. Besides, screenings are limited. On Sunday (May 15,) for example, AMC Independence (Mo.) Commons 20 had only a 12:40 p.m. screening, as I learned through an Internet search. You also shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see it if you plan to watch it alone on home video â&#x20AC;&#x201C; unless you do something I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t: cue it up to about the 45-minute mark and watch the rest of it.

AC: ¿Cuál es tu sentir de que no haya otra atleta con tus mismas características? AG: No sabes la impotencia que me da y también el compromiso que me deja, porque no dejo de tener ese compromiso de seguir buscando cómo poder generar y cómo poder hacer que no se pierda, porque el talento ahí está en nuestro país. AC: Ana esa impotencia nos da a todos pero ¿tienen más actitud los brasileños y los cubanos, que los mexicanos? AG: Es una cuestión de actitud y una cuestión de sistema. El caso nuestro, es que estamos contaminados de fútbol. Lo único que vemos es fútbol, no vemos otra cosa y no tenemos otros ejemplos. En mi momento le logré robar un poquito de espectáculo al fútbol. Must work effectively with partner and contractor organizations to ensure an effective and quality workforce system for youth with measurable results. Bachelor’s degree with extensive experience in a lead staff position, managing staff and /or leading programs with specific efforts in employment and training initiatives with focus on working with urban, economically disadvantaged youth. Must have reliable personal transportation-local and state travel may be required. “Kipp was our school,” parent Cherise Ellison said. “It’s disheartening to be on this side of the table after four years of volunteer effort.” Citing a long list of issues, including funds mismanagement, dissatisfaction with communication from the administration and an unqualified teaching staff, parents met to glean answers and explanations for the shortcomings. One issues discussed was the loss of some Title 1 funds. Kipp had applied for and received a Title 1 grant. The funds are awarded annually, but only disbursed if a school has established programs for professional improvement, parental involvement and overall improvement. Because Kipp didn’t have those implements in place, the school will lose $122,000 in Title 1 funds. Meyer said that was because of a lack of preparation from the previous administration. “This is carryover funding that we simply didn’t get,” Meyer said. “We didn’t lose it. The previous administration had no plan to deal with Title 1 funding. We didn’t want to throw something together and be found out of compliance.” Parent representative Marisol Montero asserted that could’ve been avoided. Knowing there would be requirements Kipp would have to satisfy to secure the money, she made repeated attempts to contact the school to ensure it would meet the conditions. “I’ve sent several e-mails over the last four months,” Montero said. “I wanted to review their plan. Come to find out, they didn’t have it. They were telling me they didn’t know about (the Title 1 funding requirements) until September.” Montero also pointed out that Carl Pelofsky, whom Meyer replaced as principal, left Meyer with a strategy for accessing the funds, which Meyer neglected. Parents also raised concerns about the scholarships that weren’t disbursed to eighth-graders who would advance from Kipp to private institutions. A major roadblock to the disbursement was a lack of administrative support for the high school placement coordinator. Meyer allegedly played a role in that shortcoming. When Kipp needed a science teacher, instead of hiring a replacement teacher, the administration filled the position of teaching science to seventh- and eight-graders with a group of three staff members: an English teacher, a sociology specialist and the coordinator, who also is a math instructor. As a result, few scholarships were administered. Most Kipp students who’ve been accepted into private institutions will have to pay for them out of pocket or re-enroll in Kansas City, Mo.’s public schools. “The board did not give us the best principal,” Montero said. “This one did not know anything about administration skills. And who has been totally left out? The children. Who is going to make up for that?” Additionally, parent-teacher relationships have soured since the disbanding of the Kipp Parents Association in January, a decision made because of the negative tone of the meetings. Ellison related an incident where her student was reprimanded by having points taken off his schoolwork for misbehaving. “What he told me was that he had to get his attention, so he took points off his quiz,” Ellison said. “(He said), ‘Because your son does not care, I had to get his attention some way’”. Meyer asserts the school is moving forward. “Obviously, with Title 1, we are working to ensure we have all those pieces in place,” she said. “Working really closely with DESE (Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education special education funds), (we plan) to have that school-wide by the beginning of the next school year.” School officials met May 10 at MCC Pioneer Campus, 2700 E. 18th. St. in KCMO, to discuss the next step for the charter school. After convening, the Kipp Board motioned to accept the resignation of Peter Ho as Board Chair, and Kristie Meyer as Principal. Anthony Williams was nominated as the new Chair. No new nominations were made for Principal. The board will be interviewing candidates to replace Meyer, whose resignation is effective June 30.
