n Nov. 9, Missouri Supreme Court justices heard oral arguments in an adoption appeal case and sharply questioned attorneys representing citizens of two countries. The case involves a 4-year-old boy born in the United States, the Carthage, Mo., couple who adopted him and the boy’s Guatemalan birth mother. Encarnacion Bail Romero, the birth mother, is seeking to overturn a court decision terminating her parental rights and the subsequent adoption of her child. Her attorneys claim that adoption laws weren’t strictly followed and Romero was denied due process rights. Melinda and Seth Moser of Carthage in southwest Missouri are ﬁghting to keep the child. Kansas City police aren’t in the business of enforcing federal immigration laws. That was the message Maj. olleges and universities are cautioning students about online profiles they’re creating on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace: Potential employers might be surfing the Internet to vet job applicants. In 2008, Careerbuilder.com conducted a survey of 31,000 employers. One-fourth revealed they explore social networking sites “to screen candidates.” One-third disclosed that damaging search results led to eliminating candidates. Last May, a 22-year-old Charlotte, N.C., college student got fired from a job she “really liked.” On her Facebook page, she’d vilified customers she’d served in the well-paying restaurant gig. It violated company policy. Someone showed the student’s Facebook rant to her boss. In early October, a 22-year-old Kansas City woman complained to the police that she’d been assaulted. Her assailant had allegedly used a box cutter to slash the word “hoe” on her chest. The woman told police she’d connected with a man on an online dating site. She gave him her home address, so he could pick her up for their first date. The woman then accompanied the stranger to an hourly-rate motel and got drunk. Before eventually passing out, she told police she had argued with the man over sex and he had left. When she awoke, she found her clothes torn and her chest cut. An advantage of socializing online is the extent of anonymity, and therefore, relative safety it offers. But there are caveats. Employers are likely to be researching job applicants on search engines. Disparaging an employer online is just as public as standing in front of the business waving signs attacking it. Posters who disclose their personal identification to strangers online forfeit anonymity. Employers canvassed by Careerbuilder.com revealed the most damning information their online searches of job seekers yielded. They included drug or alcohol use, inappropriate photos or information, poor communication skills and maligning former employers. They also included misrepresenting or lying about qualifications, unprofessional screen names, criminal behavior and confidential information about a former employer. It’s almost impossible to remove an unflattering entry from a search engine. Career management consultants advise job seekers to search their own name online and create a positive professional identity through Internet sites such as LinkedIn, Google profiles and ZoomInfo. Don’t assume the privacy setting ensures protection. The Charlotte college student’s Facebook network had 100 “friends only” – all people she knew personally. To international investigators tracking Internet attacks, sophisticated programmers have created a “wilderness of mirrors.” Many people, however, lack the expertise to ensure absolute anonymity. Injudicious, intemperate postings and pejorative personal commentary command a semi-permanent place in cyberspace. Finally, privacy safeguards can’t protect someone who volunteers confidential information to strangers. Exercise common sense when using social networking and online dating sites. Identify yourself with a nickname, not your real name. Withhold identifiers – address, place of employment, phone number. Get to know the person online before speaking on the phone. Ask the person for his number and block caller ID, so the man can’t use it to obtain your phone number. Over time, if you decide to meet, pick a public place and use your own transportation. Tell a friend or family member where you’re going and the name and phone number of the person you’re meeting. The Internet offers connections to a world of information and people who share our interests. Stalking those sites are predators and cyberspies. It pays to be careful and aware.

Shipment of prosthetic limbs heads to Port-au-Prince HIALEAH, Fla. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Three months after the Knights of Columbus announced it would donate $1 million to Project Medishare to provide prostheses to Haitian children who had lost limbs in the January earthquake, a large shipment of the prosthetic devices is being sent to Port-au-Prince. During a recent news conference at the Hialeah, Fla., facility where the prosthetic devices were being prepared for shipment, representatives of the organizations involved expressed enthusiasm for the difference that the Hope for Haitiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Children program will make in the amputeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lives. The Knights of Columbus has agreed to underwrite the cost of the prostheses and therapy for children who needed them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bringing the gift of mobility and independence to these children is an important investment in their lives â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and through them, in Haitiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future,â&#x20AC;? said Emilio Moore, Knights of Columbus supreme secretary. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(The) Knights of Columbus, for whom charity and helping neighbors in need is a fundamental commitment, is honored to be able to help make this possible.â&#x20AC;? The children will be supplied with up to three prostheses (as they outgrow them) and two years of physical therapy. as elecciones intermedias han demostrado el poder del voto latino a lo largo de Estados Unidos. Y en este poder hay algo nuevo. Los hispanos integran el 15% de la poblaciĂłn de la naciĂłn, y si bien no tenemos aĂşn la representaciĂłn polĂtica que merecemos, mĂĄs polĂticos latinos asumirĂĄn el cargo en enero. HabrĂĄ 24 congresistas hispanos en el Congresoâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;uno mĂĄs que antesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;y Estados Unidos tambiĂŠn tendrĂĄ dos gobernadores y dos senadores latinos. Lo interesante, sin embargo, es que la mayorĂa de los hispanos que obtuvieron la victoria el 2 de noviembre no estĂĄn comprometidos con la defensa de los inmigrantes indocumentados â&#x20AC;&#x201C; son mĂĄs conservadores. Hispanics comprise 15 percent of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and although we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t yet have the political representation we deserve, more Latino politicians will take ofďŹ ce in January 2001. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be 24 Hispanic lawmakers in Congress, one more than before; and the United States also will have two Latino governors and two senators. But interestingly, most of the Hispanics who claimed victory on Nov. 2 arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t committed to the defense of undocumented immigrants; they are more conservative. This is new. The United States has moved to the right, and so have many Latino politicians â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including a new generation of Hispanic Republicans who support measures that essentially attack undocumented immigrants. Not too long ago, most Latinos in ofďŹ ce defended immigrants, whether they were here legally or not. For decades, this has been a tradition followed by members of both political parties. For evidence, look to the efforts of the three Cubanborn Republican congressional lawmakers of Florida: Lincoln Diaz-Balart, Mario Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ross-Lehtinen. All are working hard for national immigration reform. But this honorable, generous custom of ďŹ ghting for immigrant rights is ending. So many of the new Hispanic Republicans about to take their seats in Congress and move into governorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mansions based their campaigns on going after the undocumented. *Susana Martinez, the ďŹ rst Hispanic woman to win a governorship in the United States, wants to deprive undocumented immigrants of their ability to get driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s licenses in New Mexico. She said she would revoke those already issued. *Brian Sandoval, Nevadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newly elected governor, has declared on his Web site (www. briansandoval.com) that he opposes amnesty for undocumented immigrants, opposes issuing driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s licenses to them and favors imposing additional penalties on employers who hire them. *Unlike his predecessor Mel Martinez, Marco Rubio, the newly elected senator from Florida, doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t support amnesty for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States. He also has said the children of undocumented immigrants, who have spent most of their lives in the United States, shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be allowed to stay. *Five new Republican congressmen â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Jaime Herrera of Washington, Francisco Canseco and Bill Flores of Texas, Rafael Labrador of Idaho, and David Rivera of Florida â&#x20AC;&#x201C; campaigned on everything from tightening the U.S.-Mexican border to taking away the few meager beneďŹ ts allowed to the undocumented. While one might assume this new wave of Hispanic Republicans won their seats with the help of Hispanic voters, this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t true. On Nov. 2 most Latino voters cast ballots for Democrats (64 percent), rather than Republicans (34 percent), according to data from the Pew Hispanic Center. The numbers are similar to those of the 2008 election, in which President Barack Obama won the Hispanic vote (67 percent), trouncing Republican John McCain (31 percent). It seems this new generation of conservative politicians was elected because non-Hispanic voters were persuaded they were the best candidates for the job, regardless of ethnicity. In fact, enthusiasm for some of these newly elected Republicans is so strong that Florida Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart told me in an interview that Rubio might one day be a candidate for vice president â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or even president. It is, indeed, a new day for Latinos in politics. P.S.: In an Election Day surprise, Senate leader Harry Reid of Nevada won his re-election bid thanks to Hispanic voters who supported the Democrat over Republican Sharron Angle, 68 percent to 30 percent. Now is the moment for Reid to fulďŹ ll his campaign promise to submit the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act to the Senate before January. The future of at least 800,000 undocumented youths and adults depends on Reid being true to his word. This is an issue that must be on the table when President Obama meets with the Republican leadership Thursday (Nov. 18). Without the presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s support, the DREAM Act cannot be realized.

Latino Republicans combined support from conservatives and Latino voters to win two new governorships, four new House seats and a new Senate seat, more than doubling the number of Republican Hispanics in Congress and giving the United States three Republican Hispanic governors for the ﬁrst time. But even as Republicans made big gains with other voters, overall Latino voter turnout continued to lean Democratic. According to MSNBC exit polling in key battleground House races, Latino voters comprised 8 percent of those races and favored Democrats over Republicans by 65 percent to 33 percent. “The elections of 2010 are further proof of the power of the Latino vote,” stated Margaret Moran, national president, League of United Latin American Citizens. “No longer can politicians afford to ignore the needs of their fastest growing constituency. Latino voters have demonstrated that they are paying close attention to the issues that matter most to their families and their communities and they are prepared to support the candidates who respond to their concerns.” In Nevada, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid was re-elected with overwhelming support from Latinos, who turned out in large numbers to beat back challenger Sharon Angle, whose anti-immigrant attack ads angered Latino voters statewide. According to exit polling by MSNBC, Latinos comprised 15 percent of the Nevada vote, with 68 percent of Latino voters supporting Reid. In Florida, Republican Marco Rubio was elected to the U.S. Senate with 55 percent of the Latino vote in a state where Hispanics comprised 12 percent of the vote, according to the exit poll. In addition, Republican David Rivera defeated Democrat Joe Garcia in the state’s closely-watched 25th District. Republican Susana Martinez made history in

The Spanish-language radio stops its regular transmissions on Nov. 10. What Super X founder Pablo Ramirez and his staff accomplished until then was beyond what they had expected. Ramirez created a new voice for the area’s Spanish-speaking community. Ramirez is an area radio pioneer. He started doing translations on the radio with Lupe Quintana and worked with Michael G. Later on Ramirez decided to open a radio station called “La Super X”. La Super X was unique because of the character and joy of its disc jockeys (DJs). Its DJs, including La Jarochita, Armando Cruz and Juan Carlos Ballesteros, were company to a lot of people in the area every morning and afternoon. Each DJ had the opportunity to say “see you later,” to La Super X’s audience. On Nov. 10, when saying good-bye, the DJs thanked their listeners for their time and support. “I consider this a season,” Ballesteros said. In addition, La Super X should be remembered for its great ability to travel over hundreds of miles in Missouri and Kansas. Spanishspeaking people from small towns in Kansas and Missouri listened to 1250 AM as a medium of connection to their roots and traditions. During its history, La Super X went through many economic difﬁculties and defeated many challenges. Nevertheless, La Super X struggled to keep an audience and was hit by the ongoing international economic crisis, as has been the case with many media organizations in the country. Even though Super X’s season is over, many surprises are in store for the Spanish-language radio listening community. Hispanic radio will grow and continue to position itself within the area’s overall radio community, and a new administration is getting ready to launch a remodeled concept of Spanish radio.

three years of high school in California and graduate from a California high school are eligible for in-state tuition rates at California public colleges and universities, regardless of immigration status. The court found that federal law didn’t bar California from offering tuition equality to students. California is among 10 states to grant tuition equality to its students. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) ﬁled a friend-of-the-court brief in the case, Martinez v. Regents of the University of California, along with the National Immigration Law Center, the ACLU of Northern California, the ACLU of Southern California and the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties. “The court correctly rejected a misguided and politically-motivated campaign that attacked the state’s education policy and tried to stiﬂe the hopes and intellectual ambitions of the students of California,” said Lucas Guttentag, director of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project. “This lawsuit and similar lawsuits in other states are shortsighted, mean-spirited and driven purely by politics. We hope the court’s decision will send an unmistakable message that dedicated college students should not be used as pawns for political purposes.”

The court could award custody to Romero, who’s being deported, or the Mosers; or it could return the case to the trial court level. In July, a state appeals court ruled in Romero’s favor, overturning the earlier trial court decision giving the Mosers custody. Federal authorities granted Romero’s request to delay her deportation until the case is resolved. As a convicted felon and someone who’s in the United States illegally for the second time, she won’t be able to return. According to court records, Romero was found to be in the country illegally in 2005 and deported. In May 2006, she returned illegally. Four months later, she gave birth to a baby boy – the child whose custody is being argued. When the baby was 7 months old, Romero was arrested and charged with several federal criminal offenses. She’d been among 136 workers at a Butterﬁeld, Mo., poultry processing plant detained on May 22, 2007, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents investigating identity theft, the use of stolen Social Security numbers and document falsiﬁcation. In October 2007, Romero pled guilty to aggravated identity theft. A federal judge sentenced her to two years in a federal prison, followed by deportation. At the time of her arrest, Romero and her infant were living with Romero’s brother and his wife. The brother handed Romero’s baby over to a sister, who gave the infant to an unrelated family in Carthage. They found a stable home for the baby with Melinda and Seth Moser, who were willing to care for him long term. In 2008, a judge ruled Romero had abandoned her infant and terminated her parental rights, and the Mosers adopted the child. In February 2009, Romero was released from federal prison in West Virginia. She hasn’t seen the child since he was 7 months old, although he lives nearby with his adoptive parents. Whether she’s attempted to see him is disputed by attorneys on both sides. Romero’s attorneys claim she never abandoned her baby and the parental termination and adoption hearings violated her due process rights. They took place while Romero was imprisoned without appropriate legal representation and were conducted in English, which she doesn’t understand. Attorneys for the Mosers contend that Romero didn’t care for the boy properly while she had him. They cited several health issues. They also pointed out that Romero’s arguments suggest the case to Romero is about her rights, not what’s best for the child.

Around 12 a.m. on Oct. 25, detectives from Kansas City’s vice and gang squads with ICE agents conducted a “tavern check” at the nightclub located at 2805 Southwest Blvd. On his Internet blog, Police Chief Jim Corwin wrote that about 100 people were in the club. He cited 28 violations charged against a club owner and employees and clubgoers. The owner was arrested for allowing underage drinking. Four minors were arrested for underage drinking. One man was arrested for assaulting police. Three unlicensed security guards were arrested for not being licensed. One security guard was armed and had crack cocaine. Three patrons were arrested for drug possession. ICE agents took into custody 13 people in the United States illegally who had committed felonies in the past, four people with outstanding deportation warrants and three people under deportation proceedings for a criminal history. “Maj. Stewart said they’ve been trying to close down Club Oasis because of the high crime volume. It was making Southwest Boulevard dangerous, but they don’t want the community to get farther away from police,” Soto said. “Their mission wasn’t to cite illegal immigrants but to clean house.” Area merchants aren’t mourning the demise of nightclub, but they’re ruing another challenge to surviving in a tough economy. Business is down. “The Boulevard has lost customers,” Soto said. “They’re afraid of getting pulled over. And if anything gets out of hand and the cops come, it could lead to deportation. The Association is also worried about something happening that a victim won’t report. Maj. Stewart was there to reassure people and remind the community to call police if they’re the victim of a crime.” Since May 2009, police have responded to 167 calls at or near the nightclub for shootings, fights, thefts and traffic obstructions. La Monte hosts Noche Latina La Monte organiza Noche Latina

l 12 de Nov., la preparatoria de La Monte E (Mo.) organizĂł su segunda Noche Latina en el gimnasio de la escuela. La maestra de InglĂŠs como Segundo Idioma, Melissa Lackey organizĂł el evento para incluir a la comunidad hispana en las actividades escolares. Cerca de 60 personas asistieron al evento. El dinero recabado por la Noche Latina se utilizarĂĄ para apoyar los eventos del Club de EspaĂąol de la escuela. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Si bien, el dinero no es importante, es por ello que solamente cobramos una pequeĂąa cuota para entrar y otra por la comida. Lo importante es que las familias hispanas (aquĂ) se sientan parte de este puebloâ&#x20AC;?, comentĂł Lackey. Tacos, arroz, ďŹ&#x201A;an y agua de horchata fueron parte del menĂş. La ďŹ esta presentĂł mĂşsica de Juventud Salvaje, una banda local de La Monte integrada por una familia y dos alumnos de La Monte. Estudiantes, padres y visitantes disfrutaron de una noche de diversiĂłn y tradiciones culturales. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fue una ďŹ esta grandiosa â&#x20AC;&#x201C; uno de los mejores bailes que nuestra escuela haya tenidoâ&#x20AC;?, dijo Abraham Berry, alumno de La Monte.

second Noche Latina in the school gymnasium. English as a second language teacher Melissa Lackey organized the event to include the Hispanic community in school activities. Around 60 people attended the event. The money raised by Noche Latina will go toward supporting school Spanish Club events. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The money is not important, though, which is why we only charged a small fee to get in and a small fee for food. The important thing is for the Hispanic families (here) to feel they are part of this town,â&#x20AC;? Lackey said. Tacos, rice, ďŹ&#x201A;an and horchata were part of the menu. The party featured music from Juventud Salvaje (Wild Youth), a local band from La Monte formed by family members and two La Monte students. Students, parents and visitors enjoyed the night of fun and cultural traditions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a great party â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one of the best dances our school has ever had,â&#x20AC;? On Thursday (Nov. 18), the University of Nebraska menʼs team will face Vanderbilt University in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan. The eight-team tournament will conclude Sunday (Nov. 21). On Thursday in Columbia, Mo., the University of Missouri (MU) menʼs team will host Western Illinois University in the opening round of the Cancun Challenge. On Saturday, the Tigers will host the University of North Florida in the second round. MU will finish tournament play Nov. 23-24 at the Aventura Palace Resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. MU coach Mike Anderson and Nebraska coach Doc Sadler emphasized during the recent Big 12 Conference Menʼs Basketball Media Day in Kansas City, Mo., that their respective trips south arenʼt excuses for team vacations. “Theyʼll have some fun, but itʼll be (a) business (trip) for us as well,” Anderson said. The Cornhuskers did their sightseeing during the offseason, when they visited the Bahamas, Sadler said. KU: Variety show KU coach Bonnie Henrickson hopes a mix of non-conference opponents will prepare the Jayhawks for the mix of styles theyʼll see in conference play. KUʼs non-conference opponents include the University of Michigan (Dec. 9, away); and the University of Alabama (Dec. 12, home). Michigan will help prepare the Jayhawks for the Big 12ʼs physical teams, Henrickson said. By contrast, Alabama is “very, very athletic” and moves up and down the court quickly, “which a lot of teams … in our league do,” she said. The Jayhawks opened the regular season Sunday (Nov. 14) by defeating the University of South Dakota. K-State: Staying at home

The Wildcats wonʼt have to pack many travel bags early this season. Of K-Stateʼs ﬁrst nine regular-season games, seven are at home. K-State opened the regular season Nov. 12 by defeating visiting Grambling State University in the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic. The long homestand is advantageous to the Wildcats, coach Deb Patterson explained, because they can focus on themselves, without the added pressures of traveling and visiting crowds. “Itʼs an unusual situation for us to be home that much early,” Patterson said. “But Iʼll also say this: I think we have a very challenging non-conference slate.” K-Stateʼs other non-conference opponents include Western Illinois University (Nov. 21 at home); and the University of Iowa (Dec. 2, away).
