Immigration agents and police officers reportedly started taking people to the dance floor and organizing them to check their documents.

El origen del rito de “ardid o trato” – conocido hoy en día como “dulce o travesura” – está basado en esa leyenda de espíritus. Ésta señala que un espíritu que merodea en la Tierra juega bromas a la gente que no quiere tratar con él. Las jugarretas varían desde quemar sus casas hasta maldecir a la familia de una persona. KC councilman backs ballot measure

he Kansas City, Mo., redistricting map adopted Oct. 7 by the City Council disenfranchises Hispanic voters, City Councilman John Sharp told Dos Mundos. So he’s urging residents to vote yes on Question 3.

When Kansas City Mo., voters go to the polls on Nov. 2, they’ll not only choose political candidates, but also when city council districts will be redrawn. Question 3 would amend the City Charter to change the timing of the city’s redistricting process. It asks voters whether to require redrawing council boundaries once a decade after U.S. census figures are available.

Under a City Charter revision approved by council members in 2006, boundaries must be redrawn for the city’s six council districts before every third general election cycle. That means the city is required to redistrict before the city primary and general elections in February and PÁGINA 8A>

Según Roxana Gallardo, quien estuvo en el Oasis esa noche, “todos estaban bailando, cuando se prendieron las luces y se apagó la música”.

Luego, la policía empezó a entrar y organizar a la gente adentro del club, recordó Gallardo.

“Yo pensé que ellos simplemente iban a revisar las identificaciones para ver que no había menores bebiendo”, dijo.

Testigos han señalado que los agentes de ICE entraron al club atrás de los oficiales de policía.

“Nosotros pensamos que estaban buscando a alguien en particular”, comentó un testigo anónimo.

Supuestamente los agentes de ICE y la policía comenzar a llevar gente a la pista de baile y a organizarlos par revisar sus documentos.

“Los oficiales anunciaron que la gente que tuviera identificación de Kansas y Missouri se pusiera en un lado; y luego comenzaron a revisar sus identificaciones”, informó Gallardo.

Después de revisarlas, la policía supuestamente empezó a pedirle a la gente que hiciera una fila para revisar las identificaciones internacionales. Los agentes de inmigración tomaron las huellas digitales y realizaron revisiones de antecedentes criminales a las personas que carecían de una prueba de estatus legal en EE.UU. Aquellos con registros criminales fueron arrestados; y a los que no tenían les entregaron citatorios.

Varios documentos falsos fueron confiscados, incluyendo licencias de manejar y documentos migratorios. El proceso total se llevó alrededor de cuatro horas.

“Los agentes de ICE fueron muy respetuosos. De hecho, uno de ellos me preguntó cuánto tiempo llevaba en EE.UU. y le contesté … 20 años”, indicó Gallardo, quien entró al país a los 5 años. “Él estaba muy sorprendido y me dijo que hablaba inglés realmente bien”.

A pesar del trato que recibió, ella consideró el incidente como una de las experiencias más humillantes. El martes (Oct. 26), acudió a su cita con inmigración.

“Después de que todo se había realizado, ellos me dieron una fecha para corte de inmigración”, informó.

Gallardo espera apelar su caso. Debido a su buen comportamiento y al número de años que ha estado en el país, ella espera que el juez le apruebe una residencia permanente.

“Yo me crié aquí, he vivido aquí casi toda mi vida y he sido una buena persona”, dijo. “Ahora, simplemente pongo todo en las manos de Dios”.

Muchos latinos han expresado su desaprobación con respecto a lo sucedido el domingo en el Oasis. Una persona que pidió el anonimato envió el siguiente mensaje a la página de Facebook de Dos Mundos: “ICE fue con la intención de arrestar extranjeros ilegales en este país. La policía fue allá con la excusa de encontrar a menores de edad bebiendo. Ellos sabían exactamente lo que estaban buscando. Esto es un escándalo para la comunidad hispana. Deberíamos pedir … un boicot … a los negocios en Kansas City, especialmente … a los clubs nocturnos”.

Gallardo piensa que todo estuvo planeado. De hecho, informó que le preguntó a un agente de ICE por qué estaban ahí. La respuesta que obtuvo fue que la policía había llamado a ICE. “Él también me dijo que no van a centros nocturnos a realizar redadas”, agregó.

Según el Capt. de KCPD Rich Lockhart, la ‘revisión de bar’ estuvo entre las 30 que el departamento realiza cada mes. Y añadió que el club nocturno Oasis ha sido la escena de varios incidentes criminales desde el 2009, que incluyen tiroteos, peleas y actividad pandilleril.

“Nosotros también necesitamos dejar en claro que los agentes de ICE estuvieron ahí porque llevamos a la brigada de pandillas; y los agentes de ICE son asignados a ésta. A donde acude la brigada de pandillas, también va ICE”, informó Lockhart.

Por otra parte, Lockhart reportó que hubo 4 menores arrestados por consumo de alcohol. Adicionalmente, 3 guardias de seguridad sin licencia--incluyendo a uno que portaba drogas y estaba armado--y 4 personas que tenían drogas consigo fueron arrestados.

“Nosotros respondimos a la actividad criminal y el Oasis ha tenido mucha”, concluyó Lockhart.

20 years,” said Gallardo, who entered the country at age 5. “He was very surprised and told me that I spoke really good English.”

Despite the treatment she received, Gallardo considered the incident to one of her most humiliating experiences. On Tuesday (Oct. 26), she received an immigrationrelated citation.

“After everything was done, they gave me an immigration court date,” Gallardo said.

Gallardo is hoping to appeal her case.

Because of her good behavior and the number of years she’s been in the United States, she hopes the judge approves her for permanent residency.

“I grew up here, (lived here almost) all my life and I have been a good person,” she said. “Now, I just put everything in God’s hands.”

Many Latinos have expressed their disapproval over what happened Sunday at the Oasis. A person requesting anonymity sent the following message to Dos Mundos’ Facebook page: “(The) ICE went with the intention of arresting illegal aliens in this country. The police went there with the excuse to find underage people drinking. They knew exactly what they were looking for. This is an outrage for the Hispanic community.

We should call … for a boycott … (of) the businesses in Kansas City, especially … the nightclubs.”

Gallardo thinks everything was planned. In fact, she said that she asked an ICE agent why the ICE was there. The answer she got was that the police had called the ICE. “He also told me that they don’t go to nightclubs to conduct raids,” she said.

According to KCPD Capt. Rich Lockhart, the tavern check was among the 30 tavern checks the department conducts each month. Lockhart also said the Oasis nightclub has been the scene of numerous criminal incidents since 2009, including shootings, fights and gang activity.

“We (also) need to make (it) clear that (the) ICE agents were there because we took the gang squad, and ICE agents are assigned to the gang squad. Wherever the gang squad goes, ICE goes too,” Lockhart said.

Moreover, Lockhart reported there were four minors arrested for underage drinking. In addition, three unlicensed security guards were arrested, including one who had drugs and was armed; and four people arrested for drug possession.

“We respond to criminal activity, and (the) Oasis has had a lot,” Lockhart said.

Pero este ciclo electoral ha visto candidatos aquí – y en todo el país – haciendo esto justamente. La gente que ellos están lanzando despreocupadamente como una papa caliente, metafóricamente, son los inmigrantes indocumentados. Los puntos virulentos que esos candidatos están lanzando de un lado al otro sobre el empleo de inmigrantes ilegales establece un nuevo estándar mínimo en el discurso político. El que ellos estén identificando a los individuos inmigrantes con nombre cruza un línea inviolable.

Asociar los rostros y nombres de las víctimas con el presunto abuso calculado del sistema, con violaciones éticas y el rompimiento de las leyes es insostenible y coloca a la sociedad – a todos nosotros – en juicio.

Un caso fuerte debe hacerse de inmediato para elevar la calidad del discurso político y establecer nuevos estándares altos que expresen lo mejor de nuestra naturaleza.

Como una estrategia política, explotar a los individuos no sólo es inexcusable, sino también inútil.

Y sugiere una campaña impulsada por la desesperación y un candidato moralmente en bancarrota incapaz de brindar medidas bien consideradas y razonadas para aprovechar las fortalezas de nuestra nación y abordar los males que aquejan a ésta.

El índice de desempleo nacional ha pegado angustiosamente en el 10% este año, con más estados estableciendo récords y viendo el desempleo tan alto como el 14.4%. En septiembre, el número de ejecuciones hipotecarias en EE.UU. alcanzó un máximo histórico. Para mediados de octubre, las casas incautadas por prestamistas comerciales en lo que va de este año suman más de 816,000. Los analistas proyectan que el crecerá a 1.2 millones para fin de año.

En exámenes comparativos internacionales de desempeño académico en décadas recientes, los estudiantes en EE.UU. han quedado atrás que aquellos en la mayoría de los países europeos y asiáticos. It teaches them eye-hand coordination and how to follow directions. The structured play helps youngsters develop competencies in creativity and imagination, reflex actions, listening skills and overcoming fear. It fosters self-assurance and resiliency.

Here’s how the fast-paced children’s game is played: Six or more players form a circle with a “caller” in the center. The caller closes her or his eyes while the young players rapidly toss around a small, soft object, such as a beanbag. When the caller yells out “hot,” the player holding the “hot potato” is eliminated. The game ends when only one player remains. She or he wins and becomes the caller in the next game.

Because the hot potato represents something everyone fears a little and no one wants to hold, it’s made its way into the adult vernacular of politics, diplomacy, business and culture. Until now, it’s been applied to issues, which are inanimate, because tossing around sentient beings, even metaphorically, runs counter to our culture.

But this election cycle has seen candidates here – and nationwide – do just that. The people they’re carelessly tossing around like a hot potato, metaphorically, are undocumented immigrants. The vitriolic barbs those candidates are lobbing back and forth about employing illegal immigrants set a new minimum standard in political discourse. That they’re identifying individual immigrants by name crosses an inviolate line.

Associating the faces and names of the victims with the alleged calculated abuse of the system, ethics violations and lawbreaking is indefensible and puts society – all of us – on trial. A strong case must be made immediately for elevating the quality of political discourse and setting new high standards expressing the best of our natures.

As a political strategy, exploiting individuals is not only inexcusable, but also useless. And it suggests a campaign driven by desperation and a morally bankrupt candidate incapable of reasoned, well-considered measures to build on our nation’s strengths and address our nation’s ills.

The national jobless rate has stuck distressingly close to 10 percent this year, with some states setting records and seeing unemployment as high as 14.4 percent. In September, the number of U.S. home foreclosures hit an all-time high. By mid-October, homes seized by commercial lenders so far this year numbered more than 816,000. Analysts project it will grow to 1.2 million by year’s end.

In international comparison exams of academic performance in recent decades, students in the United States have trailed those in most European and Asian countries. In 2000, U.S. students ranked 15th in reading literacy; in 2003, 24th in mathematics; and in 2006, 21st in science. School districts nationwide are shuttering schools, laying off teachers and staff members, and cutting programs.

Mature, qualified candidates serious about serving our country would be debating how to resuscitate the economy and generate jobs, not whether a political opponent knowingly or unknowingly employed an undocumented immigrant in the distant past.

a mayoría de los estados cuentan con una política obligatoria de arresto para los casos de violencia doméstica. Si se llama a la policía cuando hay un disturbio, es muy probable que una o ambas partes vayan a la cárcel.

En Kansas, la agresión doméstica se define como sigue: 1. Ocasionar daño corporal intencionalmente o imprudentemente por parte de un familiar o miembro del hogar en contra de otro; o 2. Provocar contacto físico intencional con un familiar o miembro del hogar por parte de otro miembro de la familia o del hogar cuando se hace en forma ruda, insultante o enojado.

ost states have a mandatory arrest policy for domestic violence cases. If the police are called to a disturbance, it is highly likely that one or both parties are going to jail.

In Kansas, domestic battery is defined as follows: 1. Intentionally or recklessly causing bodily harm by a family or household member against a family or household member; or 2. Intentionally causing physical contact with a family or household member by a family or household member when done in a rude, insulting or angry manner. (K.S.A. 21-3412[a]) The domestic violence statutes in Missouri are similar to those in Kansas. The key element necessary for a person’s arrest and possible conviction is an unwanted physical touching.

This touching can be something as simple as a slap in the face or a rude push. Often, the mere allegation of physical violence or contact is enough to send someone to jail.

In addition, there may be a no-contact order issued by the judge after the charge has been filed. The no-contact order prohibits the victim and defendant from interacting or communicating with each other on any level. This may cause deep strain between the parties because often they will have children in common.

People charged with domestic violence should never attempt to contact the victim, as this may cause additional criminal charges to be filed against them. Moreover, an allegation of domestic violence may make one subject to a civil Protection From Abuse (PFA) or Protection From Stalking order (PFS). Although PFAs and PFSs are civil cases, a violation of the order can lead to criminal charges that carry jail time.

Convictions of domestic violence crimes can affect one’s ability to seek permanent residency in the country, subject them to deportation, prevent or maintain employment, own or possess firearms, and may jeopardize their eligibility for student loans.

Because of the complexity and severity of domestic violence charges, anyone facing prosecution should contact an experienced domestic violence attorney. Many cases of domestic violence can be resolved by setting the matter for trial and forcing the prosecution to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. A diversion agreement, anger management classes, counseling and probation may also be appropriate options to consider.

el 23 de Sept. al 14 de Oct., nueve maestras hondureñas visitaron el área de Kansas City para aprender nuevas técnicas de enseñanza para mejorar la educación en honduras.

Entre las instructoras estaban: Patricia Díaz, Tania Valladares, Norma Mejía, Vivian Rodríguez, Besy Pacheco, Besy Murillo, Wendy Corrales, Hilda Camato y Glenda Mendoza. La visita fue posible a través de Amigos Unidos, un programa establecido en Independence, Mo. que ayuda a mejorar la educación en naciones en desarrollo.

Las profesoras estuvieron en diferentes escuelas en los distritos escolares de Fort Osage, Kansas City, Mo. e Independence, donde aprendieron nueva técnicas de enseñanza y participaron en talleres sobre temas como la lectura, redacción y materiales de enseñanza.

In addition, they were invited to participate in different recreational activities, such as visits to the Kansas City (Mo.) Zoo and Powell Gardens.

“We came to improve learning techniques for our children. We have learned a lot and we are really happy,” said Murillo, a teacher from the Zita Salgado School.

All the teachers expressed their happiness with attending the different workshops.

“We are very happy because (of) all the things we have learned. We are looking forward to applying the knowledge that we (have) learned,” said Rodriguez.

According to Pacheco, Friends United Program director in Honduras, all the teachers go through a selection process to come to the United States.

“We see who the best teachers are in the schools and we bring them,” Pacheco said. “The decision is made based on feedback and supervision.”

The Friends United Program has different centers across Honduras. The centers are equipped with different electronic devices. Each center has a value of $12,000. Founded in 1987, the program is a cooperative effort of Independence and Honduran educators.

As a message for the Honduran community in the area, Norma Mejia, coordinator of the Tegucigalpa office, said: “I want to tell all the Honduran people to don’t forget their country. They should try to keep their work up. In addition, I want to tell them to support the Friends United Program because they will be supporting (the) Honduran education system.”

Open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Sunday, the 50-acre patch is located at 17607 N.E. 52nd St. in Liberty, Mo. It offers pumpkins in various sizes, shapes and colors. People can go into the patch and pick their pumpkins or they can select from the ones that are already picked.

He supports public education and recognizes the importance of student loan programs for higher education.

On immigration Turk is pushing to strengthen the nation’s borders and ports, completing the 700-mile barrier on the U.S.-Mexican border and using National Guard troops to reinforce the Border Patrol. Once the borders are secured, legislative immigration reform and enforcement can move forward.

3. LED lights or glow sticks are a safer alternative to lit candles. Some lights even flicker to offer the appeal of candles.

4. Trick-or-treat in a group and never alone.

6. Be sure costumes are not tripping hazards.

7. Costumes on young children should be age-appropriate and free of hazards, such as strings that can strangle or small parts that can choke.

8. Stick to trick-or-treating in trusted neighborhoods.

9. Be extra-cautious of cars when walking at night.

l 13 de Oct., la Facultad de Medicina de n Oct. 13, the University of Kansas la Universidad de Kansas, las Clínicas E O School of Medicine, Children’s Mercy y Hospitales Children’s Mercy y el Consulado Hospitals and Clinics, and the Mexican ConMexicano realizaron el seminario “Más Allá de las Fronteras” para informar a la gente sobre los diversos asuntos e iniciativas de atención médica de los inmigrantes en Estados Unidos.

El evento se llevó a cabo en el auditorio del Centro Médico KU en Kansas City, Kan. El seminario incluyó “Implicaciones de la Reforma de Salud de EE.UU. en los Latinos”, un programa presentado por Elena Ríos, miembro de la Asociación Médica Nacional Hispana. Ella enfatizó la importancia de las nuevas iniciativas de la reforma federal de salud para los latinos, especialmente para aquellos que están legalmente en el país.

Aarón Terrazas, representante del Instituto de Política Migratorio, indicó que hay algunos asuntos con respecto a las nuevas reformas que afectarán a los latinos.

Ávila también habló sobre algunos factores relacionados con la salud que afectan a la comunidad migrante y que incluyen cambios en el estilo de vida y el medio ambiente.

Además, recalcó la importancia de tomar acciones preventivas para mejorar la salud de los inmigrantes.

“Nosotros debemos … promover las clínicas comunitarias, el programa de la Ventanilla de Salud y el programa de Seguro Popular”, dijo.

El seminario también cubrió diferentes temas relacionados con la Semana Binacional de Salud.

Rios emphasized the importance of the new federal healthcare reform initiatives for Latinos, especially for those who are lawfully in the United States.

Aaron Terrazas, a representative of the Migration Policy Institute, indicated there are some issues regarding the new reforms that will affect Latinos.

“The healthcare reform has some (points of) exclusion, such as no benefits or plans to unauthorized immigrants, and no benefits and subsides for recent legal immigrants,” he said.

Terrazas also pointed out the growth of the Latino population in Arkansas, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri.

Adrian Davila, Economic Analysis Unit director with the Mexican Ministry of Health, indicated the Mexican government is trying to improve the healthcare status of Mexicans in the United States. Avila also discussed some of the health-related factors that affect the migrant community, including lifestyle changes and environment.

Moreover, Avila stressed the importance of taking preventive actions to improve immigrants’ health.

“We must … (promote) community clinics, the Ventanilla de Salud program and the Seguro Popular program,” Avila said.

The seminar also covered different topics relating to Binational Health Week.

The holiday has its origins in ancient Mexican cultures. According to Mexican history, several Indian communities – including the Mayan, Mexica, Purepecha and Totonaca – honored their dead with various rituals.

Mictecaihuatl (“Lady of Death�) and Mictlatecuhtli (“Lord of the Land of Dead�) directed the rituals, which involved presenting various artifacts and skull pieces. The rituals were created to honor those who had passed away. Over time, various societies incorporated new elements into this celebration.

The well-known Altar of the Dead is the cornerstone to the celebration. The altar must include photos of the dead, artifacts, food they liked, cempasuchil owers, bread – and for children, their favorite toy. The altar is usually erected before Nov. 1 to give the dead a warm welcome.

Another important element of the celebration is “La Catrina� (“Death�), a Mexican character that dates back to the Mexican Revolution. Created in a cartoon by Jose Guadalupe Posadas to depict Mexico’s upper class in 1910, La Catrina symbolizes identity and tradition and is used to honor the dead. “For me, Day of the Dead is more than a tradition because it involves feelings. Every year, we place an altar in my house and I feel really proud and excited,� said Susana Gonzalez, a Kansas City, Mo., resident.

On Nov. 5, Dos Mundos will host a Day of the Dead celebration, “Antes Muerta Que Sencilla� at its facility on 902 Southwest Blvd. in Kansas City, Mo. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Sharp, who dissented along with Councilman Russ Johnson, called it a textbook example of political gerrymandering. “It sliced and diced the Northeast part of Kansas City south of the Missouri River so badly it looks like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle,� Sharp said.

He also said the redrawn council district map violates the principle of equal representation and dilutes Hispanics’ voting power. “It really treats the Hispanic community very unfairly,� Sharp said. “Hispanic neighborhoods were divided among the 1st, 3rd and 4th districts,� he said.

The reapportionment based on “guesstimates� also rankled other constituencies.

Some voters in Sharp’s 6th District argued the new boundaries, which carved Waldo up between the 4th and 6th districts, politically weighted the district’s western sector.

Sharp pushed unsuccessfully for a compromise map.

On Sept. 2, City Council members voted 8-4 to override Mayor Mark Funkhouser’s veto of an ordinance (100650) seeking voter approval in the November election of the proposed charter change. “If it (Question 3) passes, we won’t have to go through this costly, contentious redistricting process based on guesstimates again,� Sharp said. “I feel it’s important for Hispanic voters to know how urgent it is in order to ensure that their votes are given equal weight.�

Hispanic community at a crossroads La comunidad hispana en la encrucijada

ara los hispanos en Estados Unidos, ĂŠste es un momento sumamente complejo.

Somos muchos -- mĂĄs de 48 millones segĂşn la OďŹ cina del Censo de Estados Unidos. Pero, si somos tantos, Âżpor quĂŠ no tenemos mĂĄs poder polĂ­tico? SĂłlo tenemos un senador en el Congreso, el demĂłcrata Robert MenĂŠndez, de Nueva Jersey, asĂ­ que carecemos de la inuencia que merecemos en Washington. Y, pese a nuestros esfuerzos, no hemos logrado una de nuestras metas comunes mĂĄs importantes: establecer una ruta hacia la legalizaciĂłn de los inmigrantes indocumentados.

Es verdad que ambos partidos polĂ­ticos nos han decepcionado. Muchos hispanos se sienten frustrados por el presidente Obama, quien no cumpliĂł su promesa de impulsar una reforma migratoria durante su primer aĂąo en la Casa Blanca. Y tambiĂŠn estĂĄn enojados con el Partido DemĂłcrata en general por no tener el valor polĂ­tico para votar por una reforma amplia migratoria, sea en el Senado o la CĂĄmara de Representantes.

Los hispanos estĂĄn igualmente irritados con los legisladores republicanos, quienes este aĂąo apoyaron las leyes anti-inmigrantes en Arizona, votaron contra la iniciativa de Ley de Desarrollo, Ayuda y EducaciĂłn para Menores Extranjeros -- que pudo haber ayudado a unos 800,000 estudiantes indocumentados a obtener la ciudadanĂ­a -- y presionaron para que se privara de la ciudadanĂ­a estadounidense a los hijos de inmigrantes indocumentados. Pero, aunque unos 10 millones de hispĂĄnicos votaron en 2008, es casi seguro que ese nĂşmero serĂĄ menor este aĂąo: enfrentados al dilema de votar por uno u otro partido en las elecciones intermedias del 2 de noviembre, demasiados de ellos decidirĂĄn quedarse en casa. SĂłlo 51 por ciento de los votantes hispanos dijeron que votarĂĄn en estas elecciones, segĂşn una encuesta del Pew Hispanic Center. En contraste, 70 por ciento de todos los votantes registrados en Estados Unidos dijeron que sĂ­ van a votar.

Insisto, una vez mĂĄs, en que la desilusiĂłn de los hispanos con los demĂłcratas y su rechazo a los republicanos es comprensible, pero no votar en noviembre serĂ­a un terrible error. ReducirĂ­a nuestro poder como grupo, lo que llevarĂ­a a menos victorias de candidatos hispanos y, en consecuencia, menos polĂ­ticos que deďŹ endan nuestros intereses.

AdemĂĄs de la falta de inuencia polĂ­tica, otro problema que enfrentamos es deďŹ nir exactamente lo que deseamos. Las encuestas muestran que nuestras prioridades son: tener un trabajo decente, buenas escuelas para nuestros hijos y seguro mĂŠdico. Pero la meta mĂĄs importante para los hispanos ha sido la reforma de las leyes migratorias para otorgar ďŹ nalmente la ciudadanĂ­a a los 11 millones de personas indocumentadas que hoy viven en Estados Unidos.

Desafortunadamente, nuestros esfuerzos han logrado exactamente nada, y durante el decenio pasado, todos los intentos relacionados con este tema han fracasado.

El presidente George W. Bush estaba trabajando para lograr la reforma de las leyes de inmigraciĂłn en agosto de 2001, pero, despuĂŠs de los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre de 2001, las prioridades cambiaron. Cuando el esfuerzo en favor de la legislaciĂłn migratoria se reviviĂł en 2007, sus partidarios en el Senado no pudieron conseguir siquiera los 60 votos necesarios para debatir la propuesta. En septiembre de este aĂąo, una vez mĂĄs, tampoco se obtuvo en el Senado el apoyo mĂ­nimo para debatir legislaciĂłn relacionada, en esta ocasiĂłn, con el DREAM Act. Las encuestas polĂ­ticas muestran que los republicanos probablemente ganarĂĄn varios escaĂąos en la CĂĄmara de Representantes y el Senado en las elecciones intermedias del mes entrante -- y esto podrĂ­a signiďŹ car que la reforma inmigratoria total, o cualquier intento de aprobar leyes que beneďŹ cien a los inmigrantes indocumentados, podrĂ­an enfrentar un bloqueo, cuando menos por ahora.

Dado que ĂŠste el caso, ÂżquĂŠ debemos hacer? ÂżQuĂŠ es lo que queremos?

Sabemos que menos inmigrantes indocumentados estĂĄn cruzando hacia Estados Unidos en estos dĂ­as, pero los que ya estĂĄn aquĂ­ no se van. Y sabemos que es imposible deportar a 11 millones de personas, y sin duda no habrĂĄ un ĂŠxodo masivo de inmigrantes que retornen a sus paĂ­ses de origen.

AsĂ­ que debemos ser prĂĄcticos y aceptar que no habrĂĄ reforma sin el apoyo republicano. Es necesario encontrar un terreno comĂşn con el GOP y reďŹ nar nuestro enfoque para crear un plan viable. Dado que la prioridad es legalizar a los que ya estĂĄn aquĂ­ -- para proteger sus derechos y para que vivan libres de miedo y persecuciĂłn -- quizĂĄ lo indicado sea un plan congresional en dos partes. En la primera etapa presionarĂ­amos para una votaciĂłn que ofreciera un estatus estable y legal para los inmigrantes, y durante la segunda etapa, aĂąos despuĂŠs, buscarĂ­amos la ciudadanĂ­a estadounidense para aquellos que cumplan todos los requisitos. No es la mejor soluciĂłn posible, pero algo como esto podrĂ­a ser polĂ­ticamente aceptable en el futuro cercano.

Sospecho que si preguntĂĄramos a los inmigrantes indocumentados en Estados Unidos si aceptarĂ­an una legalizaciĂłn sin ciudadanĂ­a como primer paso, la mayorĂ­a dirĂ­a que sĂ­. Entiendo perfectamente que no queremos en Estados Unidos a ciudadanos de segunda clase. Pero si ahora no podemos conseguir la “enchilada completaâ€? -- como solĂ­a decir el ex secretario de Relaciones Exteriores de MĂŠxico, Jorge CastaĂąeda -- entonces hagamos esto en etapas. Poco a poco.

Hoy, la comunidad hispana se encuentra en una encrucijada mayĂşscula. Pero la forma en que enfrentemos nuestra falta de poder polĂ­tico y la dura situaciĂłn de millones de inmigrantes indocumentados determinarĂĄ nuestro futuro -- y, en Ăşltima instancia, el de Estados Unidos.

or U.S. Hispanics, this is a complex moment.

We are many – more than 48 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But if we are so many, why don’t we have more political power?

There’s only one Hispanic senator in Congress, Democrat Robert Menendez of New Jersey, so we lack the inuence we deserve in Washington. And despite our efforts, we have yet to achieve one of our most important common goals: establishing a path to legalization for undocumented immigrants.

It’s true both political parties have disappointed us. Many Hispanics feel frustrated with President Obama, who failed to keep his promise to push through immigration reform during his ďŹ rst year in the White House. They’re also angry with the Democratic Party for not mustering enough political courage to advance comprehensive reform in the Senate or the House of Representatives.

Hispanics are equally dismayed with Republican lawmakers, who this year overwhelmingly supported anti-immigrant laws in Arizona, voted against the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act – which could’ve helped about 800,000 undocumented students gain citizenship – and pushed to withhold American citizenship from children of undocumented immigrants. But while about 10 million Hispanics voted in 2008, it’s almost certain that number will be smaller this year – faced with voting for one party or another in the Nov. 2 midterm elections, too many will probably stay home.

Only 51 percent of eligible Hispanic voters say they’ll cast a ballot in the elections, according to a Pew Hispanic Center survey. Comparatively, 70 percent of all registered voters in the United States say they’ll vote.

Again, I understand that Hispanics are disillusioned with Democrats and Republicans, but not casting a ballot in November would be a dreadful mistake. This would just reduce our power as a group – leading to fewer victories for Hispanic candidates, and thus, fewer politicians who will defend our interests.

In addition to a lack of political inuence, another problem we face is deďŹ ning what we want. Surveys show our priorities as a group are decent jobs, good schools and medical insurance. Nevertheless, the most important goal for Hispanics has been reforming immigration laws to ďŹ nally provide citizenship to 11 million undocumented people living in the United States. Unfortunately, our efforts have yielded nothing – and during the last decade, every attempt related to this issue has failed.

President George W. Bush was working toward reforming immigration laws in August 2001, but after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, priorities changed. When a push for immigration legislation was revived in 2007, supporters in the Senate couldn’t collect the 60 votes necessary to debate a proposal. In September of this year, again, not even the minimum votes could be gathered in the Senate to further discuss legislation, this time the DREAM Act. Political polls show Republicans are likely to win several seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections – and this could mean comprehensive immigration reform, or any attempt at passing legislation that would beneďŹ t undocumented immigrants, could face a roadblock for the time being.

That being the case, what should we do?

What do we want?

We know fewer undocumented immigrants are crossing into the United States, but those already here aren’t leaving. We know it’s impossible to deport 11 million people, and there won’t be a massive exodus of immigrants back to their respective home countries.

So we must be practical and realize there’ll be no reform without Republican support. It’s necessary to ďŹ nd common ground with the GOP and reďŹ ne our focus to create a politically viable plan. Because the priority is to legalize those immigrants who are already here – to protect their rights and allow them to live free from fear and persecution –perhaps a two-part congressional plan is in order. In the ďŹ rst part, we would press for a vote that offers a stable, legal status for immigrant. During the second, years later, we would pursue U.S. citizenship to those who qualify.

It’s not the best solution, but something like this could be politically acceptable in the near future.

I suspect if we asked undocumented immigrants in the United States if they would accept legalization without citizenship as a ďŹ rst step, most would say, “Yes.â€? I understand we don’t want a group of second-class citizens in the United States, but if we can’t get “the whole enchiladaâ€? at once – as former Mexican foreign relations secretary Jorge Castaneda (CastaĂąeda in Spanish) used to say – then let’s do this in stages. Slowly.

The Hispanic community ďŹ nds itself at a major crossroads. But the way we deal with our lack of political power and the plight of millions of undocumented immigrants will determine our future – and, ultimately, that of the United States.

Exhibición del Día de los Muertos Fotos por Gabriel Martínez

a galería de arte Mattie Rhodes, abrió su exhibición del Día de los Muertos con una L recepción que se realizó el 1 de Oct. Al evento, organizado para celebrar la colorida festividad mexicana, asistieron líderes e integrantes de la comunidad.

Además, el 2 de Oct. se realizó un festival donde participaron diversos grupos que incluyeron a Grupo Aztlan, Axe Caporeira, Somos Latinos, Hip Hop Academy, Grupo Atotonilco y Makuza.

La exhibición permanecerá abierta hasta el 12 de Nov. y presenta varios altares hechos por artistas y familias locales, así como obras de arte inspiradas en el Día de Muertos.

El viernes, 5 de Nov. de 6 a 9 p.m., se realizará una segunda recepción abierta al público que contará con la presencia de la cuentista cultural Olga Loya, de San José; el poeta chicano Tomás Riley de San Francisco, música del Mariachi Artesano y un desfile a lo largo del vecindario Westside.

El sábado, 13 de Nov. de 10 a.m. al medio día, se realizará un taller donde enseñarán a fabricar calacas de azúcar, collares de cuentas y más. El taller está abierto para gente de todas las edades y cuesta $30.

Veterans Day Breakfast

Desayuno del Día de los Veteranos Un evento para destacar a veteranos minoritarios

miércoles, 10 de Nov., el 50 de Parques ElPrograma y Recreaciones del Distrito

del Condado Johnson está realizando su 4to. desayuno anual del Día de los Veteranos.

El Centro Comunitario Matt Ross en Overland Park está albergando el evento a lo largo de toda la mañana para honrar a los veteranos de las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos.

La entrada al desayuno es gratuita para los veteranos y cuesta $5 para los demás. Los organizadores animan a la gente a que se registre anticipadamente para evitar que sean rechazados. Solamente hay 250 asientos disponibles. La fecha límite para registrarse para el desayuno es el 3 de Nov. Llame de lunes a viernes de 8 a.m. a 4:30 p.m. al (913) 642-6410 para registrarse.

Ambas partes del programa están abiertas al público en general; y las personas pueden asistir a cualquiera de ellas o a ambas. Catholic Group to host congress

Grupo católico realizará un congreso An event to spotlight minority vets

he Johnson County T Park and Recreation District’s 50 Plus Program

is holding its 4th annual Veterans Day breakfast on Wednesday, Nov. 10. The Matt Ross Community Center in Overland Park is hosting the morning-long event to honor veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

Admission to the breakfast is free to veterans and $5 for others. Organizers urge early registration to avoid getting turned away. Only 250 seats are available. The deadline to register for the breakfast is Nov. 3. Call (913) 642-6410 Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.4:30 p.m. to sign up.

A local color guard will open the program at 8:30 a.m.

Following breakfast by Chris Cakes served cafeteria style, the Overland Stage Chorus will perform a cappella about a dozen patriotic numbers and barbershop harmony. Nearly all of the 28 singers are veterans themselves.

In fact, said the group’s president, Matthew Soule, “Most served in World War II in pretty much the gamut of American military branches.”

In the second half of the two-part Veterans Day observance, the Johnson County Library will present an hourlong program. Minorities who served during WWII are the special focus this year. Former Pfc. Roque “Rocky” Riojas and former Pfc. Oliver Vincent Shields will discuss their respective roles in operations to defeat Germany.

Riojas, a Kansas City, Kan., native earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart serving in North Africa and Italy with the 34th Infantry Division, known as the Red Bull Division.

It was the first U.S. division to land in Europe and logged the most days in combat -- over 600.

Shields of Kansas City, Mo. was with the Army Quartermaster Corps at Omaha Beach in the D-Day invasion and later the 14th Armored Division. His first assignment at the beachhead in June 1944 was processing soldiers who were killed. A Q&A will follow their presentations.

Each year, the second part of the commemorative event focuses on a different theme. Last year, Peter A. Hansen, editor of Railroad History Magazine presented “The Story of Trackside Canteens During World War II.” Volunteers in WWII-period attire “took you back to what it was like in those canteens where they provided food for the soldiers,” said Lynn C. Wild, Johnson County Library senior services librarian.

The Veterans Day observance is a collaborative effort by four organizations – the Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s 50 Plus Program, Johnson County Library, the city of Overland Park and Mission Square Senior Living.

Both parts of the program are open to the general public, and people can attend either or both parts. Last year, 186 people attended the breakfast, and a total of 224 people heard Hansen’s presentation, said JCPRD recreation coordinator Marilyn Lyons. Obituary Denise Douglas

E

ducational professional and community activist Denise Douglas, 56, died recently. The date of her death and her funeral information were unavailable.

Douglas joined Metropolitan Community College (MCC) in 1986 as a marketing specialist at Pioneer Community College (now the Pioneer campus of MCC-Penn Valley). She worked as the public information specialist at Penn Valley for three years before moving on to work at MCCʼs administrative center as a communications coordinator.

She then moved into a position in resource development, where she wrote federal grants that resulted in $1 million for the Public Safety Training Institute at MCC-Blue River. In 2006, she became manager of community relations and communication for the five-campus district.

rom 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 30), the Road Catholic Group will host the VIII Catholic Charismatic Congress at the Battle Hall Convention Center, 301 W. 13th St., Kansas City, Mo. The event is addressed to the Catholic community of Missouri and Kansas and will cover various Catholic teachings.

“We want Catholics to attend and feel God’s presence,” said Jose Palacios, Road Catholic Group president.

As part of the event, two speakers will host various seminars and expositions.

The first exposition will be hosted by Neil Velez, who’ll discuss his struggles with cancer and how he found recovery in God after being declared terminally ill. Velez found Jesus’ ministry and radio and TV ministers preaching God’s word.

In addition, Velez will discuss faith and conversion and host a prayer for the ill.

David Bisono will be the other host.

Recognized for his work with young people, Bisono is the founder of a youth group in New York. Bisono will give a speech for young people, based on his life experiences.

“This congress is very important because we try to revive the Catholic fervor,” Palacios said. “These events nourish the spirit.”

According to Palacios, the event will help people strengthen their faith. In addition, people will have networking opportunities.

“This event is a like a huge flame that lights the small ones. It is like a fountain of water where you can drink all what you want,” Palacios explained.

Douglas also served on the board of the Womenʼs Intersport Network of Kansas City and on the Federal Funding Task Force for the Council for Resource Development in Washington, D.C. She also was involved with the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations and the Black Agenda Group. In addition, she was a trainer and public relations advisor for the First Step Fund.

As a commitment from her participation in the MCC Leadership Academy, Douglas and a colleague created the Whatʼs Your Connection? campaign to recognize MCC employees who volunteer in the community. Sometimes referred to as “the voice of MCC,” Douglasʼ vocal talent is featured in many MCC videos and commercial productions.

Douglas earned her masterʼs degree in communications studies with radio and TV writing and a performance emphasis. She also studied photography at the New England School of Photography in Boston.

A lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Missouri Tigers, Douglas also was an avid walker, biker and had practiced tai chi for 18 years.

n inconsolable woman called my radio show recently. After seven years of marriage and two children, she got the shock of her life. Her husband had cheated on her with the last person she would’ve suspected: a man!

The most hurtful part wasn’t discovering her husband had gotten involved with another man, but hearing he was going to live with his lover.

Hadn’t she thought he might be bisexual?

She said, “I had a feeling a few times, but I just didn’t want to think about it.”

Her story is more common than you’d think.

Women who’ve been married to men who were “in the closet” admit there were signs and noticed odd behavior before they were married. Their partners always found excuses to avoid having sex, such as the following: “I don’t believe in premarital sex, I respect you”; “We shouldn’t make love while you’re pregnant, I don’t want to hurt the baby”; or “I’ve been working so hard, I’m too tired tonight.” And men living double lives often have a “close friend” they spend a lot of time with, even including him in family functions.

For a wife, it’s more devastating if her husband betrays her with a man than another woman.

She feels emotionally and physically powerless, because no matter how hard she tries to salvage the relationship, she knows there’s no point in trying to compete against a man.

In this situation, the man is generally cast as the villian and the woman as the victim, but I think they’re both victims. We need to understand these men have suffered almost their whole lives in struggling to repress their sexual preference to be accepted by our society. Many have tried to hide their secret by any possible means, eventually falling into a deep depression, some even driven to suicide.

If you feel your man might be “in the closet,” then you need to have an open, honest conversation with him, without judgment, and encourage him to express his feelings. And to all the women who’ve found themselves in that situation, don’t take it personally. It’s not your fault, it’s not that you weren’t loving enough or are lacking in any way. Don’t be bitter or resentful of men. When you feel sad, lean on your friends and family for support.

Focus your thoughts on forgiveness, compassion and love. And remember, it’s never too late to start a new life!

Después de siete años de matrimonio y 2 hijos, se llevó la sorpresa más grande de este mundo.

Descubrió que su esposo le era infiel con quien ella menos lo hubiera imaginado: ¡un hombre!

Lo más doloroso no fue darse cuenta que su marido se había metido con otro hombre, sino enterarse que él se iba a vivir con su novio.

Le pregunté: ¿Acaso nunca sospechaste que tu marido fuera bisexual? A lo que respondió: “en ocasiones tuve un presentimiento, pero no quise prestarle atención”.

El caso de esta muchacha es más común de lo que muchos se imaginan. Aquellas que han estado envueltas con maridos “en el clóset” confiesan que vieron señales de alerta e identificaron comportamientos poco usuales desde antes del matrimonio, pero los ignoraron. Todas coinciden en que su pareja siempre tenía “buenas excusas” para no tener sexo, como por ejemplo: “no creo en relaciones pre-maritales, quiero respetarte”, “no debemos tener intimidad durante tu embarazo, siento que lastimo al bebé”, “tengo mucho trabajo y estoy agotado”.

Otra característica muy común entre estos hombres de doble vida es que tienen un “íntimo amigo” con quien comparten regularmente y lo incluyen hasta en los eventos familiares.

Para una esposa es mucho más devastador cuando el marido la traiciona con un hombre que con otra. La mujer se siente impotente emocional y físicamente porque no importa cuán duro trate de salvar la relación, ella sabe que es inútil competir contra un hombre.

En este escenario generalmente se juzga al hombre como el vil y la mujer como la víctima. Sin embargo, aunque muchos me critiquen, opino que ambos son víctimas. Hay que entender que estos hombres han sufrido casi toda una vida, ocultando su preferencia sexual para poder ser aceptados en la sociedad. Muchos de ellos han tratado por todos los medios de esconder su secreto hasta el punto de caer en una profunda depresión y algunos, hasta en suicido.

Si tienes dudas en tu corazón de que tu hombre pueda estar “en el clóset”, te aconsejo tener una conversación sincera y sin reproches que lo anime a expresar sus sentimientos. Y a las desconsoladas que están viviendo esta situación les digo: no lo tomes personal, no es tu culpa, a ti no te faltó dar amor ni carecías de atributos. Chiefs apply lesson from Houston loss in rout of Jacksonville

Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry felt that the Chiefs learned a lesson from their 35-31 loss Oct. 17 to the Houston Texans in Houston: Donʼt let a controversial call change a gameʼs momentum.

On Sunday (Oct. 24) at Arrowhead Stadium, they used that knowledge to steamroll the Jacksonville Jaguars during the second half.

With Kansas City leading 21-13, Berry got called for a 37-yard pass interference penalty. The penalty set up Todd Boumanʼs 9-yard touchdown pass to Mike Sims-Walker and Josh Scobeeʼs extra-point kick, cutting Kansas Cityʼs lead to 21-20 with 10 minutes, 36 seconds left in the third quarter. Kansas City answered by exploding for 21 unanswered points to thump Jacksonville 42-20 and improve to 4-2 entering their meeting with Buffalo Sunday (Oct. 31) at Arrowhead.

According to Berry, the Chiefsʼ response to the controversial call – which drew repeated boos from the fans at Arrowhead – differed from their response to a controversial call in late in the fourth quarter against Houston.

The way it “snowballed” was that Houston declined the penalty and took the result of the reception, leading to Schaubʼs 11-yard, game-winning TD pass to Johnson with 28 seconds left, followed by Kansas Cityʼs failed attempt at a comeback win.

Against Jacksonville, Kansas City created its own snowball effect after the pass interference call and ensuing touchdown. First, Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson scored on a 15-yard interception return and Ryan Succop booted the point after with 5:13 left in the third quarter. Next, the Chiefs launched a 10-play, 85-yard scoring drive, capped by Matt Casselʼs 6-yard TD pass to Dwayne Bowe and Succopʼs point after with 3:46 left in the fourth quarter.

Finally, Berry returned an interception 35 yards to the Jacksonville 12 to set up Jackie Battleʼs 1-yard scoring run and Succopʼs extra point with 1:56 left.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley suggested the teamʼs ability to rebound against Jacksonville resulted from its halftime session.

“We brought it in really tight and decided that we were going to play together, (play) complementary football in that second half and … just make sure we were the reason we won that game,” he said. “And thatʼs what the guys did.”

Y su rival será nada menos que San Francisco, que dejó en el camino a los Fillis de Filadelfia en la Liga Nacional.

El miércoles se inició de esta manera un clásico de otoño inédito y los Gigantes buscan su primer título de Serie Mundial desde 1954, cuando aún residían en Nueva York. En tanto los Rangers aspiran a su primer campeonato en la historia.

Still, the Jayhawks continue to believe theyʼre improving.

The Jayhawks have lost each of their last three games by 35 or more points. On Oct. 2, they lost 55-7 to Baylor University in Waco, Texas. On Oct. 14, visiting Kansas State University thumped them 59-7. Drubbing No. 3 came from visiting Texas A & M University Oct. 23 at Kivisto Field at Memorial Stadium. Texas A & M led 14-3 after one quarter and 31-10 at halftime and went on to hand KU a 45-10 Big 12 Conference defeat.

But after the Texas A & M loss, KU coach Turner Gill, tight end Tim Biere and defensive player Toben Opurum told reporters the team is improving. Defensively, the Jayhawks (2-5 overall, 0-3 league) are consistently giving a good effort, according to Opurum.

“Weʼve just got to … make plays when our opportunities show up,” Opurum said. “We canʼt have missed tackles the way weʼre having them – and weʼre letting them (have) too many big plays.”

Biere, who caught four passes for 67 yards against Texas A & M, said “the offense moved the ball well” against the Aggies (4-3, 1-2).

“I think it can go up from here,” Biere said.

However, Gill admitted itʼs difficult as a coach to convince young players that theyʼre improving when theyʼve been outscored 159-24 over three games, as KU has.

“It takes its toll,” Gill said. “Weʼre all human beings. It definitely hurts.”

On the other hand, players who are between 18 and 22 years old – as is the case at KU – “are all resilient,” according to Gill.

He suggested the coaching staff is resilient, too.

“Weʼve all been around the biz for a while – and we just (need to) keep on coaching, keep teaching, keep developing (players),” he said.

The Jayhawks will get to test their resiliency Saturday (Oct. 30), when they face Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
